That won't be the only retro nod to the past either, ahead of what is the most anticipated QClash on record. With the 'Carrara Koala' (as it was infamously known when Brisbane based itself out of Gold Coast's current headquarters) on their jumper, players will run through a Bears banner to the 'Dare to Beat the Bear' theme song. Keep an eye out for some cheerleaders as well – a staple of many games in the 1980s and 1990s – in the guard of honour. There might also be an appearance from a former blonde-haired full-forward that had a reputation for sky-scraping marks. (Hint: Known as 'The Wiz', he likes referring to himself in the third person). Eccentric champion Warwick Capper speak with Damian Barrett about fame, fortune and his biggest regret, in the second series of Centurions The Bears, who existed from 1987 to 1996, famously merged with the Fitzroy Lions to form the current iteration of the club ahead of the 1997 season. Adrian Fletcher, who had already played for Geelong and St Kilda, headed to Brisbane in 1993 at the same time the Bears moved from Carrara to the Gabba. "We started in poverty at the Gabba and ended up playing in finals," he recalled for AFL.com.au. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Brisbane Lions 🦁 (@brisbanelions) "We got to a preliminary final (in 1996) in that Bears strip. "We did a lot of hard yards. 'Wallsy' (Robert Walls) put us through the ringer and toughened us up a bit. "We had a good footy club by the end of it." Fletcher was not exaggerating about "hard yards". View this post on Instagram A post shared by Brisbane Lions 🦁 (@brisbanelions) They won just six games in their first year in 1987, seven in 1988 and eight in 1989. In fact, the Bears didn't win 10 games in a single season until 1995 when they stormed into the finals (more on that soon). By this stage, the nucleus of what would become the Lions' three-peat from 2001-2003 was in place. Michael Voss, Jason Akermanis, Justin Leppitsch, Nigel Lappin, Chris Scott, Marcus Ashcroft and Shaun Hart were becoming established. Fletcher played 86 games for the Bears and 21 for the Lions in 1997 before finishing his career at Fremantle. Aside from that preliminary final against North Melbourne in '96 – the last game ever played in a Bears guernsey under that club name – his fondest memory came from 12 months earlier against Hawthorn. Trailing by 45 points at the final change, Brisbane unleashed the biggest comeback in VFL/AFL history in the fourth quarter to snatch victory. "The Hawks went and stood in the shade at three-quarter time and 'Wallsy' wound us up and we kicked something ridiculous, maybe eight goals straight," he said. "We were nearly gone that year, but won a heap of games late and made finals." They would lose to Carlton in an elimination final that year, but storm to the prelim 12 months later in a year Voss would win his Brownlow Medal. With his son Jaspa now at the club, and one of Brisbane's best players to date in 2025, Fletcher said it was terrific to recognise the decade of history that can sometimes be lost in the shuffle. "I think things like this help the club respect where it came from," he said. "It was a lot of hard yards those early days. On the Gold Coast, then in Brisbane, a lot of people, guys like (CEO) Andrew Ireland, did a lot of hard work. "You've got to remember the hard times to appreciate the good ones." He asked for a series of short stories. Rather than an uninspiring list of rooms or a Pinterest board, Stuart wanted to understand how the family wished to live. “We received a delightful collection of anecdotes and short stories about love, raising children, eating dinner in the garden, drunken friends, sharing a daily bath and Sophie the dog,” Stuart says.  “A wonderful evocation of a house!” The rest of the brief was formed on the shared belief that urban homes should embrace life on their streets and surroundings, in all its sound and motion. “When you choose to live in a city, you live in it. You don’t cut yourself off from the city,” John says. “You open yourself up to it as much as you can.” Balmoral House backs onto a nature reserve and is close to a local school, both factors Vokes and Peters and the Birminghams embraced. “I can hear the bells going off, I can hear the kids in the playground,” John says. “When they have school discos, once or twice a year, you get the fantastic hits of the ’70s floating across the gully on the warm night air.” An open-air lounge and deck connect to the front garden, which features a set of “Pompeii walls”, as Stuart referred to them at the time, as they resemble well-maintained ruins. “When the kids were young, we would take his Pompeii walls and project movies and TV shows, rather than sitting inside with the doors closed and the air-con on,” John says. Passing neighbours would stop and watch whatever was playing, opening