But while our team of 800-plus workers are on site every day working to deliver this complex conversion, the significant extension will take longer than expected and is now scheduled for completion in 2026. The complexity of this project has been compounded by significant industrial action, placing increasing pressure on the construction and testing programs. Nevertheless, progress to deliver a gamechanging new metro service for Sydney’s southwest is powering ahead, with a series of milestones achieved in recent weeks that have seen the former T3 Bankstown line start to resemble a modern metro railway.  An impressive 360 platform screen doors and 170 mechanical gap fillers have been fitted at stations from Marrickville to Bankstown. While passengers may already be familiar with Sydney Metro’s safety screen doors, mechanical gap filler technology is an Australian-first and was designed specifically to address the gap created between the train and the curved platforms of the Bankstown line.   These step-like devices are built to extend quickly from the platform to the train before the doors open to eliminate the gap and allow safe and easy access for all passengers.   Sydney Metro delivery partners Hyundai Movex were responsible for installation of the mechanical gap fillers, while UGL installed the platform screen doors across the southwest stations. It took approximately 500 hours for 110 workers to fit out the stations with the new technology.   Another significant milestone realised for the project has been the completion of the installation of 28.3 kilometres of high-tech railway fencing. Two types of fencing have been installed over 24 months:    The security fencing along the perimeter features a first-of-its-kind intrusion and object detection security system. The technology includes the use of fibre optic cables located on the fence to monitor for vibrations or breakage.   If the fence is triggered, one of the 89 CCTV cameras fitted inside the rail corridor will point towards the impacted section, allowing security staff to identify a possible intrusion and take the necessary action to respond.  Once the final section of the M1 Northwest & T3 Bankstown Line to metro standards with a major contract awarded for important infrastructure upgrades The Sydney Metro Southwest Metro Conversion and Station Works (SWM4) package has been awarded to Australian-owned railway infrastructure company Martinus. A total of 15 bridges and 66 locations adjacent to the railway corridor between Sydenham and Bankstown will be upgraded as part of the contract scope the team will complete a program of work over the duration of the 12-month closure to reduce the risk of vehicles impacting on the network. These protective measures ensure driverless Sydney Metro services are safe for passengers and that the 130-year-old rail corridor meets modern safety standards  Delivering these essential upgrades will be completed without major impacts to the community some upgrades will require traffic and pedestrian changes and out-of-hours work  Community members will be kept informed about upcoming construction activities by email road signage and via the Sydney Metro website. The 12-month closure of the T3 Bankstown line to upgrade the railway to metro standards involves an intensive program of work including installation of mechanical gap filler technology to allow seamless access to metro trains for all commuters the conversion of Bankstown Station to support Sydney Trains and Sydney Metro services and the installation of critical trackside signalling and communications equipment. A temporary transport plan including free bus travel is in place while the metro conversion of the T3 Bankstown Line is completed to help the tens of thousands brought to a public head a long-simmering debate about the extent and legitimacy of Zionist Israel’s interference in Australian political and public life and in our most vital community institutions like national broadcasters or health systems Journalism is said to be the first draft of history The writer of this essay has been “in the thick of it” for the last 72 hours I have been engaged in fierce keyboard warfare sparked off by the case of the immediate sacking on 12 February of two Bankstown Hospital nurses both Australian citizens of Islamic faiths and backgrounds They had been entrapped by a skillful Israeli online influencer into making foolish anti-Israeli statements which were in clear transgression of their professional duty as health professionals to treat and be seen to treat all patients equally regardless of who they are or where they come from I am proud of my partly Jewish and partly Irish Catholic ethnic background I cherish my citizenship of multicultural Australia my country of birth to which I owe my first loyalty I regard all Australians as my equal fellow citizens I have come over recent years — consolidated by my witnessing close-up online the horrifying genocidal actions carried out by the state of Israel in and around Gaza and the West Bank over the past sixteen months since 7 October 2023 — to view Zionist Israel as a criminal state that has forfeited its right to exist in its present form and with its present apartheid ideology I pray that this criminal state might be peacefully replaced by one multicultural state exercising sovereignty over all the disputed Israeli and Palestinian occupied territories: a state that will offers equal human rights under one set of laws to all its citizens and residents regardless of their