The 2025 season is just around the corner so EDFL Media will be previewing each club heading into Round One
we chat to Avondale Heights coach Andrew Kahofer who provides some insights on their 2025 campaign
"The biggest focus has been learning the game style
but we have addressed clear gaps that were identified and worked to fill those accordingly."
so it's hard to call out just one or two players
I can see the development coming over the season as we grow into our style and put games into these players."
and as the cliche goes do just that and continue to grow as a group."
Player most likely to become a coach one day
What match are you most looking forward to in 2025 and why
Avondale Heights will be in Division One for the first time in over 20 years after a lean period in the top flight
and will be keen to restore some success at Canning Reserve
It's hard to know where the Heights will fit in the division with a number of senior departures
majority of their recruits new to the league
and their social media keeping a low profile
Points will be an issue with some of their new recruits who come across with senior experience
but the Heights have managed to keep enough talent with Premier Division experience to suggest they could be in the finals mix

Residents of a flooded retirement village in Melbourne’s north-west face being marooned in homes rendered unsellable after a new report rejected a government buyback scheme
despite finding serious mistakes were made in planning the development
Forty-seven villas in the Avondale Heights retirement village Rivervue were flooded when the Maribyrnong River burst its banks in 2022

according to a parliamentary report tabled this week
built after Melbourne Water relied on inaccurate modelling and ineffective mitigation works to green-light their construction on the floodplain
“Mistakes were clearly made,” the report found
The report stopped short of recommending a buyback scheme, as has been implemented in other states, arguing it would be too costly for the Victorian government. NSW – which also saw severe flooding two years ago – has a voluntary buyback scheme
the report recommends the government fund the retrofitting or raising of flood-prone homes
Priority would be given to the thousands of residents who were flooded statewide in 2022
including the more than 600 properties in Melbourne’s west

The Victorian flood inquiry report, which includes 73 recommendations, took 18 months to complete and was sparked in the wake of an Age investigation into the disaster that uncovered failures in the emergency warning system and planning decisions
Rivervue resident Stan Korkliniewski’s home was hit by floodwaters in 2022
He said he was not interested in retrofitting the property for flood resilience
He was disappointed there were no recommendations to relocate affected residents within the retirement village or to buy back their homes
“A lot of us have come here at later stages of life seeking peace and security and all that’s happened is we have lost our wealth
The government should recognise that,” he said
Korkliniewski said there was enough evidence laid out in the report about faults in the planning process for a class action to be considered
“It’s not a question of if we get flooded again
“We in the west get treated like second-class citizens.”
The impact to property values at Rivervue is spreading beyond just homes that were inundated in 2022
One unit that was not flooded has not received a buyer offer in the two years since it was put on the market
A property expert with knowledge of the situation
but who asked not to be named to speak freely
said it was frustrating that a buyback scheme was rejected by the parliamentary committee
“There’s the contagion impact of the village being known as flood-prone
I feel for those who have actually been flooded because their houses are worth virtually nothing,” he said
The report found that inadequate record-keeping by Melbourne Water regarding the Rivervue development resulted in a lack of transparency about the decision-making process in the early 2000s
A Melbourne Water spokesman confirmed that it was the relevant referral authority that had reviewed the proposed retirement village plan
Melbourne Water found the developer “had removed the flood risk” – despite this
been working with Rivervue residents to support development of an emergency management plan for the site
He also said retrofitting could be “an appropriate response to flood risk in some cases”
a Legalise Cannabis MP and the inquiry’s deputy chair
said Melbourne Water’s inability to explain what had happened because of “historical events” was not good enough
Ettershank said it was “hardly likely to encourage public confidence that ‘lost in the mists of time’ barely extends back 15 years”
Ettershank had hoped the report would deliver more solutions for flood-hit residents along the Maribyrnong River
“What we’ve not come up with are long-term resolutions for these people’s terrible problems,” he said
“It’s absolutely incumbent upon government to actually start looking at solutions for those people
The report noted the Flemington Racecourse flood wall built by the Victoria Racing Club in 2007 had “increased the extent and duration of the flood in [the suburb of] Maribyrnong”
The flood wall around Flemington Racecourse on October 14
The wall increased flood levels by up to three centimetres in some residential areas and lengthened its duration. Some properties flooded would likely have avoided inundation had the wall not been built, an earlier report overseen by Melbourne Water found
The parliamentary report found that construction works on the river
designed to offset the impact of major flooding on locals
The Allan government has until January to respond to the report
Water Minister Harriet Shing’s spokeswoman said the government was considering the report’s recommendations
She said the state was investing more than $22 million for council flood planning and spent $2.5 billion with the Commonwealth supporting flood-hit communities
Victorian Greens leader Ellen Sandell said the report showed major failures in Victoria’s planning system
“While the report makes some good recommendations
are still facing significant costs and uncertainty for poor government decisions
These residents deserve justice and compensation.”

The report questions the reliance on mitigation works to justify floodplain development
but Maribyrnong Community Recovery Association president Madeleine Serle criticised the lack of mitigation solutions for at-risk residents
“We want to continue to push for federal climate change disaster funding to do whole-of-catchment mitigation work,” she said
Other recommendations in the report include overhauling the state’s early warning system and emergency management
and disclosing when a property is flood-prone in vendor statements
It also suggests limiting development in flood zones
requiring that the Inspector-General for Emergency Management review every natural disaster and that floodplain management authorities produce more frequent
The report is highly critical of inadequate management of flood levees in rural areas and recommends increasing the flood storage capacity of Lake Eppalock
Rivervue owner Tigcorp was contacted for comment but a spokesman said they could not respond by deadline

