Emergency services were called to a home on Dickens Road in Ambarvale about 11pm on Monday, following reports a woman had been shot.
"Initial reports say that up to three people got out of a dark-coloured sedan before firing shots at the house and leaving," Detective Superintendent Grant Healey said at a press conference on Tuesday.
The 65-year-old woman was inside the house at the time of the attack and sustained a wound to her leg.
Paramedics and police treated the woman, but she died at the scene.
A 34-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, who were also at the property at the time of the shooting, were uninjured.

The family living at the address were known to police, Superintendent Healey said.
He confirmed police believed the attack was targeted.
"We're investigating all three of them," he said of the people present at the home, and said the family had been living at the property for less than two months.
"Initially they were [cooperating with police], but at this point in time we're trying to work with them to get some more information."
The forensic teams were still investigating the number of weapons used.
"We're confident it's not domestic-violence related," Superintendent Healey said.
"It's abhorrent, somebody coming up to a house and putting shots off is totally reckless and the consequences are catastrophic."
He added that the family were distraught by the shooting and some members were working with police.
"Last night they were very, very upset. And they're still very upset this morning," he said.
"But it's tragic, your mother and the grandmother of your children [has] been shot by cowards that stood out the front of the house."
He called for anyone in the area with CCTV or dash cam footage to contact the police or CrimeStoppers, and said police had "limited CCTV" of the incident.
NSW Police, with assistance from State Crime Command's Homicide Squad, have established Strike Force Apslawn to investigate the incident.
Superintendent Healey has finished speaking.

Three people got out of a dark-coloured sedan but it was not clear how many opened fire at the house in Ambarvale in Sydney's southwest outskirts on Monday, police said.
There was a second public shooting little more than a day later, when bullets were fired at a house in Guildford West in Sydney's west about 2am on Wednesday.
There is no suggestion the incidents are linked and no injuries were reported in the second shooting.
Police are investigating if a burnt-out car found in nearby Villawood a short time after Wednesday's shooting is linked to the Guildford incident.
Fire crews were called to the blaze about 2.50am but the vehicle was destroyed.
It followed emergency services being called to a Dickens Road property about 11pm on Monday to treat Kim Duncan, 65, before she died at the scene.
The attack was targeted but it was unclear if Duncan, who was inside the house, was the intended victim, police said.
A 21-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man inside the home were not injured.
The occupants of the house, who authorities believed had lived there for six to eight weeks, were known to police.
Police were unable to interview some distraught family members and said they would give them more time to process the death.
"It's tragic ... your mother and the grandmother to your children has been shot by cowards that stood out the front of the house," Detective Superintendent Grant Healey said.
Police continue to search for the three people seen getting out of the car.
Nearby resident Louise Hoser said she heard gunshots soon after 10.30pm.
"Within 20 minutes I went to bed and my bedroom just lit up with the police lights ... they didn't have the sirens going, but there was a lot of police presence and ambulances up there," she told AAP.
"I woke my house up to alert them that something was happening ... it was very distressing to hear the family, and shocking to find out she was an elderly lady."
Bullet holes could be seen near stairs leading to the front of the home and on the front wall of the house.
Evidence markers dotted the driveway at the home on Tuesday as officers and the homicide squad began their probe.
Police said members of the public would be key to their investigation and asked witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers.

