The Arncliffe Scots have proven an essential rugby league nursery over a number of years with Nick Tsougranis the latest young gun that the club has delivered to the Dragons
Tsougranis’ first taste of rugby league came as a four-year-old at Arncliffe – his local club and the same club his father likes to remind him he won a premiership with just a few years prior
he filtered into St George’s development system progressing through to Harold Matthews Cup and SG Ball – two sides for which he was named captain – and eventually Jersey Flegg and NSW Cup
“I’m a St George junior through and through,” Tsougranis said
I played all my junior footy at the Arncliffe Scots
Tsougranis earnt his first opportunity to train with the club he grew up supporting throughout the 2024 preseason
but the teenager was dealt some harsh learnings early
but I guess last year for me was a bit of a tough one,” he said
“I started the preseason and got about four weeks in and did my back
I didn’t end up playing until about Round 6
I also had surgery on my hand and had a minor calf strain… It was more learning about myself
coming back from adversity and I’ve tried to take that into this year now
just so I’m ready for training and I can avoid injury.”
just so I’m ready for training and I can avoid injury
Tsougranis however has had the opportunity to hit the ground running this summer in his second preseason slog under the guidance of Shane Flanagan with the 20-year-old eyeing a steadier campaign having since been promoted to the club’s development list
I’m excited for Round 1… I definitely feel more comfortable around the boys
Ray’s (Faitala-Mariner) been really good for me
I’ll ask him for some tips and stuff like that
Even guys like Goat – Tommy Eisenhuth – have been really good after video and stuff
It’s just good to chat with him about stuff
see what I could do differently or do better next time and just try to pick his brain a bit.”
Perhaps Tsougranis’ biggest footballing milestone up to this point was his first taste of rep footy in 2023 when he helped NSW’s Under 19s State of Origin side to a dominant victory
I’d never really been picked or anything like that
That was kind of my first experience in a camp and rep team like that
I was grateful because the way they announced it was pretty cool
I was playing against Newtown at Henson Park and then Timmo (Shaun Timmins) – who was one of the coaches – and Willie [Talau] came across and heaps of my family were there
and they told my whole family and me at the same time
There’s another rep jumper however that Tsougranis has his eyes on – the blue and white of Greece – to honour his four grandparents who hail from the islands of Kos and Kalymnos respectively
Greece made history when they made their Rugby League World Cup debut in the UK in 2022 just months after the sport attained government recognition back in Greece
They will be facing off against the United States at the end of the month in Las Vegas
but Tsougranis will have to wait a little longer for his international debut with club commitments coming first at this point of the preseason
“I can’t wait to play for Greece,” Tsougranis said
“I’ve been speaking to them and it’s more a matter of just finding a time where I can play
I’ll take it with both hands for sure… The World Cup was massive
The Australian and Greek community were just loving it
A lot of them love footy and we don’t get to see much of our national team
Tsougranis’ focus is instead on making the most of his upcoming campaign and adding to his tally of eight NSW Cup outings
“My goal is to get some Cup games under my belt
I just want to play consistent footy,” he said
it was pretty hard for me being in one week
I just want to play consistent footy at a quality that I’m happy with… That first year in Cup
I started in SG Ball and kind of went up into Cup
because I hadn’t done any full-time training yet

