Port Melbourne and Box Hill battle in the air
and while the Borough have the front position on this occasion
the Hawks dominated the overall marking statistics
strong and skilful for Port Melbourne in Wonthaggi
the Borough commendably stuck to its task ensuring a decent spectacle for local and visiting fans
Melbourne is expected to be home to 9 million people – a city the size of London today
As Australia’s largest housing project
we’re carefully planning now to ensure the areas around SRL East stations will be ready to meet the needs of our growing population
Building the new underground stations at Cheltenham
Burwood and Box Hill provides an opportunity to enhance the surrounding neighbourhoods (or precincts)
The new stations will support the delivery of 70,000 additional homes and more housing choice in the SRL East neighbourhoods – right where people want to live
We’re planning to ensure these areas benefit from an improved range of infrastructure and services
open space and community facilities – all on the doorstep of world-class public transport
SRL released the draft structure plans and draft planning scheme amendments that will guide development in SRL East neighbourhoods for public feedback from Monday 17 March to Tuesday 22 April 2025
The draft structure plans and draft planning scheme amendments are supported by more than 60 technical studies
detailed analysis and ongoing consultation
however you can still view the draft structure plans
draft planning scheme amendments and supporting materials online
Visit Engage Vic to view the documents
Structure Plans for SRL East Precincts will set out a shared vision and provide a framework for how areas around the new stations will grow and change over time while protecting and preserving the features people love about them now
The plans will guide change in each precinct over decades by defining the preferred outcomes important to the local area
the structure planning boundaries for the areas around the 6 new SRL East stations are now confirmed
Planning Scheme Amendments (PSAs) will be required to implement structure plans into the planning schemes of the cities of Bayside
SRLA has prepared Guidelines to guide the preparation and assessment of Structure Plans within these Structure Plan Areas. View the Guidelines for the preparation of Structure Plans
Using community feedback, local studies and ongoing planning, we have prepared draft structure plans and draft planning scheme amendments for each SRL East Precinct – the neighbourhoods around the 6 new underground SRL stations
Building on previous community feedback gathered since 2019
engagement to inform SRL East structure planning to date has been via 2 key phases starting from mid 2023
we have been engaging with communities and stakeholders about the opportunities
issues and suggestions for each of the SRL East Precincts
there has been further conversation with stakeholders in relation to structure planning
local councils have been engaged on the draft planning scheme amendments as the responsible authorities for their respective planning schemes
You can find out more about this engagement, as well as how SRLA has responded to this feedback, in the SRL East Structure planning engagement report
You can read about how feedback has been shaping the delivery of SRL East rail infrastructure and precincts in our past engagement reports.
A crucial step in the process of implementing new structure plans and planning scheme amendments is making all key documents available for public consultation.
From Monday 17 March to Tuesday 22 April 2025, the draft structure plans and draft planning scheme amendments were available for public review and feedback. This ensured all stakeholders and community members could review the documents, including any corresponding technical reports, and understand how the proposed changes will affect their neighbourhoods.
The feedback gathered during this time will be provided to an advisory committee for the next phase in approvals later in 2025.
The VFL Cats have suffered their first defeat of the 2025 season, falling to Box Hill Hawks by 46 points at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Geelong were dominant early and finished the first quarter with a 21 point lead, but Hawthorn quickly gained the ascendancy and the Cats were unable to put a stop to their attack.
Charlie McCartin was excellent in the back half for Geelong collecting 25 disposals, 13 intercept possessions and 11 marks, continuing to prove himself as a defensive powerhouse for the Cats.
Nathan Kreuger demonstrated his versatility as a forward booting three goals, while Jay Polkinghorne also impacted the scoreboard with three goals, matching his performance against the Casey Demons.

Box Hill were quick to hit the scoreboard kicking the first goal of the match
but Oli Wiltshire countered immediately with a major of his own which set the tone for a fast paced opening quarter
Both sides were locked in an arm wrestle before the composed midfield pairing of Jhye Clark and Jay Rantall helped build up attacks along the wings
setting up three goals shared between Osca Riccardi and Nathan Kreuger
Geelong held a 21 point lead heading into the second term
but Box Hill kicked three unanswered goals early in the quarter to arrest momentum
before Jay Polkinghorne kicked his first of the day in an attempt to stop the Hawks flow
Another goal to Box Hill closed the gap to just one point which then encouraged the Cats to hold possession for the majority of the quarter
lead by McCartin’s impressive six intercepts
The Hawks managed another string of three majors to finish the half
leaving Geelong trailing behind by 10 points at the main break
Box Hill once again hit the scoreboard early after half time kicking two goals
before Patrick Retschko booted an impressive goal for the Cats
Geelong’s backline worked hard in the second half
motivated by the efforts of their leaders Dan Capiron (nine marks
six intercept possessions) and Marcus Herbert (24 disposals
six intercept possessions) who helped cover the defensive 50
Geelong found themselves 36 points adrift heading into the final quarter
but the determined Cats side continued to fight hard against a flurry of Box Hill attacks
The Cats found some success through the centre
Mitch Duncan facilitating the build up from half back
then through to George Stevens who worked it forward
Polkinghorne and Wiltshire both kicked one major each in the last term before Box Hill sealed the game with two late goals
the Cats ultimately falling by 46 points at GMHBA Stadium