Airport West have continued their charge towards a finals berth
defeating Avondale Heights by 56 points at Canning Reserve
Saturday’s win gives the Eagles finals chances a huge boost with Brent Taylor’s side now sitting just six points outside the top five after Aberfeldie and Greenvale failed to pick up four points on the weekend
The visitors were slow out of the blocks and trailed by three points at quarter time before getting their noses in front at the main break
The Eagles blew the game wide open when they piled on seven goals in the third term to set up a 38-point lead at the final change
before booting five fourth-quarter goals to runaway with a comfortable victory
Captain Ned Gentile starred once again with the home grown product making the most of the wet conditions to kick five goals and set up the victory for his side
Justin Cappelletti and Matthew Leeflang also contributed strongly
Liam Bianco and Ben Hempel stood out for the home side with both men kicking three goals each on a day when they struggled to hit the scoreboard
Airport West will be hoping to move closer to the top five when they host Greenvale
while Avondale Heights will travel to Keilor to take on the Blues
Essendon Doutta Stars have recorded a huge upset
A win would’ve almost guaranteed Aberfeldie a return to finals footy
but instead will need to win two of the final four games to assure them a spot in the top five
The game appeared to be a tight tussle early with the home side taking a two point lead into quarter time and half time before Douttas got on top and opened up a 15-point three quarter time lead thanks to four third-quarter goals
Abers were able to reduce the margin to one point after Douttas missed five shots in a row and the Rillas kicked two quick goals
however they weren’t able to capitalise on the momentum with the Stars kicking the final two goals to run away with the win
Maison Goodman was instrumental in the win kicking two goals
while Michael Kiraly and Patrick McLaughlin both played pivotal roles with two goals each
veteran Luke Davis led from the front with another solid game while Joey Dimasi and Jack Middleton fought hard all day
Abers will be looking to bounce back when they take on rivals Strathmore at Lebanon Reserve
while Douttas will be hoping to make it two wins in a row when they face Deer Park at home
Keilor have survived a huge scare to come away with their fourteenth win for the year
defeating Strathmore by two points at Lebanon Reserve
Saturday’s match is the only time anyone has gotten within 40 points of the reigning premiers this season and likely won’t be the last time these two sides see each other in 2024
Coach Mick McGuane said his side had the ascendancy in the first half
however Strathmore’s work rate and hunt around the coal face as well as their clearance domination was far more superior in the third quarter which helped them to get back into the game
He was pleased his side were able to hang in there and come away with the victory
It seemed to be business as usual when Keilor got the jump on their rivals out of the gates and set up a 21-point lead by half time
however Strathmore were able to wrestle the momentum back their way with five third-quarter goals
The ladder leaders took their opportunities late and got back in front to come away with another victory
Josh Honey had another fantastic game with two goals while Oskar Smartt and Christos Kosmas stood tall late to help their side get over the line in a tight affair
Athan Tsialtas was the most dominant forward on the ground with three goals
while Brock Egglestone had another good game along with Kade Mueller
Strathmore will be hoping to get back on the winner’s list when they take on Aberfeldie at Lebanon Reserve
while Keilor will play Avondale Heights at home
Deer Park have broken their five-game losing streak defeating East Keilor by 11 points at Overland Reserve
The loss drops East Keilor down to eighth on the ladder behind Essendon Doutta Stars while Deer Park remain in ninth spot and all but safe from relegation
Scores were level at the first break before the Cougars were held goalless in the second term and trailed by 11 points at the main break
Deer Park were able to maintain their lead in the second half thanks to six second half goals
while holding firm to only concede five goals to take their fourth win for the year
Jamie Madigan’s side had plenty of contributors as captain Spiros Amarantidis
and Jackson Barling all stood out with two goals each
Frank Campisi was a handful for the Deer Park defenders with four goals
while Matthew Dennis put in another superb performance with three goals
Deer Park will be hoping for more of the same when they take on Essendon Doutta Stars at Nipper Jordan Oval
while East Keilor will take on Pascoe Vale at Overland Reserve
Pascoe Vale have moved back into second spot on the ladder
defeating Greenvale by 72 points at Raeburn Reserve
Saturday’s win is the Panthers eleventh for the year and are now firming for a home qualifying final'
while Greenvale are still fifth on the ladder but now only have a six-point buffer on Airport West with a difficult fixture to finish the season
It was Leigh Tudor’s side’s defence that set up the victory after they only conceded the one goal for the entire match while capitalising on opportunities in difficult conditions
Last year’s preliminary finalists opened up a 42-point lead by half time and extended their lead to 65 points at the final change before cruising to a comfortable victory
Josh Iacobaccio was dominant for the men in red and black with three goals
while youngsters Charles Bolmat and Mahmoud Taha provided plenty of spark with two goals each
Corey Baker provided the only major highlight for the visitors kicking their only goal
however Jackson Kenneth and Jarryd Bonello fought hard on a difficult day
Next week Pascoe Vale will travel to East Keilor to take on the Cougars
while Greenvale will play Airport West at Hansen Reserve in a game that will shape the top five
Aberfeldie have handed Hillside their first loss for the year
defeating the Sharks by four points at Aberfeldie Park West
Hillside’s top spot on the ladder isn’t under threat with the ladder leaders still a game and 45 percent clear of their nearest rivals while Aberfeldie have closed the gap on the top two
It was a hot start for the home side who kicked the first two goals of the game to open up a 12-point lead at quarter time
The lead was slashed to four points before a goalless third term set up a thrilling final quarter
The ladder leaders got their noses in front when they goaled at the four-minute mark of the final term before Abers wrestled the lead back with five minutes to play and held on for their best win of the year
Meg Grogan stood tall in just her fourth game of senior footy kicking one goal
while Erica Markesich and Emily Smith also hit the scoreboard to help their side get over the line
Despite succumbing to their first loss for the year
Annie Gray and Kiara Rigg both put in solid performances and kicked one goal each
Hillside will be hoping to bounce back next week when they take on Maribyrnong Park at home
while Aberfeldie will travel to Green Gully Road to take on Keilor
Maribyrnong Park have picked up a crucial four points defeating Keilor by 11 points at Walsh Oval
The win sees the Lions sit inside the top four with one game left to play and sets up a huge game with ladder leaders Hillside next week
The game was evenly poised for much of the day with Marby taking a nine-point lead into every change before extending their advantage to 11 points by the final siren
Tegan Matthews was dominant once again in difficult conditions
booting three majors to take her two goals clear at the top of the leading goal kickers tally
while Zhoe Drust and Charlotte Rayner both had solid games
the visitors fought hard all day with Madeline Barton (two goals) and Emily O’Keefe (one goal) being rewarded for their efforts
Maribyrnong Park will be hoping to secure a finals berth when they take on Hillside at Shark Park
Moonee Valley have taken a stirring win and given their finals chances a huge boost
defeating Essendon Doutta Stars by eight points at Ormond Park
The win moves the Valley up to fifth on the ladder and equal on points with fourth-placed Maribyrnong Park
while Douttas have slipped to sixth spot but only one game outside of the four and have a far superior percentage than the two sides above them
After an even first term with neither side able to find the big sticks
the home side kicked away in the second quarter with two goals to establish a 13-point lead at the main break
A stalemate ensued for much of the second half with Douttas kicking their first goal 16 minutes into the final term
however they weren’t able to stage a last quarter comeback
Tayla Hart-Aluni and Bronwyn Peddley made the most of their opportunities early with one goal each
while Kerri Magee put in an impressive performance to help her side get over the line
Jayla Rutley provided the major spark for her side kicking their only goal while Stephanie Mitchell and Aleesha Hobbs fought hard all day
Moonee Valley will next travel to Oak Park to take on the Kangaroos while Douttas will host Westmeadows
with both sides needing a win to give themselves a chance of playing finals footy
Oak Park have recorded their eleventh win of the year defeating Westmeadows by 43 points at Willowbrook Reserve
The win closes the gap on ladder leaders Hillside
however the reigning premiers still sit a game and a considerable amount of percentage behind their rivals
The win was set up in the first quarter with the Kangaroos booting three first-quarter goals which never gave the Tigers a chance
Alex Quigley continued her dominant season with another three goals to take her season tally to 35 from 12 games
while Tamsyn Kirk and Rhianna Nunn continued their superb seasons
Courteney Munn was the shining light kicking her third goal of the year
while Ruby Smith and Gemma Wright showed plenty of encouraging signs
Oak Park will be hoping to put a dent into Moonee Valley’s finals hopes when they host the Fog at JP Fawkner Reserve
while Westmeadows will take on a fired up Essendon Doutta Stars at Buckley Park
West Coburg recorded an easy 60 point win over Rupertswood in a result that further cements their position at the top of the ladder
The Burgers would be pleased with the result as they were able to control the match for its entirety after starting the game with six unanswered goals
Forward Omar Saad kicked five goals for the second week in a row taking his season tally to 45 goals which sees him sit at fourth spot on the leaderboard
Tom Baravi was another of West Coburg’s notable players on the day as he continued the amazing form he has been in this season
Rupertswood would be somewhat pleased that they were able to stop a huge blowout like the last time they faced West Coburg
They would also take great heart from the fact they were able to outscore the top team in the division in the second quarter
Rupertswood will face Craigieburn next week
Moonee Valley claimed a massive win in the context of their season as they defeated Craigieburn by 23 points
The victory sees the Valley move a game clear of Rupertswood getting closer to escaping from the threat of relegation
Harry Fry was among the best on ground scoring three goals for the Valley while racking up plenty of possessions
as Luke Denny was also prominent around the ground in the win
Craigieburn’s bad form continued this weekend with the Eagles slumping to eight losses in a row after a promising start to the year
Craigieburn next faces Rupertswood in a must-win clash for either side
Hillside overcame a strong Tullamarine challenge to claim a 24-point victory at Shark Park
Hillside didn’t make it easy for themselves kicking a whopping 23 behinds to go with their 11 goals
but were eventually able to kick away from Tullamarine after trailing by a point at three quarter time
Star forward Josh Covelli was once again dominant in front of goals booting five majors which takes his season tally to 82 goals
making a 100-goal season not out of the question
Lachlan Henson was also among the best for the Sharks continuing his great form in recent weeks
Tullamarine showed shades of their previous meeting putting up a valiant performance
matching it with the Sharks for the first three quarters before falling away in the last quarter
Tulla faces Oak Park next weekend in an important clash for either side's finals hopes
Oak Park recorded a giant win over Keilor Park on the weekend
defeating the last-placed team by 74 points
eight points clear of sixth place as they look to continue to build on their great recent form
Kane O’Halloran had a huge day out in front of goal scoring seven goals in a best-on-ground performance
while Paul Pascu was also impressive being crucial in Oak Park’s dominant win
Keilor Park plays West Coburg next weekend
It was another dominant win by Maribyrnong Park who thrashed Roxburgh Park by 130 points on the weekend
The win was Marby’s third 100 point win in a row and it sends a huge statement to the rest of the finals contenders that Marby Park aren’t messing around
James Kayrooz (seven goals) and Samuel Calleri (four goals) were immense up front for Marby Park as the side piled on 24 goals in the match
while the backline held up incredibly well only conceding three goals
The Magpies started the day reasonably well with the first two goals of the game
but it was all downhill from there as they were thoroughly outplayed for the rest of the match
Roxburgh Park will have next week off with the bye
The Jets started positively before the game was called off before half time due to an injury
Burnside Heights claimed a huge win before finals
defeating the third place Airport West by 50 points in what was a big statement to the rest of the teams
The Bears were both efficient up front kicking nine goals from 11 scoring shots
as well as well set up down back letting in just the one goal
Forward Bella Negri was impressive booting three goals
while skipper Kayla Ravanello led from the front also kicking three majors and taking her season tally to 33 goals
Airport West on the other hand will need a lot of improvement if they are to go deep in the finals series
being thoroughly outclassed again by the Bears
Airport West will face Keilor Park at John McMahon Reserve in the elimination final next weekend
while Burnside Heights play in the qualifying final against Greenvale at Lakeside Reserve
Tullamarine have finished off their season on a positive note comfortably beating Keilor Park by 39 points
Tulla finished the season in fifth position with just the four wins but would be delighted with their final match of the season as it gives them something to build towards for next year
Demons captain Tricia Devine was once again among their most important and impactful players as she capped a brilliant season with two goals
It was a really disappointing result for Keilor Park who now turn their attention towards the finals next week when they meet Airport West in an elimination final
Taylors Lakes claimed a convincing win in difficult conditions beating Northern Saints by 62 points
The Lakers were slow out of the blocks as they kicked just one goal in the first quarter and trailed at quarter time
strong second and third quarters cemented the win as they continue to look like the team to beat in the upcoming finals series
Lachlan Rayner and Aaron Vendramini were among Taylors Lakes' most impactful contributors in the victory
The Saints struggled in the wet weather scoring just three goals for the match
with two of those coming in the last quarter when the result was a foregone conclusion
The loss does put a bit of a dent in their final aspirations but with their main competitors also losing
Northern Saints will play East Sunbury next week
Hadfield claimed a hard-fought win over local rivals Coburg Districts by 12 points
The Hawks fought their way back into the match after trailing by over four goals early on in the first half
The win puts Hadfield just six points outside the top four and if they continue their form from this match
they may have a sneaky chance of playing finals
Jake and Zac Polizzi were key players in Hadfields' come from behind victory as their big second halves turned the tide of the match
It was another frustrating loss for the Districts who would be bitterly disappointed at having lost a match against a lower-placed opponent after being up by a considerable margin
The loss means that their finals chances have suffered a serious dent as they will now have to win their remaining games and hope results go their way
Coburg Districts have next week off with the bye
while Hadfield comes up against Sunbury Kangaroos
Glenroy recorded a nail biting victory over Sunbury Kangaroos by just two points
Glenroy were trailing by a goal at the final change
but a big last quarter saw them just get over the line in a game that went down to the wire
Aaron Kite led the charge for Glenroy in front of the big stick slotting three goals
while teammate Zac Smith was also one of the main contributors to the victory
Sunbury Kangaroos have now slumped to four consecutive losses as a promising start to the year seems to be going astray
The Kangaroos would be kicking themselves as inaccuracy in front of goals cost them in the end
while Glenroy will take on Burnside Heights
Burnside Heights claimed a massive victory over East Sunbury on the weekend defeating the last-placed side by 118 points
The win sees Burnside move back up to top of the ladder based on their percentage
Daniel Hovey (five goals) and Nick Gregson (four goals) were among the most prominent players for the Bears as they cruised to an easy win
East Sunbury suffered another disheartening loss on the weekend going down by 100 points for the third week in a row while only scoring a single goal
Coburg Districts sailed to a comfortable win over East Sunbury by 32 points despite the wet and muddy conditions of the ground
While the Districts struggled to score goals themselves
they were able to keep their opponent scoreless while the four goals they did score proved to be enough
Skipper Olivia Woods was once again the best on ground in the last game before finals and has shown no signs of slowing as the season reaches its peak
Amy Ronchi was also noticeable kicking two of her team's four goals
East Sunbury’s valiant season has now come to an end
while Coburg Districts face the Sunbury Lions in a qualifying final at Lakeside Reserve this weekend
Roxburgh Park have ended Taylors Lakes' finals dreams with a 17-point win at Lionheart Reserve
Roxy are going into finals in brilliant form with seven wins from their last eight games and another month of great football like this could see them cause an upset and take the premiership home
Forward Jameson Best’s three goals ended up being the difference between the two sides as the Lakers struggled to contain her when Roxy went forward
Taylors Lakes' season has come to an end in heart-breaking fashion as they missed out on a spot in the finals due to percentage
They would be proud of their efforts throughout the season and in their final game as they matched it with Roxburgh Park for the majority of the game
Roxburgh Park takes on the Sunbury Kangaroos in an elimination final at John McMahon Reserve
The Sunbury Lions finished off the home and away season with a 20-point win over their cross town rivals Sunbury Kangaroos
The Lions were particularly good down back as they kept the Kangaroos goalless for the entire match in the wet conditions
and while they struggled to score goals of their own at different stages
the three goals they scored were more than enough to see them ease to victory
The Sunbury Kangaroos will have their work cut out for them in the lead up to their first final next weekend as they were unable to kick a goal in the low-scoring encounter
Although partially due to the wet conditions
their inability to score will be worrisome for the Kangaroos going forward
The Sunbury Kangaroos take on Roxburgh Park in an elimination final next weekend
while Sunbury Lions will play Coburg Districts in the qualifying final

