The state government has played down the prospect of a new train station at Altona North
just days after Infrastructure Victoria (IV) recommended one
An Altona North station was one of a number of proposals to improve public transport in Melbourne’s west made in IV’s draft 30-year infrastructure strategy released on Tuesday
Altona North has not had a train station since the closure of Paisley Station in the 1980’s and as the draft strategy notes
IV argues that with Altona North now a key activity centre
a new station would improve access to services and employment
encourage new homes and benefit passengers from Footscray through to Werribee
a state government spokesperson refused to back the idea or even directly refer to it
choosing to list the government’s existing transport infrastructure projects in the western suburbs instead
“We’re delivering for busy families across Melbourne’s west and building for our future,” the spokesperson said
“We’re getting on with making the Werribee line level crossing free
to allow for capacity uplifts in the future
The opening of the Metro Tunnel and West Gate Tunnel in 2025 will make a big difference for our growing west.”
The state government’s response is at odds with that of Hobsons Bay council which has long advocated for a new station and welcomed IV’s recommendation
“Gridlock of traffic heading to the West Gate Freeway on Millers Road and Melbourne Road is an everyday occurrence,” said Hobsons Bay mayor Daria Kellander of why an Altona North station was needed
She urged the state government to act on IV’s advice
“It’s important the state government prioritises actual delivery of this recommendation to provide more rail services and train stations that meet the growing needs of our community.”
Altona North resident Rowena Joske agreed
saying a new station built at an estimated cost of between $150 million and $250 million was actually cheap
“It’s a pretty low cost for a lot of value,” said Ms Joske who is also secretary of local community group Better West
She said with the government wanting more to build more homes and IV also recommending zoning changes to allow for more housing in the area

After Woolworths took over Tuckerbag in the 90’s

Altona North Soccer Club is seeking to attract more female players into its ranks
Altona North fielded its first ever junior girls team with an under-12s side taking to the field
Altona North’s junior girls head coach Joe Fraietta said the club was now looking to the future
“The club’s strategy is to create an inclusive and competitive girls platform and look to build and potentially expand their program in season 2025,” Mr Fraietta said
with Mr Fraietta hoping a strong junior program will just be a starting point
“Future expansion into senior female teams is highly desired,” he said
“The club would aspire to create a pathway to senior women’s football once facilities would support such a vision
We are working closely with Football Victoria on our game changer strategies of which girls and womens football is a key pillar.”
Altona North’s ability to expand its women’s program is currently restricted by a lack of dedicated female facilities at its home ground at Duane Reserve in Brooklyn
Mr Fraietta said he hoped the new junior girls program would lead to upgrades
“We are convinced that the demand for girls and womens football will eventually encourage more broader strategies around gender inclusivity at all soccer facilities to cater for all participants,” he said
Training for the new season has already begun

The missing link on the Kororoit Creek Trail that connects it through to the Federation Trail in Laverton North is complete
This opens up an exciting experience for riders in Melbourne’s south west who will also soon benefit from other route options to be opened up by the West Gate Tunnel Project
Until now the lower Kororoit Creek Trail travelled only as far north as the lookout at the GJ Hosken Reserve in Altona North
where the last link up to the Federation Trail had already been built
The West Gate Freeway project stepped in to provide the missing section
which now crosses from the east to the west side the of creek over the historic bluestone bridge
the underpasses and the landscaping are some of the best you would see
The trail is extra wide in sections because it will occasionally provide access to vehicles that maintain high-voltage power line towers in the area
Vegetation plantings along the previously built sections of the creek are a great example of how Melbourne’s waterways can be environmentally resurrected
councils and nearby business Toyota have done a superb job for the environment
The section of creek south of Barnes Road is still awaiting its trail and landscape upgrade
but the funding application went in recently
Once built this will take the trail through to Cherry Lake
and give riders the opportunity to ride to the beach in Altona
There are still some features to be installed in the new section during 2025
including interpretive signs and public art to commemorate the area’s heritage

Sunshine set the target of making the Victorian Turf Cricket Association grand final at the start of the Isaacs Howarth Shield season and have done exactly that
The Crows were at their dominant best with the bat on Saturday in their semi final against Altona Roosters and sent a message to minor premiers and grand final opponent
Coach Shafraz Mohamed said his playing group made the job easy
“I had faith in the team and once we made 343 on day one we were confident of getting the job done
“Everyone executed their role and made it easy for me.”
