The Burwood East building home to a repository of National Archives of Australia has come to market
Melbourne’s wealthy Dorman family are selling the Burwood East home of the National Archives of Australia (NAA) for more than $30m
Records that date back to 1839 are kept in the archives of the repository
The building at 31 Vision Drive has been leased by the NAA for about 30 years
and they have just signed on for another five years with the option to extend

The Dorman family are selling the property

to redirect funds back into their development pipeline and invest in new projects
“31 Vision has been a tremendously reliable set and forget investment; however

CBRE senior director Scott Orchard said the investment was like a government bond because the Commonwealth lease — one of the most sought-after by investors — was supported by high underlying land value
“It’s an asset of national significance so I think it could attract a large variety of buyer interest,” Mr Orchard said

It’s a new dawn for East Burwood as the club will take on 2025 with a new senior coach
it’s a familiar feeling at East Burwood Reserve as the club welcomes its fourth senior head coach in the last four years
Rams fans will be filled with hope ahead of the new season
senior player and senior captain Kyle Dove has hung up the boots and will take the reigns of the club he’s spent his life at
“It’s just been really exciting to work with players that obviously I’m very familiar with and have spent time playing with,” said Dove
The first-time head coach will work with many of his former teammates as he looks to take East Burwood further up the ladder in 2025
Among these are Lachy Jose (seven times in best) and Marcus Young (twelve goals)
as last season’s leading goal kicker has returned to Templestowe over the off-season
Dove is insistent that Mariani’s departure is an exception to the norm
“The most pleasing thing is being able to hold onto our core,” said Dove
“We’ve only lost a couple players… we’ve been able to retain probably 95% of our list.”
East Burwood struggled with consistency last season
finishing just two places off the bottom of the table
Head coach Dove is looking to take some strides in the off-season but understands that too much change is not always a good thing
“It’s important not to make massive overriding changes,” said Dove
“We’ve obviously built this year around where we saw a few patches in our game last year
“[The changes] have been pretty minor in terms of introducing little nuances in our game that I think will hold us in really good stead
“We’re going to play a really exciting brand of footy.”
The Rams had to wait until Round 5 to pick up their first win in 2024
those at East Burwood Reserve are adamant on opening their account much earlier on this time around
“We’ve already spoken about wanting to hit Round 1 in full stride,” said coach Dove
“Really honing in on our craft and knowing our role and being able to execute… we don’t want to be hitting Round 1 and still be finding out a little bit about how we want to play and our brand.”
East Burwood will travel to Central Reserve in Round One to take on Waverley Blues

two teenage girls are under arrest and up to four males are on the run after an allegedly stolen car crashed into another vehicle in Melbourne’s east

Police said the Jeep was travelling fast and erratically
The driver and sole occupant of the second vehicle
There were up to six teenagers in the Jeep
Two 15-year-old girls were arrested as they allegedly tried to run away
Police described the decision of the occupants to flee and leave a dying man as “absolutely cowardly”
They know someone would have been hurt in that vehicle ..
to leave a person either injured or killed is cowardly; it’s absolutely cowardly,” Detective Senior Sergeant Christian Von Tunk said
The Jeep was said to have been stolen during an aggravated home burglary in Cranbourne South last week before being used in two armed robberies in Ormond and Ripponlea on June 30
It is unclear whether the teenagers in the crash were involved in any of the earlier crimes
Police said they had funnelled a lot of resources into tracking down the males who were in the crash vehicle and warned their friends and family to urge them to come forward
“Anyone known to the people in that vehicle
if you know those people tell them to come forward to the police
We want to speak to those people,” Von Tunk said

The teenage girls are known to police and were taken to hospital under police guard before being released from hospital and taken into custody
Government minister Harriet Shing said the collision was devastating and asked anyone who had information to come forward
“We want to make sure that we are able to understand what happened,” she said
“We have the lowest youth offending rate in Australia

Child and youth crime has continued to rise in Victoria over the past year
according to figures released by the Crime Statistics Agency in June
The number of offenders in the 15-to-17 age group in the 12-month period rose by almost 25 per cent to 15,495
a core group of repeat offenders committed more serious and violent crimes
predominantly in the eastern and outer-southeastern suburbs

