Energy Minister Chris Bowen has rejected the claim that Australia faces similar risks of mass blackouts to those observed in Spain and Portugal
despite experts warning against over-relying on renewable energy.
Energy Minister Chris Bowen has vehemently rejected the claim Australia faces mass power outages similar to those recently seen in Europe
despite the fact authorities are yet to determine a definitive cause for the unprecedented event
Spain and Portugal were hit by a complete power outage
causing chaos in major cities along the Iberian Peninsula
A state of emergency was declared following the nationwide blackout
which Spanish grid operator REE said was caused when a sudden
large drop in power supply caused the grid interconnection between Spain and France to trip
The catastrophic failure has raised serious questions about the resilience of grid infrastructure across Europe as governments race to roll out renewable energy systems and reduce carbon emissions
When asked if the mass blackouts in Spain and Portugal proved the risk of over-relying on renewable energy sources
before conceding that energy transitions come with challenges
“I’m sure the Spanish and Portuguese authorities will provide a full update on what’s gone wrong there
obviously every system that’s undergoing change has to very carefully calibrate its changes [and] that’s what we’re doing in Australia” he told Sky News on Friday
Mr Bowen also took aim at Treasurer Angus Taylor
slamming his track record as Energy Minister
“There hasn’t been a blackout in Australia caused by lack of energy in our time in office certainly
and the last blackouts were when Angus Taylor was the minister”
The historic blackouts referenced by Mr Bowen were sparked by extreme weather events as opposed to mass disturbances throughout the grid
In November 2019 a windstorm ripped through Sydney leaving thousands without power and in May 2020 thousands in Queensland lost power after a turbine fire erupted in a power station.
When questioned further Mr Bowen admitted that inertia may have played a role in triggering the blackouts across south-west Europe
“Let’s see what the Spanish and Portuguese update their peoples with and the rest of the world with as to what’s gone wrong here
early reports says it’s a problem of inertia
we have plans to deal with that in Australia but let’s wait for the full report”
Inertia in the context of energy systems refers to the difficulties countries face in maintaining grid stability during energy transitions
as renewable sources that lack big turbines like wind and solar replace the kinetic energy provided by traditional generators
the frequency on Spain’s electricity grid dropped from the 50 hertz level at which the grid’s operator tries to maintain
with a move bigger than 0.1 hertz forcing many power stations to automatically switch off for safety reasons
What caused the frequency to fall is not yet clear
director of operational services at Spain’s grid operator Red Electrica
blamed an unexpected loss of generation in south-west Spain
home to a significant number of solar plants
One problem on Monday was that there was not enough backstop stable power
to handle the sudden fall of power generation
"The problem wasn't so much the massive entry of renewables
rather the lack of synchronous generation," the source said
solar energy accounted for 53 per cent of electricity production
wind for almost 11 per cent and nuclear and gas for 15 per cent in Spain
Investigators from Spain's cybersecurity agency and the CNI intelligence service will seek information from the country's grid operator
and private energy companies as part of a probe into the causes of massive blackouts across Spain and Portugal
Bowen was also pressed about an open letter penned to the government by over 50 industry magnates
that stressed against an overreliance on renewables following the Spanish blackouts
Mr Bowen rejected the letter's significance
there isn’t an expert who thinks the Coalition's plan is vaguely sensible or practical”
“[Those critics] are people who have been long term advocates of nuclear power
but the experts at the Australian Energy Market Operator commission have all said we need to keep going with the path outlined in the ISP,” he said
Without Jarrod Bowen’s goals and assists it is highly likely West Ham would have been in real danger of being relegated this season
Bowen got another to salvage an underwhelming 1-1 draw with a Tottenham reserve team who look more concerned with not getting injured than winning a derby
Max Kilman gifted Spurs the lead but Bowen’s clever run and finish levelled things up and that’s how it remained as Graham Potter’s awful record stretched to three wins in 16 games
The Hammers were booed off yet again as fans made their feelings clear
It’s also now just 13 wins in West Ham’s last 54 Premier League games going back to January 2024
So when Niclas Fullkrug broke ranks to slam West Ham’s poor standards and weak mentality
he was hailed a hero by fans for giving them a voice
Many Hammers fans called for Fullkrug to be made captain after his angry ourburst
There was a feeling among many that he was doing what Bowen should have done long ago
Some eyebrows were raised when Bowen was made captain by Julen Lopetegui
Unquestionably West Ham’s best and most consistent player
it made sense in terms of choosing someone to lead by example
And that works when you have a functioning team where everyone is pulling in the same direction
The problem is Bowen is a quiet and shy character and fans have always had doubts whether he could be the type to really rally a dressing room or get teammates by the scruff of the neck if required
Sadly this season proves those concerns were probably valid
West Ham sit 17th and look likely to finish there after as their winless run stretches to eight games
Bowen finally showed some leadership skills – externally at least – when he warned his Hammers teammates ahead of the clash with Tottenham
While there was no lack of effort from West Ham’s players in the game
it was a boring performance and disappointing result given Spurs rested nearly their entire team
Now an angry Bowen has hit back at West Ham fans he has heard criticising him
A visibly agitated Bowen says he has seen and heard the criticism of his captaincy from supporters
Bowen says they don’t see what really goes on but admits his leadership probably hasn’t been good enough given where West Ham are in the table
But he says West Ham fans can’t criticise the way he leads by example
“Listen when you’re captain all eyes and all questions are on you,” Bowen told Sky Sports in the interview you can see below
“It’s not been the season we’ve wanted and there have been fingers pointed at me and I’m big enough to accept that
“I’ve been here long enough and my ego is not going to be touched when people are asking questions
We haven’t been performing this season and I’m captain of this group
of course there’s going to be questions asked
every single day in training and get around the players as well as I know that I can
“People don’t see me every single day working
it’s just people’s opinions and you know football is a game of opinions
Jarrod Bowen speaks after his goal earned West Ham a point against Tottenham Hotspur ⚒️ pic.twitter.com/HN13Ui7yTW
“All I do is turn up every single day in training
be the best captain I can be in training and when it comes to the weekend consistently turn up and show what it means to play for this club
“I think when you’re captain and when questions come to you
that’s all you can do and that’s all that I’ve tried to do this season
maybe I’ve not done enough because of the position that we’re in
I’ll always face the critics that come with it but I’m trying.”