Mohamed said when he joined the club at the start of the season they felt that they had the base of a premiership side already at the club
He said they needed to find a couple of players to compliment the group
“We managed to find Pramud Hettiwaite who is an absolute legend,” he said
“He’s taken about 30 wickets and made 500 runs for the season
“We got him in and with the boys already there
the Crows were sent in to bat in warm conditions
They couldn’t have asked for much more as they finished the day at 4-343
Mohamed said getting plenty of runs out of their top order had been the focus at training on Thursday night and everyone played their role
Mohamed said they didn’t panic and they knew that they had the players to stop the run
“We have seven bowlers who can actually bowl,” he said
“We put three catches down that we should have caught
You can’t be doing that in the grand final
“We are always a chance with our bowling line up.”
Tharaka backed up his performance with the bat
finishing with 6-35 to be the pick of the bowlers
The Crows ended up using just five of their seven bowlers
The Crows will face minor premiers Altona North in the grand final
Altona North beat Doutta Stars in the other semi final
“We are the only side that has beaten them.”
Residents of Altona North were thrown into panic early Saturday morning when a fire broke out at an abandoned child care center
The facility was situated in the same block as the Holy Dormition of the Virgin Mary church and the new facilities of the Hobsons Bay Greek Orthodox Community
which had recently been handed over to developers for the area’s redevelopment
was not owned by the Community at the time of the fire
Emergency services responded to the blaze on Millers Road at 1.30am Saturday
Firefighting crews took more than an hour to bring the fire under control
president of the Hobsons Bay Greek Orthodox Community
told Neos Kosmos that approximately 50 fire trucks arrived at the scene
surrounding the area to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings and the nearby shopping center
“A crane was used to spray water from above towards the shopping center side,” said Dimitriou
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire
“The site had been abandoned for four years
with no electricity or flammable materials that could justify the building’s ignition,” Dimitriou said
explaining that “the owners of the childcare center had left some beds and mattresses that children used
“This attracted some homeless individuals
who found a way to enter the building from the back by making a hole in the fence separating it from the shopping center
It is believed that due to the cold that night
which got out of control with these disastrous results.”
Police conducted a thorough search of the site for potential victims but found none
the incident caused concern among many parents whose children attend the nearby Greek school
Dimitriou assured that all necessary checks had been carried out by the relevant authorities and there was no cause for concern
“Special firefighting crews conducted air measurements and confirmed that everything is clear and there is no reason for concern
and the Greek Centre hall are safe and will operate as normal.”