Burwood in Melbourne’s east is well known for its local schools
great parks and Deakin University’s largest campus - making it a great place to live
Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East will deliver a metro rail line and underground station to this area for the very first time
making it easier for the 26,000 students and 1500 staff who travel to the university every day
Close to the university is Gardiners Creek (KooyongKoot) trail
a cycling and walking track extending 20km from Blackburn Road through to Main Yarra Trail
Let’s look at this growing suburb and its bright future
Burwood | 1-minute walk from Deakin University
221 Burwood Highway | 1-minute walk from Deakin University tram stop 63
15 Sinnott Street | 13-minute walk from Deakin University
Lundgren Chain Reserve Playground | 2-minute walk from Goold St/Station St bus stop
Burwood East | 6-minute walk from Middleborough Rd/Burwood Highway tram stop
'I’ve been in Burwood all my life - 23 years - and working in Burwood is just fantastic
it’s going to be fantastic for SRL to have that connectivity between lots of different suburbs.'
'Deakin University is a great place to be and is part of the reason why I’ve been here for the past 20 years or so
The atmosphere and students’ vibrancy - you can really feel the excitement around the area
SRL will make access to campus a lot better.'

I think SRL will open up more suburbs that we can feasibly live in as we manage our life between home and work.'
'Burwood has been very good to myself and family
Public transport has to become more available
It will make this centre more available to all the community.'
Burwood will flourish as an easily accessible centre for education based around Deakin University and top-class schools when SRL East opens by 2035
SRL will provide a train connection to the doorstep of the university campus
slashing travel times and providing faster and more convenient public transport to schools and universities
A journey between Glen Waverley and Deakin University will take just 5 minutes
The new underground station at Burwood will have 2 levels and be fully accessible for all passengers via lifts and escalators
New bus and tram stops will be built right outside the station
and a pedestrian overpass across Burwood Highway will provide a safe and easy connection between the station and Deakin University
as well as links to Gardiners Creek trail and nearby schools
The station will include pick up and drop off areas
taxi bays and up to 750 bicycle parking spaces
Jobs in the area are expected to more than double to 24,000 when SRL East and SRL North are built
with more opportunities for local businesses and for more diverse housing in the broader neighbourhood

Victoria’s pandemic-era tree change revolution has been given the chop
with new property settlements data showing a surge in Melbourne’s suburbs while regional numbers plunge
Australia’s primary digital property exchange platform
show the state’s homebuyers splashed an eye-watering $142bn buying more than 170,000 homes across the state in the past year
Melbourne was home to Australia’s three most-transacted postcodes
with Tarneit in the city’s west topping the list at 5906 settlements in the 2024 financial year

Melbourne and its fringes dominated the state’s list of biggest increases in settlements
with the city’s south eastern fringe at Nar Nar Goon surging 354 per cent and Coldstream on the city’s outskirts rising 116 per cent
Oakleigh South and Brunswick East were also in the top 10 statewide
with sale completions rising anywhere from 75 per cent to 106 per cent
Meanwhile the suburbs with the biggest reductions in settlements centred on many of the tree-change areas that gained popularity during lockdowns
Lethbridge had one of the biggest drops in sales numbers over the past financial year
but 72 Sutherland St was among the homes that still inked a deal
Lethbridge near Geelong was down 56 per cent
Mortlake in the state’s west had a 55 per cent fall in transactions and New Gisborne
Postcodes just outside of the city’s urban fringe including Garfield were also in the top 10 for sharpest declines over the past financial year
but had recorded rises during the pandemic
PEXA chief economist Julie Toth said the tree-change trend of the Covid era appeared to be in reverse
with metropolitan Melbourne’s settlement numbers rising 8.6 per cent at the same time as the numbers fell 5.9 per cent in regional Victoria
and contrasts with a lower number of sales in regional areas,” Ms Toth said
“But they are coming off a couple of big boom years when they had quite high numbers during the pandemic.”
A future new housing haunt in Melbourne’s south east
Nar Nar Goon recorded Victoria’s largest increase in sales numbers by percentage — with 4-6 Racecourse Rd among them
The economist added that those on the hunt for an affordable home should also take note of the big sales numbers in Tarneit
“Those suburbs with the big sales numbers are the growth areas for affordable housing and new household formation,” she said
“This is where supply is greatest at the moment.”

