Player most likely to become a coach one day The Bears were eight points away from rejoining the top flight after two strong seasons in Division One The most decorated EDFL women's player Krissy Trang has signed with Williamstown VFLW this season which will leave a significant void in the Bears' midfield when unavailable while the departure of the Stevens sisters will also hurt they've been able to bring some players in and their squad was strong from which a deeper contribution coach Michael Davis is looking for in 2025 to replicate previous seasons Burnside Heights experienced the biggest drop in median house prices among the suburbs in Melton according to the Real Estate Institute of Victoria’s (REIV) The new housing market insight reported on the dwelling prices from October to December YPA Melton sales manager Ryan Anders said he was expected a strong result in the coming quarter “There’s more people coming to open [inspections] more people inquiring on properties,” he said “I would say this quarter shouldn’t be any downturn and it should be starting some sort of move slightly towards the more positive sign.” Burnside and Burnside Heights are the top two suburbs with the biggest drop in its median sales price in the Melton area Burnside Heights’ median house price fell by 13.1 per cent Burnside’s prices fell by 10.3 per cent with prices dropping from $794,000 to $712,000 Meanwhile Eynesbury and Hillside both had a significant rise in their median house prices Eynesbury’s median house price rose 11.4 per cent from $605,000 to $674,000 “It has to do a lot about affordability,” Mr Anders said median house prices rose from $735,500 to $802,500 Aintree had the slightest rise in its growth with 1.2 per cent Taylors Hill’s median house price had the smallest drop at 0.2 per cent Regional areas in Moorabool like Bacchus Marsh Ballan and Gordon all recorded a downturn in median house prices dropping by 13 per cent from $862,500 to $750,000 with median sale price dropping to $619,500 from $627,500 Mr Anders said there are still a lot of people moving in the fringes of Melbourne “A lot of people are going to that area and that drives the prices up quite high,” Heights in the Airport Toyota Women’s Division One grand final It’s only been the past two years that these sides have faced each other but it has become one of the stronger rivalries in the competition The Bears were the only team to beat the Jets in the regular season last year before having one foot in a grand final in the semi final A goal in the dying seconds from Talia Motta put the Jets into a second straight grand final while the Bears were then knocked out in straight sets Not many people would have been surprised to see the two teams at the top again this time This year it was the Bears that lost just once during the regular season The Jets then stunned the Bears in the semi final to win through to a third straight grand final Burnside Heights joined them a week later with a win in the prelim to win through to its second women’s grand final the Bears have been the clear best team all season They finished 10 points clear on top of the ladder and scored almost 200 more points than the Jets and fourth respectively in the leading goal kicking and they had five players in the top 10 The Bears need to make the most of their shots on goal having been wasteful at times throughout the season they conceded just under 12 points per game Only three times they've conceded three or more goals in a game and all three games have been against the Jets they have the best player in the division in Krissy Trang Five players from the 2018 grand final team played in the side's preliminary final win among them some of the Bears biggest names the Jets have a strong core group in the middle of the ground They build their game around them and then have options going forward Magri hasn’t had the impact she would have liked in the past two grand finals kicking the only Jets goal in 2022 and not kicking one last season who has won the leading goalkicker the last three seasons can get on top then the Jets are hard to stop The group brings the experience of heartbreak to the match as well Thirteen players from last season’s grand final loss played in the semi final while seven players from that semi final have featured in both grand finals Coach Troy Newton said they would look to approach the grand final differently this year after the past two and not getting the result they were after Last year illness ran through the club in the lead up to the grand final which didn’t help things against the red hot Essendon Doutta Stars Newton said players would miss out this time round with the list good to go the loss in the semi final was a wake up call It was the first time they had been beaten like that this season and didn’t have the answers when needed Bears coach Michael Davis said he thought the group was in a better mindset than 12 months ago All the matches this season have been leading to this grand final clash The key for the match isn’t likely to be the stars of each side The match will be decided by that next group of players and who can step up in the big moments Which side’s bottom players will show something when most needed It was an emotional win for Burnside Heights on Saturday in the Essendon District Football League division 2 competition It was a tumultuous off season for the Bears after they were found guilty of breaking the salary cap which led to limited recruiting and some key players leaving that meant nothing as the Bears upset Hadfield to get on the board this season Coach Cole Harvey said it was nice for the playing group to get a win early on “I didn’t have high expectations,” Harvey