West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur played out a 1-1 draw at London Stadium
Spurs went a goal up early on as Max Kilman misjudged the flight of the ball which resulted in Wilson Odobert putting the away side in front with a calm finish
West Ham hit back and found an equaliser through Jarrod Bowen as he poked an effort home from close range
There were few chances in the match following both goals
with both teams struggling to carve out openings in the final third
with West Ham a point and one place further down in 17th position
Spurs took the lead in the 15th minute with their first foray into the Hammers box as Kilman failed to deal with a ball forward which allowed Mathys Tel to set up Odobert who finished
West Ham had been the superior of the two sides early on and deservedly got back level on 28 minutes, as Aaron Wan-Bissaka carefully threaded a pass forward for Bowen who netted from a tight angle
Spurs could have retaken the lead as a fabulous pass from Tel found Richarlison in the area
but he flashed an effort across the face of goal with no Spurs player able to finish off
Tel remained a threat in the second half and went close as he burst inside the box, but his low effort was saved by Alphonse Areola
The hosts nearly found a breakthrough late on, but Guglielmo Vicario made a superb one-handed stop to deny Bowen after he glanced a header on from James Ward-Prowse’s free-kick
Graham Potter was visibly frustrated with West Ham failing to hold onto their lead last week against Brighton & Hove Albion as they fell to a 3-2 defeat
with the beginning of his tenure at London Stadium going from bad to worse
Potter wanted a response from his players in this London derby
as a key error from Kilman gifted Spurs a goal despite the visitors barely threatening in the opening minutes
The home side hit back well despite going behind and got their reward as arguably two of their best players in a difficult campaign
Bowen was their most dangerous player going forward and went close on two occasions after scoring
as he saw a header saved from close range and flashed a dipping volley wide of the far post
There was promise in terms of build-up throughout but
as has been the case for many of West Ham’s performances this season
the final ball was lacking at the vital moment
West Ham now prepare for a trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United next weekend
which included three straight Premier League losses
were put on hold in midweek as they took a crucial 3-1 first-leg lead against Bodo/Glimt in the semi-final of the UEFA Europa League
That competition is Spurs’ main focus and that was highlighted in Ange Postecoglou’s team selection as he made eight changes for this London derby
They had barely got going and yet went in front as they capitalised on West Ham’s defensive lapses in the best possible way through Odobert
Postecoglou’s men were never really in control of the match
One positive to take from the match was Tel’s performance
staking a claim to start against Bodo/Glimt with a fine display
The Frenchman was at the centre of Spurs’ most promising attacks and intelligently picked out Odobert for the goal
Spurs’ season now rests on the Europa League second leg in Norway which takes place on Thursday evening
West Ham report | Spurs report
West Ham have now failed to win any of their last eight Premier League matches (D4 L4), their longest run without a victory in the competition since a run of eight between October and December 2017 under Slaven Bilic (four matches) and then David Moyes (four matches).
Bowen's goal was his 54th goal involvement at home for West Ham (37 goals, 17 assists), equalling Michail Antonio as the Hammers player with the most goal involvements at home for the club in the competition.
Spurs have won just 11 of their 35 Premier League matches this season (D5 L19), only winning fewer at this stage of a Premier League campaign in three previous campaigns (9 in 1993/94, 9 in 1997/98 and 10 in 2007/08).
Wilson Odobert (20y 157d) is the youngest player to score in a Premier League London derby for Spurs since Dele Alli against Crystal Palace in January 2016 (19y 287d).
