Almost two-thirds of the 599 publicly funded enrolments at NRT's Broome campus are by students training in fee-free and low-fee courses, demonstrating the importance of making training accessible to all Western Australians. NRT's Broome campus offers a variety of fee-free and low-fee courses in priority industries such as building and construction, the care sector, and hospitality and tourism, to meet local skill demands. In the first term of 2025, fee-free and low-fee courses in the health, education and care industry have been popular with students, with more than 110 publicly funded enrolments in courses including School Based Education Support, Early Childhood Education and Care, Community Services and Youth Work. A further 53 publicly funded enrolments have been recorded in Maritime Operations courses and skill sets, helping to build a skilled workforce for Broome's local maritime industry. There have been more than 55 publicly funded enrolments in building and construction qualifications with students training in Carpentry, Civil Construction Plant Operations and Construction Pathways. Students training in civil construction at NRT's Kimberley campuses are also benefiting from the State Government's $810,000 investment in new equipment through the Modern Equipment Program, ensuring they are training with the latest industry-standard equipment that reflects what they will encounter on the job. The new equipment includes a tip truck and trailer, tandem roller, loader, an excavator, and a skid-steer. The State Government will invest an additional $33.8 million over the next four years to expand the Modern Equipment Program to deliver new equipment for electrical, building and construction, health, driver training, automation and manufacturing courses. In addition to the new equipment, NRT's Broome campus has also received an infrastructure upgrade as part of the Cook Government's record $250 million investment in WA TAFE colleges. The Broome campus now boasts state-of-the-art hospitality, hair and beauty and student services facilities, which were opened in June 2023. "WA's TAFE colleges are the heart of our State's vocational training system and they play a crucial role in skilling the workforce for the communities they serve. "The State Government is committed to ensuring all Western Australians - regardless of where they live - can access world-class training that gives them the skills needed to thrive in the State's workforce. "At a time when every dollar counts, I'm proud that my government can help reduce the barrier to training, by offering fee-free and low-fee courses. "It's pleasing to see that two-thirds of publicly funded enrolments at the Broome campus are in fee-free and low-fee training courses. "Through funding fee-free and low-fee training courses and making them available throughout WA - including in regional communities such as Broome - my government is helping Western Australians to get the skills they need to be able to participate and get ahead in the workforce." As stated by Skills and TAFE Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson: "North Regional TAFE's modern Broome campus is the largest training facility in the Kimberley and is well-positioned to provide high-quality training so locals can skill, upskill and reskill. "The State Government is committed to investing in the future capability of WA's TAFE colleges to ensure they provide high-quality, industry-relevant training to Western Australians, setting them up for success in the workforce. "Thanks to the State Government's investment in our TAFE colleges, North Regional TAFE's Broome campus now has state-of-the-art hospitality, hair and beauty, and student services facilities which will serve the Kimberley community for many years to come. "Through funding from the Modern Equipment Program, civil construction students in the Kimberley are also benefiting from training on the latest industry-standard equipment which they'll come across in the workplace. "The State Government is committed to investing in the future capability of WA's TAFE colleges to ensure they provide high-quality, industry-relevant training to Western Australians, setting them up for success in the workforce." "It's great to see so many people taking advantage of free and low-fee training opportunities at North Regional TAFE so they can get the skills they need to land quality jobs. The court was told Green went to the popular Broome tourist spot Gantheaume Point on September 16, 2023 and attacked and sexually assaulted a young woman. Green attacked two women in the tourist town of Broome in less than four hours.  (ABC Kimberley: Vanessa Mills) Hours later another woman who had been sleeping in her campervan van at Town Beach car park, woke to find Green inside her vehicle. She noticed her bag and other personal items were missing and she told Green to get out of the van before fleeing. Green chased and sexually assaulted her on the grassy area of Town Beach. Both women, who were not known to each other and travelling around Australia separately, reported the attacks to police immediately. They were examined at Broome Hospital and both were found to have sustained multiple injuries including bruising and lacerations. The evidence against Green included his DNA on both victims, CCTV footage and stolen items found at his property on the day of his arrest. Judge MacLean described the attacks as degrading, and terrifying for both young women. In considering an appropriate term of imprisonment, Judge MacLean took into account Green's previous offending, including acts of violence against other women. "There is a need to protect the community from your violent offending," Judge MacLean said. "You were only released from prison shortly before these offences. "You appeared to be celebrating." The court was told Green’s lack of emotional control and self-control combined with a week of binge drinking, cannabis use and impaired background affected his functioning.  But Judge MacLean said he though Green did understand the seriousness of what he was doing and even though he understood it, he continued.  “You decided to offend against them and you decided to use force to sexually offended against them.” Judge MacLean considered the indication of guilty pleas at the earliest opportunity, and said Green showed some remorse and had expressed shame and regret while in custody. The first attack happened at popular Broome tourist spot Gantheaume Point.  (ABC Kimberley: Matt Bamford) Following the incident in 2023, Detective Senior Sergeant Brian Beck said the incidents were worrying. "These incidents are extremely concerning to police, and I have no doubt have caused a great deal of distress to not only the victims but also to the local community," he said. Green was sentenced to 16-and-a-half years in jail and will have to serve a minimum of 14-and-a-half years before he can be eligible for parole. He will also be subject to two lifetime restraining orders against both victims. .prefix__st0{fill:#333}AccessAccount Roebuck Bay and the West Kimberley coastline here’s what you can see and do during the “festival of the pearl” celebrating the region’s produce and multiculturalism Words by · Updated on 05 May 2025· Published on 20 Mar 2025 The vibrant regional town on Yawuru country some 2000 kilometres north of Perth/Boorloo beckons adventurers with its Asian heritage epic stargazing and rich First Nations history With a name meaning “Festival of the Pearl” Shinju Matsuri celebrates the area’s significant pearling history It kicks off in late August – during the dry season – when you’ll also experience the region’s famous wildflowers Here’s how to get the most out of a trip to Broome for the festival Stake out your spot (either saddleback or shore-bound) get comfy and watch the magnificent show over some of the world’s longest tides The Broome Courthouse Markets are a hive of life on Saturdays Locals and travellers flock here for the dozens of food stalls and trucks serving tucker like mango smoothies and chicken adobo and siomai (steamed pork dumplings that riff on Chinese siu mai) at Matt’s Authentic Filipino Cuisine You’ll also find up to 100 stallholders selling pottery Matso’s is another fine spot to cap off a day of exploring Broome and surrounds The laid-back brewery sits in an early-1900s building Come and cool down with a pint of ginger beer (always with a zesty wedge of lime) fruity beer or a classic ale across from views of the turquoise ocean and lush green mangroves order small plates like Exmouth prawns and yakitori chicken wings alongside bigger options such as braised lamb shank Much of life in Broome revolves around the tides and it’s no different at this historic beach just 10 minutes’ drive from the town centre Head here at low tide to spot dinosaur footprints that date back more than 125 million years This is a beautiful spot to take in the bold pindan red cliffs beside the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean that surround much of Broome Once you’re hooked on a WA sunset, you’ll want to see it from a few different angles. As Broome sat on the floor of State Farm Arena and clutched his elbow In an attempt to block a shot, Broome landed awkwardly on his left leg and then right elbow. When he walked to the locker room during the final 10 minutes of the Elite Eight matchup against Michigan State the Auburn-heavy crowd stopped cheering -- the uncertainty had turned excitement over the Tigers' 10-point lead into anxiousness over the status of the team's star Broome sprinted back onto the court as the thousands of fans roared it's a sigh of relief because we felt like we could still win the game without him we'd have our hands full in San Antonio [without him]," said assistant coach Steven Pearl As Broome made his way to the locker room before returning, Chaney Johnson said Broome told his teammates to "finish the game for me" -- a testament to the culture Broome has helped instill Because not only is he the star of the team as the leader of a roster featuring three starters attending their second schools The change that comes with integrating transfers has been a challenge for a lot of programs but Broome and his teammates are proof of what can happen when things jell "When I got here, [Pearl] brought me in because he thought I was a good person," Broome said. "When he brought in more transfers like [Chad Baker-Mazara], [Denver Jones] and [Johnson] I think when you're able to build a team how you want it you can organize it by getting good guys in a good system." spending most of the season as America's No 1 team before taking a 1-3 stumble heading into the NCAA tournament Broome's magnificence on the court has been a key component in the Tigers' Final Four run; he has also matured into a relatable leader along the way His teammates say Broome keeps the vibes light and brings everyone together. One of his best friends on the team is 19-year-old freshman Tahaad Pettiford And he has developed close relationships with others "Johni is a playful, goofy guy," Miles Kelly said and we like to joke and have fun off the court." Kelly and Broome are roommates when the team travels -- and the two banter about who is the cleanest "I don't like to have my space all dirty and stuff like that He'll just come in and throw stuff on the ground." "[Kelly] is the type to drink a water bottle and put it on my side," Broome countered "He walks in and puts it on the dresser right there so we always go back and forth about who is being dirty." Miles Kelly and Johni Broome room together when Auburn is on the road. Andy Lyons/Getty ImagesThat carefree approach helped Auburn weather the pressure of chasing a national title and competing for the SEC regular-season championship in the same year the conference set a record for the most NCAA tournament bids (14) in college basketball history It's a lighthearted atmosphere Pearl has encouraged -- practices are full of trash talk and laughter Broome can change the tone in a split second His teammates know that once his alter ego arrives 'You need to turn on that alter ego: JB4,'" Baker-Mazara said 14-rebound effort in Sunday's win over Michigan State was his 20th double-double of the season Flagg -- the projected top pick in this summer's NBA draft -- has a series of monster games and "SportsCenter" highlights that