It was announced that the area would soon be cleared of the debris from the completely destroyed former childcare center
The flames melted even the iron bars of the building’s roof
The fire ravaged the abandoned childcare center in Altona North

Melbourne’s west urgently needs new train stations and an electrified Melton line
while the city’s tram lines should be extended and rapid bus routes built to run every five minutes
according to a plan to fill in the public transport system’s missing links
Rail passengers on the Melton and Wyndham Vale lines will struggle to get a seat by the 2030s, even with the delivery of longer V/Line trains expected by 2028
according to modelling by Infrastructure Victoria as part of a draft 30-year strategy to be released on Tuesday
The Western Freeway will be over-capacity in the next five to six years
and crowding on peak-hour Melton trains will increase by 50 per cent between 2031 and 2041
it recommends work to electrify the metropolitan rail out to Melton should begin by 2030
allowing for more frequent services for Melbourne’s rapidly growing west
where 860,000 people are expected to live by 2041
This would also free up trains to improve the timetable on the Wyndham Vale line – including 10-minute services for stations such as Tarneit – as a first step towards electrifying these services
Infrastructure Victoria found this would lead to 16,300 more train trips each day and 9000 fewer car journeys by 2041
It recommended other public transport developments to further ease congestion
The report says two additional tracks should be built on the Melton line between Sunshine and Caroline Springs
while two new stations should be built at Thornhill Park and Mount Atkinson
a new station at Altona North was recommended – at a cost of up to $250 million – to bridge the longest gap between stops across Melbourne’s rail network
“Our research shows that extending the Metro train line to Melton is needed urgently to meet rapidly growing demand,” Infrastructure Victoria chief executive Jonathan Spear said
“It will reduce congestion on many roads and train lines in the west during morning peak hours.”

Rowena Joske said that since Altona North’s Paisley railway station closed in 1985
it was like “living in a black hole” for public transport
a resident advocacy group for Altona North
said a significant amount of industrial land had been rezoned for medium and high-density housing in the area
The population is expected to increase by 70 per cent over 20 years
Joske wants more public transport options in the community
including the reopening of Paisley station
“We are a very car-dependent area at the moment
We know that Altona North can’t handle this growth without more public transport,” she said
Longer-term recommendations include altering the City Loop to boost services on the Craigieburn
This could be done by building three kilometres of new tunnel and separating two of the loop’s existing tunnels for these trains to create cross-city rail lines running from one end of Melbourne to another
The strategy also says Victoria should plan for the extension of Metro train network to Kalkallo in Melbourne’s north and Clyde in the south-east to support growing suburbs
Infrastructure Victoria has called on the government to start building eight tram extensions by 2030 to assist with the state’s goal of encouraging more housing in developed parts of Melbourne
This includes extending routes around the CBD from Swanston Street to Kensington and from Spencer Street to Flemington Bridge
Another two routes would connect Southern Cross Station and the future Anzac Station to Fishermans Bend
Chadstone would be connected by tram for the first time via a route linking East Malvern and Hughesdale
Other extensions would stretch from East Brighton to Moorabbin
Melville Road to Batman station in Coburg and Wattle Park to Burwood East
The total cost of the tram line extensions is estimated at between $4 billion and $5.5 billion
The four middle-ring upgrades are expected to encourage 32,000 new homes in these areas and boost daily public transport trips by 17,500
Another key plank of the body’s transport recommendations is to build a bus rapid transit network
which would include large buses running along dedicated lanes
It would offer high-frequency services every five minutes during peak hours and every 10 minutes at other times
Infrastructure Victoria has called for five routes to be progressed by the early 2030s
Huntingdale to Upper Ferntree Gully and Endeavour Hills to Southland
A busway along the Eastern Freeway should also be extended to Hoddle Street to prevent these services becoming gridlocked in the traffic bottleneck
The cost of the Eastern busway would be between $500 million and $1.4 billion
while the other routes range between $200 million and $900 million
Spear said running buses more often delivered benefits similar to big road or rail projects at much lower cost
and the first five rapid transit routes and the Eastern Freeway would total up to $3.5 billion
“Bus rapid transport routes in Melbourne could deliver at least $2.60 in benefits for every dollar spent,” he said
Existing bus routes should also run more often
including earlier starts and later finishes
to help shift workers who now had no choice but to drive
almost 60 per cent of residents cannot reach a service that arrives at least every 20 minutes or better,” Spear said
Infrastructure Victoria said that the high cost of materials and skill shortages were making new projects more difficult and expensive to deliver
It said that with net debt set to top $150 billion this year
the Victorian government might need to limit future spending
requiring it to carefully restrict investment to deliver the most benefits
Public Transport Users Association president Tony Morton said electrifying the rail line to Melton was a no-brainer
and backed the report’s focus on improved services and better use of existing road and rail
“There’s a lot of mega-project fatigue at the moment
and there’s a real perception that the government is a bit overextended on big infrastructure projects like the North East Link,” he said
“What we see from Infrastructure Victoria is when it comes to new initiatives
we ought to be taking a bit of a breath and just make sure that we’re actually sweating the assets that we’ve got and getting the most out of those.”

