Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) will shape the future liveability, productivity and connectivity of Melbourne. SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill will link major employment
education and retail destinations in Melbourne’s east and south east
The new rail line will reduce travel times and create up to 8000 direct local jobs during construction
A new underground station at Burwood will deliver a train line to the doorstep of one of Australia’s biggest universities for thousands of staff and students
and also to key destinations across Melbourne
A pedestrian overpass will be built across Burwood Highway
making the station easy and safe to access
and work will be undertaken to revitalise Gardiners Creek adjacent to the station area
The existing Sinnott Street Reserve at Burwood is required for the construction of SRL East (Cheltenham to Box Hill)
including the Burwood Skyline Drive-in playground and community barbeque facilities
will be closed so we can safely build the new underground station at Burwood
We understand the value of this reserve to the local community
which is why Suburban Rail Loop Authority (SRLA) has identified a nearby location next to an existing linear reserve
to provide a replacement park with modern recreational amenities
The replacement park will serve the community for up to 10 years while we deliver works in the area
Gathering feedback from the community helps us to understand what people value most in local public open space areas
we asked the community for their ideas for this replacement park including types of play equipment
recreational space or amenities such as seating
This feedback was captured on the Engage Victoria website through an online survey and interactive map activity
we collected feedback from the community and local park user groups through Engage Victoria
To support this engagement we provided information on the Burwood Public Open Space consultation via:
“I would use this path more once the proposed new park is built”
We’d like to thank the community for providing their feedback to help us design this new park
Key feedback themes have been identified through assessment of responses to the Engage Victoria survey and interactive map activity
responses from local park user groups as well as direct engagement with community members in the direct vicinity
a water feature and dog facilities were deemed impractical for a space of this size and also did not meet local council guidelines
We’d like to thank the community for participating in the design consultation for the Burwood Public Open Space
Your feedback is important and has helped us design and plan this new park
shelter and picnic facilities that will be installed near the Lundgren Chain Reserve playground at Highbury Road
All feedback summarised in this report has been reviewed and has informed the development of the Burwood Open Space replacement park design
we are continuing to engage with the local community
including those located in the direct vicinity of the site
This next phase of engagement will include distribution of information on the timeline of the park delivery and how any potential impacts will be mitigated during construction

Picture by Peter LorimerTUCKED behind bushland off the Fernleigh Track at Whitebridge sits the largely untouched 19th century former Burwood Colliery Dam
The Burwood Colliery Dam was built in the late 1800s in Whitebridge, and in August 2022, Crown Lands asked the community for feedback about its future
Crown Lands was investigating removing the dam and rehabilitating the land to a near-natural state
aside from some "bodgy" temporary scaffolding across the dam and a set of steep stairs being installed
There was a letter to the editor from one of the bird groups that identified
so it could be a feature of the track but it's just been ignored
more than 60 people went to two drop-in sessions held at Whitebridge High School and told Crown Lands the area was valued for its natural amenity
The dam acts as part of the local stormwater system
It reduces the concentration and speed of stormwater flows
meaning that sediment in stormwater is deposited into the dam
Crown Lands has said it is likely the dam will eventually silt up and become swampy land
It has previously said "major and costly repairs" would be required to extend the life of dam structures
Housing and Infrastructure Crown Lands spokesman said it was undertaking investigations on the dam wall and spillway as well as an environmental assessment of the site
"The investigations are to inform options for the future management of the site," he said
"No decision has been made on the long-term future of the site
"We will consult with the community on any future plans regarding the site at the appropriate times."
The temporary walkway and path over the old dam spillway was installed in 2023
which allows access between the Fernleigh Track and Lonus Avenue to Whitebridge High School
Mr Buckner wants a bridge installed across the reservoir linking Whitebridge High School with the Fernleigh Track, instead of Lake Macquarie City Council's plans for a path that would run down Waran Road and Kopa Street
"This land is sort of superfluous; it's Transport for NSW land
it's that whole hillside on the western side of the reservoir
gentle approach down to the southern end of the reservoir," he said
"This is an area that has so much potential; it's been neglected
"It could be a highlight of the Fernleigh Track
it could be the jewel in the crown of the Fernleigh Track."
A Lake Macquarie council spokesman said it was consulted as a stakeholder on the project
it should be responsible for answering questions about the former Burwood Colliery Dam
"We have not received any recent updates from Crown Lands about this site," he said.
The last record Lake Macquarie council has of a meeting or correspondence with Crown Lands about the site was in the first quarter of 2024.

