Burleigh Heads has always been well-known on the Gold Coast
but in recent years its popularity has exploded
The Gold Coast suburb will be home to the World Surf League’s (WSL) Bonsoy Gold Coast Pro from May 3 for up to 10 days
with thousands expected to descend to the beach to watch the best surfers in the world
It is the first time an event of this size has run on the Gold Coast since 2019
The event’s move from Snapper Rocks was forced by damage to the famed surf break and foreshore from ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred earlier this year

Since the inception of the Tweed River Sand Bypassing Project in 2001 sand has been dredged from the river floor and deposited outside of the its mouth

Prevailing southerly swells then push this sand north to fill up the bays of Duranbah and Froggies
before it rounds the corner and creates a mile-long

The builder-developer has teamed with Formplus for its One Burleigh project comprising 16 full-floor apartments
Previous plans for a 30-unit highrise scheme on the 809sq m site at 88 The Esplanade were shelved a few years ago and deposits returned to buyers as construction-cost escalations and labour shortages gripped the sector
Mayd Group went back to the drawing board for a redesign targeting the Gold Coast’s resilient ultra-luxury residential market
The changes were given the green light in June last year and further detailed design amendments followed
Director Todd Mould said the start of construction milestone for One Burleigh underscored the enduring strength of premium real estate as a resilient investment
tangible assets like high-quality real estate continue to offer stability and long-term value,” he said
“Stockmarkets around the world may be fluctuating but real estate—particularly at the premium end—remains one of the most resilient and proven long-term investment avenues.”
Construction of the MAS Architecture-designed scheme is scheduled for completion by late next year
Each of One Burleigh’s 16 apartments features four bedrooms with floor plans spanning up to 425sq m as well as three carparking spaces
Contracts already have been signed for almost half the units with prices starting from $8.85 million and rising to $15 million-plus

Will Surf in Gold Coast ProJulian Wilson and Sophie McCulloch are two more wildcards for the Championship Tour to deal with at Burleigh Heads
The last time these Australians were on the WSL Championship Tour together was way back in 2021
But both are back as wildcards for the 2025 Gold Coast Pro
Stephanie by way of an invite and Julian by winning the local trials event yesterday before the competition window opens
The Gold Coast is one of the few events on tour that has a trials contest
where the winner of each division gets the last wildcard in the main comp
Though it’s now at Burleigh this year because of the lack of sand at Snapper Rocks
the trials event went off on the new point without a hitch
Julian, 36, is so eager to surf in a CT jersey again that he couldn’t wait for his 2025 Challenger Series wildcards to kick in. He won this event at firing Snapper in 2018 on a bum shoulder. Now, four years after his semi-retirement to focus on family, he's looking as spry as ever on those crisp JS boards.
“I have had the privilege of winning this event and surfing in another final
and I was actually getting quite emotional out there at the thought of getting another opportunity to surf at this level at this event
Competing against the best surfers is what I want
and I can’t believe it’s come around this quickly to get this opportunity

“I’ve had a few wins recently, but this one definitely takes the cake,” she said. “I’m just so excited to test myself against the world’s best once again, as I don’t feel I was truly surfing my best when I got my first opportunity on the CT. Hopefully, I can get going this week and do some damage.”

