A 19-year-old man was taken to hospital under police guard after allegedly attacking homes at Allambie Heights
NSW Police responded to multiple calls for assistance from residents at Roosevelt Avenue
attempting to break-in and had also assaulted a resident
and are understood to have been on scene within a few minutes
The man had allegedly broken the window of one home and was hitting the window of a second home
The man had sustained two deep lacerations to his right arm as a result of breaking the window and was bleeding profusely
When officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command arrived
but was tackled at the intersection with Allambie Road
Police called for the urgent assistance of NSW Ambulance
who arrived at Allambie Road to treat the man shortly after 10.30pm
Allambie Road was blocked while the allegedly drug affected man was being treated
He allegedly assaulted police and paramedics while he was being restrained
A NSW Ambulance Intensive Care crew was called to help stem the bleeding from his deep wounds and sedate the man so he could be safely taken to Northern Beaches Hospital with a police escort just after 11.00pm
It is believed the man was not known to the residents whose homes were allegedly attacked
and he may have come up Churchill Crescent from nearby bushland
residents were seen hosing down blood from their homes and yards
were observed conducting inquiries with the shaken residents of the affected properties
A NSW Police spokesperson confirmed the incident and that an investigation is underway
“About 10.15pm yesterday (Saturday 22 March 2025)
emergency services were called to Roosevelt Avenue
following reports a man had smashed the window of a home and was banging on the window of a second address
officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command located a 19-year-old man with a severe laceration to his arm
The man allegedly assaulted police and NSW Ambulance paramedics when he was arrested and given treatment
“Police have been told the man also allegedly assaulted a resident prior to their arrival
“He was taken to Northern Beaches Hospital in a stable condition
Inquiries are ongoing,” said the NSW Police spokesperson
NSW Police have advised the 19-year-old man remains in hospital and the matter remains under investigation
Editorial note: A previous statement from police that the man had been charged with assault and malicious damage was an error
they are investigating these matters and no charges have yet been laid

A bushfire that broke out at Allambie Heights is suspected to have been deliberately lit
Just before 1.30pm yesterday afternoon (Monday
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Forestville Station responded to a report of smoke coming from bushland near Madison Way
Speaking to the resident who called Triple Zero (000) to report the smoke
they were able to determine the fire was a few hundred metres into the Manly Dam catchment
south of the pipeline trail and midway between the Wakehurst Parkway and Allambie Road
Additional FRNSW crews were called from Dee Why and Manly
and the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) was also called
Forestville firefighters relocated along the pipeline trail closer to the fire
in an area initially estimated to be around 50m x 50m
Direct access to the fire was made very difficult by thick vegetation and as additional firefighters responded to the scene
a FRNSW aerial reconnaissance unit was called
access to a water supply in the immediate vicinity of the pipeline trail was restricted
compounding the difficulty accessing the fire
As firefighters gained a better understanding of the location and size of the fire
they set up containment lines along the pipeline trail to protect homes at Madison Way
and sent crews to set up fire protection lines to defend an aged care facility at Martin Luther Place
Firefighters also made their way down a walking track from the pipeline trail into the Manly Dam
making the alarming discovery that the fire was in fact multiple fires
apparently started in multiple locations along the trail
FRNSW Inspector Charles Begley confirmed that the nature of the fire was suspicious
and an investigation into how it started would be required
responding to the pipeline trail just after 3.00pm
canvassing with walkers and riders in the area as they commenced an investigation
They also observed video footage relayed directly from the FRNSW aerial unit
With a full contingent of firefighters at the fireground
including three FRNSW and five NSW RFS crews
They were able to establish containment of the fire
which by 4.00pm had merged into a single fire around two hectares (2ha) in size
The fire was mostly extinguished by 5.00pm
with property protection lines being withdrawn and FRNSW crews departing
RFS crews remained until just before 5.45pm
with Beacon Hill Rural Fire Brigade assigned fire patrol duty overnight in case there was a reignition
A spokesperson for NSW RFS confirmed that RFS fire investigators would be attending the scene of the fire to investigate the cause
A spokesperson for NSW Police also confirmed the suspicious nature of the fire
saying once the fireground was deemed safe
NSW Police would also undertake an investigation

A man who allegedly attacked homes and assaulted a resident at Allambie Heights last weekend has been charged for assaulting paramedics and police
The 19-year-old man was arrested after allegedly attacking homes at Roosevelt Avenue
NSW Police had responded to multiple calls for assistance from residents at Roosevelt Avenue and were told a man was screaming
the man allegedly assaulted police and paramedics who were attempting to treat his injuries and stem the severe bleeding
The man was taken to Northern Beaches Hospital with a police escort just after 11.00pm
where he was treated for his injuries and it is understood he underwent a mental health assessment
officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command continued their inquiries
The 19-year-old man remained in hospital until Tuesday (25 March)
he was taken in police custody to Chatswood Police Station where he was charged with a number of offences as a result of his alleged drug-fuelled rampage
He was then released on conditional bail to appear before Manly Local Court on Wednesday