the community up to connection. “You got to talk to the people around you, which is not something that always happens in the modern city.” While movie nights were special, the writing room is a favourite space for John. It reminds him of a past sharehouse – in an old fibro shack on Mount Coot-Tha, with a writing room that had louvred glass walls and polished wood floors. For Balmoral House, John asked Stuart to recreate this effect. He says he faces a huge pane of glass that looks directly into the canopy of the subtropical rainforest at the back of the home. For Vokes and Peters, working on Balmoral House helped shape their approach to future design and architecture projects, with a focus on connection to surroundings. There’s something to be said for being connected – and open to – the world around you. Even at home. a sold-out Gabba on Sunday night Billed as the most anticipated match of their 28-game rivalry with the Lions playing their most complete game of 2025 in winning 9.12 (64) to 7.7 (49) It was their 12th win from the past 13 contests against the SUNS and moves them to a 7-1 record so far this year ahead of matches against North Melbourne and Melbourne in the next fortnight the premier put the game away with a powerful five-goals-to-one third quarter Gold Coast kicked the final three goals of the match but the scoreboard flattered the SUNS in the end The Lions overwhelmed their Little Brother in front of a record QClash crowd of 33,612 dominating the clearances (47-28) to provide great field position with 56 inside-50s to just 40 Hugh McCluggage (30 disposals and eight clearances) and Lachie Neale (25 and 10) dominated the midfield battle in slippery conditions Josh Dunkley (26) kept Matt Rowell to 16 disposals and just one clearance while SUNS skipper Noah Anderson (27) was down on his high standards With Sam Day (hamstring) injured in the first quarter and Logan Morris (calf) unable to play Charlie Cameron returned to form in the smaller forward line with three goals Cameron had not kicked a goal for the previous three matches but broke the drought with two in 60 seconds in the second term The first quarter had all the intensity you’d hope for from two top four teams Although Brisbane had the better of the stoppage battle and pumped the ball inside 50 regularly giving the home team little time or space for clean disposals Dashing winger Lachie Weller was subbed out of the match for the SUNS in the first quarter with a hamstring injury After Jarrod Berry kicked a goal on the quarter-time siren to give the Lions the lead they rattled on three quickly early in the second quarter to extend to a 22-point buffer evening things up around the contest on the back of a huge Touk Miller quarter Mac Andrew was magnificent in defeat for the SUNS but Damien afield with 34 disposals and nine clearances Both teams hamstrung in the opening termAfter 155 games in 14 seasons for Gold Coast this was the first time Sam Day would run out against the SUNS Day injured his hamstring just before the first change and was immediately subbed by Will McLachlan leaving the Lions one tall – and their back-up ruckman – short in the front half of the ground Gold Essendon's injury issues are starting to bite plus much Check out what we learned from round eight of the 2025 season Sarah Olle and Kane Cornes unpack the big issues from the round of footy the 28-year-old finished with 26 disposals and six clearances but it was his diligent shutdown job on Gold Coast terrier Matt Rowell at stoppages that was just as important ball-winning complement that glues the Lions midfield together Although coach Justin Longmuir is reluctant to admit it, Fremantle is too reliant on ball-magnets Caleb Serong and Andy Brayshaw to get going. On Friday evening when St Kilda came at the contest with all guns blazing the Fremantle pair were shut out of the game losing clearances by 28 and contested possessions by 48 from which they were forced to defend grimly for the duration of the game With the duo unable to get their hands on the footy and Hayden Young going down with a third hamstring injury in as many months Fremantle was dangerously exposed in the midfield and it's shown the footy world how to shut down the Dockers; stop them at the source Greater Western Sydney could not quite rein in Sydney after giving its heated rivals a five-goal head start on Sunday but the Giants should take heart from Finn Callaghan being the one to stand up and spark a fight back The 22-year-old partnered with on-ball bull Tom Green to lead the Giants' engine room that was outmuscled early and appeared to have a huge hole without the injured Josh Kelly and Stephen Coniglio Callaghan had 15 disposals just in the second term to drag the Giants back to within a goal and finished with 33 touches and six clearances in a powerful but typically stylish display