This Saturday we’ll see the Gold Coast Pro return to Snapper Rocks...I mean Burleigh Heads
With the WSL's return to the Gold Coast announced and anticipated, Tropical Cyclone Alfred threw a spanner in the works
rearranging the Superbank into a fragmented mess of a wave
A huge sand slug was dumped north of the point, creating a very poor right hander and slightly better left
The misshapen sand is slowly sorting itself out
however the WSL took early action knowing it wouldn't be ready in time. Thus the decision was made to move the event to Burleigh Heads and the quality of the bank there isn’t too shabby at all
So what’s in store for the coming event window
Plenty of easterly trade-swell - possibly even too much at times - with multiple opportunities to run the event
The source of the easterly swell will be a strong high pressure system filling out into the Tasman Sea later this week and into the weekend as a couple of low pressure troughs squeeze its north-eastern flank
An initial surge of strong south-east winds through the Tasman Sea on Thursday and Friday should generate a good pulse of 3 foot mid-period south-east swell for Saturday
Conditions will be clean through the early-to-mid morning with a gusty S/SW breeze
deteriorating from later morning as winds shift more south-east and strengthens.
the mid-morning wind switch will be the biggest difference between Snapper and Burleigh
with Snapper through to Rainbow better angled to handle a south-east wind than Burleigh with its more exposed headland
the strong high is due to continue moving slowly east
while tropical instability to the north will squeeze pressure gradients
elongated fetch of easterly trade-winds that will slowly retract to the east along with the movement of the high
This is a great setup to provide consistent
moderate levels of easterly trade-swell to the Queensland coast
expected to slowly strengthen and increase in size through next week
At this stage we should see the trade-swell reaching 4-5 feet through early-mid next week and persisting at this size for the entire event window
though there’s the possibility for further intensifications which would boost the swell into the large size range
We'll keep a close eye on those developments so check back in
As the high and easterly trade-fetch slowly retract to the east
local winds will back off in strength and become more favourable
though still following the general pattern of morning south-southwesterlies ahead of fresh afternoon south-easterlies
will the organisers get a quick start and run in smaller cross-shore surf this weekend, or focus on the better quality easterly trade-swell next week onwards
We're tipping more towards the latter than the former
We’ll provide running updates on any upgrades in next week’s swell in the commentary below
it really feels like this is the first time we’ve had a relatively promising one in about two years
it’ll be consistent and I think that’s really all you need
I do think the short period and fragmented nature of Burleigh may not necessarily lend itself to the traditional point surfers
I’m sure the air boys will be well in the mix
Beachie and cove seem to be able to handle it
Morning lows should coincide nicely with the lighter winds
The Woz will dine out on drone shots of the headland and talle
Should see the performance bar lifted for this comp

Burleigh likes the same swell direction as Needledicks -SSE
That's one of the more unusual surf spot parallels I've heard of
Took me years to figure out that south misses the coast entirely
SSE misses Currumbin and turns snapper into a zoo with waves that aren't ideal
and any predominant East in the swell is dangerous -swell events always marked by injuries because it locks you into shallow sandbanks on repeat
Worth noting the similarity between backdoor barrel entries at both the entry to the cove and needledicks -starts off super small and jacks to overhead in an instant
So many crystal tubular memories -including a mystical bending white out dissapearing/reapperaring singlefin act on the afternoon of MPs funeral
burleigh heads -the place to get punch by a junkie
face slam a turd and leave with an ear infection and foot cut
Shame that Wahoos Fish Tacos isnt open anymore
Forecast would have been incredible if snapper had banks
Unfortunately the banks at Burleigh are only just passable right now
Still there will be fun waves and the setup is HUGE
Going to be a fun weekend and i can't wait
but it seems to have that same vibe as The Hill at Adelaide Oval
@Roadkill if staying at Cooly easier to just get a bus rather than drive and find parking

Burleigh and Kirra were always the premiere breaks back in the day
Rainbow and Greenmount were separate breaks and we would always hit Burleigh any chance we could get
I remember coming up from Broken for the Stubbies and it seemed such a big deal at the time
I have never seen a swell in VIC with those numbers
so are you reliant on deep water to the bank to give it a bit of oomph
The East Coast loves these mid-period swells
ha I am not sure if you pulling my leg or not however double the grunt would probably do it
Swell direction and bathymetry far more important than swell periods
We actually get quite a few glancing long period S swells but they rarely show much up here
A straight E/SE to E/NE swell in the 8-10 second band slamming onto shallow sand bars will be far more impactful than a 17 second S swell
Any swell direction with an E in it and a good bank = good surf
easter long weekend was a long period up on the sunnycoast
i prefer the short period swells more peaks and more waves at my local
the long period made my local a right hand point break
way less waves coming through and when they did was pretty much one peak
Do u know what state of the banks are at Currumbin
Surely that could be an option if Burleigh is shit
4 to 5 foot behind the rock is a great wave
A short section behind the rock and then fatness for ever
Currumbin is in poor state following Alfred & will take long time to recover...
massive hole next to the keyhole & barely breaking.
Straight & sectioning down the rest of the bank
Water quality still poor on run out tide due to crazy amount of rain up the valley.
FYI Springbrook had nearly 1500mm of rain in March
Ground is soaked and any rain is simply running off
there is no white water after it has broken and they are gutless and hard to get on to as they lack push (except if it is exceptional) so you have to jump into them at the last - hollow and gutless minute - tricky when you aren't used to it
Normal mid-period swells are 10x better than that
then there's a marked improvement in energy from 8-10s
with swells from 11s onwards coming in quite straight and lined up
Sorry for all the questions as I am really intrigued by the difference
it amazed me when moving from South Australia to the East Coast to see how well the lower-period swells performed
Thanks Craig so anything at or above 8-10 sec is the way to go for my next trip up the coast
You don't need above Memlasurf - maybe if all you want to surf is a particular point or reef
Most beach breaks shut down at periods 11'' or above
Yeah usually a point or reef I surf some good beachies all the time where I live so looking for a change of pace
whenever i hear "burleigh heads" all i can think of is butt implants
and question myself is this the origional birthplace of the bogan
I think you're getting mixed up with Surfers Paradise
That place is a world away from Burls and there's an invisible Trump Wall called Hooker Boulevard that southerners rarely go north of