ethnicity or religion or previous citizenships or residencies I believe that a peaceful transition to such a state is possible despite the genocidal horrors of the past 80 years European history offers many examples of reconciliation of communities after the bitterest of conflicts Such reconciliation usually — not always — requires a supervising outside power or coalition of powers to help manage and enforce the process I now regard Zionism as a pernicious political ideology a perversion of Judaism which is one of the world’s great humanitarian religions the promises of the Balfour Declaration of 2 November 1917 were betrayed by the Zionist settler colonists and their descendants especially since the establishment on 14 May 1948 of the apartheid-based state of Israel now better understood internationally since the traumatic events of 7 October 2023 and afterwards I have come to a better understanding since 7 October 2023 of how Australian Zionists both as organised community groups and informally as well-connected individuals are exercising powerful foreign interference on behalf of the Zionist state of Israel in Australian political life and public institutions I believe it is important now to expose such interferences which collectively have come to threaten the happiness and harmony of our multicultural Australian democracy Zionist Israel’s wars and oppressions against its neighbours have spilled over into faraway Australia We can no longer politely pretend to ignore this foreign interference in our institutions and politics We need to face up to it and deal with it according to our democratic values or we are at risk of undermining the multicultural harmony of our country In a Facebook post I sent out very early on Wednesday 12 February 2025 — how long ago it seems now and just hours before the Bankstown Hospital events first became known to me through my social media — I wrote as follows I rely on informed readers to fill in the detail which for space reasons I cannot spell out – I have made some explanatory additions in square brackets: “Am I the only person who sees how a lot of events/issues relating to Zionist improper influence in multicultural Australia are coming to a head now at around the same time “The Adass Synagogue bombing [in Melbourne on 6 December 2024] by expert saboteurs unsolved after three months [sic] police investigation; “The unsolved crude graffiti incidents against Jewish schools etc in Sydney; “The explosives-laden [abandoned] van in Dural “[Attorney-General Mark] Dreyfus’s paying-homage visits to Zionist Israel and Auschwitz [in Poland] ; “Australia’s backing -away from UN votes reiterating support for ICJ and ICC criminal charges against Zionist Israel; “The [ongoing] Antoinette Lattouf case looking more and more like a train wreck for the Zionist lobbies; “The crude Zionist/Daily Telegraph attempt yesterday [this event took place on 11 February 2025] to provoke [and record] a false flag antisemitic attack at the Cairo Cafe in Sydney’s inner west (fortunately foiled by quick-thinking cafe staff ); “The federal laws on antisemitism [tough so-called ‘Hate Crime’ laws that were passed in Canberra on 6 February 2025 including mandatory minimum sentences for terror offences and displaying hate symbols ] “Jayson Gillham’s [ongoing] case against the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and their Leibler family lawyers ; “Mark Leibler’s online outburst [in his X account on 8 February 2025] against anti-Zionist Jewish Australians ; “We are seeing a test of strength across many fronts for and against the Zionist lobby which has hitherto gone unchallenged at the level of political and media elites Max Blumenthal of The Gray Zone has his finger on the pulse of this He sees this as internationally important.” [Max Blumenthal a well-known independent American journalist “Australian police are investigating whether ‘overseas actors or individuals’ are paying local criminals to carry out antisemitic crimes in the country’ and see the subsequent commentary thread on Blumenthal’s X account].” There is still no clarity on when the crucial online video conversation between the two Bankstown Hospital nurses and the Israeli online influencer Max Veifer was recorded (Sky News says “earlier in the week” which puts it in a timeframe between 9 and 12 February) or when and how the edited video spread like wildfire into Australian media and politicians’ offices I first became aware of it on my social media feeds during 12 February The first released video was followed by a slightly longer video supplied to police and to the media by the Veifer production team They claimed this was now the complete unedited video We have seen since 12 February these edited videos in which the two nurses had a chat with Veifer on the online chat entertainment program ‘Chatroulette ‘ in which he rings people around the world allegedly at random We don’t know how the two nurses were invited and accepted an invitation to chat with Veifer in the Bankstown Hospital on a work break while they were wearing their working uniforms We don’t know how they were encouraged to take part but it seems very clear now that they were in some way entrapped presents himself as a Borat-style amusing and sympathetic person (“Borat” was a very popular comedy show in around 2005) and as an engaging chatty young Israeli who enjoys talking to people at random from different countries I saw another recent clip in which he tried unsuccessfully to entrap two young women from South