STRATHMORE COMMUNITY BANK DIVISION ONE ELIMINATION FINAL
Aberfeldie hosts Avondale Heights at Clifton Park in a match that the Abers will need to win if they are to finish in the top three
Aberfeldie recorded a five-point win over the third placed Strathmore last weekend
putting them within four points of taking their spot on the ladder
While it is still unlikely for this to happen
Aberfeldie will be determined to win all their remaining games just in case
The two sides last played each other in a thriller back on ANZAC Day
Aberfeldie came out on top by three points with Ben Ronke (four goals) and(Karl Brown (three goals) instrumental in the victory
Avondale Heights are now officially confirmed to finish in last place and be relegated
having won just the one game so far and will be looking to add a couple more consolation wins or competitive performances before they drop down to Division One at the season's end
Greenvale will take on East Keilor at Greenvale Recreation Reserve in what is a must win match for the hosts if they are to lock in a finals spot
There are just two points separating Greenvale in fifth spot from Airport West in sixth and as a result
When these two teams last met it was Greenvale who came out on top by one-point in a high-scoring thriller
Ryan Townsend had a best on ground performance for Greenvale in that game
while Lachlan Smart booted six goals for East Keilor
East Keilor are currently sitting in second last position on the ladder
and while relegation is off the table they would still like to secure some more wins and disrupt the top five
Airport West takes on Keilor at Hansen Reserve in a match that the hosts will be looking to cause an upset in as they continue to hunt for a spot in the finals
The Eagles claimed a big win over fifth place Greenvale last weekend to keep their finals chances alive
their run home isn’t easy as they play both top two teams in their last three matches
meaning they will likely need to claim at least one upset to make the finals if the Jets win this weekend
The last time the two sides came up against each other was back in Round 2 when Keilor were victorious by 51 points
Nick O’Kearney and James Bailey starred for Keilor in that match and as a result
Airport West will need to find a way to shut them down this time around
Keilor go into this match as heavy favourites having not lost a match yet this season
have a shaky game a couple weeks ago which will give Airport West hope for an upset
while also meaning Keilor will need to make sure they are ready for a hungry Airport West
Deer Park will battle it out against Strathmore at John McLeod Reserve
the visitors will be hunting a win to try and lock in a top three finish
The last time the two sides met it was Strathmore who were victorious coming out on top by 26 points
Trent Dumont starred in that match and will be someone Deer Park will pay close attention to this time around
Strathmore had a disappointing loss to Aberfeldie last week going down by five points
The result means that Strathmore will want to win all their remaining games to make sure Aberfeldie doesn’t overtake them on the ladder for the double chance
Pascoe Vale will face off against Essendon Doutta Stars at Raeburn Reserve in a match that is relatively low stakes
Pascoe Vale have almost locked in a top two finish
as they pretty much only need one more victory to make it official
The Panthers will be aiming to get that done this week as they look to build as much momentum as possible before they hit the finals in three weeks time
These two teams met back in Round 1 in a game that was easily won by Pascoe Vale with a margin of 67 points
Douttas currently sit in seventh spot on the ladder and will be looking to finish off the year as strongly as possible
Oak Park takes on Rupertswood at JP Fawkner Reserve in a match the visitors will be desperate to win to avoid relegation
Oak Park go into this match with no pressure on them as they have now secured a finals berth and will instead be using their last two matches to build some momentum before heading into the finals
The two sides met last back in Round 4 in a match that Oak Park won by 13 points
Anthony DeLorenzi was huge in that game for the Oakers kicking three crucial goals and gathering plenty of possessions
Rupertswood are currently second last and in the relegation zone
They will know that a loss this week will almost certainly mean they will be relegated down to Division Two next season and as a result
will be using all their energy across the last two weeks to survive the drop
Roxburgh Park hosts St Albans at Lakeside Reserve in a match the hosts would like to win to save them from the threat of relegation
Roxburgh Park are currently just one win above the relegation zone and will know that at least one win in these last two games will make them 100 per cent safe
while a loss will leave their survival up in the air
When these sides last met it was St Albans who came out on top by 21 points
if not for bad kicking the Saints would’ve won by a lot more and as such
Roxy will need to find a way to shut down the Saints attacking prowess this time around
The Saints have very little pressure on them going into this game as they are almost certain to finish in fourth position now
The focus for St Albans now will just be to head into finals in as strong a form as possible and bounce back from a big loss
Tullamarine will face off against Craigieburn in a battle for sixth spot at Leo Dineen Reserve
Tullamarine are officially out of the finals race now having lost to Oak Park last week
They will now be turning their attention to holding on to sixth spot which is the highest position they can finish
These two sides met back in Round 9 in a match where Tulla came out victorious by 22 points
Joel Flanigan was huge in that match scoring five goals and will be someone Craigieburn will be looking to shut down this time around
Craigieburn secured their first win since Round 6 last week
defeating Rupertswood by 26 points to officially secure a spot in Division One for next year
The Eagles will now have their sights set on finishing as high as possible on the ladder which is sixth place by beating Tulla this weekend
Maribyrnong Park will battle it out against West Coburg at Monk Oval in what looms as a potential grand final preview
Marby Park have been arguably the most in-form team in Division One having not lost since all the way back in Round 4
Their last seven matches have all been wins with a margin of over 70 points
West Coburg are also on a long winning streak having only lost the one match this year all the way back in Round 2
West Coburg will need a win to cement a first place finish while also potentially gaining a psychological advantage over Marby going into the finals
These two sides played each other back in Round 1 of this season
in a match that was won by West Coburg with a margin of 16 points
the match should be even more thrilling as the two best sides of the season so far go head to head
Moonee Valley plays Keilor Park at Ormond Park in a match that could see the hosts officially become safe from relegation
Moonee Valley currently sit in ninth spot just outside the relegation zone
They will know that a win this week over last placed Keilor Park will almost certainly secure them a position in Division One next season
Moonee Valley were victorious by 30 points
Charles Aitken starred in that game for the Valley kicking two goals and gathering up plenty of disposals
This week's match is Keilor Park’s last of the season and last in Division One for some time as they are confirmed to be relegated
they are just playing for pride and will be looking to finish their season off on a positive note
Coburg Districts will take on Westmeadows at Cole Reserve in a must-win clash for the hosts if they are to keep their finals hopes alive
A disappointing loss to Hadfield two weeks ago has made Coburg Districts' finals chances harder as they now need to win their two remaining games and hope other results fall their way
will just be focusing on what they can achieve which is to win this weekend
The last time these two sides faced each other was back in Round 2 in a low scoring thriller that saw Westmeadows come out on top by five points
It was a match that the Districts probably should’ve won but didn’t due to their inaccurate goalkicking
Westmeadows go into this week's match with no pressure as they can finish no lower or no higher than third place on the ladder
It’ll be all about building momentum for the Tigers in their last two matches before finals
Sunbury Kangaroos hosts the Northern Saints at Eric Boardman Reserve in a match the visitors need to win to hold onto their top four position
The Kangaroos are playing their final game of the season this week with the percentage differential to the top four too big to wrangle
The last time these two teams met was back in Round 10
where the Saints were victorious by 66 points
Khoder Taleb (seven goals) and Nick Bruno (five goals) were huge in that match and as such
the Kangaroos will need to shut those two down this weekend if they are to have any chance
The Northern Saints know that all they need to do is win their last two games of the season and they will play finals
Hadfield plays East Sunbury at Martin Reserve in what should be a relatively straightforward win for the hosts
While Hadfield’s chances of playing finals are now over
they will still be looking for some consolation wins to end the season on a high note
This week's match should prove the perfect game for the Hawks to claim a big win before the season ends
Hadfield played East Sunbury back in Round 7 this season in a match the Hawks won by 59 points
Sam Godden kicked four goals in that match in a man of the match performance from the Hadfield star
East Sunbury have nothing to play for but pride this weekend
as they look to avoid going a full season without a win
Glenroy will face off against Taylors Lakes at Sewell Reserve this weekend
When these two sides last met it was Taylors Lakers who were victorious by 38 points
Ben Weightman starred for the Lakers in that game
Taylors Lakes will go into this week's match attempting to regain the top spot as Burnside have the bye this weekend
The Lakers will know a final showdown for top spot awaits them in the last round so they will be looking to take as much momentum as possible into that clash
Deer Park and Avondale Heights will both finish their seasons when they face off at Canning Reserve
It's been a very difficult year for the Heights which has seen their coach Paddy Byrne sacked and their time in Premier Division come to an end after they picked up only the one win back in Round 1 against Greenvale
Deer Park have had an up and down first season in Premier Division which has seen them win six games including an upset win over an in-form Airport West last week
When the two sides last met back in Round 7
it was Jamie Madigan’s side who came away with the four points after they defeated Avondale Heights by 48 points thanks to an eight-goal final term to help seal the victory
Danko Bzenic will be one to watch on Saturday for Avondale Heights
The forward has been a shining light for the Heights in a difficult year kicking 26 goals from 17 games in 2024
Aberfeldie will host Greenvale at Clifton Park in a game that has huge finals ramifications and will likely shape the finals
After Greenvale and Airport West both lost last weekend
the Jets held their spot in the top five but are in desperate need of a win if they want to stay there