Broome can't match But the Auburn star also produced some of the year's most dominant efforts by any player it's a different level of seriousness that comes with it schools such as Auburn could crash the party with a national championship That's why Broome's push to reach the pinnacle of the sport is significant That ambition could cause a headache for Florida "I think we're all aware [of] how lethal [Broome] is on the block and getting to where he wants to get to and drawing fouls," Michigan coach Dusty May said before the Wolverines' loss to the Tigers in the Sweet 16 so he's a challenge on a number of levels." Added Tom Izzo following Michigan State's loss to Auburn in the Elite Eight: "We did most of the things we wanted to do except guard Broome a little bit better It wasn't the points he scored that got us We're used to giving up points and making sure they don't get 3s They're a pretty good 3-point shooting team That's why he's a player of the year candidate Broome is the face of a new wave of programs that might lack the traditions of college basketball's pillar programs but know how to assemble a team in this new climate Pearl's dreams have required cash -- it's a minimum $1 million donation to even be considered for season tickets -- and the Tigers' supporters have been willing to write those checks But the team's success goes against the historical grain Auburn might set the blueprint for future title contenders in this new era As Broome stood on the court in Atlanta and celebrated the second Elite Eight victory in school history with the young men he calls his brothers "Celebration" by Kool & the Gang blasted through the speakers of State Farm Arena he took it all in and wondered how he might be remembered when all of this is over "I hope I go down as one of the best," he said Broome returned to Sunday's game after being injured midway through the second half but spent this week in rehab, preparing for his team's rematch against Florida On Thursday he had a sleeve on his right elbow as he spoke with reporters but he said he's not concerned about his availability against the Gators who beat the Tigers 90-81 on Auburn's home floor on Feb "I did a lot with my elbow [this week]," Broome said on Thursday in San Antonio who returned to practice Thursday for the first time since he suffered the injury will make a difference against any opponent I'm glad he feels that way [about being 100 percent] Today was the first day he moved and practiced so I was glad to see him," Pearl said Thursday and the one thing Johni Broome showed in this NCAA tournament is that there was another level Everybody keeps watching him and wondering 'When is he going to fizzle When is he going to not show up?' And he just and Florida's bigs are a little bigger and a little bit more athletic than Michigan State's or Michigan's bigs but he was the MVP of the South Region and we rode him hard and we're going to ride him hard again on Saturday." Broome suffered the injury as he tried to block Michigan State forward Frankie Fidler's shot in Auburn's 70-64 win Broome briefly left the court to see trainers in the locker room but returned after the team's medical staff said he had not suffered any major damage That's good news for a team that hopes the SEC Player of the Year will be at full strength Saturday "He's been doing a great job of trying to get it better and staying in the training room," Auburn standout Miles Kelly said Thursday. "But he's definitely going to be ready for Saturday." It was a stark difference from the first half. Broome had 12 points at halftime and Florida did a poor job moving him from his desired spots. The Auburn staff was optimistic at halftime about how sharp he looked. "That was about as much pop and pace that he's played with in a long time," Auburn assistant coach Steven Pearl said. "And he showed why he's the best, if not one of the best players in all college basketball." Pearl then pointed out that a different level of energy is required to handle the waves of Florida big men. Florida assistant John Andrzejek credited Hartman for a fiery halftime speech that included challenging Chinyelu, whom Broome took advantage of in the first half. Andrzejek scouted Florida, and part of that included a deep analysis of the risk-reward of not doubling Broome. Because the Gators didn't, Broome spent parts of the first half methodically pounding the ball into the paint. None of his shots were from more than eight feet. The Gators needed to make sure he couldn't establish himself. And Andrzejek stressed that the Gators force Broome to shoot over his left shoulder. Hartman's halftime motivational speech to the Gators' big men lasted about three minutes, was pockmarked with some colorful language and ended with a simple theme -- it's OK to lose, but it's not OK to get pushed around. It was much more emotional than technical. Chinyelu recalled: "He said, 'We're playing soft right now. We're not playing like ourselves.'" Broome took a hard fall against Michigan State on Sunday and didn't practice this week until Thursday because of an injured elbow. Broome's right elbow was padded and then wrapped in a sleeve that stretched from his right bicep to his wrist. "Our medical staff did an unbelievable job this week of just making sure that he was as comfortable as he possibly could," Pearl said. "Every time Florida had a chance, they were hitting that [elbow], and that's part of the game. And Johni, to his credit, played through that physicality, played through that contact and was still able to have a really effective game." And when Broome's space collapsed and his energy zapped, Auburn's chances went with him. The Tigers had 12 second-half turnovers -- the Florida coaching staff counted 20 second-half deflections -- and Auburn had just eight second-half paint points after 26 in the first half. The second-half performance left a pall over the Auburn locker room as Broome whispered answers to the final questions he received after the loss. "Obviously, I left my impact on what I've done here," he said. "I [thank] God for allowing me to come here and be able to make an impact." On Saturday night, he couldn't give them enough.