The rooftop of a shopping centre in suburban Melbourne is not the most obvious site for an edible garden and cafe
but that’s what makes Burwood Brickworks’ 2500-square-metre urban farm and eatery all the more special
The project is an extension of the shopping centre’s sustainability ethos and a chance for guests to immerse themselves in an urban green space in an unlikely setting
it’s always hustle-bustle and this is one of those places where you can really go to escape that,” centre manager Robert Breda tells Broadsheet

The garden is managed by Cultivating Community
an organisation focused on community gardening that provides employment and social connection for culturally and linguistically diverse communities and those who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing
The garden primarily coexists alongside Rombe without much crossover

The VicRoads building in Burwood East has sold
IN A record sale for Burwood East’s Tally-Ho business park
an office building has sold for $25.5 million to a first-time investor in Melbourne’s commercial market
which was purpose-built for VicRoads in 1996
fought off six other offers to snap up the building owned by Yulgilbar Custodians and Myer Family Investments
The sale represented a benchmark building rate of $5655 per square metre for the park
which is more than 41 per cent higher than the average of the last three transactions
CBRE’s Scott Orchard said the expressions of interest campaign attracted seven offers from local and offshore investors and developers
He said the competitive campaign was due to the high demand for office buildings in the area
“We’ve always had the belief that such properties would have a good outcome in this area,” Mr Orchard said
“There’s a healthy appetite for these kinds of buildings in Burwood East
but there’s only a handful of them available
VicRoads recently committed to a new three-year lease at the building to mid-2021
Burwood One shopping centre sold for more than $180 million
An international investor has splashed more the $180 million on the Burwood One shopping centre
The Burwood East complex on the prominent corner of Burwood Hwy and Blackburn Rd was snapped up by a Melbourne-based buyer from Hong Kong
the shopping centre is home to Australia’s oldest Kmart store which opened in 1969
The site at 172-210 Burwood Hwy is home to Australia’s oldest Kmart
The 58,780sq m site had been expected to fetch up to $200 million
CBRE national director Mark Wizel said the mega deal was a record for a suburban shopping centre
when the income it generated was stacked up against its sale price
“The buyer that has acquired Burwood One did so accepting a return of about 5 per cent annually,” he said
“The return is the lowest ever recorded for a shopping centre of a subregional nature.”
Mr Wizel said this meant the buyer had paid top dollar for the shopping centre
which they saw as a “generational investment”
CBRE state director for Victorian retail investments Justin Dowers said it was also a record sale for a shopping centre in Australia owned by just one family
The shopping centre had an estimated net income of more than $9.5 million a year and a zero vacancy rate
Australia’s first Kmart store in Burwood East in 1969
CBRE said the centre had the strongest trading Kmart and Coles combination in Australia
with the retail giants signed to 21- and 20-year leases respectively
The popular complex also includes Coles and Aldi supermarkets
Mr Wizel said he was blown away by the interest the shopping centre attracted during the sales campaign
“Those at the pointy end of the process included Australian-based institutions as well as several private buyers who sourced their capital out of Asia,” he said
The complex first hit the market in July and secured a sale last week during the second round of the international expressions of interest process
has been labelled the suburb’s best and sold $412,000 above its reserve at auction yesterday
The “best house in Burwood East” has earned its vendors a tidy $500,000 in four years after it sold today
The house at 22 Davis St sold for $2.362m in a heated auction with nine bidders
Fletchers auctioneer Steven Zervas said he had sold it to the vendors for $1.86m “brand new” four years ago
and they had been hoping for $1.95m on Saturday – putting them a hefty $412,000 above expectations

The final five blocks of land at Villawood Properties’ Aquarevo estate in Lyndhurst also went under the hammer online
and with 66 bidders active all sold between $76,000 and $172,000 more than their reserve price
While the blocks had been expected to sell from $439,000 to $614,000
The Aquarevo estate is one of Melbourne’s most sustainable and the five lots were part of its Ecorevo precinct
where buyers must build at least a seven-star energy-rated home