firefighters were back for a planned burn at Allambie Heights
Eleven hectares (11ha) of bush at Allenby Park
10 September) in a controlled hazard reduction burn
The controlled burn was under the supervision of Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW)
with the assistance of the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) and Northern Beaches Council
While preparing for today’s planned activity, FRNSW Bush Fire Officer Mathew Mildwater (image below), who is an Allambie Heights local, was called in unexpectedly for yesterday’s surprise bushfire in the Manly Dam catchment near the pipeline trail
Senior Firefighter Mildwater said that the area burned in yesterday’s bushfire had been scheduled for a future hazard reduction
and while the fire had occurred in the middle of the planned area
Today’s hazard reduction went ahead as planned however
with around 40 firefighters from FRNSW and NSW RFS patrolling the fireground
They burned down the hill between Sanananda Avenue
Then they lit up at the bottom and burned back into the already burned area to reduce fuel loads built up over a number of wet years that had promoted undergrowth
While the primary intention of the hazard reduction was to establish a protective buffer zone for nearby properties
Senior Firefighter Mildwater said the secondary aim was to achieve an ecological benefit with bush regeneration
As the events of the previous day demonstrated
the risk of an uncontrolled fire in bush near homes could result in direct threat to wildlife
Officer Mildwater said that hazard reduction burns allow firefighters to choose favourable conditions
which is usually not the case when bushfires happen

Suspicious fire at Allambie Heights
Nov 26, 2024 | Education, Forest ward, Government
The builder of the new Forest High School at Allambie Heights has been fined by the EPA
The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) yesterday (Monday
25 November) announced it had fined the Forest High School contractor ADCO Constructions the maximum penalty of $30,000 for failing to control sediment flows into a creek feeding the Manly Dam catchment
Following heavy rains in June this year, community members raised concerns about sediment-laden stormwater flowing from the construction site for the new Forest High School at Allambie Road
concerns were raised about sediment flows into creeks feeding into Manly Dam and the impact on a prehistoric species of fish
EPA officers inspected the construction site on Saturday
sediment-laden water running from the premises
NSW EPA Executive Director of Operations Jason Gordon said sediment discharge could cause considerable harm to aquatic life and that ADCO Constructions had previously been warned of the need to improve sediment management at the site
“Curl Curl Creek is a highly diverse aquatic ecosystem that hosts a population of the 90-million-year-old climbing galaxias freshwater fish species
Water pollution incidents of this nature have the potential to jeopardise their delicate natural habitat
“Strict regulations around water pollution exist to safeguard the surrounding area
adequate onsite pollution controls were not in place at the construction site
We acknowledge concerns raised by the local community and are committed to ensuring the contractor and its employees are taking all appropriate actions to minimise the impact of their work in the unique Manly Dam region
“We have been inspecting the site since early 2024 and will maintain strong regulatory oversight to ensure all environment protection measures are being complied with and implemented as required,” said Mr Gordon
Wakehurst MP Michael Regan (image above) said the fine was an appropriate response to an ‘alarming’ breach by the builder
and called for the $30,000 fine to be reinvested into Manly Dam
“This type of fine is always bittersweet
It is good to see the EPA come down on a contractor for doing the wrong thing
Manly Dam is a jewel of the Northern Beaches
and I take any threat to its environmental values extremely seriously
“I have written to the NSW Environment Minister
advocating for the fined $30,000 to be reinvested into environmental protections and restoration projects at Manly Dam
It is only fair that the community affected by this pollution sees some tangible benefit from this penalty
“I welcome this fine because it sends a strong message to any contractors that there will be consequences for polluting
and action will be taken to ensure conditions are met
“The new school will be a construction site for at least another six months
ADCO must step up and implement measures to prevent further sediment run-off,” said Mr Regan
Co-Chair of the Manly Dam Advisory Committee and Northern Beaches Councillor Kristyn Glanville (image above) also welcomed the decision by the EPA to fine the contractor
“It’s a pleasing outcome for the local community and environment that the EPA has taken enforcement action in relation to this incident
“Too often environmental crimes take place with impunity
which does not reflect the potential seriousness of environmental harm caused by pollution incidents
“Enforcement action assists in impressing upon the need for building sites to ensure they are complying with stormwater management controls and foster a strong compliance culture
“The Council has called upon DPI Fisheries and the EPA to now look further at strategies to assist the recovery of the climbing galaxias
given its special significance to the area as the last known population of this prehistoric fish in the Sydney area,” said Cr Glanville
ADCO Constructions is contracted to build the new Forest High School at 189 Allambie Road
for School Infrastructure NSW (artist impression above)
The Northern Beaches Advocate attended the official sod turning ceremony of the $160m project on 06 December 2023
and ADCO Constructions said the company expected the new school to be complete by mid-2025
ADCO Constructions was issued an advisory letter from the EPA and asked to take action to improve sediment management at the site after the EPA received community reports of turbid water being discharged from the premises during heavy rainfall in January 2024
Potential water pollution incidents can be reported directly to the EPA’s Environment Line on 131 555

