Picture suppliedAllawah and Carlton residents say they are fed up with constantly overflowing bins that are making the streets resemble a garbage tip
they say the problem started after Georges River Council gave them "no warning" that bin collection days would change
followed the council's processes and booked missed collections
expecting their rubbish to be picked up the next day
Residents say it's been one week since bins were collected
Allawah resident Brett Thomas said the situation has become difficult to tolerate
"Our streets have become disgusting," he said
Residents met with labor councillor for Kogarah Bay Ward
who was recently elected to represent the concerns of this community to the council
"This fiasco is yet another example of the failures of privatising essential council services like garbage collection to private contractors instead of investing in reliable
publicly managed waste collection," he said
a spokesperson for Georges River Council said it extensively promoted the new bin collection day changes that commenced March 2
with information on its website about the coming changes since December 17 last year
"This has included a new bin collection day website search
She said residents were informed about the changes in several ways
For residents whose bins belong to a multi-unit dwelling
she said specific communication was undertaken by the council with strata managers to notify them of the bin collection day changes
The spokesperson said this was communicated via email in January and February
"Any multi-unit dwellings without contact details on file with the council (the minority) received letters in letterboxes (mailed and hand-delivered) on February 12 and 19," she said
"Council communicated directly with strata managers/secretary as these site contacts coordinate the majority of waste services at a site on behalf of residents
such as for the Bulky Waste Collection Service and the Wheel Out Wheel Back Service
"For any issues regarding the Wheel Out Wheel Back Service
a site contact can report the matter directly to the Waste Hotline on 1800 079 390 - this will ensure Veolia staff are redirected to the property to return bins to the confines of private property correctly
available on council's website (search for units bins)
The spokesperson said residents in single-unit dwellings were also notified in January and February via a letterbox drop and a sticker on the general waste bin confirming the new bin collection day

Police launch investigation as Chris Minns condemns ‘monstrous
Nazi swastikas have been scrawled across a Sydney synagogue in another episode of antisemitism
The attack on the Southern Sydney Synagogue

“It’s a monstrous act,” Minns told reporters on Friday

Police launched an investigation into the offensive graffiti
which they believed occurred between 3.55am and 4.30am on Friday
It followed other antisemitic attacks across Sydney in recent months, including Monday’s vandalism of a car in the city’s east
In December, the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne was destroyed by arson in an attack condemned by Albanese and other leaders. Those responsible were still at large.

Minns underlined his local community’s love for the Southern Sydney Synagogue and said he had spoken with its president on Friday morning
The president was appalled by the graffiti but understood it did not represent the community
“The painting of a swastika on a Jewish building shows you everything you need to know about how appalling these particular individuals are and what their ultimate aim is,” Minns said
Jewish leaders called for the swift arrest of those “defacing houses of worship with the symbol of genocide”
NSW Jewish Board of Deputies president David Ossip said: “No Australian should have to wake up every morning filled with apprehension about whether or not there’s been another antisemitic hate crime overnight.”
The board of deputies reiterated its call for hate speech and incitement to violence laws to be tightened to ensure such conduct was not normalised.
A review sparked by similar calls in 2024 found several unintended consequences could flow from expanding incitement laws.

A southern Sydney synagogue has been vandalised overnight
with swastikas spray painted on the outside of the building
The phase “Hitler on top” was also painted in red next to the entrance of the synagogue
The perpetrators were filmed on CCTV wearing hoodies and masks
Police officers discovered at the graffiti while on patrol at 4:30am
with NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna warning the culprits that they will be caught
“Those people wanting to do this sort of thing we say to you
you will get prosecuted and you will be put before the courts.”

