Not even former Broncos stars Sam Thaiday, Josh Hoffman or Korbin Sims lining up for Wests Arana Hills Panthers, could stop the Burpengary Jets from hoisting the Rugby League Brisbane Open 1 premiership trophy at Emerson Park. The Jets, who won the grand final 24-18, had claimed the minor premiership and gone through the season undefeated, boasting their own handful of former NRL and Hostplus Cup talent including Liam Georgetown, Chris Aiton and Luke Capewell. The looming Riverfire in Brisbane was definitely an omen for Burpengary, with jets soaring above the ground as the players ran out onto the field, giving it that special touch. However, it would be the Panthers to post first points of the afternoon in the tenth minute through former New Zealand international Josh Hoffman, who chimed into the West Arana Hills backline from fullback, to slide his way over the line. In what was a no holds barred first 20 minutes, both sides bone rattling defence saw many players left bruised and battered from the carnage that followed. The Jets were next to score through some slick hands along their backline that found winger Nathan Tunufai. The speedster had some work to do before touching down inches from the sideline to get Burpengary on the board. Man of the match Luke Capewell had the ball on a string in this game and his NRL experience shone through. A beautiful pass to send Jonathon Fatamai crashing his way over to score beside the sticks was poetry in motion. Panthers forwards Thaiday and Korbin Sims certainly made their presence known in the defensive department and a series of bone crunching tackles certainly rattled a few of the Jets cages. However, Capewell’s vision and ability to turn a game on its head certainly took centre stage with the Jets next try. A superb step and chip over the top of fullback Hoffman found Liam Georgetown in support and the former Redcliffe Dolphins gun regathered the ball to score what was the try of the match in the 30th minute. But just as the Panthers looked like making a heroic comeback through their dynamic hooker in Jack Walters - son of Broncos coach Kevin - a dropped ball ensued a scrum 30m out from the Panthers line. The next set saw Jets hooker Chris Aiton slip a neat pass to Capewell and it was only fitting the best player on the park was rewarded with a meat pie to go into the sheds leading 18-6. With Arana Hills regrouping after the break, veteran Thaiday got the Panthers back in the game when he threw a short pass to second rower Callum Stewart, who crashed over out wide. Not three minutes later, Hoffman (pictured above) made a dazzling midfield break and he was able to draw the Jets fullback and find Connor Claridge in support, who crossed beside the posts to level it all up at 18-18. But the best was yet to come for the Jets supporters. With only a minute left on the clock, fullback Inga Limoni’s 70m intercept try had everybody out of their seats and cheering him on. The flashy fullback raced away untouched to score under the black dot and see Burpengary clinch victory in what was a fantastic finish to an epic grand final. In the under 19s grand final, Brighton Roosters' Tyler Wilshere starred in his team’s 28-24 victory over Samford Stags that saw the brilliant halfback bag a try and kick four goals in oppressive heat, taking the trophy back to Jim Lawrie Oval. In the Open 3 North grand final, a penalty goal in extra time saw Burpengary Jets take the spoils 30-28, in what was an incredible finish to an entertaining game. Jets captain Anthony Brown was phenomenal for his side, whilst the Kangaroos' Viki Nati paved the way for North Lakes to get oh so close. In the Open 2 North grand Final, having trailed the entire match, Moreton Bay Raiders hero Luke Sketchley scored on the bell to win 24-18 and snatch victory away from Brisbane Natives in what was a pulsating end to a great game of rugby league. Down at Logan Metro Sports Complex, Greenbank Raiders took home the Open 3 South title with a 24-22 win over Brothers St Brendan's, while Souths Sunnybank cruised to a 44-10 victory over Forest Lake in the Open 2 South decider on the back of a hat-trick to Zachery Masterson. Police have charged a 26-year-old Beachmere man after the death of a 74-year-old man and the serious injury of a woman at Burpengary East on Thursday. The man has been charged with one count of murder, and one count of attempted murder. He was refused police bail and is due to appear in Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on Friday. The man, who was arrested at the Burpengary East property where police found the body of the elderly man, had been doing gardening work before an altercation broke out, detectives believe. Officers launched a homicide investigation after they conducted a welfare check at the property on Bramston Court, north of Brisbane, about 9.20am. Detective Inspector David Harbison said officers found a man in his 70s dead at the scene, and a severely injured woman, also aged in her 70s, with significant trauma to her head. “It is understood from the early investigation that the 26-year-old male person was on and about these premises here conducting some gardening work,” Harbison said. “A dispute of some type has broken out and an altercation and unfortunately the victims have been severely injured, one fatally.” Police investigate at the Burpengary East crime scene where an elderly man was killed and a woman severely injured.Credit: Nine News He said detectives did not believe the man was known to the victims, and stressed it was not a domestic violence incident. Detectives believed the man had never worked at the property before, had been dropped off by friends and had been working alone. When asked what the 26-year-old was doing when police arrived, Harbison answered: “He was just going about his business, just routinely, he stayed on site and waited for police arrival.” Harbison said police were still unsure what had caused the