but the Bundy rum advertising campaign in the mid-1990s turned its yellow label and polar bear into an Aussie icon and made the town of Bundaberg a bucket-list visit
If it’s the Bundy bear you’re interested in, then you need to head to Bundaberg Rum Distillery located in the town’s industrial area
even more commercial than its softer counterpart
but you can purchase a shot of its numerous rum varieties and sit at a table to drink it
Macadamias are the hardest nut to crack and there’s a definite knack to breaking the shell without destroying the nut inside
is sampling the product and leaving without a few bags of (reasonably priced) macadamias
The menu is approachable but offers good variety
including all-day breakfast and bigger lunch items
The coffee is strong and delicious and a large one comes in a bowl-sized cup with rounded edges
Also worth checking out are its sister cafés the Garden Mill and the Beach Mill
In strawberry season (June to October) visitors can pick a punnet of fresh produce
and between harvest times Tinaberries sells strawberry and mango ice cream and cereal (it also has macadamia trees)
The Australian Sugar Cane Railway is a real steam engine – or possibly diesel locomotive
depending on which day you visit – that traces the perimeter of the gardens and
with a family ticket just $15 for a 15-minute ride
it’s a wonderful way to see the gardens should rain or sweltering heat prohibit walking
If you’re feeling peckish afterwards, the 1928 café is on site
but be advised – it has no air conditioning
Where Moneys Creek flows into Kellys Beach
it creates an inviting lagoon perfect for families
while Elliot Heads and Mays Island have the pale sands and turquoise waters synonymous with this part of the world
If there’s anything you didn’t know about coral before the tour
you’ll know it afterwards – a few minutes shaved off the talk and donated to admiring the coral wouldn’t go amiss – but it’s an opportune chance to see the dazzling colours of these amazing lifeforms at a proximity not even diving or snorkelling permits
You’ll be allocated a group as you embark – Turtles
Dolphins or Clownfish – and that determines the order of the day’s activities
If you’re at all prone to seasickness
Travacalm before the 2.5-hour trek out to the reef is recommended
For about six months the island is home to white-capped noddy terns
which make an annual pilgrimage from Japan to nest in the Pisonia trees
This is the sort of symbiosis in which nature seems to specialise – the trees provide nesting sites and the birds’ poo provides nutrients (the island’s ‘soil’ is largely composed of crushed coral and all rainwater and nutrients seep through to the sea below)
so co-operative – but the trees aren’t satisfied with bird scat
During the spring they produce extremely sticky flowers which litter the forest floor
and if a bird steps on one there’s a good chance it will get stuck
and start to decompose – providing more nutrients for the tree’s hungry roots
is its 440,000-litre turtle-shaped saltwater pool
means that once you’re in the pool you don’t want to get out
Two Bundaberg businesses have been selected as part of CommBank’s Matildas on Loan national advertising campaign
celebrating small businesses across Australia
Each of the 50 competition winners will receive an advertisement for their business alongside the CommBank Matildas
which will be distributed by the Commonwealth Bank via billboards
radio and CommBank Branches as part of a national advertising campaign
Each winner will receive a tailored campaign to promote their business within their respective communities
Managing Director at Macadamias Australia Janelle Gerry said the collaboration was well suited to their recent operational expansion
“As a family owned and operated business, we know the importance of teamwork, a positive attitude and maintaining a high standard – all qualities which are embodied by the CommBank Matildas,” Janelle said
“This year we have expanded our operations to offer an extended range of premium delicious macadamia retail products
“This collaboration with CommBank is perfect for us to establish credibility as we enter a new and exciting phase of growth
both in Australia and Internationally.”
Founder and Director of Smile Care Hub Kym Shires said the support of the CommBank Matildas was a fantastic opportunity for their young business to connect with more families
“For a business still in its infancy
the resilience and teamwork of the CommBank Matildas embodies the spirit I hope to bring forth as a new business owner,” Kym said
“This opportunity backs our mission of making early dental care fun and accessible for young children
while highlighting the importance of building strong oral health habits from an early age
“I’m excited for the future as Smile Care Hub continues to grow and provide invaluable services to families throughout our community.”
The announcement of 50 businesses selected as part of the national CommBank advertising campaign comes as new research shows nearly 90% of Australian small to medium enterprises (SMEs) expect to continue to face challenges in 2025
69% of Queensland-based SMEs said they felt optimistic about the next 12 months
CommBank’s General Manager of Small Business Banking for Queensland David Coote said it showed the resilience of Australian small businesses which remained brave in the face of continued economic uncertainty
“It’s been incredible to see the overwhelming response from thousands of Aussie small businesses who entered the competition,” David said
“We are thrilled to be able to support Macadamias Australia and Smile Care Hub in this way and I hope this campaign will create a powerful impact for them
and an unforgettable moment in their history.”
CommBank Matildas midfielder Kyra Cooney-Cross and goalkeeper Chloe Lincoln said there were many similarities between playing in a sporting team and owning a small business
“You have to show up every day and we’re both under quite a lot of pressure,” Kyra said
“Slow and steady wins the race and that goes for both – it takes a lot of hard work
and it’ll take time as well,” Chloe added
“Making sure that you have that vision
“Setbacks will come but it’s how you can overcome it – little steps each day.”