The crime is punishable by up to 12 months in jail and/or an $11,000 fine
The incident comes days after a car was vandalised with the phrase “f*ck the Jews” in Sydney’s east
The synagogue is located in Chris Minns’ electorate of Kogarah
and the premier condemned the act as “monstrous.”
“I think that the painting of a swastika on a Jewish building shows you everything you need to know about how appalling these particular individuals are and what their ultimate aim when it comes to members of the Jewish community,” he said
“It’s around the corner from my house
and I know that the people that I represent and the community that I live in completely repudiate that kind of horrifying vandalism
that horrifying violence in our community.”
President of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies David Ossip said that Australians should not become desensitised to these acts
“It is not normal or acceptable that Australians are having to wake every morning filled with apprehension about whether or not there has been another anti-Semitic hate crime overnight,” he said
President of the synagogue George Foster told the Daily Telegraph that he received a call from police in the early morning
“It is deeply distressing but it’s almost inevitable given the background on the rise of anti-Semitism currently,” he said
“My parents were holocaust survivors and this has echoes of Germany 1933 with people singling out Jewish shops
religious institutions and homes by painting them with antisemitic signs
It’s unbelievable this happening in Australia.”

A Synagogue in Sydney has been spray-painted with at least a dozen Swastikas in the latest anti-semitic attack to afflict the city
The Southern Sydney Synagogue in the suburb of Allawah was the latest target of anti-semitic vandals who daubed a large red Swastika sign at the entrance to the place of worship alongside the words 'Hitler on top'
Two men in dark clothing and wearing masks were reportedly seen loitering around the synagogue in the early hours of the morning
President of the Jewish Board of Deputies David Ossip told Daily Mail Australia 'enough is enough'
'It isn’t normal or acceptable that Australians are having to wake up every morning filled with apprehension about whether or not there’s been another antisemitic hate crime overnight,' MR Ossip said
'This illegal behaviour is reprehensible and undermines the social harmony and cohesion which we all treasure
'We cannot allow ourselves to become desensitised to acts of Jew-hatred and allow illegal conduct such as this to become normalised
'The alleged offenders must be swiftly identified and prosecuted and receive penalties sufficient to ensure that such conduct is deterred and not normalised.'

said that he had received a call from police at 4.30am that they had driven by and seen the place of worship had been attacked
'Looking at the CCTV it seems there were two men in black hoodies and masks who were spraying the walls of the synagogue,' Mr Foster told The Daily Telegraph.
Executive Council of Australian Jewry co-chief executive Alex Ryvchin called on the alleged offenders to 'face the full force of the law'.
'As long as these people evade justice for trying to terrorise Australian citizens, it will continue,' Mr Ryvchin added.
'We’re also calling on our fellow Australians, particularly those in positions of influence across society, to end the silence and publicly denounce this behaviour as repugnant to our national values and a threat to us all.'
Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chair of the Anti-Defamation Commission, branded the alleged crime 'unforgivable outrage that should make every Australian’s blood boil'.
'To defile a synagogue—a place of worship, hope, and sanctuary—with the ultimate emblem of genocide and evil is nothing short of an attack on the very heart of our nation,' he said.

The Allawah Dancing Group is one of many community groups who have used the park which is a rare piece of open space in the heart of Hurstville
Since parts of Kempt Field were closed to the public in December
2022 for remediation after it started to subside the 60 members of the dancing group have continued to meet regularly to exercise in the car park adjacent to the park
The 3.173 hectare Kempt Field site is on the eastern edge of the Hurstville city centre
It was previously a brickworks and was filled to become a reserve around 1977
It is NSW Government-owned and has been under the care
control and management of Council for more than 40 years
The park is currently undergoing an $11.8million restoration by the NSW Government with works expected to take about 15 months
While the Allawah Dancing Group welcomes the progress
they hope there will be space for their activities in its future design
"Our dance team is spontaneously formed by nearby residents and has been active in the park for over ten years
and it has become an indispensable part of our daily lives," she said
"After the area was closed in December 2022
She came on-site many times and actively urged the State government to resolve the issue as soon as possible and kept us updated on the progress
"After nearly two years of tireless effort
we finally see positive results and we sincerely thank Councillor Liu for her hard work and dedication
we are more concerned about its further development
We hope this space will meet the needs of different groups and become a public area that everyone can use."
Deputy Mayor Liu has called on the State Government authority to provide the following details of the Kempt Field Park site including:
(i) the Action Plan of the Remediation Project;
the Landscape Plan to increase future community amenity of the site
Cr Liu said green open space is urgently needed in the Hurstville CBD
In 2022 she called for a council report on land under the control of the state government including the extensive land holdings of Transport for NSW along Forest Road that could be converted to a linear park
"The council and the NSW government authority must work together to achieve the best outcome of Kempt Field," Cr Lui said
A Georges River Council spokesperson said that a current Plan of Management and Master Plan
endorsed by the Department of Planning and Environment in April 2018
"However the current remediation project and subsequent Long Term Environmental Management Plan will determine the relevance of these documents," the council spokesperson said
"Council continues to work with the Department of Planning
Housing and Infrastructure to understand the future use and management of the site."
A spokesperson for the Office of Strategic Lands in the Department of Planning
Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI) said Kempt Field is classified as "community land" under the Local Government Act 1993 and must be used and managed in accordance with the Plan of Management
"The NSW Government expects Kempt Field to continue to be freely available to the community as a recreational area," the spokesperson said
"The existing Plan of Management for Kempt Field was prepared and adopted by Georges River Council in 2017
Council will be responsible for determining the future recreational uses of Kempt Field and whether the existing Plan of Management is fit for purpose
is required to provide consent to any amendment or variation to the existing Plan of Management prepared by Council."