admitted “We ran into a good Glenroy side in round one “We were a little bit off early against Glenroy in the first round when the whips were cracking We had four under-18s playing and we went back to the system that we have in place that works for well “We backed the boys in and it worked for us They put in the effort and we were happy for the morale of the whole group.” The Bears led early in the contest before the Hawks used the scoring end to turn an 11 point deficit into a nine point lead who kicked six goals to none to lead by 29 points at three quarter time “We had a really good third quarter,” Harvey said “We kicked six goals down to the bottom end Everyone had to play their role in the system “We scored a couple of goals and were able to steady and were able to control a fair bit of territory Jacob Ella kicked four goals for the Bears while Andrej Krunic and Zack Williams kicked two goals each Harvey said full back Tyson Iglesias was best on ground while Nick Cugllari was strong at half back He said skipper Jordan Hughes really led from the front late in the game it’s a bit of an emotional one,” Harvey said “It’s been a tumultuous off season to say the least We stuck together and played on 29 player points “It was really good and a morale boosting win.” Harvey was also really pleased with the performances of the under-18 boys who have stepped up saying Aidan Dogan and Ethan Dalla Rosa were particularly outstanding The coach said the young boys will get plenty of opportunities this season “There were a couple of bottom age 18s who played,” Harvey said but they will play with their age group as well “We are mindful of the physicality when they step up we will give them a chance at different times.” Harvey said they will celebrate the win and then start preparation for Coburg Districts on Anzac Day The Bears women’s side had 4.3 (27)-1.0 (6) loss to Strathmore in the division 1 competition Thanks to Brad Teal Woodards Real Estate scroll down to find on the feedback provided by the senior coaches The top of the table clash in the Essendon District Football League division 2 competition lived up to expectations Taylors Lakes and Burnside Heights entered the clash on the back of their first losses for the season The Bears jumped out to an early lead before the Lions slowly worked back into the game Nothing separated the two teams for most of the day The Lions took a small lead into three quarter time and held that throughout the last quarter The Bears had a long shot to take the lead in the last minute but weren’t able to convert Lions coach Steve Burns said it was a really good game of football “We got off to a bad start and they kicked the first five goals of the game “We managed to get back into the game and it was a cracking game of footy We stuck to the structures and I was proud of the coaching group and players they didn’t panic and we started to play our game.” Burns said they managed to start winning the ball around the contest which was what turned the game back in their favour He said once the midfield got into the game they started to get the ball heading into their forward line “We learned a lot from watching the week before when they lost to Westy [Westmeadows],” Burns said The Lions kicked the first goal of the final quarter to give them a little bit of breathing space Burns said they started to shift their game plan to scenario sort of things and managed to hold on Luke Nappi kicked three goals for the Lions Burns said he was impressed with young ruck Daniel Klonowski who stepped up and really provided a contest Darby Lalor and Aaron Vendramini were other standouts Tyson Iglesias and Lachlan Evans were named the Bears best The win was made even more pleasing for the Lions with the side missing eight players out of their best 22 He said they would likely get a number of those players back including Chris Vulic and Lachlan Rayner after their bye in two weeks “The pleasing thing is all three sides are sitting on top which is really good for the footy club,” he said “There’s still a lot of hard work to be done but with the amount of injuries we’ve got we’ve still been able to be competitive in all three grades.” The Lions this week face bottom side East Sunbury before a bye the following week Burnside Heights host Coburg Districts in a twilight game Airport West will take on Pascoe Vale this Saturday at Hansen Reserve The Eagles are currently last on the ladder and winless so far after six games their most recent game a 22-point loss to Greenvale in a valiant effort that just wasn’t enough to get them a win They'll play against a Pascoe Vale side recovering from a 133-point loss to Keilor which will see them either low on confidence The Panthers only managed a single goal against Keilor for the whole match which occurred in the opening quarter it was pretty much one-way traffic against Pacco who simply couldn't match Keilor’s relentlessness The undefeated Keilor host East Keilor at Joe Brown Oval this weekend Keilor are coming off a huge win against Pascoe Vale which somehow has made them an even more ominous prospect to face Impressively Keilor had 13 goalkickers in the dominant win showing they aren’t reliant on just one or two forwards to kick their goals East Keilor are coming off a 20-point loss to Essendon Doutta Stars in which they dropped off in the second half something they can't afford to do this week Lachlan Smart continued his good goalkicking form slotting four goals and taking his season tally to 19 and will be a primary focus in the forward half for Mick McGuane East Keilor came as close as anyone to Keilor in 2023 and will be hoping to do the same Deer Park will battle it out against Avondale Heights