with the action kicking off at 11:44am (1:44pm AEST)
The track is currently a Good 4 and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit
Here are our best bets for Saturday’s racing from the west
(3) Kay Tee Why has two runs under the belt this preparation and will be cherry ripe for this third-up assignment
The three-year-old gelding is trained by Adam Durrant and will have regular hoop William Pike in the saddle
he was victorious over course and distance when settling last and sprinting straight past them
He then stepped up to 1200m and raced outside the leader in a slow tempo when finishing third
Dropping back to 1000m and racing with cover should see the gelding let down with a powerful burst
(5) Haida Gwaii broke the maiden a fortnight ago in maiden company after punching the breeze and racing away to win by almost two lengths
Haida Gwaii has options from barrier two and Brad Parnham can assess the situation early; either race in the first two or take some cover just behind the speed
She looks a big chance and carrying 3.5kg less than the favourite will only enhance her chances of success
(2) Desert Whisper returns from a brief spell and the three-year-old filly has had a 400m hit out
She is the winner of three races from 11 starts but may need the run and not sure how much early petrol she needs to spend
(7) Richanco returns to the races for the first time since December and comes off a trial win leading into this contest
Both of those wins came over 1200m so tackling the shorter distance this time around is a small query
His best work comes out in front and looks to get that opportunity; should run a bold race
(8) Black Ora commands immediate respect off the back of consecutive wins over 1200m and 1000m
There’s no reason to see why he won’t win again but prefer the price for Richanco
Gate four looks excellent and he will be close enough in the run with just 54kg on his back
(2) Esprit Garcon was brilliant in late 2023 and early 2024 with four wins on the bounce
he was unplaced in both runs before being turned out for a spell
Both trials don’t enthuse so prefer to see what he delivers first up
(9) Redback Flyer has won his past two starts comfortably at Pinjarra Scarpside and Pinjarra
and this looks an ideal race to notch the hat-trick
the three-year-old gelding can continue to work his way through the grades
and he will relish carrying just 54.5kg compared to Queen Of Jerusalem (60kg) and Audio Boy (58kg)
(2) Audio Boy has been a model of consistency this preparation without breaking through
He was second at his first two runs before finishing fourth over the 1800m at Pinjarra Scarpside
Audio Boy could settle midfield and should run another consistent race
(1) Queen Of Jerusalem has been up for a long time with this being her seventh run of the campaign
She was victorious over 2400m before a third in the Albany Community Cup (2100m)
She now drops back another 300m and goes up 5kg from that contest

IOWA (Race 3 No
2) Dodging the recent country cups can reap rewards for this Simon Miller-trained gelding
Iowa has been solid in two starts back from a break since attempting the Perth Cup
with both races run well below benchmark time
Those efforts show he should be peaking third-up for the rise to 2100 metres
which looks ideal given his record at the longer trips
and Iowa looks capable of stalking the speed or taking it up if it's not run truly enough
Either way I think he can outstay odds-on favourite Filthy Habits down the straight
KEEP ITA MYSTERY (Race 4 No
3) He's been honest throughout his career but went to a new level two starts back with gear changes
Keep Ita Mystery settled in the back half off a solid tempo before recording a meeting-best closing 400 metre sectional to take the lead late
Keep Ita Mystery didn't get quite as much speed on but again ran some of the best closing splits of the meeting to finish third
Now with the very reliable Clint Johnston-Porter riding
the gelding can settle a touch closer before unleashing a dominant finish
FILA MIA (Race 5 No
8) This daughter of Safeguard was sensational on debut in the Gimcrack Stakes
Ridden cold at the tail after drawing the widest gate
Fila Mia was badly held up until the 100-metre mark before running on strongly for fifth behind subsequent Karrakatta Plate winner Talkanco
Fila Mia had shown speed in her trial prior
so it's logical to assume Holly Watson makes use of an inside alley to settle the filly much closer this time
she only needs to find some clear galloping room on the turn to be awfully hard to hold out
LOVA SESSION (Race 9 No
and I suspect this mare will firm dramatically as we get closer to race time
Lova Session has done little wrong in all four starts this prep but hasn't quite had the best of luck at times
including last in her latest assignment when only finishing fourth yet still recording among the better closing splits of the meeting after striking a moderately run race
William Pike stays aboard and they look likely to get a more generous tempo this time as the likes of Our Rocky Bay and Stylish Lord roll along up front

Royal Ascot heroine Asfoora (Flying Artie) is poised for her highly anticipated return to the track in Saturday’s Irwin Stakes (Gr 3
The six-year-old mare has not raced in Australia for over 12 months since a fourth placing in The Galaxy (Gr 1
and trainer Henry Dwyer is hoping a successful South Australian sprinting assault will set her up for another fruitful European expedition
Dwyer had originally planned to resume the daughter of Flying Artie (Artie Schiller)
who is a homebred for Akram El-Fahkri’s Noor Elaine Farm
in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1
but said the mare had taken longer than expected to be ready for her return
We brought her back in to work a bit earlier in the year for the Lightning Stakes and she just didn’t quite come up and hadn’t quite re-acclimatised
but we’ve given her another break and she’s come back this time and she’s just terrific,” the Ballarat-based trained told ANZ Bloodstock News
She looks every bit as good as she did when she was racing well overseas in the middle of their summer
so she’s well and truly acclimatised back and seems to be going well so it’s a good kick off point for her
“She looks every bit as good as she did when she was racing well overseas in the middle of their summer
so she’s well and truly acclimatised back and seems to be going well so it’s a good kick off point for her.”