Southern Sydney Synagogue in Allawah spraypainted with swastikas

Nazi swastikas were spray-painted on a synagogue in southern Sydney, sparking outrage from Australia’s Jewish community
The Southern Sydney Synagogue in Allawah was daubed in anti-Jewish graffiti on Friday in an incident that political leaders labelled horrific and hate-filled
New South Wales premier Chris Minns condemned the attack as hateful and divisive while prime minister Anthony Albanese urged for strict legal action
emphasising the importance of inclusivity in Australia’s multicultural society
“It’s disgusting and disgraceful,” Mr Minns said
He said there were people “out there that are determined to rip into our community and they should be ashamed of the actions that they’ve taken this morning”
Mr Albanese said such crimes should be “called out for what they are”
“They are hateful and have no place in Australia,” he said
“Australians should respect each other and overwhelmingly do
we need to be inclusive and cohesive and that’s what my government is determined to support.”
In a separate incident on Monday, a car in Queens Park, home to some members of Sydney’s Jewish community, was defaced with antisemitic words.
David Ossip, head of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, said: “No Australian should have to wake up every morning filled with apprehension about whether or not there’s been another anti-Semitic hate crime overnight.”
In early December, antisemitic slogans were scrawled on buildings and footpaths in Woollahra and an advertising board in Sefton, a western Sydney suburb, was defaced.
Alex Ryvchin, co-chief of the executive council of Australian Jewry, wrote on X: “As long as these people evade justice for trying to terrorise Australian citizens, it will continue.”
“We’re also calling on our fellow Australians, particularly those in positions of influence across society, to end the silence and publicly denounce this behaviour as repugnant to our national values and a threat to us all.”

The Mount Crosby Weir Bridge will be closed to all traffic from 16 February 2024
as final works commence to connect the Mount Crosby New Vehicle Bridge to Allawah Road West and East
This closure marks the start of the final phase of the new vehicle bridge construction and includes earthworks and asphalting the new bridge tie-ins with Allawah Road East and West
and installing new streetlights and signage
The works are expected to take around six weeks and
the new two-lane vehicle bridge will open to traffic
The weir bridge will remain closed for repair and maintenance works
and open to pedestrians and bike riders at a later date
The alternate route during this closure is via Colleges Crossing on Mount Crosby Road
The project team is aware that during low-level flooding at Colleges Crossing
the Mount Crosby Weir Bridge becomes an access point for the community
If there is a wet weather event or an emergency during the closure period and Colleges Crossing becomes unavailable
the weir bridge can reopen to traffic at short notice.
This work may need to be paused and/or rescheduled in the event of bad weather
Every effort will be made to minimise impacts on the local community and environment while this work is undertaken