Box Hill went 2-0 after a nine-point win over North Melbourne in a Saturday afternoon clash at Box Hill City Oval
VFL Senior Coach Zane Littlejohn said it was another great result
“The most pleasing thing from a coach's perspective was the players' mentality to continue to just find a way when the game wasn't looking exactly how he wanted it to and to wrestle the momentum back,” he said
We’ll have a little scratch match with Essendon on the Gather Round weekend just to keep our boys going and get some footy under their belt.”
Littlejohn reviewed all 12 AFL-listed Hawks' performances from the match and gave a few VFL player shoutouts
“So probably a PB (personal best) game for Henry at our level
his clearance work is one of his real weapons
it's the balance of that stat line for us that we were really pleased with
He's becoming a real leader at our level now and starting to showcase that he can play above VFL level consistently now
his stoppage clearance work was a highlight.”
Enjoy Henry Hustwaite's standout VFL performance for Box Hill
“A real step forward again for Jai and he has done it for 12 months now
he was able to do that as a real general for us down there
was able to start a lot of our Hawks-ball for us as well and again
just a really consistent performance from Jai
He’s become arguably one of the most consistent players at VFL level
Now he's just able to turn up regularly for us and get his job done.”
I think by far Ned's best game I've seen him play at our level
but he really controlled the big-man department on the weekend
and he's the dominant big man on the ground
He’s had 18 and he's gone forward and kicked two goals
he had seven clearances himself and three contested marks
“This is a young man who I'm really pleased with how he responded
I think just finding the pace of the game again after having sort of a week out was really pleasing as the game went on
So he struggled early but what I was really pleased with was when he was getting beaten
he put his hand up to say that he was getting beaten in the game early
he started to find a bit more of the Bodie that we know
was hard to play against and he got some reward with that
would have looked nasty for the people there
but he was able to get back on the ground and really compete
He took a really crucial mark late in the game
he's just got to continue to be really consistent with all these contests now
not sort of win one or half one and then lose the next two and then win the next one
We want a real mentality of hard to play against with our backs
and he's able to do that at times but with any young draftee
it's just about consistency with them in that area.”
what we love about Cody is just his willingness to turn up and pressure consistently
What I think was the highlight of Cody's game this week was his ability to show speed and power on the outside
He really broke the lines and was really powerful with ball in hand
He's starting to really adapt well to his forward craft and all we've asked for Cody is to find ways to put pressure on the game
we’ve got high expectations for him at our level and where he can go
But he was able to have an influence on the game again
to help us out in the second ruck department and give us great use in that area of the ground as well
What we love about Rama is his ability to cover the ground as a big he's a tough matchup for any defender
especially because he can run and go at you in the air
“I think we were so lucky to have Sam Frost play for our football club on the weekend
his endeavour and his want to win were on show
they were both Jaspers Scaife’s two goals in the last quarter
And I guess you've got to see the tape to realise his increases in his bodywork to protect Scaifey
went back behind the ball to shore us up and sort of help us ice the game
yeah great leader and experienced player to have in our footy team
We loved what he was able to bring both off the field
It's just great to see him back out there playing and being tough and physical like we know Frosty can be.”
“Hilly spent a bit of time at both ends of the ground this week
We just wanted to use his speed in the front end and as we know
was probably a bit unlucky not to get rewarded with a few of his tackles
But his pressure and his energy are elite and we really love what he's able to bring in that space
So he'll continue to learn his craft and as we know
it’s just about consistency with these guys
And he'll be showing great consistency with the pressure side of his game
It's now just supporting him in developing all other aspects of his game.”
“Was pleasing to see him hit the scoreboard this week
starting to get a bit more of the ball on the outside
but he spent the majority of the day forward
What I really loved with Will was his ability to work hard
his work rate is going to create for others
and that's what we're seeing at the moment
he's just got to keep buying into that side of the game and working really hard
he's going to continue to be in the right spot
and that's the versatility he's able to give us is awesome.”
probably didn't have the best first three quarters he would have liked
when we really needed him to stand up was super strong
we needed a big contested mark down the line
and he was able to take it and he kicked truly
We know he's a beautiful kick at the footy
his mentality to stay in the game for long periods of the game was awesome.”
I thought he had way more influence on the game than the stat line says
His ability to defend hard this week was awesome
They brought a lot of forwards up to the stoppage and Baz was quite often caught high in that role
But he defended really positively in that space
but we saw some of his dash and run and create off half-back
although the stat line doesn't read high for Baz
he had more of an influence on the game than that says
“I'm going to give a shoutout this week to our Captain
but his work this week in front of the ball and his contest work was sensational
and he drew two 50-metre penalties late in the game for us
We worked really closely with the leaders last week and with close finishes and just how to be adaptive through games when the score is not looking how we want it to look
“Great to have 'Milky' back at our footy club
and we're starting to see some real growth in his inside game
He’s working really hard on that and the pleasing thing is
six first possessions into seven clearances is a great return
which we would all remember before he got drafted to Fremantle
so he's starting to find a bit of himself again
His toughness is really starting to come through again as well
“And just another shout out to Kye Declase
who obviously played his 100th VFL game this week
and kicked his 100th goal at VFL level as well.”

Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) crews have discovered an abundance of hidden treasures and trinkets beneath the surface in Melbourne’s east and south east
which offer a glimpse of life in Clayton and Box Hill almost 150 years ago
Around 14,000 artefacts dating as far back as the early 19th Century have been recovered during a 3-week archaeological dig near the existing Clayton train station on Haughton Road, where 2 new community spaces are nearing completion.
Artefacts found include historic household items used by local residents between 1870-1920.
The Clayton township was originally gazetted on Dandenong Road, but in 1862, a second Clayton township developed with the opening of Clayton Station in 1880. It’s a notable parallel to today’s modern world with SRL set to spur on a similar wave of residential, social and economic development.
During the late 1800s, the Clayton Station was managed by a female stationmaster – unusual for the time – who lived just south of the Metro Station.
Artefacts discovered in this area include dinner and glassware; champagne, medicine and ink bottles; building materials; children’s toys including dominoes, marbles and parts of porcelain dolls and soldiers; sketchboards; a harmonica; and a metal buckle from a saddle.
Further north, artefacts found in Box Hill Gardens show evidence of domestic life in the early 1900s, including ceramics, glass bottles, nails and even cooked bones.
Box Hill was founded as a township in the 1850s, and by 1871 had a population of 154. The train station was built when the rail line was extended from Camberwell to Lilydale in 1882. A new school opened in 1887, setting the scene for growth in the area. Today it’s home to more than 14,000 people and continues to grow and thrive.
Archeologists are cataloguing and assessing the items and we will work with Heritage Victoria to determine what will happen to the artefacts. And as we recognise the past, we also look to the future of these thriving suburbs with SRL.
The SRL station at Clayton will become a transport super hub, connecting passengers from the Cranbourne/Pakenham and Gippsland lines and improving access to world-class hospitals and medical research centres.
The station area and surrounding neighbourhood will provide open and green spaces, new and upgraded walking and cycling tracks and will attract more residents and businesses. In Box Hill, SRL will make it easier to access the area’s growing education and health services, including Box Hill Institute and Box Hill Hospital. The new underground station will be surrounded by new and upgraded plazas, and a new linear park on Whitehorse Road.
As Australia’s largest housing project, SRL will deliver thousands more homes where they’re needed – on the doorstep of jobs, services and world-class public transport. Tunnelling starts in 2026 and trains will be taking passengers in 2035.
Frankston will aim to celebrate Trent Mynott’s 100th Smithy’s VFL game against Werribee at Melbourne Avalon Airport Oval by doing something that hasn’t happened in his lifetime.
And Brisbane Lions star Keidean Coleman will make his long awaited return from his knee reconstruction when his club brings back the Bears in its VFL QClash against Gold Coast at Brighton Homes Arena on Sunday.
Dolphins skipper Mynott, 25, was still more than two years away from being born when his club last sung the song against the Tigers in the Werribee rooms on August 3, 1997.
Since then the Big W have record 13 wins by an average of nearly nine goals in that time, although they did beat Sydney and North Melbourne there in 2021 and 2018 respectively.
Mynott has now played 56 games for Frankston and has yet to beat Werribee, with 2009 being the Dolphins’ last victory over the Tigers anywhere.
But the club’s confidence would never have been higher, sitting in fourth spot on 3-1 while the Tigers are 13th at 2-3, and with star recruit Will Hamill returning from a hamstring injury the Dolphins will give themselves every chance of breaking the drought.
Brisbane will wear the old Bears pyramid guernsey and run out to the original Dare To Beat The Bear song in both VFL and AFL this week, with Coleman being joined in the team by AFL omissions James Tunstill and Darcy Fort.
The returning James Creighton and Sherwood debutant Ryan Gilder have also been named, with Will McLachlan and Conor McKenna promoted while Curtis McCarthy and Wyatt Greenaway are both in concussion protocols.
Stars Suns defender Caleb Graham returns after being a late exclusion last week, with Zai Millane coming in from Academy duties.
Northern Bullants and Port Melbourne will be fighting for their first wins of the season when they lock horns at Genis Steel Oval.
The Bullants have had the hardest fixture in the competition with consecutive trips to Footscray, Geelong, Gold Coast and Frankston and will relish the chance to return home for the first time this year.
Although they will do it without captain Liam Mackie, who has a minor hand injury, with recruit Harry Flynn, ex-Borough player Sam Green and Wal Wuol all coming in.
The Borough has added 200cm Alex Alessio, the second son of former star Essendon ruckman Steve, to their list and rushed him in for a VFL debut straight out of the Calder Cannons.
Williamstown star Luke Parks will play his 50th VFL as the Seagulls try to get their season back on track against Southport at DSV Stadium on Saturday.
The injury-riddled Seagulls have slipped to 1-4 with a tough fixture staring them in the face and could see their finals hopes all but gone by mid-season if they can’t claim a big scalp.
And there are none bigger at the moment than the undefeated Grand Finalists, who have lost Jacob Heron to a minor hamstring and Wylie Buzza to illness but have the luxury of replacing them with Jesse Joyce and Will Sexton.
Parks has been holding Williamstown together this season with Fin O’Dwyer’s return last week easing the pressure, but the home team will have to do it without Jack Toner, who copped a two-week suspension last week and has been replaced by Tom Mundy.
Tom Downie played his 150th State league game last week and will be looking forward to a huge battle with Sharks gun Brayden Crossley.
Coburg has lost star signing Jack Bytel with a hamstring injury for its crucial clash with Carlton at Barry Plant Park.
Bytel was hurt early in the stunning win over Williamstown but should only miss the clash with the Blues, although the news is worse for skipper Jesse Corigliano, a late withdrawal from the Seagulls game with an ankle that has ruled him out for two months.
The Lions will mark recruit Matt Allison’s 50th VFL game in the clash, with Carlton losing Sam Docherty and Lachie Cowan to AFL duty, replacing them with Dane Harvey and Kristian Ferronato.
Caleb Poulter will play his 50th VFL game in Footscray’s trip to Victoria Park to meet Collingwood on Saturday, with the Bulldogs regaining Nick Coffield from a hamstring injury for his first game since Round 1.
They also bring back Luke Kennedy from concussion, while draftee Josh Dolan drops back from the AFL team to make his VFL debut alongside Round 2 hero Cooper Hynes and young speedster Diesel Moloney.
But the Dogs have lost Liam Jones, Jordan Croft and Josh Kellett to injury.
The Magpies have named recruits Ben De Bolfo and Michael Kiraly for their first games in black and white, while big-bodied North Albury youngster Josh Murphy will make his debut alongside Brady Grey and Josh Tovey.
Mason Cox is back in the AFL team, with Charlie West, Ed Allan and Oleg Markov also held over and Joel Cochran in concussion protocols.
Richmond coach Jake Batchelor has wielded the axe after the Tigers’ horror showing against Casey Demons, making five unforced changes to meet Box Hill Hawks under lights at Kinetic Stadium. Joel Garner, Campbell Gray, Tom Sims, Aussie Johnson and Liam George all bolster the line-up.
The Hawks have named Leongatha product Max Donohue to make his debut alongside livewire Jake Arundell, with Finn Maginness and Changkuoth Jiath called up by Hawthorn.
Sydney and GWS Giants each have a debutant for their VFL Derby at the SCG on Sunday, with the Swans naming Academy top-ager Cameron Este, another Pennant Hills product, and the Giants calling up Manly-Warringah’s Sam McMeeken.
The Swans regain Lachie Hunter, Pierce Roseby and AFL omissions Peter Ladhams and Tom Hanily but lose Joel Hamling and Gus Sheldrick in the other direction and Patrick Snell to illness.
Meanwhile, the Giants get Conor Stone back from AFL duty with Callum Brown, Joe Fonti and debutant Josaia Delana going the other way and James Leake injured.
Luckless North Melbourne high-flyer Brayden George will make his long-awaited return from a second knee reconstruction when the Kangaroos take on Essendon in the Smithy’s VFL Round 6 opener at Windy Hill on Friday.
George, 21, was originally considered a top 10 chance in the 2022 draft but slid to No. 26 after suffering his first ACL injury during a dominant top-age year with the Murray Bushrangers that yielded 18 goals in eight matches.
He didn’t play at all in 2023 but returned in the VFL last year, playing across half-back and showing his marking prowess in eight appearances before landing awkwardly in a marking contest in Round 12 and requiring a second knee reconstruction.
The Girgarre product via Wangaratta Rovers will play managed minutes against the Bombers, with the Kangaroos making seven significant changes.
Aidan Corr and Darcy Tucker return from AFL duties and Zac Fisher, Griffin Logue and Matt Whitlock from injury as young North Hobart product Nathaniel Sulzberger makes his debut.
Bailey Scott, Will Phillips, Kallan Dawson, Riley Hardeman and Finnbar Maley have been called into the AFL team, while Adam Tomlinson has been rested from the Roos team that produced a thrilling win over Carlton on Good Friday,
Dangerous Essendon forward Matt Guelfi and 200cm swingman Nik Cox will play their first games of the year, while first-year defender Angus Clarke has recovered from a broken collarbone suffered in Round 2, with Will Hoare being managed.
Guelfi had hamstring surgery in February to delay his start to the year, while Cox’s off-season was disrupted by concussion symptoms and his return put on the backburner by a calf injury.
The Bombers also have a debutant, with Calder Cannons and Greenvale teenager Kieran Gallagher to play his first game.
BROADCAST AND STREAMING: All matches in the 2025 Smithy’s VFL season will be live streamed free via the AFL website, AFL Live Official App and VFL App. The Seven Network will broadcast a match live and free on 7mate in Victoria and 7plus Sport nationally every Saturday night. The Box Hill Hawks will have four representatives travelling to Adelaide this weekend to play in the AAMI State Games.
The famous rivalry between the SANFL and VFL will reignite this weekend with men’s and women’s representative teams to clash in South Australia as part of the AFL’s Gather Round.
From the Hawks VFLW side, new recruit Maddi Torpey will don the Big V in the inaugural clash.
Torpey joined Box Hill from the Sandringham Zebras, the young aerial ruck made a fast impression in the brown and gold, being named in the side’s leadership group. She’s had strong showings in the Hawks preseason matches to date in 2025.
The men's team will see three Hawks in Ethan Stanley, Kye Declase and Sam Durdin line up for Victoria, while Hawks skipper Callum Porter will be the travelling emergency.
Stanley returned to the Box Hill Hawks this season after a stint on Fremantle’s AFL list and has impressed in his two games so far this season. He finished with 18 disposals and a game-high three clearances in Round 1 and in Round 2 he booted two goals from 18 disposals.
Declase played his 100th VFL game in just his second outing with the Hawks after making the move from Werribee, where he booted his 100th goal at the level in the same match. He managed 25 disposals in Round 1, and two goals and 13 disposals in Round 2 for Box Hill.
Durdin has yet to pull on the brown and gold stripes since joining the Hawks, but as a former AFL-listed Blue, the defender’s intercepting and contested marking ability are well-known and sure to be an asset to the Victorian side.
It won’t only be players from the Hawks nest representing the Big V this weekend, with Box Hill Hawks Senior Coach and Hawthorn Development Coach Zane Littlejohn spearheading the coaching panel for the VFL side.
As well as Box Hill Specialist Coach and Hawthorn AFLW Backline Coach Steph Binder joining the VFLW coaching panel as an assistant coach.
The inaugural women’s clash will take place on Friday 11 April from 6.30pm (local time) at Alberton Oval. With the men’s sides playing off at Tanunda Recreation Park in the Barossa on Saturday 12 April from 2.45pm (local time).