Agree with sentiments above- would be an all-time f/cast for Snapper with what looks more like a good late Summer synoptic pattern
Bank at Burleigh look serviceable but it will be more like a beachie than classic point surf- we may even see some lefts scored
It won't handle too much size so hopefully there should be plenty of days in that sweet spot 3-4 (occ.5) ft range
Clean slate as far as local knowledge or form goes
My gut says Sammy Pupo- he will love those random
beachiue style waves with one or two big turns and a close-out air/hit
Looks like the squeeze has backed off a little and will sit in that sweet spot of 3-5ft
impossible to see the Brazil crew not doing well in this event
would love to see LOB punch his way through to the finals
looking forward to watching a bit of Burleigh WSL style
decent size and offshore winds is all we need

Ha ha - he wouldn't be the first one of us to get lost or make a mistake
Let's hope it all pans out and the waves play ball
Be interesting to see if they run on the weekend- I think they will be motivated to run
Very weird situation for the Womens Wildcards
Both Defay and Tati are gone for the season
Nadia gets a season long replacement wildcard for Defay
Ellie Harrison only gets one opportunity to replace Tati at Bells
Luana Silva gets a season wildcard to replace Steph
Surely Ellie should get the opportunity to replace Tati until the cut
i could think of 5 more surfers that should of got it instead of jordy lawler

burly a shadow of what it used to be since they created the superbank
Everywhere north suffered palmy used to have the best beachies going round now once in a while and only briefly
There was an article on swellnet that explained it all: can have a super bank or great kirra but not both for sand pumping
ask any long time burly local they’ll say the same thing
before the superbank burly was the premier break with consistent cove and rocky and then kirra when it got bigger and the winds had east in if
shories on high call it coincidence but that’s tbd way it went
yep i was starting to like the thought of fil not making the top 5
what a shame it would be though if fil was in the top 5 at big pumping cloudbreak
Saturday's SE swell looks good and to 3ft+ along with gusty morning offshores
shifting S/SE through the afternoon (a full surf day)
The swell will ease a little into Sunday but still likely be 3ft with similar morning winds
less favourable and gusty SE into the afternoon (maybe half a day competition)
Localised E/SE trade-swell in the 3ft+ range for early week looks to ease Tuesday afternoon
stronger E'ly trade-swell from Thursday to a good 4ft
Local winds will follow the similar S/SW tending fresh SE pattern early next week
With this we could see competition ran again Monday/Tuesday mornings
Wow that would be epic - just smash it out without the usual delays and multiple lay days

How's it breaking through the tidal range RK
Getting fatter and you need to move more north away from the point
I didn’t see too much as I had to leave for work
The increase in swell should move it back towards the point
Disclaimer…I am a very poor weather/swell forecaster
I saw it last weekend on the high when there was that east swell in the water
Beach break was really good and a few out at the cove - in between not so much..........