A brazen serial groper who preyed upon 18 women in an Australian nightclub has avoided jail time after a judge found his risk of reoffending was low
was facing up to 10 years in prison but was instead sentenced to a two-year community corrections order on Monday
He dodged reporters' questions as he left the Victorian County Court
The former PwC IT worker pleaded guilty to 17 charges of sexual assault and one count of attempted sexual assault over the attacks at Revolver Upstairs in Melbourne's inner east
CCTV footage from the nightclub showed Rayan groping his victims on the buttocks
stroking their backs and kissing them on the arms and shoulders
The attacks happened on three separate occasions in September and October 2023
Rayan admitted to police he touched one of the women accidentally but claimed he could not remember the other incidents because he was too drunk
Victorian County Court Judge Peter Rozen said he held reservations about those claims as he sentenced Rayan over the "brazen" attacks
"Your offending was deliberate and you knew what you were doing," he said
Judge Rozen said the women were entitled to feel safe in the nightclub and the scale of Rayan's crimes was concerning
He noted that three victim impact statements were read to the court
where the women described their ongoing anxiety and shattered sense of security
Judge Rozen also decided Rayan's moral culpability was considerable and said the 34-year-old lacked insight into his offending
But the judge accepted the sexual assaults were at the lower end of seriousness
given Rayan's victims were adults and the attacks were fleeting
no pending charges and no diagnosed mental health conditions
"I accept this offending was out of character for you," the judge said
Rayan was sentenced to a two-year community corrections order with 180 hours of unpaid community work
He will also have to complete treatment for alcohol abuse and programs to reduce his risk of reoffending
A leading Australian pollster says the coalition will be forced to carry out a "fundamental reorganisation" of its party structure to ensure ongoing relevance to voters after facing a wipeout in Saturday's election
As votes continue to be counted after Saturday's poll
figures show the coalition could slump to its lowest percentage of seats in parliament since the formation of the Liberal Party in the 1940s
the Australian Labor Party has claimed 86 seats in the House of Representatives compared to the coalition's 39
While Anthony Albanese has claimed an expanded mandate as PM with a larger majority in his second term
questions are being raised as to where the coalition will go
But it could be some time before a new leader is appointed by the Liberals
Deputy leader Sussan Ley said the party room would meet to elect an opposition leader and deputy
After consulting with the party's senior leadership
Ley said several seats where preferential counting was continuing would have to be decided before the meeting could take place
She said her party was reflecting on the results with humility
YouGov director of public data Paul Smith said the election was a referendum on the leadership of Peter Dutton
"The Liberal Party result was devastating and requires a fundamental reorganisation of who they are ..
they are not representative of Australians," he told AAP
"This is a situation where if they were a company
you would call in the administrators and look for a new business owner
After the opposition leader lost his seat of Dickson in Labor's biggest scalp of the election
a vacuum has emerged for the leadership of the coalition
Frontrunners include shadow treasurer Angus Taylor
along with opposition frontbenchers Dan Tehan and Andrew Hastie
Smith said the loss by the coalition was a "self-inflicted defeat"
"Their strategy was to win working-class votes in Sydney and Melbourne
but the problem was their strategy was at odds with their policies," he said
"They now hold no seats in Perth or Adelaide and hardly any in Sydney or Melbourne

A large-scale Southland farming company has been fined $82,500 for discharging effluent in a manner which could have entered waterways
Gladvale Farms Ltd committed the offending on two occasions in October 2019 at an Oreti Plains farm
The company was sentenced on Monday after being found guilty in February following an August 2024 judge-alone trial
Legal action against the company began when Environment Southland alleged the Resource Management Act had been breached through effluent discharge on or into land which could have resulted in the contaminant entering water
It was alleged the defendant irrigated at night without monitoring due to employees being off duty
The judgement said although it was not necessary to prove the contaminant had entered or impacted the waterway

Oscar Piastri maintained his advantage in the Formula 1 championship fight by winning the Miami Grand Prix this morning for his fourth win through six races this season
Piastri has now won three consecutive F1 races for McLaren Racing
where he and teammate Lando Norris are trying to dethrone four-time defending champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull
Piastri is the first McLaren driver to win three consecutive F1 races in 28 years; Mika Hakkinen did it with a win in the 1997 season finale and then victories in the first two races of 1998
He widened his lead over Norris in the driver standings to 16 points
while Verstappen trails Piastri by 32 points
New Zealand driver Liam Lawson was forced to withdraw his Racing Bulls car after 38 laps following an early collision with Australian Jack Doohan
Norris earned his first Grand Prix victory last year at Miami when he snapped Verstappen’s two-year winning streak at the course surrounding Hard Rock Stadium

