The METRONET Ellenbrook Line is set to give people living and working in the north-eastern suburbs of Perth better transport choice and faster journeys Jointly funded by the Federal and Western Australian Governments the $1.65 billion Morley-Ellenbrook Line is the biggest public transport project delivered in Perth in more than 16 years Starting at Bayswater Station on the Midland Line the new 21km line travels along the centre of Tonkin Highway along the western side of Drumpellier Drive and ends in Ellenbrook Ellenbrook is one of Perth’s fastest growing regions with annual growth figures forecast to be more than 6.5 per cent the corridor between Morley and Ellenbrook has the highest usage of cars compared to other Perth corridors the METRONET Ellenbrook Line is set to create a more interconnected city with better transport The line will majorly reduce vehicle usage in north-eastern Perth by reducing travel times on public transport by up to 50 per cent and slashing travel times to a 30-minute train journey between Ellenbrook and the CBD It will also provide direct links to Midland and Perth Airport as well as better connections to Whiteman Park and the Swan Valley “The 21-kilometre Ellenbrook Line will give people living and working in Perth’s north-eastern suburbs more transport choice and halve the travel time to Perth for those travelling from Ellenbrook,” a METRONET spokesperson said Whiteman Park and Ellenbrook will serve these growing communities the New Bayswater Station will create connections to improve connectivity with the Midland Each station is set to enable the development of the surrounding precincts to provide access to more housing tourism and recreation opportunities over the next 30 years helping shape these growing neighbourhoods into vibrant new communities “Unique features of these station include new public spaces that prioritise pedestrian movement between transport corridors and the creation of vibrant public spaces,” the spokesperson said “Wayfinding was given significant consideration and the new station precincts will give visitors generous pathways shade arbour canopies and interpretive signage “This includes positioning carparks and drop-off points close to the station.” Over 6,500 jobs have been created as part of this project stimulating local employment opportunities Around 150,000 sleepers and 96,000 tonnes of ballast were used in the construction of the line commuters in the north-east will be able ride to the city using a SmartRider for only $4.16 The first train to Ellenbrook hit the tracks in late-August marking the beginning of a four-week program of rigorous testing and commissioning The program was undertaken to ensure all infrastructure and systems are operating efficiently and trains will run safely and smoothly Following testing and commissioning is driver familiarisation before the line enters passenger service from December 2024 One point of focus for the project is working more sustainably to reduce carbon impacts of materials by more than 15 per cent and to improve resource efficiency and support a circular economy by using recycled materials “Each new state-of-the-art station is built with future sustainable growth in mind for the precincts surrounding the new stations and rail corridor,” the spokesperson said A number of initiatives have been implemented to help reach these sustainability targets The project has committed to using 20 per cent Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) in imported topsoil used for landscaping the trial is expected to set a precedent that supports the use of FOGO and grows confidence to embrace this and other new materials while encouraging innovative landscape practices Crushed recycled concrete (CRC) is being trailled for the base asphalt layer in Ballajura and Noranda station car parks CRC is made of concrete debris from construction and demolition projects The use of CRC aims to reduce materials going to landfill and result in reduced carbon emissions The amount of concrete used on site is also being reduced through a hollow core noise wall system that contains 30 per cent less embodied carbon than standard noise wall panels Approximately 770 hollow core panels have been installed on the line so far The new stations as part of the Morley-Ellenbrook line are: Morley Station is located under the Broun DOG owners and residents near a Bennett Springs park have raised concerns after an anonymous letter was found threatening to drop poison bait. The letter, now removed, was found two weeks ago taped to a bench at Bennett Springs Sportfield Oval, located on Bennett Springs Drive next to Beechboro Christian School. “Be aware of dog baits placed specifically in this area randomly to control unresponsible owners of dogs off the lead which seems to be a constant thing on this sport field oval,” the letter began. The author then referenced sections of the Dog Act 1976 regarding dog control. “If you want your dog’s off the lead, go to the Whiteman Park dog exercise area. This current practice is against the rules and regulations of the Dog Act 1976 WA. “In accordance with Section 31 and 32 of the Dog Act 1976 dogs are supposed to be on the lead and under control at all times on a sports field oval which is not currently happening,” it