"We encourage any witnesses to come forward to NSW police through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or through Triple Zero (000)," NSW Premier Chris Minns said
"Our message is clear - these acts designed to intimidate and divide will not work," he said
"These people are determined to divide our community in two
We will always call out these acts for what they are - monstrous and appalling
"The NSW government will continue to strengthen the laws protecting people's right to worship safely as well as ensuring NSW Police have the resources they need to catch the people who commit these bastardly acts
we'll be introducing legislation that protects religious institutions and places of worship to prevent attempts to intimidate or stop religious people from practicing their faith," he said
president of the Southern Sydney Synagogue and president of the Australian Association of Jewish Holocaust Survivors and their Descendants was alerted by police around 3am on January 10 after they discovered the vandalism during their regular patrol
CCTV footage shows two men in black hoodies and masks fleeing the scene
The synagogue on the corner of Railway Parade and Nobel Street
is in the electorate of NSW Premier Chris Minns who also visited the site this morning
Dr Foster said he felt shock and distress when he saw the graffiti
"Being the child of holocaust survivors it brought back images going back to 1933 when Jewish businesses and Jewish institutions were graffitied," Dr Foster said
"We were firebombed in 1991 and there was some graffiti in 2002 however that was not to the extent of this graffiti
"Since 1991 I have had to pray in a building with bars on the windows and CCTV and this is in Australia."
Dr Foster said his community would be increasingly anxious
I am certain it will not affect our day-to-day activities
We shall continue with our services," he said
Asked whether he had a message for the perpetrators of the attack
"Because of the sort of people who do this I feel fairly certain they won't listen to any message that I've got
The important message is that this is what racism can lead to
This is the sort of thing that happens if you let racism and antisemitism go unchecked
"Our aim is that they are not going to beat us
NSW Premier Chris Minns described the attack as a monstrous act
"It's a horrifying and hate-filled attack by individuals that have got hate in their hearts
that are determined to divide our community in two," Mr Minns said
"I think that the painting of a swastika on a Jewish building shows you everything you need to know about how appalling these particular individuals are and what their ultimate aim is when it comes to members of the Jewish community
It's around the corner from my house and I know that there are people who I represent and the community that I live in completely repudiate that kind of horrifying vandalism," he said
Oatley MP and Shadow Minister for Multiculturalism
Mark Coure said he was utterly disgusted to learn that the Southern Sydney Synagogue has been defaced in a disgusting anti-Semitic attack
"This vile act of antisemitism is an attack not only on our local Jewish community but on the values of respect
and unity that we as a society stand for," Mr Coure said
"I call on the authorities to act swiftly to investigate this crime and ensure that the individuals responsible are brought to justice
and we must show solidarity with our Jewish neighbours to ensure they feel safe and supported
"Let this serve as a reminder that we all have a role to play in stamping out all forms of racism and bigotry
and this attack is yet another direct assault on our Jewish community and what we stand for as a nation
This isn't just vandalism - it's an attack designed to instil fear and terror
"Every effort must be made by police to catch the criminals responsible and to stop the attacks and by the justice system to impose harsh penalties on the perpetrators."
The park will be closed to the public from Monday
The field is being remediated following the the discovery of subsidence and contamination issues
is undergoing an extensive $11.8 million remediation led by the NSW Department of Planning
and Infrastructure to ensure it is safe for future public use
The project is expected to take up to 15 months
dozens of surrounding residents who regularly visit the park gathered for a farewell party with their pet dogs
expressing their love for the park and their hopes for the success of the remediation project
Residents took the opportunity to discuss aspects of the project and their concerns for the future with Georges River Council candidate Ben Wang
as they now face difficulties walking their dogs," Mr Wang said
"The other parks for dogs are too far away and too small," a resident said
"I may have to walk my dog on the street," said another
Mr Wang says most residents remain optimistic
to see the start of remediation work after years of uncertainty
One of the organisers of the gathering and a resident who lives in the apartment block next to the park says residents are keen to provide feedback about the project
Their concerns include if the project will be completed on time and within budget
and they suggested improvements to include a dog park with separate areas for small and large dogs
enhanced lighting near the railway line for greater safety
repair of the walking track at Roberts Lane
and facilities for young people including a half-court basketball area and soccer fields with small posts
"Residents want more green space," Mr Wang said
they want to be actively involved and kept informed during the planning process
they have a unique understanding of its needs and potential."
Mr Wang said he reassured residents that a Plan of Management for Kempt Field was established in 2018 but given the scope of the remediation works
he acknowledged that some aspects of the plan may need revision
He said he would share the 2018 document with residents for their reference and to collect their feedback
Regular updates on Kempt Field are available on the council's website.