So, it’s a welcome surprise to discover our feature home is tucked well back from the street on a gently sloping and blissfully quiet battleaxe block, with plenty of parking, clutches of mature trees providing privacy, and a clear cityscape view that renders visitors momentarily speechless.
“When we first walked in the front door and saw the city views framed through those huge glass windows we were stunned,” says owner Marnie Kuypers.
Browse Domain’s property and lifestyle magazines.
Throw in the fact that it’s one of architect Nino Sydney’s coveted Beachcombers on a generous 714-square-metre block, and it feels a little like all your Christmases have come at once.
Introduced to the market by Lend Lease Homes in 1961, the Beachcomber was designed by Sydney when he was chief architect and has attracted thousands of fans.
Said to be inspired by Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye, the Beachcomber is a flat-roofed pavilion raised on slim steel columns. Underneath, there is space for parking and laundry facilities.
Structurally, this Arncliffe gem is in largely original condition, with a masonry core and lightweight frame above, mirroring Sydney’s early sketches. Inside, the kitchen has been renovated and opened up to the living spaces and the bathroom has been upgraded.
The original exposed Oregon beams and kauri floorboards have been retained, and Kuypers has indulged her love of mid-century design by adding timber panelling in the lounge room and boldly striped walls in the bedrooms.
The floor plan capitalises on the north-east aspect, with eaves designed to protect the house from the summer sun while allowing an abundance of natural light in any season.
As agent Marcus Lloyd-Jones puts it, good cross ventilation means this house feels easy-breezy any time of the year.
The living spaces and two of the three bedrooms open onto a full-length balcony with those city views dished up on the horizon beyond the surrounding terracotta tiled roofs and leafy treetops.
“Now a cult Australian icon, the Beachcomber is everything you could wish for in a house: natural light, breezes and views – and what views!” he says.
“In the morning, the sun comes up behind the trees, so it’s a gentle awakening, and in the evening when the sun sets, the setting rays reflect on the city,” says Kuypers. She also loves watching the wildlife, from black and white cockatoos to possums, blue tongue lizards and a pair of nesting willy wagtails.
The home is very much an oasis in the heart of a busy urban enclave.
“You drive down the driveway and you feel removed from everything,” she says. “We’re so lucky to be surrounded by trees and nature.”

Integrated builder, architect and developer TQM is planning more apartments in Sydney's burgeoning southern suburbs
There had been previous approval from Bayside Council for 60 apartments across a seven-level building before the upscale plans were recently submitted for the 3,070 sqm site on the corner of Duncan Street and Kyle Street
The $32 million project aims to address the demand for affordable housing
targeting very low to moderate-income households and providing adaptable living options for people with disabilities
and 14 three-bedroom apartments atop a three-level basement for 92 residential parking spaces
The Duncan Street development was designed by Design Workshop Australia to maximise solar access and minimise overshadowing
The building layout also ensures adequate separation between structures for ventilation
The project will also include 1,161 sqm of communal open space and landscaping that will feature indigenous plants to integrate with the natural environment
TQM, founded in 1999 by Maroun Taouk, has an extensive pipeline of apartments, predominantly in South Sydney, but as far south as Wollongong and as far north as Gosford
They're currently selling Fox Lane in Rockdale, Lotus Hurstville, and The Grand Gosford.

