Peter as the geographic midpoint on our treks to the Twin Cities
It meant there were only two more towns before Belle Plaine
which was essentially “the cities” to us southern folk
there were no stoplights in the town I grew up in (speaking of
There was always something so serene about St
watching the brick- and tree-lined Main Street go by
Since the highway runs directly through town
there’s no choice but to slow down and admire the effortless
small-town feel and generations of families navigating their safe little corner of the world
and I’m hard-pressed to think of a more Minnesota place for a day of exploration or peaceful weekend escape
tracing back to the early 1850s when Swedish immigrants settled in the area
it played a pivotal role in the early history of Minnesota
even earning a place in the conversation about the state’s capital—before St
Peter was a serious contender due to its central location along the Minnesota River
It was even recommended as the capital by some of Minnesota’s early political leaders
a last-minute maneuver in the state’s legislative branch prevented the change (a chairman actually hid the physical bill to stop it from happening)
Though it didn’t turn out to be the capital
Peter’s historical importance is undeniable
The city played a pivotal role in one of the most consequential events in Minnesota’s history: the signing of the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux in 1851
marked a defining moment in the relationship between the United States government and the Dakota people
the Dakota Nation ceded about 24 million acres of land to the U.S.
which included much of what would become southern and central Minnesota
though these promises were never fully honored
The land that had been home to the Dakota for centuries was quickly transformed
accelerating the state’s settlement and expansion
positioned as it was along the Minnesota River
emerged as an important regional center during this transition period
St. Peter’s historic charm is evident in its beautifully preserved downtown area, where visitors can stroll past buildings that tell the story of the town’s Swedish heritage and early American settlement. The Treaty Site History Center
the headquarters of the Nicollet County Historical Society
is a perfect place to start your journey through the area’s history
With exhibits that delve into the town’s founding
the museum is a great way to connect with the area’s rich past
the Convent of the Sisters of Saint Francis stands as a striking example of the town’s historical architecture
Its serene presence adds a touch of peace and beauty to this already picturesque downtown
a Gothic-revival architecture built in 1869
the bell from the original wooden church built in 1855 on this site has rung on the death of every American president since Abraham Lincoln
If you’re looking for a dose of local art and creativity, stop by the St. Peter Arts Center

Over 130 cardinal electors will vote in the conclave
the largest group of cardinal electors ever

the more “representation” those Catholics get in the conclave via the cardinal or cardinals who serve them.

The upcoming conclave to elect the successor to Pope Francis will be the largest in the history of the Catholic Church

At a time when some postulate that Europe might soon become irrelevant because of the increasing prominence of the Global South — where the Church is growing fastest — it remains

With currently 53 of the 135 voting cardinals coming from Europe — a third of whom are Italians — their collective priorities and concerns will influence not only the choice of the next pope but also the direction of the Church in a rapidly changing world.

Saint Peter’s Hospital Acute Care Chief Medical Officer Dr
Nick Montalto says the new technology is safer for both practitioners and patients
“It allows us to do very minimally invasive surgeries through very small incisions with very fast recoveries for patients that were that is really a tremendous advance,” Montalto said
the ability to actually feel tissue and the manipulation of the instruments is something that has not existed before,” Montalto said
Montalto says the level of precision possible through modern robotic surgery machines is unmatched
“Instead of the equivalent of looking at a television screen
now you see as if you’re in the body
And so that visualization lets you see blood vessels that are so small you never would have been able to see them before
You see actual capillaries,” Montalto said