at John McLeod Reserve Deer Park are coming off a 122-point thrashing at the hands of Aberfeldie as their record this season now sits at one win from six matches Deer Park showed little resistance against Aberfeldie as the two blues piled on 25 goals to just the six from Deer Park Avondale are also coming off a 100-point loss and will also be looking to respond and try to build some momentum in what has been a tough stretch Strathmore will face off against Greenvale at Sewell Reserve in a match that is crucial to both teams Strathmore are fresh off a 100-point demolition of Avondale Heights and their only losses so far have come against the two teams above them on the ladder have struggled against teams below them on the ladder which Strathmore beat relatively easily The Jets will see their match against Strathmore as a great opportunity to prove they are finals contenders who can match it with the best teams Essendon Doutta Stars will play Aberfeldie at Nipper Jordan Oval to round out the top flight's action Essendon Doutta Stars have had a mixed start to the season so far with three wins and three losses and are coming off a stifling win against East Keilor Douttas showed great attacking prowess and a strong ability to run out the game Aberfeldie scored a huge win over Deer Park last weekend in a result that showed the experience and class of Abers Aberfeldie were deadly in front of goal booting 25 majors with Josh Kemp and Karl Brown booting seven goals each Brown now has 24 goals this season leading the goalkicking tally by five goals Craigieburn will take on Oak Park at Highgate Recreation Reserve to kick off Division One Craigieburn have had a great season thus far having lost only one game from five and are coming into this clash with a 100-point win over Keilor Park under their belt The Eagles dominated from start to finish and forward John Bellino was particularly impressive slotting eight goals Oak Park are coming off an 11-point loss to Hillside and while not a win the Kangaroos will take great confidence from the fact they were able to push the undefeated Hillside all the way The Kangaroos have played some competitive football this season and will see this weekend's game as another opportunity to show they can match it with some top sides Hillside hosts Keilor Park this Saturday at Hillside Recreation Reserve Hillside remain undefeated after a late comeback from Oak Park was not enough to end Hillside’s early season dominance Josh Covelli was the star of the show for Hillside as he has been so often this season booting eight majors to take his season tally to an outstanding 36 goals Keilor Park will be looking to keep Covelli’s influence to a minimum this weekend as they try to bounce back from a tough 100-point loss to Craigieburn Keilor Park currently sit last and winless after six games and will find it next to impossible to get their first win against the first placed Hillside A well-rested St Albans will battle it out at Kings Park Reserve against a Tullamarine outfit keen to build some momentum on the season The Demons recorded their second win last week with a 54-point triumph over Moonee Valley buoyed by returning stars A win for Tulla will keep them in touch of the finals group and a game behind the Saints which will be pivotal for the confidence of the group moving forward Roxburgh Park will play Rupertswood at Lakeside Reserve this weekend with both teams coming off tough losses Roxburgh Park are looking to bounce back this weekend as they suffered a tough 118-point loss in their last game against Maribyrnong Park Roxy simply had no answers to Marby’s dominance and fell apart in the last term conceding nine goals while only scoring one themselves Rupertswood could not contain West Coburg’s many goalkicking options with four players West Coburg booting four or more goals This week is an opportunity for both sides to wipe those defeats and build some confidence Moonee Valley will face off against West Coburg at Ormond Park to round out the weekend's action The Fog struggled last week against Tullamarine losing by 54 points and a matchup against West Coburg is not an ideal follow up match Ben Ryan’s four goals were a positive in the loss against Tulla and the Valley will be hoping he brings his kicking boots for this week’s game West Coburg will be confident after a massive 148-point demolition job on Rupertswood It was an all-round performance from the Burgers who kept Rupertswood to just four goals while piling on 27 of their own from 40 shots at goal If West Coburg bring that same form to this weeks match then Moonee Valley will need to be at their best The unbeaten Burnside Heights host the Sunbury Kangaroos at Burnside Heights Recreation Reserve Burnside had a tough match last weekend against Glenroy but did just enough winning by three points to keep their undefeated streak alive The Bears trailed at the final change but were just able to overcome Glenroy kicking three goals to two in the final term Sunbury Kangaroos suffered a 27-point loss to Westmeadows which is indicative of an inconsistent season thus far but they'll certainly remain confident they can beat the best Coburg Districts will face off against local rival Glenroy this weekend at Cole Reserve Districts are coming off a bye from last week which they will hope has helped them reset after a tough start to the season so far After winning their first game of the season Coburg Districts has gone on to lose their last four by narrow margins and are currently sitting second last on the ladder Glenroy have also only won a single game so far but a close loss to the unbeaten Burnside by less than a goal will give them confidence going forward that they