The ski industry can be fickle, but a few companies have been able to persist and prosper, one of which is Kästle
which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year
This makes Kästle one of the oldest ski manufacturers still in existence—only two are older: Rossignol (117 years) and Völkl (110 years)
Other perennial powerhouse brands are all younger: Stöckli (89 years)
Solomon (77 years; it started making steel edges for skis
presents the “100 Years of Kästle Ski” exhibition currently on display until Easter 2025
Kästle suspended ski production due to a shortage of raw materials and then again from 1945-1947 due to post-war prohibitions
This sparked a successful decade for Kästle
which saw its sponsored athletes win three gold medals at the 1952 Olympics in Oslo
and another 20 medals four years later in Cortina
The entire American Ski Team raced on Kästles at the 1956 Cortina Olympics
the company pioneered a three-layered fiberglass
This method was labeled compound-metal-plastic (CPM) and is cited as one of the early versions of the sandwich construction
The transition from wood skis to CPM was not flawless
Anton Kästle sold the Vorarlberg ski factory to Josef Fischer Jr
who merged the company with its family business Fischer Sports AG
This period marked the best years for Kästle
with around 400,000 pairs of skis manufactured at its Hohenems factory each year
Kästle saw sustained success with its World Cup racing program during the 1980s
Andreas Wenzel of Lichtenstein won the overall World Cup in 1980
He was followed by Switzerland’s Pirmin Zurbriggen who was picked as the “Swiss skier of the 20th century.” He won the overall World Cup in 1984
a Downhill gold medal in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary
and a total of nine World Championship medals with gold medals in Downhill
In what may be considered one of his most amazing accomplishments
he had a double victory at Kitzbuhel winning back-to-back Downhills on the famed Streif race course in 1985
he won 40 World Cup races in all five disciplines: Downhill
Unfortunately despite the racing successes
Fischer sold Kästle to the Italian conglomerate Benetton
three years after Anton Kästle Sr.’s death
Benetton merged Kästle‘s operations with the Italian brand Nordica
and by 1998 the combined ski manufacturer dropped the Kästle skis brand entirely
“The current Kästle camp relies on modern execution of a traditional construction
with a signature damping system called Hollowtech adorning every tip.”
a joint stock company controlled by retired Czech ski racer Tomáš Němec
Němec aggressively planned to expand the brand and restore it as one of the industry’s most recognized names
The company’s headquarters and development division remained in Hohenems
but some production was moved to ConsilSport’s plant in the Czech Republic which was producing 100,000 pairs of skis per year
The company set its sights on returning to World Cup racing; however
the path to becoming a FIS-recognized brand proved rockier than anticipated
Austrian tech skier Katharina Liensberger signed with the company
A conflict with the Austrian Ski Federation ensued as Liensberger could not find a boot company in its official equipment pool willing to supply her
Liensberger was not allowed to race in the season-opening Sölden Giant Slalom and she quickly re-signed with her former sponsor
Kästle solved this problem for the following season by forming partnerships with Dalbello and Lange for boots
Since the return of Kästle to the Alpine World Cup in November 2022
Alpine skiers include Ester Ledecká (Olympic double gold medalist in skiing and snowboarding
& Combined) & Jasmine Flury (World Championship Downhill Gold & World Cup Downhill victory)
These athletes continue to build Kästle’s racing legacy
an Austrian Speed skier returning from maternity leave
was back in the starting gate forerunning the Saalbach Downhill on a pair of Kästle RX 12 Downhill skis
Tippler has 10 podiums split between Downhill and Super-G and at the 2022 Winter Olympics
she missed the Super-G bronze medal by three-hundredths of a second
The former Solomon athlete will race on Kästle’s for the 2024-2025 season
the resurrected company aims to become a leading player in the global ski market
While its top skis are still a premium product
It controls all aspects of product development
“Fast As Ever” has become its new slogan
Kästle has 37 sponsored athletes competing in World Cup Alpine
It has skiers competing in the World Freeride Tour and Speed Skiing; it currently sponsors several athletes and national teams on the Europa Cup circuit
Kästle sponsors High Potentials and Ambassadors programs comprised of an additional 29 athletes
Its High Potential skiers are working to establish themselves at the upper levels of competitive Alpine
and former racers who love to share their passion for skiing with others are Kästle Ambassadors
These support and outreach strategies reflect the company’s desire to generate market exposure
Němec is making good on his promise to restore the Kästle brand to prominence
From Anton Kästle’s original workshop to its modern factories in Austria and the Czech Republic
the 100-year-old brand has overcome adversity
Despite ownership changes and even absences from the market
the company continues to be a technological leader and successful in multiple domains of modern competitive skiing
Given its dedication to Anton Kästle’s legacy of focussing on quality craftsmanship
the future is looking bright for this Austrian ski brand

gefolgt von der Ausstellung «A Place of Our Own»
Seit bald zwanzig Jahren lenkt Hanno Loewy
From many points of view it was an unusual bigway training event
As Austria had quite strict travel measures in place
the initial 96-person team had to be cut in half and only 48 lucky skydivers could participate
The plan of 2-plane formations changed to single-plane formations doing 16-ways from a Cessna Caravan
but we greatly missed our friends from the UK
Russia and Scandinavia who could not join the party
but as the prognosis was bad from the start we felt lucky to jump as much as we could
The team was patient during the many stand-by periods and did their absolute best jumping through holes in the clouds and landing like pros
The record of “zero” injuries was well earned 🙂.
