Vendors Gaynor and Kurt Meyer in front of their house
Athelstone provides a blueprint for a quieter lifestyle close to the Adelaide Hills
but also near essential suburban amenities
As Gaynor and Kurt Meyer say — it’s got the convenience you’d expect of an inner suburb with natural trimmings
The couple are reluctantly giving up the serenity of their cul-de-sac location
four-bedroom home in Burnbank Grove after four and a half years
“It is simply time to downsize now,” Gaynor says
“The tranquillity of the location is incredible and I feel very safe here
ON THE MARKET: 44 Burnbank Grove, Athelstone is a four-bedroom home on the market with Belle Property for $649,000 to $690,000
“It’s amazing because you have all the convenience you’d want such as shops nearby and other amenities
CoreLogic data shows the median house price has increased 9.3 per cent in the past 12 months
“There are so many beautiful walks around here and we get to see echidnas and koalas in the street at times too.” Gaynor says they have the “countryside” just behind them
Yet she can “walk down the hill” to shop at Romeo’s Foodland supermarket on Fox Avenue
“I also use the Coles and Woolworths stores at the corner of Stradbroke and Montacute Roads and the Foodland at Newton at times,” she says
“It’s a very friendly neighbourhood and we know all our neighbours
“There are lots of newer homes in our vicinity but older parts of Athelstone have started to be redeveloped
The suburb is also dotted with many reserves
ON THE MARKET: 38C Burton Rd, Athelstone is a three-bedroom house on the market with Harris Real Estate
it has an asking price of $685,000 to $735,000
Sales agent Kevin Nguyen of Belle Property Norwood says Athelstone satisfies a common priority — access to quality schools like St Ignatius College
“It’s a very family-orientated area with many buyers attracted by the available schools
four-bedroom homes in the area to cater for bigger families.”
There is a good mix of schools within a 3.5km radius
Torrens Valley Christian School (combined)
Modbury Special School (combined) and Kildare College (Catholic)
Black Hill Conservation Park adjoins the suburb but there are numerous reserves dotted north and south of Gorge Rd
including Fox Avenue Reserve with a playground and Lovell Reserve with tennis courts
The 2024 school year is in full swing across South Australia's public schools and students are settling in to their learning routines
Here seven new school leaders give us an insight into their teaching careers
and hopes and challenges for the year ahead
Previous experience: I have worked as a teacher in both country and metro schools
I have held leadership positions at Highgate School and Murray Bridge South Primary School
covering both curriculum and student wellbeing
Looking forward to: I am most looking forward to working with our school community
building upon our great achievements over recent years and extending the opportunities of our wonderful students
now and in the years beyond their schooling
Biggest challenge for 2024: With the privilege of becoming principal
My initial challenge will be seeing the site through a different lens
camping and spending time with family and my three dogs (even when they chew my furniture - my dogs that is)
Previous experience: I have worked in several schools across the northern and north-eastern suburbs
providing support to students and teaching preschool to senior high school years. My professional background includes leadership in curriculum development
disabilities and most recently, in the role of deputy principal
Looking forward to: Athelstone School has serene grounds, an inclusive community and wonderful teachers who I am looking forward to leading and working alongside to foster a culture that prioritises both teacher and student agency
passionate leadership team who are excited to partner with staff and the community to ensure the success of each student and the whole school community
Biggest challenge for 2024: Finding the right balance of honouring and acknowledging the successful journey that has shaped Athelstone as a high-quality school
while also driving adaptability and new ways of thinking to promote innovative curriculum and a strong commitment to wellbeing
Likes: Connecting and having fun with students
Dislikes: When adults hold expectations of children that they would not impose upon themselves or other adults. Mosquitos
Previous experience: I have worked as a primary school teacher for close to 20 years
In recent years I’ve taught at Plympton International College
obtaining several acting leadership positions before becoming Director of Primary
Last year saw my first acting principal position at Springton Primary in Term Three
before becoming the principal at Brinkworth Primary and Early Childhood Centre
Looking forward to: Immersing myself within the Brinkworth community

It’s the school’s 50-year anniversary this year
and strangely enough it is also my 50th in March

I’m excited about working with peers who have extensive knowledge of leading schools in remote Aboriginal schools across this vast continent
Biggest challenge for 2024: This marks our sixth year living and working on the APY Lands
Living this remote (nearly 1600km away from Adelaide) is a constant challenge
but the most significant one is to keep innovating different ways of teaching and learning to better engage Anangu students
Likes: When I learn a new Pitjantjatjara or Yankuntjatjarra word and use it in context
and then being corrected by one of my students
Previous experience: I have 22 years of experience in teaching and various leadership roles at Quorn Area School

Looking forward to: Working with new staff

Good things happen when you distance yourself from negative people
Previous experience: I have been teaching for 30 years with 25 years focused on supporting students with additional needs
I have held roles in school leadership and also a number of positions within the department’s Student Support Services team

police say father allegedly took him from Stepney houseTopic:Crime
Police investigate the car the injured boy was in.
Link copiedShareShare articleA boy aged three has died of multiple stab wounds after his father allegedly took him from the family home in Adelaide's eastern suburbs.
Police say they were at the scene of an unrelated car crash in Gorge Road at suburban Athelstone about 9:00am on Tuesday when a man drove up to the scene and told them his son was injured.
The boy was taken from the vehicle and rushed to the Adelaide Women's and Children's Hospital but died.
The 36-year-old father, who had minor injuries, was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
He has been charged with the murder of the boy, before going into surgery for neck wounds police believe were self-inflicted.
Police Inspector Seamus McDaid says the boy's mother had called them about 8:25am on Tuesday to say her son had been taken by his father from their house at Stepney, where the family all lived.
"The mother of the child had reported that she had concerns for the safety of the child," he said.
Superintendent Graeme Adcock says it is unclear exactly what happened.
"It's very early to say in this investigation, all of these issues that may have impacted on the reasons why this has happened and how it's happened," he said.
"So it's very, very early and we're not able to say exactly whether it's mental health issues or what."
He says the incident has left the boy's mother "very distressed".
"Police are providing her with all the support we can, so it is difficult to get the information we need from husband and wife," he said.
"Until all those aspects settle down and we're able to get all the information we need we can't really get a definitive picture of what happened."
Superintendent Adcock says all the police officers concerned with the case have been given counselling.
"I've just visited the police officers involved - they are very upset. The ambulance officers are also very upset, so it's a very upsetting environment to everyone," he said.
The Major Crime squad and eastern Adelaide police are now investigating.
They are keen to hear from anyone who saw a black Volkswagen Amarok being driven in Adelaide's eastern suburbs during the morning.
They now have removed the vehicle from the scene at Athelstone.
Police have taken away the car. (ABC News: Simon Christie)
