the primary school was nominated by members of the community to receive a Bayside Council plaque
Picture suppliedBexley Public School has been put on a pedestal for its 138-year history
The primary school's earliest beginnings date back to 1887 - a true sign of deserved recognition of its longevity
The school received a blue plaque in the Bayside Council Historical Markers Inaugural Program
which notes sites of historical and cultural importance to the area
It also aims to create visibility and awareness of the history and cultural heritage of the Local Government Area to build a sense of belonging
The program was inspired by London's Blue Plaques scheme
Five sites were selected in St George: Tempe House at Wolli Creek
Wilson's Farm House (Cottage) at Rockdale and Botany Public School
Sixteen nominations were received (including two for Bexley Public) and assessed by a selection panel that included local history and heritage specialists
Bexley Public School's long-serving teacher and keen history buff
applied to have the 1924 building recognised
Fellow local history enthusiast and researcher Olga Sedneva nominated the school's 1887 building
"One of the big criteria was connectivity with the community
and the school has a strong history of that," Mrs Core said
"I am interested in history and a St George Historical Society member," she said
"I've also been at the school quite a while
My knowledge of the school broadened while I was archiving material
The plaque was installed on the Forest Road entrance to the school and is designed to catch the eye of those walking past
'First opened with one teacher in 1887 on the western side of Forest Road
the school became the centre of local social life by hosting public meetings
fetes and athletic competitions on its grounds.' A QR code brings up more information about the school
"[It] stands as a cornerstone of our community's history
symbolising the enduring values of education and community spirit," he said
"Its long-standing presence not only reflects the evolution of learning in our community but also fosters a sense of belonging and shared identity among generations of families."
Original Bexley Public School buildingBack in timeThe school opened in 1887 with 103 students
the school's Patriotic Flag appeal was commenced
This demonstrated the effort and generosity of residents and businesses
Those who made donations had their names embroidered on the flag
which was to be draped over a tablet with the names of 'Old Boys of this School who offered their lives in defence of the Empire in the Great European War
It is more than likely that this flag was restored at Rockdale Town Hall
The ornate wooden tablet with gold-leaf lettering is in the old assembly hall in the current school administration building
After the Department of Education acquired the property on the other side of Forest Road opposite the original building
In 1995 came the amalgamation of the school on the eastern side of Forest Road
and 1917 buildings are now on the site of St Mary and St Mina's Coptic Orthodox College

Bexley's Greenwood Cottage volunteers celebrated the retirement of long-serving volunteer Martin Spiteri
who dedicated more than 20 years of service to the aged care community centre
Mr Spiteri has been a devoted volunteer of The Benevolent Society's Greenwood Cottage
which provides community activities for older Australians within Bayside Council
he supported residents by helping on the bus that takes people to and from the cottage
"I like looking after the people," Mr Spiteri said
Service Support Coordinator Cherie Damoulakis says he will be missed
"Martin has been there to support not only our clients we serve but also the other volunteers through the ups and downs of life," she said
and I know the great friendships he's made through volunteering here will last a lifetime"
Greenwood Cottage is just as much a place for the clients as it is for volunteers to establish connections and socialise
Volunteers can give back to the community after years in the full-time paid workforce
Although retirement or embracing a slower lifestyle can be an aspiring goal for the majority
Ms Damoulakis says it can sometimes feel lonely
"It can be hard for people aged in their 60s or 70s to make new friends
so volunteering is a great way to give back and stay connected with others," Ms Damoulakis said
"We have individuals who have worked in hospitality
in the education system...at Sydney Airport."
The Benevolent Society's Director of Ageing Carers and the National Support Centre
says that without dedicated community members' tireless efforts
many initiatives like volunteering would not be possible
"Volunteers are the heart and soul of Greenwood Cottage
an institution which has been running for over 20 years," he said
"Community-led initiatives like this are important for older Australians to feel like they are part of a community
We couldn't run this centre without them and the support from the local council."

mixed-use building that will eventually house restaurants
apartments and a public parking garage is taking shape in Bexley
Construction is underway at the mixed-use development
Columbus-based Continental Development Ventures is the lead developer on the project
The project, which the city approved in early 2024, includes about 232 apartments, more than 11,000 square feet for restaurants and retail shops, roughly 12,500 square feet for medical offices and about 300 parking spaces in a public parking garage, according to a city website about The Fitzgerald
Crews have built the structural portion up to the third floor on the front of the building
which is where the commercial space will be
Site foundation work is ongoing for the back two-thirds of The Fitzgerald
Bexley Building and Zoning Director Matt Klingler told The Dispatch on Wednesday
A large crane was erected Tuesday directly off East Main Street
where it will remain for the next six to eight weeks as trusses and other wood materials are delivered for framing
Trusses are expected to go up in the next two weeks
The commercial spaces are expected to be completed first
with the residential portion finishing in summer 2026
There are no known tenants for the commercial or medical office spaces
The nearly 3-acre site, on the north side of East Main Street between the Bexley Gateway development and Bexley Square, was formerly home to a 60-unit apartment complex that previously housed Trinity Seminary students with families. Demolition of the former structures was completed in the fall, according to the city website