ROME — The body of Pope Francis was moved this morning to lie in state at St
A choir sang and cardinals chanted in Latin as the body was carried in a red velvet-lined open casket
For three days mourners will be able to pay their respects
People stood in a long line that snaked across St
Some held umbrellas to shield them from the sun as they waited for their moment to enter St
"I wanted to see him alive," said Margarita Harvey from El Salvador
"But I would love to at least see his body
she'll find Francis lying in a single wooden casket
holding a rosary and wearing the papal miter — the ceremonial head dress
the pontiff was laid inside three nested coffins: one of cypress wood
It was part of a display of the pope's dual role as a global figure and spiritual leader
They would be covered with a gold cloth and lie in state on a raised pedestal in front of the altar in St
Pope Francis tried to strip away the more ornate aspects of the role
trying to keep a little of the ordinary even in his very extraordinary job
Shunning much of the wealth and frills that come with the role
He chose to remain in the Santa Marta apartment where he stayed when he came as a cardinal to Rome
rather than move to the traditional papal residence at the Vatican
He chose simpler outfits and kept his plastic watch
A few weeks after he became pope aids at the Vatican urged him to wear white trousers to match his white cassock
I don't want to look like an ice cream seller."
This was evident as he moved through the crowds in St
He was in his popemobile without a bullet proof glass barrier
hugging members of the public in the crowd of some 50,000
The Vatican now says Francis was so weak he'd worried about whether he could cope with the appearance
But afterwards he reportedly said to Massimiliano Strappetti
his personal health care assistant: "Thank you for bringing me back to the square."
His funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m
It will be presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re
the 91-year-old dean of the College of Cardinals
It could become a significant political event too
with the possibility for some sensitive meetings on the sidelines
President Trump has confirmed he will attend. As will Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy — which sets up the potential for them to meet for the first time since that tense public exchange at the White House in February.
This will be Trump's first foreign trip of his second term and the first time he's in the same space as other key leaders, like European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, since he caused widespread tumult and chaos in the financial markers, which his decision to place high import taxes on goods including from countries allied to the United States
The Italian government says over 100 foreign delegations are coming
And it estimates as many as 200,000 people may attend overall
Many popes are traditionally buried in the Vatican Grottoes beneath St
But Francis has chosen to be laid to rest outside the Vatican
at a church in a part of Rome that has a bigger immigrant community
Mary Major is where he'd pray to the Salus Popoli Romani
an icon of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus before and after each trip out of Rome
Preparations are now underway at the church to receive Francis' casket
On Tuesday wooden chipboard covered the niche where he will be buried
beside the chapel that houses the Virgin Mary icon
Francis called for his tomb to be "in the ground; simple
and with the sole inscription: Franciscus,'' or Latin for Francis
Spanish priest Rubén Martínez spoke of the sense of anticipation that weighs in the air
He had arrived to Rome just an hour before

this is about Pope Francis' ascent to heaven

Ukrainian presidential spokesman Serhii Nykyforov said
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung also confirmed the meeting and said they “met privately today and had a very productive discussion.”
Pope Francis regularly prayed for peace in Ukraine. He commissioned Italian Cardinal Matteo Zuppi as a papal envoy to push for peace between Russia and Ukraine. And in his final appearance on Easter Sunday

Shortly after arriving in Rome last Friday
Trump said on social media that Ukraine and Russia should meet for “very high-level talks” on ending the three-year war sparked by Russia’s invasion
met with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier Friday
and Trump said both sides were “very close to a deal.”
Zelenskyy said that “very significant meetings may take place” in coming days
and that an unconditional ceasefire was needed
“Real pressure on Russia is needed so that they accept either the American proposal to cease fire and move towards peace
or our proposal — whichever one can truly work and ensure a reliable
and then — a dignified peace and security guarantees,” he said
And we are doing everything to make diplomacy truly meaningful and finally effective.”

Memorial shrine for Pope Francis in St Peter's Square
My name is Michael O’Rourke and I’m from Liverpool
and I wanted to see the Pope one last time and to say thank you for his service for the church
What does the atmosphere feel like to you today
It’s good to see a lot of young people here as well
Did you come to Rome just for the Pope’s funeral
I was going to come for the canonisation of Carlos Acutis
but I decided not to because of work commitments
I think he gave a human face to the Church
and I think he helped people who maybe felt alienated from the Church to feel more welcome
And what do you hope for the direction of the Church
I hope the next Pope has a conservative mind but a liberal heart
but has got his heart and arms open to the world
Can you tell me your name and where you are coming from today
I’m 17 years old and I’m coming from Australia
We’re here to mourn the passing over Pope Francis and to pay our respects to him one last time
It is kind of half-fortunate that we are here for this because
something like this doesn’t happen every day
We were originally here for the Jubilee of teenagers
for a two week Catholic expedition sort of thing and we have been going around to a lot of religious sites
Pope Francis was a big symbol of peace to me
no matter what your religion was or who you were
not just who he was associated with in the Vatican
So we came about a week ago to celebrate Holy Week and to stay for the Jubilee of teenagers
It’s just so happened that Pope Francis has unfortunately died
so obviously we wanted to come for his funeral today
And what does it mean to you to be here for Pope Francis’ funeral
It’s amazing because it’s something that we’re not going to see much of in our lifetime
We’re probably only going to see another one or two
So it’s amazing to be part of such history
What do you hope for the future of the Church after today
I hope that the Church keeps on moving forward welcoming people
Can you tell me your name and where you’re from
I’m here with other students from St Ignatius High School
we came here for the canonisation of Blessed Carlo Acutis but
a change of plans led us to Saint Peter’s Square for the funeral of Pope Francis
he meant a lot to the people at my High School because of his emphasis on social justice
our environment and being good stewards of God’s creation
What do you want to see in the future of the Church
our spiritual father in the Catholic faith
One thing that most inspired me about Pope Francis is his love for the poor and the marginalised
What do you hope for the future of the Church
My general hope for the future of the Church is for us to grow in unity and peace
We need to all remember that we are all children of God
Can you tell me your name and where you’re coming
Our group today is coming from New Jersey in the United States
I’m very Catholic and I felt really bad for the whole situation of the Pope
especially for young people in promoting happiness and compassion
What did Pope Francis mean to you personally
I was so excited when he was Pope because he’s Latin American
so for me it was a real pleasure to have a Spanish Pope
His legacy of encouraging young people to be happy and to not be so serious
What direction would you like to see the Church take
I hope that the future Pope coming in will follow the same legacy that Pope Francis had started because he created a lot of change for the church in a positive way
So I hope that the future Pope will follow in his footsteps
I was born in Hungary but have been living in Canada for the past 40 years
The Bible says that those who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God
and the Lord is leading me through the Holy Spirit to this place
because this is a very historically important time
and he also had a gift from God to demonstrate the Gospel of Jesus Christ very effectively

