Four minutes earlier, Joel Cauchi, 40, who had schizophrenia, had begun a stabbing rampage inside the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping mall The inspector was the first police unit to respond to the initial radio call-out. She had been driving her police car from Bondi beach Insp Amy Scott after receiving the commissioners valour award in 2024. Photograph: Mick Tsikas/AAP“I remember the radio operator said … ‘We’re getting multiple calls, multiple stabbings, multiple locations at Bondi Junction Westfield.’ I knew right then that it was very real,” Scott told the state coroner, Teresa O’Sullivan, on Tuesday. When she arrived at the Westfield, her initial plan was to execute a “dynamic entry”, with other officers entering the centre at multiple points. But running from the shopping centre were people screaming: “He’s killing people, he’s hurting people.” Read moreShe told Lidcombe coroners court she then knew she was dealing with an active armed offender officers were told they had a 60% to 70% chance of non-survival “and that is if you are partnered up and vested up as makeshift backup she had Silas Despreaux and Damien Guerot – two French nationals who had become friends since moving to Australia Guerot arrived in Australia to learn English about 10 years ago and is now a carpenter Despreaux told Guerot: “Let’s go catch him.” 2:20Footage shows Australian police arriving on scene after Bondi Junction attack – videoThey tried to stop Cauchi using heavy bollards from a clothing store throwing them down an escalator as he moved up it towards them Scott told the court that the men told her which way to go she unclipped her gun and one of the Frenchmen told her: “You’re on your own [without other police] You have to have your gun ready because this guy is dangerous.” A short distance from the top of the escalator and with the men behind her “I’ve got eyes on him … and I’m in foot pursuit,” she radioed When he stopped about 20 metres ahead of her She silently signalled to a mother with a pram then called out “mate” to get Cauchi’s attention He turned towards her and started sprinting she told the court that she thought “that he was going to kill me” Less than six minutes after his rampage began Cauchi lay motionless outside an art and craft shop Two of the bullets had hit him; one missed and struck a pot plant Read moreThat morning, after sleeping rough near Maroubra beach, he picked up his backpack and knife from his rented storage locker, searched Reddit for accounts of the Columbine school shooting, then made his way to Bondi Junction. There, while standing in a queue at a cafe in the sprawling Westfield shopping centre, he took his knife from his bag and, just before 3.33pm, fatally stabbed Dawn Singleton. The 25-year-old bride had been shopping for wedding makeup. Five seconds later, he stabbed Jade Young, 47, an architect, once, as she stood beside her daughter. She died within minutes. He next fatally stabbed an economics student, Yixuan Cheng, 27, then new mother Ashlee Good, 38, a security guard, Faraz Tahir, 30, and Pikria Darchia, 55. After being stabbed while protecting her baby, Good was able to contact her mother-in-law who was also in Westfield. She “made her way to assist … and was there to comfort her and her granddaughter in the midst of that fear”, the senior counsel assisting, Dr Peggy Dwyer SC, said. Young’s daughter used her dying mother’s phone to call her father, who was also at Westfield. On his way to them, he encountered the attacker and “warned others that Mr Cauchi had a knife before running to find his wife”, the court heard. Sign up to Afternoon Update: Election 2025 Free daily newsletterOur Australian afternoon update breaks down the key election campaign stories of the day, telling you what’s happening and why it matters An early assumption was that Cauchi targeted women: of his 16 victims, just three were men. But that theory was debunked by Det Chief Insp Andrew Marks, the police officer in charge of the investigation. “From the start of his attack, he moved very quickly and he appeared to attack people that were not ready, [who] didn’t know what was happening,” Marks said in court. “I just believe that whoever was in his way … is who he attacked.” It was clear that the death toll might have been far higher. In 2021, Cauchi had sought and been given initial psychiatric approval for a gun licence – something he did not follow through on, which the court heard was “very, very fortunate”. The court watched CCTV footage that showed Cauchi, seconds before he was shot, hesitating in front of a man, who appeared to have no idea of the danger he was in. Read more“I don’t even know to this day if they realised,” Scott said from the stand the bravery of the young officers who had also run towards danger that day – some of whom have not been able to return to work since The level of preparedness for an active armed offender from security alarms to interagency communication and command is central to the inquest for which the brief of evidence contains some 50 volumes and on which at least 18 barristers are working Australia is a country in which mass casualty attacks are rare – the Bondi Junction attack was Sydney’s worst mass murder in more than a decade – and the triage response was perhaps a function of that fact communications issues also hampered responders’ efforts Multiple victims spread over three floors of the massive mall, combined with the sheer number of people there on that ordinary Saturday – not to mention its infamously maze-like layout – would have added to the fear and chaos that quickly descended. Dwyer’s opening address led what has become a theme of the inquest: every witness, and many of the barristers, have begun their words with condolences to those affected. Injuries have been acknowledged as being both physical and psychological. “The grief of the families who are impacted is raw and deep … and the extent of their loss is truly unfathomable for the rest of us. The inquest is a huge strain on their emotional reserves,” Dwyer said. As well as many witnesses, the state coroner, too, was affected. On Tuesday, O’Sullivan stopped proceedings after Whalley was overcome with emotion when recalling how, late in the evening of 13 April, a team of young police officers had not wanted to leave the side of a deceased victim. “I’m grateful for the break too,” O’Sullivan told him after a five-minute pause, “because I found what you said very moving.” Share via...Gift this articleSubscribe to gift this article Gift 5 articles to anyone you choose each month when you subscribe While legal-eagle-slash-real-estate-mogul Bruce McWilliam is usually associated with grand Point Piper waterfronts his latest purchase in Bondi Beach falls into the category of a renovator’s delight – and that’s being generous The famed corporate lawyer who has worked with the likes of Malcolm Turnbull Kerry Packer and Rupert Murdoch has just purchased what is arguably the worst house in one of Sydney’s most iconic suburbs spending $4.43 million on a hoarder’s home SaveLog in or Subscribe to save articleShareCopy link Gift 5 articles to anyone you choose each month when you subscribe. his government had increased its majority by not modeling itself on U.S President Donald Trump’s administration “Australians have chosen to face global challenges the Australian way looking after each Penny Sharpe says ‘mystery’ debris sent for testing and beaches not closed as there were so few balls More ball-shaped debris has washed ashore at Sydney’s Bondi, Coogee, Maroubra and Cronulla beaches, the New South Wales government has confirmed. The office of the acting premier, Penny Sharpe, told Guardian Australia on Wednesday that “small numbers of balls” – some only pea-sized – had washed up on the four beaches in the past few days. These balls had been cleaned up and sent for testing and, as there were so few pieces, none of the beaches had been closed, Sharpe’s office said. beaches in the area on Monday morning found only a small number of balls at South Coogee,” they said “Council staff found none of the material on Randwick City beaches during morning inspections on Tuesday or Wednesday and all beaches in the area remain open.” They said council staff were inspecting the beaches daily The Sutherland and Waverley councils were contacted for comment Dee Why and months but the Environment Protection Authority (EPA), Sydney Water and the government maintain they cannot work out where they are coming from Addressing the media on Wednesday afternoon Sharpe feet of the EPA here,” she said “This is an odd situation that remains a mystery that we’re getting to the bottom of.” Thousands of pieces of spherical debris washed up on many eastern suburbs beaches Those balls were initially widely reported to be “tar balls” comprising crude oil until testing coordinated with the EPA revealed they were consistent with human-generated waste – or “likely lumps of fatberg” More ball-shaped debris washed up in Kiama in November, before green, grey and black balls washed up on Silver beach at Kurnell The EPA said on Tuesday the balls that washed up on Sydney’s eastern suburbs beaches in October were found to consist mostly of fatty acids and petroleum hydrocarbons But the regulator said testing could not “pinpoint a source” or identify what caused them to form because “there was no source sample available for comparison” The EPA said analysis of the balls that washed up in Kiama found they had a similar composition to those that washed up on the eastern beaches and it was “still awaiting” the final results of the Kurnell debris An artist’s impression of a penthouse at Avra A new Bondi Beach apartment development has achieved an astonishing $89m in off-the-plan sales after just eight days on the market The boutique 18-unit block Avra in Curlewis St is named after the Greek goddess of breeze with its design insired by the sculptural forms of waves It’s won over buyers from Dover Heights to Tamarama but also Manly on the northern beaches who’ve paid between $9m up to $15m for three-bedroom apartments this is a hugely successful launch,” says sales agent Ben Stewart ‘Breastmaster’s’ $11m bid after $36m payout and the northerly aspect helped win over buyers Avra is developed by Clutch and designed by PBD Architects and Woods Bagot “Buyers are of the understanding that the market is stablising and an interest rate drop is on the horizon “They are acting on the basis they can act now and lock in todays prices as the market improves thoughout the construction phase of the development.” Stewart said the buyers loved that the apartments are all north-facing their size (180sqm-211sqm) and the retail below including a French restaurant and high-end providores “The site is large and is set to redefine Curlewis St with a luxury building anchored by a brand new precinct underneath,” Stewart said developed by Clutch and designed by PBD Architects and Woods Bagot and located just a block from the beach All