As a keen reader of US fiction, I’ve seen the word a thousand times: clapboard. The stuff of Californian bungalows and Cormac McCarthy. What Australians call weatherboard, overlapping lengths of pine nailed in place, just as the word is fixed in my reading memory.
Then came an audiobook to shiver my timbers. Suddenly, I heard of “clabberd” houses, stopping mid-walk to adjust my ear-buds. Maybe the author meant clobbered, as in storm-struck houses, though no twister or space junk was mentioned. I hit rewind. Relistened. Yep, definitely clabberd. And then the penny dropped. I’d fallen for a sight word.
QI elves, the brainiacs behind that show’s questions, call it Calliope Syndrome, when a word you know by sight delivers facial egg when you utter it. Calliope is a classic example in both senses. You meet the steam organ on the page, or its Greek muse namesake, and presume the word rhymes with antelope. Wrong. Coloscopy is a closer match, and probably less painful.
Closer to home, we recognise this slip as hyperbole syndrome, honouring former PM Julia Gillard who lent that problematic word a Tupperware vibe in 2011, speaking of hyper-bowls on The 7:30 Report. Notably, calliope and hyperbole own Greek roots, up there with pedagogy and paradigm: two more booby traps.
Derision came fast after Gillard’s “fox-pass” – though we all do it, readers especially. From awry to zabaglione, we meet a word in writing, and test its sound in our minds. Gunwales, say, imply a Cardiff revolver more than the sonic twin of funnels, just as the cotoneaster suggests a Lent crib, until you give it breath.
Granny Clampett, of all people, taught me how to say victuals. A dozen YouTube videos have coached us in acai and Saoirse. There’s no shame in having a crack, so long as we don’t rely too heavily on satnav savants, those dashboard bots who direct us to Kinneton instead of Kyneton, or Jim-pee as Gympie. Where exactly? Maybe AI could do with a few elocution lessons.
Kinder listeners will know a wonky epitome when they hear one, a dodgy heinous, lending guidance. Just as adults echo an amended Yosemite Sam to a kid. Lovingly, intent to see their reading confidence mirror their gumption to speak.
Macabre is exactly that. Who can blame a reader for murdering that monstrosity? Ennui is ridiculous. Quinoa? Please. Invented by a sadist. In fact, the one time a fox-pass will bite is when you claim the mantle of authority. Spare a thought for newsreaders, say, updating listeners on Belarus tennis seeds, Icelandic volcanoes, or this year’s tragic collision above the Potomac.
I recall when a financial adviser lost his audience at a seminar. His credibility. The keynote was humming, his buzzwords buzzing, only for the magic to dispel with “juckapose”. Doubts haunted the pundit’s J-curves thanks to one lousy J-word. Evidence suggests we forgive our peers for a wayward minestrone, but call yourself an Italian chef and blow that? You’re bruschetta.
As an ABC broadcaster, especially during fire season, I know the responsibility of nailing down phonetics. Albany and Derby are old hat, or should be, etched in your fox-pass playbook. The good people of Mirranatwa, or nearby Woohlpooer, won’t appreciate their towns being mangled into bad charades. If things are going awry, or locals run the risk of being clobbered, then best to make your syllables sound.

A central Queensland club is about to be transformed thanks to the generosity of a local council that has tapped into the boom in golf
and a street-smart committee that refused to let the club die
an 18-hole facility an hour’s drive south-east of Rockhampton
is having a new irrigation system installed as a result of a new arrangement with Gladstone Regional Council’s adjacent waste water treatment plant
Venue manager Deborah Gatenby said the improvements were expected to be completed around May this year
As works continue six days a week two or three holes have been out of play each week but the 400-plus members are confident that the pain will be worthwhile when the final project is completed
Gladstone Council has been diverting waste water to the golf course for more than 20 years
but previously paid a minimal fee of several thousand dollars a year to do this
Five years ago when the Covid pandemic hit hard
the club fell into several hundred thousand dollars of debt
and they owed all this money to the members,” said club president Paulette Lindley
“The club at the time said ‘we need to sell’.”
After some negotiations with the council for a sale
a new committee headed by Lindley came into place
The club told the council that it was no longer for sale
Having researched the substantial cost of alternatives for the council’s disposal of grey water
“They (the council) came back to us and said ‘we can’t do that
but the way it will work is if we redo the infrastructure
We think that it’s going to be a facility that will attract more people
We’re very appreciative of what the council is doing.”
The project is worth around $5 million and includes full irrigation of the course and driving range as well as soil remediation work
golf tips and access to partner promotions