If Greenvale come out on top they are guaranteed finals footy
however a loss and an Airport West win will see them watching finals footy from the sidelines
will stay in fourth spot with an elimination final ahead
it was Aberfeldie who came away with the victory
For the Jets to win and qualify for finals footy
Josh Porter will need to step up once again
The forward has been in fine form in recent weeks kicking six goals in his last two appearances against Keilor and East Keilor
but was held goalless the last time these two sides met
If the mercurial forward can have another day out it could see his side’s season extend by at least one week
Strathmore will be hoping to make it three wins in a row in the lead up to another finals series when they take on East Keilor at Lebanon Reserve
Saturday’s match doesn’t mean much in terms of finals ramifications with the Mores set to play Pascoe Vale in a qualifying final next week
while East Keilor have failed to back up last year's finals appearance and have slipped to ninth on the ladder
When the two sides last came up against each other back in Round 1
it was Strathmore who picked up their first win since last year's preliminary final
winning by 73 points thanks to four goals each from Amin Naim
With the VFL season now over for many clubs
Strathmore could be boosted by the return of Matthew Foley
If all three superstars take the field for the home side on Saturday
it could be a difficult day for the Cougars
Keilor will be hoping to finish off the home and away season on a positive note when they take on Essendon Doutta Stars at Nipper Jordan Oval
It’s been another almost perfect season for Mick McGuane’s men in their hunt for back-to-back premierships with the Blues picking up 16 wins from their 17 matches and are two games clear on top of the ladder
Douttas have avoided relegation once again but have slipped to eighth on the ladder and haven’t won since upsetting Aberfeldie back in Round 14
When the two sides last met back in Round 9
winning by 147 points thanks to 12 goals in the third term
Chris Kosmas will be one to keep an eye on at Nipper Jordan Oval in Saturday
Kosmas' focus will now be on winning another premiership for the Blues
The midfielder has been in fine form for the Blues this year with 28 goals from just 12 games and another big game on Saturday could be a sign of things to come
Pascoe Vale will host Airport West at Raeburn Reserve in a season-defining games for the Eagles
After a stunning turnaround from a 0-7 start to upsetting the reigning premiers two weeks ago and looking like charging towards a finals berth
the Eagles slipped up last week against Deer Park and have left themselves with a lot to do against Pascoe Vale on Saturday
A win wouldn’t guarantee the men in green and white a finals berth with Brent Taylor’s men needing Greenvale to lose to Aberfeldie on Saturday as well if they want their season to continue
Pascoe Vale are certain to finish in second spot and play Strathmore in a qualifying final
it was the Panthers that handed the Eagles their seventh loss for the year
winning by 64 points thanks to eight goals from Ahmed Saad
It'll take another big effort from the Eagles
The finals start with West Coburg and Hillside kicking off Strathmore Community Bank Division One action at Greenvale Recreation Reserve this Saturday
The Burgers go into the finals series in good form having won their final regular season match by 108 points and four out of their last five by over 60 points
The two sides faced off twice in the season
once in Round 2 where Hillside were victorious in a thrilling match that was decided by just three points
and also in Round 13 where West Coburg got revenge
From these past games it is clear that if both teams are at their best
Hillside will go into the qualifying final having lost their last game of the season to Maribyrnong Park by 50 points
While this doesn’t sound great for their form and confidence
they did a better job against Marby than what West Coburg did the week prior
Josh Covelli will be the one to watch for a number of reasons with the star forward two goals away from triple figures
but he was also the one to break the game open in the first meeting between these two sides
He proved unstoppable in the final quarter and lifted the Sharks to a stirring win
The winner will meet Marby for a spot in the decider
with the loser to face the winner out of the eliminator
St Albans will take on Oak Park in an elimination final at Salesian College Oval on Sunday
St Albans go into this weekend's final with a far superior home and away record as they lost just the four matches across the season and have won four of their last five leading into this week's match
The two sides faced off twice in the home and away season with St Albans coming out on top both times
First in Round 5 by 39 points and more recently last week where the Saints won by 22 points
Josh Carter scored four goals and is someone Oak Park will need to pay close attention to this weekend
Oak Park head into the match as underdogs as they finished fifth on the ladder after the regular season and are yet to defeat a team ranked higher than them
the Oakers have won six of their last seven games and head into the finals in good touch despite a loss to the Saints last week
The Division Two finals kick off this Saturday with Taylors Lakes taking on Burnside Heights at Salesian College Oval for a spot in the grand final
Taylors Lakes finished the season in first place with an almost flawless home and away record which saw them lose just one game
The Lakers' success has been down to their incredible offensive abilities as they are the highest scoring team in the division
The two teams have faced off twice during the season
the first time was in Round 11 where Taylors Lakes were victorious by four points in a thriller
The second time was just last week and was a 15-point win for the Lions
Luke Nappi scored four goals for Taylors Lakes in their most recent meeting and will be one Burnside will look to keep quiet this weekend
Burnside Heights have enjoyed a great season so far as well finishing in second place with just the three losses
two of those losses came against Taylors Lakes and they remain the team they will have to overcome if they are to win the premiership
The replenished tall stocks have been damaging for the Bears this year and will need them to fire again and stretch the Taylors Lakes defenders
Bears leading goal kicker Daniel Hovey was held goalless last week
and will be one Cole Harvey will need to stamp his authority on the game
Westmeadows and Northern Saints will battle it out in an elimination final at Greenvale Recreation Reserve on Sunday for a place in the preliminary final
Westmeadows head into Sunday's final as the higher ranked team having finished third
due to a shaky finish to the season they aren’t as firm favourites as they may have looked a few weeks ago
the Tigers recorded just one win as well as two losses and a draw
Both teams have faced off against each other twice this year with Westmeadows winning the first encounter in Round 4 by 39 points
before the Northern Saints hit back in Round 11 defeating Westmeadows by 24 points
The Northern Saints' last four games of the season were enough for them to secure a finals berth but were not without some shaky moments as well
The Saints won two of their last four while also drawing their last match of the season against Glenroy
Rain played a factor in their last meeting with tough
contested footy playing more in the Saints' favour with Westy damaging when able to run
Section Road will be conducive to that footy but with rain potentially around
we'll have to wait and see how this one plays out
Avondale Heights will host the undefeated Keilor at Canning Reserve in what looms as a potentially one-sided affair
Keilor are coming off a 184-point demolition over East Keilor which saw Keilor score over 200 points while conceding just 38
Last week's result mixed with the fact that Keilor haven’t lost a game all season
point to an easy victory for the reigning premiers who will no doubt be on the hunt for another massive win
Avondale Heights on the other hand are coming off a 48-point loss to Deer Park as they continue to fall down the ladder
Winless since a victory over Greenvale in Round 1
Avondale will be desperate to put forward a competitive showing
Greenvale will battle it out against an avenged Pascoe Vale at Greenvale Recreation Reserve
The Jets lost a thriller last week against Strathmore by three points and while the loss will certainly hurt
they will take confidence from the fact they won the second half against a team that is in the hunt for a deep finals run
Greenvale will sense a massive opportunity to defeat another flag contender as they look to hand Pascoe Vale their second loss of the season
Pascoe Vale were able bounce back in near perfect fashion against Airport West after Keilor smashed them the week prior
Ahmed Saad was instrumental in the win kicking eight goals as the Panthers cruised to a comfortable victory that reminded the comp the devastating brand of football they're capable of
Deer Park will be playing Essendon Doutta Stars at John McLeod Reserve this Saturday
Deer Park recorded their second win of the season after a brilliant match against Avondale Heights propelled them up to seventh on the ladder
Majak Daw was influential in the victory booting 11 goals in what was one of the best individual performances of the year so far
Douttas will have to find a way to shut him down if they are to win which will be no easy task
Essendon Doutta Stars were not able to overcome their local rivals in Aberfeldie on the weekend going down by 17 points
While Bailey Ryan impressed kicking five majors
it wasn’t enough to create a win for Doutta who will need to take these wins if they're to remain in the finals mix
East Keilor will take on the winless Airport West at Overland Reserve this weekend
Both sides will see this match as a massive chance for not only a win
but to turn the fortune of their season around
A win for East Keilor would see them move 12 points clear from the bottom of the division putting them in a comfortable spot to avoid relegation
The win would also allow them to rebound immediately from their 184-point thrashing at the hands of Keilor which would certainly have dented their confidence
It’s been a long season for Airport West who are still searching for a first win after seven matches
A win would move them off the bottom of the ladder providing Avondale Heights lose as well
but more importantly it would remove the pressure of worrying about when and where the first win will come from
Keilor Park will play Moonee Valley on Saturday at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve to kick off Division One action
Both sides are coming off 100-point losses as they languish at the bottom of the ladder
As such a win would be massive for the two teams as they look to avoid relegation
but this week’s game might just be their best chance yet to get that first victory as they face the second-last team on the ladder at home
Moonee Valley will be desperate for a win to turn their fortunes around after another big loss on the weekend
A win for the Valley would see them move eight points clear off the bottom while also catching up to the three teams ahead of them on the ladder who are all on eight points currently
St Albans will line up against Rupertswood for the second time this season with the match to be played at Kings Park Reserve
Last time the two teams met it was an easy 78-point triumph for St Albans