The former No.3 pick has loomed as the future of the Giants midfield since inking a long-term deal but the time has come for Callaghan to take control now while he waits for experienced reinforcements to return With talls Sam Draper, Nick Bryan and Tom Edwards already out for the season and key midfielder Darcy Parish not yet sighted in 2025, Harrison Jones (ankle), Jordan Ridley (hamstring) and Jade Gresham (adductor) all went down on Thursday night Essendon has registered four wins this season by an average of 14 points; the biggest against Melbourne by 39 points with the other three by margins of two (West Coast) three (North Melbourne) and 12 (Port Adelaide) But the injury toll to key personnel in all parts of the ground is starting to mount While the 4-3 Bombers are hanging tough for now matches against the in-form Western Bulldogs and Brisbane in the next month will be massive tests the only side to be hit as hard by injury so far this season Tyler Brockman hasn't clicked as a forward yet at West Coast, but his second half against Melbourne on Saturday night showed he can contribute as a midfielder The Eagles have big issues in the centre and turned to their small forwards at stages for some fast feet in the engine room Brockman delivered and had an equal game-high five clearances after half-time attending eight centre bounces in the final quarter The Eagles are wrestling with how much positional change is useful versus how much it can be destabilising within games But they have midfielders who aren't performing at ground level and experimenting with Brockman both taught them something and helped on-field There's no doubting James Sicily's football ability or his leadership qualities, but his temperament can still be a problem. Suspensions seem to be a thing of the past, but the Hawthorn skipper remains capable of elevating a situation unnecessarily and did so against Richmond on Sunday when he dumped Maurice Rioli after winning a free kick The resulting melee saw the Hawks get a 50m penalty and an easy goal but it also set a fire under the Tigers at time when the Hawks had it all their own way Richmond does not currently have the ammunition to explode but plenty of better teams do and an uncalled-for firestarter could turn a big game Tim Taranto flies the flag for teammate Maurice Rioli jnr after being run down by the Hawks’ skipper prompting big fireworks on the half-back flank With Matt Crouch injured and No.4 draft pick Sid Draper dropped, plenty of eyes were on the Crows' midfield in Saturday's clash against Carlton And it was James Peatling and Josh Rachele who had an uptick in midfield responsibility who won centre clearances by 10 (and overall clearances by eight) in an impressive display through the middle mostly in the first half when used at centre bounces who attended his biggest percentage of centre bounces as a Crow had five clearances (the equal second most for the home side) The dynamic duo added to the flair of Izak Rankine and power of captain Jordan Dawson plus the evasiveness of Jake Soligo to give Adelaide what may be its ideal midfield mix The 90-point thrashing of Port Adelaide would have been a delight to watch if you were a Bulldogs supporter with Luke Beveridge labelling it his team's best win of the year But the redevelopment of Mars Stadium in Ballarat with half the stadium brown dirt and machinery meant a crowd of just 4,814 was able to attend Saturday's win was the Dogs' 10th from 14 appearances in Ballarat with Beveridge saying in his post-match press conference we're winning most often when we come here" Clubs often come unstuck when they sell home games to new regions but the Dogs have found a second home on Mars Gold Coast Academy’s Usher on her ACL injury rehab battles and best friend Havana Harris incredible misses and more in our look back on the April action of the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership season Three-time premiership coach Mick Malthouse gives host Bharat Sundaresan the rundown on how Australian football began and how it became such a significant part of Australian culture With a challenging month of away clashes ahead Fremantle needs to find a way to win on the road if it's to seriously contend in 2025 Damian Barrett and Matthew Lloyd with the latest news and opinions from Round 8 The next edition of AFL.com.au's The 25 will be published on Tuesday Check out the Rising Star for AFL’s Round 8 Will a hard tag from Jack Viney be the reason Harley Reid leaves the Eagles Vote now on your favourite marks from Round 8 of the Toyota AFL Premiership Season In the spirit of reconciliation the AFL acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land We pay our respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today The Brisbane Lions have named their final team to take on the Gold Coast SUNS in QClash 28 at