Enjoy some incredible crosses and passes by the Liverpool full-back as he announces his departure this summer

Jarrod Bowen now has three goals in his past five Premier League appearances
West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen scored his 10th Premier League goal of the season as they shared the points with Tottenham in a meeting between two massively underperforming sides
Both had very little riding on this fixture and it showed as the 17th-placed Hammers could not overtake their London rivals in the table after a tame derby
Ange Postecoglou made eight changes to the Tottenham side that defeated Bodo/Glimt 3-1 in Thursday's Europa League semi-final first leg
the Australian's focus was firmly on ending a dismal season on a high by winning that competition and reaching the Champions League next season
Spurs had Max Kilman to thank for gifting them the 15th-minute opener as Mathys Tel nicked the ball from the Hammers defender and squared for the unmarked Wilson Odobert to pick his spot and claim his first league goal for Spurs
But Bowen levelled 13 minutes later when he ran on to a through-ball from Aaron Wan-Bissaka and smartly finished through the legs of Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario to restore parity
It was the West Ham captain's third goal in five games in an impressive scoring run
Richarlison then found himself in a promising position at the other end
but decided to go for a pass across the goal when the chance of a shot was on
Chances were few and far between in the second half
but the hosts could have claimed all three points at London Stadium in the closing stages
rescued Tottenham by producing a stunning save to keep out Bowen's glancing header from a James Ward-Prowse free-kick with eight minutes remaining
The boys put in a good shift - Postecoglou
This game was always going to be a mere footnote for Tottenham in their current circumstances as the season draws to a close
They are two games away from winning their first silverware since 2008 in the Europa League
despite their worst season domestically since 1976-77
They had almost put on a perfect performance against Bodo/Glimt in midweek
but a late goal from the visitors kept the last-four tie alive
And with a difficult outing on the artificial pitch in Norway to follow on Thursday
it was not surprising Postecoglou rang the changes with his team selection and Spurs failed to click
Yves Bissouma and Richarlison kept their spots in the starting line-up as Dominic Solanke and James Maddison
Postecoglou will be relieved his side negotiated a late West Ham rally and avoided a record 20th Premier League defeat of the season after only having two of their seven shots on target and generating an expected goals of just 0.48
Aston Villa and Brighton to play in the league but
Postecoglou will hope he also has a Europa League title showdown with either Manchester United or Athletic Club to come on 21 May
Decent performance but West Ham couldn't sustain it - Potter
West Ham manager Graham Potter was desperately looking for a first win in eight games here - and almost got it
The home side were on top after the interval with Bowen going close with a volley early while Niclas Fullkrug, back in the starting line-up after his scathing remarks on his team-mates following a disappointing draw with Southampton two weeks ago
failed to keep his header down with less than 20 minutes to go
Bowen was again their standout player and their best chance unsurprisingly fell to their skipper who had his header kept out by Vicario
before Ward-Prowse failed to get his free-kick on target in second-half stoppage time
Potter will still need to make improvements to keep the Hammers faithful by his side for the next season
After replacing Julen Lopetegui in January
the former Brighton and Chelsea boss has only collected 14 points in 15 matches and they are fourth bottom
three places below where his predecessor left the club
They will hope to climb up the table with meetings against Manchester United
West Ham and Ipswich Town completing a below-par season

Energy Minister Chris Bowen has been caught in a heated confrontation with Sky News political contributor Chris Uhlmann after the veteran journalist outlined Labor's failure to address soaring electricity prices at the Energy Ministers' Debate
Energy Minister Chris Bowen has failed to directly answer questions about rising electricity prices during a heated exchange with Sky News political contributor Chris Uhlmann
In a tense back-and-forth at the National Press Club energy debate
Mr Uhlmann challenged the minister over the government’s failed promises to reduce household power bills by $275
Labor’s modelling predicted a $275 annual cut to household electricity bills by 2025 under its climate and energy policy
Mr Bowen was unable to respond to the simple question about whether power prices have gone up or down

in December 2021 you commissioned modelling which showed – and you pledged – that you would drop power prices by $275 for residential homes,” Mr Uhlmann said
“You committed to it again in April 2022 when you were told that modelling was flawed
you continued to commit to it in 2023 and 2024 even though electricity prices were rising
“You’re now claiming that electricity price falls due to subsidies are a fall in an electricity bill
And if you can't admit that simple fact here today why should anyone believe anything you say?"
who had opened his remarks by defending the government’s investment in renewables
After Mr Bowen responded that he wasn’t “exactly sure” what the question was
“Are electricity prices going up or down?”
Mr Bowen pushed back at what he described as “disingenuous” commentary on Sky News
it's disingenuous and dishonest of you to blame all this (on) renewable energy as you do on Sky in the evenings
Mr Uhlmann pressed the Energy Minister again
very simple question — have electricity prices risen on your watch
The exact opposite of what you pledged?” he asked
“We have never denied that energy prices are higher than we would like,” Mr Bowen said
again avoiding a direct “yes” or “no” answer
“That’s why we’ve delivered three rounds of energy bill relief.”
The government recently renewed its energy bill rebates
spending $1.8 billion to tackle high power prices
Mr Uhlmann pointed out that the Energy Minister had claimed electricity prices had fallen in despite the government rebates
Australia’s had the lowest energy inflation in the world,” Mr Bowen said
Mr Bowen repeatedly attempted to redirect the discussion away from the real cost of power bills
“I think that renewable energy is the cheapest form of energy
You disagree with the CSIRO,” he said
energy prices will fall by 13 per cent over the next 10 years.”