Lebanon into making anti-Hezbollah statements They saw through him and he reacted harshly The two Bankstown Hospital nurses were sitting ducks for Veifer Trustingly entering into what they thought was the lightheartedly ironic spirit of the show they were quick to volunteer to Veifer that they hated Israel and Israelis One boasted — clearly an ill- judged joke in bad taste — that he had killed Israeli patients The video cut off abruptly when Veifer asked his next follow-up question In what is still only a two-and-a-half-minute publicly circulated video we are clearly only seeing a tightly edited snippet NSW police have impounded and are studying the CCTV of the video conversation This will tell us how long the conversation was — surely more than two-and-a-half-minutes — and the expressions and body language of the nurses during it I don’t know whether it will provide any audio of what they said but it is nevertheless forensically valuable in establishing the full truth about the conversation All hell broke loose as soon as the offending video became public in Australia Relevant ministers and the nurses’ union fiercely condemned the two nurses and promised they would never be allowed to work in Australian hospitals again Sky News’ leading presenter Sharri Markson quickly broadcast a very sympathetic video interview with Veifer She effusively praised him for his public service to Australia in bringing to light the alleged “very real problem of antisemitism in Australian hospitals” They agreed this needs to be investigated vigorously because patients are vulnerable in public hospitals to staff who might put their politics ahead of their duties Veifer emphasised how similar Australians and Israelis are The two now distraught nurses are under close medical observation is ethnically a Palestinian who has reportedly lost 70 relatives killed under Israeli attacks She is reported to be a highly regarded and well-liked nurse obtained citizenship and his nursing qualification Though I feel great pity for the two nurses’ self-inflicted personal agony I want to offer a hypothesis how this event might have come about and its political significance from here on I consider it highly probable that Veifer is a Mossad agent of influence or a trained agent of Hasbara (with the aim to encourage good thoughts about Zionist Israel) He is just too good at his job of persuading gullible people to like and trust him It is clear to me that the two nurses had been previously profiled and targeted It could not have been an accidental random phone call; of course not It looks in retrospect like a flawless operation swiftly and efficiently planned and carried out at all stages including the Markson interview to generate more mistrust and mutual alienation between Islamic Australians and other Australians The failed provocation the day before at the Cairo Cafe had the same objective Possibly other as yet unsolved allegedly antisemitic crimes have a similar purpose to instil fear into non- Zionist Jewish Australians to encourage them to retreat into the alleged greater safety of the Zionist-influenced parts of the Australian Jewish community Here it is worth noting that the Hadass Synagogue firebombed in Melbourne in December belonged to a non-Zionist Jewish orthodox community to strengthen the political influence of Australian Zionists in Australian political and media elites and to remind those elites of the power of the Zionist lobby in Australia can be counted as an Israeli Zionist political success at a moment when the Albanese Government’s political commitment to Israel might have been thought by the Netanyahu Government to be perhaps weakening Australia is an important political ally whose support Zionist Israel would not want to lose This is an partner. Detective Superintendent Joe Doueihi. File pictureThe victim had no criminal history, police said. But her partner, the father of their two children, was allegedly involved in drug dealing with an organised crime syndicate. The police investigation suggests that the victim and her children were targeted after her partner had a conflict with his alleged criminal employers. "This woman and her children were in no way involved or had knowledge of what their partner or their father was up to, yet they were targeted by this organised crime group," Detective Superintendent Joe Doueihi said. "The level of violence against innocent family members of organised crime groups is rare and unprecedented. These offences are clearly targeted. They're callous, they're brutal," he said. The man had been away from Sydney, working for the Victorian-based drug syndicate for a "number of months" before the attack, police said. He is assisting police with their investigation. Victoria Police raided an alleged drug lab in Springdallah, southwest of Ballarat, on April 19 in connection with the investigation. No one was at the alleged drug lab but police seized evidence of methamphetamine manufacturing. The victim's 8-year-old son was brutally beaten with a baseball bat before kidnappers forced her into an SUV. The child is hospital under police guard in an induced coma. He is expected to suffer lifelong complications as a result of the attack. The victim's 15-year-old son is also receiving treatment for psychological trauma. An autopsy is scheduled for April 23 to determine if human remains found in a burnt-out car in Beverly Hills belong to the victim. Investigators "strongly believe" that she will be identified. Detective Superintendent Joe Doueihi