Volunteer firefighters had New Year’s ruined by deliberately lit fires at Manly Dam Reserve
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Dee Why Station and NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) crews from Beacon Hill
responded to a report of a red glow in bushland a few hundred metres from the Wakehurst Parkway
The fire had initially been spotted from the air by the PolAir helicopter
which had been conducting an aerial patrol for New Year’s Eve
firefighters from Dee Why Fire Station were unable to access the bushland area via a fire trail in their truck
but confirmed there was an active and apparently uncontrolled fire in the bush
the FRNSW crew stood down in favour of RFS crews better equipped to tackle a fire in the bush
Firefighters made their way into the reserve
locating a few hundred square metres of bush alight
Crews set to work putting in containment lines around the fire
becoming suspicious at what seemed to be multiple points of ignition
Their suspicions were confirmed when another fire
located several hundred metres from the first
was started some time shortly before 6.00am close to the pipeline trail
Fire conditions overnight were relatively benign
but flame heights were reaching up to 3m and firefighting conditions were difficult
with some areas of inaccessible terrain and water only available from their fire trucks and a water tanker
Additional relief RFS crews were brought in through the morning from Terrey Hills
and the second outbreak was brought under control and extinguished by 8.00am after burning up to an estimated 2ha of bush
The original fire was contained shortly before 7.30am
crews worked for several more hours until it was extinguished around 12.30pm
A fire investigator arrived on scene shortly after to look into the cause of the fires
NSW Rural Fire Service Inspector Ben Shepherd confirmed the cause of the fires was being investigated
“We have responded to a number of incidents recently in this location
and we are treating the cause of the fires as suspicious,” said Inspector Shepherd
A spokesperson for NSW Police confirmed the first sighting of the fire had come from the air via the PolAir helicopter
and although officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command had initially attended the scene
they would await the results of the RFS inquiry before a criminal investigation was opened
The area at the northern end of Manly Dam Reserve, in the vicinity of the pipeline trail between Allambie Road and the Wakehurst Parkway, has seen a spate of recent suspicious firelighting activity. The most serious incident was in September 2024 when another large fire was caused by multiple sources of ignition along bush tracks
There have been at least half a dozen fire calls to the area in only the last few months, with most fires being extinguished while relatively small. It is now almost certain a persistent firebug is targeting the area and local residents are urged to protect their property by reporting anyone suspicious in the area to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000

Allambie Heights Public School is confirmed to have asbestos found in mulch in the school playground
The asbestos mulch crisis has deepened with Allambie Heights Public School this morning (Saturday
17 February) confirmed to be one of four new locations contaminated with asbestos mulch
workers in hazmat suits and breathing gear were seen working in the central garden bed of a playground near the Roosevelt Avenue entrance of the public primary school
Since the discovery of asbestos found in mulch used in Sydney’s inner west for the new Rozelle Parklands last month
the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) launched a supply chain investigation into how the asbestos came to be in the mulch
The EPA identified that several schools had received deliveries of mulch from the same supplier
one of those schools being Allambie Heights Public School at Allambie Road
Following examination of mulch at the school
this morning confirmed a positive test result for asbestos
Allambie Heights Public School is now one of 32 locations the EPA has confirmed that asbestos contaminated mulch has been found
Allambie Heights is the second school to have been found with contaminated mulch
the other being Liverpool West Public School
Ten other NSW schools have been identified for asbestos testing
with only North Sydney Public School given the all-clear so far
None of the other ten schools are on the Northern Beaches
The Department of Education has also confirmed that a single piece of bonded asbestos has been found in a garden bed at Allambie Heights Public School
They said the garden bed had been cordoned off since yesterday morning (Friday
16 February) and that remediation work would begin as soon as possible
Hazmat workers observed at the primary school this morning were focused on the central garden bed
but other garden beds containing mulch also appeared to be cordoned off with tape within the school as a precaution
A specialist team from Fire and Rescue NSW were observed arriving at Allambie Heights Public School just before 11.30am this morning to consult with the hazmat team on remediation of the site
which is what has been found at the school
is low-risk and presents less danger to the public than friable asbestos which can be inhaled and cause the deadly disease mesothelioma
Wakehurst MP Michael Regan (image above) has received a briefing from NSW Minister for Environment Penny Sharpe on the finding and spoken with Allambie Heights Public School
He says that work over the weekend should remove the threat
“The Minister hosted a forum with all MPs and MLCs yesterday afternoon
The NSW Government to their credit is acting responsibly and quickly as the criminal investigation continues
“We must find out how this has happened across the State
And hats off to the local school community for the ‘no fuss’ and caring way they have dealt with this unfortunate incident
it will be removed by the end of the weekend,” said Mr Regan
NSW Department of Education Secretary Murat Dizdar confirmed that work should be completed over the weekend and Allambie Heights Public School will be open on Monday (19 February)
Visit the EPA website for more information about the ongoing investigation into asbestos in mulch and specific sites with confirmed detections