He did not commit to any price reductions in the short term
“Anybody who predicts energy prices in this very complicated geopolitical environment
So I’m not going to do that,” he said during the debate
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese promised about 100 times at the last election he could bring power prices down by about $275
“We have a very carefully balanced plan
which is the lowest cost pathway,” Mr Bowen said
The $275 reduction in electricity bills remains a lingering political headache for Labor

Energy Minister Chris Bowen has come under fire from his independent political rival
for refusing to admit Labor’s renewable push has exacerbated the cost of living crisis in Australia
Mr Bowen and shadow energy minister Ted O’Brien clashed in a fiery National Press Club debate this week about the future of Australia’s energy policy
Labor repeatedly spruiked modelling predicting a $275 annual cut to household electricity bills by 2025 under its climate and energy policy
power prices instead rose dramatically leaving Mr Bowen unable to respond to the simple question about whether costs have gone up or down and instead saying it was ‘disingenuous’ to “blame all this” on renewable energy
who is challenging for Mr Bowen’s set of McMahon
said the Energy Minister “must think people are ridiculously stupid” to not notice the staggering hike in power bills
Bowen must think people are ridiculously stupid
at the end of the day we can all see our power bills are going up and up and up and up,” he said on The World According to Rowan Dean
“The more he is doing what he says he is going to do
“There doesn’t seem to be any light at the end of the tunnel except that of an oncoming train.”
Recent Compass polling indicates Mr Camenzuli is leading in McMahon
significantly trailing Mr Camenzuli - who garnered 41 percent support
“I’m here to bring back a good dose of common sense to the Australian political system,” Mr Camenzuli said
adding the Energy Minister was not meant to “sell us products we don’t want or need”
referring to a campaign move Mr Bowen made this month promoting Surfboards made out of recycled wind blades from Victoria
“We need meaningful work and we need a return to common sense," the independent candidate said
“Chris is busy telling us that he is going to turn Coke into Pepsi.”
haul you from your seat by the belt buckles and leave you drained and hoarse from the sheer passion of it all
At least Tottenham Hotspur had an excuse. Their minds are, understandably, already in the Arctic Circle and their crunch Europa League semi-final second leg against Bodo/Glimt with hopes of a first European final in six years
Ange Postecoglou, who changed eight of his starting XI from the first leg, will now be more concerned about the prospect of being without James Maddison for the trip to Norway, who underwent scans on his knee after limping out of the opening game.
‘It doesn't look great, but we're just waiting for further information,’ said Postecoglou afterwards. ‘It's fair to say it doesn't look promising.’
Dominic Solanke, he said, looked more positive after also coming off against Bodo/Glimt and could feature while Heung-min Son has a chance of being fit.
West Ham had no such distraction and still couldn’t beat Tottenham’s reserves. This is supposed to be the club’s fiercest rival but Graham Potter’s side produced yet another tepid display on home soil, bar the odd bright light from Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Bowen, who are now eight games without a win, their longest run since 2017.
The situation proved too much, too, for Lucas Paqueta who burst into tears after being booked in the 73rd minute for a cynical trip on Mikey Moore. Having just shown him a yellow card, referee Michael Oliver went over to check on him while Bowen also consoled his team-mate before Paqueta was substituted seven minutes later.
‘I think he's just a player that's trying his absolute best and wants the situation to be better and probably got a bit frustrated with the action,’ said West Ham boss Potter. ‘Then you see a human being, not perfect, but I love Lucas, he's given everything and in difficult circumstances he's in as well. He's given everything and he's absolutely fine now.’
It’s nearly a year since Paqueta was charged by the FA for alleged spot-fixing over four previous bookings and the Brazilian must now wait until the summer for a resolution that could see him banned for life. Paqueta strongly denies any wrongdoing.
‘We've been living this nightmare for two years and my husband is always strong,’ Paqueta’s wife Duda Fournier posted on Instagram on Sunday night. ‘I just wish people would respect him. People are mean and unfair, without knowing anything!'
West Ham’s supporters had earlier tried to drum up some hunger for the fight as they rose in unison to cries of ‘stand up if you hate Tottenham’. It made little difference.
If the mood wasn’t already bad enough around the London Stadium at West Ham’s struggles under Potter – only the relegated sides have won fewer points since his first league game in charge – it soon worsened when Spurs took the lead from nowhere.
A hopeful long ball forward into the channel looked routine for Max Kilman to sweep up but the £40million summer signing made a hash of clearing his lines and booted the ball twice against Mathys Tel.
Tel squared the ball to an unmarked Odobert, who had time to take a touch, pick his spot and finish past Alphonse Areola to score his first Premier League goal for the club.
Of all Postecoglou’s shuffled pack, it was Tel who most staked a claim for a start on Thursday night. The French forward, on loan from Bayern Munich, looked sharp every time he got the ball and frequently bamboozled Jean-Clair Todibo. He split the West Ham defence with a fine pass to Richarlison after Paqueta gave the ball away but the Spurs striker had no one waiting when he pulled the ball back in front of goal.