can beat any team on their day East Sunbury take on Hadfield at John McMahon Recreation Reserve East Sunbury’s struggles continued last weekend after they lost by 62 points to the Northern Saints they were able to create 20 scoring shots but their execution was off only kicking six goals Hadfield were demolished by Taylors Lakes last weekend and will see this week’s match as a big chance to get back on the winner's board The Hawks have had a bit of a mixed start to the season so far with two wins and three losses and will see this match as a way to get some winning momentum going forward Taylors Lakes will play Northern Saints at Lionheart Reserve to round out the weekend's action The Lions are still unbeaten after a massive win over Hadfield last weekend as they continue to push their premiership credentials they were able to score 21 goals without star forward Ben Weightman Northern Saints recorded their first win of the season last week as the 62-point win will surely get the group going as they look to build their season The 2024 season is just around the corner so EDFL Media will be previewing each club heading into Round One we chat to Burnside Heights coach Cole Harvey who provides some insights on their 2024 campaign "We had to get active in the recruiting market to bring some players in to fill gaps We were able to identify them pretty early and get moving on those "I think the biggest thing is now that we've got them all in it's been about getting them all together and getting them used to the way that we want to play." "We were desperately in need of some forwards There was definitely a push toward trying to find some forwards "A lot of younger kids were given an opportunity last year and they've all had solid preseasons but we're really excited about the fact that there's going to be a reasonably high competition for spots in the senior team We played Tullamarine in a match sim and there were about four or five of those kids who got a go we feel we've filled the gaps or added depth to the areas we wanted." "Matthew Larkin has had another really good preseason Josh Neralic has been good as well coming off a runner-up best and fairest in his first year of senior footy He's put some size on so it'll be interesting to see how he goes in his second year "But one of the older boys who we didn't get to see a whole lot last year got right back into his running and he's been outstanding." "We feel the list that we've put together will put us in a position to challenge for a spot in the finals But with two teams coming down and most of the sides being really active in the recruiting space "The big thing we've been working towards has been getting 18s and it looks like we'll have that group for the first time in three years which is great Our overall numbers are great and we're hoping our reserves team will become more competitive which we expect will be the case we've certainly got our eye on September action that's for sure was there a focus for recruiting bigger bodies or more experienced players this offseason It just so happened that the players we wanted to bring in had a fair bit of experience under their belt We needed some bigger bodies around the ball and up forward but I don't know if it was by design I would have been just as content to get a 22-year-old power forward from somewhere with not as much experience but it just so happened it fell that way You found yourself just out of the finals race in 2023 were there any factors that you identified that held you back One of the areas we had to address was our depth and I think that was the biggest thing holding us back We lost some pretty significant players towards the end of the year and we just weren't able to cover them You look at the sides that all played finals last year they all had really good second sides so we knew had to top up and increase our depth You kept quiet in the off season and took a while to start announcing your signings that were already locked away Were you just trying to do your work in the background We felt like we missed the mark a little bit last year it was frustrating but the competition to get there was strong we were working really hard in the background not only with recruiting but with trying to improve our system One opposition player you’d love on your side My favourite player Rhys Magin has gone but Joshy Trembearth (Hadfield) is a ripping lad Michael Shailer (Braybrook) & Fabian Beazley (Sunshine Heights) Matt Giuliano (Woodside) & Thomas Raffaele (Hillside) Burnside Heights have brought in some experience and bigger bodies to complement their youth as they look to push back into the finals They've recruited some players that boost their top-end which has in turn assisted their depth and should find themselves right in the mix come the pointy end of the season It'll yet again be an even Division Two so it won't be easy With the 2023 season just around the corner EDFL Media will be previewing each club heading into Round One we chatted to new Burnside Heights coach Cole Harvey who provided some insights on their 2023 campaign "Our number one box to tick this pre-season was education around our game system and introducing the group to a very structured simulation-based training program Everything we do at training has a purpose and we feel as though the boys have responded particularly well to this type of chaos training and education As a first-year coach I also needed some time to assess the squad based on our training structure We have a very experienced strength and conditioning coach in Scott Jardine who worked with this group in 2022 the fitness component of our pre-season has been at a very high level and we are very comfortable