local businesses and residents decided to make a stand and save their town centre
Commonwealth and ANZ all abandoned the Bexley shopping strip by the Town Centre leaving Bexley without any bank
The void in the provision of banking products and financial services
to approach Bendigo Bank to set up a branch in Bexley
the community formed the Bexley Community Bank Steering Committee
Their aim was to raise $650,000 to establish a Bexley Community Bank as a Bendigo Bank franchise
The Bendigo Bank head office required the steering committee to carry out a feasibility study gauging the support for a community bank in the Bexley Town Centre
The study determined the level of bank business local people would be prepared to bring across to a community bank branch in Bexley
"This entire campaign to date has been based on community spirit
we now have to determine whether it's a commercial reality," Bexley Community Bank Steering Committee spokesman
The steering committee delivered 7,000 studies to local Bexley households on November 5 and 6
Public meetings were also held in the Bexley Anglican Church to keep residents up-to-date on the campaign
After the findings of the study were presented to the Bendigo Bank it was determined that there was strong community support to open a community franchise branch of the bank in Bexley
After an initial feasibility study in 2002
it took just shy of two years to raise the required $650,000 to establish the branch
During this time the Bexley Chamber of Commerce
and a many number of volunteers door-knocked
and gave generously of their time to bring about the branch's opening
The Bexley Community Bank opened supported by a colourful street celebration on June 18
Since then the branch has become central to the commercial and community life of Bexley
based on the 'profit with purpose' model of putting resources back into the community
Today the branch team comprises the following staff Anthony Georgiou (Branch Manager)
Charbel Tobbagi (Home Lending Specialist/Customer Relationship Manager)
Tina Axougas (Customer Relationship Officer)
Isela Caicedo Flores (Customer Relationship Officer)
"Our team are all St George and Sutherland Shire locals
who understand local business & value your banking relationship," Mr Georgiou said
"Our products include a full range of personal and business facilities including transaction accounts
"The last 20 years could not have been possible without the ongoing support of our customers
Thank you for entrusting us to service your banking and financial needs now and into the future
We look forward to welcoming you to our branch."
Speaking at the Centenary celebrations of the Bexley Chamber of Commerce earlier this year
Jeff Tullock said the chamber's proudest achievement of the past 100 years was being instrumental in raising $650,000 to establish the community bank at a time when all other financial institutions deserted Bexley
"Around 2000 Bexley Town centre had a Commonwealth
Westpac and ANZ bank as well as United Permanent and St George Building Societies," Mr Tullock said
"The benefit of full service Community Banks such as ours in Bexley can't be overstated
I often marvel at how our bank's staff remember the names of each and every regular customer
"Our bank is the backbone of our community
It's a social hub for older members of the community and an essential and efficient support for local businesses in their short and long term banking needs
"A healthy bank such as ours reflects a prosperous community
We are the envy of larger town centres left without a bank," he said
The branch is located at 416-418 Forest Road

by establishing a temporary museum to mark the 100th anniversary of its main school building
was built to accommodate the growing number of student enrolments
which is now on the site of St Mary and St Mina's Coptic Orthodox College
opened with 103 students and two classrooms
an extension was added to the building to accommodate the 310 students in attendance
This was followed by another building in 1917 on the same site
there was a total enrolment of 1340 pupils
The Parents and Citizens Association was reformed
and actively sought proper facilities for the school which only had 22 classrooms for 28 classes
land on the east side of Forest Road was resumed by the Department of Education
Plans were completed and it was intended to begin the new building at once
but there was a change in government in April 1922 and it was decided that this work would be postponed due to lack of money
The Parents and Citizens Association protested vigorously at this decision and