stated. However, section 32 of the Act stipulates a dog can be off lead if “a competent person is in reasonable proximity to the dog.” It goes on to define a competent person as someone who is liable for the control of the dog, capable of controlling it, and is carrying a lead, chain, cord, or harness. In response to concerns raised by parkgoers, the City of Swan installed four temporary signs around the oval’s perimeter with short statements. “Dogs are not under control if they chase or rush towards people or other animals.” “Our furry friends need exercise too, play responsibly” An RSPCA WA spokesperson said it had received a report about the threatening letter at the Bennett Springs Sportsfield Oval but acknowledged there were no reports of suspected or actual dog baiting in the area. “Intentionally leaving baits for off-lead dogs could lead to a charge of animal cruelty which attracts a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $50,000 fine,” the spokesperson said. City of Swan Mayor Tanya Richardson said the city was not aware of any baiting in the area. “When the city was notified about the sign, staff attended the oval and removed it. Our rangers proactively patrol parks and we encourage dog owners to speak to them if they have any concerns.” She said if anyone found evidence of baiting, they should contact the RSPCA or police. Bystander Tanya was having dinner at a tavern in the north-eastern suburb of Bennett Springs at about 7:30pm when she noticed a flooded area of road near a shopping centre. "I went out to find the street covered in water," she said. "We were standing there thinking who to call to get help when a car drove over the area and nosedived. Bystander Tanya said the car's driver was in shock after the sinkhole opened up. (Facebook) Tanya said bystanders hauled the female driver out of the driver's seat. "The young girl in the car was looking confused," she said. "We yelled at her to climb up to the passenger door and they pulled her out. "She was quite calm, not injured ... just a little shocked." Authorities were alerted to the incident, but Tanya said it was some time before they were able to take control of the situation. "It was ages before the water was shut off and they were able to pull the car out," she said. Footage of the incident shows the dramatic moment when the small Honda Jazz appears to sink further into the bubbling sinkhole after the driver had escaped. The car is later pulled out of the hole using a chain attached to a truck. A WA Water Corporation spokesman said a water main had burst, and although it was not owned by the corporation, Water Corp staff had helped repair the damage. "Our crews responded to lend a hand," he said. "But it wasn't one of our assets — I think it was some sort of firefighting main owned by the shopping centre." The sinkhole is believed to be the result of a burst water main. Ongoing construction isn’t slowing down tourism at Bennet Spring State park near Lebanon According to the Missouri Department of Conservation more than 60,000 trout tags have already been issued to anglers trying to catch some 120,000 fish at the park the department has been busy with a $40 million dollar renovation to the park and fish hatchery improvements that include a new intake structure MDC Hatchery Systems Manager Clint Hale says they “appreciate the public’s patience with this project as this renovation will help MDC provide Bennett anglers with a quality fishing experience for many years to come.” Approximately 450,000 fish are produced at the park each year bringing in hundreds of anglers and their families generating a large economic ripple effect in meals Construction and fishing have proven to be compatible this summer at Bennett Spring State Park The construction-related signs and the sounds of heavy machinery at Bennett Spring are definite indicators that the multi-year renovation of the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) fish hatchery at this popular state park are underway there are also signs that trout fishing – one of the park’s most popular pastimes – also is going strong more than 60,000 trout tags have been issued to anglers to fish for the more than 120,000 trout that have been stocked at the park thus far this year the fishing at Bennett Spring has been great,” said Ben Havens the manager at MDC’s Bennett Spring Hatchery “The weather and water conditions have been very favorable for fishing and many anglers have had great success during their visit to the park.” The construction underway that park visitors have undoubtedly noticed is a $40 million renovation of the MDC hatchery at Bennett This project includes a new intake structure Cahills Construction of Rolla is the contractor for this project A big reason fishing and construction have been co-existing at Bennett Spring this summer is because of the connectivity of MDC’s cold-water hatchery system Bennett Spring Hatchery normally produces up to 450,000 trout annually from egg to fingerling size and stocks 325,000 in the park’s waters each year The reason there are still trout to catch at Bennett Spring – despite the reduction in fish production at the hatchery – is that MDC’s other cold-water hatcheries in the state have picked up the slack The bulk of the trout for this