Norris said Verstappen forced him off track and there was nothing he could do but try to avoid running into a wall — but F1 took no action against Verstappen

McLaren has decided it will allow Piastri and Norris to race each other cleanly without team orders

Norris was able to close the gap but could never catch Piastri and settled for second in a 1-2 finish for McLaren
The two held a nearly 40-second advantage over George Russell of Mercedes

Lady Gaga gave a free concert Saturday night in front of 2 million fans who poured onto Copacabana Beach for the biggest show of her career
(...) Thank you for making history with me,” Lady Gaga told a screaming crowd
kicked off the show at around 22.10pm local time with her 2011 song Bloody Mary
Cries of joy rose from the tightly-packed fans who sang and danced shoulder-to-shoulder on the vast stretch of sand
Concert organisers said 2.1 million people attended the show
switching between an array of dresses including one with the colours of the Brazilian flag
Some fans – many of them young – arrived on the beach at the crack of dawn to secure a good spot
“Today is the best day of my life,” said Manoela Dobes
a 27-year-old designer who was wearing a dress plastered with a photograph from when she met Lady Gaga in the United States in 2019
Madonna also turned Copacabana Beach into a massive dance floor last year
The large-scale performances are part of an effort led by City Hall to boost economic activity after Carnival and New Years’ Eve festivities and the upcoming month-long Saint John’s Day celebrations in June
“It brings activity to the city during what was previously considered the low season – filling hotels and increasing spending in bars
generating jobs and income for the population,” said Osmar Lima
the city’s secretary of economic development
in a statement released by Rio City Hall’s tourism department last month
Rio’s City Hall said in a recent report that around 1.6 million people were expected to attend Lady Gaga's concert and that the show should inject at least 600 million reais (NZ$178.3 million) into Rio’s economy
Similar concerts are scheduled to take place every year in May at least until 2028
Lady Gaga arrived in Rio in the early hours of Tuesday
The city has been alive with Gaga-mania since
as it geared up to welcome the pop star for her first show in the country since 2012
Rio’s metro employees danced to Lady Gaga’s 2008 hit song LoveGame and gave instructions for today in a video
A free exhibition celebrating her career sold out
While the vast majority of attendees were from Rio
the event also attracted Brazilians from across the country and international visitors
More than 500,000 tourists poured into the city in the days leading up to the show
according to data from the local bus station and Tom Jobim airport
Rio’s City Hall said in a statement yesterday
made a cross-continent trip from Colombia to Brazil to attend the show
“I’ve been a 100% fan of Lady Gaga my whole life,” said Serrano
who was wearing a T-shirt featuring Lady Gaga’s outlandish costumes over the years
the mega-star represents “total freedom of expression – being who one wants without shame”
Rio officials have a history of organising huge concerts on Copacabana Beach
Madonna’s show drew an estimated 1.6 million fans last year
while 4 million people flooded onto the beach for a 1994 New Year’s Eve show by Rod Stewart in 1994
that was the biggest free rock concert in history
sixteen sound towers were spread along the beach
Rio state’s security plan included the presence of 3300 military and 1500 police officers
Among those present were Lady Gaga admirers who remember their disappointment in 2017
when the artist cancelled a performance scheduled in Rio at the last minute due to health issues
“She's the best artist in the world,” the 25-year-old said

The new album's announcement came a week after she released her latest single What Was That
The song's music video was filmed at a mysterious pop-up event in New York City's Washington Square Park that was initially shut down by police. The event ended up going ahead after all, and fans who stayed got to hear the new song for the first time.