issued a warning to anyone involved in organised crime groups. "If you have a fallout with people you work for, you could place your family and friends at significant risk if things don't work out your way," he said. Read our Privacy Policy The footage of Kelly Farrugia dramatically marching down an aisle in Bankstown Kmart before launching into a hate-filled tirade at around 3.45 pm on Friday 20 December 2024 went viral just before Christmas The Egyptian mother whom the white Australian woman had chosen to direct her anger towards appears to have been targeted as she was wearing a T-shirt displaying solidarity with the Palestinians of Gaza on the back of the top was emblazoned the now controversial phrase “From the River to the Sea” The footage further shows an outraged Farrugia waving her finger at Mariam as she hovers over her and screams directly into her face “Are you proud of wearing ‘From the River to the Sea?’” The Australian woman then waves her diamond ring adorned right hand in the Egyptian mother’s face Overcome with fear for her daughter’s safety Mariam thought to capture this last part of the incident on her phone camera as calling for NSW police assistance became a further trial to bear it wasn’t until the posted footage of the incident was rapidly circulating on social media that Mariam first heard from the NSW police more than 24 hours after the fact The Islamophobia Register Australia told SBS last month that since October 2023, there has been a 530 percent rise in the number of Islamophobic incidents occurring in the community and then being reported But the fact is the increase in Islamophobic incidents like that suffered by Mariam at Bankstown Kmart aren’t being properly reported in the media or addressed by politicians and this suggests that there is a bias in approach to rising hate crimes This unbalanced approach was further revealed when PM Anthony Albanese appointed Jillian Segal to special envoy on antisemitism in early July 2024 to tackle rising prejudice against Jewish people and the top minister said he’d too be appointing a special envoy on Islamophobia The prime minister, however, then waited 12 more weeks to appoint Aftab Malik as special envoy on Islamophobia And this delay spoke volumes to the community regardless of whether it was meant to The fact that Farrugia screamed at Mariam specifically in respect of the phrase “From the River to the Sea” as the Australian government and mainstream media along with their counterparts across the western world have been attempting to prohibit and criminalise this chant which is popular amongst the pro-Palestine movement However, the political party that Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu belongs to, the Likud Party, has always included the statement “Between the Sea and the Jordan, There Will Only be Israeli Sovereignty” as part of its party platform Netanyahu currently has an international warrant issued against his name for war crimes and crimes against humanity Sydney Criminal Lawyers spoke to Mariam about the fear she felt when she was set upon by Kelly Farrugia who is now awaiting trial on a number of charges along with the fact that the NSW police failed her following the incident and the hope that the pro-Palestinian movement holds for the future About a minute and a half before the video was taken I was in one of the aisles with my daughter in the bathroom section and we noticed that boxes were being thrown in our direction But we couldn’t see where these boxes were coming from And we couldn’t understand what was happening so my body was blocked between her and the shelves And then she started pulling boxes onto me But I was trapped in between her and the shelves She then made her way into the main aisle and walked away for about 10 to 15 metres before she started looking back at me making threatening gestures was her motioning to slowly slit my throat which was when I took my phone out and started recording I feared for my daughter’s safety so much The only thing I thought about was that whatever is going to happen next needs to be recorded the rest of the incident is what happened in the video Security took about 8 minutes to arrive on the scene and I called the police about 2 minutes later Security told me that I should call the police because they’d be much more prompt than if they called them I called Bankstown police station and there was no answer I then called triple 0 and was transferred to what I believe was the local station They took all my details and the details of the incident I believe they got in contact with security They said they’d be sending the next car down and that shouldn’t be too long I asked my daughter if she wanted to go to the appointment and she did I took her and then went back and checked with the store manager who said the police still hadn’t come Within two and a half to three hours after the incident I hadn’t heard from the police at all I told friends and family about what had happened And then I posted the footage of the incident online People got in touch to ask if the police called Then I made a decision with the rest of the community to protest this delay by the police at Bankstown police station on the Sunday morning This protest came to the attention of the police at around 5 pm on the Saturday A commander told me the next day that he had been seen the video at that time And that was when he got everyone on duty to chase the incident up community put up some call-out posts to attend Bankstown police station on