summer’s fishing has come from MDC’s Montauk Hatchery (Dent County) from MDC’s Shepherd of the Hills Hatchery (Taney County) Stocking of the stream within park boundaries does not occur each evening (which was the stocking schedule before construction started) but MDC staff still stocks the stream several times each week Though the frequency of stockings at Bennett has changed the total number of trout stocked at the park each week has not changed Numbers of fish stocked are posted in the Bennett Spring Park Store we’re trying to maintain a regular stocking schedule and provide all the other angler amenities that make Bennett such a special fishing destination for thousands of people each year,” said MDC Hatchery Systems Manager Clint Hale we appreciate the public’s patience with this project We know the park they’re seeing this summer is different than the one that trout anglers have enjoyed for generations this renovation project will help MDC provide Bennett anglers with a quality fishing experience for many years to come.” The significant economic impact that trout fishing has on Missouri is exemplified at Bennett Spring This stocking activity creates fishing activity which has a large economic ripple effect in the form of money that gets spent in the area on meals Bennett Spring is more than just a fishing location Many families also enjoy walking along the raceways viewing the trout being raised to stocking size Havens will also be glad when the fish-viewing aspect of Bennett Spring returns “Bennett Spring offers many people a wonderful opportunity to fish and enjoy the outdoors,” he said “The investment in improving the hatchery today will allow us to continue to provide great opportunities for years to come.” ***Pic caption: Construction signs and fish hatchery signs (both pictured above) can be seen at MDC’s Bennett Spring Fish Hatchery this summer A hatchery renovation project is underway at state parks across the state including Bennett Springs State Park near Lebanon And the Missouri of Department of Conservation has put together a short video of clips from previous year's openers as opposed to showcasing the vast other array of angling opportunities in the state soothing sound of an air raid siren which signals the "all clear" for Missouri's waiting trout anglers to have at it the video is a relentless highlight reel of trouty goodness: crowds of immense and almost unbelievable proportions anglers standing ass-to-ass in an interminable line along the edge of a spillway dam trout being transferred in one swift motion directly from the water to white plastic construction buckets frankenstein-sized rainbows from a river that could never possibly produce such a fish the video seems like a farce—perhaps a bit of sketch comedy pulled from an old Saturday Night Live episode but the you've-got-to-be-fucking-kidding-me banjo music and the endless array of glory shots of stringers loaded with fresh-from-the-truck trout the four parks see crowds that swell as high as 10,000 anglers with over 25,000 trout dumped into the river just in time for the opener—including several hundred "lunkers" (those aforementioned frankenstein bows) This spectacle in which these trout-seekers are just short of literally shooting fish in a barrel isn't just anathema to elitist masochists that like to chase native fish in wild places with bits of deer hair and chicken feathers lashed to a tiny hook it contradicts the idea of fishing being a sporting pursuit and it is an offense to the cornerstones of our fishing heritage which demand that object of our chase be treated with some degree of reverence or measure of respect How you spend your time with your friends and family is your prerogative And the kids in the video all seem to be having a great time I'm not here to degrade anyone's traditions fat invasive fish from the shoulder-to-shoulder shitshow that is the town pools during chinook season on New York's Salmon River if standing on the edge of a spillway dam pulling trout out of a glorified arcade crane machine is the way you and your buddies like to spend the first day of March I have fished Bennett Springs as a child MANY times and still go back on occasion in the summer when visiting family in the area (I would avoid opening day at all cost) What kills me is the money making scheme that these parks are Bennett Springs is actually a very beautiful stream from where it bubbles up from the ground Every time I go I can't help but laugh at the ungodly amount of "trout" that are in the stream It is not uncommon to have 5-8 trout swimming through your legs as you move around I call them "trout" because they are missing their front pectoral fins Occasionally you can pull a Rainbow that has some nice spots and color I feel if properly managed it could hold wild fish You have to pay $3.50 (or it may be more now) to fish for the day God forbid they ever try and turn Crane Creek into something like this....last remaining strain of pure McCloud Rainbows It is scary how proud they are of this too....I guess to each their own and I am just some snob that has been exposed to wild fish in PA Trout fishing in the trout parks is not about money https://www.flickr.com/photos/riverrelief/31976762400 Unfortunately, I've not had the pleasure of fishing in