Forestville Station and NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) crews from Davidson Ingleside and Northern Beaches Headquarters responded to a report of flames in bush near Ralston Avenue Calls to Triple Zero (000) came from up to a kilometre away reporting visible flames and a large column of smoke Firefighters from Forestville Station were first on scene finding a bushfire running along the northern side of Ralston Avenue The fire was in bush immediately adjacent to major power infrastructure for the Northern Beaches converge in a substation at the end of Ralston Avenue which acts as a key distribution point for the entire Northern Beaches power system With backup arriving in the form of multiple NSW RFS crews FRNSW firefighters from Forestville set about suppressing the fire and establishing protection for a home located to the west of the electricity substation The ground fuel was dry after a warm day however the intensity of the fire had been reduced through firefighters efforts and RFS crews established containment The fire was fully extinguished shortly before 10.00pm One bystander told the Northern Beaches Advocate they had seen youths leaving the area and it is understood the cause of the fire may have been a ‘campfire’ that got out of control possibly from aerosol cans being thrown into the fire Firefighters are also understood to have discovered a bag in the vicinity containing suspicious objects Officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command were observed attending the location just after 10.00pm and departing shortly after with evidence bags A NSW Police spokesperson said the cause of the fire was not being treated as suspicious but made no further comment on evidence gathered at the scene or whether an investigation was underway were called to a report of a car rolling down an embankment and landing on its side at Windrush Avenue Reports indicated that the car had come off a residential driveway before rolling down a 3m embankment and coming to rest on its side against a liquid amber tree on the grass verge had come partially out of the driver side window and was trapped under the overturned vehicle The CareFlight Rescue Helicopter was tasked to the incident landing at the County Road Field on Forest Way next to the Belrose Ambulance Station just before 11.15am including Intensive Care Paramedics and NSW Ambulance Inspector Christine Ashman The first paramedic crew arrived on scene shortly after 11.00am along with officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command They found the overturned white 2000 Mazda MPV with the 73-year-old female driver’s upper body partially out of the driver side window and trapped under the car Although the woman did not appear to be bearing the weight of the vehicle it was unstable and rescuers were concerned that any shift in weight could seriously injure her Firefighters from Forestville and Gordon Stations arrived on scene and stabilised the overturned vehicle using wooden blocks under the car and a Tirfor winch attached from the top of the embankment to restrain the vehicle from rolling over onto the woman The driver was then removed from her precarious position under the vehicle and assessed by paramedics Although suffering some shock as a result of the ordeal the woman did not appear to be seriously harmed and was overheard having a feisty debate with paramedics over whether her vehicle was salvageable Despite apparently having escaped any serious injury she was taken by NSW Ambulance to Royal North Shore Hospital for further tests and observation just after midday Firefighters removed the restraints from the overturned car and a tow truck driver was left with the tricky job of removing it from where it had come to rest against the tree at the bottom of the embankment Carefully using a series of winches and small movements righted it onto all four wheels and loaded it onto the back of his truck for removal by 12.15pm 1.30pm this afternoon (Saturday NSW Ambulance responded to a report of a teenage boy injured after falling from his mountain bike while riding with seven mates in bushland near Lizard Rock at Morgan Road including NSW Ambulance Inspector Mark Whittaker and two Special Operations Paramedics near the Slippery Dip Fire Trail and Lizard Rock They were met at the road by teenage friends of the injured 14-year-old boy who had been riding with him on informal bike trails in the bushland and were able to give a precise GPS location of the incident The boy’s friends told paramedics the boy had gone over a large jump (image above) and landed heavily One of the teens who had been filming was able to show them a video of the fall on his phone Paramedics were guided to the boy’s location He was assessed for obvious injuries to both of his wrists Thanks to clear video footage of the incident itself paramedics were also able to assess the boy for other potential injuries They determined he should be treated with spinal precautions and the boy was immobilised rather than walked out A stokes litter was brought in to carry the boy from the bush with his mates once again coming to the fore volunteering to help