Bundaberg station flythrough concept design
Overlay vision of Bundaberg community engagement
Queensland Rail has released exciting new concept designs showing what the multi-million-dollar upgrades to Bundaberg railway station could look like
with the local community invited to provide feedback
The designs were informed by initial community consultation and feature upgraded customer facilities including airconditioned customer lounges with improved seating and toilet facilities
Accessibility improvements will likely include the installation of tactile ground indicators
variable desk height at the luggage check in desks and new accessible toilets
Upgrades to stations car parking will also likely be delivered along with a drop-off zone that integrates with other public transport providers
Customers will have a number of avenues to provide feedback on the designs
including an online survey through a QR code available at stations
face-to-face-engagement at the stations and in local retail outlets
Quotes attributable to the Minister for Transport and Main Roads
“Bundaberg railway station is a key regional travel hub that saw more than 77,400 customers move through the station last financial year
“Our regional train stations are hubs for our communities
so it’s exciting to view these latest designs that look set to transform Bundaberg station into a world-class facility
“We’re upgrading rail infrastructure right across our state
ensuring our network provides the best facilities for passengers.”
Quotes attributable to Queensland Rail CEO Kat Stapleton:
“We invite all of our customers to provide their feedback and we can’t wait to hear what you think about this exciting station upgrade
“Queensland Rail is all about connecting communities and Bundaberg station is essential in doing that – whether you’re using it to get to and from work
medical appointments or the trip of a lifetime
“Our vision is to deliver world-class rail services for our customers and this station upgrade will enable us to do that.”

Water meter reading contractors have begun reading meters throughout the region.
These water consumption charges will be billed on rate notice period ending 31 December 2025
to be delivered late July/early August 2025
The proposed water meter reading schedule is as follows:
Council will endeavour to advise ratepayers in writing if their water consumption is considerably higher than normal
as that may indicate a water leak on their property.
However, Council encourages ratepayers to monitor their water usage, shown on their water meters, to detect a leak as soon as possible, which will save water and reduce their water charges. Details on how to read your water meter and other useful water monitoring information are available on Council’s website at bundaberg.qld.gov.au or from any Council Service Centre
Should ratepayers experience a water leak they may be eligible for relief from the resulting higher than normal water charges.
A copy of Council’s Water Leak Relief Policy is available on Council’s website or from any Council Service Centre
It is a requirement of our water meter reading contractors that soil or other material that is removed from the meter box to take a reading is returned to the meter box.
This prevents drains from being blocked or ratepayer lawns being damaged by anything removed from the meter box
For the safety of Council’s water meter reading contractors
please ensure your animals are enclosed within your property
All water meter reading contractors carry official identification and wear uniforms including a long sleeve blue shirt with “Meter Reader” on the back
For any enquiries regarding water charges or rates contact Bundaberg Regional Council by calling 1300 883 699 or emailing ceo@bundaberg.qld.gov.au