its fifth development site in the eastern Melbourne suburb
comprising 6661sq m of premium office space and 1390sq m of retail amenities across ground and first levels
The top executive floor would be customisable to suit the occupant’s business vision
The development would include two basement levels providing 41 car spaces and 50 bicycle parking spots with end-of-trip facilities
Golden Age Group, led by Jeff Xu, acquired the 1119sq m vacant site in July of 2023 for $13 million
The property was bought through Carrington Road Management
The approval process involved a formal amendment to the plans in December
The Victorian Department of Transport and Planning assessed the application through its Development Facilitation Program
The development would incorporate several sustainability initiatives
Golden Age Group now holds more than 6ha across five sites in Box Hill
making it reportedly the largest private landholder in the suburb
The company’s other Box Hill projects include the mixed-use SKY SQR precinct
which is due to top out soon and open later this year; the completed Sky One tower; and residential developments Hay Street (Wembley Hill) and Jade apartments
The development aligns with the Box Hill Metropolitan Activity Centre Structure Plan
when the population is expected to grow by up to 14,000 people
Golden Age Group’s portfolio includes Collins House, Victoria One, Sky Garden, the Harrington Collection at The Rocks in Sydney, Ace Hotel at Surry Hills and a 77-townhouse project in Melbourne’s east
Essendon VFL played out a solid 60-minute practice match against Box Hill on Saturday morning
With the VFL and VFLW competitions having a league-wide bye over Gather Round
the Clubs took the opportunity to host the hit-out at the NEC Hangar
each fielding a strong number of AFL-listed players across the lines
Opting to play four fixed 15-minute quarters
the Bombers were able to bring back key forward Peter Wright for his return from injury
with the big man slotting three goals and looking in good touch
Often taking matchups against experienced AFL-listed defenders in Sam Frost and Jack Scrimshaw
Wright also paired nicely with VFL-listed small forward Oskar Smartt
who was among the side’s best and kicked a cracking checkside goal from the boundary line in the third term
Kayle Gerreyn and Archer Day-Wicks got the Dons up and going with two early goals – the latter with a long-range belter from beyond the 50-metre arc
Following a Luamon Lual major and Wright’s first from the pocket
the Bombers took a one-point lead into the main break – the margin barely deviated throughout the day with both sides trading goals frequently
Zak Johnson’s composure and distribution from the back half provided moments of nice ball movement
while Todd Goldstein’s presence in the ruck also created good opportunity for midfielders in Jordan Busuttil and Jackson Hately to get first hands at clearances
Jayden Laverde added experience to the last line in his second game back from injury
while youngsters such as Rhys Unwin and Vigo Visentini continue to show promising signs in their exposures at VFL level this season