the Sunday morning police showed up at the house of one of these people to tell her to take down the posts They said they didn’t want the community showing up at the Bankstown police station because they’re afraid of us rioting and vandalising the building I had a talk to the police about that because when they apologised on Sunday ‘Take down the post,’ they immediately said it was because they didn’t want us to damage the building or to be rioting.” And if you step outside and look at the calibre of people who are grieving and yet you would understand what I am trying to say here and why the community is really enraged by the behaviour and attitude of law enforcement towards the community.” At around 5 o’clock on the Saturday after police started to call my daughter was starting to show significant signs of distress And we had already made the decision to go to Bankstown police station at 9 am the following morning I told them I was attending to my daughter I was going to take her for a walk and to dinner and then maybe see some family I told them I would be coming in the next morning But the police said they wanted me to go to the station that day I told them that there would be a chance later on we would be going to the station the next morning You never get anybody answering the phone at Bankstown police station I was filling out some details and I called them up I addressed that with the inspector when he was taking my statement we need you to protect us when our safety is jeopardised.” but Bankstown police station rents two floors in the building and the owner won’t let us update the phone lines.” “That is not our problem at all.” you can see that the community is not being given enough funding for protection And the fact that officers are asking us to put in complaints because they are under resourced is absolutely ridiculous And the police did apologise when we went in They explained that they had to prioritise and the issue was with how the complaint was channelled from triple 0 The commander said he was going to get the recording of the call and find out why it was not prioritised They blamed it on having to prioritise and being understaffed These incidents are happening all the time It’s happened to me and my daughter before It happens when you get in any kind of pro-Palestinian environment We were attacked in Wollongong at one of the rallies Attacks happen quite often at the Sydney rally at Hyde Park There is definitely an issue of underreporting it A lot of people don’t speak about it and I believe that the community at large has lost trust in the ability of law enforcement to attend to their needs and consider their safety a priority This is a sentiment that is widely circulated in the community it’s not taken seriously and it is not investigated appropriately especially when you consider other incidents that we hear about These are two main reasons as to why you don’t hear about it The other thing is that even if it is reported it doesn’t get the media attention that other incidents do get The Islamophobia Register mentioned that anti-Muslim incidents and hate crimes have increased by 530 percent since October 7th and the beginning of the pro-Palestine movement The government and many politicians have chosen one side over the other For a lot of the people in public who are uninformed politically what politicians say in the mainstream media informs the way they understand the world It’s informed by politicians and the mainstream media when Albanese says “From the River to the Sea” is a violent slogan it automatically makes other members of the public These things that are being said are allowing this violence to occur We know that many politicians have chosen Israel’s side. The former secretary of foreign affairs Dennis Richardson said that statements of violence against Israel can very easily flow into actions of violence against communities in our own country statements and comments enable and justify the violence They speak a lot about social cohesion and neutrality lights up the Opera House with the Israeli flag and a lot of people think that everybody needs to remain on that side if they’re going to remain a true Australian Even in terms of education – I’m a teacher myself – and when Jason Clare or at least remain neutral like he wants the teachers to be When students who were grieving the deaths of their own families and friends in Gaza and decided to walk out of class and do a pro-Palestine protest Clare threatened them with the absence appearing on their attendance record and if they missed out on any assessments or exams they weren’t going to get to sit them again That shows how far the politicians are going in choosing one side This is propagating the sentiment against the pro-Palestine movement in the education system who’d just finished his HSC while witnessing the genocide of his own family and people was then denied the right to attend his own graduation ceremony because he was wearing a Palestinian scarf This would not be happening if politicians and the ministers had not been taking a particular side That’s why I strongly believe this racism and the ill treatment towards the pro-Palestine movement and towards Arabs and Muslims is empowered and emboldened by the politicians themselves The current pro-Palestine movement is unprecedented in the modern era The fact that people from all walks of life from all over the world have come together and decided to march stand up for justice and stand against genocide is unprecedented