The discovery of a new genetic disease through high precision technology is allowing one family in Hope to finally get the answers they’ve been looking for
“It was a huge relief (getting the diagnosis),” Sarah Traun said
a seven-year-old girl who had a previously undiscovered genetic variant that was responsible for all her symptoms
“When they came to me with her final diagnosis
Rebecca’s diagnosis was discovered thanks to the The BC Children’s Hospital Foundation’s (BCCHF) and BC Children’s Research Institute’s (BCCRI) Precision Health Initiative (PHI) program which
is “a transformative approach for disease prevention and treatment that promises an individualized
molecular view of health and wellness” by “harnessing emerging technologies.”
Rebecca is described by her mother as a confident
social butterfly who loves spending time at school and being with her friends
She was born with an unknown genetic disease (now identified as the recently discovered genetic variant)
This resulted in her having a cleft palate
and being a frequent patient at BC Children’s
more susceptible to getting viral infections
It also takes her longer to recover from these infections
the past few years have been a whirlwind of doctors appointments and tests to try and figure out what disease Rebecca had
this precision analytics team (PHI),” Sarah said
“To try and find an answer for why she was born with what she was born with
we were receiving lots of different diagnoses (since her birth)
And several of them were not fun to receive.”
Sarah said some of the diagnoses they received for Rebecca included Diamond-Blackfan anemia
Though each diagnosis fit some of Rebecca’s symptoms
overall they didn’t feel “right” for her daughter
Sarah said she “wanted to celebrate” after receiving Rebecca’s diagnosis as it meant finally knowing which medical department she belonged to
because her disease affects her immune system
the immunology department are going to be Rebecca’s main doctors from now on
Sarah said her family is really grateful they finally have a name and a proper starting place for Rebecca
And they are grateful for the PHI team who
“They continued to redo research and tests for another two years and three months,” Sarah said
“I would bring her down to BC Children’s at least once a month
The head of the research team would always visit with us
He would answer all of our questions and provide updates
And whenever they discovered something new (about the disease)
he would talk to us about how this explains why she presents with this symptom and why she gets sick
“I now understand where the mutation is on the gene
And it explains why she’s susceptible to viral infections
It explains her cleft palate and explains why she was born with sensory neural hearing loss
a pediatrician who is the lead of the PHI program and the Canada Research Chair in Pediatric Precision Health
the creation of the PHI program has been a game changer in providing answers for children affected by rare diseases
one in 25 children are born or affected by a rare disease and are “very likely to be hospitalized
occupying one in every three hospital beds at BC Children’s Hospital.” Also
half of these children may never receive a diagnosis despite countless rounds of tests and appointments with specialists
over 23 families have enrolled in the PHI program and all have been able to obtain answers
Turvey said the PHI program may be able to solve up to 25 per cent more “mystery cases,” which will push the diagnostic rate up from 50 per cent to 75 per cent
“The idea that we can combine the clinical work
and give these families answers is hugely gratifying,” Turvey said
“I’m delighted to to be able to share that information with people like Rebecca and her family
and help them end their diagnostic odyssey
“The precision health initiative that we have now is using this powerful new technology
There’s 20,000 genes and we don’t know what they all do
the chances that we pick the right one that checks out
example is the discovery of the gain-of-function MARK4 disease — a new genetic disease caused by changes in the MARK4 gene
The gene was first discovered in two siblings through standard genetic testing
because no known neurodevelopmental disorders were associated with a change in the MARK4 gene at the time
doctors were unable to figure out exactly how the change was affecting these siblings
we use this powerful technology called next generation sequencing,” Turvey said
“And that allows us to sequence the genetic makeup of the children
When we looked at what people knew about this gene
we knew it was important for the brain and we knew it was important for the way neurons develop
“What the PHI was able to do was several years (two to three years) of experiments in the lab expressing the boys variants of this chain and comparing it to the more common versions
And we showed that the genetic change caused that gene to function quite differently
we linked this genetic change to the boys’ symptoms.”