Box Hill and Port Melbourne head out to Wonthaggi in a unique Sunday country clash
while the remaining four games are on Saturday
Our match in focus for Round 2 is the huge contest between unbeaten sides Box Hill and Port Melbourne
April 27 @ 2:35pmWonthaggi Recreation Reserve
Box Hill signalled its premiership intentions with a crushing win over Geelong down at Deakin University in Round 1
While the Cats won the wooden spoon this year and likely won’t feature in the premiership race
the Hawks still did what they needed to do to get the job done
having fought past a talented Essendon side at home by 19 points
Now the two teams go head-to-head in a massive contest at Box Hill
Port Melbourne had 14 scoring shots from 20 inside 50 entries in Round 1 which was an incredible feat of efficiency
though the Borough would like to get more entries if they are to match it with the scoring power of the Hawks
Box Hill piled on a deadly accurate 14.4 (88) from 29 entries and really put Geelong to the sword with that accuracy
The danger signs for Port Melbourne heading into this one is the fact the Borough had 41 less disposals than the Bombers
as well as almost half the inside 50s (36-20)
and were below in most other areas including the hitouts and clearances where they were minus-11 and minus-four respectively
Box Hill dominated the clearances 27-19 off the back of a 30-22 hitout difference and had seven more inside 50s (29-22) despite breaking even in disposals (200-apiece)
Isla Baldwin (Box Hill) crossed over from the Blues after finishing equal second in Carlton’s best and fairest last season
Endearing herself to the Hawks fans pretty quickly
Baldwin collected all 10 coaches votes in the Round 1 win – the only player in the competition to do so – with a game of 17 disposals
Stasia Stevenson (Box Hill) was unlucky not to get a look-in at last year’s AFLW Draft and did her chances no harm with a highly contest performance against the Cats
She won 16 disposals – 14 contested – laid eight tackles and had three clearances
though most importantly still booted two goals and had three score involvements in the match
Kaitlyn O’Keefe (Port Melbourne) plays such a key role for the Borough
and was able to apply plenty of scoreboard pressure and important touches in the front half of the ground
while kicking two majors and finishing with three score involvements during the Round 1 win
Olivia Fogarty (Box Hill) is a mature-age prospect on the Hawks radars having trained with the AFLW side last season
Really smart around goal and having made the move down from Ainslie
Fogarty only turns 27 in July so is hitting the prime of her career
An ex-soccer player who has a penetrating kick and adds outside class to the inside grunt of the Hawks
Denahy Maloney is athletic and not only wins hitouts but clearances as well
All 10 of her disposals were contested and she lies four tackles
Box Hill looks like a genuine premiership contender on paper
and while more experienced opponents than the young
Given Box Hill has a great balance of experience and youth across all three lines
the Hawks looks that bit more reliable than Port Melbourne who still has plenty of talent but cannot rely on winning the way the Borough did against the Bombers in Round 1 to get the points

Box Hill United FC officially kicked off their 2025 season earlier this month
with a celebration of the club’s rich 100-plus-year history and an exciting look ahead to its future
attendees were treated to the highly anticipated launch of A Century of Soccer – The History of Box Hill’s Soccer Clubs 1922-2025
a book written by the late Lynne Harper and her son Kyle Patterson
The comprehensive publication chronicles more than a century of soccer in Box Hill
from the club’s foundation in 1922 and its first official match in 1925
It tells the story of the rich history and evolution of football in Box Hill and the hard work done by so many in its community.
One remarkable tale that doesn’t appear in A Century of Soccer is how the book itself came to be
Co-author Kyle Patterson shared the incredible journey of rediscovering his mother’s work which had been lost for more than 30-years and bringing it to completion
“The manuscript for this great book was lost for a long time,” Patterson revealed
“My mother passed away from cancer in 1993
former club members never stopped asking about it
‘Have you found the manuscript?’ It became like the Bermuda Triangle.”
the manuscript resurfaced in the garage of a deceased committee member
it came to me through a former club president
Patterson reflected on the emotional significance of the book’s release
Following the heartfelt discussion on the club’s history
Box Hill United FC announced their ongoing efforts to secure additional government funding
These funds will support the club’s vision of upgrading Sparks Reserve
ensuring continued growth and development required now and for future generations
plans to transform the current grass area of Sparks Reserve into a year-round synthetic surface
along with essential upgrades such as new lighting
This facility will allow for better training and playing conditions for all ages
particularly reducing the strain on Wembley Park
This will not be the first time the club has received funding to upgrade their facilities at Sparks Reserve
Box Hill received $2.8m in government funding which was used to build a new satellite pavilion with four female-friendly changerooms
public toilets and a covered external concourse for spectator viewing
All levels of Government were well represented at the event
including Federal Labor Candidates Gabriel Ng and Katie Allen; Federal Liberal Member for Menzies Keith Wolahan; Victorian Labor Member for Box Hill Paul Hamer and Victorian Liberal Member Richard Welch MP; alongside Mayor Andrew Davenport and Councillors from the City Of Whitehorse
Federal Member for Menzies Keith Wolahan and State Member for Box Hill Paul Hamer took to the stage to discuss the population growth of the area and the crucial position clubs and their facilities play in healthy communities.
a population the size of London's by 2035." Said Wolahan.
open spaces and clubs like this will matter more than ever."
Copies of A Century of Soccer – The History of Box Hill’s Soccer Clubs are now available for purchase. For more information on how to get your copy, contact the club.