the Gabba on Sunday night Jack Payne, Conor McKenna and Will McLachlan have all been included Payne returns after missing last week’s win over St Kilda with illness while McKenna and McLachlan have been given another opportunity at AFL level The Club has confirmed young duo Kai Lohmann (shoulder) and Logan Morris (calf tightness) will both miss the match through injury, while James Tunstill returns to VFL who was subbed out last week following a heavy collision against St Kilda was cleared following scans on Monday though has been given more time to recover Morris experienced calf tightness at training this week leading to the Lions taking no risks with the young forward Sunday night’s QClash 28 is scheduled for 7:20pm at the Gabba and will be broadcast live on Fox Footy and 7Mate Heading to the Gabba? to Dabble Note that odds and lines can fluctuate throughout the week The final game of Round 8 shapes as one of the most anticipated QClashes in years with both Brisbane and Gold Coast sitting inside the top four and a spot at the top of the ladder up for grabs history suggests this might follow a familiar script The Lions have absolutely dominated this rivalry in recent years winning 11 of the past 12 meetings between the two sides Gold Coast haven’t won at the Gabba in their last nine attempts and the Lions have shown time and again that they love turning up the heat at home Brisbane took care of business in both encounters and they’ll come into this one full of confidence that they can keep that trend rolling the Suns aren’t the easybeats they used to be They’ve started 2025 in impressive fashion and they’ll be desperate to not only break their Gabba hoodoo but to make a statement that they’re a genuine top-four side beating Brisbane at home is a challenge that’s proven too big for many in recent years The Lions haven’t been flawless this season but they’ve done enough to sit comfortably near the top of the ladder and they rarely let games like this slip — especially in front of a home crowd While Gold Coast will no doubt bring intensity and try to rattle the Lions early and they know how to wrestle back momentum when it matters most physical clash with a finals-like atmosphere The Suns will push hard and might even lead at stages it feels like another QClash where the Lions do enough to pull away late and stamp their place at the top of the ladder Throughout the keep Suns at arm's length againDBy Dean Bilton Charlie Cameron has burst to life as the Brisbane Lions shot to the top of the AFL ladder and put Gold Coast in their place in a lopsided QClash sitting third with ambition to prove their mettle against the reigning premiers in driving rain and after a hard-fought first half the Lions' midfield dominated the clearances and their small forwards profited in a 9.12 (66) to 7.7 (49) Sunday night Gabba win Three late goals flattered the Suns and helped them narrowly avoid their lowest score in 28 meetings as a QClash record crowd of 33,612 gathered to watch the Lions' 12th win from these teams' past 13 meetings Will Ashcroft and Hugh McCluggage had 27 of the Lions' 47 clearances Will Ashcroft won the medal for best afield in a QClash Josh Dunkley kept Matt Rowell quiet to complete the Lions' midfield masterclass Cameron (three goals) hadn't kicked a goal in three games but had two in as many minutes in the second term thanks to some quick footwork and a handy grubber off the deck He missed two snaps he would usually swallow up but marked strongly and moved well to look back to his threatening best after a quiet start to the season The margin was just 11 points at halftime and the Suns looked ripe to push the Lions after halting the hosts' momentum and getting forward themselves But they wasted opportunities with long bombs into the Lions' defensive zone who repelled and allowed Cameron and Callum Ah Chee (three goals) to prosper A 12-clearance difference in the third term was the biggest for the Suns since 2019 and led to a five-goals-to-one quarter that ended the fight wearing their inaugural 1987 Brisbane Bears guernsey in a retro throwback jumped to first after Collingwood's loss to Geelong on Saturday few minutes chipping the ball around among themselves winding down the clock and winding up the crowd But when we get to the end of the season nobody will care how it happened The Lions were comfortably the better team more mature and composed when the game was there to be won Crucially the Brisbane midfield was dominant and without the engine room firing the Suns had no platform for Suncorp Stadium may have been left out of the Queensland government’s Olympics infrastructure plan announced in March But the venue is a source of pride for the city Mander described it on Thursday as “the best rugby league stadium in the world” and added “we want to make sure that it maintains that standard” Few