A 47-point win over Tullamarine last week will set St Albans up nicely as they look to defeat Rupertswood in both encounters this year
Josh Carter was dominant for St Albans in the win booting five goals
He is someone Rupertswood will know is dangerous after he kicked four against them earlier in the year and as such
they will be attempting to stop his influence over the match
Rupertswood are coming off a hard-fought four-point win over Roxburgh Park which saw both teams pushed to their limits
The Sharks will be hoping to carry some winning momentum to cause an upset
Tullamarine will face off against Roxburgh Park at Leo Dineen Reserve
Tullamarine’s season hasn’t been ideal so far as they have only won two games from their first six and are coming off a 47-point loss to St Albans last week
will see this match against the lower-ranked Roxburgh Park as a big chance to get some momentum going while also escaping the lower part of the ladder
Roxy have only won two games so far this year and will see this week's game as a huge opportunity for a third win
The Magpies would be bitterly disappointed with last week's result going down by four points to Rupertswood
a match against another team on the bottom half of the table is a seemingly perfect opportunity for redemption and a way to move even further from bottom-two territory
Maribyrnong Park will battle it out against Hillside at Monk Oval in what looms as one of the more enticing matchups of the round
Marby will be fresh off the bye as they look to be the first team to topple Hillside this season
Marby’s start to life in Division One after being relegated last year has been solid with four wins and two losses
Hillside's season couldn’t have gone better so far with seven wins from seven games – the Sharks have cemented themselves early on as the premiership favourites
Star forward Josh Covelli has been crucial to their success this season and that was no different last weekend against Keilor Park where he booted an amazing 13 goals
which now brings his season tally to 49 goals from seven games as he eclipsed the 800 career goal mark
The Lions will be without Lachie Plowman through suspension which is a costly omission
West Coburg hosts Craigieburn in an important clash for both teams at Shore Reserve
West Coburg are coming off a massive win over Moonee Valley by 126-points
Omar Saad was instrumental in the win slotting eight goals
while Ruairi Cleary was also important kicking six goals
The Burgers enjoy a range of contributors in front of goal and will be an area of focus for Craigieburn on the small Shore Reserve
The Eagles were defeated easily last weekend by Oak Park in a match where they only kicked six goals – which doesn’t look great next to West Coburg who just kicked 28 in a match
proved in past matches they have the potential to pile on goals when they are on song
If they bring their A-game against West Coburg
then they will believe they can take another scalp of a finals side
be without John Bellino through suspension
Northern Saints are hosting Coburg Districts at Charles Mutton Reserve this weekend to kick off Division Two action
The two teams last met in Round 1 when Districts came out victorious in a hard-fought contest by just seven points
The Saints will be looking to flip the script at home and breathe some new life into their otherwise disappointing season
While they were once again in the contest for the entire match
the Saints couldn’t get over the line again taking their season record to one win and five losses – a record that very easily could’ve been mirrored with a little more luck
Coburg Districts have had a similar season so far as they have also not had much luck in close finishes
with all four of their losses this season being within a few goals
will go into the match with the confidence and momentum of winning a close game last weekend over Glenroy
and also from beating Northern Saints earlier in the year
Sunbury Kangaroos will play Glenroy at Eric Boardman Reserve
Sunbury Kangaroos lost their second game in a row since the bye as they went down to Burnside Heights by 24 points last week
a win against Glenroy is a must if they are too prove they can play finals and contend for the flag this year as many predicted preseason
Glenroy will be ruing some missed opportunities in their game against Coburg Districts last week in which they lost by 10-points
The Roys will no doubt come out firing sensing they have the ability to upset the top teams in the competition
Hadfield will take on the undefeated Burnside Heights at Martin Reserve
Last time these sides played was in Round 1 where Hadfield was soundly defeated by 94 points
The Hawks recorded a 59-point win over East Sunbury last weekend in what was a welcome win for a team that has had a mixed bag of results so far
While the Hawks will have hope they can cause an upset
it will take their absolute best and then some to defeat this formidable Bears outfit
Burnside are 7-0 this season after another relatively convincing win last weekend
The Bears defeated Sunbury Kangaroos by four goals in a match they largely controlled from start to finish
Daniel Hovey was particularly impressive proving a dominant force up forward as he booted nine goals in the victory
Westmeadows will battle it out against the undefeated Taylors Lakes at Willowbrook Reserve in what could be a belter
The Tigers should be fresh off their bye as they look to be the first to defeat Taylors Lakes this season
Westmeadows' greatest strength this season has been their defence with Burnside Heights being the only team so far who has been able to overcome it
As the Lions are a particularly good attacking side
the Tigers will certainly need to be at their defensive best if they are to take the four points
Taylors Lakes' season couldn’t have gone much better so far with six wins from six games leaving them in a position where they look like definite premiership contenders
recent results have proven they still have the talent out on the park
One important skill the Lakers seem to have picked up is the ability to win close games as two of their last three games have been decided by less than 10 points and could easily have gone against them
They may be counting on that skill this weekend as the match against Westmeadows looms as a potential thriller
easily accounting for Avondale Heights to the tune of 126 points
The win makes it three triple-digit wins in a row for the Blues who now sit a game and 175 per cent clear of Pascoe Vale on top of the ladder
Avondale Heights did bring the heat early in the contest and showed plenty of promising signs
however Keilor put the foot down after halftime kicking 19 goals to four
Coach Mick McGuane said his side lacked execution by hand and foot early due to the Heights pressure but corrected in the second half
The reigning premiers once again had plenty of contributors across the ground
however it was Cody Brand who stood out with five goals along with Harvey Wilkes who kicked four
Josh Honey backed up last week’s strong performance with another impressive display
while Chris Kosmas was also among his side’s best players
Jackson Robb continues to lead from the front for the Heights while Tristian Wood and Scott Russell put in decent performances on a difficult day for the home side
Keilor will host Essendon Doutta Stars while Avondale Heights will travel to Hansen Reserve to take on Airport West
Pascoe Vale have grinded their way to their seventh win for the year
beating Greenvale by 30 points at Section Road
The Panthers got the jump on Greenvale in the first quarter kicking the first five goals which proved to be the difference on the day
and Matthew Watson would’ve all pleased coach Leigh Tudor with two goals each
while Paul Ahern and Daman Aujla were superb for the Panthers in the five-goal win
Josh Porter continued his strong form for the Jets kicking four goals
while Ben Speight added another three goals
Greenvale will host Aberfeldie fresh off their King’s Birthday clash with Strathmore while Pascoe Vale will play East Keilor at home
Deer Park have made it back-to-back wins for the first time in EDFL Premier Division defeating Essendon Doutta Stars by 19 points at John McLeod Reserve
Deer Park’s win now leaves them level on points with Douttas and two games clear of bottom of the ladder
The Stars were disappointing for much of the day kicking only three goals in only the first
however a four-goal third quarter gave Douttas a bit of hope heading into the final term
Majak Daw backed up last week’s best-on-ground performance with another three goals while Kier Bol
and Joshua Cooper all put in strong performances for the Lions
Youngster Liam Ryan played one of his best games in Premier Division for the Stars while Lewis Downie and Dalton Comito did their best to keep the Stars in the contest
Deer Park will return to Windy Hill for the first time since their 2023 Division One premiership when they take on Strathmore in two weeks time
while it doesn’t get any easier for Essendon Doutta Stars when they travel to Keilor to take on the reigning premiers
Airport West have recorded one of their best wins in recent memory
defeating East Keilor by 92 points at Overland Reserve
The Eagles had failed to fire a shot in 2024 despite plenty of pre-season hype
however Saturday’s emphatic win lifts the Eagles off the bottom of the ladder for the first time in 2024
Despite giving up the first goal of the game
the Eagles quickly clicked into gear kicking 17 of the next 18 goals to give themselves an unassailable three quarter time lead for the first time this season
The Cougars did restore some pride in the final term kicking four goals
however it proved to be too little too late
Luca Muratore kicked five goals while Anthony Aloi kicked four goals as Airport West's most prolific forwards
Corey Barbaro is proving to be a solid piece of recruiting by the Eagles with another three goals
while Matthew Hanson and Ben Nelson were also able to hit the scoreboard with two goals each
Mark Nicholls was one of the Cougars' best kicking two goals
and Michael Dalrymple all kicked one goal each
The Eagles will be looking to record back-to-back wins when they take on Avondale Heights
while East Keilor will be looking to bounce back when they play Pascoe Vale
Moonee Valley are back on the winner's list with a comfortable 30-point victory against Keilor Park
The Valley led at every break and despite the margin being within nine points at three quarter time
they were able to dominate the last quarter to record a much-needed win moving them eight points clear of the bottom of the ladder
It was another bitterly disappointing day for Keilor Park who are still winless after eight matches so far this season
As they now sit two games clear on the bottom of the ladder
their chances of returning to Division Two are looking ominous
Keilor Park have a chance to reset with a couple of weeks off while Moonee Valley will host St Albans
St Albans' impressive run of form continued as they demolished Rupertswood by 104 points to keep their position in the top three safe
The match was over almost as soon as it began as the Saints scored eight goals to one in the first term which practically put the contest to bed
Jake Galea was mightily impressive booting seven goals as Adem Asani also joined in on the goalkicking party slotting five in game 400
It was another tough day at the office for Rupertswood who now sit second last on the ladder
There were some promising signs late for Rupertswood as they outscored St Albans in the final quarter

