me 20 years ago what my life would look like today I would have never imagined I’d be a professional soccer player living in Germany married to an Austrian woman and living unapologetically as my most authentic self But as I grew older and began to develop my sense of self I realized I was different in more ways than one I am a bi-racial woman that identifies as lesbian My childhood and early adolescence was beautiful in the sense that nothing was missing I had everything I wanted: a loving family But as I grew older and shedded my sense of naïveté and bliss I became acutely aware of my own behavioral “differences” and the micro-aggressions directed at me my awkward insecurities appeared as normal growing pains No one imagined the immense struggle and internal war being waged within myself It started first with my physical appearance of having darker skin and a curlier hair texture and later developed into the shame and guilt of navigating my sexuality I always questioned the “normality” of myself a ranking of LGBTQI-inclusive athletic department policies and practices I accepted my first pro contract playing in France and all alone for the first time in my life I was on a high from my success in college and was hoping to make the same waves in Europe I quickly found out that France would not be as accepting of me There were a handful of English-speaking players on the team I quickly grew close with one teammate who is still in my life today and one of my best friends but a rumor spread to the president of the club that she and I were dating I received a very intense phone call from my agent warning me to stay away from my best friend because people believed we were more than friends He said that people would get the wrong idea and that the club does not want any couples on the team He also said that we were a distraction and sending the wrong message to the fans Everything I previously feared regarding judgements and rumors that could seriously impact my livelihood I obsessed over the thought that I was just a distraction I got nervous to go to team events and my performance on the team took a nosedive My play time fell and I didn’t want to go to practice my wife and I will have the same name on the back of our jerseys and an overwhelming sense of pride on our backs I play for a club that celebrates who I am I met my wife and we both play for FC Köln in Germany I had been searching for a place that would only judge me by game performance and not by who I choose to love Ask any athlete under what conditions they perform the best and I can guarantee the answer will always include when they have the most confidence I’m proud to join Athlete Ally as an Ambassador and spread the message that every athlete should be able to play and live freely without the heaviness of shame and guilt weighing them down being public about the love of your life shouldn’t be a burden Want to receive stories like this in your inbox? wrought-iron gates of unusual delicacy and detail throughout the district And for that — and the fact that Detroit is now becoming known as a city of murals — we can probably thank Diego Rivera Alfaro Siquieros and José Clemente Orozco they helped define Mexican identity and patriotism with a series of stirring “Because of ‘Los Tres Grandes,’ ” said Valdez with a grin He notes that at the same time Rivera and company were remaking the walls of Mexico City the Works Progress Administration artists’ program underwrote an explosion of murals in American post offices If you’d like a peek at actual muralists at work Valdez and Brooklyn artist Katie Yamasaki — granddaughter of Detroit architect Minoru Yamasaki — will be working on the restoration of a mural at 4802 W The mural was started years ago as a project to bring members of rival teenage gangs together Valdez won a Knight Arts Challenge grant to restore and complete the wall which will be titled “Shield of Peace and Non-Violence,” in homage to those killed in gang violence over the decades Soon the circular red shield with the crouching Aztec warrior which was the only part the original artists completed will be framed by two heroic Mexican goddesses and a pair of magic creatures guarding the composition and the street Valdez has tried to track down the original artists Once word gets out that he and Yamasaki A look at the finances should put a smile on Thomas Tebbich's face again this year After setting a record in the 2022/23 financial year with a turnover of EUR 44.7 million the balance sheet for the current financial year should also look more than good "We're at a similar level," said Sturm's Managing Director for Economic Affairs during the Conference League match in Lille One obstacle continues to be the smouldering stadium issue The European Cup alone has developed into good business for Sturm the team from Graz earned a total of EUR 9.154 million in 2022/23 the runners-up have already earned over EUR 6.3 million in bonuses which will only be settled at the end of the season and could amount to around EUR 3 million It is one of the "core elements" that Tebbich sees for Sturm's profitability This also includes the club's above-average transfer income over the past two years Rasmus Höjlund and Emanuel Emegha last July each brought in over ten million euros In addition to the sporting side - spending on the squad has increased noticeably in recent seasons - the club has also launched an infrastructure offensive as part of its "Agenda 2028" Training center in PuntigamA training center is being built on a former golf course in the Puntigam district at a cost of EUR 12.5 million The city of Graz and the state are contributing EUR 7.9 million The rest will be provided by the club and an as yet unspecified partner The facility will be used solely by the women's team and the youth department while Messendorf will increasingly provide space for the men's professionals in the future It will take some time until then: According to the club's plans work on the Puntigam facility should begin in winter at the latest In Kürze bekommen Sie eine Bestätigungs-Mail von uns The Liebenau issue continues to be far more complicated for Sturm's managers It is obvious that the home arena has not kept pace with the club's growth Before the draw for the Conference League round of 16 there was uncertainty as to whether Sturm would be allowed to play at home If Eintracht Frankfurt had been drawn as the opponent Graz would not have been an option as a venue due to infrastructural deficiencies Sturm wants more rights in the stadiumFor the time being there are no signs of a solution in the interplay with the city of Graz a list of questions regarding the cost structure of the arena had already been submitted to the city government in the fall Sturm wants to acquire the building rights in the Merkur Arena and the VIP area and canteen are also to be managed by the club itself in future the club would have to spend a sum in the double-digit millions A security package for the arena was also drawn up together with GAK which is about to be promoted to the Bundesliga In addition to the future division of the fan sectors this also includes modifications in line with UEFA guidelines "Both Sturm and GAK must meet the requirements of the respective competitions - in the Bundesliga or in the European club competitions," said Tebbich The extent to which GAK will cut into the financial cake in Graz in future is not a major issue for Sturm But if you look at advertising analyses or reach then we're talking about two different companies," says Tebbich Sturm offers a much larger platform in this respect With an average of over 14,700 spectators in Liebenau Sturm is also heading for a record in Bundesliga history Willkommen in unserer Community!