SafeWork NSW has initiated an investigation into a partial building collapse that occurred on 22 January 2025 at a demolition site in Burwood
which took place around midday at 52-56 Railway Parade
involved the collapse of a section of a multi-storey commercial property and affected scaffolding
Strong winds contributed to the instability of the structure
prompting concerns about further collapse and necessitating the involvement of emergency services
Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Josh Turner reported that approximately 50 people were evacuated from surrounding buildings and the immediate area as a precaution
SafeWork NSW Inspectors have been collaborating closely with Fire and Rescue NSW
and engineers from Public Works throughout the night to secure the area
the inspectors remain on-site as they continue their investigation and oversee ongoing safety measures
SafeWork NSW Inspectors have issued notices to ensure work is carried out safely and to prohibit further demolition works until it is deemed safe to resume
emphasised the agency’s commitment to worker and public safety
stating: “While this incident will need to be thoroughly investigated
SafeWork NSW is putting demolition businesses on notice that we will not accept them putting worker and public safety at risk.”
Curtin further stressed that SafeWork NSW Inspectors have the authority to issue penalty notices or initiate prosecutions when safety laws are violated
The incident serves as a reminder of the high-risk nature of demolition work in the construction industry
SafeWork NSW has announced that from March 1
demolition licence holders will be required to ensure that demolition workers have completed prescribed training before undertaking licensed demolition work
SafeWork NSW encourages anyone to report workplace incidents anonymously by calling 13 10 50 or using the Speak Up Save Lives website and app
Additional resources regarding demolition work safety management for workers, employers, and licence holders are available on the SafeWork NSW website
this incident underscores the critical importance of adhering to safety protocols in high-risk construction activities

ShareOften billed as Sydney’s second Chinatown
Burwood has a deserved reputation as one of Sydney’s most delicious suburbs
but the past five years have seen it go from locals’ haunt to serious destination
Plenty of it has to do with the 2019 launch of its official Chinatown precinct
while council has plans to pedestrianise Burwood Road in the coming years
executive manager of place management and communication at Burwood Council
Burwood’s appeal can be explained in part by its residents
“We have such a multicultural community,” she says
citing that over 40 per cent of residents are from an Asian background
with more than 70 per cent speaking a language other than English at home
and it’s an incredible opportunity for our community to be exposed to and celebrate traditions over a bite to eat.”
And as much as Haymarket’s Chinatown should be celebrated
Wassef says Burwood offers something different
what we think is the unique selling point of Burwood Chinatown is that we have a mix of more anchor
but also very hawker-style eateries,” she says
“It doesn’t really matter what your budget is
it doesn’t matter if you want to walk through or spend a few hours in Burwood Chinatown
you kind of feel like there’s something for everyone.”

Throughout, neon lights blaze and hungry diners flit from stall to stall – many set up hawker-style.
Highlights in the upstairs food court include Perfect Tofu for gelatinous mung bean noodles in chilli sauce (liang fen) and stinky tofu, Kwafood Fried Skewer for flash-fried skewers dusted in chilli (try the giblet, potato or beef sticks) and Singapore Hawker for Hainanese chicken rice.
On the ground floor, Hello Pot Stew offers phoenix claws (chicken feet) braised to tenderness or crisp fried, along with gelatinous pork trotters hit with chilli and spring onion, while Guo Kui Master serves tandoor-baked flatbreads stuffed with the likes of lamb or preserved vegetable.
Out back, there’s cooked-to-order Japanese takoyaki at Go Go Yaki, Korean rice cakes at Siroo, plus night markets offering grilled chicken wings stuffed with sticky rice and Filipino-style pork belly skewers every Thursday to Sunday.
Matcha daifuku mochi at Ice Kirin.SuppliedMeanwhile, John Rivera of Melbourne’s cult Filipino gelateria Kariton Sorbetes opened the brand’s first Sydney shopfront last May right here in Burwood. Rivera notes it was the suburb’s vibrancy and energy that encouraged him to launch here, and the kaleidoscopic fit-out is made to match. Go for one scoop of indigo ube gelato with purple-yam fudge, another of durian chiffon, and eat them in a cup, or stuffed into a pandesal, the Filipino sweet bun.