with our groups' fitness and conditioning "Watching the 2022 Division Two season from afar I thought Aidan Stott and the club did a wonderful job in playing finals and being defeated by a very good team in Coburg Districts in the elimination final by a couple of goals we certainly wanted to build some depth within our list and create a competitive environment for players to really earn their spot in our senior 22 and at the same time allow all players to feel comfortable in a safe learning environment." "We believe we have addressed the areas we identified during our extensive list review when our coaching group was appointed we know we will need to be patien withday our young boys who have joined What I will say is that the new guys who have come across are wonderful young men coming from great families They have come into our program showing great enthusiasm bringing high standards and a desire to help drive our club for further success Our belief is having great people is at the forefront of sustained club success "We have retained 95 per cent of our list from 2022 which is a credit to our club Currently player retention is a real challenge for all clubs with the lure of more money and the temptation of playing at a higher level We are in a very strong position with our player points with all of last year's players only one or two pointers Amongst the recruitment of some very talented youth we have added some more experience which will further bolster our depth through our program." "Liam Mercieca who joined our club in March last year has only missed one or two sessions from early November He has really embraced the training and has continued with his own conditioning outside of our training We are expecting Liam to really benefit from a full preseason which will translate into games Matthew Larkin and Declan Highgate have been stand outs throughout the pre-season as well and Anthony Petrarca have all had solid pre-seasons and we are very excited to watch these young lads develop over the coming years." "I think every club is very optimistic at this time of the year From my conversations with a number of competing clubs I firmly believe the 2023 Strathmoe Community Bank Division Two competition could be the most competitive season in this division's history With Jacana unfortunately going into recess all clubs significantly improving their lists East Sunbury returning from recess and going on a recruiting spree and Sunbury Kangaroos coming back from Division One I can’t see how on any given day anyone can't beat anyone "So really our goal for 2023 is to keep our list healthy and engaged and give ourselves every opportunity to be highly competitive in all games providing a springboard into another finals campaign And sometimes you just need some luck in this game!" Luke Bonello (Hillside) & Matthew Knight (Benalla) Vincent Angelone (Taylors Lakes) & Sean Brennan (Western Saints Superules) The Bears will be returning to Tenterfield Drive following the ground repairs which saw them play at Brookside Recreation Reserve last season will be looking to push deeper into finals following their first week exit in 2022 They managed to plug the hole that Josh Covelli left with Theo Sapountzis and Jordan Hughes combining for 71 majors and have bolstered their list with a smattering of youth with an eye to the future With strong player retention and a refreshed outlook Harvey and the Bears will be aiming to build on the strong body of work Aidan Stott put in over six seasons in what promises to be a balanced Strathmore Community Bank Division Two competition They will have a strong test first up against the relegated Sunbury Kangaroos outfit who went undefeated in this competition in 2019 Burnside Heights was the big winner of the 2019 Strathmore Community Bank Division 2 season earning its maiden finals berth in senior men's ranks the Bears won their first five games of the year and went on to defeat every club Burnside Heights continued its historic run into the finals series by toppling Coburg Districts by 40 points in the knockout semi before going down to Moonee Valley in the Preliminary Final the following week Nathan Jenkinson (Yarraville Seddon Eagles) Luke Xerri (St Albans) & Mason Zahra (Caroline Springs) Daniel Royal (Macedon) & David Scholes (Western Rams) Boasting the division's best key forward in Josh Covelli (pictured) is an excellent starting point but the Bears made huge strides in 2019 because of the added talent they had in their line-up further up the ground Adam Sullivan and Jordan Hughes are all among the division's better players in their own right and having lost very little talent of note since its last game Burnside Heights enters 2021 as one of the teams to beat The Bears' opening month of fixtures is extremely tricky though so Aidan Stott's men will want to make an early impression against the likes of Moonee Valley Burnside Heights has appointed experienced coach Jeff Stevens as its women’s coach for the Essendon District Football League season With former coach Brent Thomas stepping down from the role due to health reasons last month Stevens has been given the job of leading the women’s side in their second season Stevens said one of the main reasons he decided to apply for the role was it allowed him to coach while he could still watch his three children play football His daughter Ebony Stevens plays in the Bears’ side while his other daughter Brodie is aligned with the Bears while playing with Williamstown in the VFLW competition will play with Melton in the Ballarat Football League this season “I haven’t coached for the last few seasons,” Stevens said “What interested me at the start was being able to