Pacific Link Housing (PLH) and Women’s Community Shelters (WCS)
purchased in 2021 by local developer BEA Projects
has been made available to PLH and WCS via local social enterprise real estate agency Key2 Realty
for the purpose of providing affordable housing to older women at risk of homelessness
Minister for Women’s Safety and the Prevention of Domestic and Sexual Violence
said the vacant site had been given a new lease of life
this site has been transformed into a new facility that will provide wrap-around support for women aged 55 and older who are escaping domestic and family violence or who are at risk of homelessness,” Ward said
said the facility will provide transitional accommodation for women for up to 36 months while more permanent housing was being secured for the occupants
“This initiative is a great example of how unused private buildings can be put to good use to benefit vulnerable people at risk of homelessness and provide DFV escapees with a safe place to heal as they begin to rebuild their lives,” Maclaren-Jones said
The NSW Government provided $300,000 to develop the facility as part of the Domestic and Family Violence National Partnership Agreement 2021-23
Spearheaded by the Sydney based Women’s Community Shelters (WCS)
the partnership agreement allows for the premises to be used as a women’s shelter for up to three years
said there is a high number of older women experiencing homelessness and at risk of homelessness in NSW
“Affordable and stable housing is important to help women re-establish their lives post violence
“Through this partnership additional housing is being supplied
“WCS will also provide residents with case management support and coordinate community engagement and wellbeing activities as well on-site support services.”
said his organisation was proud to partner with like-minded organisations willing to take an innovative approach to support women escaping domestic and family violence
the first group of new tenants are readying to move in,” he said
“Each tenant will receive a refurbished studio apartment and the site has also been fitted out with communal lounges
Lynch said the last Census revealed that the number of older women experiencing homelessness increased by 31 per cent between 2011 and 2016
“According to Housing for the Aged Action Group (HAAG)
those captured in Census and Specialist Homelessness Services (SHS) data represent the tip of the iceberg
with an estimated 110,000 women over 45 years of age at risk of homelessness in NSW alone,” he said
“These figures demonstrate the critical need for greater investment in social and affordable housing and targeted approaches to support older women
“Allawah House is an example of ‘meanwhile use’; an innovative housing model that utilises vacant property that may be earmarked for future redevelopment
for the purpose of providing a social benefit.”
WCS will provide residents with case management support and coordinate community engagement and wellbeing activities
while PLH will take responsibility for property and tenancy management
PLH will also provide assistance to identify long term affordable housing pathways for Allawah House residents coming out of the transitional housing arrangement throughout the program
A tradesman is in a critical condition in hospital after his cherry picker toppled sending him plunging four storeys onto a concrete driveway
Emergency crews were called to the unit block at Allawah in Sydney's south at about 12.30pm on Sunday after witnesses heard the metal basket crash into the pavement
NSW Ambulance acting Inspector Andrew Bibby said the man was painting eves on the building's roof when the cherry picker became unstable causing him to lean.
The maintenance worker, 32, was placed in an induced coma by paramedics and rushed to St George Hospital for treatment where his condition is understood to have stablised.
Trained lifesaver Andrew Collington heard the crash, called triple zero and attended to the man while paramedics arrived.
'He wasn't conscious, but he was clearly trying to move a little,' Mr Collington told reporters at the scene.
'It was a really loud bang ... the basket had fallen a long way and crashed onto the ground with the guy inside it.'
The scene has been cordoned off by police who are investigating along with SafeWork NSW.