CERYS AP REES: Yeah, we've got a communal hub up here, which is just members of the local community can literally come up, pick some salad greens for their dinner and walk back home. Like, it's awesome! It's amazing! I wish this was in every single community.
COSTA GEORGIADIS: Cerys works for Cultivating Community, the organisation tasked with running this farm, but she also works in community gardens all over Melbourne. The name 'Cultivating Community' suggests that you're growing a lot more than just vegies here on the rooftop.
CERYS AP REES: Building community! It's amazing! So, one of our big things is working with culturally and linguistically diverse people. We run our Hear Me See Me Employ Me program out of here, which is a beautiful partnership we've got with Victorian College For The Deaf, and it's a work-experience program.
COSTA GEORGIADIS: Hear Me See Me Employ Me gives young people who are deaf and hard of hearing a chance to learn gardening skills during an internship while they're still at school, then apply for jobs as paid maintenance gardeners. Two of the program's recent graduates, Musti and Wisnu, are now employed to help keep the farm cranking out produce. So, what are we harvesting here today?
ANAK WISNU: We're harvesting zucchini today, and we...
COSTA GEORGIADIS: Yeah, how did he actually sign 'zucchini'?
ANAK WISNU: It's Z and also the shape of the vegetable as well.
COSTA GEORGIADIS: So, sort of like Z, tube.
COSTA GEORGIADIS: Oh, here's one. What else are you harvesting up there, Musti?
COSTA GEORGIADIS: Oh, yeah. Nice. Redhead. Wiz, how did you get involved with the program?
ANAK WISNU: So, I started studying at VCD. Like, we learnt a few things like you normally do literacy and maths, that sort of a thing. And then I did a speciality course on Thursdays. Now I've graduated and I applied for a job and I've received one here, so, I'll be working as a casual next year, and I'll be working part-time, so, that's very exciting.
COSTA GEORGIADIS: Generally speaking, it's hard for young people to find their first job. Is it harder for young people who are deaf, do you think?
ANAK WISNU: Yeah, I do think so. I think when a hearing person goes for a job, they can communicate quite easily. But when a deaf person applies for a job, they need to book an interpreter, and they need to think of all of these additional barriers that they need to get through, so, yes. And it's giving me a lot of experience about the workplace and taught me a lot of different skills involved with irrigation and setting up a garden, also looking after the soil, all sorts of things.
COSTA GEORGIADIS: What are your favourite tools?
MUSTAFA OMAR: My favourite... ..broadforks, backpack spray.
COSTA GEORGIADIS: Do you like this type of work that you do on the farm?
MUSTAFA OMAR: Yes. It's because it is best work experience.
COSTA GEORGIADIS: Now, this is your first job. Is it a forever job?
MUSTAFA OMAR: No, it was short... ..short time. And I want to... ..to be a barber.
CERYS AP REES :The opportunity. You know, that's what I believe this program offers. It's an opportunity for deaf and hard-of-hearing people to build their employability skills and then take it off to work in other organisations, or maybe even with us, who knows?
COSTA GEORGIADIS: So, where does all this incredible produce that you're growing here end up?
CERYS AP REES: So, everything here goes into our food-insecurity projects that we run as an organisation. Local community groups can get accessible produce, and then they either give it away for free or charge community a gold-coin donation, which is amazing. It gets into the hands of people that need it, which is just the perfect outcome.
On the rooftop of a suburban shopping centre in Burwood, east Melbourne, is a surprise feature – a highly productive community garden.
The garden is run by a group called Cultivating Community, and organiser Cerys ap Rees says they aim to include people from culturally and linguistically diverse groups.
There is an employment program run in partnership with the Victorian College for the Deaf, providing work experience opportunities for those with hearing disabilities.
Called “Hear Me, See Me, Employ Me”, it offers internship placements for high school children with hearing issues. Two recent graduates are now employed as paid maintenance gardeners at the community garden.
With the help of an interpreter, graduates Anak Wisnu and Mustafa Omar tell Costa what they enjoy about the job.
The students learn about irrigation, setting up a garden plot, looking after the soil, as well as the different crops they grow and protecting them from pests.
Whether graduates plan to stay in gardening or not, the program offers students a break to get their first job, learn basic employment skills – turning up on time, getting on with others – and build self confidence.
The produce grown at the garden goes to food insecurity programs that is then given away or sold for a gold-coin donation.