said he acted as a lookout in the ground-floor reception area
He said he was unarmed and did not personally threaten Kardashian
but admitted he shared responsibility for the crime

he co-authored a French-language book titled I Sequestered Kim Kardashian

Lorde has dropped her new single What Was That after weeks of cryptic posts and teases that set fans buzzing
It's the lead single from her upcoming fourth album and her first original solo release since 2021's Solar Power
which is three minutes and 28 seconds in length
Some fans had been lucky enough to hear the track in full earlier this week.
On Wednesday, Lorde posted a picture of Washington Square Park yesterday with the caption "tonight 7pm".
Fans flooded the park an hour before she was supposed to appear, with photos shared of eager fans scaling trees to catch a glimpse of the singer.
Shortly before she was to perform, the Royals singer took to social media to tell fans police had shut the event down.
"Omg @thepark the cops are shutting us down," the message read.
"I am truly amazed by how many of you showed !!!
"But they’re telling me you gotta disperse ... I’m so sorry."
However, the pop-up event ended up going ahead after all, with fans who stayed getting their first full airing of Lorde's new single.

More than 800 school students were suspended every week last year amid a classroom behaviour crisis that is leading to principals issuing sanctions for physical violence
Data released by the NSW Education Department shows 33,903 public school students were suspended last year
with the bulk of those for causing unacceptable risk to the health and safety of teachers or classmates
About one in 12 high school students was suspended
A police investigation was launched at Ambarvale High in south-west Sydney this week after numerous physical fights broke out at the school on Wednesday
Video footage of one attack shows a student running towards another boy before throwing multiple punches
with a female teacher caught up in the scrum of fighting schoolchildren
School parents say not enough is being done to address persistent misbehaviour and violent attacks
One mother said she was unsurprised when her son recounted the series of fights that occurred in the playground

“It seems like there are no repercussions,” said the mother
who did not wish to be named for privacy reasons
another mother whose son was punched in the face said she was concerned students had filmed the incidents
public school students are banned from accessing mobile devices during the day
He won’t be going back until I am satisfied that kid has been expelled
A total of 59,814 suspensions were issued to students last year
either for unacceptable risk to safety and health of others or for actual harm
the NSW Education Department said data collection issues and behaviour policy changes meant the figures could not be compared to previous years
Just over 100 students were expelled for “serious behaviours of concern” or for unsatisfactory participation for pupils aged over 17
The numbers are down from about 300 expulsions in 2018
Of the suspensions given for unacceptable risk to health and safety
17,478 were for aggressive behaviour; 13,646 for persistent misbehaviour; 3065 for physical violence; 2082 for verbal abuse; 1153 for misuse of technology and 663 for possessing a weapon
Controversial rules in the 2023 school year restricted principals from sending students home unless they had inflicted actual harm
while also capping the length of the suspensions
That policy was reversed in term one this year
with principals given the power to extend the length of suspensions and the ability to send students home for persistent bad behaviour
In another incident at Ambarvale High this week
a boy sprayed a girl in the face with an aerosol deodorant can
prompting her to enlist other girls to retaliate with more violence
“She got all her friends to go and bash him … he tried to pick one girl up and drop her … About 700 kids were watching the fight in the amphitheatre,” a student said
who asked not to be named so they could speak freely
said fights on the school grounds were frequent
A Department of Education spokesperson said the school had invited police to address students on Thursday
“This type of behaviour is completely unacceptable
It is not tolerated by Ambarvale High School
and does not reflect the wider school community,” the spokesperson said
“The students involved have been disciplined by the school
NSW Teachers’ Federation deputy president Amber Flohm said: “The profession expects a high standard of behaviour from every student
and the department has a legislated responsibility to ensure that teachers have a safe and healthy workplace.”
“It is not just a question of disadvantage; behaviour from students is a complex societal problem across a lot of different school communities.”
NSW Secondary Principals’ Council president Denise Lofts said schools were doing the heavy lifting when it came to addressing disadvantage and the complex mental health needs of young people
Schools are the place which proactively deal with it and wraps around those young students and their families,” she said
“Public education needs the funding in which to support disadvantage
whether it is around addressing violence which arrives in the school.”
She said no principal wanted to suspend a student
but said was necessary to ensure the classroom was conducive to learning
Support would be around extra school counselling
behaviour plan and skills for teachers around deescalation.”
A Senate inquiry last year recommended children be explicitly taught how to conduct themselves in schools
and called for a national behaviour curriculum
The federal government this week released a series of step-by-step guides for teachers on how to manage classrooms
Results from a Monash University survey in 2022 reveal a quarter of teachers feel unsafe in their workplace
Australian teenagers are also more likely to feel unsafe and bullied at school than their international peers
while the latest OECD data reveals schools are in the grip of a wellbeing crisis for girls and children have high levels of anxiety attached to their digital devices
Students also have a lower sense of belonging than the OECD average. In 2022
Australian students reported higher levels of exposure to bullying than all comparison countries except Latvia
While the NSW Education Department reports on suspension data in public schools
there is no equivalent publicly available figures for private and Catholic schools
President of the Australian Primary Principals Association
said schools were managing students with “poor self-regulation
and a rising number of children who require interventions.”
“Many schools are reporting more challenging behaviour and there are a whole lot of factors intersecting
Students who are facing disadvantage … and children growing up in houses were there is violence
We have challenges in our communities and these challenges are playing out in our schools,” she said
The latest NSW data shows 7138 public primary students were suspended last year
More than 1000 kindergarten to year 2 students were suspended due to “actual harm”
“Suspensions due to actual harm reveals a significant gender disparity across primary and secondary education levels,” the report said
About 70 per cent of all suspensions were for boys
About 4.3 per cent of all students were suspended last year
For Aboriginal students that rate rose to 12.3 per cent
A Department of Education spokesperson said there was zero tolerance for violent or inappropriate behaviour
“We continue to provide shoulder-to-shoulder support for teachers schools and students who have a right to teach in safe and productive classrooms environments
The safety and wellbeing of students is always our number one priority.”
“The department is continually looking at how it can support students and families
With the introduction of the revised behaviour policy in 2024
we also set up stronger reporting to identify students in need of dedicated support,” they said