What went right: Box Hill started the season strongly with four wins in its first five matches
with the Hawks producing some electric footy against Geelong and North Melbourne and overcoming a horror injury to Sam Butler to charge over the top of Sydney
The character to respond after seeing a 42-point lead whittled away by Sandringham in Wonthaggi was outstanding and they reached Round 12 at 8-3
Going 3-1 in single-figure games is a good result
Max Hall’s committed off-season and breakout start to the year saw him get his AFL opportunity with St Kilda in the mid-season draft
Bailey Macdonald an impressive second year and Bodie Ryan a terrific first
What went wrong: The horror broken leg to Butler about the same time as Ben Cavarra was returning from his ACL robbed the Hawks of an extremely dangerous cog in their wheel
having kicked 10 goals in three and a half matches
They did not have a player kick 20 goals for the year and as a result the better teams were mostly a level above them
although they did push Werribee to 11 points and beat Geelong twice
While Hall’s selection in the mid-season draft was a great outcome
Jaylon Thorpe only managed eight games and then there was the luckless James Parsons
who looked redhot in the opening game against Casey Demons before tearing his achilles
Summary: Box Hill is a team that always seems to float along under the radar
but it is always thereabouts and extremely tough to defeat
The strength of its VFL squad is the biggest advantage for this proud club as it expertly combines the Mustang spirit with the Hawk expertise – which should be the envy of all clubs to have had an AFL alignment over the past 25 seasons
The Hawks haven’t missed the finals since 2016
they would be disappointed to lose a home elimination final to Williamstown but seventh seems like about the right result given they went 3-5 against the top six and 4-6 against the rest of the top 10

Thirteen locally-manufactured concrete beams have been lifted into place
forming the structure of a temporary bridge being built in Whitehorse Road as part of Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East construction
The temporary bridging structure will allow you to continue to use Whitehorse Road while we build the new SRL East station below ground from 2026
The just over 28m-long beams were constructed by local pre-cast concrete manufacturer Westkon in Melton
SRL East in Box Hill will provide a convenient cross-suburb connection to jobs
health services and study opportunities in one of Melbourne’s fastest growing education and medical centres
as well as linking to the Belgrave/Lilydale line
SRL East will help local students travel to Monash University in just 10 minutes
Box Hill’s new underground station will open by 2035
traffic-free access between SRL and the existing metro train station
A new green boulevard and public space will be created along Whitehorse Road
The Box Hill Hawks produced a stunning final-quarter surge to secure a six-point victory over Port Melbourne in a hard-fought clash in Wonthaggi on Sunday
the Hawks showed enormous resilience to overturn Port Melbourne’s small lead and run out 5.10 (40) to 5.4 (34) winners
applying early scoreboard pressure and forcing Box Hill to play catch-up through the first three quarters
the Hawks struggled to capitalise on inside 50 opportunities which resulted in a few missed shots at goal
a dominant midfield effort from Isla Baldwin (16 disposals) and Ellie McLinden (15 disposals) had the Hawks take back control of the contest
Nat Exon and Rebecca Neaves also provided crucial drive
Box Hill’s spread of goalkickers proved decisive
with Fogarty’s late goal giving the Hawks the lead for the first time
Despite a few nervous moments as Port Melbourne pressed forward
and a series of behinds extended the Hawks’ advantage
ensuring they stayed just out of reach. With now two wins on the board for the 2025 season
the Hawks will look to continue this energy and excellent display of footy into the coming rounds
Lloyd Meek has been voted the Round 7 Superhero of the Week
Work has started on a temporary bridge to keep traffic moving in Box Hill during construction of the new underground Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) station
The temporary bridge on Whitehorse Road will include pedestrian paths on both sides and will mean there’ll be minimal impact on the 30,000 cars which use the major arterial every day
while workers are carving out the new station below ground
drilling 23m-deep holes that will be filled with concrete to form the support structure
before excavating underneath and building the bridge deck
Traffic will be diverted onto the bridge before major construction starts on the underground station
traffic-free access between the SRL station and the existing metro train station
and a new green boulevard and public space along Whitehorse Road
SRL will help locals get to Cheltenham in 22 minutes or Monash University in just 10 minutes

A community health care centre that has operated in central Box Hill for 20 years is at risk of being turfed out of its premises by land speculation fuelled by the promised arrival of the Suburban Rail Loop
Nillumbik Community Health Services, a not-for-profit clinic that provides subsidised dental care, physiotherapy, podiatry and other services to people who can’t afford private treatment, is in a three-storey building about 100 metres from the proposed Box Hill SRL station in Melbourne’s east

The building is on the market for an undisclosed sum, with the realtors handling the sale promoting the possibility of future redevelopment of up to 24 storeys
holds a lease until June next year and an option for a further two years
Nillumbik Community Health Services chief executive Agata Jarbin said the asking price for her organisation to extend its lease was beyond its capacity to pay and the cost of moving prohibitively expensive
10 dental chairs that would need to be shifted to new premises
It pays about $337 per metre per annum on its current Carrington Road lease
which equates to rent of about $800,000 a year
The current market rate is above $500 per metre
which would mean a rent hike of nearly 50 per cent
“We are unable to extend the lease without additional financial support
and we have no certainty about the future of the building after the sale,” Jarbin said

to government and the (Whitehorse) council and looked at a number of avenues
there is no ready solution that anyone has recommended or offered.”
The clinic met last year with the Suburban Rail Loop Authority to discuss the rental squeeze but
despite the project’s draft structure plan for Box Hill identifying a future “health priority” area for more medical services
the authority did not suggest a more immediate fix
The Victorian Department of Health has so far not committed to extending the $520,000 annual rental subsidy it provides to healthAbility beyond the expiry of the clinic’s current lease
In response to questions from The Age, the Allan government declined to assure the clinic’s future in Box Hill beyond next year
“We will continue to work with communities every step of the way including in the delivery of essential services and programs for people in need
and local feedback will be really important in building and shaping these growing neighbourhoods,” a government spokesman said