There’s one mindset throughout the world encouraging people to keep resisting this oppression said at the 20 October 2024 pro-Palestine rally in Hyde Park that what we see around the world at the moment for the first time in history is that imperialism is being questioned being made accountable and brought to its knees Uncle Coco’s statement really summaries where we are at right now But it’s alerted the world to the past five centuries of colonialism and oppression and imperialism and it’s brought like minded people together to fight against this oppression It’s going to be a long battle – a lifelong one But it is being ignited by the level of cruelty that the world is seeing right around the clock in Gaza at the moment IT SEEMS THE PAGE YOU'RE LOOKING FOR HAS GONE ASTRAY Kangaroos for the 2025 season bringing the junior league division to 13 clubs across the board the Canterbury Bankstown District Junior Rugby League (CBDJRL) was established in 1921 and will expand for the first time since 2010 with the Kangaroos set to join Bankstown Bulls St Christophers and St Johns Eagles in 2025 The expansion will see the CBDJRL and by extension the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs’ catchment area edge further into the south-west corridor with the addition of the Chipping Norton club The footprint of which already spans from Moorebank to Clemton Park in the west and has helped produce some of the Club’s and NRL’s finest talents “The Chipping Norton area represents a big region with a lot of schools and potential junior players,” said Bulldogs Head of Junior League John Grealy who has overseen the growth of the CBDJRL to over 3,600 participants in 2024 “We welcome Chipping Norton as we want as many kids playing rugby league as possible; it is a highly populated area with young families and if we can bring them into the competition Our goal is to keep the base solid so we can keep seeing more and more juniors come through and possibly even unearth the next generation of rugby league superstars,” he said Behind the players who starred on the NRL stage are a crop of locally produced talent being primed to make their mark across the Club’s junior and senior representative grades Bulldogs Claim Flowers Memorial Pennant for Second Consecutive Year “That is the best thing for our junior league kids to see when they join It allows them to relate and take pride in the Bulldogs badge,” Grealy said All of the 13 clubs will proudly don the official Bulldogs badge on their junior league uniforms in 2025 something that the Club’s current crop of local junior stars remember fondly a return to the Bulldogs badge is familiar territory The club was a mainstay of the CBDJRL from 1984 to 2007 but were unfortunately unable to continue operations in 2007 After 18 years and plenty of hard work behind the scenes the Kangaroos will now officially return to take the field at their original home ground at Childs Park “The Chipping Norton Kangaroos put forward a very impressive proposal to join the junior league and the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs together with the local Council were each very supportive of their readmission,” said Bulldogs Deputy Chair and proud junior league advocate Our Club has long been committed to grow the game of rugby league at a grassroots level and the addition of the Kangaroos means that even more kids and families will have access to play the game with clear and direct pathways all the way from the local ground at Child’s Park through the Bulldogs junior representative grades and into the NRL and NRLW “We are delighted to welcome our 13th junior league club,” Khoury said As the Chipping Norton Kangaroos prepare for their first season back they will be looking to build from the ground up across a range of teams and age divisions Aiding families to access rugby league in the local area the Bulldogs together with Canterbury League Club are proud to be continuing their registration grant subsidy scheme into the 2025 season the registration grant subsidy offers to cover up to $100.00 per child for children who meet the age criteria ranging from Under 5s to Under 13s wishing to play within the CBDJRL This registration subsidy grant will now also extend to the Chipping Norton club helping to reduce the overhead costs for families and encouraging even more kids to participate in grassroots rugby league from the local area Bulldogs and Canterbury League Club Champion Access to Junior Rugby League The 2025 CBDJRL season will begin in mid-April and while registration periods across each club will vary, most registrations across the CBDJRL will open from 1 December 2024. NRL Match Highlights: Bulldogs vs Titans - Round 9 A brief online exchange last week between two nurses at Sydney’s Bankstown Hospital and Israeli “social media influencer” Max Veifer has been seized upon by the political and media establishment to whip up an atmosphere of hysteria and to claim a “national crisis” of antisemitism malicious and is being used to prosecute unstated agendas above all to demonise mass hostility to the Israeli genocide of Palestinians in Gaza including statements that they would not treat Israeli patients and would instead “kill” them were clearly wrong and politically reactionary Essential elements of context have been buried Those include the fact that comments made on random webcam chat sites are frequently exaggerated and rarely taken literally And that Veifer is a well-known provocateur whose speciality is baiting people into