Its review found several shortcomings in the PTA's handling of the situation and recommended that it 'review, update and implement policies and procedures' around managing such incidents. The CCC found the PTA's actions were 'inadequate' and that it may have failed to fully examine the circumstances around the use of force. In response, the PTA acknowledged improvements need to be made and is in process of updating its policies. CCC Commissioner John McKechnie said well-defined policies and procedures were crucial to 'safeguarding the public, the officers and the entire agency'. The CCC is following the PTA's implementation of the recommended reforms and will conduct a follow-up review in 12 months time. He said authorities were waiting to hear back from urban search and rescue teams on the extent of the damage. “It’s very dangerous fire ground for them to be working in, they’ve only been out there for about an hour,” he said. The emergency also closed the freeway in both directions between Russell Rd and Rowley Rd but it has since reopened. Firefighters on the ground were supported by crews in the air. is only one entrance point where residents can enter affected areas at the intersection of Bartram and Liddelow roads Police are warning 'rubberneckers' to stay away Two homes have been confirmed uninhabitable while 20 houses were damaged Authorities estimated they saved up to 200 homes from the blaze which burnt more than 500 hectares and started in Forrestdale before strong winds pushed it towards Banjup The arson squad have been called in to investigate the cause of the suspicious blaze Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) superintendent Greg Feeney said a number of fires have been lit in the area recently Joe Francis was scathing in his criticism of arsonists "We know that about one third of bushfires in Western Australia every year are deliberately lit and this is akin to urban terrorism," he said "People live their lives in fear and have to panic when these massive fires come towards them." at the bushfire community meeting at Armadale Arena About 250 firefighters and 96 appliances will remain on the ground overnight to control flare ups more than 200 firefighters and a fleet of aerial water bombers helped contain the fire The Banjup Residents Group vice president Ian Thurston paid tribute to firefighters and says it is a miracle no homes have been lost "At the moment what we really want to do is focus on the firefighters because they've done just an extraordinary job," he said "We stayed and watched the helicopters and the aircraft crew dropping water everywhere and they saved every house in Banjup." DFES map of the Banjup bushfire in Perth's south-east on January 3 Check the DFES website for the latest information (DFES) The area remains on a watch-and-act alert with a number of roads closed There were fears strong winds forecast for today could see the blaze flare again Fire and Emergency Services spokesman Brad Delavale says gusty wind conditions had hampered firefighting "It's been difficult because of the wind reports of spotting 500 metres ahead of the fire," he said "Properties definitely came under threat mostly yesterday afternoon but also overnight "There was some pockets of unburnt bushland that flared up overnight and put some properties at risk and the crews were quick to react." Mr Delavale says the fire is in national park and swamp land and has been difficult to contain Residents at today's community meeting "There's lots of semi rural housing scattered through the middle of the fire," he said "The fire front hit the suburb of Atwell and there's been some reports of minor damage to some of the homes that were in that front "The weather conditions have maintained the same wind direction as yesterday which was in our favour and we had reasonably high humidity which assisted it's going to be hot and dry again and we are going to get a wind change around lunch time A number of people took shelter at Armadale Arena overnight Western Power has replaced 48 poles damaged in the blaze but power will remain off to some homes in the affected areas The utility provider says about 500 properties in the area lost power as a result of the fire Some homes may need an electrician to check their wiring is safe before it is reconnected to the network To keep up to date, check the DFES website.
