Holodeck Architects extends and renovates the Kulturzentrum Mattersburg’s building
a brutalist development created in 1976 by Herwig Graf
adding large public areas and at the same time preserving the existing sculptural elements of the exposed-concrete building
This project has been awarded a 2023 International Architecture Award from The Chicago Athenaeum and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies
The building ensemble of the Culture Center includes the state archive
Sensitively positioned in the park-like landscape
the overall composition surges into the steep Wulkalände opposite a sweepingly inclining railway embankment
The introduction of a generous new public space
integrating the derelict area between the cultural and research ensemble and the education facilities
The urban and architectural concept includes the preservation of this sculptural identity and the introduction of a new public square for a multitude of users
a spatial layout orientating its accessibility on its positioning to the new middle school
a direct link to the renewed train station
as well as the reintegration of the preserved structures in the overall vivid
concrete structure lies opposite the flexible and partible event hall and state archive
and in the landscape precisely embedded contemporarily interpreted and exposed-concrete kubus
which evolved from two distinctive architectural times
the Brutalism period and the Contemporary period
a spatial and functional joint made of steel and glass

Tomas Rosicky made his Arsenal debut as Arsène Wenger's side got their Austrian tour off to a winning start at SV Mattersburg on Tuesday night
Goals from Jeremie Aliadiere and Justin Hoyte gave the visitors the advantage before Jurgen Patocka replied with 20 minutes of the match remaining
It was enough to see off a handy side who are looking forward to UEFA Cup football this season
Kolo Toure and the Emmanuels (Eboue and Adebayor) also played their first pre-season games after World Cup duty
But real story of the night revolved around Rosicky
He did not do that much in his 29 minutes on the field but there were tell-tale signs of the class that saw Wenger prise him from Borussia Dortmund in late May
The four World Cup players had only one role in the first half
to soak up the sweltering Burgenland sun on the substitute's bench and watch youngsters like Armand Traore
Mark Randall and Matthew Connolly and Nicklas Bendtner attempt to impress their manager
Traore sent over a low cross from the left and Aliadiere thumped home on the volley at the near post
Alex Hleb broke clear and outpaced the Mattersburg defence to go one-on-one with keeper Thomas Borenitsch
He saved well with his legs and Aliadiere nodded the rebound over the bar with the goal at his mercy
The home side gradually gathered themselves after a shaky start and in the 17th minute Bernd Kaintz whipped in a low shot that Pascal Cygan cut out for a corner
Then Goce Sedloski's free-kick hit the wall and Michael Morz picked up the rebound
The midfielder fired in a cross-shot that Almunia did well to parry
The keeper pulled off an even better save on the half-hour when Morz tried to go around him
The Spaniard thrust out an arm prod the ball away from the midfielder's feet
Wenger made only two substitutions at the interval - Mart Poom for Almunia and Arturo Lupoli for Bendtner
But the home side nearly got into the game when the new keeper spilled a high shot from Kaintz
The little Czech international immediately took up a position on the left-hand side of midfield
In the 70th minute Patocka swung over a free-kick from the left and Patrick Burger sent a stooping header bouncing off the woodwork
Almost immediately Christian Fuchs sent a corner to the far post and Patocka steered in a header home off the woodwork
However the expected rally from the home side never materialised and Arsenal held on to their victory with ease

The following workers were sent out onto the field by Trainer Djuricin: Richard Strebinger took his place in goal as the club's new number 1- with the number proudly emblazoned on his back. Steffen Hofmann was also in the starting 11, as was debutant Eren Keles, the talented 23-year-old winger who made the step up to the first team squad over the summer. Tamas Szanto was unlucky to miss out through injury, having put in impressive work during pre-season.
The start of the second half saw the guests beginning to exploit their man advantage and threaten Strebinger's goal. A free-kick from Gruber went dangerously close (53.), but just as Mattersburg looked to be getting on top, a goal materialised at the other end: Thomas Schrammel swung a cross deep into the box, beautifully picking out Max Wöber, who rose to power a header past Kuster and double Rapid's advantage - 2:0 (57.)!
Rapid did muster a reaction as they sought to salvage the three points, but when Schaub's fine solo run ended with a shot over the bar, the Green & Whites finally ran out of time and steam and had to settle for a point (88.). Next week we travel to Lower Austria to face St. Pölten looking to register an early maximum points haul. (gw)

Attacker Ilco Naumoski scored his fourth goal of the season for Mattersburg during today’s 2:1 loss against Rapid Wien
Ilco Naumoski played up front for Mattersburg in a 4-4-2 formation where he was partnered by fellow striker Patrick Bürger
Naumoski scored the lone goal for Mattersburg in the 45th minute and played until the 64th minute when he was substituted by Thorsten Röcher
Mattersburg led 1:0 at the time of the substitution but Rapid Wien managed to score two goals in the 69th and 79th minute to record a come from behind victory that moved them into a tie for first place on the table
The goal by Naumoski in the 45th minute came following a long goal kick from the Mattersburg keeper which was misplayed by the Rapid Wien defenders and goalkeeper which led to Naumoski capitalizing on the mistake and giving Mattersburg the 1:0 lead just before halftime
The goal was extra special for Naumoski since he spent a couple of years playing for the Rapid Wien youth system earlier in his career before the club then decided to part ways with Ilco
Naumoski has now scored all of his four goals during the past five league games for Mattersburg
Mattersburg suffered another loss and remained second from bottom on the table with only 13 points after 16 league games in the Austrian top division