Billbergia is also undertaking one of the state’s largest social and affordable housing developments at Arncliffe Central with 75 per cent of the 804 apartments across four buildings earmarked for social and affordable accommodation
Billbergia development director Rick Graf said that although the NSW Government had been focused on the development of transport-oriented developments
the challenges around fragmented ownership around the identified areas would take some time to be ironed out
“Announcing the precincts is not the end of it
“They need to provide some co-ordination for masterplanning of precincts so it’s not 10 developers doing 10 different things.”
Graf said the NSW Government needed to release more land in order to encourage greater development of social and affordable housing
“Mobilising government land is the fastest way to get feasibilities working and projects going,” he said
He said projects such as Arncliffe Central were impossible without the support of government land and strong partnerships with community housing providers
Graf said Billbergia would look to do this kind of project again
A Sydney-based travel agent is being investigated by police after customers allege they were swindled out of thousands of dollars
In one instance, a customer alleged she had been swindled out of a staggering $160,000.
Nicole Vris said she used Travel World Sydney to book a holiday to Greece for 35 members of her family.
“To plan this holiday it takes a very long time, to take time off work, to save your money for the ticket and for your spending money,” Vris told Nine’s A Current Affair.
The family say they paid Travel World Sydney the $160,000 only to later find out that their booking confirmations weren’t real.
“We called Emirates directly, obviously they asked us for numbers that were on that itinerary, they just didn’t exist, we were not in the system.” a visibly distressed Vris told Nine.
She says most of the families will now no longer be able to attend the family reunion.
“A lot of families will never recover from this financially, it’s a disaster, they can’t recover.”
Meanwhile another customer – Fatima Awada – said she used the agency to book a trip to Germany. She said that she realised something was wrong when she hard the agency had been shut down. After ringing the airline she was distressed to discover her trip had been cancelled.
“Yeah, it is a big hit, and it is not just me. My sisters, my mum and her kids as well,” Awada is reported to have said.
“They paid nearly $10k. That’s just from us, that’s nearly $15k of our money.”
NSW released a statement saying they have “commenced an investigation under Strike Force Baile regarding alleged frauds involving a travel agency at Arncliffe”.
“Police have been told that a number of people have come forward to report that they had made travel arrangements with the agency and those bookings had not been honoured.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact St George Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Billbergia’s pipeline of work would accommodate about 3000 people
including those seeking social and affordable housing
across three mixed-tenure developments at Lidcombe
All three sites were funded and delivered by Billbergia on NSW Government sites next to transport hubs and were the result of a tri-party agreement between the developer
Homes NSW and community housing providers Evolve Housing Group and St George Community Housing (SGCH)
Construction is under way on the four-tower 804-apartment project at Arncliffe Central, which is reportedly the largest mixed-tenure housing development to date, in partnership with Evolve and SGCH.
The towers would rise above a retail podium and new public park, childcare centre, and a community centre and library, with 196 homes dedicated to social housing. An additional 406 affordable and essential worker rental homes could be added to this subsequent to further government support.
The projects set ambitious targets for social and affordable housing delivery with 41 per cent of apartments at Lidcombe Rise, 20 per cent at The Parade at West Ryde, and almost 75 per cent of apartments at Arncliffe Central dedicated to social and affordable housing, and key worker housing.
Homes NSW chief executive Rebecca Pinkstone said innovative public and private partnerships were helping to address the critical housing shortage across Greater Sydney.
“In tackling the housing crisis head-on, projects like Lidcombe Rise, The Parade, and now Arncliffe Central mark significant progress and demonstrate our commitment to fostering vibrant, inclusive communities with accessible housing options for all,” Pinkstone said.
Billbergia development director Rick Graf said mixed-tenure developments were a “crucial step forward” in addressing housing inequality.
“The ability to deploy government land assets for redevelopment makes it uniquely feasible to deliver high-quality social, affordable, and private-market homes at scale, helping to address the housing shortage,” Graf said.
“Our partnerships with Homes NSW, Evolve Housing and St George Community Housing allow us to redevelop government land into thriving and highly connected mixed-tenure communities.”
Evolve Housing chief executive Lyall Gorman said the three major partnerships with Billbergia and Homes NSW enabled the CHP to take steps forward in addressing the shortages of social and affordable housing in the Sydney basin.
“It’s allowed us to provide brand-new dwellings to people who, in some cases, have been waiting for years to access fit-for-purpose housing,” Gorman said.
“It is rewarding to see so many people in homes that are secure and well-located, thanks to projects like these.”
The state’s largest tier-one community-housing provider, St George Community Housing, is also embracing the partnership opportunities.
Chief executive Scott Langford said the Billbergia partnership would deliver more diverse and affordable homes at Arncliffe Central.
“We embrace partnerships with trustworthy developers and builders to deliver more homes for more people in locations well serviced by public transport,” Langford said.
Billbergia’s Rick Graf said deploying further government-owned land would “accelerate mixed-tenure supply from a trickle to a torrent for the greater good of the NSW community”.

“This is what can be achieved when we collaborate with the private and not-for-profit sectors
we’ll deliver both an increase to the supply of new social and private housing,” Newport said
Billbergia group managing director John Kinsella said the Arncliffe project was the third it would deliver in partnership with the NSW Land and Housing Corporation

“We’re looking forward to transforming the dated social housing into a thriving new community which blends private and social housing into a vibrant precinct containing more than 4000sq m of parklands and open space.”
Construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of next year for completion in the fourth quarter of 2025
Meanwhile, construction of Billbergia’s fourth residential high-rise on the Rhodes peninsula in Sydney’s inner-west is under way and a final fifth tower is in the early development stage