making stupid statements by proclaiming his support for Israel’s mass murder of the Palestinians In addition to the viciousness of the attack on the nurses the campaign against them is striking for involving virtually the entire political and media establishment Labor government ministers and their nominal Liberal-National opponents have joined hands to denounce the lowly health workers in the most strident tones Of particular significance for workers is the participation in this witch-hunt of the New South Wales Nurses and Midwives’ Association (NSWNMA) The union immediately and enthusiastically joined the frenzied attacks on two nurses whom it is supposed to represent This went far beyond a statement disavowing the nurses’ comments which rarely comments on major political issues and frequently does not even respond to significant developments in the healthcare sector held a rally against the two Bankstown nurses The circumstances of the event underscored the union bureaucracy’s contempt for the sentiments and rights of its membership in general and the legal and democratic rights of the Bankstown nurses in particular The union had called a protest against the state Labor government’s attacks on nurses’ pay and conditions to be held outside the NSW parliament on Thursday morning The NSWNMA has hobbled the fight by nurses refusing to call strike action or any unified struggle with other health workers who confront identical attempts to slash their real wages and to enforce unbearable conditions with nurses instead expected to turn up in their own time Notwithstanding its token and pathetic character the protest had some mandate in the hostility of nurses to the gutting of their pay and their onerous conditions The union leadership ran roughshod over those sentiments unilaterally cancelling the protest without a fig-leaf of discussion and transforming it into a “solidarity action against hate speech,” targeting the Bankstown nurses from a nominally anti-government rally to a pro-government event had only been broken by the media earlier on Wednesday When the union leadership took the decision to transform the action all that was in the public domain were edited excerpts of the interaction provided by Veifer to right-wing corporate media outlets it was also apparent that they were to be investigated by NSW Police on the grounds that they may have breached “hate crime” legislation the penalties for which can include massive fines and even imprisonment The decision of the NSWNMA leadership to brand the nurses’ comments as “hate speech” was thus utterly prejudicial and a declaration of solidarity with a potential police prosecution Rather than insist that the legal and democratic rights of the nurses be respected the union bureaucrats aligned themselves with the police and the state The event was attended by fewer than a hundred people many of them bureaucrats from the NSWNMA as well as several other unions The speeches were predictable banalities about the impermissibility of hate Racism and antisemitism were repeatedly referenced who spoke about Israeli nationals but did not mention Jewish people several statements underscored the political character of the event A representative of the Public Service Association noted that “unions and governments of all persuasions often have disagreements.” But “one thing that we are all united with is that racism and hatred will not win out in the public.” NSWNMA President O’Bray Smith similarly stated: “We all come together to say that this is just a moment in time.” All of these unions are aligned to the Labor Party Their suggestion that Labor is a key participant in the fight against “hate” and “racism,” emanating from workers Labor is a party of imperialist war and reaction the Labor government of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is in a contest with the far-right Liberal-National opposition over which is the harshest towards refugees and immigrants Labor leaders have venomously attacked refugees as criminals and late last year passed a mass deportation bill targeting migrants which could result in more than 80,000 people being kicked out of the country One speaker declared: “I think we need to be conscious that the events of yesterday [i.e. the statements of the nurses] have occurred in a context where we are seeing the rise of fascism globally We are seeing the rise of racism and bigotry across our societies.” Is the NSWNMA seriously claiming that two nurses in Bankstown one of Afghan and the other of Palestinian heritage are the embodiment of the “fascist” threat in Australia While its deportation bill was clearly inspired by Trump the Labor government has also fawned over the new administration in the US Albanese has pledged to collaborate closely with Trump as the fascistic president carries out a war on immigrants the NSWNMA and the union bureaucracy are in alliance with Labor The most stark expression of the reemergence of fascistic violence is the US-Israeli genocide of Palestinians in Gaza The NSWNMA did not bother to mention this at its phoney “hate speech” event and it has not commented on Trump’s repeated declarations that he will clear Gaza of Palestinians and seize it for the US The silence of the NSWNMA mirrors that of Albanese the NSWNMA has issued a handful of tepid and mealy-mouthed statements on Gaza did not even mention that Israel had begun targeted bombings of hospitals As tens of thousands protested this assault on health workers the NSWNMA pathetically “express[ed] our hope and solidarity for all Palestinian and Israeli nurses and midwives who are carrying out their duties under extraordinary circumstances.”  