Backxwash joins the show to discuss her recent release
The first ever US-based concert event to feature a solo talent
was held on March 26th at the iconic Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles
a talent of hololive production’s very first English generation hololive English -Myth-
this solo concert marks the start of hololive production’s continued growth at bringing its amazing performance events overseas
We hope that this report conveys the excitement and energy of the concert
Though hololive production has hosted group concerts in the United States such as hololive English 2nd Concert -Breaking Dimensions- on August 24th and 25th
Mori Calliope 2nd Concert “Grimoire” is the first concert in hololive history to star a single performing talent overseas and outside of Japan
made her debut within hololive English back on September 12th
As an early pioneer for English-speaking VTubers
this year marks her fifth year together with the agency
and within an impressive two years of activity
signed with major record label Universal Music Japan
a total of 22 of her original songs were performed over the course of the Los Angeles solo concert
With a sold out venue and lines of fans present long before the doors were set to open
the concert once more reaffirmed hololive production’s growing popularity in its efforts to expand the sensation of VTubing across the world
the concert welcomed them with an introductory video into Mori Calliope’s world as a grim reaper— who rather than aspiring to climb higher and higher to reach the skies as a typical idol might
instead journeys further and further into the deepness of the abyss
This introduction was followed by ongoing dark and edgy aesthetics which laced each following song performances
Clad in a cap and fashionable street-style outfit
Calliope opened with her first song of the night
The energizing performance featured pink burning lights as well as bursts of smoke pillars
Calliope was joined by four skeleton back up dancers
and supporting her through “未来島 ~Future Island~”
a song released in 2023 made to commemorate the release of popular manga series ONE PIECE’s 106th volume
The friendly skeletons continued to dance with Calliope through “Yona Yona Journey”
which shifted the atmosphere of the stage to that of a futuristic yet somehow simultaneously nostalgic dance club
Next up came a snazzy and high-energy performance of “NEZUMI Scheme” with an animated backdrop that featured bold animations and cartoons
During “FLASH BANG” which followed shortly after
Calliope introduced us to Japanese graffiti aesthetics and a groovy beat
“Make ‘Em Afraid” further amped the excitement of the audience with its playfully hypnotic melody line
With the crowd clapping along to help carry the tempo
Calliope embodied her grim reaper image and empowered the audience with her song
With a shift in mood first induced by visual noise and glitch art
Calliope appeared on stage with a bass guitar shaped like a large scythe
A stand mic of bones gave the performance an extra heavy metal touch
and with a genre change to hip-hop rap rock
some fans even began to throw their heads and hair along
a collaboration song with METAL GEAR SOLID
a large snake and a code matrix were featured in the backdrop while Calliope drove through the earworm chorus again and again
which enraptured the audience in a haunting melody
Large skeleton hands enveloped Calliope after
and revealed a new costume shown on the concert’s official artwork— a black outfit with lace and other gothic elements as well as horn-like headpiece
she continued with the lively song “DONMAI”
“Last Days” which showcased Calliope’s singing ability and higher voice register near a cathedral gate and beneath a large
allowed Calliope to similarly maintain a slower and relaxed energy
the stage presented an underwater scene with tropical fish while Calliope sang “through the blue”
the crowd waved their pen lights along to the acoustic strums of a guitar
and Calliope strutted about the stage and inspired confidence through her dancing
pulling the energy up from the previously relaxed three pieces
heavier guitars returned and the audience sang along to the soulful and powerful melody
skeleton backup dancers returned to join Calliope for “Go-Getters” the ending theme song of the anime “Suicide Squad: ISEKAI”
and Calliope once again emerged on stage in a casual concert T-shirt and cap
“Scuffed Up Age” showcased urban and savvy style first
while “glass slipper” embodied the loneliness that comes with the nature of being a grim reaper after
Calliope plunged the crowd into her dark world with the song “Black Sheep”
as the final song and epilogue to the show
Calliope dedicated the spooky “Left for Dead Lullaby” to her fans
which conveyed the concert’s preluding image of falling deeper and deeper into the abyss
Calliope’s evolution over the past five years is clear with this concert
and she displayed the prowess and skills she gained as an artist in this mega milestone for not just herself
but also paved a way for hololive production itself in its continued expansion
It’s amazing that we were able to share this with you
and we can’t wait to see where this journey takes us all