Missouri. I have, however heard many great things about the fishing opportunities there, especially in the Ozarks, and I doubt none of them. I'd also agree fully that anything that helps bring kids into the sport should be welcomed -- and there's no doubt the trout parks help spark interest in fishing. And as it says, have at it. You're the one getting offended for no reason. I've been to opening day at some of these places. It's catching. Not fishing. It doesn't teach the kids respect for the fish or the process. It's no big deal if that's what people are into but it's also no big deal to poke a little fun at it. Meanwhile, hopefully you or I will be standing in water that doesn't include another person in sight... right? Most of all I hope that one of the kids (I have none, I have a dog) that were in that video don't read what you have decided to take the time to write so eloquently and passively insulting. It would be a shame for your opinion to erode the interest in our sport before some people even have a driver's license to go fish elsewhere, wouldn't it? Dude, lighten up. It pokes fun at that ridiculous spectacle, noting that everyone should do what they want and that the kids were having fun. It just says it should be called something other than fishing because of how silly it is. My gues is it was mainly supposed to be funny. It's a shame I can not share this blog with others due to your foul mouth. Trout are an invasive species in Missouri. Can't expect much more than that with a fish that never belonged in the Midwest. It sure is nice not to have to drive over 12 hours to catch them in their native habitat though. You really are not worth much more of my time making any more commits on this subject. Keep it between 10 and 2 Too bad I guess my comment didn't make it past their gates..... You sound like a schmuck I couldn't possibly fish with, much less share the beer. This is true. They do help keep some nice little streams less crowded. Words: Todd Tanner.   Images: Tim Romano and Jeremy Roberts. The air is thick with excitement as anglers prepare their rods and reels and folks at a couple of Missouri's fish hatcheries are raring for the start of trout season but March 1 marks the first day of catch-and-keep fishing season at Roaring River State Park near Cassville Bennett Spring State Park near Lebanon and Montauk State Park near Salem Roaring River Hatchery Manager Paul Spurgeon said the damage from an April 2021 major flood has been repaired.  "The stream is all put back together from the floods that they had a year ago," Spurgeon said More: Bennett Spring State Park sees 1,250 trout tags sold March 1 with more expected opening day Roaring River has already been stocked with trout raised on site — something it had not been able to do because of renovations. Water was drained from the hatchery ahead of the two-year renovations and existing fish were moved to hatcheries at Shepherd of the Hills Montauk State Park and Bennett Springs State Park Those hatcheries helped stock Roaring River State Park during the construction overhaul and through the 2021 season Related: Department of Conservation stocks 80,000 rainbow trout in Missouri lakes "The fishermen will probably enjoy that because we know that they always like our fish the best The 2021 opening day saw 1,700 tags sold at Roaring River and Spurgeon wondered if they'll see those high numbers again on March 1.  "We were very popular last year when the pandemic started to open things back up," Spurgeon said.  Bennett Spring Fish Hatchery Manager Ben Havens said he anticipates anywhere from 1,500 to 2,000 tags to be sold on opening day "Opening day is kind of like the Daytona 500 of trout fishing in Missouri," Havens said we have our different fishing events and so forth." Interest in trout fishing appears to be increasing it's given people a wider view of what is available to them close to home," Havens said provide a really good opportunity for families to come out and enjoy the outdoors recreate and go fishing generally close to home for most folks." Bennett Spring is in its first year of a design and data collection phase which is part of a three-year renovation project The aim is to bring the hatchery up to speed with modernization and technology while also providing expanded safety and an overall better trout fishing experience Anglers and park visitors may not notice too many changes this year but Havens said they should expect them in 2023 and 2024 as operations move forward "I think we'll have a great season," Havens said before jokingly adding: "I say that every year Missouri's catch-and-keep trout fishing season begins 6:30 a.m and anglers are required to have a fishing permit and a daily trout tag to fish in state trout parks unless you're at Maramec Spring Park which allows five and the minimum length is 15 inches for brown trout You can purchase a fishing permit prior to the season's opening from several vendors across the state or online at mdc.mo.gov/buypermits Daily trout tags are located at the state park concession stores.  