Another major tenant within the building is Eastern Health
the public health network that runs Box Hill Hospital
Eastern Health is planning to shift its services to a new building in central Box Hill still under construction
raised the clinic’s plight in parliament this year
“HealthAbility delivers valued frontline care
but it’s been left behind by a Labor government that’s all spin and no substance,” he told this masthead
Despite Wolahan’s electorate of Menzies being a marginal seat, neither side of politics has proposed a solution during the election campaign
state government planning policies intended to provide better public transport and more housing for people in Box Hill could have the perverse consequence of forcing out a clinic that last year received $26.5 million in combined Commonwealth and state government funding to provide health services to the same
Box Hill’s population is forecast to double between now and 2041
The Suburban Rail Loop Authority calculates that over the same period
the population within a proposed structure plan area earmarked for high-density development near the train station will swell from 13,300 to 29,100 people
Box Hill was earmarked for high density development and population growth before the SRL was conceived
it was identified in the state government’s population planning as a future urban centre and later designated as a metropolitan activity centre
where planning laws allow for greater density development
The Allan government last month published its latest draft planning laws covering Box Hill and other proposed SRL stations
The planning scheme is due to be finalised next year
A survey of 905 patients conducted by healthAbility this month found that 84 per cent of respondents had a healthcare or concession card
and 77 per cent said it would be much harder for them to access the health services they need if the clinic moved away from Box Hill

There is a bus terminus at Box Hill Central [shopping centre] and good trains and heaps of car parks
Selina volunteers as an English teacher and says the clinic has a strong connection to Mandarin- and Cantonese-speaking Chinese communities in Box Hill
The clinic last year served just under 25,000 clients
Jarbin said the clinic was well-known within Box Hill and moving it away would have a significant impact on people who depended on its services
“The most vulnerable members of the community from Box Hill and surrounding suburbs will lose a really vital service on which they rely for their health and wellbeing,” she said

The Box Hill Hawks have moved to two-and-zero on the season
defeating North Melbourne by nine points on Saturday afternoon.Having been jumped out the gates
the Hawks trailed for the majority of the contest – and were as many as 29-points down late in the third term – before kicking seven of the final eight goals
Henry Hustwaite was sensational in the Box Hill engine room and by game’s end was the number one player on the ground for ranking points (126)
inside 50s (9) and contested possessions (25)
He was so dominant inside the contest his 25 contested possessions left him +15 on the nearest Kangaroo
while his 12 clearances were seven clear of the top ranked North Melbourne player
As if to underline his ball hunting ability on the day
Hustwaite also ranked number one among all Box Hill players for tackles with six
Hawks’ skipper Cal Porter was at his versatile best
deployed for large parts of the game as a defensive forward
Our no.55 finished with 20 touches and a goal
but did just as much damage of the ball to create space for teammates and ill-discipline from his opponents
Big-man Ned Reeves played one of his best games at VFL level
controlling the ruck all afternoon to finish with a game-high 34 hit-outs
Kye Declase left his mark on what was his 100th VFL match
extracting maximum impact from 14 hard-fought touches
Deployed mostly on a wing and between the arcs
Declase kicked two vital goals – one of which in the shadows of three quarter time was his 100th at the level – and was a threat throughout
Another to boot two classy goals was Ethan Stanley
who in his second stint at City Oval played one of best games in the brown and gold
His 18 touches were comprised of 12 contested possessions
most impressive of all given his reputation as a hard-running wingman
Lastly among the Hawks’ best players was fellow recruit Trent Bianco
The former Magpie did a little bit of everything on his way to 24 touches
playing predominantly inside for the first three quarters before going to half-back in the last term to shore things up
His seven inside 50s ranked third behind Hustwaite and Porter
while his four clearances and three rebound 50s underlined his exceptional work rate
Others to perform well on the day were marking forwards Jasper Scaife and Max Ramsden
The pair split five goals on the day and provided chop out support for Ned Reeves around the ground
At the other end of the field reigning best-and-fairest Jai Serong continues to impress
having become one of Zane Littlejohn’s most consistent and reliable contributors
laid four tackles and tallied a game-high seven rebounds 50s in another sterling display
On a day in which the key statistical indicators were fairly even
it was Box Hill’s dominance at stoppage which proved the tiebreaker
Stanley and Reeves finished +25 for clearances
suggesting the longer the game went first use became a factor
All told the Hawks lead for just 10-and-a-half minutes on the day
but most important of all had their noses in front come the final siren
Goalless until the final moments of the first term
Scaife’s opening goal of the day allowed Box Hill’s to escape a tricky first term just 17-points in arrears
Kye Declase booted his first of the day just 28 seconds into the second term
but back-to-back North majors saw the visitors race to a 25-point lead barely 10 minutes later
Reeves and Jack Sammartino – his first goal at the VFL level – trimmed the half-time deficit to just two points and set the stage for an enthralling second half
Ramsden’s second gave his side their first lead of the afternoon early in the third term
before the Kangaroos produced their best period of the day to move within touching distance of a sensational away win
Five goals without replay between the eight and 24 minute marks left the hosts 29-points behind and reeling… but salvation arrived deep into time on via the boots of Stanley and Declase
who popped up with back-to-back goals to give their side a sniff
Needing to win the final frame by three goals to win the match
Reeves’ second looked to have been the perfect start
but North’s Cooper Harvey was quick to cancel it out
With 18 final quarter minutes gone the hosts still needed three goals without reply to claim the points
the Hawks’ lead was nine and there wasn’t time enough for the Kangaroos to respond
Box Hill provided one of their own to remain undefeated ahead of back-to-back byes
The Hawks will next be in action against the Cats on Easter Sunday