The win moves the demons into sixth spot on the ladder and one game outside the top five
however have a considerable amount of percentage to make up over the coming weeks if they want to feature in September action
The sides could hardly be separated in the first half with Tulla taking a two-point lead into the main break before kicking six of the last eight goals of the match to record their third victory for the year
Joel Flanigan had his best game for the year and kicked his first bag of five for the season while Matthew O’Dwyer and Tom Jackson both stepped up to help get their side over the line
Jake Carlisle returned to form with two goals after a quiet fortnight in front of the big sticks before the weekend off
while Jesse Davies had a solid game with two goals in his return for the Eagles
Tullamarine will be back at home next week when they take on Rupertswood while Craigieburn will host St Albans
Hillside have fought off a late Roxburgh Park fightback to win their eighth game of the year by five points at Hillside Recreation Reserve
Despite going into the game in first and sixth spot respectively
the Sharks were made to fight hard all day to overcome a gallant Roxburgh Park outfit
The Magpies led at half time by nine points before Hillside piled on five straight goals to take a three-goal lead into the final change
The game looked over when Jackson McMenamin put the Sharks 22 points up eight minutes into the final term however Roxburgh Park kicked the final three goals to give themselves a sniff with only a few minutes to play
However it just wasn’t enough to cause a huge upset
Josh Covelli was the main target for Hillside and kicked another four goals to take his season tally to 58 from only nine games
while Fort Caruso and Jeremy Hayes both had strong games that helped get Hillside over the line
Cooper McPharlane had a solid outing for the Magpies with three goals
while Teronne Potter and Scott Poynter were handy with two goals each
The Sharks will have their first bye for the season next week before travelling to Sunbury to take on Rupertswood
while Roxburgh park will be back at home against Moonee Valley
West Coburg have continued their strong form defeating Oak Park by 92 points at JP Fawkner Reserve
The damage was done in the second term with West Coburg piling on seven goals to take a 47-point lead into the main break
Ibby Taha kicked a bag of seven goals while Ruari Cleary and Omar Saad continued their impressive 2024 seasons with four and three goals respectively
Despite Oak Park only having two goal kickers
Kane O’Halloran had a day out despite the loss with five goals while Max Gleeson and Jedd Taylor both had solid games
West Coburg will be looking to move to the top of the ladder when they travel to Keilor Park
while Oak Park will play Maribyrnong Park for the second time this year at Monk Oval
Moonee Valley and St Albans have played out one of the highest-scoring encounters of the year which saw the Saints come out 34-point victors
The match looked almost over a half time when St Albans took a comfortable 25-point lead into half time
however Moonee Valley made the most of the strong breeze during the third term to kick seven goals to level the scores heading into the final change
It wasn’t enough with St Albans kicking eight goals in the final term to run over the top of the Valley to record their seventh victory for the year
Mason Dipetta continued his fine form with another five goals while Josh Carter kicked three for the Saints
Atu Bosenavulagi put in another strong showing along with the skipper Jack Sims
Captain Bevan Newell continues to lead from the front for the Valley with another three goals while Ben Ryan and Costa Detsikas also kicked three goals and showed plenty of positive signs
The Valley will next travel to Roxburgh Park to take on the Magpies while St Albans will travel to Craigieburn
Maribyrnong Park has sent a warning to the rest of the competition with one of the most dominant performances of the year defeating Rupertswood by 146 points at Salesian College
Saturday’s win is Marby’s fourth 100-point victory for the year and their first score over 200 points for the season as they now sit in fourth spot with the best percentage in the competition at 252
The match was over by quarter time with Marby kicking 11 goals to zero to take a 68 point lead into the first change
Rupertswood did put up a solid fight in the second quarter to make it five goals to one
however it was all in vain with Marby kicking 19 of the last 22 goals to win by 24 goals
Will Ryan had his best game for the year with six goals
while Scott Clarke and Brodie Romensky made the most of their opportunities with four goals each
Fraser Phelan-Smith was one of Rupertswood’s best once again with two goals while Matt Castle and Patrick Ervin had solid games despite the loss
Marby will be looking to continue this dominant form when they host Oak Park
while Rupertswood will be looking to bounce back when they travel to Tullamarine to take on the Demons
It took until Round 9 but Coburg Districts have enjoyed their first game decided by more than 13 points with their 119-point demolition over East Sunbury
The scoreboard pressure was applied immediately as the Lions kicked nine unanswered in the first quarter and would continue to extend the margin as the game progressed
Jack McNamara enjoyed his day in front of the big sticks booting nine majors
It wasn't all doom and gloom for East Sunbury who would take some confidence from an even third quarter
as well as the performances from David Morrice
Coburg Districts will face a rampant Taylors Lakes next week
Taylors Lakes make it two wins against Sunbury Kangaroos following their 40-point triumph at Eric Boardman Reserve
The Lions were more efficient in front of goal taking a 16-point lead into the first break
before the Kangaroos kicked into gear and threatened to pull ahead
It was a five-point margin at the main change but with Taylors Lakes kicking away in their first meeting and the Kangaroos undermanned
you felt the Lions could pull away at any stage
They did just that kicking five goals in the third quarter while restricting the Kangaroos to just one behind
carrying a 40-point lead through to the final siren
Luke Nappi was lively in Taylors Lakes' forward half and was especially dangerous in the first half when the game was even
while Christian Petersen was consistently a likely marking option ending up with two goals
Aaron Vendramini was sublime through the midfield with Chris Vulic
as Darby Lalor was a standout in a tight defensive unit
Nathan Thomas was a strong contributor for the Kangaroos limiting Vulic at stoppage while finding his own footy
with Brandon Smith and Jackson Treweek forming a serviceable ruck combination
Taylors Lakes will next face Coburg Districts while Sunbury Kangaroos will prepare for Northern Saints
Westmeadows outlasted a valiant Hadfield outfit winning by 23 points on the back of a strong final quarter
The Hawks continue to prove they're a markedly improved side being competitive against every team bar the top two
sides their opponents in Westy have also struggled against
The game ebbed and flowed throughout the first three quarters with just one point separating the two sides at the final change
The Tigers accelerated in the final term and kicked five goals to one to give themselves the victory
Shaun O'Grady led the way for Westy with three goals
while Rex Hickman and Nathan Sparks kicked two goals each in best-on-ground performances
With Hadfield's leading goalkicker in Jack Wallace absent
the Hawks enjoyed three-goal efforts from Josh Trembearth and Ayden Woodward
Westy will be looking they can match with the top sides when they meet Burnside Heights again
Northern Saints continue their season resurgence with a seven-point win over Glenroy making it three wins from their last four games
It was a tale of two halves for Glenroy who couldn't buy a goal to half time kicking 2.10 to trail by 32 points
The Roys would kick 9.3 in the second half to breathe life into the contest but ultimately fell just short to a Saints outfit carrying a wave of momentum as they turn their season around
The result makes it four losses in a row by 10 points or less for Glenroy with three of those within a kick
Nick Bruno (five goals) and Khoder Taleb (four goals) have been at the forefront of the resurgence while Bronell Kako chipped in with three goals in a best-on-ground performance
Mark Sabatino led the way for Glenroy kicking five goals
and George Abdallah continuing strong seasons
Glenroy will look to secure a much-needed victory against East Sunbury next week
while Northern Saints will have a chance to move into the top four when they take on Sunbury Kangaroos
Moonee Valley defeated Keilor by 38 points to win their third game of the season
It was an important win for the Valley who now move 12 points clear of last and eight points clear of Keilor in second last to give them security from relegation
The game was relatively close in the first half before Moonee Valley kicked away in the second half scoring three goals to none
It was a valiant effort from Keilor early on who were able to match Moonee Valley’s intensity in the first half before falling away in the second
Olivia Lacy was once again one of Keilor's best as they continue their fight to avoid relegation
Oak Park have once again won the grand final rematch defeating Aberfeldie by two goals in another thrilling encounter between the two sides
The match was close all day but Oak Park took a two-goal buffer into three quarter time and managed to keep that margin when the final siren sounded
Alex Quigley was the star for Oak Park kicking five goals in what was a huge victory in the context of Oak Park's season
it was a disappointing result but also one that had many positives and will know they're not far off returning to winning ways against the Kangaroos
Aberfeldie next play Marby Park and Oak Park take on Essendon Doutta Stars
Maribyrnong Park claimed an important win over Essendon Doutta Stars this weekend by nine points
It was a reversal of the first time these teams met this season back in Round 1 when Douttas came out on top by 54 points
The win has shown just how much Marby Park has improved since the start of the year
The game was close all day with just three points separating the sides at half time
but Marby proved to be the better team on the day holding on to a narrow lead for the rest of the match
It was a tough loss for Douttas who remain above Marby but only by percentage as the race for finals begins to heat up
Hillside recorded a huge 110-point victory over the winless Westmeadows to keep their unbeaten streak alive for another week
The Sharks have now won eight from eight as they continue to charge towards finals
It was an especially massive second half from Hillside who kicked 10 goals
Caitlin Sargent booted eight goals which brings her back to the top of the goal kicking leaderboard having scored 31 majors in just the eight games
It was disappointment once again for Westmeadows who failed to score a single point for the second consecutive round
They will be hoping to regroup in the final stages of the season as they still look for their first win of the season
while Hillside will line up against Keilor
Burnside Heights recorded another massive win over Keilor Park by 126 points
The win boosted Burnsides' percentage up to 550 percent keeping above Greenvale in first place as the race for the minor premiership heats up
Skipper Kayla Ravanello led from the front booting six goals which took her season tally to 24
The only slight cause for concern was the Bears’ wayward kicking as they scored 25 behinds
given the margin they won’t stress over that too much
It was a tough day at the office for Keilor Park who were simply no match for Burnside Heights
The fight against relegation is on as only four points separate the bottom three teams as they all look to avoid last place
Keilor Park next face Strathmore/Pascoe Vale in an important clash
while Burnside Heights will play Airport West
Greenvale claimed another comfortable win this week defeating Strathmore/Pascoe Vale by 71 points
The win keeps Greenvale equal on points for first place
but they will need to improve their percentage if they want to take the top spot
Alisa Magri was once again impressive scoring four majors and extending her lead on the goal kicking leaderboard by taking her season tally to 31 goals
Amy Hakim was also potent upfront kicking three goals
Strathmore/Pascoe Vale started the game really well scoring three goals in the first quarter but then ran out of gas for the remaining quarters as they only scored one more goal for the rest of the game
Alexsis Ryan was their best player on the day as she scored three of their four goals
Strathmore/Pascoe Vale next face off against Keilor Park
Airport West have won an absolute thriller defeating Tullamarine by just two points
The match was close all day with Airport West taking a three-point lead into the final break
as Tullamarine were only able to cut the margin down by a single point in the final term as Airport West ran away victorious in the end
While the win all but assures Airport West of a top three finish
they would be a bit disappointed with how close the game remained
It was heartbreak for Tullamarine who will feel they lost a game they should have won
Tulla had three more scoring shots than Airport West but simply couldn’t capitalise on their chances
there were still plenty of positives to take out from the win and they will be confident they can avoid relegation now
while Airport West will play Burnside Heights
Coburg Districts recorded a massive win over East Sunbury by 86 points
The Districts dominated from start to finish with Jacinta Brew kicking four goals and Olivia Woods booting three goals being massive up forward
The win now moves the Districts into third place with two games in hand on second place and a top two finish remains firmly on the cards
It was another tough week for East Sunbury who were once again no match for their opposition
East Sunbury next faces Roxburgh Park as Coburg Districts come up against Sunbury Lions
Sunbury Lions won a comfortable 58-point game against Glenroy this weekend
Sunbury Lions are right back on the winner’s board after their first loss of the season last round
dominating the game all day and never giving Glenroy a chance to get back into it
It was a hard game for Glenroy who struggled to find any momentum and have still only won one game this season
They will be hoping for better performances across the last few games of the season
while Sunbury Lions will face Coburg Districts
Sunbury Kangaroos have defeated Taylors Lakes in a thriller by four points
The Kangaroos led for the majority of the game including going into the last quarter
Despite a late fightback from Taylors Lakes
The win keeps the Kangaroos in second place
a position they will be hoping to cement in the run home
It was heartbreaking for Taylors Lakes who just fell short of a comeback win
Their captain Sarah McNally led from the front booting four of their six goals
Taylors Lakes will line up against Glenroy next week
while Sunbury Kangaroos will have the week off with a bye
The 2024 season is just around the corner so EDFL Media will be previewing each club heading into Round One
we chat to returning Avondale Heights coach Patrick Byrne who provides some insights on their 2024 campaign
"My biggest focus was getting an Under 18s side and building depth of quality young players at the football club
It was a mix of bringing local one-pointers back and the best young talent I could find that could run
I believe we achieved that so expect us to be competitive in Under 18s
and Seniors and having a Thirds side is a bonus!"
"Our list has more than 30 players capable of impacting at EDFL Premier Division level
We are young but we have a firm three-year plan in place and we're pretty happy with where we sit."
"Danko Bzenic has returned to the club in super nick and will be exciting to watch teamed up with Tom Gleeson
and Liam Bianco to give our forward 50 a different look
and in the midfield new skipper Jackson Robb and Daniel Gervasoni are flying
"Obviously everyone will be watching Jack Ziebell on ANZAC Day!"
"Our goal for the season is to be competitive in every game in all grades
There's no real number but like everyone at this time of year
the aim is to win footy games and improve the group starting with Round 1."
After a season off you’ve made your way back to Canning Reserve
what were some of the biggest drivers in returning
"Obviously I have a strong relationship with the old playing group and with the disappointment of players leaving and the club in a tough spot
"A new committee and a new energy convinced me I could succeed in making the club better for the short and long term."
There’s been a change in leadership at the club with Jackson Robb and Tom Russell announced as co-captains
What made them stand out as leaders to step in for Matt Darby
"Jackson Robb and Tommy Russell had great years in a tough environment
You always find people's character when things are tough
"They are both locals who want the club to get better and have been pretty excited about all the new players at the club
Darbs will continue to be a leader and is no doubt helping the new skippers."
One opposition player you’d love on your side
Brody Watts (Sunbury Kangaroos) & Anthony Curtis (Tarneit)
Jake Olivieri (Sunbury Kangaroos) & Aidyn Johnson (Tatura)
It was a fruitful off season for the Heights who managed to bring in some players who they'd expect can suit up on a regular basis and provide value for a side entrenched in the relegation conversation again
There's optimism of an improved outfit at Canning Reserve but due to the strength of the sides above them
it'll need to be a significant improvement for them to make strides up the ladder and out of the relegation battle