Well weighted with 56.5 kilograms under weight-for-age conditions
given she has by far the highest rating in the race
Dwyer expects the mare to run well with regular rider Mitch Aitken back on board
but admits she’s got bigger targets ahead and isn’t necessarily there to win on Saturday
“She had a very easy [exhibition] gallop at Ballarat
and then went to the trials at Ararat there and had a nice little spin around over 800 [metres]
We haven’t done too much with her,” Dwyer said
“Obviously first–up for seven months
there’s a bit of a fitness query there
which is about where you want them when you’ve got a long preparation ahead of you
she tends to go pretty well first–up
and she’ll just keep improving through the preparation
Asfoora will head to the Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1
1200m) to test her merit over the six furlongs
before making her way back to the northern hemisphere
“She’s over in Adelaide now at David Jolly’s and she’ll stay here through to the Sangster in two weeks and then all being well
she’ll hop on a plane over to Europe the week after that,” said Dwyer
“Not sure what the dynamics over there are
we were talking about training her at Chantilly potentially
depending on flights and transport and the rest of it
it’s a pretty well–worn path over there now
She settled in great at Newmarket last time and she knows the lay of the land so we’ve got a lot less to worry about this time than we did this time last year.”
Asfoora finished second in the Rubition Stakes (Gr 2
1100m) at Caulfield first-up last preparation
before missing the start and failing to fire when tenth at her next run in the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1
She then had her last Australian start in The Galaxy at Rosehill where she was beaten less than a length for fourth
was not solely focused on preparing Asfoora for the trip
but this year the team have more finely tuned the preparation in the hope of going above and beyond what they achieved last year
An excellent four-run northern hemisphere preparation for Asfoora began with a fourth-placed run in the Temple Stakes (Gr 2
a run that preceded the six-year-old’s fairytale success in the King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1
A pair of runs following her Ascot triumph saw Asfoora run a desperately close second in the King George Stakes (Gr 2
before another fourth in the Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1
where Dwyer admitted the mare was probably slightly over the top
“Last year she was up and going a lot earlier and that probably took a bit of sting out of the tail of her preparation,” the trainer said
“We were keen to get her to France for the [Prix de l’Abbaye at Longchamp] and maybe America [for the Breeders’ Cup]
but she just probably trained off by that stage
whereas this year we are probably two months behind where we were at the same stage
so that might be a chance to get her deeper into a preparation over in Europe and potentially America
she’d had those three runs last year where we were trying to convince ourselves she was going well enough to take overseas
the Oakleigh Plate and then The Galaxy and she never won any of them
She missed her start a couple of times and then drew the outside barrier in The Galaxy and traveled wide the whole way
it wasn’t an ideal preparation to go overseas off
but we had faith that she was going well and she proved that and hopefully she’s going equally as well now.”
Dywer said he is not exactly sure where her preparation will take her
it’s just a matter of where she has a lead-up run and if she has a lead-up run
and that’ll depend on how she goes in the Sangster and how she comes out of it
and that’ll depend on how she goes in the Sangster and how she comes out of it,” Dwyer said
“There’s a lead-up option at Haydock Park
but it can get quite wet as it did last year and there’s a lead up run in France and if were training her at Chantilly
On whether Asfoora can double-up in Royal Ascot glory
Dwyer is quietly confident the well-travelled mare can measure up once again on UK soil
it’s going to be a similar opposition to last year,” he said
“I think a couple of the main adversaries last year have been retired in Bradsell and Big Evs who have gone to stud
“Believing won the Al Quoz Sprint the other night
so she’ll probably front up at Royal Ascot again
we probably had her measure a couple of times and she had our measure a couple times
“[Asfoora] obviously races as well and copes well with the preparation and the travel
so there’s no reason she won’t do that again.”