changing participants and coaches every day
Although most of us battled with the rust we had from not jumping a lot in the last period we were happy to get back in the air with our favorite gang.
Complicated 16-way sequential jumps were prepared by Patrick
all under the lens of our camera team who did an awesome job for us
After the first jumps it was evident that our general skills took a bit of a hit in the last period due to the lack of training
We lost track of the list of schoolboy errors that you almost never see with this team: people going under the formation
wrong grips… Without giving us a lot of grief our LOs stayed on the positive side and enjoyed the free drinks that were paid by the culprits
although the message was clear: “We know it’s been tough not jumping much
but you need to get your shit together!”
changing slots and exit positions as much as possible to make the training count
Every jump was treasured and the feeling of “we know how to do this stuff” soon returned
This event is famous for providing a little more than a normal skydiving event – early evening ‘innhopp’ jumps to the Kanisfluh Mountain and Lake Constance
We were lucky enough to do the innhopp jump in the mountains at the end of the first day
We all hope that this format will be kept forever because those jumps are simply magical
Being in freefall beside the mountain top and flying our canopies near them is amazing to say the least
The barbeque organized at the landing site was the perfect setup for our sky family to reconnect and enjoy this special place
Although we didn’t have the chance to jump at the lake this year
One more reason to go back next time 🙂.
what a joy to be present in Austria this June
And even though the weather played with us
If you’ve never had the chance to jump at UPCS – Skydive Hohenems you really need to put it on the list
The dropzone is located in a spectacular location
with the mountains on one side and Lake Constance on another
The ride to altitude is “charging” in the best possible way – I could happily stay in the plane and watch the vista forever 🙂
especially after this long period of Covid restrictions
Everybody was happy to be back to do good skydives
We tried to also organize good evenings so the people enjoyed their time here at Hohenems
it was good to be back to some kind of “normal”!”
the Sequential Gang organizers are busy making plans in Europe and US for 2021 and 2022 and reorganizing the events that were cancelled in the last two years
We are looking forward to the moment when the whole sequential gang will be able to be together for the BIG challenges that are prepared for us
It was really good to see everyone here after this strange period even if we missed a lot of people but we managed to have a great time together anyway
The weather didn’t help but we shared good jumps
we mixed the groups to avoid difference in level skills
It worked good and we hope the people were happy to do it
The atmosphere during the evenings was great
Markus outdid himself in his efforts for us to feel good at Hohenems
We hope next year will be back to normal and a full team of three 32-ways.”
And because pictures can talk a thousand words I hope you’ll enjoy the awesome photos that were taken during this super-special event!