Eighteen fire crews and more than 50 firefighters battled an intense factory blaze at Allambie Heights
Just before 4.00am this morning (Wednesday
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Forestville Station responded to an automated fire alarm that had triggered at a factory building at Rodborough Road
With the commercial building set back a considerable distance from the street entrance
which is on the border with Frenchs Forest
the smoke issuing from the three-level factory building was not immediately visible from the roadway
On making their way to the industrial building
they could see large amounts of smoke coming from one of the ground floor factory units which was occupied by a furniture and electronics manufacturing business
FRNSW Forestville Station Officer (SO) Rory Fegan said the intensity of the fire forced firefighters in breathing apparatus back when they made initial entry to the building
SO Fegan immediately called in a ‘third alarm’ fire
requesting multiple additional fire crews to the scene
“I called a third alarm fire because of the amount of smoke that was there
There was heavy fire conditions and because it was such a tightly packed premise we had to dismantle all the equipment in there to get crews in to extinguish it
“It was a very difficult decision to attack the fire and create a cut off point for the fire to spread to the rest of the building
It’s basically a concrete bunker we go into
“It wasn’t until we opened the door we realised how hot it was
When we got there the fire had been burning for some time
We initially went through a door and were beaten back by the fire
“That’s when we made entry through the steel roller doors by cutting through (main image and below) to be able to get more crews in to attack the fire
We had four crews in breathing apparatus with lines of hose working in there for some time to bring it under control
We didn’t confirm extinguishment until about 8.00am
and even then we were working for another hour and a half,” said SO Fegan
Multiple additional FRNSW crews arrived on scene to support the fire attack
Three fire commanders also arrived on scene
along with a NSW Ambulance crew and NSW Ambulance Inspector to standby for firefighter protection
With the factory unit densely packed with flammable and potentially explosive materials
Station Officer Fegan was faced with a literal heat of the moment decision
whether to risk the safety of firefighters in the confined space
or abandon the rest of the factory complex and adjoining businesses to the fire
That can be a bit frightening because if one of them goes
“We had to quickly pull them out and make the decision if we were going to go in
We just had to open it up and go in hard with four crews to get it under control
“I’ve been doing this for over 20 years and I’m quite confident that if we didn’t go in hard
it would have broken through to the next fire compartment and gone upstairs
“That could have been quite catastrophic because you go from the contents of one fire compartment being destroyed to an entire building being destroyed
but it was the right one to make as it turned out,” said SO Fegan
Although the decision to attack the fire no doubt saved the rest of the factory complex
the interior of the ground floor factory unit affected was completely gutted
and the collapse of a mezzanine floor made extinguishing the fire more complicated and hazardous for firefighters
Active firefighting duties continued at the scene until just before 9.00am
after which attention turned to ensuring there was no risk of reignition
and further water damage to the premises was minimised
FRNSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said the small margin by which the factory building had been saved was a stark demonstration of the importance of automated fire alarms
“I know businesses sometimes wonder why those things are really important
This is why these systems are put in buildings and why they need to be maintained
“Without that early notification from the automatic fire alarm
The installed fire protection measures that businesses are required to have make a difference
“This is a good example of how it’s worked
because it was right down the back and out of the way
You wouldn’t have seen it from the street
if it wasn’t for the alarm activating
“This is an example of those inbuilt systems working
the automatic detection and fire suppression systems in commercial premises
There is an ongoing cost and ongoing maintenance
That notification can assist with minimising damage and saving lives,” warned Supt Dewberry
NSW Ambulance reported no injuries in the incident
FRNSW crews remained at the scene until just before 2.45pm to monitor for reignition
The Fire Investigation and Research Unit and NSW Police attended to conduct inquiries into the cause of the fire
Little more than two weeks after Allambie Heights had its house sale price broken
The sale of 62 Churchill Cres for $3.36 million was settled today, smashing the previous record of $3.05 million, set on January 12 with the sale of 30 Lyly Rd
It is only the third $3 million-plus sale for the northern beaches suburb
which was named the most popular in NSW for buyers last year
Realestate.com.au’s review of online real estate searches during 2020 showed Allambie Heights ranked NSW’s most in-demand suburb for buyers
The suburb is about 5km from two major beaches and has a median house price of about $1,777,500 – well above the Greater Sydney median of $1,015,000 but well below neighbouring suburbs like Manly ($3.11 million)
Curl Curl ($2,617,500) and North Balgowlah ($2.25 million)
The Churchill Cres sale was negotiated by Allambie Heights specialist Tim Cullen
He said there had been a lot of interest in the architect-designed
which has views over Manly Dam to South Head and Freshwater
In the end it was a north shore family who were looking for a large home where they could raise their family and have the room to run their small family business
He said when considered in the context of the surrounding suburbs
Allambie Heights represented excellent value
especially the inner west and the lower north shore
“It offers the beaches lifestyle without the price tag,” he said
“Over time more and more people are seeing this a suburb that is great for raising a family
“The blocks are large and many back onto Manly Dam Reserve or have big easterly or south-easterly views.”
House stock remains tight in Allambie Heights