Ascot hosts a big 10-race card on Saturday with the $5 million The Quokka taking centre stage
The first race will jump at 11:19am (1:19pm AEST) and the track is currently rated a Good 4 with the rail out three metres for the entire circuit
Here are our best bets for the WA metro meeting
(3) Trio raced below his best last time out when finishing sixth behind Without Reg and Deferred
He meets the winner better at the weights this time and getting back to the mile looks more suitable as he was a winner two back over course and distance
William Pike retains the ride on the four-year-old gelding and the smaller field should suit
(6) Western Power is third up from a spell for trainer Michael Grantham and has the services of Clint Johnston-Porter once again
They combined to win over 1400m last time out and this natural progression to the mile looks suitable
(4) Blazing Emerald is racing in tremendous form with the mare finishing within a half-length or so at her previous five starts; she won three of those for good measure
This opening race is very competitive for a small field of six runners and the perfect way to open proceedings before the main event later
(4) Be Bardot settled second last over the mile before letting down strongly in the home straight to defeat Audio Boy by a length on April 12
the four-year-old mare was building nicely into her prep with that victory coming third up from a spell
She was luckless second up when eighth prior and the win was deserved
Expect her to settle back again and should once again prove hard to beat as she steps up to 1800m for the second time in her career
(1) Memory Parade probably should have won the Good Friday Stakes (1800m) when beaten a half-length by Watch Me Rock
She didn’t have any clear running until it was too late
and she has very strong claims in this small field of seven runners
She does go up in weight which will be the query
(7) Grand Reserve is three runs into his prep and he gets back out to the 1800m where he is a winner from three attempts
His previous two runs over 1400m and 1500m have been good and he should be around the mark again
(1) Overpass picks himself and the defending champion has won both editions of The Quokka
The Bjorn Baker-trained six-year-old gelding is a perfect four-from-four at Ascot winning two Quokkas and two Winterbottom Stakes in 2023 and 2024
He returned to racing in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) when narrowly beaten by Briasa and the form holds up well with fourth-placed Jimmysstar since going on to capture the All Aged Stakes
Joshua Parr will press forward from gate 10 with ambitions of leading
(6) Headwall was also placed in the TJ Smith Stakes and the Matthew Smith-trained five-year-old gelding is set to surpass $1 million in prizemoney
His class is evident being a runner up in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) in March before his TJ Smith effort
Headwall will be back in the field but expect him to thunder home
(11) The Boss Lady represents the local brigade
and the four-year-old Michael Lane-trained mare has won four-straight races
including the Group 3 Roma Cup (1100m) outright following a protest where the initial result was ruled a dead heat
She looms as a place chance with small knockout claims

A huge, towering maple tree welcomes visitors to the bluestone cottage that Criss Canning and her husband, David Glenn, have been living in for 36 years.
In autumn, the grounds become a vision of fallen red leaves.
The colour-loving, creative couple – Canning is a still life artist and Glenn is a garden designer – started looking for their perfect home almost 40 years ago, and spent three years searching as far as Tasmania.
When they drove through Ascot, on the outskirts of Ballarat, they recognised something special about the area.
However, their real estate agent said they would be lucky to find a property in the tightly held community of second and third-generation farmers.
Yet it was meant to be when Burnside, an 1860s bluestone surrounded by a 13-hectare estate, became available.
With a 64-megalitre water license and “some of the best volcanic soil in the state”, it allowed them to realise their dream and create the now iconic Lambley Gardens & Nursery.
“We were still in our 40s, and we had a vision of what we wanted,” Canning says.

“There was quite a bit to do. But having said that, the main structure of the building is just wonderful.
“It’s a lovely, rambly old house that has an amazing warmth and a really peaceful feel.”
It took them a long time to get there, however, with tasks including the planting of hedges and lots of trees, and the restoration of the ceilings and fireplaces.
The home has five bedrooms plus a newly renovated kitchen and bathroom.
“The big, formal sitting room at the front of the house with the bay windows was my studio,” Canning says.