Turvey and his team published their findings in international literature
Turvey said that other children around the world
will be able to get a diagnosis much quicker
It also allows for more research and discoveries to be found with the disease
as well as the creation of potential treatments
they’re happy that they can now concretely start the next chapter in Rebecca’s medical journey and future
and I would hope that all families can go through the program and receive answers
you just want to do everything you can to take care of them and help them have a good life

It seems you have set up camp not too far away from a wildlife sanctuary
Let's make sure you didn't startle the rare local fauna
The last “contractors” we had around here were so noisy they made a pair of black storks abandon their nest by the lake
Fun fact: Beaver dams can both help and harm nature
a beaver dam caused such a deluge that it flooded the burrows of a whole bunch of critters
It almost threatened an entire species of rodent
Shall we check what our woodland engineers have been up to
Did you know that bears are just about to wake up from their seasonal slumber
They're not dangerous right now because there are lots of fish and edible plants around
but it's best not to cross the line anyway
We should find the nearest lair and set up a photo trap to track the hungry animal
It turns out that the bear we were so worried about lacks fish in its diet
My colleagues found an abandoned fishing camp nearby
Please find them and bring us proof of their poaching
An astronomer told us they saw a suspicious person lurking around
It might be one of the poachers who just couldn't give up and simply moved on to another fishing spot
I suggest we find their new camp and bring these criminals to justice
Our cargo truck is stuck pretty deep in here
so we're not going anywhere anytime soon
but the peak activity of the annual Virginids meteor shower is coming..
You seem to have the right vehicle for the job
and it's got to be more exciting than chasing squirrels for those conservation activists
I could see it just like I can see you now
These beasts are running all over our camp now
Can you do something about it before they do something about us
we found out that the motor of the rail-tracked shutters is broken
My colleagues arranged the delivery of the missing part to our base
could you set up the weather station and get a canister of generator fuel as well
but we have to steady ourselves and act fast
Let us get to the impact site and take a look
there might even be aliens trying to contact us
I doubt they could withstand the high heat upon entering the atmosphere..
We discussed the situation and figured out a way to track our mysterious guest down
Let's set up several location finders around the impact site
They will pick up any and all unusual activity there
While analyzing the Arizonian cave expedition results
we kept finding notes on an “island settlement” of some kind
and now we see what the ancient writers were talking about
Let's join forces again and set out to make an initial assessment of the river delta and its surroundings
Judging by what we already know about these people
they probably lived in the caves or used them for safe travel
We can try finding them with the help of a seismic vibrator
There's a chance time hasn't been too gentle on the remains of that civilization..
Do you think we'll find any traces of an ancient civilization
Rare mineral deposits would be an equally desirable outcome
There is no info on this cave in any of our databases
so we'll be the first to set foot in there
Don't forget to bring your brand-new drone along
An old quarry near the observatory turned out to have an underground passage leading somewhere deeper into the caves
This tunnel could very well lead to a whole labyrinth of ancient halls and ruins
Let's find out what's hidden in there
The astronomers from the observatory have some ideas about that locked door
They also found another entrance to the cave
They are preoccupied with the meteor right now
but one of them has offered to return your favor and help us
Princess Leonore Lilian Maria christened at Stockholm's Drottningholm Palace Chapel on June 8
Princess Leonore’s christening took place at Stockholm's Drottningholm Palace Chapel on June 8th and all went according to plans. See the film on SVT Play here: http://tinyurl.com/m8llyer[Prinsessan Leonores Dop]
The baby wore a christening gown that was first worn by Prince Gustaf Adolf at his 1906 christening
It has also been worn by his siblings (Sigvard
and Carl Johan) as well as by Prince Gustaf Adolf and Princess Sibylla’s children
It was also worn by Crown Princess Victoria
At Princess Margaretha’s 1935 christening a cape and a cap in cream-colored silk satin were added
In the cape’s lining all the babies christened along with the dates for those christenings have been embroidered
The christening gown is made of cotton batiste and valencia lace (bobbin lace) with a petticoat of satin woven silk

bar and cafe set to open July 6 at 1301 Regent St
store owner Sam Brown and bookstore manager Molly Fish take a quick break from shelving new books at the soon-to-open bookstore and bar
Brown fell in love with the concept at Kramers
The place offered everything from morning coffee to evening cocktails
“It gives you a reason to be there at every hour of the day,” Brown said
He planned to open the new business in 2020
“I felt like the protagonist in a Philip Roth novel
being slowly crushed under the wheel of history
[Plot twist: How Madison's bookstores survived the pandemic and emerged stronger than ever]
“come hell or high water.” There’ll be a 16-seat bar
along with a menu of locally roasted coffee
curated with the help of bookstore manager Molly Fish
who read of Brown’s plans in the newspaper and left her job at Epic Systems to join the effort
She spent months working with Brown to curate a collection organized by country of origin
The two started with a list of every country in the world and have tried to get titles from every one
“We’ll have the poetry of Lord Byron while he was in Greece
next to children's books set in Greece,” Brown said
“It really paints a more diverse picture of the places that we are representing,” Fish said
explaining that the collection will include a lot of translated literature
“I think authors from a place can really describe a place best.”