The 2025 Gold Coast CT finds a new (old) home
Just when you thought the Superbank was making its long-overdue comeback to the main tour
a cyclone — into the once finely tuned sand works of Snapper Rocks
Following our reports of the infinite chasm once known as Snapper Rocks
the World Surf League has officially pulled the pin on running the 2025 Gold Coast Pro in Coolangatta
they’re packing up the scaffolding and heading a few clicks north to Burleigh Heads — another iconic Queensland venue with plenty of chest-thumping history
“Snapper Rocks is one of the most perfect waves in the world, and this was an extremely difficult decision to shift locations,” said WSL APAC President, Andrew Stark
“Our priority is to ensure world-class conditions for our athletes and fans
and given the state of the bank at Snapper Rocks and the lack of time to replenish the sand
we are confident this is the right decision to ensure the success of the 2025 Gold Coast CT
We are fortunate on the Gold Coast to have another world-class
right-hand point break just up the coast that has a rich history of running elite surfing events
so we will relocate this year’s event to Burleigh Heads
We look forward to celebrating this event in a community steeped in surfing history
We absolutely look forward to returning to Snapper Rocks in 2026.”
Indeed, Burleigh is no consolation prize. Nestled beneath a lava rock headland, the picturesque, cobblestone-covered point helped write the playbook on competitive surfing back in 1977 during the Stubbies Surf Classic
where the world’s first man-on-man heats took place
It’s since pumped out perennial Aussie talents spanning generations — Rabbit
On its day — and there are quite a few — Burleigh can dish out freight-train
spinning barrels just metres from the crowd on its grassy green hill
The wave itself breaks across three main sections
is the heaviest — working with raw SE swells and unloading into a steep
The Cove offers square barrel sections when the wind’s right — short
and occasionally linking up with a down-the-line section waiting to be carved and belted to smithereens
And then there’s The Point: the real reason everyone shows up
backdoorable peaks peeling for 100 metres over sand and rock
And if you’re wanting to try before you buy, you’re in luck. Burleigh is already set to host the Australian Boardriders Battle Grand Final on April 12–13 (read about last year’s here)
serving as an appetizer for CT groupies ahead of the Gold Coast Pro
and some locals treating the point like it owes them money
Gold Coast tourism suits are trying to keep their schooner glasses half-full
“While we are disappointed Snapper Rocks won’t be hosting the highly anticipated return of the Championship Tour
we know Burleigh is a world-class point break which will challenge the globe’s very best surfers,” Experience Gold Coast CEO John Warn said
the relocation of the Gold Coast Pro to Burleigh provides a unique and very special opportunity to watch the world’s leading surfers do battle at one of the world’s most iconic surfing destinations steeped in history
There is no doubt our famous Superbank at Snapper will return better than ever
and we look forward to seeing the Gold Coast Pro back to its rightful home for the 2026 event and beyond.”
The event window remains the same — May 3 to 13 — but now with Burleigh as the main act
and even Snapper will stay on the radar as potential backup spots
The thief was finally taken into custody after paddling circles around police for nearly two hours
According to reports
a man has been arrested after allegedly stealing a surfboard at Burleigh Heads
then running into the water with it and leading the police on a slow-motion chase for nearly two hours
The incident occurred near the Burleigh Heads Surf Club on Friday. Burleigh Heads, the replacement venue for the WSL’s Gold Coast Pro that was supposed to take place at Snapper Rocks
so the whole thing unfolded in front of more than a few onlookers
A Queensland Police Service spokesman told reporters that a 49-year-old man stole a black and blue surfboard at about 11:55 a.m
the man paddled out to evade capture and repeatedly refused authorities’ instructions to return to the beach
Lifeguards watched until more officers arrived on the scene
nor has the man’s identity been released

A good day to be a surfer at Burleigh Heads
Good Friday at Burleigh Heads was a good day to be a surfer indeed
A solid pulse of swell fired up the famous point
since Good Friday is a public holiday in Australia
And since there are a million workers who’d rather be surfing in that land of surfers
the crowds are part and parcel of the whole surfing experience
it’s hard to remind yourself that you are part of the crowd you hate surfing with
Just a few waves under the belt at a place like Burleigh Heads on a day like Good Friday would make up for all the annoyance of dodging the sea of humans paddling around in the actual sea
and that’s why everyone keeps coming back
Nicolas Cage “Could’ve Died” While Filming ‘The Surfer’
which will be held at Burleigh Heads instead of Snapper Rocks
Do you remember the last time the Championship Tour landed on the Gold Coast of Australia
Before the creation of the Final 5 Championship Event
The Gold Coast was the kickoff event every year for a reason – gorgeous colored water
and the opportunity for surfers to get barreled at Kirra/Snapper Rocks/The Superbank
So when the event popped back up on the 2025 schedule
But even the most well thought-out plans can crumble when Mother Nature intervenes
Cyclones did a number on the sand filtered into the area
and we are now looking at an event being held at Burleigh Heads – just up the coast
Burleigh has it's own hallowed history and many on the Gold Coast actively seek out the barrel section as massive crowds swarm the Super Bank
but a solid alternative to a premiere surf spot