The co-star of the upcoming Liam Neeson-led blockbuster inked the deal at auction on May 9.
The Burwood East house, which he and his wife Sonya offered up, fetched $1.42 million after a campaign handled by Jellis Craig’s Stephen Le Get and Andrew Shen.
Nestled in a quiet court, which backs onto green Holland Gully, the house spans four bedrooms and has the bonus of a pool.
The bathrooms and kitchen have been modernised in a style that marries with the decades-old flourishes through the rest of the house, including an open fire, sliding French doors and vast banks of windows.
Access to the park through the garden is a surprise extra for families.
Burwood East’s median house price stands at $1.3 million, which is an bump of more than 4 per cent over 12 months and 30 per cent over five years.

Curry is shooting the sequel to 2021 action film Ice Road, with Neeson. The actors filmed scenes earlier this year around Gippsland in country Victoria, and Melbourne’s Docklands studios, under director Jonathan Hensleigh. The movie, The Ice Road 2: Road To The Sky , is a follow-up to the indie hit, with Neeson reprising his role.
Curry, 50, was raised in Melbourne and is much loved for his roles as Jake Stewart in Wentworth, Luke Handley in Neighbours and Hugo Austin in Home and Away. He has also starred in Halifax f.p, Savage River and Blue Heelers.
His filmography includes Working Dogs’ nostalgia trip The Dish.
The Burwood East sale contributed to a weekend clearance rate in Melbourne of 61 per cent.

The Burwood East complex on the prominent corner of Burwood Hwy and Blackburn Rd was snapped up by a Melbourne-based buyer from Hong Kong
The 58,780sqm site had been expected to fetch up to $200 million
CBRE national director Mark Wizel says the mega deal was a record for a suburban shopping centre
The Burwood One shopping centre in Melbourne sold for $180 million
“The buyer that has acquired Burwood One did so accepting a return of about 5% annually,” he said
“The return is the lowest ever recorded for a shopping centre of a subregional nature.”
Wizel says this meant the buyer has paid top dollar for the shopping centre
which they see as a “generational investment”
CBRE state director for Victorian retail investments Justin Dowers says it is also a record sale for a shopping centre in Australia owned by just one family
CBRE says the centre has the strongest trading Kmart and Coles combination in Australia
Wizel says he was blown away by the interest the shopping centre attracted during the sales campaign
“Those at the pointy end of the process included Australian-based institutions as well as several private buyers who sourced their capital out of Asia,” he says

TE paid Kador $18.1m for the Burwood East asset – a deal which reflected a high 9.38pc yield
indicative of the short Weighted Average Lease Expiry at the time (just over two years)
It was offered this time around following a 10 year commitment to the anchor tenant; the WALE was 9.25 years
“This transaction reinforces market demand for quality office assets in up-and-coming regional office hubs and is consistent with our strategy of divesting non-core assets” TE managing director Emilia Teo said

James Russouw was stabbed and his car set on fire in 2008
Link copiedShareShare articleA Melbourne man who stabbed his mate in the neck and set his body on fire has been found guilty of murder nine years after the crime
The jury also returned a not guilty verdict on a charge of incitement to murder
after it was alleged Lavery asked a fellow prisoner about getting a key witness in the case "knocked"
an audio engineering student and former high school captain
was found inside his torched Jeep beside a suburban sports oval at Burwood East
Lavery denied any connection with the crime
claiming that on the night Russouw was murdered he was at Forest Hill Chase cinema watching a movie with a friend
who initially substantiated Lavery's alibi
has since told police that the accused killer left the movie partway through after asking to swap clothes and did not return
Defence counsel Scott Johns argued the witness's revised account was untrue and was motivated by a $1 million reward advertised by Victoria Police.
Lavery told the jury he did "absolutely not" kill Russouw and had never confessed to the murder, as claimed by two witnesses.