You can tune into opening day activities at Bennett Spring and Roaring River by visiting  mostateparks.com Sara Karnes is an Outdoors Reporter with the Springfield News-Leader. Follow along with her adventures on Twitter and Instagram @Sara_Karnes I thought I was writing a travel piece on glamorous camping or “glamping,” as the advertisement for Missouri's Bennett Spring State Park called it But the story took a turn and has little to do with glamping a howling storm defied the badge on my tent guaranteeing to keep us dry We had five kayaks and launched into our adventure right after lunch Walt 3 is our son-in-law and Walt 2 is his dad Twelve-year-old Jamison is Walt 3's cousin's son Walt 2 got instructions from the camp office along with a highlighted map of the 7-mile stretch of the Niangua River we planned to run Knowing it can be hard to recognize a pull-out from the river arched bridge spanning the river when we drove one vehicle there It may seem like a small mistake: mixing up the pull-out with the put-in But none of us were familiar with the river But I realized I was going against the current and turned around “Are you sure you're going the right way?” my husband Nobody thought to check the map or compass on Walt 3's phone like several other rivers I've floated in Missouri flows from clear deep pools to swift little thrills Jamison admitted that kayaking on a stream was trickier than on the lake where he'd earned his Scouting merit badge He wove from one side of the river to the other until Walt 2's patient tutoring had him shooting through the runs optimally centered Giant uprooted trees channeled the river flow and a green tapestry with the first hints of fall colors clothed the landscape Fearless fish teased us as we floated overhead Great blue herons and bald eagles surveyed us The online information called the 7-mile stretch of the Niangua “flat”: suitable for cumbersome rafts The regular rapids and fast channels raised misgivings in me I estimated that we were floating at about 4 mph passing through the spectacular scenery all too fast my shoulder muscles burned and I was eager for a glimpse of that arched bridge I didn't remember a westerly stretch on the map We'd become separated over a quarter-mile of the river A lavender dusk settled on the quiet landscape Insects tuned up their night music as the stars winked in evening sky Warm lights from scattered cabins shone over the water We paddled with bows almost touching the stern of the kayak ahead Walt 3's cellphone battery was low and had no service We pulled onto a rocky sandbar and gathered in prayer to know what was best to do and that our loved ones back at camp would know we were OK Walt 3 tried his phone's GPS one more time Service flickered just long enough to drop a pin “We're nowhere near Bennett Spring!” He tried to send a text assuring the others of our safety with the locator pin We'd put in at the pull-out and gotten farther downstream with every stroke We agreed that we must stay the night on the sandbar It was only supposed to be a three-hour tour Jamison was too young to appreciate the "Gilligan's Island" humor Jamison and I dug shallow holes in the damp Jamison discovered that a spark flew when he hit rocks together Despite the grand pile of leaves and sticks we gathered the cool little sparks died as soon as they were born I knew the forecast low temperature was in the 40s A meteor shower streaked the heavens with darts of light we'd curl up in a hole or beside a kayak to wonder at our own nothingness under the splendor of the universe and watch the stars fling themselves from the heavens The crickets tuned a gentle melody and coyotes howled Now and then small red eyes glowed near the riverbank since he had no natural “insulation” around his core After 20 minutes in that position he declared He would rest his chin on my shoulder until his knees buckled wake enough to straighten his legs and begin the tortuous process again “It's All Goin' South on a North-bound River” will surely be a hit with Walt 2 being a sound engineer Jeff and I cuddled more tightly than was comfortable for the others But our backs would eventually ache so acutely that we had to sit down we'd stretch our shirts over our knees and bury our faces in our chests My vulnerability invited God to inspect my naked soul wafting its damp fingers over our bare skin We pulled our arms inside our shirts and fastened the lifejackets on the outside At least our bathing suits were getting dry At last the night began to draw back; the crickets' song faded Walt 3 saw where he could get up the bank enough to try for a signal Jeff wanted to paddle upstream to the civilization we had seen a few miles back who has a lot of trouble with his shoulders admitted he couldn't fight up those rapids We prayed again and decided to stay together We built a rock cairn with an arrow pointing down river crystalline pools with towering limestone cliffs Our skin soaked in the morning warmth like we were paddling into Paradise The river became trickier a little farther below our night's stopping place We'd probably have overturned if we'd gone farther in the dark We'd paddled about 2 miles when we heard an outboard motor just before a johnboat appeared around a bend Walt 3 was ahead and beached his boat after a moment's conversation right before I jumped up and hugged that trooper He radioed ahead for our family to meet us there Our family had notified the authorities at dark I'll do it again someday with glamping gear