Allambie Heights is traditionally a regular in the national top 10 list of most in-demand suburbs
Those suburbs featured on the list are the most heavily searched suburbs in the country on the realestate.com.au site
the northern beaches is even more dominant
The group’s chief economist Nerida Conisbee
said the entire northern beaches was highly sought after
“We are seeing a shift to premium suburbs as buyers really take advantage of cheaper prices in many locations,” she said
“What we’re seeing on the northern beaches is exactly that
Suburbs are seeing very high views per listing
which has helped support prices through the crash.”
Realestate.com.au chief economist Nerida Conisbee
she said the northern beaches was still very expensive compared to other parts of Sydney
as more affordable northern beaches locations
Allambie Heights and Narraweena are really seeing huge buyer demand,” Ms Conisbee said
who were married last year and are expecting their first child next month
have just bought their first house in Allambie Heights
The couple had no doubt about where they wanted to buy
It wasn’t hard to choose the suburb to settle in
in the same home she has occupied for some 60 years
“Allambie Heights was always top of our list,” Mr Kirwan said
the large blocks and the family atmosphere.”
The couple have bought the home with Mrs White
and plan to create a self-contained section of the house
“It works for her and it works for us and it was a no-brainer,” he said
Mr Kirwan said the suburb was definitely changing
as more young couples and families moved in to the older homes
while others are being knocked down to make way for new homes
It’s a change Mrs Hansen McLean has been watching for many years
Her home — which she and her late husband moved into in 1959 — is one of the few remaining original homes in Maroa Cres
it normally comes down and a new one is built,” she said
“I don’t take much notice of it — it is nice to see the families and the children around though.”
Mrs Hansen McLean is still leading a very active and busy life
it’s nice and quiet and easy to get to places,” she said
said he wasn’t surprised to see Allambie Heights top the list
“There is a great community atmosphere,” he said
“Older residents have been enjoying the tranquillity of the suburb for ages and now the young families have tuned in to what is on offer.”
Exceptional value for money and the availability of larger blocks from 550sqm to 1000sqm that people could add value to
“Being just back from the beach also has its advantage
of a slightly lower house median price hovering around $1.6 million,” he said
“Young families are the main buyers we see
Locals don’t seem to move very far or trade up or down in the same suburb.”
Mr Cullen said demand had started to increase recently in line with the return to buyer confidence
“I think we had around 7000 views of one property in one month on one website,” he said
which lead to strong bidding on auction day
It reminds me of the peak times when I had 104 families inspect one property in 30 minutes
Lower stock levels are probably also fuelling the big numbers.”

A fire at a derelict site at Allambie Heights has started under suspicious circumstances
Just before 4.30pm yesterday afternoon (Sunday
emergency services responded to a report of smoke coming from the former Cerebral Palsy Alliance buildings on the corner of Allambie Road and Aquatic Drive
The abandoned buildings sit on the site that will be used to relocate The Forest High School from its current location at Frenchs Forest
The disused buildings have become derelict
When firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Dee Why Station arrived
they noticed smoke coming from a two-storey building
saw that fires had been lit in multiple locations
Officers from Northern Beaches Police Area Command closed Allambie Road between Aquatic Drive and Sunlea Place and established an exclusion zone around the property
Although the fires had not firmly taken hold
firefighters declared a ‘second alarm’ fire to bring additional firefighting resources to the incident scene
They held concerns over potential asbestos contamination of the site and needed additional trucks to act as relay pumps for street hydrants a long distance from the building fire
Mosman and Lane Cove Stations attended the fire
along with the Duty Commander for Northern Sydney
Three crews of firefighters in breathing apparatus quickly located a total of five ignition points on the ground and first level of the structure
Using three hose lines relayed through multiple pumpers
they quickly put out the fires on the two levels
which had not caused any structural damage to the building at that point
Additional checks for fire spread were then conducted in the ceilings to ensure complete extinguishment by 5.30pm
Given the risk of asbestos contamination checking in ceilings
a decontamination zone was established for all crews exiting the building
A NSW Ambulance Special Operations Paramedic was on stand-by for firefighter safety but not required
At the conclusion of firefighting activity
all crews packaged their gear for further decontamination at their respective stations and the site was handed over to NSW Police just after 6.15pm
who will be conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire
the circumstances around the cause of the fire are highly suspicious and arson is a strong possibility

A mountain bike rider at Allambie Heights had to be resuscitated after a cardiac arrest
Just before 10.45am this morning (Thursday
emergency services received Triple Zero (000) calls reporting a mountain bike rider injured at the 19th Hole Trail
Emergency services responded to Cootamundra Drive
with the first crew of NSW Ambulance Intensive Care Paramedics at the head of the trail within three minutes
With the assistance of a member of the public
they immediately made their way approximately 400m along the trail to reach the injured rider by 10.50am
It is reported the man had been riding alone and was discovered by passers-by
They found a man in his 40s had fallen off his mountain bike on what a local rider described as a difficult section of the trail
coming off over the handlebars and landing heavily
The man is understood to have been wearing a helmet and protective gear
The man appeared to have suffered a traumatic arrest as a result of the fall
and at the time of arrival of the first paramedics
it is understood bystanders had been performing CPR on him for approximately 15 minutes
Additional emergency services teams arrived
including officers from Northern Beaches Police Area Command
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews from Dee Why and Narrabeen Stations