The coffin of the late Pope Francis was sealed in a ritual in St
after around 250,000 pilgrims had paid their respects to the Argentine-born Pope
as well as a "Rogito" or Deed summarizing his life and papacy
the Holy See Press Office published the full text of the Deed
written in Latin and sealed inside a metal cylinder
The following is a working English-language translation of the Deed:
DEED FOR THE PIOUS PASSING OF HIS HOLINESS FRANCIS DEATH
AND ENTOMBMENT OF FRANCIS OF BLESSED MEMORY
guide and companion on the journey toward the great goal to which we are called—Heaven—the 21st day of April in the Holy Year 2025
while the light of Easter illumined the second day of the Octave
gave praise to God for the gift of his service rendered with courage and faithfulness to the Gospel and to the mystical Bride of Christ
His memory remains in the heart of the Church and of all humanity
was born in Buenos Aires on 17 December 1936
to Piedmontese immigrants: his father Mario was an accountant employed by the railways
took care of the home and the education of their five children
After earning a diploma as a chemical technician
passing to the novitiate of the Society of Jesus
He pursued humanistic studies in Chile and
graduated in philosophy at the San Giuseppe college in San Miguel
He was a professor of literature and psychology at the colleges of the Immaculate Conception in Santa Fé and of the Savior in Buenos Aires
He received priestly ordination on 13 December 1969 from Archbishop Ramón José Castellano
and on 22 April 1973 he made his perpetual profession in the Jesuits
After serving as novice master at Villa Barilari in San Miguel
consultor of the Argentine province of the Society of Jesus
on 31 July 1973 he was appointed provincial of the Jesuits of Argentina
After 1986 he spent several years in Germany completing his doctoral dissertation and
Cardinal Antonio Quarracino made him his close collaborator
On 20 May 1992 Pope John Paul II named him Titular Bishop of Auca and Auxiliary Bishop of Buenos Aires
He chose as his episcopal motto Miserando atque eligendo and inserted the Christogram IHS
On 3 June 1997 he was promoted Coadjutor Archbishop of Buenos Aires and upon Cardinal Quarracino’s death succeeded him on 28 February 1998 as Archbishop
Ordinary for the faithful of Eastern rites residing in the country
and Grand Chancellor of the Catholic University
John Paul II created him cardinal in the consistory of 21 February 2001
That October he served as Adjunct General Rapporteur at the Tenth Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops
He was a simple and much-beloved pastor in his Archdiocese
He lived in an apartment and prepared his own dinner
From the Cardinals assembled in conclave after Benedict XVI’s resignation
he was elected Pope on 13 March 2013 and took the name Francis
following the example of Saint Francis of Assisi
he wished above all to care for the poorest in the world
From the Loggia of Blessings he appeared and spoke the following the words:
This journey of the Church of Rome which presides in charity over all the Churches
he said: “I ask you to pray to the Lord that he will bless me: the prayer of the people asking the blessing for their Bishop.”
Always attentive to the least and to those discarded by society
Francis upon his election chose to live at the Domus Sanctae Marthae
because he could not do without contact with people
and from the first Holy Thursday he wished to celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper outside the Vatican
He urged priests always to be ready to administer the sacrament of mercy
to have the courage to leave the sacristies to go in search of the lost sheep
and to keep the church doors open to welcome those desirous of encountering the Face of God the Father
He exercised the Petrine ministry with untiring dedication in favor of dialogue with Muslims and representatives of other religions
sometimes inviting them to prayer meetings and signing joint declarations for concord among the faithful of different creeds
such as the Document on Human Fraternity signed on 4 February 2019 in Abu Dhabi with the Sunni leader al-Tayyeb
and children led him to inaugurate the World Days of the Poor
He also established the Sunday of the Word of God
More than any predecessor he enlarged the College of Cardinals
calling ten consistories in which he created 163 cardinals—133 electors and 30 non-electors—from 73 nations
23 of which had never before had a cardinal
He convened five sessions of the Synod of Bishops—three ordinary general assemblies on the family
and on synodality; an extraordinary assembly also on the family; and a special session for the Pan-Amazonia region
Often his voice rose in defense of the innocent
on the evening of 27 March 2020 he prayed alone in St
whose colonnade symbolically embraced Rome and the world
for humanity frightened and stricken by the unknown plague
The final years of his pontificate were marked by numerous appeals for peace
against the Third World War in pieces unfolding in various countries—especially Ukraine—as well as in Palestine
lasting ten days for surgery at the Agostino Gemelli Hospital
Francis on 14 February 2025 returned to the same hospital for a 38-day stay due to bilateral pneumonia
he spent his final weeks at Casa Santa Marta
On Easter Day 20 April 2025 for one last time he appeared on the loggia of St
Peter’s Basilica to impart the solemn Urbi et Orbi blessing
Pope Francis’s doctrinal magisterium was extremely rich
attentive to avoiding the pitfalls of self-referentiality and spiritual worldliness in the Church
the Pontiff set forth his apostolic program in the apostolic exhortation Evangelii gaudium (24 November 2013)
Among his principal documents were four encyclicals: Lumen fidei (29 June 2013)
on faith in God; Laudato si’ (24 May 2015)
on ecology and humanity’s responsibility in the climate crisis; Fratelli tutti (3 October 2020)
on human fraternity and social friendship; and Dilexit nos (24 October 2024)
on devotion to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus
He promulgated seven apostolic exhortations
numerous apostolic letters—many motu proprio—including two bullae convocating Holy Years
as well as the catecheses presented at general audiences and discourses given around the world
After establishing the Secretariats for Communications and for the Economy
and for Promoting Integral Human Development
he reformed the Roman Curia by issuing the apostolic constitution Praedicate Evangelium (19 March 2022)
He modified the canonical process for nullity of marriage causes in the CCEO and CIC (Mitis et misericors Iesus and Mitis Iudex Dominus Iesus) and toughened legislation regarding crimes committed by clergy against minors or vulnerable persons (Vos estis lux mundi)
Francis left to all a marvelous witness of humanity