‘He’s been important for us,’ said Postecoglou. ‘These last few weeks we've had Sonny out and we’ve needed him to fill that void and I think he's done that well.’
For Potter, it was wing-back Wan-Bissaka who continues to be one of his few bright sparks. Whenever West Ham had the ball, he was their outlet and it was his threaded pass that found Bowen to slot between Guglielmo Vicario’s legs from a narrow angle for his 10th league goal of the campaign.
Bowen has long been the man to save the day for West Ham, who will entertain no bids for their skipper this summer, and he had the chance to win it, too, but saw his header clawed away from the line by Vicario.
Ward-Prowse was inches away from changing the mood in stoppage time but, in the end, it was Spurs who left dreaming of Europe and West Ham just ticking off another day until the season ends.

THE BOWEN Pipeline Company has confirmed that it is on target to receive approval for its water project from the State Government later this year
The Bowen Pipeline Project is a 182km underground water pipeline starting 16km upstream from Home Hill (at the Burdekin River) and moving south to Bowen
The project will allow for the creation of a reliable
secure water supply to the Bowen and Gumlu area
which produces 1/5th of Australia’s vegetables and is the country’s largest winter vegetable growing area
the area grows more than 250 million kilograms of fruit and vegetables
with a gate value of more than $650 million.
“We continue to move forward with our project approvals,” Project Director Sean Brown said
“The public advertising for our Ministerial Infrastructure Designation (MID) application commenced on April 4
with Commonwealth approval shortly after that.”
The MID Application Lodgement was made with the Department on December 18
and the application was confirmed by the Department on March 14
The Minister then proceeded to undertake notification of development with relevant stakeholders and request state agency comments
The Bowen Pipeline Project has 40 grower and industry investors who have
The project has also received a Commonwealth Grant for $5 million for engineering and design
business owners and individual residents in the Bowen and Burdekin Regions
and project equity holders include the Juru People
Mr Brown said the project was on track to achieve the timeline of soil turning within 12 months
“We look forward to continuing to work with the Queensland Government and Sunwater to progress our approvals process and we hope to be able to finalise our approvals by Quarter Three 2025 and then progress to local council permitting,” Mr Brown said
“We are well positioned to achieve our timeline of soil turning within 12 months.”
Mr Brown thanked the ‘broad range’ of supporters and stakeholders for their ongoing patience and faith in the project.
our supporters want to see North Queensland develop as a commercial and industrial hub and our project will deliver significant economic benefits during construction and operation,” he said
“The project will create yearly economic gain of $300 million for North Queensland
200 jobs during construction and 1,200 when operational.”

Opposition leader promises to release secret modelling within days as former ACCC chair urges Coalition to explain how they would lower prices
The energy minister, Chris Bowen, claims Peter Dutton is “making it up as he goes” with his gas plan
as experts question how a Coalition government would force gas producers to sell to Australians at cheaper prices
In his first public comments on Dutton’s plan to bring more gas into Australia’s energy market
Bowen claimed the Coalition was simply dusting off a plan created under the former Morrison government
Dutton on Sunday committed to releasing secret modelling within days that he said showed the Coalition’s plan to bring between 50 and 100 petajoules of extra gas online would lower power prices for consumers
Sign up for Guardian Australia’s breaking news email
“He should clear it all up and announce some more details
he’s making it up as he goes,” Bowen told Guardian Australia
Bowen and Dutton unexpectedly crossed paths at an Assyrian community festival in Fairfield
Earlier in the day Dutton had been at a brick factory in Bowen’s own electorate of McMahon
where the Liberal leader said analysis from Frontier economics – the same firm which had modelled the nuclear policy – would soon be released
But Labor and Bowen pointed out that Frontier’s first set of modelling
only showed a small role for gas under the Liberals’ nuclear plan
Dutton declined to say how the Coalition would achieve lower gas prices before the modelling was released
Bowen claimed the new policy was “word for word” similar to the gas-fired recovery policy from then-energy minister Angus Taylor in 2021 and shed doubts on whether the opposition’s nuclear and gas modelling would tell the full story
and explain why this would be different from Angus Taylor’s leftover
Queensland’s gas producers would be forced to provide 50 to 100 additional petajoules to Australia’s east coast market – known as a gas reservation – in a bid to bring down the average price from $14 a gigajoule to $10 a gigajoule by the end of the year
Most of the gas produced on the east coast is exported overseas with enough given to supply gas-fired power generation and industry
commercial and residential users in Queensland
Additional gas produced forms part of the “spot market”
which can be redirected to the east coast if there’s high seasonal demand or sold overseas
The Albanese government introduced a domestic price cap of $12 a gigajoule in 2023 along with other mechanisms to push major gas producers to voluntarily offer surplus gas supplies to the domestic market before sending it overseas
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s latest gas inquiry report in March found average retail gas prices had moderated from $19.84 a gigajoule in 2023 to $14.51 in the second half of 2024
said the Coalition’s promise to further lower gas prices by reserving more Queensland gas for the east coast was a great concept but questions needed answering
“I think it would be fantastic to get lower prices for gas
“Are you going to force [gas producers] to produce more
who headed the competition watchdog for 11 years until 2022
said gas producers were happy to produce uncontracted gas to the east coast before in the face of shortages but the opposition’s proposal would take it a step further
‘we want you to oversupply the market so prices will fall’
but they’re not going to do anything to lower prices
“How do you get [producers] to do what’s not in their economic interest to do?”