There’s a “barbecue house” at the back of the property
Mr Vodanovic said he bought the block of land for their dream home after arriving midway through the auction and bidding without any prior inspections about 20 years ago
The family hosted two weddings and a baptism in the incredible gardens during their time there
“It’s a really private house so nobody can see anything while hosting private parties,” Mr Vodanovic said
“It’s something hard to let go of because it’s very sentimental … we hope it’s bought by somebody who loves it too.”

Ms Mandalas said they knew the Ristevskis had lived in the home
but they were acquainted with Borce’s son Anthony through mutual friends and “knew Karen didn’t reside at the home or live at the home at the time of the murder”
But she said the home’s history “didn’t bother us”: “We fell in love with it and its warm family feel”

this is a side with plenty of heart and plenty of promise
New coach Patrick Byrne has brought in some very handy players to complement a promising young list looking to take the next step
Aaron Gundry and Harrison Macreadie (if available) all adding valuable experience to the side
The Heights will well and truly find themselves in the midfield pack fighting to contend for a sneaky finals berth
but if they don't bring enough consistency against the sides around them on the ladder
then they may be at risk of again being stuck in the lower end of the ladder
3 June 2019 | Tennis Victoria
Two star volunteers from the Avondale Heights Tennis Club have recently been acknowledged for their wonderful service to the club
Shirley Barclay and Fernando Martinez were presented with Tennis Service Awards in front of a full club house of appreciative members
The pair have collectively notched up 70+ years of service
Barclay and Martinez have both held numerous positions within the club but currently hold vice president and treasurer respectively
Barclay’s journey began in 1976 playing in the mid-week ladies competition
With her children being coached at the time
she offered her assistance as junior delegate and unselfishly continued that position even after their junior years
She was appointed secretary in 1998 – and to this day remains in that position
Her efficiency is exemplified by her organisational skills
From key master to club official at Council meetings
Barclay is always happy to do whatever the club requires
This dedication resulted in deserved life membership with the club
Martinez’s journey began in a similar way to Barclay’s in that the children’s tennis involvement was the catalyst to them lending a hand
he was appointed vice president of the club and has been such an integral part of the community
No job is too big or too small for Martinez
He has been involved in many maintenance requests and been extremely important in organising courts for competitions
He has shown tremendous commitment to the club
and both he and Barclay should feel proud of what they have achieved
The Avondale Heights house where Karen Ristevski was killed hit the market in the same week laws were changed to ensure Victorian buyers aren’t left in the dark about homes’ grisly pasts
Victorian agents and vendors were barred from “knowingly conceal(ing) any material facts” about properties for sale
including whether they’d been the site of a murder
They previously only needed to disclose such information when asked
Barry Plant Moonee Valley sales director Bill Karp said his agents would be “pointing out to people that the property (at 23 Oakley Drive) was part of the Karen Ristevski case”
“We’re not trying to get any extra publicity about it
Her husband, Borce, pleaded guilty to her manslaughter in March 2019 and is serving a minimum 10 years in jail
would be the beneficiary of the sale of the five-bedroom house
which has a $1.2-$1.3 million price guide for its scheduled April 4 auction
The kitchen features stainless steel appliances and two pantries
CoreLogic records show the 656sq m property last changed hands in 1994 for $125,000
Mr Karp said he’d only ever sold one other house with a background like this one and found prospective buyers’ responses to be “really black and white”
there’s normally nothing in the middle,” he said
The property has already attracted more than 3000 views on realestate.com.au since hitting the market on Friday
but Mr Karp said it was too early to gauge genuine buyer interest
The agent expected its position in the St Bernard’s Estate
arguably Avondale Heights’ “premium residential pocket”
He said the house also offered “spectacular” views of the city and Maribyrnong River
Highpoint shopping centre and St Bernard’s College
“Some people will look to … update it throughout
The rear balcony needs a bit of work,” Mr Karp said
but a buyer could otherwise move straight in
The elevated property offers striking views
Consumer Affairs Minister Marlene Kairouz said vendors and agents who failed to comply with the state government’s new Material Facts Guidelines would “face tough penalties”
including heavy fines and imprisonment for “the most serious offences”

prompting calls for the plan to be blocked by the Victorian government

They and the state opposition are also calling for the state to step in to prevent further development while Melbourne Water and parliamentary flood inquiries run their course
This week The Age revealed Melbourne Water ignored advice to declare a potential perceived conflict of interest surrounding its inquiry into October’s flood
Emails also show a state minister’s office and the water department vetted a Melbourne Water statement to The Age
casting doubt on the inquiry’s independence
After last October’s floods, Premier Daniel Andrews announced Melbourne Water would stage a public inquiry led by planning expert Nick Wimbush. He resigned after The Age revealed Wimbush in 2015 gave the OK to planning rule changes at Rivervue
removing a flood overlay on the property that allowed construction of the very units that flooded last year

Rivervue is pushing on with a new stage of the retirement village
submitting an application to Moonee Valley Council just four days before last year’s flood

Residents and Moonee Valley Council have called for the retirement village’s flood risk zoning to be reviewed but
Melbourne Water has also yet to finish its investigation into Rivervue

Moonee Valley mayor Pierce Tyson said the council was required to consider every planning permit application it received

Heaver may be able to return next month to the villa she shares with her 36-year-old daughter
Heaver went into Rivervue “to provide security and safety for my daughter”
but since the flood has lived on the Bellarine Peninsula in a house she is paying for herself
“The costs that have been forced back onto us are enormous,” she said
According to the overlay on the Rivervue property she bought
it was not prone to flooding – even though it had been until the planning changes approved by the Andrews government in 2016
“That this home was in a floodplain was information that I simply didn’t have and that we should have been entitled to.”
Heaver has objected to the latest stage of the development
who remains in Mornington while his Rivervue home is fixed
also submitted an objection to the developer’s latest plans because he is worried about flood risk
He demanded the developer withdraw its application
“Until the parliamentary inquiry completes its findings
only then do I think it’s appropriate for the developer to put in an application,” he said

Korkliniewski is concerned the value of his villa
which he paid just over $600,000 for in 2018
He called for compensation given Melbourne Water’s flood zoning changes seven years ago
“Our wealth has been diminished significantly and because of our age there’s no way we can recoup that kind of money,” he said
Opposition planning spokesman David Hodgett said the retirement village flood needed to be understood before more development took place
“Why do further development there that could become subject to future floods
And who in their right mind is going to buy these new villas
It’s very premature to be looking at another stage of development.”
said its application was part of long-standing plans for the property and would be subject to the usual statutory processes
He said the business was awaiting the outcomes of the Melbourne Water and parliamentary flood inquiries to determine how to proceed with any future flood prevention
including in relation to mitigation and management of future flood events as well as insights into the cause and contributors to the flood event.”
A spokeswoman for Water Minister Harriet Shing would not comment on the developer’s new application or on compensation for residents
“Melbourne Water is currently undertaking its Maribyrnong River flood review and we will consider the findings once that work is completed.”
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday morning
Shing again insisted Melbourne Water’s review was independent of the state government despite emails obtained by The Age showing ministerial staff edited and approved a Melbourne Water statement about Wimbush’s resignation
“Neither I nor my office have had any involvement in reaching into the work that Melbourne Water is doing as part of its review,” Shing said
Asked whether she stood by Melbourne Water boss Nerina Di Lorenzo following the authority’s appointment of Wimbush
Shing said “that’s a question for Melbourne Water”
A parliamentary inquiry was established after extensive reporting by The Age about Melbourne Water’s inquiry
Greens and crossbenchers teaming up to launch a wider-ranging flood review
A Melbourne Water spokesman did not say whether the authority would green-light the new Rivervue planning application
He said the investigation into the village’s development was continuing
and a technical assessment of the village site was also being undertaken to inform future planning outcomes
“Any decisions on future Rivervue approvals will be informed by these assessments
which will include climate change projections.”