places exude rugby league culture like the strip of asphalt leading down to Lang Park There is a reason the NRL bought a hotel halfway up the road The pubs and restaurants within earshot of the main stadium act as Magic Round’s beating heart Looking out over the city’s famous brown snake in the hours before Women’s State of Origin as a tyre – complete with rim – bobs by one is left to wonder whether the grass may be greener elsewhere how much another state might pay for the privilege of putting up tens of thousands of men in coloured polyester Match: Brisbane vs Gold Coast Suns Date: Sunday 2025Start Time: 7:20pm (AEST)Stadium: Gabba This QClash should be a ripper as we end Sunday night with a bang at the Gabba with the Lions winning 20 of the 27 clashes so far But this is the first time we've had a QClash with Brisbane in second and Gold Coast third on the ladder the two teams having lost one and two games respectively so far this season The Lions were well beaten by Collingwood in the Easter Thursday game a short turnaround and a very good Collingwood shutdown effort it may just have been the loss the reigning premiers needed as they bounced back with a comprehensive 45-point win over St Kilda last week fired up by Lachie Neale's three goals and 31 disposals In that clash it was Brisbane's midfield doing some serious damage as Neale was joined by his midfield mates Will Ashcroft (35 possessions) and Josh Dunkley (24 possessions while Dayne Zorko (34) and Darcy Wilmot (30) also did their thing had a more mixed performance in many ways despite the 38 point margin over Sydney The Suns were coming off an 11-point loss to Richmond at Marvel and looked up against it when Sydney led by 29 with three minutes to go before half-time But two goals in a minute to Jed Walter turned the tide big time as Gold Coast piled on 12 unanswered majors to show a new-found maturity the 38-point final margin flattered Sydney as Nick Blakey scored three late junk time goals for the Swans their forward line was doing plenty of damage with Ben King nailing five goals Bailey Humphry scoring four opportunistic ones and Walter booting three for the day as Gold Coast showed some grit to fight back from a loss and adversity during the game it was defender John Noble picking up the most touches with 30 although his stats are padded by kick ins at times while most of their midfield of Touk Miller Noah Anderson and Matt Rowell – who was held to just 16 touches – didn't have huge days they'll need to be at their best to take on Brisbane's on-ball division which is humming along quite nicely so far this season we think they'll have too much in the tank for Gold Coast this time but it promises to be a superb contest and possibly the round's best match despite the epic Collingwood v Geelong clash on Saturday night Look for more possessions from Noble and maybe a big game from Charlie Cameron as he hasn't quite fired so far in 2025 and is due a big one Brisbane have won four of their last five clashes with Gold Coast and hold a commanding 20 wins overall from 27 QClash matches 2025 – 12:25pm) for Lions vs Suns on Sunday across multiple bookmakers Brisbane vs Gold Coast Suns – AFL Round 8 | 2025 Check out our Brisbane vs Gold Coast prediction now See all the Lions vs Suns odds for the AFL Round 8 match at the Gabba Match: Brisbane vs Gold Coast Suns Date: Sunday A NOTE ABOUT RELEVANT ADVERTISING: We collect information about the content (including ads) you use across this site and use it to make both advertising and content more relevant to you on our network and other sites. moments for me that have shaped who I am and my politics,” he said “My experiences of working poverty-wage jobs “Both impacted me deeply and forever changed how I saw the world.” “I spent my teenage years knowing I was gay and doing everything in my power to hide it “I told myself I would force myself to get married to a woman “I was lucky enough to have a very supportive family to come out to new tab) Leave empty if the image is purely decorative Josh Dunkley and Will Ashcroft powered a midfield mauling and Charlie Cameron added the sizzle up front as a vintage Brisbane performance put the Suns in retrograde to take a 9.12 (66) to 7.7 (49) win in the first Q Clash of 2025 The trio led the way in what was a fairly uninspiring contest who sat on Suns stud Matt Rowell all night while also providing plenty for the Gabba crowd to cheer about The veteran midfielder was prolific in keeping his direct opponent to a quiet 16 disposals and a measly lone clearance while compiling 26 disposals and six tackles himself Ashcroft would go on to win the best afield medal named after his very own father as he skated around the wet ground collecting possessions at will to finish with 34 disposals and nine clearances Charlie Cameron nailed three goals in a return to form and could