Less new, but just as essential is Xi’an Eatery, where biang biang noodles are also a headline order, the Shaanxi staple handmade daily and served hot or cold under a rubbly topping of egg, tomato, pork, spring onions and chilli. The liang pi, or cold skin noodles, are equally appealing, while the roujiamo – flatbread stuffed with fatty pork or cumin-scented beef – is an essential add-on.

Suburban Rail Loop East from Cheltenham to Box Hill (SRL East) will connect our growing health
retail and employment precincts in Melbourne’s east and south east
Suburban Rail Loop Authority (SRLA) has prepared a Draft Burwood Structure Plan and Draft Planning Scheme Amendment (PSA)
The draft structure plan and draft planning scheme amendment are currently available for review
and both will be available for public review and comment until 22 April
The PSA proposes to implement the Cheltenham Structure Plan into the Bayside and Kingston planning schemes
SRLA is holding a series of information online webinars so you can listen to the project team and structure planning specialists about what the proposed changes might mean for you

The NSW Government has today confirmed Burwood and Fairfield have committed to establish the state’s next Special Entertainment Precincts (SEP)
The state’s first ever Special Entertainment Precinct was made permanent on Enmore Road in December 2023
This was followed by the Inner West Council and the City of Sydney’s commitment for additional Special Entertainment Precincts
Special Entertainment Precincts allow Councils to change trading hours and sound rules within a designated area to allow local hospitality and entertainment operators to thrive
“Burwood is becoming one of Sydney’s most popular nightlife precincts thanks to its famous Chinatown Night Markets and surrounding eateries
To further enhance the precinct Burwood Council will establish a Special Entertainment Precinct over three blocks around Burwood Chinatown,” the Government said in a statement
It says Fairfield is also emerging as a leading Western Sydney nightlife precinct with renowned eat streets with a range of cuisines
Fairfield Council will establish two Special Entertainment Precincts
one in Canley Heights along Canley Vale Road and the other in Canley Vale along Canley Vale Road
Burwood Council and Fairfield City Council will receive Special Entertainment Precinct Kickstart Grants ($195,000 for Burwood and $183,308 for Fairfield) to support strategic planning
developing acoustic frameworks and community consultation
Both Councils are aiming to establish the trial phase of their Special Entertainment Precincts by the end of 2025
Special Entertainment Precincts allow councils to future proof their entertainment precincts by notifying residents and prospective home buyers that they will be living in a defined area where later trading hours and higher levels of sound are supported by council
The move to establish Special Entertainment Precincts in Burwood and Fairfield are expected to be followed by more announcements
with another 15 local councils across metropolitan and regional NSW raising resolutions expressing interest in establishing SEP
“We’ve very excited to announce that Burwood and Fairfield will be our next hubs for vibrant nightlife
and to say that there’ll be more on the way,” said Minister for Music and the Night-time Economy
“Anyone who’s been out in Enmore will know it’s been a huge success
Now the same planning tools will boost other precincts
but in a flexible way that helps harness the unique personality of each community
“The days where it was all about piling into Kings Cross for a boozy night out are over
We are now backing dozens of very different nightlife precincts right across the city and the state

Parts of a multi-storey building in Sydney’s inner west have collapsed
prompting the urgent evacuation of hundreds as an excavator works to prop up the structure
Hundreds of people have been promptly evacuated after parts of a 10-storey building collapsed in Sydney’s inner west
The unoccupied building on Railway Pde in Burwood
is understood to have become unstable and partially fell at 3pm on Wednesday as scaffolding dislodged
The building fell onto an excavator which is currently stabilising the building to prevent further collapse
Hundreds of nearby workers and residents needed to be evacuated
FRNSW Superintendent Josh Turner told Nine News the excavator was put in place to support the structure after parts of the building started to fall
“Areas started to collapse which has caused issues with the scaffolding as well
the risk is collapsing onto public roads or people being hurt
or it actually falling into harm's way,” he said
He said the worker controlling the excavator is not at risk of being injured
ideally it's not there to have buildings collapse upon them
but he has a level of protection around him,” he said
Residents of a dual-building apartment block on the same street
had to be evacuated after the incident unfolded
SafeWork NSW and a structural engineer are understood to be on site
Crews are working to successfully manage the fallen parts of the building