“It’s a beautiful, gracious room with pressed metal ceiling and an open fireplace.”
At the back of the house, a light-filled sunroom spills out to the north-facing back garden.
“We’ve got a 10-foot table in there, and it’s seen many large happy gatherings,” Canning says.
Over the years, the home has been a place for the family to come together, and an adored nursery for plant lovers near and far.
Canning laughs when she remembers that they once found an uninvited bride and groom taking photos in the garden.
The couple couldn’t bring themselves to ask the newlyweds to leave, so, instead, they watched the photoshoot unfold in front of the 2.7-metre-high pink Clematis and rows of tulips.
Burnside will always be a special place for the pair. After 12 years of living here, Canning discovered her great-great grandmother was born nearby in 1858.
The couple’s own grandchildren have grown up picking cherries, planting seeds, and harvesting food on the land.
“[We have] a lot of precious memories from the times they spent with us,” Canning says.
Despite the memories, the time has come for the couple to hand over Burnside to its next custodians.
“I just know that whoever does purchase the house will have a rich and happy life there, as we have,” Canning says. “It has truly been a beautiful place to be.”

WICKED VENOM (Race 2 No
He ran good time and sharp sectionals to score first up at Northam when last in work and went on to acquit himself well in city races
A strong recent trial win says Wicked Venom is back from a spell in at least the same sort of form
while the speed map says he is likely to get a nice suck along off the pace behind a moderate to fast tempo
peeling Wicked Venom clear on the turn to unleash a big finish
GREAT FORTUNE (Race 4 No
6) This gelding was terrific last prep after joining trainer David Harrison and looks ready to pick up where he left off after a good recent trial
Great Fortune strung together a hat-trick of victories over spring
punctuated by his demolition job leading throughout over a mile in very fast time
Great Fortune is unlikely to find the front in this
but he's also capable from off the speed and the recent trial when settling at the tail was sneakily good
let's trust Brad Parnham to get the tactics right first up over the 1400 metres
SNIPPY SEAN (Race 5 No
5) Snippy Sean can knock off his more fancied rivals
He sprinted home hard from the tail when resuming then showed much more speed over this track and distance next time out when finishing a close second
Snippy Sean then headed to Pinjarra last time for what should have been an easy kill but things went pear shaped and he never got fully clear down the straight to finish a luckless fifth
At his peak and staying at his pet distance
Snippy Sean should find a nice spot midfield in the running line before chiming in upon straightening
OVERPASS (Race 8 No
1) He keeps showing up in the west and taking out the big sprints so why would we expect anything different in this year's The Quokka
Overpass took out the first two runnings of this race as well as the past two Winterbottom Stakes to show a genuine affinity with Ascot and not much changes here at weight for age with a draw to stay out of early trouble while speeding across to settle on the pace
By all accounts he's settled in beautifully and worked well on the course proper last weekend

Four winners across the last two days at Punchestown saw Emmet Mullins finish the season with a bang and helped him set a new personal best for prize-money earnings
fuelled by strikes in some valuable handicaps earlier in the campaign
But after the loss of Corbetts Cross in the Cheltenham Gold Cup the trainer would love some new prospects capable of mixing it at the top level
and his two impressive Punchestown bumper winners could fill that void
Both Soldier In Milan and Vitorio Piel were well supported in the betting
hinting the yard knew exactly the level of talent they possessed
Vitorio Piel never saw another rival when stretching clear under John Gleeson
but arguably even more impressive was Soldier In Milan
who was a 16-length point-to-point winner in March 2024 but had been off the track since
He thrashed a Willie Mullins-trained favourite
with Emmet Mullins saying afterwards: “I think there could be big things ahead of him next season.”