faux neutrality and “both-sidesism” is complicity That has been demonstrated by other unions which collaborates with the NSWNMA to keep health workers isolated from one another and to suppress their struggles have held at least one meeting with the Israeli ambassador signalling their backing for the Israeli onslaught None of the unions have called a single strike or stoppage opposing some of the worst war crimes since the Holocaust That includes the Maritime Union of Australia which has enforced the orderly loading of cargo for the Israeli Zim shipping line which early in the genocide dedicated its entire fleet to the Israeli war effort The NSWNMA event served to legitimise the onslaught against the Bankstown nurses suppress any opposition or questioning over the scale of the campaign against them and ostentatiously signal the bureaucracy’s alignment with the government The event did nothing to counter “hate speech,” though it should be noted that by the end of the day one of the Bankstown nurses targeted had been rushed to a hospital with concerns for his well-being amid a mental health crisis pro-imperialist and anti-working-class character of the union bureaucracy The attitude of the union officials to the Bankstown nurses is essentially their attitude to the working class itself Zionist supporters of the war have attacked health workers None of those health workers have been targeted for making stupid or politically reactionary comments but simply for voicing their opposition to the genocide The NSWNMA has rejected calls that it defend those targeted To the extent that those victimised workers have been defended it has been by the rank-and-file organising independently of the bureaucrats That struggle has to be taken forward and deepened including through the establishment of rank-and-file committees at all hospitals to defend democratic rights and fight the massive assault on public healthcare that has been enforced by Labor governments For half a century I’ve worked with people from many faiths and I trust them completely to fulfil their duty to their patients The hateful and vile comments made by two nurses from Bankstown hospital, captured in an edited film and recorded and broadcast around the world, shocked me to my core. It shocked me as a health professional, it shocked me as a Jewish Australian and it shocked me as a member of our community. I have worked in public hospitals for half a century and, during that time, I have seen a raft of health and social changes occur and I’ve worked alongside doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers from all faiths and cultural backgrounds. They, like me, proudly saw themselves as Australian health professionals first; as people called to serve our communities and provide the care and support we would want our loved ones to receive. 1:28Two NSW nurses stood down after video appears to show they would 'kill' Israeli patients – videoI cannot recall experiencing or hearing anyone expressing comments like these towards patients. That is why this incident has left such a scar on our healthcare community. Read moreWe health professionals have an obligation to care treat and protect our patients’ health and this is an obligation we take immensely seriously This is a sacred responsibility that is universal The shock and concern that many in our communities are expressing particularly whether harm has actually been committed by these two nurses shows the severe harm that this incident has caused to our public healthcare system No one should ever feel that they will be mistreated by a health professional due to their religious or cultural backgrounds; unfortunately we are now required to reinforce this view I have the outmost faith in the New South Wales health department and police to handle this matter with the diligence it requires I understand that one of the nurses involved has apologised for his actions While that is a positive gesture – and I hope it is sincere – the harm of his actions and those of his colleagues must be investigated and the legal system allowed to take its course The alleged perpetrators must not be work in healthcare for the foreseeable future Their claims regarding past acts of hate and violence towards patients at the hospital are being investigated I truly hope that nothing is found to have happened Antisemitism has always existed and there has been a surge in reports but I am heartened by the swift public response calling these actions out and the work of the federal and NSW governments and authorities to tackle it our public healthcare system is essential to our communities and it is one of our proudest national institutions These two nurses are outliers and do not represent the NSW Health workforce. Their comments have shaken me to my core, yet I am proud to be part of the public healthcare system and to care for people of all faiths and backgrounds. We are all Australian and this must always be remembered, and practised, in all instances. As a Jewish Australian I am proud to work in the public hospital system as have many of my relatives over many generations. I know many health workers from many faiths, and I trust them completely to fulfil their duty to their patients. I have great confidence in our public hospitals and our health workers, and I know what has happened is not a true representation of our wonderful health system.