of the apartments have premium finishes offer spacious living areas leading to expansive private balconies The kitchens are designed with curved Champagne quartzite countertops and state-of-the-art appliances from Gaggenau The development is set to completely change Curlewis St Every home opens to a private atrium filled with natural light and lush landscaping by renowned designer Miles Baldwin “Avra’s design is inspired by the sculptural forms of waves capturing the sense of movement through its soft curves and flowing shapes,” said Paul Buljevic of PBD Architects Tracey Wiles from Woods Bagot added that the vision was to create a property that lives up to the iconic status of Bondi Beach while simultaneously exuding the luxury of a Mediterranean villa “These residences have such grandeur and scale that they feel like true private homes we’ve considered every aspect,” Wiles said In a major step towards restoring the vibrant energy and culture that made Bondi Beach so famous and beloved to locals and visitors alike a motion for a Bondi Beach New Year’s Eve event The motion was put forth by Bondi Ward Councillor Michelle Stephenson and Waverly Council Mayor Will Nemesh at last month’s council meeting The council will undergo an Expression of Interest (EOI) process to find a partner to run the event Council is also eager to secure the support of the State Government and Destination NSW visitors and community,” said Mayor Nemesh “We want to see greater activation of our public spaces and a New Year’s Eve event is the perfect activity for welcoming in the new year more events and more options to have fun,” he continued “Last night was a real win for music lovers across the city’s east and around the world,” Stephenson told Rolling Stone AU/NZ “Not only are we bringing back live entertainment to our much-loved iconic beach but we are also helping boost our local economy Our city has long needed a nighttime refresh and this New Year’s Eve event will do just that.” Shore Thing was originally terminated after complaints from residents that it drove families away and brought antisocial behaviour the festival brought in big names such as Snoop Dogg After the success of the Mardi Gras Bondi Beach Dance Party in the past the Council is confident that they will be able to collaborate with industry to minimise the negative impact on residents that caused the festival to be done away with in the past Some of these proposed measures include curfews waste disposal and effective transport management “As a Bondi Ward Councillor one thing I consistently hear is how the community has lost its vibe,” Stephenson said “Many locals are crying out for ways to reconnect and what better way than through music “Local businesses including bars and restaurants are also looking for ways to increase visitors in a tough economic climate Top tier talent performing on an iconic beach I honestly can’t think of a better way to bring in the New Year.” A famous beachside suburb has been left divided over plans to install a mermaid themed public artwork after complaints about the 'representation of women's bodies' Waverley Council revealed plans in 2023 to pay homage to two well-known mermaid sculptures and erect an artwork at Bondi's South Park, in Sydney's eastern suburbs The fibreglass mermaid sculptures once stood on the rocks on the northern end of the beach after they were installed without permission in the 1960s The pair were modelled on local women Jan Carmody who was crowned Miss Australia Surf in 1959 One statue lasted 14 years before it was stolen replaced and then washed away with council refusing to replace it for a second time The other statue lasted 16 years until bits and pieces were stolen and council eventually decided to remove what was left of it Waverley Council had planned to honour the history with studio Pink Cactus' design re-imagining the statues in a single 2.5m tall stainless steel and Corten steel piece A report written for Waverley Council suggested it risked 'reputational harm' if it green-lit the initiative following community backlash The mermaid's torso was to be constructed by layered steel segments which could be 'seen through' from certain angles labelled 'not actually good enough' and the 'least bad' option in community consultation 'Community consultation feedback clearly demonstrates that no artwork design is supported by the public,' the report read 'Commentary regarding the waste of public funds is already a feature of the public consultation and is likely to become an ongoing message should an artwork continue 'Continuing to spend funds on this project would create a risk of reputational harm.' The internal council committee report also made a vague mention of feedback relating to the sculpture's 'representation of the female form' funding would be reallocated to other public art initiatives including a memorial artwork to recognise the stabbing tragedy at Westfield Bondi Junction 'If Council chooses to progress this artwork in the absence of community consensus for it to proceed it would risk over-extending Council’s allocated spending on public art projects and would jeopardise the delivery of more recent public art projects prioritised by Council including the Campbell Parade mosaic restoration works the Westfield tragedy memorial artwork and joint Waverley-Woollahra artwork,' the report read Culture and Creativity Advisory Committee convened in response to the report last month before unanimously recommending against awarding the commission to any of the previously exhibited concepts A community meeting this week will decide whether the project will be formally scrapped Waverley councillor Michelle Stephenson said she could understand residents' frustration 'The concept designs weren't great and they weren't representative of the original mermaids,' she told the Daily Telegraph.  