Not many horses end one season running in a Group 1 over five furlongs and begin the next over a mile, but that is exactly what John and Thady Gosden have done with Crimson Advocate
A daughter of multiple top-level winner Nyquist
she landed the Group 2 Queen Mary at Royal Ascot in June 2023 before finishing sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint later that year when trained in the US by George Weaver
She beat only two home in the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes in June last year on her stable debut for the Gosdens
and was given a long time off as the yard reinvented her
Crimson Advocate proved her stamina for a mile in the Listed Snowdrop Fillies’ Stakes at Kempton in March
coming home well from off the pace and only narrowly failing to reel in the Group 1-placed Soprano
and she gained compensation for that when sticking on well in the Conqueror Stakes at Goodwood on Saturday
with the Duke of Cambridge – a race the Gosden yard has won five times – the likely option at Royal Ascot
No mare has won the Supreme Novices' Hurdle since Like-A-Butterfly in 2002
Bambino Fever became the third horse in four years to complete the Cheltenham-Punchestown bumper double (with a Grade 2 mares' bumper at the Dublin Racing Festival on her resume as well) and will be a really exciting novice hurdler this season
Although she is a point-to-point winner and connections believe she would have no problem upped in trip
the turn of foot displayed in her two Grade 1 wins has been striking – and a blend of speed and stamina is what you need for the Supreme
There was no Mares' Novices' Hurdle in Like-A-Butterfly's day to tempt her away but
given Bambino Fever's performances over the last few months and the mares' allowance she would receive
it would be great to see her chucked in against the best of the boys again next spring

William Pike will be sidelined for the remainder of the Ascot carnival after suffering a broken wrist riding an e scooter
It’s a major blow for the star hoop who was hoping to close out the Ascot carnival on Saturday partnering Western Empire in The Gold Rush (1400m)
Western Empire is the current Tabtouch favourite and co-trainers Grant and Alana Williams have booked interstate jockey
Pike’s injury required surgery and will keep him out of the saddle for at least two months
meaning he will miss next month’s Perth Cup (2400m)
It’s another ill-timed setback for Pike who fractured a heel in another motor accident at home in January that had him missing nearly three months
“He had an innocuous fall off a scooter,” Pike’s manager
and the injury doesn’t reflect the accident
“He certainly wasn’t going at speed or anything
“They operated on him overnight (Monday) and the wrist is in plaster
“He’ll be out for somewhere between eight to 10 weeks.”
Despite missing a chunk of last season with the foot injury
Pike stormed home to claim Perth’s jockey premiership
He currently sits on top of the Australian jockey premiership with 81.5 wins
ahead of Blake Shinn on 68 and Parnham with 67
Pike came up empty handed in Perth’s three Group 1 races this year but claimed Group 2 honours with Storyville in the WA Guineas (1600m)
A superb win by classy filly Machine Gun Gracie in the Natasha Stakes
rivals couldn’t get past her as she put them to the sword
leading from start to finish in a terrific front running display
It capped a memorable day for trainer Justin Erkelens and jockey Shaun O’Donnell
Justine Erkelens had Own The Queen dominate the filly ranks a year ago and 12-months on she looks set to do it again after unearthing Machine Gun Gracie
who will start a short priced favourite in the WA Oaks
Similar to Watch Me Gracie against the girls
Sail Session dominated the boys in the J.C.Roberts Stakes
gapping his next rival by 2 ¾ lengths
Trainer Dan Morton claimed his third victory after Another Chino (2023) and Scenic Shot (2006)
Watch Me Rock looked headed for another defeat until William Pike weaved his magic
The Awesome Rock gelding returned to the winner’s list after a perplexing fourth in the Bunbury Stakes
Stable mate Fluro Neuro ran second to give Grant and Alana Williams a race quinella
Lucy Fiore is knocking out city winners with regularity
Wednesday a double and a second consecutive J.C.Roberts Stakes on Sail Session before lifting Filthy Habits to a tight win in the last
William Pike would have enjoyed his first association aboard God’s Rapture
minus a few heart flutters for favourite backers when Watch Me Rock snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in the Grandstand Cup
Justine Erkelens and Shaun O’Donnell launched a massive day winning the first race with Jaz Session
but icing on the cake was Machine Gun Gracie in the Natasha Stakes
Small stable led by Bruce Kay and hard-working jockey Brandon Louis are getting maximum results from ultra consistent gelding Canny Rock who has put together two in a line late into his preparation
The son of Awesome Rock followed a hot speed before chiming in when Nobelity and Sure Thing got tired and ran out of gas in front
Petula’s first outing in nearly a year didn’t go to script when she beat only one to the line
It’s not easy for a two-year-old to back up a week from their debut and come out walloping the opposition
but that’s precisely what God’s Rapture did in the second race with a devastating final sprint
an event that trainer Ted Martinovich knows all too well after Lucy Mae won in 2017
Twilight Tale hit the line hard for second in the Natasha Stakes
Can her trainer Michael Grantham find something extra to turn the tables on Machine Gun Gracie in the WA Oaks in a fortnight
Ice Pick Nick back on track after the Bunbury Stakes flop