the 395GT GRP yacht was fully refitted in 2022 and remains in ABS class
Continual upgrades have kept her in good condition throughout her life and she is a proven world traveller that has "cruised around the world on her own bottom"
This announcement comes after a previous reduction of $1 million was made to her sales listing in October 2024
Calliope's most recent refit in 2022 focused on both aesthetic and functional changes. Her current owner, an experienced yachtsman, added a bulbous bow for improved seakeeping and fuel consumption, as well as making some improvements to her original Ron Holland design
The motor yacht has a flexible accommodation layout for 10 guests which can be configured as either five or six cabins (with the option of using the captain's cabin for guest use)
and she benefits from a full-beam owner's cabin with a king-sized bed
two bathrooms with a steam shower and whirlpool tub plus a gym-office hybrid – rare for a yacht of this size
There is a good selection of al fresco areas on board for a new owner to make use of
including a sundeck fitted with a dayhead and whirlpool and a large aft deck with dining table
The yacht's C32 Caterpillar engines propel her to a top speed of 17 knots pared back to a cruising speed of 12 knots
She benefits from a shallow 2.3-metre draft
making her perfect for exploring the Caribbean and Australia
Calliope is now asking $11,500,000 and is currently on display at the Palm Beach International Boat Show.

WORCESTER — It was about 170 years ago when Worcester was first introduced to a new and incredibly loud sound that created enough din to be heard miles away
so much so that the Worcester City Council banned the use of the steam calliope within city limits within a year of its creation
The musical instrument was created by Worcester resident Joshua Stoddard
who had thought it could replace church bells
By running steam through a series of train whistles
the large musical instrument can be played using a pinned cylinder or played manually using a keyboard
named after the oldest of the nine muses in Greek mythology
it remains a misnomer as the sound produced by the steam calliope is quite shrill and extremely loud
The first public demonstration of the instrument took place at Worcester Common on July 4
Stoddard's daughter Jennie sat at the calliope and played numbers like “Yankee Doodle,” as the crowd gathered
More: Laurel: Meet Joshua Stoddard, Worcester resident and inventor of the steam calliope
“He only knew maybe three songs,” said Vanessa Bumpus, exhibit coordinator of the Museum of Worcester, as she walked over to a small steam exhibit located within the Fuller Gallery of Industrial History
investors who make industry the story of Worcester
so everyone knew what time it was when the whistles blew," she continued
he was able to take those train whistles and turn it into music."
the calliope took to the rivers and waterways of the United States
where music from the massive steamboats entertained those on board as well as spectators from shore
According to “The History of the Great American Steam Piano” by Steven Espensheid
the first steamboat fitted with a calliope was the Str
Many steamboat enthusiasts argue there were earlier calliopes
the steam calliope made its way into carousels and ultimately the big top
making an appearance in the circus as it traveled around the country
Stoddard established the American Steam Piano Co in Worcester
his financial backers pushed him out of the business
as did many steam-powered engines and contraptions
The instrument was used in the 1967 record of “Being for the Benefit of Mr
Kite!” by the Beatles to recreate the sounds of a circus
In an interview with NPR in 1980
George Martin explained the song has been “built entirely around a poster that hung in John (Lennon’s) house,” depicting a circus
“Obviously he wanted a calliope kind of sound
And I knew I needed steam organ sounds — you know
the kinds of things that used to be in fairs
which were driven by steam engines,” Martin said
it was particularly difficult to find a working calliope
Martin was forced to gather dozens of recordings of calliopes and splice them together to create the musical number
the calliope is nearly synonymous with the iconic steamboats slowly pushing their way up and down the Mississippi
there is no surviving calliope anywhere within city limits
very few calliopes are left in existence outside of historical riverboats and some carousels dotted around the world
The closest calliope was located inside the center of the Flying Horses Carousel located in Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard
it was replaced with a modern organ several years ago in a massive restoration effort