You have queues to thank for the existence of Self Raised Snack Shoppe in Bexley North
Co-owner Huss Rachid was compelled to open this kiosk after the lines kept growing at its sister cafe
“We’d have people waiting outside before we’d open the doors,” he says. And when people did enter for four-cheese toasties
halal-friendly hoagies and choc custard tarts
the queues would sometimes snake for 40 metres down the street
James BrickwoodAdvertisementSome operators might revel in the buzz generated from constant crowds
but Rachid didn’t want to keep people idling – or deter others from turning up
So this February – a year after Rachid launched Self Raised Bread Shoppe with sister Amani and business partner Sal Senan – the trio opened this spin-off venture. It’s located near My Mother’s Cousin, the New York-style pizzeria they also run (which, incidentally, is a queue magnet as well).
There’s no overcomplicated 10-part mystery as to why their eateries keep autofilling with crowds: they’re all places that brilliantly reward your appetite. And although Self Raised Snack Shoppe opened as a crowd-control measure, it’s natural that it also generates lines. After all, it specialises in sandwiches, pastries and other specials you won’t find at the other cafe, such as lemon meringue doughnuts and sweet-chilli mayo prawn rolls.
There’s also airy Roman-style pizza by the slice, shaped from local Wholegrain Milling flour: the margarita is grounded in the rich intensity of San Marzano tomatoes and topped with two kinds of creamy mozzarella from La Stella, a cheesemaker in Auburn.
Peach ice tea and Icy Milo.James BrickwoodSarah Ghantous, the head pastry chef for both venues, is responsible for the wonders on the counter. Her panna cotta sponge cake has a sunshine-bright dazzle and the raspberry and strawberry danish is a jackpot of cream and fruit.
Invented in NSW by Thomas Mayne in 1934, Milo then ricocheted worldwide. The iced Milo poured at Snack Shoppe is inspired by Milo dinosaurs that Rachid sipped in Singapore (the drink is named for its giant size). It’s been reinterpreted with enthusiasm and, like many things at Self Raised Snack Shoppe, it’s something I’d happily queue for.
Vibe: An outdoor kiosk trading in house-baked goods worth grabbing: focaccia slabs, Roman-style pizza and pretty pastries. Find favourites from its sister cafe (and exclusive menu items, too).
Average cost for two: Around $40 for two, plus drinks.

Jeff Tullock said the town centre has been building on its strength as an economical place for new businesses to 'give it a go'
there's reasonable council parking and there's high exposure to passing traffic," he said
"In the past month we have seen a gelato shop
a gift shop and a flooring shop all open in Bexley."
occupying the top floor at 446 to 450 Forest Road
The business was started in 2016 by Spiros Mihalatos and his sister Esmae Mihalatos-Koutsoukis
had a chicken shop in Kingsgrove for 40 years and we started our business nearby in Beverly Hills," Spiros said
"Because we have connections with Kingsgrove and Beverly Hills we didn't want to stray too far out of the St George area and we found this location on Forest Road
"I also know Bexley very well having attended Marist Brothers Kogarah
I remember passing it many times over the years and seeing the sign Slattery and Jurd Solicitors
I never thought I would one day be running my own business there
We want to see Bexley back to being a top class suburb
It's a very good place with great exposure and I feel it will go from strength to strength
"With a bit of investment we think it could be the best centre in St George."
Mr Tullock said that in their June 2023 Economic Snapshot
Bayside Council measured the high street occupancy rate for Bexley as 66 per cent
the lowest of all Town Centres in the Bayside LGA
"This is perhaps not surprising with the high volume of light and heavy vehicles avoiding tolls on the M5 and M8 by driving through Bexley
it is reassuring that our Town Centre properties attract quality businesses such as Mihalatos and Associates," Mr Tullock said
"Bexley continues as a viable shopping strip and is the envy of much larger town centres in still having its own community bank
"We are also well serviced by a variety of health and allied health professionals
"Our centre has a hotel, budget motel and RSL club. There is also an Olympic swimming pool and two golf courses close by. Our business chamber has a go to web site for information about Bexley which includes a full list of businesses in our Town Centre. It can be accessed at bexleychamber.com.au."

Ohio (WSYX) — Bexley police are looking for a weapon in connection to the case of an armed robbery on Sunday night

(7News) — A man is accused of killing his girlfriend Monday morning in Suitland
according to the Prince George's County Police Department
The woman killed has been identified as 36-year-old Neri Moreno Gratini
Officers went to the home located on Bexley Place around 1:55 a.m
where Gratini was found inside with several gunshot wounds
Officers were able to get a description of Gratini's boyfriend and his vehicle information
officers spotted his SUV and conducted a traffic stop
They ordered the man to get out of the SUV
Officers approached the vehicle and found the man in the driver's seat with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound
He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries
The council highlighted the peak rate charges as being ‘of particular concern’
as they only apply when travelling northbound between 6-10am and southbound between 4-7pm
This means that Bexley residents who have registered for Auto Pay — Transport for London’s (TfL) automated toll payment system— would end up paying £4 for each crossing in a day
For commuters travelling in opposite directions — southbound between 6-10am and northbound between 4-7pm — the charge is discounted as an off-peak rate of £1.50 each way
it requested a ‘thorough assessment of the economic consequences prior to any charges being finalised’
but TfL approved the charges with ‘few changes to their original proposal
and with very little benefit to Bexley’
said: ‘This is a real kick in the teeth for our residents and small businesses who are being treated unfairly
The higher charge for travelling South to North from boroughs such as Bexley to Newham needs to be urgently addressed with a more comprehensive package of concessions
‘Residents and businesses in Bexley have no choice but to use the tunnels given the lack of modern public transport links serving the borough and should not be discriminated against for doing so
'We have long been campaigning for better transport links and for a broader commitment on public transport investment but this has been ignored.’