coach the Burnside women’s side and I get to watch Dyson Stevens brings an extensive coaching background to the role not only from football but other sports as well He coached juniors at Deer Park from under-10s through to under-19s coached at the Western Jets and Western Region Football League interleague sides He’s also coached women’s netball and basketball for a number of years Stevens took his first training session with the women’s side last week and said he was ready to get things under way He said coaching a side which finished runners-up last season was something that excited him about the role The Bears lost just two matches last season “The girls have been thrown around a bit and as I said to them it’s about teaching them the correct technique If they can learn that it will help them a lot.” Burnside Heights sent an early statement to other sides in the Essendon District Football League division 2 competition Starting the season under lights on Friday night against a bit of an unknown Jacana side the Bears came away with a mammoth win that no one saw coming Bears’ president Justin Peagram said that while they were confident of getting the win the 23.9 (147)-12.11 (83) scoreline was thrilling “We were against the wind in the first quarter and we said the key for us was to kick goals against the wind “We got the first couple of goals … I think we scored nine goals against the wind and they only scored three.” Peagram said it was an even performance across the board with no real individual four-quarter efforts He said a lot of players ran out of legs in the second half Spearhead Joshua Covelli won the battle of the key forwards kicking eight goals to the four of Jacana’s Cameron Cloke Kristian Rocci and Nick Morda were all solid contributors Eight new faces made their debuts for the Bears on Friday night Peagram said the addition of those players had given the club extra depth He said the Bears were aiming to make finals for the first time this year after last year delivering their best season ever He said they had put together a list in the past few years they thought could take them to finals and that coach Aidan Stott had worked hard to develop the squad “We’ve built a team based on guys that can play a role week in “We’ve built the list – now we have to put up or shut up Sunbury Kangaroos made a winning start to their time in the EDFL by beating Northern Saints 17.7 (109)-12.10 (82) Coburg Districts defeated East Sunbury 14.10 (94)-10.13 (73) and Hadfield was too good for Keilor Park 29.17 (191)-3.2 (20) Hillside overcame a slow start against Oak Park to win 20.12 (132)-9.8 (62) Brandon Coletta kicked six goals for the Sharks and Jordan Sinclair kicked five West Coburg was too good for Roxburgh Park East Keilor smashed Taylors Lakes and Tullamarine got home against Westmeadows www.starweekly.com.au/sports/sunbury-teams-chase-silverware-as-home-town-rivalry-kicks-off/ www.starweekly.com.au/sports/confidence-boost-for-roxburgh-park/ www.starweekly.com.au/sports/keilor-young-gun-doesnt-hold-back-in-return-to-footy/ www.starweekly.com.au/sports/greenvale-happy-with-solid-first-up-victory/ Police and emergency services are currently at the scene of a fatal collision in Burnside Heights It is believed two vehicles collided near the corner of Westwood Drive and Tenterfield Drive about 3.30pm The male driver and only occupant of one of the vehicles has died at the scene The male driver of the second vehicle along with his passengers are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries The exact cause of the collision is being investigated Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au Strathmore Community Bank Division Two is shaping up to yet again be an even and open competition in season 2024 with a number of top-end recruits entering the fold. Westmeadows and Glenroy move into the division as Oak Park move out making it a nine-team competition. Tenterfield Drive is where the action will start on Friday night with a further three games filling up the Saturday!  Out: Joshua Walker (Mernda), Brandon Yankovski (East Sunbury), Habib Hosni (Hillside), Claudio Campos (East Sunbury), Liam Mercieca (Essendon Doutta Stars), Sam Beckinsale (Aberfeldie), Gabe Cristiano (Aberfeldie), Antonio-Carlos Zammit (Hillside), Matt Giuliano (Woodside) & Thomas Raffaele (Hillside). EDFL Media Says: Burnside Heights have brought in some experience and bigger bodies to complement their youth as they look to push back into the finals. They've recruited some players that boost their top-end which has in turn assisted their depth, and should find themselves right in the mix come the pointy end of the season. It'll yet again be an even Division Two so it won't be easy, but they've certainly got what it takes. Out: Liam Bianco (Avondale Heights), Oliver Aitken (Oak Park), Jakob Hanlon (Westmeadows), Tom Gleeson (Avondale Heights), John Delacoe (Airport West), Thomas Lay (Oak Park), Daniel Di Qual (Therry Penola), Bayley Overend (Essendon Doutta Stars), Connor Michielin (Westmeadows), Lukas Dimech (Pascoe Vale), Connor Mooney (Montmorency), Anthony Mardini (Airport West), Dylan Bieganski (Roxburgh Park), Lucas Leeds (PEGS) & Zeeshan Awan (Hadfield). EDFL Media Says: Percentage was the only thing keeping Coburg Districts out of the finals after a one-point loss in their final home and away contest. Tom Gleeson has moved on and Charlie Denaro will aim to give the senior side a bit of a refresh with some new faces and approaches – something that was perhaps due. It'll be tough for Districts to move up considering the strength of the competition, but they always seem to find a way to be in the mix. Out: Tim Stephens (Williamstown Superules), Brad