the Allawah Hotel in the city’s south west
has been snapped up by a private equity group believed to be White & Partners in a deal worth about $30 million
The pub was sold by parties associated with JDA Hotels
which has kept an ownership stake and will continue to run it under a management agreement
Records show the pub sits on a 1274-square-metre corner site adjacent Allawah station
The sale is just the latest bullish hotel deal in Sydney as the sector enjoys a boom
Ray White Group Asia Pacific director of hotels Andrew Jolliffe said managing the sale required a different approach
“This is…a very strong A-grade gaming hotel sale,” he said in a statement
Mr Joliffe said he was confident the pub sector would continue to boom
The sale of the Allawah marked the 25th A-grade freehold hotel sold in Sydney in the past 18 months
founder John Feros said that the private equity style deal structure was something his group had done in the past and would likely look to participate in again
“We had owned the Allawah Hotel for over a decade and decided the time was right to recalibrate the capital stack,” Mr Feros said in a statement
“Whilst not a traditional exit event for the hotel space
we were confident we could find a deal structure that works”
The pub sits on a 1,274 square metre corner site adjacent Allawah Train Station
The multi-storey Allawah Hotel is ranked 140 in the state’s latest top-200 gaming rankings
The off-market sale follows a string of high-profile hotels sold including six hotels in six months from Australian Pub Fund
Also this year the combined sale of Hunters Hill and Tiger Bar pubs netted Iris Capital and Gallagher Hotel Management $65 million and in June hotelier Simon Tilley bought the Greenwood pub lease for more than $10 million

Demolition of the dilapidated Currong buildings had been expected to begin in August or September this year but substantial works were delayed and demolition of the eight-storey former student housing is currently under way
The buildings - considered to be Canberra's first medium and high density public housing
were designed for share houses and for married couples by principal architect Richard Ure for the Department of Works
The development saw significant numbers of public servants move from communal hostels to private dwellings for the first time
Despite foundation rents of £4 and 7 shillings per week
the buildings quickly attracted long waiting lists
eight-story blocks and included 184 one bedroom and 28 two bedroom flats
Currong stood as Canberra's tallest buildings until the 1970s and were considered luxurious with small kitchens and bathrooms
Currong was decommissioned and unsuccessfully offered for sale in 2008
Housing tenants will be moved from the Allawah Court buildings in 2016 and 2017
The government expects planning approval for new developments to be completed during this time
Mr Barr said current tenants of Allawah Court will be relocated as part of the government's renewal of a series of identified public housing sites around Canberra
They will be assigned new homes as part of the program
The government is also preparing for the demolition of 1960s public housing buildings in the Northbourne Avenue precinct at Dickson and Lyneham
with the proceeds and 15 per cent asset sale bonus payment going towards the city-to-Gungahlin tramline
The territory will receive about $60 million in payments under a deal signed in February
including for the sale of outdated government office buildings and the ACTTAB betting agency
"One of the key priorities of my government has been urban renewal
ensuring to make sure we grow into our potential as a city while still maintaining everything that is great about the Canberra of old," Mr Barr said
"The sale of the site marks the beginning of one of the city's biggest urban renewal projects
the revitalisation of the Northbourne corridor."
Total cost for the Currong demolition was estimated in late 2014 at $3 million but the price blew out to $6 million after significant amounts of asbestos and other hazardous materials were found on the site
the ACT Heritage Council opted not to give heritage protection to buildings in the Allawah and Bega Courts precinct
finding the 1956 and 1957 flats did not make any important contribution to the ACT's public housing history
The proposed sample area would have included two buildings and a garden area at the Boolee Street end of the precinct
near the intersection with Cooyong Street and opposite Glebe Park