said he hoped gas producers would work with a Coalition government
to offer more gas supply to east coast Australians but flagged potential penalties or fines if they did not cooperate
“If that’s what’s necessary to bring this gas into the market
The Grattan Institute’s head of climate and energy
He said the flexibility of the spot market was important to maintain, with the ACCC warning of potential gas shortages Victoria in the coming year
“When things go wrong in the electricity market
there’s not enough wind or solar or something
you can divert contracts … into the domestic market at short notice
“The idea that this gas reservation – more gas for more Australians – is politically and superficially attractive
Analysis of Dutton’s nuclear plan from the Department of Climate Change, Energy
the Environment and Water – to be detailed further on Monday – revealed bureaucrats have raised concerns that the costs of the Coalition’s plan could be far higher than their modelling suggested
refurbishment of the plants later their lives
and costs of extending Australia’s coal fleet
done at Bowen’s request and delivered to the government before the caretaker period began
also raised doubts the nuclear plants could produce as much electricity as the Coalition claims they would
and that Australia would need more power than the Coalition models for

The Energy Ministers' debate hosted by Sky News Australia Chief Election Analyst Tom Connell at the National Press Club has seen Chris Bowen and Ted O'Brien face off to outline their different visions for Australia's future
Students and staff at Moonah’s Bowen Road Primary School have moved into brand new classrooms
replacing facilities destroyed by fire more than two years ago
The $2.3 million project features two classrooms for Years 5 and 6 students
a multi-purpose space and student bathrooms
Students recently had time to explore and settle into the new building
Education Minister Jo Palmer said the school community had come together since the fire in late 2022
“The school’s students and staff have shown amazing resilience following the fire
and they deserve these fantastic new facilities,” Palmer said
“With students recently moving into the newly-completed building
they are ready to enjoy the space in term two.”
MANA Architects designed the new classrooms in collaboration with the school and project team
while Fairbrother Construction completed the building works

Energy Minister Chris Bowen has been questioned by Sky News Political Contributor Chris Uhlmann on Labor's failed pledge to deliver a $275 cut to power bills.
The energy minister and Shadow Energy Minister Ted O’Brien faced off in the National Press Club debate hosted by Sky News Australia’s Tom Connell to discuss the nation’s energy future.
The Victorian opposition says the state’s ambitious $100 billion offshore wind rollout is in disarray as the executive in charge of a project killed off by federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen slammed the decision as wasting one of the highest potential ocean sites
Bowen on Friday revealed bad news for wind projects in both Victoria and NSW
He confirmed the US-owned renewables operator BlueFloat Energy had asked the Albanese government to pause its application for its project in the Illawarra
West Ham have played leading roles in plenty of awful games down the years but surely none have been quite this pointless or downright insulting to the paying public. At least there was an excuse for Tottenham, whose season rests on them holding their nerve in the Arctic Circle this week
There is no equivalent silver lining for West Ham
They are limping towards the finish line and the only takeaway from this performance is that only a major overhaul of a stale
demotivated squad will help them avoid further turmoil next season
There has been no uplift since Graham Potter
whose side look likely to finish 17th after they missed a chance to overtake Spurs and extended their winless run to eight games
West Ham have taken 14 points from 15 games under Potter and they approached this meeting with Ange Postecoglou’s B Team with a staggering lack of enthusiasm
Jarrod Bowen and Aaron Wan-Bissaka were the only players to emerge with any real credit
secured when Wan-Bissaka sent Bowen through to cancel out Wilson Odobert’s early goal
was met with deserved boos at a bored London Stadium
West Ham’s visionless board should be alarmed by the apathy in the stands
Some fans were still strolling in at kick-off
plenty had stayed away and there was silence when the teams emerged
who made eight changes before they look to protect a 3-1 lead in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final against Bodø/Glimt on Thursday
could not have asked for a gentler welcome
even going out of their way to help the visitors into the lead after 15 minutes of soporific football
who has struggled since his £40m move from Wolves last summer
failing to clear his lines before Odobert made it 1-0 summed up the damage Potter has to repair during pre-season
The centre-back had time to deal with a harmless ball down the left flank but played himself into trouble by twice wafting clearances against Mathys Tel
A nothing situation became one fraught with danger
leaving Odobert to stroke home his first league goal of the season after Richarlison dummied Tel’s pass into the winger’s path
Postecoglou was pleased with his side’s effort
Avoiding a 20th defeat of a sorry league campaign was a boost
although the Spurs manager was more worried about whether James Maddison will shake off a knee injury in time for the trip to Bodø
who was more optimistic about Dominic Solanke’s chances off recovering from a thigh complaint
Postecoglou acknowledged that his changes disrupted their rhythm
which allowed West Ham to feel their way back into the contest
“They scored against the run of play,” Potter said
“Because of the moment we’re having it’s tough
It is a surprise that Bowen wants to stay and fight
West Ham’s captain would not be short of suitors were he to press for a move but his motivation remains undimmed
If only others in claret and blue were as driven
The winger never stops going and West Ham were again indebted to him when he equalised in the 28th minute
The goal came from Mohammed Kudus switching play to Wan-Bissaka on the right
The wing-back had time to slide a pass down the line to Bowen
who encountered no resistance as he darted away from Ben Davies
dribbled inside and threaded a low finish through Guglielmo Vicario’s legs
Yet if that was a reminder of how easy it is to make chances against Spurs
West Ham looked determined to match them for defensive ineptitude
They could have trailed again when Lucas Paquetá lost possession in midfield; Richarlison shot wide
West Ham remained disjointed at the start of the second half
Jean-Clair Todibo sent a simple pass out for a throw
displaying all the motivation of a man who knows he will be sold this summer
gave Archie Gray an easy time at right-back
who had the gall to criticise his teammates after the draw with Southampton last month
used 80 minutes in the company of Postecoglou’s reserve centre-backs to confirm that he is unsuited to the pace of the Premier League
Spurs threatened through Tel and Pape Matar Sarr
Vicario denied Bowen and James Ward-Prowse whipped a free-kick over after coming off the bench
Paquetá appeared to be crying when he picked up a late yellow card
Sky News Political Contributor Chris Uhlmann has urged Chris Bowen to stop telling people their power prices will fall after the Energy Minister failed to directly answer questions about rising electricity prices.