a NSW Ambulance Special Operations Paramedic and NSW Ambulance Inspector Alex Lim
A CareFlight Rescue Helicopter was also tasked to the scene
were escorted to the incident location by NSW Police
Thanks to the initial CPR efforts of the bystanders
when the medical and rescue teams reached the man
the man was carried from the trail with the assistance of firefighters and a FRNSW all-terrain stretcher
NSW Ambulance Inspector Alex Lim said the man was extremely fortunate to have been found by bystanders
who were able to perform CPR until the arrival of emergency services
“Bystanders came across a man who had fallen off his mountain bike and was in cardiac arrest
They called Triple Zero and commenced CPR until paramedics arrived
“Paramedics and an aeromedical team that attended via the CareFlight Helicopter continued CPR and administered medications
resulting in a return of spontaneous circulation
“This case was made difficult by the fact the man was located on a mountain bike trail
Paramedics worked alongside Fire and Rescue NSW to safely extricate the patient before taking him to Royal North Shore Hospital via a green light corridor
“We commend the bystanders who found this patient
called Triple Zero and began performing CPR
Early and effective chest compressions are key to increasing the chances of survival from a cardiac arrest,” said Inspector Lim
the man was loaded into a NSW Ambulance Intensive Care vehicle with the CareFlight medical team on board
NSW Police Highway Patrol vehicles then escorted the ambulance to Royal North Shore Hospital with the man in a serious condition
Update 10 November 2022: Since the original publication of this article (03 November)
we have been informed the mountain bike rider has passed away in hospital due to the extent of their injuries

A boy has been seriously burned and at least three other children injured in a fireworks incident at Allambie Heights
chaos erupted at the outdoor Christmas Carols event at Allambie Heights Oval
some of the fireworks hit the playground in the oval and one rocket went into an aged care facility next to the oval
Multiple witnesses described the scene as ‘total chaos’ as the crowd realised what was happening and ran
who was at the event with her 14-year-old son and an adult girlfriend
said the fireworks display was a few minutes in when things went terribly wrong
“I had just finished videoing some of the fireworks with my phone and as I was putting it away
I looked up and couldn’t process what I was seeing at first
There were fireworks coming into the crowd and a boy sitting right near me was hit
he was screaming and then everyone was screaming and running for their lives
The crowd was running away but the fireworks were kind of chasing them as they ran
He has a disability and I was scared if I moved he would not be able to find me and he would panic
it went pitch black because the lights were off on the oval
“Somebody got the park lights on and I could see a boy next to me who was badly injured
His parent were frantic and trying to get help
It was like a movie,” said Ms Jackson
Beacon Hill Rural Fire Brigade were immediately on scene
Finding the injured boy with a penetrating chest wound from a wayward firework
they provided first aid and called for the urgent attendance of NSW Ambulance and also requested NSW Police for crowd control
Multiple units from Northern Beaches Police Area Command (PAC) quickly arrived at the scene
along with Fire and Rescue NSW Forestville Station and two crews of NSW Ambulance Intensive Care Paramedics
the first of which was assessing and treating the injured 11-year-old boy within ten minutes
He was found to have sustained a full-thickness burn to the upper left side of his chest
He also had two other superficial burns to his left arm and leg
He was given intravenous pain relief and the NSW Toll Ambulance Rescue Helicopter was launched from Bankstown in case he needed urgent transfer to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead
With NSW Ambulance Inspector David Lambert arriving on scene
an assessment of the boy’s injuries was undertaken with a consultant doctor called at Royal North Shore Hospital
who said the boy could immediately be accepted there
the decision was taken to depart by road for Royal North Shore Hospital and the helicopter was called off
At least three other children were also injured at the event
An 8-year-old girl was treated for a fractured wrist
that is thought to have been sustained during the pandemonium and crowd crush as people fled from the fireworks
She was treated at the scene and taken by ambulance to Northern Beaches Hospital in a stable condition
A 12-year-old child assessed and treated by NSW Ambulance for a minor injury was released into their parent’s care and taken home
It is understood another 12-year-old child suffering minor burns to their face
was taken to Northern Beaches Hospital directly from Allambie Heights Oval by a family member
Beacon Hill Rural Fire Brigade provided fire protection while the remaining fireworks were rendered safe
Northern Beaches PAC Inspector Maree Keim was seen in command at the incident

Allambie Heights was very popular with families over the weekend
ALLAMBIE HEIGHTS is a popular suburb with families
There is a large well-regarded primary school
lots of opportunity to get into bush and house blocks are big
When this renovated house at 14 Maroa Cres was opened for public viewing over the weekend no fewer than 49 families turned up to inspect it

It will be nipping at the heels of the suburb record too

But the suburb of Allambie Heights retains a secluded feel
Some locals call the place the “best-kept secret on the Beaches”
“It’s close to the surf and it’s close to main roads that take you north and south
but it’s also tucked away,” says Lee Hilton
a retiree who moved to Allambie Heights 32 years ago
Significant green space encloses the suburb on all sides
creating a sort of “moat” of bushland that keeps the big city at bay
that ‘allambie’ is an Aboriginal word for ‘peaceful place’
Allambie Heights was one of countless ‘war veteran suburbs’ that were developed after World War II as a result of crown land releases
its residents felt loyalty to the suburb that had sprung up in the bush
“When my husband and I moved in 32 years ago
it was very much a place with multiple generations of the same family,” says Hilton: “You’d have mums and dads who’d attended the public school themselves now sending their own kids there.”
Hilton says Allambie Heights Public School
and the local shops are also clustered nearby
The public school’s growth in recent decades helps illustrate the changing demographics in Allambie Heights
“When my kids started at the school in the 1980s there were about 290 pupils – there are over 500 now,” says Hilton
According to Brian Mills, who built the Allambie Veterinary Clinic in Allambie Heights in 1984 with his wife
the suburb has become a robust favourite for young families searching for value on the Northern Beaches
“These days we have a lot of new families,” he says
“I think because the suburb a bit more affordable than other areas