Brown hopes it will be “a destination for armchair travelers,” supplementing travel by letting people learn more about a place they plan to visit
or even replacing travel for those who can’t
“I don't think there can ever be too many independent bookstores,” he said

we look back at the royal wedding of Princess Madeleine of Sweden and Chris O’Neill:
After a broken engagement a few years earlier
Princess Madeleine of Sweden finally found the love of her life after fleeing to New York City to heal her broken heart
she met American-British financier Christopher “Chris” O’Neill
They appeared for the first time in public together in January 2011
and the relationship might have stayed quiet for longer had a Spanish tourist not videoed their meeting at the Boathouse in Central Park on her mobile and sent it to the Swedish media
Their engagement was officially announced on 25 October 2012 after Chris had proposed earlier that month in New York after having asked her father’s permission while in Sweden
Chris requested to remain a private citizen and keep his dual American-British citizenship and work in the financial sector
It was announced in December that their wedding was scheduled for 8 June 2013 in the Royal Chapel of Stockholm Palace
There was tremendous media interest in the nuptials
with a live broadcast in all the Nordic countries
“I’m hoping for a beautiful day with beautiful weather
which is what probably all brides to be hope for
I would be so pleased if Stockholm can look its best.”
Madeleine wore a gown by Valentino and was escorted a little over halfway up the aisle by her father
Swedish tradition usually has the bride and groom walk in the chapel together
but Madeleine followed in her older sister
Victoria’s footsteps by having her father walk her partially down the aisle before meeting Chris to walk the rest of the way
The bridal attendants were Chloé and Anaïs Sommerlath (maternal cousins of the bride), Lillie von Horn, Countess Chiara Abensperg und Traun (groom’s niece), Jasper d’Abo (groom’s nephew) and Count Louis Cajetan Abensperg und Traun (groom’s nephew)
Chris’s best man was Cedric Notz
The wedding reception was held in Drottningholm Palace
Madeleine explained the choice for the reception
“The wedding dinner will be held at Drottningholm Palace
Drottningholm Palace means so much to me — it’s where I was born and grew up.”
She later told Svenska Dagbladet that she wished the speeches at her wedding reception from her father
and his sister had been aired on television because they were so emotional and sweet
Pictures later revealed the couple’s wedding cake which was made up of 700 macarons in the shape of a pyramid
Foreign royals in attendance included Crown Prince Frederik
Princess Marie and Prince Joachim of Denmark; the Princess of Monaco; the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh (then the Earl and Countess of Wessex); Crown Prince Haakon
Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Princess Märtha Louise (and then-husband Ari Behn) of Norway; and the Hereditary Grand Duke and Grand Duchess of Luxembourg
Chris did not receive a title or Swedish citizenship in accordance with his wishes to remain a private citizen
retained his dual American-British citizenship and has continued to work in the financial sector
it was announced that Madeleine was expecting their first child
the family was living in New York; Princess Leonore was born on 20 February 2014
was born a little over a year later in Stockholm on 15 June 2015
The family will relocate to Sweden from Florida this autumn