paramedics carry their friend back to the road Inspector Whittaker (image above) said the boy’s riding companions were proactive in getting help for their friend “The friends of the injured boy were very helpful They rapidly identified the need for their friend to seek medical attention and they were able to identify their exact location when they called Triple Zero (000) they met us at the road and guided us directly to their friend and were able to show us video footage of the incident “Then they helped paramedics to carry their friend back to the ambulance to be taken to hospital They did everything we could ask of them,” praised Inspector Whittaker before being taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital Randwick in a stable condition just after 2.30pm Rider rescued ‘Bear Pit Speaking Competition’ for Year 5 students Schools from the Davidson electorate were recently hosted for the Bear Pit Speaking Competition in the NSW Parliament by local MP Matt Cross Having personally witnessed the popularity and engagement with school children from his colleague James Griffin’s electorate of Manly right) brought the competition to 13 primary schools in the Davidson electorate for its inaugural year The concept began with former NSW Premier and Manly MP Mike Baird, who hosted the first Bear Pit Speaking Competition in 2009. The competition, which sees primary aged students in the electorate of Manly take over the floor of the NSW Legislative Assembly Chamber, has been continued by current Manly MP James Griffin for the past seven years “The Bear Pit is the colloquial term used for the NSW Legislative Assembly Chamber The name is reflective of the sometimes-verbal mayhem stemming from vigorous debate by our NSW politicians “Each year I host the best speakers from Manly Electorate Public and Catholic Schools to pit their skills against each other in the very same forum that passes our NSW laws,” said Mr Griffin Following in the footsteps of the successful debating event started by former NSW Premier Mike Baird and continued by current Manly MP James Griffin Mr Cross said it gave students in his electorate an opportunity to showcase their skills “I’m so proud of our local students It takes courage to stand up and speak in public especially in the exact place the Premier and Ministers speak from “Each and every student gave a speech that was well researched They all told me they were nervous — yet they all spoke with confidence “The 2024 topic was about the importance of friendship Each student’s perspective of friendship was mature thoughtful and inspiring,” praised Mr Cross Each of the students was given an opportunity to talk about the topic friendship specifically ‘how to be a good friend’ The speeches were judged by Ms Gisele Kapterian who each have extensive speech writing experience (image below Mr Cross congratulated Beau on winning the inaugural Davidson Bear Pit Speaking Competition “The judges awarded Beau from Belrose Public School first place for 2024 “I’m delighted to organise this competition in Australia’s oldest parliament so students know they too can be a part of history,” encouraged Mr Cross The Bear Pit Speaking Competition seeks to develop the public speaking skills of students through a series of class and school level events that culminate in been rescued after he flipped his Tesla at Belrose Just before 3.00pm this afternoon (Thursday emergency services responded to Triple Zero (000) calls reporting a car had flipped at Morgan Road Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Narrabeen Station and NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) crews from Belrose and Terrey Hills responded to the scene finding a silver Tesla model Y on its side with the male driver trapped inside was heading westbound on Morgan Road when it appears to have failed to negotiate a 90 degree left-hand turn at the corner of Hilversum Crescent The force of the impact suggested the Tesla was travelling at relatively high speed with wooden pole road barriers ripped from the ground The Tesla appears to have become airborne and sent tumbling including officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command and Traffic and Highway Patrol Command They were unable to access the driver as the car was balanced precariously against another road barrier at danger of rolling onto its roof into a ditch by the side of the road Rescue trained firefighters stabilised the vehicle including parking one of their fire trucks near the car and tying it to the undercarriage of the car to prevent it from rolling into the ditch The car’s battery was also inspected for damage and checked with a thermal imaging camera to ensure there was no fire risk With access to the overturned vehicle made safe paramedics were able to assess the male driver in his mid-40s The man did not appear to have any obvious injuries Empty tequila bottles were observed in the vicinity of the overturned vehicle but his condition suggested he may have suffered a medical episode paramedics removed the man from the car as NSW RFS firefighters maintained fire protection with a hose line and was observed to struggle with paramedics