'They also weren't in the original location so I don't think people really saw the link.'  Former mayor Paula Masselos said the artwork should be a re-imagination of the suburb's history for future generations.  She later admitted subsequent feedback on the sculptures had been almost universally opposed to the project.  She said the council had an obligation to listen to the public.  Major terror attack 'was just HOURS away' before it was foiled by the special forces and police:... The history of Bondi Beach is rich and fascinating Originally, the area was inhabited by the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation. The name "Bondi" is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning "water breaking over rocks," a fitting tribute to the area's natural features while the 1950s and 60s saw a significant boom of both commercial and residential development It wasn't until a major redevelopment of one of Bondi's landmark buildings in 2013 that the whole face of the suburb changed Allen Linz's Rebel Property and Eduard Litver's Capitel Group kicked off a wave of new development just over a decade ago, a wave that has completely transformed the apartment market in Bondi Beach Their redevelopment of the existing Swiss Grand Hotel on the dress circle Campbell Parade sent national records tumbling. Fund manager Will Vicars bought two adjoining "Lighthouse" penthouses in the new development, now named Pacific Bondi Beach for an off the plan apartment record $21.9 million Designed by PTW, Pacific Bondi Beach incorporated the Art Deco character of the street with Bondi architecture through the use of curvilinear elements and roof lines found in 1930s architecture The Pacific Bondi comprises 110 luxury apartments, a 69-room QT Bondi Hotel 5,500 sqm of retail including Speedo Fitness Club and pool Woolworths Metro and BWS store and a mix of high-quality food and beverage operations and assorted fashion boutiques where they've recently secured another record It's the price per square metre record for the whole country. The five-bedroom penthouse was recently bought for $23 million The soon-to-be completed development comprises just seven new apartments set behind the historic Bates Milk Bar façade The Bondi Beach new and off-the-plan apartment market has been running hot in 2024. Data from MatterFact, the data product of Urban.com.au, shows it has been among one of the most enquired on areas in the Eastern Suburbs, alongside its neighbouring Bondi Junction There’s only been one apartment launch so far in 2024. That was Mayfair, a luxury apartment development by Fenbury, also on Campbell Parade Mayfair comprises just seven north-facing three-bedroom apartments designed by MHN Design Union with interiors by Ennen & Co In a departure from neighbouring buildings Mayfair is exclusively designed and dedicated solely to residential use The last development launch before Mayfair was Eurangi by Princeton back in the third quarter of 2022, an absolute beachfront address at 134 Campbell Parade There are eight apartments in Eurangi, two of which are whole floor penthouses that offer some of the best views in Bondi Beach Eurangi, Bondi Beach Another notable property is the AYA Penthouse, the largest-ever single-floor penthouse in Bondi Beach Ray White Projects have been asking $26.4 million for the sprawling AYA Penthouse atop the Aqualine Bondi Beach project on Hall Street Designed by world-renowned architect Koichi Takada the expansive 443 sqm penthouse comprises four bedrooms and multiple living and entertaining areas There are several new apartment developments that will be revealed later this year The first will be Avra by Clutch, just 18 luxury apartments at 141-155 Curlewis Street, about 150 metres from Campbell Parade Each of the apartments, designed by PBD and with interiors by Woods Bagot except the sprawling four-bedroom penthouses The apartments will sit above three new retail tenancies There is also expected to be further details revealed about Central Elements' Bondi Beach development. Urban revealed the plans for seven luxury residences back in March Central Element paid around $50 million for the amalgamated 2,050 sqm site fronting Sandridge and Wilga streets where they're planning two duplex homes and five apartments There's been no word on the Campbell Parade development submitted by F45 co-founder Rob Deutsche in 2023. An investment vehicle of his filed plans for four luxury apartments above retail at 56 Campbell Parade Then there are two other Hall Street developments also planned Over two years ago Blank filed $9.4 million plans to transform the old Westpac building into a mixed-use precinct He's been approved to create a new shop-top housing building with retail premises on the ground floor of 26-32 Hall Street BANG Architecture handled the design of the building just a stone's throw from the famous sand BANG noted in the design statement submitted to Waverley Council that Bondi Beach has seen some impressive developments come to fruition in the past decade. He's certainly not wrong, but the opportunity to develop near the beach is shrinking as Sydney's top developers hone in.