Allawah.A year after Georges River Council closed a large section of Kempt Field
asbestos and ground gas emissions arising from its time as a garbage tip
a large section of the site remains closed to due safety concerns to the community
Fencing along the affected perimeter and signage is in place to protect anyone visiting that part of the park
On the first anniversary of the closure of the site
Cr Ben Wang called for an update the current status of the NSW Government-owned Kempt Field site
specifically in relation to the removal of the eco-unfriendly bitumen area between the park and the Landmark tower Beyond in Durham Street
Hurstville on the northern end of the site
Cr Wang also asked council about the beautification of the park with trees and vegetation conducive to local ecology and installation of a much narrower more eco-friendly pedestrian pathway linking the tower with the park
He was told that council officers continue to meet with and provide support to the NSW Department of Planning and Environment (DPE)
who are the landowners of the Kempt Field site
DPE engaged a consultant to develop a business case to support the budget and funding submission to NSW Treasury for the remediation of Kempt Field
DPE are also currently in the process of developing a Remediation Action Plan to address ground gas emissions
contaminated land and subsidence issues that have been identified across the site
The Remediation Action Plan will determine the long-term management of the site its usability by the community
Georges River Council has also been developing an Asbestos Management Plan for the Kempt Field site
which was due to be finalised in December 2023
The council will continue to work closely with DPE and provide advice into any future embellishments including tree planting and vegetation and more sustainable path network infrastructure as part of the process of developing the Remediation Action Plan
A visit to Kempt Field by councillors Wang and Peter Mahoney helped shine a spotlight on the demise of this important piece of green space
Local active Bushcare volunteer and Oatley Flora and Fauna Conservation Society (OFF) member Susan Ghosn
who has been lobbying Council to plant more natives to beautify Hurstville
invited the councillors and OFF committee members Matt Allison and Adrian Polhill to an on-site meeting
"Trees which had been recently planted were in dire straits
a whole section of continuous tree canopy had been erased and replaced with a large pad of bitumen," Cr Wang said
"This once shady area is now a heat sink and an ugly addition to the park," he said
Cr Wang said hopefully the council and OFF members can nurture the neglected space back to a beautiful forest which gave Forest Road its name
Turpentine and Ironbark trees and other species associated with the rare and ecologically endangered vegetation community of which only 0.5 per cent remains in the Sydney Basin
along with other lush native vegetation will once again grace this part of Hurstville," he said
The Feros family purchased the pub in 2007, operating it for most of a decade before selling down their stake to White & Partners in 2017 for circa $30 million

John Feros’ JDA Hotels and associates have executed a sale and management deal on top gaming pub the Allawah Hotel for around $30 million
Located on 1,274sqm on a corner of Railway Parade
beside the refurbished Allawah train station
the Hotel is ranked #140 on the Liquor & Gaming list of NSW venues
JDA Hotels and associates acquired the Hotel in 2007
they have divested to a ‘special purpose vehicle’ of private equity
assembled and backed by White & Partners
the vendors have retained an ownership percentage and negotiated a management agreement to continue operation
in a deal brokered by Ray White Hotels’ director Andrew Jolliffe
“This is uncontroversially a very strong A-Grade gaming hotel sale
and consequently is indicative of a transaction that required a different approach than that typically deployed,” advised Jolliffe
Following principles of equity management in a top-dollar market
Feros retains ‘skin in the game’ at the Allawah and will enjoy the capital benefits of good operation
and says he looks forward to “value accretion” working with the new investors
“We had owned the Allawah Hotel for over a decade and decided the time was right to recalibrate the capital stack,” reports the JDA CEO
we were confident we could find a deal structure that works
and hence engaged with Andrew to deliver an outcome.”
The off-market sale process through Ray White was intended to garner responses from specific parties, involving transfer of a major asset, repositioning with JDA and specifics of a management agreement. In this respect it contrasted significantly to JDA’s very public auction of the Tennyson last December, bought for $37m by Justin Hemmes
“Whilst on-market campaigns are still hugely popular
and very often the perfect prescription for maximising an asset’s exit event
some properties and their respective clients are best served by a wholly off-market process,” furthered Jolliffe
The $30m sale of the Allawah is also an example of the market for A-Grade hotels
which typically reside on prime commercial sites in the heart of growth regions
close to major transport and infrastructure
Jolliffe suggests this “underwritten value fundamental” in relevant properties bodes continued strength of the asset class
particularly in an era of historically low cost of funding
It was acquired in 2007 by JDA Hotels, but two years ago Feros sold down his share to White & Partners for around $28 million
The Allawah represents Merivale’s second strong gaming pub acquisition, after its $37 million purchase of the Top100-ranked Tennyson in 2016
and will be the sixth pub freehold purchased through HTL.