The 32.5-metre Numarine 32XP explorer yacht Calliope has been sold in-house at Denison Yachting
Clarke representing the seller and Juno Prudhomm introducing the buyer
Accommodation on board is for 10 guests across a five-cabin layout comprising a 30-square-metre master cabin forward on the main deck, two VIP cabins and two double cabins, all with en suite. Meanwhile, there are quarters for a crew of five across three cabins.
Calliope is characterised by her eye-catching blue hull, vertical bow and "rugged, hefty silhouette" with extensive angular windows. Inside, she is equally as striking; completely customised to her owner's preferences, her living spaces are adorned with a combination of marble, wood, leather and brass.
As specified by her owner, the usual sixth cabin on the 32XP model has instead been substituted for an extra sky lounge saloon and bar on Calliope's upper deck. This offers another entertaining or relaxing space on board, in addition to the "massive" main saloon with a large L-shaped sofa, love seat, television and separate formal dining space.
Outside, highlights include a large beach club with separate day head and ample storage for tenders and toys, and a spacious upper aft deck which is capable of storing a tender during long voyages. Her flybridge deck features a second helm station forward in addition to a large dining table and a comfortable sofa setting aft.
The motor yacht can reach a top speed of 14 knots, a cruising speed of 12 knots and a range of 4,000 nautical miles at nine knots. She has been designed for passage-making by night, with noise and vibration kept to a minimum. The sale also included her matching blue-hulled Axopar 29 tender and her Palm Beach RIB.

If you're still wondering what a VTuber is
Although small in terms of the overall creator economy
the genre has a surprisingly dedicated fan base — one unlike I've seen before
most of the fans at Mori Calliope's show appeared to be in their late teens and 20s
It was the type of engaged fandom I've really only seen YouTubers conjure with younger audiences before
The crowd seemed like one you'd find at an anime convention
The show was also more highly produced than other YouTuber events I'd seen

Hololive also sold the event merch online and at a Los Angeles pop-up earlier in the month
Part of the show was livestreamed for free on YouTube for Mori Calliope's global audience
the VTuber directed those viewers to a link where they could buy tickets to watch the rest of the performance online
The tickets ranged from $43 to $51 on platforms like SPWN and Streaming+

Danish renewables giant European Energy is seeking federal environmental approval for its plans to build a 1.1 GW solar farm near the industrial city of Gladstone in central Queensland
The largest solar power project planned for Australia’s main electricity grid has reached a new milestone with European Energy seeking a green light under the federal government’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act to build the 1.1 GW Upper Calliope Solar Farm in Queensland
the Upper Calliope Solar Farm would be the biggest in the National Electricity Market (NEM)
spanning 2,700 hectares and producing 2.8 TWh of clean energy per year – enough to meet about 5% of Queensland’s current demand
The project, which is supported by a 25-year power purchase agreement with mining giant Rio Tinto, is being developed about 50 kilometres southwest of Gladstone in the midst of the Callide phase of the planned Central Queensland Renewable Energy Zone
The project site is currently being used for cattle grazing activities
including the type and number of modules and inverters
specific layout and electricity generating capacity of the project have yet to been finalised
The developer did say battery energy storage is not part of the initial development but may be added as a future stage
It is expected the Upper Calliope plant would connect into the NEM via Powerlink’s 275 kVa network with a new substation to be built by the state-owned network operator adjacent to the project site
Construction of the Upper Calliope plant is set to start in 2025 or 2026