ON Wednesday night Taylors Lakes’ women travelled to Avondale Heights to form a new-look EDFL Women’s team
Taylors Lakes originally didn’t have enough numbers to fill a side
saw this as an opportunity to grow her side at Canning Reserve
“We thought we’d just help our mates in the EDFL and give their girls the opportunity to keep playing,” Francis told essendondfl.com.au
“We thought it was the best opportunity for them and us to field the team.”
Francis says there are about 15 Avondale Heights players who have combined with the five Taylors Lakes players
One player in particular was Francis’ motivation to get an EDFL Women’s side up and running at Canning Reserve
Rita Ceravolo (pictured) played Auskick at Avondale Heights and has stayed at the club ever since
Francis says she is coming up to her 100th game and wanted to keep her at the club to experience that achievement
As far as the achievement of making finals
Francis says that’d simply a bonus for her side
“There’s a lot of clubs that have been playing for a couple of years that are set up and are really on their way
we’re just going to take it one game at a time and just build on that and hopefully get success in a couple of years’ time
“If anything happens this year and we get into finals then it’s a bonus.”
Francis says that the combined side has given the Avondale Heights women a new experience that will change their role at the club
“It’s given that opportunity for our girls to get motivated and feel part of the club
not just helpers and volunteering,” she said
“They’re actually going to be on the ground and pulling on the big white V.”

St Martin de Porres Parish Avondale Heights was filled with joyful and proud parishioners on Sunday 5 November as the parish marked its 60th anniversary
Archbishop Peter A Comensoli joined parish priest Fr Nhan Le and other local clergy to mark the occasion
with Fr Nhan saying he felt ‘humbled but extremely grateful’ to be part of a parish community built by generations of faith-filled men and women
many of whom had been in the parish since its inception in the early 1960s
locals of Avondale Heights (affectionately known as ‘Avondaly’ by the local Italian community) would travel by foot and later by bus to St Mary’s in Ascot Vale or St Margaret’s in Maribyrnong via a one-lane bridge for Sunday Mass
One parishioner recalled how in the wet months
locals would hang up their boots outside during Mass so that they would be dry enough for the walk back
The area remained largely farmland until the development of housing estates in the late 1950s and early 1960s
five acres of land were purchased in Avondale Heights for the building of a church and a small hall
Fr Joseph O’Keefe was appointed the first parish priest
and St Martin de Porres Catholic Parish was officially established in January 1963
Fr O’Keefe later approached the Sisters of the Resurrection in Essendon
who had been known for their faith formation of young people
consisting of a single class taught by Sister Anastasia
steadily grew to house hundreds of students from the increasing number of families who later moved into the area
The parish has never really ceased its program of building and development over the last 60 years
with each of its six parish priests undertaking significant additions or refurbishments to suit the needs of the local community
more land was purchased to enable the parish school to add more classrooms
and Fr Ronald Merrick oversaw the extension of the church building to accommodate the growing community
with the assistance of pioneering parish families
commenced the construction of the current church building
his vision for the building was to ‘build a church in a classic design that would last forever’
as evidenced by the church’s cathedral-like ceiling
stained glass windows and clear glass windows that would ‘bring in the beauty of the world’
including Fr Brendan Hayes and Fr Tony Kerin
continued to work with the community to improve the church and school facilities
including the creation of a parish pastoral centre for use by the various parish groups
reflective of the many ethnicities that continue to call Melbourne home
This was a point of celebration on the weekend
as parishioners were invited to bring up the flags of their home countries
it is this rich cultural diversity that led former parish priest Fr Tony Kerin to coin the phrase ‘the world’s most liveable parish’ to describe the St Martin’s community
Archbishop Comensoli congratulated the parish community on their anniversary and for being a place where ‘God’s family’ has firmly been established
‘Know and treasure that life in God has indeed been preached and practised over these many years,’ he said
Following the Mass the Archbishop blessed a newly built Marian garden and grotto
after which parishioners embarked on a procession around the parish grounds in thanksgiving for the life of their community and its many ministries
Fr Nhan thanked not only his predecessors but also the lay and religious men and women who contributed to the vibrant life of the parish
who spent almost 30 years in the parish school
the Augustinian Sisters joined the St Martin’s community
and they continue to assist the parish and school today
This generosity of spirit is what continues to make St Martin’s ‘the world’s most liveable parish’
‘And we look forward to the future with enthusiasm!’

Avondale Heights has long been a hub for Italian migrants and their families in Melbourne’s western suburbs
It also has the highest rate of dementia in Victoria – a label that some say shows more about the community’s prosperity than its shortfalls
Dr Vincent Strangio grew up around Avondale Heights and now works in the area.Credit: Jason South
many of whom migrated to Australia after World War II searching for better job opportunities
They are now living longer than ever before
my grandparents wouldn’t have lived past their 60s,” said Strangio
who works at Centreway Medical Centre in neighbouring Keilor East
“I’ve one at 96 and one that just died at 99
Avondale Heights’ rate of dementia is more than three times the state average
an analysis of census data as part of this masthead’s State of Our Health series shows
It’s a phenomenon that Strangio and his colleagues have mulled over before
there are several dementia risk factors in the suburb
which has a median age of 45 – seven years older than the Victorian average – and where almost a quarter of the population has Italian ancestry
The first set of risk factors relates to the change of lifestyle that occurred as migrants shifted from their European villages
where people generally walked everywhere and grew and farmed their own food
And while Avondale Heights is still dotted with fruit trees and cottage gardens
Strangio said their traditional Mediterranean diet had incorporated less healthy additions such as processed white pasta and more sugary treats
This can contribute to high blood pressure and higher cholesterol
Avondale Heights also has a number of residential aged care facilities
Dementia is used to describe several types of incurable and degenerative diseases that can affect people’s memory
There are significant risk factors for developing dementia that can’t be avoided
such as ageing (two in five Australians over 90 have dementia) and genetics
But experts believe that roughly 40 per cent of cases worldwide are caused by 12 modifiable risk factors
“We know that what’s good for our heart is good for our brain,” said Maree McCabe
“So looking after our vascular health is really important … It’s really important to live a healthy lifestyle
get in exercise [and] avoid excessive alcohol.”
The 2021 census data shows there are several Victorian communities where there are no or very few people living with dementia
Eynesbury and Exford (south of Melton) and parts of Truganina and Tarneit
All of these areas have populations younger than the state average
University of Sydney healthy ageing expert Professor Lee-Fay Low said dementia should be on the radar of every community
as people needed to start thinking about their risk factors when they were younger
to decrease their chances of developing the disease in older age
“The evidence is that from midlife you need to look after your blood pressure
Australia’s age-standardised rate of deaths from dementia (which takes into account the country’s ageing population) has increased slightly in the last decade from 35 to 38 deaths per 100,000 people according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare
Low said that this may not represent a real increase
but down to improved reporting of the still-stigmatised condition
Low said it was estimated that up to 50 per cent of people with dementia had not yet had a formal diagnosis
because it meant that people might be not accessing support services or drugs that can slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease
“Some of the evidence is saying more [than a year] … That’s a year where you could see your granddaughter get married
go on a trip – a year makes a difference.”

This above-par Avondale Heights house is sure to make golfers green with envy
Owner of the past decade Jackson Barling has built his own private driving range in the backyard
And he’s now inviting buyers to take a swing at the 49 Barbara Crescent property
listing it with a $940,000-$1m price guide

Father and son duo Alessio and Armando Villani are no strangers to the baking game. Before opening their thriving Avondale Heights bakery Impasto in 2014
the pair were selling bread at three different bakeries they owned in Deer Park and East Keilor
Now the Villanis have ventured into restaurant territory for the first time with Il Porto
“We saw a big demand for pizza – we were doing pizza at Impasto already
and so we just thought we’d expand,” Alessio says
“It’s given us more of an opportunity to engage with the customers on a restaurant level
as at Impasto (which is just a few shopfronts away)
The Villanis work to a family recipe using locally milled 00 flour that’s leavened for 55 hours
And nothing highlights the resulting base better than the two classics: the margherita and the marinara
travel spots and more – curated by those who know
“[They’re the] traditional two pizzas that started it all,” Alessio says
“It’s where everyone started.” Other pizzas on the menu include the Zucchini Gamberetti
fior di latte and mint; the Tonno e Cipolla with tuna
parsley and caramelised red onion (marinated in wine); and the Boscaiola
eggplant parmigiana and four types of bruschetta (including buffalo mozzarella and olive
and San Daniele prosciutto and ricotta) on the menu
the ricotta cannoli is a textbook rendition of the Sicilian classic
there’s a selection of local and Italian beers and wines
a Negroni and three spritzes – a sloe gin version
seltzer and mint (“It should be the next Aperol Spritz,” quips Alessio)
A line of pendant lights leads to a fridge where legs of San Daniele prosciutto hang
one with the local time and one on Italy time
The duo chose stool seating over dining chairs for a more casual feel
and the pizza is prepared at a large marble benchtop
“It’s probably the best surface to prepare dough and manipulate dough on,” Alessio says