Clarke & Humel agent Casey Faets concurs. “It’s definitely a value-for-money area that’s family friendly,” he says. “The typical block size is almost double what you get closer to the beach.”
He adds: “It’s also a tightly held suburb. Once people arrive, they don’t want to leave. People will say to me, ‘I’m never selling’.”
The combination of seclusion and geographical convenience has also begun to attract more-affluent buyers. “Allambie Heights used to be very public-service and trades-oriented but now it’s attracting new faces,” Hilton says. “We have executive types living here now – there are a lot more four-wheel-drives.”
Interest from multiple demographics means properties are selling briskly, despite a broader market downturn across the Northern Beaches region. “It’s very rare that a property will go past the auction date,” says Faets. “They’re generally sold beforehand or at the auction, which indicates there is plenty of buyer interest in the area.”
Some residents are concerned that the forthcoming Northern Beaches Hospital, which is due to open next year, will increase traffic from Manly through Allambie Heights. The hospital sits north-west of Allambie Heights, in Frenchs Forest.
But others say the tight-knit community feel of the place will endure even if through-traffic increases.
“Allambie Heights is a suburb where a lot of people know a lot of other people,” says Mills, the vet. “That’s not always easy to find in Sydney.”

A police car and a van were involved in a collision last night at Allambie Heights
a NSW Police vehicle being driven by two officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command was travelling at Allambie Road
when it was involved in a collision with a van near Monserra Road
were confirmed not to have sustained any injuries as a result of the collision by a NSW Police spokesperson
The male driver and sole occupant of the white 2007 Mitsubishi Express van was not as fortunate
trapped in his vehicle by the force of the collision against the steering wheel
Allambie Heights resident Paul McDonald rushed from his home to offer assistance to the drivers of both vehicles
telling Nine News and the Northern Beaches Advocate what he saw (video below)
Mr McDonald said that the van driver’s mobile phone had dialled Triple Zero (000) automatically as a result of the collision
and he spoke with the emergency services operator to confirm the man’s condition
Mr McDonald then called the man’s wife to inform her of the collision
and she quickly made her way to the incident scene
It is understood the man was on his way to the shops to buy medicine for his sick children
Mr McDonald also offered praise for the professional conduct of the two badly shaken police officers
he said they had got out of their damaged vehicle and began assisting with the incident scene
Specialist rescue firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW Dee Why and Narrabeen Stations responded to the scene
assisting to cut the male driver free of the van
He was released from the van just before 8.15pm
and taken to a waiting NSW Ambulance where he was assessed by three crews
including Intensive Care Paramedics and NSW Ambulance Inspector Carolyn Parish
They treated the driver for injuries to his head
given the force of the impact and his confinement in the van
they took him under trauma protocols to Royal North Shore Hospital just after 8.30pm
Allambie Road was blocked in both directions for around 90 minutes as a result of the collision
Both vehicles were towed and a minor oil spill and debris on the roadway was cleaned up by 9.00pm
senior officers were observed at the incident scene
and a NSW Police spokesperson confirmed that inquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the collision
Demand has been cooling in hinterland suburbs of the northern beaches
They’re the suburbs where Sydney’s housing boom has begun to fizzle out and once rampant growth in prices has been replaced by sluggish sales and growing hesitation from buyers
Analysis of recent sales data showed the housing market as a whole was still relatively strong
but there were growing spots of weakness – especially in markets with runaway growth in prices last year
Suburbs where the slowdown was most apparent were spread mostly across the northern beaches
the realestate.com.au price movements data showed

where once meteoric growth has petered out over the last three months
Other suburbs where buyer demand was falling
measured by the number of views listings were generating on realestate.com.au
Many of these suburbs had led the explosion in prices last year
but buyers’ eagerness to snap up homes has since given way to a fear of overpaying and mounting concern about rising rates
Massive price rises last year also appeared to have priced many buyers out of the market and some were seeing more value in buying elsewhere or simply renting
Experts said this growing weakness meant these markets would be more susceptible to minor price drops later this year
but they cautioned any drop in the market would likely be gradual
Auction clearance rates remain higher but bidder numbers are dropping
Realestate.com.au director of economic research Cameron Kusher said part of the slowdown was because many of the most eager home seekers
“A lot of the people who were going to make a move have probably already done that
Interest rates rises and rising living costs were also creating a climate of increased caution
“Fewer people will want to be borrowing up to their max like they were last year,” Mr Kusher said
“We may also see more people spending their money on things they couldn’t over the past two years because of (the pandemic)
Last year people could afford to dedicate more income to housing.”
Analyst Cameron Kusher said the market was still strong
Former Real Estate Institute of NSW president and Cunninghams Real Estate founder John Cunningham said it was clear the northern beaches market was starting to “plateau”
“Prices are not falling but there is not the same urgency as last year,” he said
“Bidder numbers at auction are dropping and the number of buyers inspecting homes is lower.”
He added that these conditions varied by property category
are still selling very well,” Mr Cunningham said
“It’s the B-grade and C-grade houses that are staying on the market much longer and no longer getting those big prices … last year
Mortgage Choice Dee Why principal James Algar said fewer buyers were rushing to get their pre-approval for a loan because they had more homes to choose from
“Last year they would need pre-approval in a hurry
There’d be one property up for sale in the area and it would be going to auction soon
Most buyers will have a few properties they’re interested in,” Mr Algar said