Pope Francis became the first Pope in over 120 years to be buried outside the precincts of St
there have been numerous burial places,” says historian Donald Prudlo
Warren Professor of Catholic Studies at the University of Tulsa
“When a Catholic thinks about the death of the Pope
“And it's true that more than half of the popes in the Church’s history are laid to rest within Saint Peter’s,” dating back to the original church structure built by Constantine
But if Pope Francis' choice to be buried outside St
“is surprising… it is certainly not novel,” Prudlo said
two Popes—Pius IX in the wake of the Italian Risorgimento, and Leo XIII
his immediate successor—found their final resting places in Roman churches
various Popes were laid to rest in different Italian cities
in France (during the period Popes resided at Avignon)
and even as far away as Germany and Ukraine
Prudlo notes that Pope Francis is the eighth Roman Pontiff whose final resting place lies within the walls of the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major
before becoming “a particular place of papal burial in the 16th century.”

Pope Francis’ has been interred in a niche directly adjacent to the chapel housing the icon
“The place of interment can be a symbol of the papacy,” says Prudlo
“This particular choice by Pope Francis is a very powerful one
It reassociates the Catholic Church with devotion to the Virgin Mary
It shows his closeness to the Roman people in his devotion to the Salus Populi Romani icon
And it reinforces the idea that it is not necessary that the popes should be buried at Saint Peter’s.”

This is not a time for hesitation — a true tribute to the late Pope Francis is to pursue peace without pause
