Man, what a day! I’m tellin’ ya, being a Watchman in Urk is no joke. I woke up this mornin’ thinkin’ it’d be just another chill day, ya know? But nah, the universe had other plans. First off, I hit the streets of Urk, right? The sun was barely up, and I was already feelin’ the vibe. The smell of fresh fish from the harbor hit me like a wave. Urk’s got that whole fishing town thing goin’ on, and lemme tell ya, it’s a trip. I mean, who doesn’t love the smell of fish at 7 AM? Not me, that’s for sure. So, I’m cruisin’ down the Havenweg, just mindin’ my own business, when I see this dude, right? He’s tryin’ to catch a seagull. Like, seriously? Who does that? I’m standin’ there, laughin’ my ass off, thinkin’ this guy’s gotta be on some next-level stuff. But then, outta nowhere, the seagull swoops down and snatches his sandwich! I mean, karma, right? After that, I head over to the Kerkstraat. It’s a nice little street, full of shops and stuff. I pop into this bakery, and oh man, the smell of fresh broodjes is heavenly. I grab a couple, and the lady behind the counter is all smiles. She’s like, “You’re gonna need energy for your watch!” I’m like, “You have no idea!” But then, I step outside, and it’s like the universe flipped a switch. I see this old lady, Mrs. Jansen, who’s always grumpy. She’s yellin’ at some kids for playin’ too close to the water. I get it, but c’mon, they’re just havin’ fun! I mean, it’s Urk! The water’s practically our backyard! So, I try to calm her down. I’m like, “Hey, Mrs. Jansen, they’re just kids!” But she’s not havin’ it. She starts goin’ off about how “back in my day” we respected the water. I’m thinkin’, lady, it’s 2023! Chill out! Then, I get a call on my radio. There’s a commotion down by the dike. I rush over, and what do I find? A bunch of tourists takin’ selfies with a giant fish statue. I mean, it’s a cool statue, but c’mon, people! It’s not that deep! I can’t help but roll my eyes. But then, I see this little kid, maybe 6 or 7, and he’s just starin’ at the statue with wide eyes. He’s got this look of pure joy, and it hits me. Sometimes, it’s the little things, ya know? I snap a quick pic of him, ‘cause that’s a moment worth rememberin’. Later, I’m walkin’ along the Vissersdijk, and I spot a couple of fishermen. They’re tellin’ stories, laughin’, and I can’t help but smile. That’s what Urk’s all about, man. Community. Family. Fishin’. But then, outta nowhere, I hear this loud crash. I turn around, and some guy just knocked over a whole crate of fish! I’m like, “Dude, what are you doin’?” He’s tryin’ to pick ‘em up, but it’s a slippery mess. I can’t help but laugh again. As the day winds down, I’m sittin’ on a bench by the harbor, watchin’ the sunset. The sky’s all orange and pink, and it’s beautiful. I think about how crazy today was. From seagulls to grumpy old ladies to fish disasters, it’s all part of the gig. Urk, man. It’s wild, it’s quirky, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Just another day in the life of a Watchman. Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