promising another uplifting community choir experience for all
Hosted by Bridges Health & Community Care and led by well-known local musician and choir leader Christie Jacobsen
this year’s Big Sing will take place on Tuesday 4 March from 7 to 9 pm at the Shalom Performing Arts Precinct and is open to anyone aged 16 and over
“You don’t need any level of singing experience to join in a community event like this,” said Christie
“You don’t need to be able to read music
“We will be learning part harmonies to a very well-known song and then coming together at the end to sing as one
uplifting experience and a tonne of fun.”
The Bundaberg event for 2024 was rescheduled to this new date after its cancellation due to the passing of Christie’s daughter Isla
with the feature song being “Lanterns” by Birds of Tokyo
an anthem of resilience and self-determination
paired with Isla’s and Christie’s shared love for the band
“there was no doubt but to embody the spirit of the song and bring the Big Sing back in 2025,” said Christie
The band has endorsed the use of its song to promote positive mental health
aligning perfectly with the event’s focus on wellbeing and connection
Bridges CEO Sharon Sarah explained why the mental health service organisation decided to host The Big Sing event
“Our organisation sees participation in arts and culture as essential to wellbeing,” said Bridges CEO Sharon Sarah
“We want to provide opportunities for people to engage proactively in their mental health
“The sense of community and connection that happens at The Big Sing is truly inspiring.”
Bridges is delivering this event as part of its commitment to creative wellbeing initiatives
which include transforming the former Bundaberg Fire Station into Precinct 58
“The Big Sing is an event for everyone,” Sharon said
“We’ve had people turn up saying they were dragged along by a friend or partner
only to end the night telling us how much they loved it
“The energy in the room is incredible.”
Tickets for the event are $10 and available online through Humanitix
Limited-edition T-shirts will also be available for $30 to help support Bridges’ creative wellbeing initiatives like the Big Sing

There will be plenty of information available when the RDE – Regional Disability Expo
This event is a lifeline for people living with disabilities in regional areas
and their dedicated caregivers who often face challenges in accessing resources and support services available in larger cities
The main issue here is a lack of awareness about local services
leaving these individuals with no choice but to travel long distances to metropolitan areas
But did you know that there are more resources available than many realise
Event organiser Sharon Fulwood believes it is just a matter of knowing where to find them
“We have an informative day planned,” she said
“The expo will feature a wide array of services and suppliers catering to the disability and aged care sectors
NDIS services and health services for individuals of all ages.”
Let’s Talk Events (LTE) is a specialised event management company dedicated to organising events like this one to bring people together
eliminate barriers and provide essential services
products and support options to individuals with disabilities
“Don’t miss this opportunity to discover the wealth of resources available to you and your loved ones,” Sharon said
“Join us at the RDE – Regional Disability Expo with Bonus Seniors Expo 28 March at the PCYC
“We look forward to seeing you there!”

A variety of essential work and projects were underway in January including road and footpath repairs as well as the completion of the Bundaberg Recreational Precinct shelters
Below is a summary of the key activities completed by Bundaberg Regional Council

business and government representatives came together in late 2024 to brainstorm ideas to help regional schools better prepare students for employment
The Bundaberg Youth Roundtable aimed to determine the skills most desired by employers and identify future workforce needs
to ensure the vocational learning curriculum was meeting industry requirements
The discussion was facilitated by Regional Business HQ for Bundaberg Regional Council
as part of Council’s Bundaberg Jobs Commitment initiative
and Queensland Department of Education as part of their innovative Bundaberg Education Precinct Pilot
Bundaberg Region Mayor Helen Blackburn said the roundtable captured important information that would provide local insights and priorities for the Department of Education
“The discussion gave industry professionals the chance to influence the real world skills students are taught through vocational and work study programs,” Mayor Blackburn said
and the percentage of our population nearing retirement age
highlights an increasing demand for the next generation of skilled workers to join the regional workforce
“The opportunity to provide this input will create many positives
but also for the industry that will benefit as a result of this work being implemented locally.”
A cross-section of industry and business attended the workshop
which included structured breakout sessions to ensure every voice was heard
From the information collated across the day
the group identified ten key attributes and skills valued most by potential employers
communication skills and problem solving ability
adaptability and being self-motivated were also pinpointed as desirable attributes in a prospective employee
and accountability rounded out the top ten attributes employers were looking for in young people joining the workforce
The Bundaberg Jobs Commitment is a Bundaberg Regional Council initiative connecting employers with young people