Kite (Glenroy), Aaron Kite (Glenroy), Jaymee Guy (Lara), Joshua Gray (Lara), Ash Millane (Romsey), Jack Weiley (Diggers Rest) & Shylo Smith (Diggers Rest). EDFL Media Says: New coach Travis Bishop is well aware that Rome wasn't built in a day and I don't think anyone is expecting fireworks from East Sunbury in 2024. Division Two will again look like a strong, deep competition which will make a steep rise for the Thunder difficult, but we do expect them to taste some success on field to ensure gradual improvement for the club. 2023: 12th, Division One, (1W, 17L, 41.27%) Out: Jonty Neaves (Eaglehawk), Marcel Hamoud (Newport), John Mona (Parkside), Ali Ahmad (Watsonia), Julian Mosarevski (Spotswood), Lucas Kyriazis (Parkside), Lachlan O'Connor (East Malvern), Logan Berryman (East Malvern), Samuel Gewargis (Watsonia), Paul Pascu (Oak Park), Joshua Ksiazek (Oak Park), Athyen Kyriazis (Coburg Districts), Houssam Moslimani (Northern Saints), Daniel Moro (Hadfield), Matt Shannon (Southport) & Adam Jackson-Kiss (Highett). Out: Ethan Hope (Lalor), Imran Noureddine (Northern Saints), Joshua Marino (Girgarre), Thomas McIntosh (Sunshine), Adrian Sabatino (Glenroy), Liam Burgess (Oak Park), Yusuf Abdullatif (Northern Saints), Tarkan Yilmaz (Airport West), Ibrahim Hammoud (Glenroy), Patrick Worden (Fitzroy Stars) & Andrew Trende (Seaford). EDFL Media Says: Angelo Lamanna has introduced a smattering of players to Hadfield,  attracting a number of players external to the EDFL as they build the depth in the list they were lacking in 2023, while also adding some high-quality players. It won't be easy for them to push up the ladder given the competition around them, but they'll certainly be confident in a more competitive season. In: Bernardo Tenace (Taylors Lakes), Abdullah El-Rafei (Pascoe Vale), Riley Houston (Greenvale), Imran Noureddine (Hadfield), Oliver Klemm (Tullamarine), Houssam Moslimani (Glenroy), Joseph MacCarone (Roxburgh Park), Stefan Valensisi (Pascoe Vale), Joseph Rahme (Strathmore), Thomas Mendico (Barooga), Yusuf Abdullatif (Hadfield), Musa Hussain (Airport West), Abdul Rahman Eless (North Sunshine) & Eren Genc (Taylors Lakes). EDFL Media Says: Northern Saints are establishing themselves as a genuine flag contender in 2024 after a strong resurgence under Tamer Abdallah in 2023. He will again lead the Saints who were active in the off-season retaining a lot of key players and attracting some best-22 players. They've also regained homegrown juniors which is a great sign for the club. In: Trent Cranwell (Sunbury), Riley Eales (Sunbury), Thomas Eiszele (Riddell), Brandon Smith (Coomera), Rocco Tripodi (Avondale Heights), Benjamin Cannon (Rupertswood), Andrew Siekai (Maryborough Giants), Mitch Collins (Wandella), Cooper Anson (Jabiru), Timothy Walsh (Gisborne), Nicholas Agnello (Rupertswood), Ethan McDonald (Sunbury), Jake Olivieri (Avondale Heights), Riley Hardiman (East Keilor), Tyler Morton (Rupertswood) & Yasin Erdem (Roxburgh Park). EDFL Media Says: After a remarkable second half of 2023, Sunbury Kangaroos enter 2024 as one of the sides touted to be heading back into Division One. They've lost a couple of handy players but have also brought in a swathe of quality to add to a well-retained list. The Kangaroos should certainly be in the mix for a double chance come the end of the season as they look to go one better than 2023, and they'll be in for a hard contest when they face Taylors Lakes in Round 1. In: Lachlan McMullin (Keilor), Ben Spargo (Keilor), Brandon Raad (Airport West), Yanni Apostolidis (Caroline Springs), Connor Roach (North Footscray), Declan Wakefield (North Footscray), Ben Weightman (Mount Pleasant), Vincent Schiavello (Keilor Park), Shaun Ujcich (North Footscray), Matt Brown (Keilor Park), Joel Sposato (Hillside Superules), Nathanael Smith (Keilor Park), Michael Di Pietro (Western Saints Superules), Dylan Birdo (Tullamarine) & Joseph Girgis (Westbourne). EDFL Media Says: It was a tough season for Westmeadows who had to contend with a mass exodus from their semi final side of 2022, but the young group showed some positive signs to finish the season. The Tigers were a fighting chance of avoiding relegation, but they'll feel renewed in Division Two with a chance to regain some on-field success. They'll be similarly unpredictable early on like Glenroy which could play into their favour. Burnside Heights is one win away from a fairy tale first season in the Essendon District Football League Women’s competition. The Bears did not expect to be among the top teams, let alone in a grand final as more than half their team has never played before. But with just one loss for the season, that is exactly where they find themselves this weekend. Bears president Justin Peagram said they could not have predicted the season they have had. “We’ve got a lot of quality players, but over half the team is made up of novices,” he said. “I don’t think we get enough credit. Everyone has played their role and it’s blown us away. “We thought we would win a couple of games.” The Bears won through to the grand final with a hard-fought win against Westmeadows on Sunday. In a low scoring game, the Bears prevailed with 3.6 (24)-3.4 (4) 22. Peagram said a tricky wind made it difficult for both teams to score. He said while it was pretty close all day, he thought they were in control of the game. “Westmeadows had an outstanding game,” he said. “They had two or three back when we had the wind and made it hard to get the forward structure. “It was a dog fight until the end. We were always probably going to win, but they made it uncomfortable.” Peagram said it was an even contribution from the side. He said Sina Mason, Allison Chivell, Laycee Eustace, Kayla