At Thursday’s National Press Club energy debate
I asked Energy Minister Chris Bowen a simple question: “Have electricity prices risen on your watch?” Once again
saying only that prices were higher than the government would like
But here’s the point: In December 2021
Bowen released modelling that claimed Labor’s energy plan would reduce household electricity bills by $275 by 2025
It was a centrepiece of the last election campaign
I warned him in an interview that the modelling was flawed and would not survive contact with reality
I urged Bowen to stop telling people their power prices would fall
there’s no reason a politician should accept the advice of a journalist — but I was not alone
I understand at least one senior energy executive issued the same warning
He — and many others in Labor — repeated the pledge in 2022
He repeated it as electricity prices spiked
He repeated it as federal and state governments began spending billions in subsidies to protect consumers from massive hikes in their power bills
Bowen claimed electricity prices were falling
It’s axiomatic: if prices are falling
the government wouldn’t need to subsidise them
Then it emerged that this breathtakingly cynical claim rested entirely on the morphine of energy subsidies suppressing the real pain of actual price hikes
The Commonwealth’s share of those subsidies now stands at $6.8 billion
this line appeared in the Treasurer’s speech: “Electricity prices went down 25 per cent here last year...”
Yet the Treasurer’s own Budget papers confirm this: “Without Commonwealth and state government electricity rebates
electricity bills would have been around 45 per cent higher in the December quarter 2024.”
Using Labor’s preferred measure — citing numbers not adjusted for inflation — electricity prices on the east coast have risen by 43 per cent for residential bills and 53 per cent for businesses since Labor came to power
Consumers are now expected to be grateful for having their taxes recycled as “cost of living relief.” The arsonist demands thanks for waving a garden hose over his own inferno
On Thursday I asked Bowen to confirm one fact: “Electricity prices are rising
That’s written into every power bill
And if you can’t admit that simple fact
why should anyone believe anything you say?”
It was a question aimed at piercing a thick fog of spin — and he dodged it
Bowen’s first move was to claim he wasn’t sure what the question was
Then he accused me of editorialising — of having “strong views” and saying things on Sky News with which he disagrees
energy prices have risen — not fallen — since Labor made its promise
Bowen conceded that prices are “higher than we’d like,” before pivoting to global woes: the war in Ukraine
the things within Bowen’s control are the ones that will drive prices ever higher
They will never set the price of electricity at times of peak demand
And the explosion in transmission and distribution costs has yet to hit household bills
Bowen may learn that trust is the most important commodity in politics — and in life
I turned to the Opposition’s Ted O’Brien and pressed him on gas: how he plans to lower prices by moving excess gas in Queensland south when the pipelines are already full
His answer rested on infrastructure investment and a gas reservation policy
He admitted it won’t solve short-term supply problems
but argued that storage and prioritising domestic use could help over the next few years
Maybe — but power prices are unlikely to tumble on the basis of what we’ve seen from the Opposition so far
Neither can promise to cut electricity bills
But only one side promised a miracle — and is now pretending they delivered it
I have set up a Substack site to continue to push the case for energy realism
Vic Watson’s place as the most prolific goalscorer in the history of West Ham United looks pretty safe
To put it in perspective, the player in Graham Potter’s current roster with the most goals in Hammers colours is Michail Antonio
Upon the veteran’s eventual return from a lengthy spell on the sidelines
Antonio will hope to add to his impressive tally of 83
Jarrod Bowen
Though, in the starkest of contrasts, Vic Watson plundered a truly remarkable 326 goals in a West Ham United shirt
Nearly a century more than the second name on the list
England’s 1966 World Cup final hero Geoff Hurst
Watson also leads the way for league goals – 298 – and the for the most goals scored [50] in a single league season
A record which has stood unchallenged for nearly 100 years
Fortunately for the aforementioned Bowen – having hit the target a record 51 times on the Premier League stage – a modern-day Hammers icon has at least inscribed his name into the history books in a more modern sense
Jarrod Bowen named Paolo di Canio as his dream West Ham teammate last year
What a partnership they would be; The former having overtaken the latter as the most lethal Hammers marksman in the Premier League era
Over in Ukraine, meanwhile, former London Stadium wideman Andriy Yarmolenko has his sights firmly fixed on emulating Bowen’s East London-based goalscoring success
