Stern added. The additional cost to OMV will be buffered partially by its insurance coverage.Stern said some airlines are now filling up before they return to Austria "to reduce demand and relax the situation"
whereas before the accident they would have waited until they arrive at Vienna Airport.Stern said he expected OMV's refinery margins to be higher than last year - alongside refinery margins across the globe amid high demand and tight fuel supply - high energy costs and more expensive crude oil were eating into some of those profits.Writing by Shadia Nasralla

Chinese authorities detained the man and put him on a return flight to Austria
The Schwechat city police then met him and questioned him about how he had bypassed multiple security checks
The Korneuburg public prosecutor’s office has charged the man with suspected fraud and violation of the Border Control Act, according to Kurier
Airport officials insist there was no security risk
police and airport officials stressed that passenger safety was never at risk
The man had passed a standard security check
meaning he was screened for dangerous or prohibited items
it should be noted that there was no risk to the safety of passengers or employees at any time," airport spokesperson Peter Kleemann told Kurier
"The person was demonstrably correctly security checked and checked for dangerous or prohibited objects."

An unauthorized passenger tricked the controls at Vienna Airport
The Afghan actually managed to board a plane to China without any papers
The man was only caught by the crew in the air
The airport confirmed the incident to "Krone" and tried to calm things down.
A recent incident at Vienna Airport has set alarm bells ringing
The good news first: according to official information
the resourceful passenger actually passed through the security check properly
he was checked for prohibited items and therefore posed no immediate danger to fellow passengers
sneaked past behind a group of travelers at passport control and used their legitimate border crossing as a cover
The man also performed a Houdini act at boarding
Boarding crew only discovered the man after departureAfter this brazen prank
he took his place - or rather his hiding place - in the on-board toilet
The crew of flight HU790 of the Chinese Hainan Airline from Vienna to Shenzhen only noticed the uninvited passenger in the air
It remains unclear how long he was holed up in the bathroom
It was only after his improvised hiding place was discovered that the Afghan was taken into custody and handed over to the Chinese authorities after landing
Whether sky marshals (a special Cobra unit) were also deployed is something the Ministry of the Interior is keeping under wraps - a secret
The person was properly security checked and checked for dangerous or prohibited objects
Korneuburg public prosecutor's office investigatingUnsurprisingly
where officers from the Schwechat municipal police department received him and questioned him in detail
The unauthorized passenger was reported to the police
He is now being investigated under the Administrative Offenses Act for violating the Border Control Act and under criminal law by the Korneuburg public prosecutor's office on suspicion of fraud
Video footage was viewedThe security breach is a dramatic warning shot for Vienna Airport
which immediately reconstructed the unpleasant events in detail
There should be no successful copycats in the future
The airport and the police assure us that every step taken by the brazen passenger can be retraced
it was possible to meticulously record and document what happened
Security standards were evaluatedThe Lower Austrian State Police Directorate also confirmed the extraordinary coup to the "Krone": "The Schwechat City Police Command evaluated the incident together with those responsible at Vienna-Schwechat Airport in order to optimize security standards," it says in technical jargon

Damage occurring to the outer skin of the CDU’s main column during a legally required water-pressure test as part of the turnaround has now been repaired and
following successful completion of that test in late September and a subsequent phased commissioning period
the refinery has now returned to its full operating capacity
and 8-m wide—involved extensive dismantling and detachment of the 100-tonne column head
as well as processing of 200-tonnes of steel into replacement parts
all of which were assembled and refitted into place in less than 16 weeks
Although the refinery has restarted production of finished products and is replenishing stocks
OMV said it will maintain the alternative supply system established in the wake of the June incident for as long as necessary to continue reliable product deliveries to customers
The Austrian federal government also released fuel from the country’s strategic oil reserves to help supply product to the market during the refinery’s outage
OMV Aktiengesellschaft
is implementing a project involving multiple energy efficiency measures to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at its 9.6-million tonnes/year (tpy) refinery in Schwechat
three of the refinery’s four steam turbines—which
generate 85% of electricity required to operate the refinery—were overhauled with specially molded turbine blades based on modern 3D-blade geometry from Siemens Aktiengesellschaft to increase turbine effectiveness by ensuring better flow
two of the turbines have been outfitted with the 3D-blade geometry
which in addition to enhancing steam turbine performance and efficiency
simultaneously has reduced CO2 emissions by 40,000 tonnes this year
The third turbine will be equipped with the new blading in the coming year to enable a combined 60,000-tpy reduction in CO2 emissions from all three turbines beginning in 2021
Another energy efficiency measure currently under way at Schwechat includes development of a digital twin that uses process simulation to help optimize selection of cleaning cycles and flow conditions in the heat exchangers of the refinery’s crude distillation unit preheat train
OMV said the digital twin will further reduce CO2 emissions at the site by up to 18,000 tpy
OMV also is presently deploying digital controllers throughout the refinery to balance out fluctuations in control loops (e.g.
in the butadiene unit or when reusing exhaust process heat)
deployment of the digital controllers will result in another 4,000-tpy reduction in Schwechat’s CO2 emissions
The energy efficiency measures—developed by a specially formed internal team responsible for implementing optimizations based on needs of each individual OMV site—come as part of OMV’s commitment by 2025 to reduce carbon intensity of its refining operations by at least 20% (vs
the 2010 baseline year) and to reach net-zero emissions of operations by 2050 or sooner