have had a couple more Most of the damage was done in the third term as the Lions nailed five goals through Callum Ah Chee (who bagged three of his own the reigning premiers were largely the better side across most of the four quarters as the Suns fell short in a litmus test The visitors looked competitive early on when David Swallow booted the first goal while Joel Jeffrey and Mac Andrew won their share of contests in defence Brisbane was unable to kick a goal until after the quarter time siren when a Bailey Humphrey brain fade allowed Jarrod Berry to convert and perhaps in a tribute to our federal politicians on election weekend Humphrey decided to throw some mud (unlike our politicians not figurative) resulting in a 50m penalty that waltzed Jarrod Berry to the goal line dominating clearance contests across the entire game winning the final count 47-28 in a smashing Cameron set the crowd alight early in the second term when he mesmerised Will Powell and Touk Miller to snap a fantastic goal He would follow the feat with another one 90 seconds later alleviating some of the pressure that had been building on the veteran small forward following a form slump The Suns continued to threaten to put together passages of play but often fell short when entering forward 50m Young forward Jed Walter broke through eventually but with star forward Ben King not touching the ball in the first half It was a different looking Suns who came out of half time Those threatening passages went up in smoke as the Lions continually punished the Suns for either not being tough Will Ashcroft was joined in racking up the stats by brother Levi who tallied 29 on the night to go with seven marks and three clearances they continued to power the champs past their little brothers and the Suns booting the final three goals on the night did little to affect the result thoroughly outclassing a fairly disappointing Gold Coast The Lions will go into a Round 9 match with North feeling full of confidence next week while the Gold Coast will host the Bulldogs in an important game for both sides Here are some of the things that caught my four eyes: Other coaches wish they had Josh Dunkley sooooo badly what a performance from this impeccable footballer he somehow kept Matt Rowell to a single clearance that’s like keeping Cheech and Chong to one puff Dunkley constantly put body pressure on Rowell doing whatever he could to make sure the number one draft pick never got a clean run at the footy It’s crazy to say a bloke with 26 touches sacrificed his own game The best thing about watching Dunkley is his no-nonsense approach to footy He is ready to take on whatever job his coach gives him Other coaches must watch on with envy when the Lions play and Chris Fagan must gush with appreciation for his work The Lions are living the absolute dream through the Ashcroft boys Will and Levi combined for 63 disposals and 13 marks They love to run around the ground touching the footy as much as they can and the Gold Coast players had no problem letting them do exactly that tonight I thought we might see a tag applied to Will at half time but Dimma made little change to his midfield plan and the Ashcroft train kept on chugging The brothers were bested by the Daicos lads a few weeks ago but I reckon they’ll win their share of those clashes over the coming seasons Jaspa Fletcher is pretty bloody handy as well Wet weather helped minimise the Lions’ weakness and I will ensure it does not happen again moving forward like every good politician (another election weekend reference there for ya) I thought missing Logan Morris would seriously hurt the Lions in this game I like the way the Suns’ backs stacked up against the Brisbane forwards The wet weather essentially made an absent key forward a non-factor and even the loss of Sam Day in the first term didn’t really affect the game the lack of tall forwards allowed space for Ah Chee and Cameron to combine for six goals I think he was among the Suns’ best… I think He does things defensively that make me nod and say “nice” when he affects the contest and he had his share of contest wins in this game But he also has at least one brainfart per match It came when he took a mark and played on straight away into the arms of Eric Hipwood who was on his hammer but he was lucky to avoid giving away a 50m penalty when he overstepped the mark by five metres just to go remonstrate He’s lucky the umpire was oblivious to it tonight Mac is making a habit of some pretty stupid shit and I’ve typed the word “Ashcroft” out way too much for my liking Unfortunately there were a few cyclonic style rainbursts over South Brisbane which really dampened the ground for this game. Ben King just couldn’t get into it. I still rate Gold Coast, and may these two be re-playing this in September. Thanks for the review – short, concise, fun to read.