Homebuyers can save a fortune by looking at ‘sister suburbs’ that are offering the same convenience and proximity to the city but as much as 200% cheaper than their more expensive counterparts
‘Sister suburbs’ are neighbourhoods that are the same distance from the city centre
When a homebuyer is priced out of their preferred neighbourhood
they tend to look further out until they find a location and home that suits their budget
But savvy homebuyers may be able to secure the same level of convenience as their preferred location by looking in a different pocket
No matter how loyal you are to your side of the city
there may be a gem waiting for you on the other side of the tracks
REA Group senior economist Angus Moore said there were numerous factors that influenced the value of a suburb besides its proximity to the central business district (CBD)
Homebuyers can bag a bargain by looking at 'sister suburbs'
“The distance from the city centre is not the only thing that matters for how valuable a suburb is
and there's a few factors that we're seeing driving a lot of the differences here,” Mr Moore said
“One factor is the types of homes that exist in these suburbs
with some suburbs having more apartments and others having larger properties
“The other factor is where the suburbs are and the amenities available in those suburbs.”
REA Group senior economist Angus Moore said buyers looked a range of factors when searching for a home
Mr Moore said natural amenities such as beaches and parks could boost the appeal of a suburb
Connectivity to the city was another consideration
with public transport and roads influencing commute times
“All of these factors can affect the value of a suburb
even if it’s the same distance from the city centre,” Mr Moore said
Take a look at the ‘sister suburbs’ with some of the greatest price gaps across the country
buyers can snag a home at a massive discount if they know where to look
Take Arncliffe, located about 10 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD, where the median house price was less than half the price of Fairlight
While Fairlight offered homebuyers a coastal lifestyle on the northern beaches
Arncliffe was becoming more popular for its relative value for money
McGrath - Sans Souci real estate agent Jessica Terry said Arncliffe offered a mix of new housing developments and period homes that appealed to a range of buyers
"We're finding that many buyers are coming from the city or the inner west because the city is becoming quite expensive and out of reach
while Arncliffe is still close by and you can get a bit more for your money,” Ms Terry said
The four-bedroom house at 17 Somerville Street, Arncliffe sold for $1.83 million earlier this month
while there are lots of shops in Wolli Creek
“It’s a good option if you want to be close to the city and want to buy something bigger than what you could get in the city or the inner west.”
Collaroy and Riverwood
The two-bedroom unit at 5/7 Lauderdale Avenue, Fairlight fetched $4.7 million in August
Melbourne offered some significant savings for buyers willing to cross over to the other side of the city
The east-west divide was best displayed by the 246% median house price difference between Canterbury and Altona North
the median house price in the blue-chip eastern suburb of Canterbury was $3.2 million
while the Altona North median house price was $925,000
Sweeney Altona real estate agent Trent Borg said Altona North was attracting young couples and families looking for a house and land for under $1 million that was still close to the city
“I'm finding a lot more younger couples and families entering the market here because of the proximity to the city and the water,” Mr Borg said
and Altona Gate shopping centre and other shopping options
Last month, the four-bedroom home at 22 Joel Avenue, Altona North was bought for $1.031 million
“Many buyers are working in the city and like that Newport train station is nearby
while the West Gate tunnel project will be completed soon
“You can still pick up a house with a bit of land for under $1 million and be this close to the city.”