Five Hawks featured on SEN throughout yesterday for Hawthorn’s Membership Day
The Box Hill Hawks’ hot start to 2025 continued on Sunday afternoon with a 38-point win over Port Melbourne in Wonthaggi
Zane Littlejohn’s charges moved to four-and-zero on the season and remain hot-on-the-heels of the similarly undefeated Giants and Southport
Quick out of the gates and in control for much of the first half-and-a-bit
the Hawks lead by as much as 40-points early in the third
before Port mounted a spirited challenge to trim the deficit to just 13-points at the final change
the Hawks booted the first three goals of the final quarter and six to two all told
A relatively even contest on the stats sheet
laid 16 more tackles and won four more clearances
Having taken the lead after just two minutes
Zane Littlejohn’s men would never trail and were
ultimately a bit more efficient when and where it mattered most
Finn Maginness was named his side’s best player on the day
The Hawks’ no.20 was ranked #1 on the ground in disposals (38)
inside 50s (8) and clearances (10); he was the equal #1 player on the ground for score involvements (5) and equal #2 in tackles (6)
His hardness inside the contest was complemented by his hard work on the spread and he was unquestionably the stand-out player on the ground
Maginness was ably supported in the Box Hill midfield mix by Ethan Stanley
who turned in his best display since returning to City Oval following a stint on Fremantle’s AFL list
The Frankston YCW product is known for his aerobic capacity and work-rate
but won a career-best 27 touches in and around the contest
including eight clearances and laid six tackles
Further underlining his strong work ethic was a return of five inside 50s and three rebound 50s
A strong contributor since crossing from Werribee to Box Hill in the off-season
four tackles and two-goal game were recognised with a nod from his coaches
That stat-line and his overall competitiveness was enough for Declase to be named his side’s third best on the day
Changkuoth Jiath put his hand up for a senior re-call with a strong showing across half back
“CJ” was at his dashing and energetic best for large parts of the day
bouncing out of defensive 50 with his trademark flair and imagination with ball in hand
Jiath was able to win a number of key defensive contests and relieve the pressure on his team
Fellow running half-back Seamus Mitchell was also among the Hawks’ best
working to support his team with 22 touches
he was attack-minded when required and defensively sound when needed
Last but certainly not least among the Hawks’ best players was key forward Jasper Scaife
The West Australian was the most dominant forward on the ground and finished his day’s work with 6.1 from 12 disposals and four marks
an excellent set-shot for goal and gets great bang for buck from limited opportunities
The big man was one of just five players on the ground to kick multiple goals
and was the only one to boot more than two
Other notable performances came from ruckman Ned Reeves
who did his best to control the contest for his midfielders; Jai Serong
who anchored the Hawks’ rearguard with another solid display; and the returning Calsher Dear
four marks and one goal was a heartening display off a long layoff
After a cagey opening in which just three behinds were scored through seven-and-a-half minutes
Box Hill found their rhythm and range with a four-goal burst that would ultimately set-up the four points
Jasper Scaife kicked his first to get things underway
before Max Ramsden doubled the Hawks’ lead shortly thereafter
Scaife’s second was quickly followed by Ned Reeves’ first and
Box Hill found themselves well placed in the shadows of quarter time
Tom Highmore pulled one back for the Borough
which was consolidated by Sam Philp once the second period got underway
the Hawks produced a stunning four-goal salvo
Starting with Calsher Dear’s first after nine minutes
captain Cal Porter added another two minutes later and by the time Declase kicked his first the lead was 38-points
Tom Hird followed Highmore’s lead in finding a late reply but the teams went to the long break separated by 28-points
Once play resumed youngsters the teams traded pairs of goals in a highly entertaining exchange
Cody Anderson and Bodie Ryan handed the Hawks the perfect start and a game-high lead
only for Josh Green and Jayden Davey to pinch them right back
Scaife’s fourth and Matt Hill’s first put the game on the brink of being broken wide open
before Owen Mulady and Archi Manson hit the scoreboard to keep the contest alive
Will McCabe kicked truly to quell the Borough’s charge
but as it turned out they hadn’t yet made their move
Will Calsher Dear withdrawn in the shadows of three-quarter-time and Trent Bianco out of the game on account of a knock
29 and 33 minute marks to set-up a grandstand finish
If Hawks fans were nervy they needn’t be.Maginness
Butler and Scaife combined to deliver the latter’s fifth after barely a minute of play in the fourth quarter
before Sam Frost was swung forward to devastating effect
‘Frosty’ kicked back-to-back goals and all of a sudden the gap was 31-points and there had been 15 minutes played.Mulady’s second gave his side a faint chance
but Declase’s second and Scaife’s sixth shut the door for good.Malachi White kicked a consolation late-on to bring a smile to Port Melbourne fans
only for Noah Mraz to kick his first VFL goal and confirm a 38-point Box Hill Hawks win
The Hawks are next in action this coming Saturday night
when the brown and gold will host Richmond in Frankston
The match has been rescheduled and moved to accommodate Channel 7’s ‘Match of the Day’ broadcast
Hawthorn will celebrate 100 years in the VFL/AFL this Sunday in a Centenary Match against Richmond at the MCG

by a stroke to claim his second adidas PGA Pro-Am Series title for 2024
Panopoulos has another five pro-ams on his schedule before he attempts to qualify for the $800,000 NSW Open at Murray Downs later this month and has the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia Qualifying School as a longer term target
Lynch’s round was the best of the morning field
while John birdied his final hole to grab a share of second
The winner’s scorecard featured five birdies
and one to finish at the par-5 seventh to claim the outright victory
His only dropped shots came at the par-3 11th and at the longest par-4 at Box Hill
Panopoulos: “I played solid all day after getting off to a good start on my first hole
I hadn’t played here before I was just focussing on keeping the ball in play and not pushing it too much
where I don’t get too aggressive and play the safer and smarter shots
“I had a look at the scoreboard with five or six to play
and realised I had a couple of par-5s in my last few holes and knew I might have some chances there