Australian federal police say Arncliffe man is accused of facilitating travel of a 17-year-old as part of an alleged trafficking ring
A Sydney man has been charged with trafficking a child from Indonesia to allegedly “engage in sex work”, the Australian federal police say.
The AFP said in a statement on Tuesday that they removed seven potential victims from sexual exploitation in Australia, following the investigation that resulted in Surya Subekti, a 43-year-old from the southern suburb of Arncliffe, being charged.
Subekti was charged with one count of trafficking in children, an offence which carries a maximum penalty of 25 years’ imprisonment.
Read moreHe faced Downing Centre local court on Tuesday where he was granted bail under the condition he not go within 500 metres of a brothel or access the internet
The AFP alleged he facilitated the transportation of a 17-year-old from Indonesia to Sydney to “engage in sex work”
“The AFP will allege the man is the principal of an organised crime syndicate that profited from human trafficking and worked with an Indonesian-based recruiter to find victims to send to Australia,” the AFP said in a statement
Subekti was arrested at his home on 10 July after a 20-month investigation by the AFP
Department of Home Affairs and Indonesian National Police (INP)

The investigation started in December 2022 after the AFP received intelligence that foreign nationals were arriving in Australia and forced into sexual servitude
Subekti was allegedly the “on-shore facilitator for multiple women who had arrived in Australia and subsequently engaged in sex work”
The AFP assisted the INP to identify a woman in Jakarta who was allegedly helping to recruit the women to travel to Australia
In March 2024, the AFP searched properties in the Sydney suburbs of Arncliffe and Banksia
and found foreign nationals who were assessed as “potential victims of human trafficking”
which were subject to further forensic examination
When Indonesian police searched the home of the Jakarta woman suspected of being a recruiter for the criminal group
they allegedly found multiple passports of other women who had already been recruited and were due to travel to Australia
they would have been at risk of exploitation,” the AFP said
“The INP subsequently arrested and charged the Jakarta woman with human trafficking offences.”

the AFP and ABF searched three brothels across Sydney
and found a further nine women alleged to have been engaged in sex work in violation of their visa conditions
A review of the seized materials identified another six women overseas who were scheduled to be entry trafficked into Australia for potential servitude
About 20 brothels across Sydney and the NSW Central Coast are believed to be linked to the syndicate’s activities
which police allege involves multiple victims
The AFP said evidence obtained during the search warrants allegedly linked a Sydney woman
It will be alleged she fraudulently enrolled students at an education provider in Sydney to prolong the victims’ stay in Australia
during which time they were further exploited to work in the sex industry instead of attending their enrolled courses
The woman’s visa was cancelled last month and she was detained and conveyed to Villawood detention centre as an unlawful non-citizen
“Human trafficking investigators work tirelessly to help victims struggling through atrocious situations and to ensure they are removed from harmful situations
and their alleged abusers face the full extent of the law in Australia
“We understand it can be incredibly difficult for vulnerable victims to come forward
and we want to assure them that there is help and protection available.”