Because since the Ukrainian Premier League was founded back in 1992 – coincidentally
the same year in which England’s old First Division underwent a re-brand of it’s own – only three players have hit the target more regularly for Dynamo Kyiv
and he will replace Yevhen Seleznyov on the podium
Yarmolenko is ten behind Serhiy Rebrov – the one-time Tottenham Hotspur frontman – and only 11 off equalling Uzbekistan icon Maksim Shatskikh with 124
injury-hit start to the season – and with his 36th birthday only a few months away – Yarmolenko may have had a nagging feeling in the back of his mind telling him he was destined to fall short
⚽️ 29 квітня відзначаємо Всеукраїнський день футболу 💙💛Цього дня в 1992 році відбувся перший офіційний матч національної збірної України 📆 pic.twitter.com/OVqa4y4c86
But with three goals in four games across April – enough to earn him a nomination for the division’s Player of the Month award – Shatskikh’s record suddenly feels beatable
even if the veteran winger’s hopes rest on whether the Dynamo bosses opt to hand him a fresh contract
And as Yarmolenko proves his ‘class’ is very much permanent
the former Borussia Dortmund demon breaks into double figures for an eighth different season over two spells in the blue and white of Dynamo Kyiv
“You can see for yourself what experience and class he has,” Dynamo defender Oleksandr Karavayev smiles
“I am glad that I have the opportunity to play next to such legends as Yarmolenko.”
Whipping a sublime shot into the top corner against Obolon a couple of weeks ago – dusting off that old party piece – while Andriy Yarmolenko has lost a yard or two of pace his left boot is as lethal as ever
Residents in Energy Minister Chris Bowen's electorate have called out Labor and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese ahead of the Federal Election
Some frustrated voters in Energy Minister Chris Bowen's electorate appear to be turning against the Labor Party
declaring it is time for a change after just one term in power
has been a safe Labor-seat for many years and held by Mr Bowen since 2004
In the 2022 election the Energy Minister emerged victorious over the Liberal candidate with a 1.9 per cent swing in favour of Labor and an overall margin of 9.5 per cent
AM Agenda host Laura Jayes was in the electorate on Wednesday and spoke to voters about how they had fared under the Albanese government over the last three years
One visibly frustrated local in Fairfield did not hold back
issuing a blistering rebuke of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese amid the ongoing cost of living crisis
"This place has gone to the dogs since that man’s been in power
I know a lot of people that are really doing it tough and I think he’s had his chance," he told to Sky News
"Lots of deficits for at least the next 10 years and they’re sprouting that they’re efficient
Another man told Jayes young families are doing it tough under Labor
the wife sometimes can’t work because she’s got the kids you know
How are they going to live on one income?" he asked
While a cafe owner said business is harder and there is "no work" for locals
The Liberals have put forward Carmen Lazar as the woman to take on Mr Bowen
Ms Lazar defected after she fell out with the Energy Minister who backed a former federal police officer to contest the state seat of Fairfield
The opposition is hoping to pick up key Labor seats in the city's west amid frustrations from the community
with cost of living one of the biggest concerns for families
Other key Sydney electorates that are likely to be closely-fought are the Labor-held seats of Parramatta
Independent MP for Fowler Dai Le said the response from the Albanese government to offer a $5-a-week tax relief from next year is "too little too late"
especially in Labor-safe seats in western and south-western Sydney they've forgotten
they haven't announced any major infrastructure for this area," she said
"I have been calling for the east-west connect because it's very critical for our community to connect Sydney to the Western Sydney Airport
They disconnected us from opportunities and jobs

Jarrod Bowen suffered the injury during the first half of West Ham's defeat to Liverpool on Sunday. Richard Pelham/Getty ImagesWest Ham captain Jarrod Bowen will be sidelined for an extended period with a fractured left foot
The England international suffered the injury during Sunday's 5-0 loss to Premier League leaders Liverpool and was substituted in the second half
"The injury to his left foot, picked up in the first half at London Stadium, will sideline the Hammers captain heading into the New Year," West Ham said in a statement
Bowen has been a key player for Julen Lopetegui's struggling West Ham team this season
The 28-year-old confirmed in a post on social media that he had tried to play on after sustaining the injury
"As always I tried to fight on and continue playing until I physically couldn't," Bowen wrote on Instagram
but I'm already looking forward to getting back out there as soon as possible
However, West Ham will take heart from striker Michail Antonio being discharged from hospital on Tuesday