Andreea started skydiving at 16 years old and the step between hobby and passion was almost immediately made

BOSTON — Peter Luddy waited more than 20 years to be reunited with his daughter
and the last 90 minutes may have been the longest
"This is killing me," the Harwich house painter
business owner and former selectman said as he paced back and forth Tuesday night in front of the customs exit door at Logan International Airport
arrived at the Boston airport in a limousine with his wife
and his younger daughter from another marriage
the waiting area was almost empty when 21-year-old Justina finally walked through the doors
clasped her face in his hands and gave her a kiss
Luddy was the subject of a 1994 article in the Times about his divorce from Justina's mother
and their long-distance dispute over child support
She never returned and the couple's messy divorce resulted in a long-distance fight over whether Luddy would pay child support
after an agreement in Orleans District Court with the Massachusetts Department of Revenue acting for the Republic of Austria
because he had not been guaranteed access to his children
He and Linder never re-established contact
although Luddy said he sent gifts to his children through his former in-laws
Luddy reached Linder in Austria through her sister
She agreed to pass on his telephone and email contact to their two children
his phone rang and Justina was on the other end
'You were in my heart every day,' " Luddy said
"A stone has fallen from my soul," his daughter replied
Justina said she was "very excited" to meet her father and her half-sister
is traveling in the Los Angeles area and plans to visit his father later this summer
Luddy moved to Harwich in 1988 and became active in civic groups and politics
He was elected selectman in 1995 and served for seven years
He started a painting contractor's business
in 2007 and the couple operates Harwich Remodeling on Route 28
He has continued his daily meet-and-greet sessions with residents that he started when he was selectman
He sits in his painting contractor's truck at the Harwich Port Post Office parking lot each morning and hears the gripes
"(Justina's) not going to believe how many people know about her," he said last week
Luddy is looking forward to getting to know his daughter
they were engrossed in animated conversation
was an item Luddy is anxious to see — a photo album of his daughter from the last 20 years
"I've sent enough white light over and I always expected white light to come back," he said this week
Last year was the first edition of this event
whom I met at the Klatovy 100-way Challenge three years ago
proposed to me to organize a group of 32 very experienced skydivers
Hohenems is the biggest and most important of all
capable of running a Grand Cessna Caravan in profit
despite a number of jumps that seems low compared to the activity of many centres of Europe
run like the great cooperative centres found in France
Secretary and Treasurer; these are annually renewed at each general meeting so this team knows to keep the Center healthy and in good spirits
Skydive Hohenems works with a fully paid Grand Cessna Caravan
which offers a financial security for this lovely club DZ
Episode number 1 photos went crazy on social media last year
so the 2017 edition easily doubled in numbers
was asked by Skydive Hohenems to organize a second group of 32
allowing two rotations for the two Caravans flying in formation
the DZ’s own Caravan and one from a German centre 20 minutes flying time away
I was surprised to find that Skydive Hohenems is not so far from the French border
so it’s not so far from anywhere in Europe
near beautiful Lake Constance on the borders of Switzerland
It’s under two hours by car from the Zurich or Munich airports
I understood why participants found it easy to discover the charms of jumping in Austria
The format of the event was 20 challenging jumps over 4 days
with rolling green fields meandering down to gorgeous valleys bordered by stunning mountains
Between Lake Constance on one side and the mountains on the other
and the big summer clouds on the hills looked magnificent
Twelve nations were represented on the two groups
The centre’s facilities are minimal but sufficient
Everything fits into a single hangar and the landing zone is long
We had four days of delightful fun and games for this second edition of the VIP 32-way
with six jumps a day for each of the two groups
first take-off at 8:15 and one last jump sufficiently enough to take the time to enjoy the evening
with four loads of 16 for what is called an “in-hopp”
landing between two mountains and a long green valley lost in the Austrian reliefs
We were warmly welcomed by the Model Aircraft Club
Around the rustic wooden club building there were barbecues
this was everything the group of 60 needed to feel at one with the world
It was a great pleasure to organize this highly skilled 32-way group
and mixing the difficulty and flow according to the type of break
because they you have the fun of formation loads
but the load is small enough for everyone to move for 3 or 4 points
and vary slots and difficulty while doing great quality jumps
Skydive Hohenems plans to organize the VIP 32-way Sequentials next year – Edition number 3
I was very happy that most of my group wants to return
And if we have more talented jumpers that want to come to this unique event
we could make a third group to come and play
because after all this part of Austria is not so far
Vandals daubed swastikas and anti-migrant slogans on Muslim and Jewish graves over the weekend in western Austria
The perpetrators targeted the graves and building of a Jewish cemetery in the town of Hohenems
Police sources confirmed that swastikas appeared on its walls
Swastikas and racist graffiti also appeared at a Muslim cemetery in the nearby municipality of Altach
Police are linking this case to an earlier spate of vandalism against a refugee hostel and Jewish museum two weeks ago
Swastikas appeared on walls of the Jewish district
The phrase “Stop the asylum flood” appeared on a refugee hostel
Hohenems mayor, Richard Amman, had recently received a letter from far-right extremists
He is also in a legal battle over the disputed mayoral elections with a candidate from the far-right Freedom Party (FPO)
The FPO had claimed victory with 43.3 per cent; but a runoff secured Amman’s election with the smallest of margins
Back in Feburary, swastikas were daubed on the walls of a Vienna mosque, as Austria prepared for its official Pegida-inspired march. Other recent incidents of Islamophobia and antisemitsm in Austria included an assault on two Jewish men, which included shouts of “Scheissjuden” (“Shitty Jews”)