Looking at the north-south sister suburbs, Jacana in Melbourne’s north had a median house price of $575,000 compared to Bentleigh East in the southeast
where a house would set you back about $1.5 million
The five-bedroom house at 14 Margaret Street, Canterbury was purchased for $2.86 million earlier this month
Brisbane buyers have plenty of ‘sister suburbs’ with big savings too
Located about 11km from the Brisbane city centre, Banyo in the north and Robertson to the south had vastly different median house prices
The median house prices in Robertson and Banyo were $2.005 million and $915,000 respectively
Ray White – Banyo principal licensee real estate agent and owner Renee Rennie said Banyo offered a village-style lifestyle close to the city and the airport
“Banyo is 24 minutes from the CBD by train and it’s a 10-minute drive to the airport,” she said
The three-bedroom house at 5 Chapel Street, Banyo sold for $900,000 last month
“There is a real community feel here and we’re seeing a lot of younger professionals with families looking in the area
“There are five daycare centres in the area
which just shows you the explosion of the families who are purchasing in the area.”
Ms Rennie said there were a lot of homebuyers looking at Banyo who were new to the area
“Buyers are seeing good value for money here because of all of those attributes,” she said
“People are casting a wider net in their home search now and they want to live a certain number of kilometres from the CBD and they also want good access.”
In September, the five-bedroom house at 26 Davrod Street, Robertson was purchased for $2,380,888
there were huge price differences between suburbs of similar distance from the city centre
Somerton Park and Pennington
marking one of the biggest price differences in the city
The median house price in the seaside suburb of Somerton Park was $1.61 million
while Pennington in the north had a median price of $737,500
The three-bedroom house at 28 Price Avenue, Pennington was bought for $710,000 in October
At 14km from the CBD, the median prices in Stirling located in the Adelaide Hills and Para Hills situated in the northern suburbs were $1.406 million and $658,250
The price difference between the two suburbs was 114%
In October, the three-bedroom house at 12 Ferris Avenue, Somerton Park fetched $2.45 million
Homebuyers can also find some significant savings across Perth
The three-bedroom home at 22B Princess Road, Westminster was sold for $770,000 earlier this month
One of the biggest price differences was between Attadale and Westminster
The median price of the riverside suburb of Attadale – south of the city centre – was $1.82 million
while the northern suburb of Westminster was $601,500
Earlier this month, the five-bedroom house at 106 Burke Drive, Attadale sold for $7.525 million

The Federation Trail through Brooklyn will close from next week for an upgrade by the West Gate Tunnel project
The section of the trail between Millers Road and the Kororoit Creek in Brooklyn will be fully closed at 9pm from Tuesday 8 October and reopen in 10 weeks
A detour will be in place on the south side of the West Gate Freeway through Altona North and the Kororoit Creek Trail
will be be a compelling ride that takes in two new trail projects
the long-closed section of the Federation Trail along the West Gate Freeway will be reopened to bike traffic in its new alignment
and the new section of the Kororoit Creek Trail between Hosken Reserve and the West Gate Freeway bridge will also open
Riders will no longer have to use Blackshaws Road because they will be able to access the trail from the eastern trailhead at Fogarty Avenue in Yarraville
More details regarding these openings will be available in the coming days
The main detour will be via Primula Avenue
over the Rosala Avenue bridge and along Rosala Avenue to Glade Street
and across Blackshaws Road to the Kororoit Creek Trail
There is also a local detour on the north side of the freeway using Cypress Avenue in Brooklyn
but this is not recommended for riders heading further west on the trail
It would be very unwise to attempt to use Geelong Road as a detour due to the volume of trucks and traffic speed
The Federation Trail was an early example of a long-distance urban trail
taking advantage of the corridor of the former outfall sewer between Melbourne and Werribee
It proved a popular connection across Melbourne’s industrial west
but has deteriorated over time and become notorious for wheel-swallowing cracks
and the Greening the Pipeline project to revegetate and improve the total corridor
the Brooklyn section is set for major improvement
About 2km of the trail will be resurfaced during the upgrade
erosion and from changes in groundwater chemistry.