DISTURBING footage shows a number Sydney schoolgirls in a violent punch-up and wielding knives in a suburban street.
Don't miss out on the headlines from News. Followed categories will be added to My News.
A 17-year-old girl has been charged following a violent brawl captured on camera involving knives and meat cleavers in Ambarvale last night.
The teen was charged with assaulting police, resist arrest and affray after officers were called to Jiniwin Place, in Sydney’s south-west, about 5pm yesterday following reports that a group of youths were fighting.
Footage taken of the fight shows one girl approaching another with what appears to be a kitchen knife in one hand, and a meat cleaver in another. Her opponent also seems to be holding a chopper.
The knives are thrown to the ground before one of the girls rushes at the other and starts punching her in the face. The two fall to the ground and wrestle as others egg them on.
The two are finally separated with one of them screaming “Get off me”.
But the fight continues as other girls start punching each other.
Guys in the crowd appear to relish the violence with one heard in the video saying “there’s another one” as a girl rushes another. Another boy says: “thump the b***ch now, thump the b***ch now”.
The street is just a block away from Thomas Reddell High School and some of the girls appear to be wearing school uniform, but a neighbour interviewed by Channel 7 said some of the girls were not local students.
“There were out-of-area kids, so these kids have left school, got on trains or buses to come and to start a fight like that was outrageous,” she said.
One of the girls was arrested at the scene and taken to Campbelltown Police Station and later granted conditional bail to appear before children’s court later this month.
Police say up to five people were involved in separate fights at the location with a crowd of 40 people watching on.
Initial reports suggest a number of weapons were brought to the scene but not used in the fight and there are no reports of serious injuries.
Police are urging witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers.

A $100,000 reward is on offer for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the death of Peter Beazley.
Mr Beazley, 39, was found dead in his home at Ambarvale in January 2002.
An inquest held in July 2006 by the Deputy State Coroner found that Mr Beazley had died from severe blunt trauma to the head.
But despite an extensive investigation the murder remains unsolved.
Detectives investigating the killing of Mr Beazley have conducted extensive inquiries but have now exhausted all leads.
Police believe there are people within the Ambarvale community with knowledge of the crime who have not come forward.