The $112m relocation of The Forest High School has been given the final green light to proceed
The final decision to approve the relocation of The Forest High School (main image) from its current location next to Northern Beaches Hospital at Frenchs Forest to a site at Allambie Road
was made yesterday (23 November) by NSW Department of Planning Executive Director Erica van den Honert under delegation of the NSW Minister for Planning Paul Scully
The decision brings to an end a years’ long process that will see the current site of the co-educational secondary school (image above) at 135 Frenchs Forest Road, Frenchs Forest, vacated for a new Frenchs Forest town centre next to the Northern Beaches Hospital
the new town centre will be rezoned to accommodate a mix of uses
with building heights of up to twelve storeys
The new location of The Forest High School will be at the corner of Aquatic Drive and Allambie Road, Allambie Heights. The 4.5ha site formerly housed the remnants of the Country Children’s Hostel, known as McLeod House. The structure was abandoned, repeatedly vandalised and damaged by multiple fires over a number of years (image below)
Construction hoarding has been erected at the new site
it is expected work on the new school will commence
The cost of the development of the new school is slated at $112.5m
supporting an estimated 163 jobs during the construction period
the new school will take approximately 20 months to build
it will accommodate almost double the number of students to 1,500 enrolments
There will also be a fifty percent increase in staff from 80 to 120
A number of objections were raised to the relocation
which were largely dismissed as a result of the decision
“The project is permissible with development consent
and is consistent with NSW Government policies including:
“The impacts on the community and the environment can be appropriately minimised
in accordance with applicable NSW Government policies and standards
Conditions of consent are recommended to address key impacts associated with traffic
“Engagement on the project is considered to be in line with Undertaking Engagement Guidelines for State Significant Projects
including the community participation objectives outlined in these guidelines; and weighing all relevant considerations
the project is in the public interest,” wrote NSW Department of Planning Executive Director Erica van den Honert in giving reasons for the approval
The plans for the new school are laid out in the supporting documentation
The majority of the school buildings will be at the eastern end of the site
with a playing field in the centre and games courts at the western end
In a concession to tree canopy concerns of objectors
such as the Save Manly Dam Catchment Committee
efforts will be made to retain some of the vegetation currently at the western end of the site
Six significant trees in the rest of the site have been identified for removal by the plans
Parking for 121 vehicles will be available in an underground car park that will go beneath the playing fields
with no availability for any student parking on site
Construction has been permitted between 7.00am — 6.00pm Monday to Friday
No building works will be permitted on Sunday
the school will operate normal school hours of 8.30am — 3.00pm weekdays
with after hours and weekend community use of sporting facilities permitted
Member for Wakehurst Michael Regan has expressed his satisfaction that the planning process has now concluded and that construction of the new school will commence
“I’m glad to see the relocation project move to the next stage
It ends the uncertainty and unlocks the opportunity for a new town centre at Frenchs Forest
“It will also deliver new and improved facilities for students in The Forest area
bringing the school up to a 21st century standard,” said Mr Regan
$49.1m has been allocated towards the expected $112.5m cost in this year’s NSW Budget
Preparatory work at the site appears to be underway
and the Department of Education anticipates ‘full operation’ of the new site in 2025
it seems unlikely the school will be ready for the commencement of the 2025 school year

An 11-year-old boy who was struck by an out of control firework at a Christmas Carol event in Sydney has been left with an 'open crater in his chest'.
Emma Carrera's son Elias Carrera was among nine people injured at Allambie Heights Oval on the Northern Beaches on Sunday night when a fireworks display went wrong.
The boy was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital before being transferred to The Children's Hospital at Westmead to undergo surgery for severe burns and a chest injury.
In a post shared to social media on Monday, Ms Carrera updated the local community after the 'traumatic' night, saying her son had a 'large open crater in his chest'.
'We are out [of surgery] and recovering,' she said.
'Not as straightforward as they'd hoped with the firework going in further than first thought.'
The firework pierced Elias' skin at a downwards angle, reaching his spleen and tearing his abdominal muscles.
The 11-year-old has been left with a partially open wound with plans to close it once it is safe to undergo a second surgery.
'Looks like the burns unit will be home for this week and just so grateful it wasn't worse – thank you all again for the incredible support – we are truly humbled,' she said.
'Hug those loved ones a wee bit tighter tonight.'
Ms Carrera said she was still in shock from the horrifying experience, which terrified her son.
'It's all a massive blur and it's going to take some time to get the images of terror on his little face from my memory,' she said. 'It was traumatic.'
'He was amazingly brave. We are beyond proud of him. The paramedics were outstanding.'
The young boy had reportedly expressed concern for the other people injured during the event.
'He hopes the other children injured are OK – if anyone can let us know if they are all OK below that would be great,' Ms Carrera said.
Horrifying footage taken at the scene shows the glittering display light up the sky as the crowds watched on from below before an out-of-control firework fell from the sky.