It’s a new dawn for East Burwood as the club will take on 2025 with a new senior coach
it’s a familiar feeling at East Burwood Reserve as the club welcomes its fourth senior head coach in the last four years
Rams fans will be filled with hope ahead of the new season
senior player and senior captain Kyle Dove has hung up the boots and will take the reigns of the club he’s spent his life at
“It’s just been really exciting to work with players that obviously I’m very familiar with and have spent time playing with,” said Dove
The first-time head coach will work with many of his former teammates as he looks to take East Burwood further up the ladder in 2025
Among these are Lachy Jose (seven times in best) and Marcus Young (twelve goals)
as last season’s leading goal kicker has returned to Templestowe over the off-season
Dove is insistent that Mariani’s departure is an exception to the norm
“The most pleasing thing is being able to hold onto our core,” said Dove
“We’ve only lost a couple players… we’ve been able to retain probably 95% of our list.”
East Burwood struggled with consistency last season
finishing just two places off the bottom of the table
Head coach Dove is looking to take some strides in the off-season but understands that too much change is not always a good thing
“It’s important not to make massive overriding changes,” said Dove
“We’ve obviously built this year around where we saw a few patches in our game last year
“[The changes] have been pretty minor in terms of introducing little nuances in our game that I think will hold us in really good stead
“We’re going to play a really exciting brand of footy.”
The Rams had to wait until Round 5 to pick up their first win in 2024
those at East Burwood Reserve are adamant on opening their account much earlier on this time around
“We’ve already spoken about wanting to hit Round 1 in full stride,” said coach Dove
“Really honing in on our craft and knowing our role and being able to execute… we don’t want to be hitting Round 1 and still be finding out a little bit about how we want to play and our brand.”
East Burwood will travel to Central Reserve in Round One to take on Waverley Blues

In a press conference shortly after the bodies were found, McDonald said it was too early to say yet whether the incident was a murder-suicide or “domestic related”.

A one-year-old girl has been found dead after being left in a car outside a childcare centre in Sydney’s Inner West
in what police have described as “an absolute tragedy”
NSW Police say the child was found at 5.35pm after emergency services responded to reports of a toddler being located unresponsive in a vehicle outside a childcare centre on Marana Road
reportedly turned up to the daycare centre to pick up the toddler
It’s understood the man then discovered the girl was still in her baby capsule in his car

Superintendent Christine McDonald said police were still piecing together a timeline of events before the child was found and the cause of death would be determined by the coroner.
“The information provided to us suggests that this baby was left inside the vehicle for an extended period of time on a very hot day here in Sydney,” she said, speaking at a press conference on Tuesday night.
“Leaving a child in a vehicle at any time can be dangerous. Leaving a child inside a vehicle for an extended period of time can be deadly.
Supt McDonald did not confirm whether the man who found the child was the girl’s father but described him as a “direct relative”, adding he had been taken to hospital suffering from shock.
“Once (the man) is able to, we will speak with him to obtain more details,” she said.
The child’s mother is also “assisting with inquiries”.
Supt McDonald said it was impossible to imagine how the parents were feeling, but they were “no doubt, extremely upset”.
Officers from Burwood Police Area Command have established a crime scene and are continuing their investigation.

Emergency services were called to the complex on Conder Street, Burwood, at 8:47am on Monday.

She said in the process of trying to determine how the man ended up in the courtyard, police were directed to a unit where they discovered the body of a woman with fatal stab wounds.
Superintendent McDonald said the man and woman are both described as being of Asian appearance in their 20s or 30s.
"CCTV footage has a female walking towards the unit, which is why we went there," she said.