dispute, but a witness had reported the altercation to police. Detective Inspector David Harbison speaks to journalists after police found an elderly man’s body and a seriously injured woman during a welfare check.Credit: QPS He said the witness was devastated, and the scene was traumatic, including for first responders. The woman was rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a serious condition, where she remained undergoing treatment. Neighbour Douglas Hutchings told Nine News he helped the woman into an ambulance. “I just helped a woman that was in distress. She looked very out of it ... I just helped the police officers and the ambulance officers put her on a gurney and put her in the ambulance,” Hutchings said. Police were still investigating if weapons were used. Harbison would not elaborate on whether anything had been seized from property. He would not be drawn on questions of whether the man, who was arrested uninjured and without incident, had attempted to alter anything at the scene. Part of the police investigation would include speaking with the man’s friends, Harbison said. The man had also been doing gardening work at another property. “This is a nice quiet area, so it’s a confronting scene to be met by attending a welfare call without the full information and this rolls out in front of you and unfortunately this is policing and this is happening too often,” he said. Police said two men who lived in the complex tried to rescue him.  "They've bravely smashed windows and attempted to open a door," Detective Inspector David Harbison said. Emergency services were called at about 9pm amid reports of a fire in one of units, believed to have started at the back of the home.  An 83-year-old man is believed to have died in the fire.  (ABC News) Police are yet to formally identify the victim and the fire is not being treated as suspicious, Inspector Harbison said. "The fire was that intense, a number of surrounding homes have actually been scorched by heat and hit with debris," Inspector Harbison said. "Anything in the immediate surrounding was somewhat affected by the fire." Police are yet to determine the cause of the fire, which destroyed two homes.  (ABC News) Neighbour John Hood said the flames were several storeys high.  He said he knew the man who died, and that he would often serve lunch on Sundays.  "Apart from being a friend, he was a true gentleman," Mr Hood said.  Cynthia Brackin lived in the same retirement village as the man who died. (ABC News) Cynthia Brackin said he was "always down at the clubhouse".  "We've had dinners and things and I think he was also helping on the committee for the village," she said. "It is a bit hard for all of us that knew him." Investigations into what caused the fire continue.  Detective Inspector David Harbison is asked how people are feeling after the fire. "All very sad, it's a small community. A lot of them to talk to each other every day so it's a sense of grief in this small little area here." And that's where we'll wrap up our live coverage. With a healthy crowd on hand at the Burpengary Sports Ground, Georgetown’s experience with Redcliffe Dolphins was the catalyst that sent the Panthers home with their tail between their legs in the one-sided affair. It would be Georgetown who would get the first points of the afternoon under way in the third minute of play, chiming onto a well delivered pass by Oakley Pakeho, who sent the one-time Penrith Panther under the sticks. With a host of former Redcliffe players - most of the team having played Colts together - in the Jets side, it would be another former NRL player who set up their next try. Former Rabbitohs, Titans and Broncos half Luke Capewell’s superb cut out pass to centre Roddy Faaapito sent the powerful centre over to further increase the scoreline. While the Panthers were trying their best to contain the Jets big men in Junior Peni, Misi Pauga and Drae Aiono, it set the tone for the Jets next try when Capewell burst through a yawning gap to slide in under the posts. The Panthers were trying hard in gaining momentum; however, it was Georgetown tearing the Panthers to shreds on the fringes that saw the five eighth crossed for his second of the afternoon going in untouched under the sticks. Some patchy flashes of brilliance by Panthers' Jake Morris had the visitors breathing some new life, however the nightmare continued when in the 29th minute, Georgetown lobbed a pass over the top to his winger Corey Gardiner who crashed over in the corner. With a minute left on the clock in the first half, the Panthers did finally get on the scoreboard when five-eighth Morris stepped his way through the Jets monster forward pack, to touch down out wide. With the resumption of the second half, it didn’t take the Jets long to continue their trsycoring onslaught. Faapito was proving to be a handful in the centres for the Panthers defence and he made them pay in the 44th minute selling a dummy to go in extending the Jets lead 38-6. To their credit, the Panthers forwards never gave up. Ryan Herdson and captain Zac Ryan were outstanding in a losing side tackling anything that came their way. However, you just cannot beat experience and with the Liam Georgetown show still in full effect, he crossed yet again for another superb try to complete his hat-trick blitzing the defence to go in untouched under the sticks. Whilst the Jets big men were tiring at the back end of the game, the Panthers seized the moment for two late tries through captain Ryan and Reys Tiddy, who added some respectability to the scoreline. Burpengary did have the last say however when Masae Coutts strolled in for the easiest tries to round off what was a dominant display. The win moved Burpengary into fifth place on the ladder in the 10-team competition. The Jets play away to Pine Central Holy Spirit this Saturday, while Wests Mitchelton will look to climb off the bottom of the ladder at home to Brisbane Natives.
