The broad context encompasses a diverse mix of small/ large sized residential properties from the 19th century to contemporary. The house is tucked away on a quiet tree lined street with the city centre and Lake Wendouree precinct at arm’s reach. The client brief included the need to retain the front façade and front rooms of the house with the rest of the project up for grabs but needing to meet the growing family requirements. Therefore the front existing area of the house was zoned as the bedroom/ kids area with the new north lit living areas to the rear, a two storey master bedroom quarters above and a double garage with lane access to the rear. The new form of the living and master bedroom quarters reference the existing area fabric with an extruded gable in darker metal cladding in contrast to the lighter existing 19th century front. The new proposal is barely visible from the street keeping the street intact but also giving a small clue that there is something new at the rear of the property. The extruded gable has all north facing double height glass bringing in lots of sunshine to the new living zone and master bedroom quarters. Textures have been hand picked to reference the local area including dark metal claddings, brick and timbers. The result is a reinvented family home that celebrates its journey from its 19th century past to the contemporary intervention of the new rear living zone engaging the local context. Youth Ambassador Jacob Osenaris The Ballarat community will come together over the next 16 days to take a stand against gender-based violence  The City of Ballarat is joining with member organisations of the Communities of Respect and Equality Alliance (CoRE) and the Central Highlands Integrated Family Violence Committee (CHIFVC) to host several events throughout the international 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence campaign  CoRE is a partnership of organisations clubs and groups who share a vision for safe equal and respectful communities in the Grampians region CHIFVC includes specialist family violence services as well as organisations and alliances whose work intersects with family violence response early intervention and prevention. The 16 Days of Activism campaign runs every year from 25 November the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women This year’s campaign encourages all Victorians to work together to prevent violence for the community to get involved in during the 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence. All events are free of charge so there is no barrier for community members to participate. While all victim-survivors of gender-based violence should be recognised and supported about 80 per cent of victim-survivors are women More than one in three women have experienced men’s violence in Australia a woman is killed by a man she knows every 10 days and in 2024 that number is much higher. The family violence incident rate in Ballarat is higher than the Victorian rate police attend approximately six incidents of gender-based violence a day children were present at 45 per cent of incidents Cr Tracey Hargreaves said that while gender-based violence is prevalent in Ballarat  “Ballarat has felt the pain that gender-based violence inflicts upon communities which is why we must all play our part to challenge the harmful attitudes and behaviors that drive violence against women and children,” she said  “This 16 Days of Activism and beyond we have an opportunity to come together to forge a future where all Ballarat residents are safe equal and respected.”  Respect Victoria CEO Helen Bolton said that the 16 Days of Activism is an opportunity to take action and stand in solidarity as a community “Not all disrespect leads to violence against women but all violence against women starts with disrespect Safety for women in any community isn’t a given but it doesn’t have to be this way and we all have the power to change it,” she said “From attending a local event during the 16 Days of Activism to pulling aside a mate if they say something harmful to challenging stereotypes that hold us all back – every small step you take matters.”    Women’s Health Grampians CEO Marianne Hendron said there was real momentum in the community after a challenging year of gender-based violence especially given the current focus on Ballarat with Respect Victoria’s Saturation model project  “Partnerships and collaboration are a vital part of the puzzle and key to the 16 Days events taking place across the city,” she said  “We’re particularly looking forward to the Ballarat Leadership Forum on 3 December a significant violence prevention event that aims to engage men in this important work.” The Ballarat Walk Against Gender-based Violence has received funding from Respect Victoria "City of Ballarat's hope is that the ALP will match this promise so that funding support for this program is guaranteed regardless of the outcome of this election." This is a good 24.4 per cent increase over the past five years, but still affordable for people who don’t have a trust fund at their disposal. “We’re happy again,” says Dominic Morrison of Ballarat Real Estate. “We came back to earth in 2024, but buyers are coming back into the market, as well as investors from interstate and overseas.” In more good news from the Central Highlands, the Victorian Goldfields have taken one step closer to being added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Stretching from Ballarat to Bendigo, the world’s most extensive and best-surviving gold rush-era landscapes were earlier this year added to Australia’s World Heritage Tentative List. Another few years of assessment are required to decide whether they get the big gong, but the crowds descending on Sovereign Hill have already decided it’s worth the trip. For those thinking of making their visit more permanent, Morrison says Lake Wendouree (the Toorak of Ballarat), Soldiers Hill, Ballarat Central and Newington are the best areas. “They’re all leafy and heritage protected,” he says. The 66kg Welcome Stranger, found in 1869, was then the largest gold nugget ever discovered. Estimates put its modern value at $3 million to $4 million, according to Museums Victoria. The nugget was unearthed at Moliagul, about 9 minutes by car from Bealiba. The property for sale, on the books of Maryborough Ballarat Real Estate, consists of a “prospector’s shed”, giving shelter to the buyer who seeks a simple life, connected to the land. “This is a prospector’s dream basecamp currently, offering a rustic shed/shack with multiple rooms – not a residence, but a great shelter from the elements,” the Domain listing explains. “With water tanks, established vegetable gardens, garaging, and miscellaneous sheds, you’ll have everything you need to start living off the land.” The new owner will need to make a couple of tweaks. Second ‘upper tier’ property boom expected in Perth Castlemaine: Woolworths is set to challenge IGA in this gold-rush town Regional areas booming as Victorians opt for tree change over sea change “While power is available, it needs reconnection after a recent storm, and the property has a telephone line,” the listing, handled by agent Kate Ashton, explains. “It’s all set for those ready to create their own goldfield retreat.” For generations, people have come to this part of central Victoria in the hope of striking it rich. Ballarat, about 74km from Bealiba, is the fourth-largest inland city in Australia and was built on the back of goldrush money. Those riches are evident in the ornate architecture, creating famously handsome streetscapes. Tourists flock here for food, wine, history and culture. Bealiba falls within the Central Goldfields Shire and the new owner will find a historic town centre with an all-important pub. 1 Bath2 ParkingView listing The five-bedroom home has a price guide of sub-$900,000, at the time of publication, and a sweet façade that speaks to the city’s heritage. 2 Baths2 ParkingView listing The grand period house is walking distance to Lake Wendouree, the hospital and every imaginable requirement. 1 Bath1 ParkingView listing The vendors undertook a renovation that has added light and life to the home, but gently respects its age. its first location outside of the south-west Concept design supplied.A popular south-west ice creamery is set to open its first store outside the region this season Sudoku and TriviaAll articles from the other regional websites in your areaContinueTimboon Fine Ice Cream owners Tim Marwood and Caroline Simmons said they hoped their new store at 615 Sturt Street "This is our first foray outside the region," Mr Marwood said we might replicate it in Geelong or Melbourne" Timboon Fine Ice Cream owners Tim Marwood and Caroline Simmons stand outside the popular tourist destination "The response on social media has been quite surprising," Mr Marwood said "I'm amazed at how many people have commented and are looking forward to us opening "Over the years we've done lots of mobile event work in Ballarat we've always been well supported by them and we thought we should look at just putting a shop there."