make this under-the-radar suburb one of Sydney’s best
Located about 10km from the city, Arncliffe is the kind of neighbourhood that has been a hidden gem until relatively recently
Formerly an older suburb with a sleepy vibe
a rapid demographic shift has sparked urban renewal and is fast making it the place to be
Arncliffe was featured in the recent inaugural realestate.com.au Hot 100
nominated as an area on the rise with good future growth prospects
“It’s one of the first suburbs you hit when heading south from the inner-west,” local agent Sam Abbas from Stone Real Estate said
The multicultural hub has received an injection of fresh energy recently thanks to an influx of younger residents
from professional couples to growing families
They came in search of affordable home prices and stable rent
with comparatively lower prices than the likes of Newtown and Marrickville
Arncliffe could just be one of the best inner-city suburbs in Sydney
the median house price in Arncliffe is $1.42 million but the median unit price is $710,000
The median weekly advertised rent for a house is $700
The outlook for the year ahead is a positive one
where Arncliffe is well-positioned to hold up well
“An influx of inner-west and eastern suburbs buyers is driving the competition
which in turn will see Arncliffe get a higher number of buyers than neighbouring suburbs.”
Illustrating the diversity of dwellings in Arncliffe
there is a range of properties currently on the market to suit every buyer
For the first-home buyer market, 6/37 Burrows Street is a two-bedroom
sitting on the second floor of a small block with a north-facing aspect
The unit at 6/37 Burrows Street has a price guide of $650,000
It features a generously proportioned floor plan with separate living and dining spaces
And it’s all just steps from the central village
Priced below the house median is this brick semi at 1 Fairview Street
occupying a 340sqm corner block in a leafy neighbourhood
This brick semi at 1 Fairview Street has a lot of potential
It’s very liveable but has scope for improvements and adding individual personality to the kitchen and bathroom
And at the higher end of the market is charming Fairview at 197 Wollongong Road – an impressive heritage home with six bedrooms and three bathrooms
Arncliffe is home to some special character homes like Fairview at 197 Wollongong Road
It was built in 1881 as the home of future Hurstville Mayor Alexander Milsop and retains a number of period features
The property is scheduled for auction on 18 March
A central precinct surrounding the train station gives Arncliffe a friendly
village feel and there are signs of gentrification underway
“Public transport provides easy access to main hubs including the CBD
Road links also make it an extremely convenient place to live
with heaving hotspots like Newtown and Marrickville a quick 10-minute drive away
and the beach all a short drive away,” Mr Abbas said
Road and rail links make Arncliffe a convenient place to live
Proximity to desirable schools has put it in the sights of families too
and a host of parks throughout the area add to the appeal
from character dwellings to modern new-builds and apartments
both brick walk-up style and more contemporary units
A flurry of renovation activity in the past few years has helped to freshen streetscapes too
“There is better value for homebuyers in comparison to other areas within the same proximity to the CBD and beaches,” Mr Abbas said
“You can purchase a bigger parcel of land with a larger floorplan for better value.”
Development activity is on the up and the major Arncliffe Central project has sparked excitement
with the 1.3ha site bringing not just new dwellings but a high level of amenity
Arncliffe Central is a major development that will change the face of the suburb
A retail precinct will feature laneways dotted with shops and hospitality outlets
will also feature 4000sqm of gardens and greenery
crafting a park that connects people and promotes a rich biodiversity
Arncliffe Central will comprise four towers with a total of 744 apartments
“Arncliffe Central is likely to attract locals and young families seeking a low-maintenance lifestyle with the convenience of transport
and community infrastructure right on their doorstep,” sales director Lulu Chen said
“With major growth in the surrounding suburbs of Wolli Creek
Arncliffe is emerging as Sydney’s newest hotspot and
has been previously overlooked for development opportunities.”
Arncliffe Central will bring a high level of amenities with it
Stage one – a 19-storey building with 176 units
above a retail podium featuring a supermarket
Apartments are priced from $575,000 to $1.35 million
“The development will create an exciting urban lifestyle precinct that benefits the entire community,” Mr Abbas said

but the demographic is expanding as new buyers discover this inner-southern suburb
Stone Real Estate Rockdale director Sam Abbas says Arncliffe has shifted from being a magnet for new migrants
to being a value-for-money option for buyers moving out of the inner-western and eastern suburbs
“I’d say about 80 per cent of our buyers come from the inner west
15 per cent from the eastern suburbs and the remaining five per cent are locals,” he says
[In Arncliffe] they can buy a three-bedroom home on a 450-square-metre block with a side drive in a quiet street for similar money to an inner-west home in a little
Buyers like Lee Mangion and his partner Ruby Steele are finding more space for the kids and for working from home
Mangion spent about a year house hunting in the inner west before moving from Sydenham to Arncliffe last year and was pleasantly surprised
“It just wasn’t possible to get a house with any sort of decent yard at all [in the inner west],” he says
they looked directly onto a neighbour’s brick wall a metre away