will delay restart of its 9.6-million tonnes/year refinery at the operator’s integrated complex in Schwechat
following an early June upset that occurred at the tail end of the 2022 turnaround
An unidentified mechanical incident occurred on June 3 that damaged the refinery’s main crude oil distillation unit and caused slight injuries to two individuals at the site
An assessment of damage remains under way
and a definitive timetable for duration of the extended shutdown has yet to be determined
Without disclosing further details surrounding the incident
the operator said it will work closely with its customers and suppliers to mitigate any impact on product availability
Confirmation of the June 3 incident follows OMV’s end-May announcement that it was completing final works and checks of the turnaround and preparing systems for restart
the operator said refinery staff was in the process of slowing returning equipment to operation at the site
overall production was scheduled to resume once all system parts were safely in “warm” mode and integrated back into the production process
the 2022 turnaround only involved the refining portion of the Schwechat complex
In addition to maintenance and inspection of the refining plants
OMV said it also was using the turnaround period to execute modernization works that would prepare the refinery—Austria’s only—for a reduced-emissions future

gas and chemicals company headquartered in Vienna
has taken the final investment decision to build a chemical recycling demo plant
based on its proprietary ReOil® technology
OMV is taking the next step toward an industrial-scale plant planned for 2026
The patented chemical recycling technology
converts plastic waste into synthetic feedstock
under moderate pressure and normal refinery operating temperatures
which is then primarily used to produce again high-quality plastics
OMV was among the first companies to develop a chemical recycling technology for used plastics more than a decade ago
A ReOil® pilot plant has been operating in the Schwechat refinery since 2018
capable of processing 100 kg of used plastics into 100 liters of synthetic feedstock per hour
The pilot plant has been running for a total of 13,000 hours since its commissioning and thus enabled an improvement in the thermal cracking process and supported the further scale up of the ReOil® technology
The current investment covers the construction of a ReOil® demo plant with a design capacity of 16,000 t/year at the OMV site in Schwechat
Production startup is planned for early 2023
OMV entered into its first-ever green loan agreement which is in alignment with the green loan principles and based on a green and project-specific external due diligence appraisal
and a project-specific green financing framework
The demo plant will turn plastic waste that is not fit to be mechanically recycled and would otherwise be sent to waste incineration into a valuable resource
in close cooperation with local waste management companies
Examples of such plastic waste include food packaging
lids from takeaway coffee and confectionery packaging
Through the chemical recycling of plastics
OMV obtains a pure raw material which can again be used to produce virgin-quality base chemicals and plastics for all types of applications including packaging for the food industry and medical products
which must meet the highest quality and safety standards
“The ReOil® pilot plant has shown that we are on the right track with our in-house developed technology and with our efforts in this field
We are confident that chemical recycling can complement the available mechanical recycling technologies and that it represents a sustainable and profitable solution
we are now taking the next step toward circular economy and thus toward reducing our CO2 emissions”
CEO and Chairman of the Executive Board of OMV Aktiengesellschaft
The plant will be fully integrated within the petrochemical site at the Schwechat refinery
enabling OMV to guarantee the best use of resources
and the highest industrial safety standards
It represents an important step toward developing ReOil® into a commercially viable
industrial-scale chemical recycling technology with a processing capacity of up to 200,000 t/year by 2026
the ReOil® demo plant will be fully ISCC PLUS certified
ISCC PLUS is a sustainability standard well-recognized by all stakeholders for recycled and bio-based materials
providing traceability along the supply chain and verifying that companies meet environmental and social standards
OMV aims to become a leader in the circular economy of plastics
through the Group’s mechanical and chemical recycling activities
OMV and Borealis are among the first industry players to close the loop for plastics and offer a full portfolio of sustainable polyolefin solutions to its customers

a subsidiary of the Norwegian sorting system provider
is currently building a €50-60m sorting facility in Germany
which is to have an annual input capacity of 80,000 tonnes and be operational at the end of 2025
Tomra declined a request for comment on the location of the facility
Tomra Feedstock said that it had developed an innovative process that turns pre-sorted
post-consumer plastic waste that would otherwise end up being landfilled or incinerated into clean fractions of specific polymer types
These fractions can then be processed in mechanical and chemical recycling plants
such as those run by OMV in Austria and Borealis throughout Europe...