in an apparent attempt to get up The man was sedated and put into an Intensive Care ambulance where he was given further assessment for potential internal injuries Beyond his confused state and cuts and abrasions to his arms and legs from the shattered glass he did not appear to have any life-threatening injuries He was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition shortly after 3.45pm where he will be further assessed and treated It is expected he will also undergo mandatory testing The heavily damaged Tesla was pulled back onto its tyres by a tow truck and once the road was clear RFS firefighters cleaned the roadway of fluid and debris Morgan Road was reopened just after 4.00pm The driver was the sole occupant of the car and no other injuries beaches has been criticised as a firetrap a possible legal minefield and a disaster waiting to happen by protesting residents during an impassioned public meeting The Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council has sought to develop the 71-hectare site off Morgan Road, locally known as Lizard Rock, in Belrose since 2006. The plan, dubbed the Patyegarang proposal was lodged in 2022 amid strong opposition from Northern Beaches Council and residents groups concerned about bushfire risk threats to native species and infrastructure strain Residents are continuing to oppose the development of bushland at Belrose.Credit: Wolter Peeters More than 150 people watched a Sydney North Planning Panel meeting about the plan on Monday said the proposal did not recognise the compounding risks of climate change “The climate-related physical compounding risks are too extreme and insurmountable regardless of any redesign or restructuring of the proposal,” she said the proponent would not only be at risk of future class actions it would also unreasonably expose people and properties to insurance risk NSW Aboriginal Land Council chief executive Heidi Hardy said the Aboriginal Land Rights Act represented a “significant milestone” in the “long journey towards justice and recognition” for Aboriginal people and it acknowledged their rights to reclaim their land “The intention of this act is insufficient if it is not accompanied by the ability to activate and meaningfully use the land … Its true strength lies in activation of land and the empowerment of Aboriginal communities.” “While we need many more homes on the northern beaches poorly serviced and unsuitable for a project of this scale “Adding hundreds of homes into this area would create a firetrap with limited access for evacuation and emergency service.” Environmental scientist Edwina Laginestra said the proposal was “a disaster waiting to happen for future residents our community and the already overworked emergency responders” “I urge the land council and the local and state governments to explore safer like a land swap or a better-located site with the necessary infrastructure.” Morgan Foster Morris told the meeting that her young family was renting in Forestville while they searched for a house to buy in Belrose She cried as she labelled the proposal a “disgusting shameful and lazy effort to provide crap housing to the future generation who “We are presumably the target market for this development and we think it is a gross and plunderous misuse of our limited natural bushland spaces.” The Planning Department will later make a recommendation to Planning Minister Paul Scully to make a decision Scully said that given he was the potential consent authority on the proposal he would allow the panel to complete its independent assessment and await their referral Get the day’s breaking news, entertainment ideas and a long read to enjoy. 'Lizard Rock’ along Morgan Road in Belrose Council strongly opposes the planning proposal to rezone land along Morgan Road in Belrose to permit development for 450 dwellings for its destruction of natural bushland among a range of other concerns The Sydney North Planning Strategic Planning Panel and the NSW Department of Planning and Environment recently approved the public exhibition of the planning proposal The proposal and associated documentation is available to view on the Department’s website The proposal would allow the destruction of around 45 football size fields of bushland to build 450 homes surplus to any housing targets The new homes would be built in precious bushland and residents would face extreme bushfire risk Council has warned that the planning proposal should be reconsidered in view of significant planning Council has repeatedly advised the Department that the planning proposal by Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council (MLALC) does not demonstrate strategic or site-specific merit and should be rejected Council wrote to federal and state MPs and relevant ministers to negotiate an alternate solution and financial model so that the MLALC can Way Shortly before 11.45am this morning (Friday NSW Ambulance paramedics at Belrose Ambulance Station heard the sound of a collision and went outside to find a silver tray-top utility had crashed through the metal fence of the station at Forest Way Paramedics found the 66-year-old male driver They