Harry McCarroll, 76, would spend his days walking the streets of Sydney's south-west, waving at neighbours and smiling under his thick, white whiskers as he carried his shopping bags home.
The grandfather of seven was doing just this and rushing home to see his granddaughter when a car ploughed into him and flung his body six metres through the air and into the side of a brick house at Ambarvale on Monday morning.

Neighbour Rawiri Nicholson said he remembers screaming after two men who got out of a crumpled Nissan Pulsar and sprinted down Dickens Road without turning around.
Mr Nicholson rolled Mr McCarroll onto his back and tried to revive him but he lost consciousness. Paramedics tried to save him but he died later in Campbelltown Hospital.
Happy-go-lucky man: Harry McCarroll died later in hospital.
Mr McCarroll's family described the retired Irish-born Leumeah Public School cleaner as a ''happy-go-lucky'' man who was looking forward to the birth of his first great grandchild.
A suspended learner driver, who was later charged over the hit-and-run, was allegedly under the influence of cannabis and crystal methamphetamine and driving a stolen car at the time, a court heard.
''I heard this big bang and then saw a car flipped over on our lawn and that's when we noticed this guy on our stairways,'' Mr Nicholson said. ''He was a really nice guy and we saw him pass here often. You could tell he didn't want to go, he was a fighter. He hung on for, until he could, and you could see the strength in his eyes.''
Matthew Lehn, 24, of Ingleburn, appeared briefly before Campbelltown Local Court on Tuesday after police arrested him and his alleged passenger on Monday night.
Mr Lehn spent the night in jail after police charged him with nine offences, including dangerous driving occasioning death, driving under the influence, negligent driving occasioning death, failing to stop and assist after impact causing death and possessing a prohibited drug. His lawyer told the court his client did not want to appear, but magistrate Robert Rabbidge ordered him to come up from the holding cells.
He was formally refused bail and is expected to face Campbelltown Local Court on August 14.
Mr McCarroll's former wife Siobhan, who has known him for the past 50 years, said he was a simple man who loved the sun, his children, grandchildren and his three sausage dogs. ''He was a small man with a big heart,'' she said.
''Harry would do anything for you and he would give anyone his last 10 bucks.
''Everyone knows him. He is one of those people who chats to everyone and he walked absolutely everywhere.''
Funeral arrangements have yet to be made. Mr McCarroll was also survived by his two daughters, Siobhan and Helen, and his seven grandchildren.
Harry McCarroll, 76, would spend his days walking the streets of Sydney's south-west, waving at neighbours and smiling under his thick, white whiskers as he carried his shopping bags home.

A group of children found the two-year-old's body dumped in a suitcase and floating on the lake at Ambarvale in Sydney's south-west.
Since his death, local residents have visited the site to pay their respects to the boy, who has since been dubbed the 'Lake Angel'.
Many members of the child's family, including his father Paul Shillingsworth, who was released from jail on a separate matter on Wednesday, are due to join local people who have been touched by his death.
Campbelltown resident Jason Robbins helped organise the memorial, which will begin at 5:00pm (AEST), and has told ABC 702 Local Radio plans are under way for a permanent memorial.
"We'll be taking donations tonight at the pond and all money raised will go towards a memorial site there at the pond," he said.
"We're also putting money into a trust fund and that money will go towards the Lake Angel's two siblings, his brother and sister."
Mr Robbins says the memorial will involve some speeches, prayers and a minute's silence, followed by balloons being released and a candle vigil.
He says members of the Aboriginal community will also be involved.
Dean Shillingsworth is due to be buried in his father's home town at Brewarrina, in western New South Wales, next week.
The boy's 26-year-old mother is in custody, charged with his murder.
Paul Shillingworth had been serving time at Junee prison for breaching parole.