A science enthusiast is facing 10 years' jail for importing nuclear material even though it was found to be harmless
Emmanuel Steven Lidden, 24, was arrested in August 2023 when officers in full hazmat suits swooped on his parents' Arncliffe unit in southern Sydney
blocking off the street and evacuating neighbours
They confiscated plutonium and depleted uranium in decorative vials and polymer cubes that Lidden kept by his bedside after buying from a US science collectables website to complete a real-life periodic table
Scientists found the samples were harmless
but Lidden pleaded guilty to importing nuclear material into Australia and possessing nuclear material without permission
which could land him in prison for over 10 years
Lidden's lawyer John Sutton said the anti-terror laws were clearly not aimed at people like Lidden
'These laws were created to protect society from terrorists and people who intend to cause mass destruction, not naive young science fans,' he told the Daily Telegraph.
The laws were created in 1987 and Lidden is the only person to have been prosecuted under them.
Asked about the appropriateness of pursuing Lidden, a Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions spokeswoman said it 'conducts all prosecutions in accordance with the Prosecution Policy of the Commonwealth'.
Lidden, who works in a fast food outlet, made 10 orders for the nuclear material from US website Luciteria Science beginning in May 2022.
The website states: 'Collecting elements is a fun way to learn about chemistry'.
Lidden did not disguise the orders or any of his contact details.
Authorities became aware of the imports after Lidden's 11th order in June 2023.
Australian Border Force blocked the order, which contained a sample of mercury and thorium, because it posed a potential radiation threat,
However, United Postal Service still mistakenly delivered the shipment to Lidden, court documents said.
After a UPS employee contacted Lidden and asked for the samples to be returned he readily agreed
'(Lidden) replied he was happy to return it if UPS would come and collect it,' the court documents said.
'He also asked … how it was delivered if it was prohibited in Australia.
'UPS explained they made an error in releasing it,' the documents said.
Lidden showed investigators invoices and packing slips for his 10 earlier purchases.
Following the raid, Lidden and his family were rushed to hospital and were cleared of radiation poisoning.
Fire and Rescue NSW conducted a 'safety sweep' before determining radiation emanations 'were at a level safe for human occupancy'.
While levels of 'uranium and mercury' were detected in Lidden's bedroom investigators found Lidden's table of elements was 'safe to be seized'.
A 'gamma-ray spectroscopy' was used to scan the cubes for radioactive material.
The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation confirmed positive results for plutonium, depleted uranium and other substances.
Luciteria Science has stopped selling plutonium.

The victim of a shooting in an Arncliffe street
Link copiedShareShare articleTwo gunmen who shot a man three times in a suburban Sydney street may have been trying to send a message to the victim
The victim, 23-year-old Mahmoud El-Zein, was shot at point blank range in the thighs and stomach in Arncliffe just after 5:30pm (AEDT) yesterday.
The gunmen, who were described as of Middle Eastern appearance and aged in their early 20s, are still on the run.
They were wearing hooded jumpers at the time of the shooting, police said.
"There was an intent not to cause a fatal injury, as best you can do that when you start shooting someone," Detective Superintendent Mark Walton said.
Mr El-Zein's injuries were yesterday described as critical, but Detective Superintendent Walton today said police had spoken with him.
"He obviously continues to be treated, and we continue to try to extract as much useful information from him as we can, considering his condition," he said.
"He's in a stable condition. It's not life threatening."
Police said Mr El-Zein has a criminal history.
Detective Superintendent Walton said 17 detectives were working to find the gunmen and take them into custody.
"It's always a major concern when criminals are armed and they have shown an intent to discharge a firearm at someone," he said.
"Whilst I'll describe that as an attempt to cause a non-fatal injury, the fact is when you shoot someone there is every likelihood that you are going to kill them."
Detective Superintendent Walton said a car "connected to the incident" had been seized for forensic examination.
He said police did not know what Mr El-Zein was doing in the area or if he had arranged to meet the gunmen.
The man was shot on Wollongong Road in Arncliffe on Monday. (ABC News: Luke Rosen )
He said Wollongong Road, where the shooting took place, was a main road in a residential area.
"There are some small shops in the area," he said.
"We do have some information from witnesses.
"It is likely they [the gunmen] would have had a car in the area and that's the sort of information we're looking for from anyone who can assist us."
Arncliffe resident Ali Jomma said locals were shocked by the shooting.
"We don't see things like this in this community; it's a great community to live in," he said.
"It's a shock to all of us, broad daylight, someone coming ... shooting, we're not used to it, to be honest."
He said a local soccer club was training at the park across the road.
"I was at the park opening the soccer fields. All I heard was three bangs," he said.
He said he did not know Mr El Zein, who is of a Lebanese background, but knew of him in the community.
"He's a working class man," he said.
"We came to this country to work. We left a war torn country to work. We didn't expect this."