commenced treatment and called for immediate assistance with a Belrose-based NSW Ambulance that was nearby retasked off a lower priority job and returning to station who is a highly qualified Intensive Care Paramedic was called to the incident location and the CareFlight Rescue Helicopter was tasked from Westmead NSW Police conveyed the CareFlight specialist medical team to the incident location at Forest Way Fire and Rescue NSW Forestville and Narrabeen Stations responded to the incident scene setting up a hose line for fire protection in case leaking oil and fuel caught alight with the man trapped in the vehicle With the assistance of rescue firefighters the semiconscious man was removed from the vehicle and loaded into a NSW Ambulance Unsure of whether the man may have experienced a medical episode prior to the incident he was treated for a head injury and possible internal and spinal injuries The man was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital by road in a serious but stable condition just before 12.30pm with the CareFlight medical team aboard the ambulance to assist with his treatment en route Firefighters neutralised the fluid spills with absorbent material and ensured there was no further risk of ignition from the vehicle It appears the utility may have had some kind of collision or near miss with another vehicle at the end of a southbound merging lane to the north of Wearden Road partially tearing the tray from the utility Ausgrid was called to repair a low hanging live wire and assess the damage to the splintered pole The vehicle reportedly became airborne briefly as it left the road careering along the footpath for approximately 30m and through the dark-green metal fence of the Belrose Ambulance Station before coming to rest on its driver’s side no pedestrians were on the footpath at the time The incident caused extensive traffic delays for southbound traffic along Forest Way with two lanes initially closed by officers from Northern Beaches Police Area Command A Transport Management Centre traffic commander remained on scene to manage the incident until the vehicle could be removed by a tow truck Southbound traffic remained heavy as of 3.00pm The incident comes just over a week after another vehicle rolled onto the footpath following a three-car collision only metres away at the intersection of Forest Way and Glen Street That incident also saw the driver taken to hospital and extensive traffic delays (image above) Jun 30, 2022 | , A fire broke out at a waste recycling facility at Belrose early this morning 30 June) firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Forestville Station responded to a report of smoke in the vicinity of the Bare Creek Bike Park at Crozier Road they forced entry through a gate at the bike park and confirmed a significant amount of smoke calling for additional crews from Gordon and Dee Why Stations They commenced searching bushland for the source of the fire and redirected responding firefighters to nearby Challenger Drive Dee Why firefighters located the source of the smoke was an active large fire at the Benedict Recycling Centre with a waste pile approximately 30m x 30m well alight The distance of the fire from a source of water resulted in FRNSW Gordon and Forestville crews setting up a relay system to supply their water to the Dee Why pump’s Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS) While FRNSW crews were first on scene to establish initial fire control the location of the fire was within the response area of the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) which also responded with several pumpers and two water tankers from brigades With the fire contained but not controlled FRNSW brigades were relieved by NSW RFS crews and left the scene shortly before 5.45am The fire was deep-seated within a large refuse pile With the assistance of heavy machinery and plant operators already at the site firefighters set about breaking down the pile spreading it out and systematically extinguishing the fire The process of fully extinguishing the fire took several hours not being completed until just after 11.00am One RFS firefighter received a minor injury that required first aid treatment but did not require an ambulance According to the Benedict Recycling Centre website alleviating some concern from local residents about possible hazardous materials The centre was closed today as a result of the fire but is expected to reopen tomorrow (Friday 01 July) Jan 30, 2023 | , An exciting new bike park has been officially opened this morning (Monday Following on from the success of the world-class Bare Creek Bike Park at nearby Crozier Road is designed to give beginner-intermediate riders a place to have fun and improve their skills Northern Beaches Council CEO Ray Brownlee said the response to Bare Creek Bike Park along with the intense demand on other mountain biking facilities meant Council was looking at supporting mountain biking activity as an increasing priority Keen to continue a winning formula from Bare Creek, Council continued to partner with Northern Beaches mountain bike advocacy and advisory group Trail Care Instead of engaging