What we are really down on is small business owners
As many of them retired early after making there money to refill places like the arcades
There is more incentives to help small business get going these days including
Note this list is a heading list clicking on each industry will provide some further break down inside of the industry
We need places to live & motels built there’s also a shopping prescient at Kepnock that has expansion in mind
New hospital & master plans on the agenda
There’s a huge amount more that has been green lit by council already in private construction
It’s clear that construction has a extremely bright future in Bundaberg
Hervey Bay has similar plans & could also use with the boost
If the LNP gets in put Bundabergs hand up for a Nuclear power plant think of the jobs
I bet they’d pay excellent to work at the power plant
Also switch your JSA if you don’t find the one you are with helpful it’s quite easy
If your JSA has not successfully got you into work in 6 months they are not doing a very good job
I feel it should be our responsibility as a region to help create both business success & jobs
That we should shop local in a store don’t buy from the internet unless you have to
see the local tourist attractions first before expanding including booking into a local motel
dine out or order takeaway a reasonable amount
treat our sleeves to services like laser clinic use
renovate our homes to increase there value using local trades people
If those of us who can afford to spend more did it would help create the jobs that we need into the future
Remember the internet shop dose not hire you or your kids
Almost all the advertised jobs are on JORA look there
It’s likely about getting your name out there so you can start getting training & experience
Try doing something out of the box to boost your chances what I usto do was print menus I developed for the restaurants I worked at and put them in peoples mail boxes
How about some of you make a local property/ business investment company
Join the business & home development effort
This influx of new residents post COVID appear to be opening up all sorts of Businesses to add to opportunity
They should also be putting more demand on existing businesses as well
I’m already getting heaps more work & it should continue to increase
Is there a way we can turn this AI & Crypto thing into jobs for the kids
Sounds like alot of money is being spent on it
IT is a poor employer in our region but that could change
Some of you should really think about opening business as well
E-sports & ray-tracing you’d think there would be demand for PC repair & PC upgrade shops
Perhaps internet cafes as well with upgraded gaming/streaming capable PCs
Lukey PC Repairs has a huge building maybe they might need staff
There’s also a number of established companies in Australia already if you are willing to travel

The Bundaberg Region is likely to experience severe coastal hazards today and into the weekend resulting from Tropical Cyclone Alfred with the Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) moving to Lean Forward
While the Bureau of Meteorology’s latest Tropical Cyclone Information Bulletin
advises there is increasing confidence that Alfred will stay offshore
severe coastal hazards remain likely for the Bundaberg Region
At 4 pm on Friday 28 February 2025 the Bundaberg Region LDMG moved to Lean Forward
This is an operational state prior to ‘stand up’ during which the LDMG will maintain a heightened level of situational awareness and operational readiness
particularly those in coastal localities between Baffle Creek and the mouth of the Burrum River
As a precaution we ask that residents do not access boat ramps or beaches from 28 February until the cyclone threat passes
Some parks assets like water taps and barbecues which are very close to the coastline have been temporarily turned off
Local Disaster Management Group Chair Mayor Helen Blackburn said the region’s current concern was larger than normal wave activity
“We’ve met this morning with the state disaster management group and we’ve all been briefed on what’s happening and what the possible scenarios are,” Mayor Blackburn said
but we don’t expect the cyclone to cross the coast [at this stage]
some rain and certainly some larger than normal wave activity

Credit: LUKAS COCH/AAPIMAGEPrime Minister Anthony Albanese jetted into Bundaberg late Saturday morning to sell his second hot-button election issue of the day - “Buy Australian.” The visit to the Bundaberg Brewed Drinks Brewery comes ahead of the US’s so-called “liberation day” on April 2
when the Labor Government is bracing for a fresh round of punishing tariffs that have the potential to knock its economic messaging off kilter
Mr Albanese earlier this month invoked the phrase “buy Bundy” after US President Donald Trump refused to exempt Australian steel and aluminium from his tariff regime
slapping 25 per cent taxes on Australian products
The PM stressed this would be more constructive than retaliatory tariffs that would fuel domestic inflation
Labor has since launched a $20m campaign to encourage more Australian companies to buy locally made products and support more local manufacturers and producers to get Australian Made certification
representing 40,000 jobs and a combined annual revenue of around $8 billion
After a tour of the factory on Saturday and sampling its goods
he raised one of the company’s soft drinks to urge “buy Australian folks
for Australian jobs.” “We want to celebrate what is here
when you combine it with another Bundy product
the world’s best Dark and Stormy as well,” said Mr Albanese

they know straight away which products are made in Australia
good for the local community and good for Australia.”
It is feared that a second round of tariffs this week could impose an even more punishing levy on Australia’s agricultural and pharmaceutical sectors
Details of the new tariff wave under the “Fair and Reciprocal Trade Plan” are still under wraps
but the White House has suggested it will target any rules it considers “unfair.”
This could mean Washington will take aim at several Australian domestic policies
including bio-security rules that govern food imports
and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS)
undermining his healthcare message ahead of the election
“We’ve put a very clear message to anyone who’s listening
our PBS is not up for negotiations.” Bundaberg’s Hinkler seat
most recently represented by former LNP member Keith Pitt
is safely held by the Coalition and Mr Albanese’s message was targeted at national concerns over external economic shocks and global instability
“Aussie shoppers love to buy Australian products made by Aussie workers where they can,” he said
“They also love the idea that buying Australian helps the country stand on its own two feet.”