Ravanello, Krissy Tran and Ebony Stevens all contributed at key moments. Peagram said he hoped winning the preliminary final would add to their momentum. Between byes and forfeits, the Bears have struggled with consistency. “We haven’t had enough games under the belt,” he said. “The second half of both finals, our ball movement has been better. We started to get the mojo together and played well.” The Bears face Pascoe Vale in the grand final on Sunday at Windy Hill. Pascoe Vale defeated Sunbury Kangaroos, 6.11 (47)-0.1 (1) in the other preliminary final. The Bears’ only loss of the season came against the Panthers, by 13 points. “The girls are champing at the bit and really eager for the game,” Peagram said. “Pascoe Vale will be front runners, but grand finals are funny things.” It was a good weekend for the Bears as their under-13 boys claimed the premiership in their division. The senior men defeated Coburg Districts, 17.10 (112)-15.15 (105). In division 1, Hillside replaced Taylors Lakes in the top four after defeating Jacana, 16.13 (109)-9.7 (61). As a result Taylors Lakes may miss the finals, as they are one game and a lot of percentage outside the top three. Keilor is on top in premier division, after beating Maribyrnong Park 14.14 (98)-9.8 (62). “It’s wonderful to have the Toyota Good For Footy Gear Grants program back for another year and see the impact it has within community football to ensure more women and girls feel comfortable playing our great game.” The Toyota Good For Footy Round will kick off at the MCG for the Round 2 match between Carlton and Collingwood on Thursday March 25 and conclude on Sunday March 28. charged with murder over the stabbing of Melbourne teenNine boys have been charged with murder over the stabbing death of struggling Burnside Heights unit in the off season The move has seen his game go to another level – he has kicked 54 goals and is only behind former AFL player Cameron Cloke That tally places him among the top goalkickers in senior competitions in metro Melbourne this year Covelli has backed his belief he could compete at a senior level so the rise of the former backman isn’t a complete surprise “I played full-back until under-16s,” he said “I started playing forward with school footy “Last season I started playing well in the reserves and I got given a good opportunity from the coaches to play senior football.” The decision to move to the Bears was surprising I got talking to the postman who would come in,” he said He’s the father of a player at Burnside and he told me things were looking up at the club “I came down to the club to have a look and fell in love with the place I’d played most of my juniors at Moonee Valley … it’s always good to have a new challenge “I’ve fallen in love with the club and can’t see myself going elsewhere.” The move to the Bears has meant a couple of different challenges for Covelli He’s the face of a club that is on the rise and he’s taken on more of a leadership role as the players develop “I’d never been in the leadership group,” he said “I used to always rock up just before the game and leave straight after and not take any responsibility It’s good to have that extra responsibility and help the younger players.” The Bears have already won two more games than they did last season and Covelli is excited by what they can do in the future “I get the easy job finishing off all the hard work done by the others,” he said “I don’t kick goals if the others don’t get the ball down to me The coach [Aidan Stott] has got the forward line working really well “The president has put together a really good group.” An exciting young list attracted new Burnside Heights coach Cole Harvey to the Essendon District Football League division 2 club The Bears announced this week that Harvey would coach the side for at least the next two seasons Harvey comes into the role having long been involved at Hillside as a football manager He this year coached the club’s under-18.5s to the division 1 premiership He’s also part of the Calder Cannons coaching staff and the EDFL interleague program Harvey said he was keen for the opportunity at the Bears “I’ve coached a lot of junior football and under age footy,” he said “I want to go and see what it takes to coach at a senior level My phone has gone into meltdown following the announcement.” Harvey said he had always wanted to coach senior football and this seemed like the perfect fit His mate had moved across to the club last year as a strength and conditioning coach which gave him an idea of the club “I met with Justin [Pegram] and the committee and it felt pretty good,” he said “They’ve made a pretty substantial strategic plan of what they want to do and where they want to go Their main goal is to progress out of division 2.” One of the biggest things that attracted Harvey to the role was the young talent within the club The Bears had nine players under the age of 22 in their side that lost to Coburg Districts in a semi final Harvey said while the club wants to move up divisions they wanted to do it the right way to have sustained success I can coach to develop them and educate them,” he said “Most of them are sticking around and hopefully we’ll get some more younger guys to come in and play senior football “We’ve got some good young talent and we want to get games into them When we do go up we want to be on low player points and be able to sustain being in that division.” Harvey said while they had a young group there were still a number of experienced players in the team They will be boosted by the return of former captain Nick Morda Jordan Hughes and Liam Mercieca would be back Harvey said he couldn’t wait to get down to business.