an external contractor to construct the bike park design Council’s own landscape team did the construction work signalling an intention to create the skills and capacity for trail building in-house Davidson MP Jonathan O’Dea said the NSW Government handed the land over to Council for $1.00 for the sole purpose it be used for recreation Mr O’Dea was also instrumental in the development of the nearby Bare Creek Bike Park working with Northern Beaches Council to overcome a number of obstacles that almost derailed its construction “This project and the other bike park [Bare Creek] which I worked hard on for well over a decade are a real sense of satisfaction as I retire from politics in March as a local member to see both of these facilities delivered for the benefit of the community “These things don’t happen easily There was quite a process of consultation and discussion and I pay tribute to John Colet School for being an active part of that discussion and dialogue I got a phone call from a lady who lived here 33 years ago The state government compulsorily acquired the property because they were going to build a TAFE here having gone through a bit of pain 33 years ago to know that this facility was being returned to the public as a recreational bike park seeing an extra community facility,” said Mr O’Dea With Mr O’Dea standing down at the upcoming election, his hopeful successor, Liberal candidate for Davidson Matt Cross was also in attendance to signal ongoing support for community recreation initiatives such as bike parks Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan, who last week confirmed he would be running for the neighbouring seat of Wakehurst said that after considering possible uses for the land a beginner-intermediate bike park as a skills precursor to Bare Creek was the ideal use “This land was let go by the Department of Education and Jonathan lobbied for Council to take it over for $1.00 for recreation purposes It started off as maybe being a park or basketball courts “I bought the CEO and others up here and said Jonathan’s done something quite special with Council and other agencies with the Bare Creek Bike Park It’s an extraordinary asset to our community “This is a great lead-in, we need somewhere for the kids at other levels to come and safely learn and not destroy bushland “Staff, to their credit, got on board and said, it was a really good idea. What I found out today is something pretty cool, we have used leftover materials from other projects such as the new Narrabeen Lagoon bridge “950 tonnes of excavated material from local building sites has come onto the site here Thank you to Council staff for that idea and using those materials “We need more bike facilities around the area and we’re working on that,” promised Mayor Regan Matt Ward from Trail Care said he was thrilled Council is supporting and investing in the growing sport of mountain bike riding “The new park provides awesome opportunities for kids and new riders to progress Perhaps they’ve never ridden a bike on dirt before; here they can build confidence on corners It’s the ideal stepping stone towards other Council facilities like Bare Creek and Manly Dam “Working in collaboration with Council on this project has led to great outcomes bringing together amazing landscaping work with local trail design knowledge The end result is one of the best looking skills parks I’ve seen,” said Mr Ward Council workers who helped build the bike park were at this morning’s opening justifiably proud of their achievement as they observed eager children take to the track Council staff said they were pleased the bike park would offer a ‘challenging opportunity’ for beginner riders but stressed it was not designed as a completely risk-free track and proper safety equipment must be worn by riders at all times A staff member said that while they obviously hoped nobody would be hurt on the track the park would offer little enjoyment to riders Acknowledgement of the need for good track design for inherent safety balanced with enjoyment and the need for riders to make their own assessment of skill and risk is a sign that Council may be heading in the direction of making the Northern Beaches a tourism magnet for mountain bike riders The Wyatt Avenue Bike Park is located at 4 Wyatt Avenue Dec 29, 2023 | , A body found at Belrose is believed to be that of a man reported The Greens Councillor Kristyn Glanville (image above) Cr Glanville plans to introduce a motion that will seek to reward responsible pet owners who invest in measures such as obedience classes “The purpose of this motion is to encourage responsible dog ownership and identify any further opportunities to set local residents up for success at raising their dog “Councillors are frequently contacted by residents via email and social media regarding issues concerning off-leash dogs in areas which are not designated off-leash areas or incidents concerning dogs with behavioural issues “These complaints raise concerns about the safety or environmental impacts of those dogs on other walkers The next meeting of Northern Beaches Council the motion is likely to be considered is 28 May 2024