Ryman Healthcare has opened its eighth Australian facility – also its fastest selling – on part of a former Melbourne brickworks
The John Flynn Retirement Village, in Burwood East
Adopting the group’s continuum of care model
which can follow a resident from independent to supported care in the one community
89 serviced apartments offering semi-support
The New Zealand listed Christchurch based group acquired the 2.5 hectare block which made way for the complex in 2016
paid Readings Cinemas $65m for the 20.5ha ex-brickworks two years earlier
The balance of the land has in recent years made way for hundreds of dwellings and an uber-green Woolworths anchored shopping centre
More than 200 guests including Ryman Group chief executive officer
attended a launch for the Burwood East village last week
At 6 Foundation Boulevard and 45 Burwood Highway
the John Flynn Retirement Village also includes a billiards room
Displayed memorabilia includes a wooden desk from which Mr Flynn drafted plans for the RFDS
promotional posters and a specifically commissioned rug featuring a De Havilland Dragon aircraft motif
Ryman Australia CEO Cameron Holland said though the permit was issued in 2019
construction “faced huge challenges outside of our control” during COVID
“It’s Ryman Australia’s fastest selling village,” according to the executive (story continues below)
It is also in the running for the ‘Best Retirement Living Development’ award at a Retirement Living Council annual event
was named a finalist in the ‘Facility of the Year (Ageing in Place)’ category of the Asia-Pacific Eldercare Innovation Awards
said his organisation and Ryman share the same mission

and that can only be achieved by building communities that bring people together,” he added
entered the Australian market a decade ago; it has so far only invested in Victoria
Its local development pipeline includes six more sites including Mt Eliza’s waterfront Moonah estate, the ex-St Mary’s Seminary in Mulgrave
“Ryman is no longer a New Zealand business operating in Australia
but a truly TransTasman organisation that embodies the very best of the Anzac spirit,” Mr Umbers said
“We have transitioned form being a new entrant and a disrupter to an established
with eight operational villages and six more in the development pipeline,” he added
The John Flynn Retirement Village opening comes nearly two years since Patti Newton opened the Bert Newton Retirement Village in Highett
The group also recently opened a facility in north west Aberfeldie
In early March, she returned and is now living in a new apartment at Burwood Brickworks.
“I wasn’t really planning on buying at the time, but it was too good to pass up,” she says.
“My daughters went to primary school in this area, so my core group of friends is here, and I thought: ‘This is where I’m growing old, so I want to grow old with my friends’.”
The 18-hectare master-planned development – on the site of a former brickworks dating back to the 1930s – is 19 kilometres from Melbourne’s city centre. It has 2.5 hectares of open space, a shopping centre with a cinema, a childcare centre and medical centre, plus a rooftop farm.
Welsh, whose apartment is just 50 metres from the shopping centre, said the conveniences are hard to beat.
“There are heaps of good restaurants at the Brickworks,” she says. “It’s a good area with a good community; everyone’s really friendly. I can’t go to the shops without running into someone I know.”
The Terrace Collection is the final apartment release at Burwood Brickworks. The six-level development comprises 135 one and two-bedroom apartments.
Positioned next to the Village Green, which makes up one hectare of the 2.5 hectares of open space throughout the development, it takes in views to the Dandenongs and the city.
The architecture is dominated by the use of fluted concrete and brickwork, most notably around the fireplaces.
The site’s history and the style of housing nearby played an influential role in the design, said Rothelowman architect Chris Hayton.
“In our research, we were quite inspired by some houses that have belonged in that part of Melbourne; their mid-century sensibilities,” he says. “There was a humility and strong sense of a humane approach to the architecture, and that honesty [is expressed simply] through the scale and through the building materials. They were a cue for us.
“Obviously, this is a building of a different time, but it just comes down to honesty and material expression.”
The apartment kitchens feature stone benchtops, full-height joinery and open shelving.
Buyers can choose between soft-grey or mid-grey colour schemes for a lighter or darker palette.