We had the opportunity to interview Mori Calliope following the release of her latest album PHANTOMIME
Mori is one of the biggest English-speaking VTubers with over 2 million YouTube subscribers
She is affiliated with the Hololive agency and in addition to streaming various video games
she is known for her rap skills and a broad repertoire of songs
Q: Thank you very much for taking the time to do this interview
It’s been almost a year since our first interview with you regarding your EP “JIGOKU 6.” Congratulations on the release of “PHANTOMIME”
What would you say makes “PHANTOMIME” different from your previous releases
‘PHANTOMIME’ stands apart because it’s a deeply personal reflection on authenticity and breaking free from societal roles
It’s about reclaiming your own stage and living for yourself rather than constantly trying to please others
I think it’s more introspective compared to my previous releases.Q: How long have you been working on “PHANTOMIME”
What was your vision for the album when you first started working on it
Did that vision change in the final version
Mori: I’ve been working on it for about a year
the vision was simple—life as a grand stage play where we perform different roles depending on the audience
it evolved into a message about shedding those roles and embracing who you truly are
The final version captures that sense of liberation I hoped for.”Q: This may be a tricky question for an artist
but among the tracks on “PHANTOMIME,” which one would you want to highlight and are the most proud of
Mori: ‘Choosing just one song is very difficult
but ‘DONMAI’ is particularly special to me
Working with Jean-Ken Johnny from MAN WITH A MISSION was a unique experience as he’s fluent in English
allowing us to have deeper discussions about the track
and his input brought new insights into the creative process
helping me grow as an artist.”DONMAI – Mori CalliopeQ: What was it like working on “Go-Getters,” considering it was the ending theme for the “Suicide Squad ISEKAI” anime
Was there anything you would say was a challenge
How does it feel having such a well-known anime studio work with you
and seeing them bring my vision to life feels like a dream come true
It’s one of those moments where I feel like all my hard work is paying off
please check it out!”Go-Getters – Mori Calliope Music VideoQ: “Cult Following” stands out musically in “PHANTOMIME,” as it is perhaps the most “metal” song you released so far
How did the partnership with WARGASM come about
Could we see more of this heavier sound in your future work
Mori: I connected with WARGASM through mutual industry friends
I’ve always wanted to experiment with a heavier sound
and they seemed like the perfect fit for this track
I loved the intensity they brought to the collaboration
I’m open to more heavy sounds—if the right inspiration strikes!”Q: “SNEAKING” got a dramatic rock makeover with Lotus Juice for the release of the new album
Can you talk about the creative choices behind this and your thoughts on the final product
Mori: I always felt ‘Sneaking’ had potential for a powerful duet
and working with Lotus Juice was a dream come true
He was one of my first exposures to Japanese rap
and his energy perfectly matched what I envisioned
The final product brought the track to life in a way that exceeded my expectations.”Q: You collaborated with STAYC’s Yoon on a remix of “Go-Getters.” How did this partnership happen and how do you feel about your music becoming a sort of bridge to the K-pop world
Mori: My producer introduced me to STAYC’s work
and I was already a bit familiar with them through TikTok
It’s amazing to see my music connecting with K-pop artists and audiences—it feels like we’re building bridges across different worlds
and I’d love to do more of it.”Q: You had an appearance on the Trash Taste podcast where you described your streaming setup during your debut
sitting on the floor and using the desktop tower as a mousepad
Reflecting on your evolution since that point
how do you feel about your accomplishments since then

the concept of a Vtuber might be puzzling at first
the Vtuber world takes things a bit further than the beloved Vocaloid-turned-virtual idol
While Miku exists mainly as music software who performs live as a hologram
there's an actual person behind each Vtuber singing songs and interacting with the community
Calliope has deliver a plethora of tunes for fans
including her latest studio album Phantomime
Calliope kicked off her two-hour set with the electric "MERA MERA," which found the artist stating
so you know you're already dead" as thousands in attendance bounced around the floor
The following track "Miraijima ~future island~" found a group of skeletons dancing alongside the artist
The sold-out show was in jeopardy following the fires in Los Angeles back in January
Calliope was concerned about keeping the concert going
but she chose to keep it alive to give folks a chance to take their mind off things for a minute
While Calliope has a slew of pop jams in her catalog, the artist brought her rock side out with the nu-metal-tinged "Cult Following." With her bass in hand
the artist delivered some sinister bass lines alongside the live band on stage
Calliope continued her rock journey with the songs "SNEAKING - revenge" and "six feet under." Towards the end of her set
Calliope delivered another shift in styles with softer tunes "Last Days," "Skeletons," and "through the blue."
Calliope delivered a handful of costume changes during her set
which was instant thanks to the technology at hand
Technology also made it possible for Calliope to merge with the live audience; in certain camera angles
Calliope can be seen dancing and singing in front of everyone in attendance
With the ability to perform in both English and Japanese
Calliope was torn between embracing her English fans by doing more English tunes or unveiling more J-pop material for her Japanese audience
Fortunately for fans of both styles of music
the artist told the crowd she would continue singing in both English and Japanese as a way to showcase her real musical identity
Calliope has found fame online with millions of followers
but things could've taken a different turn
the artist auditioned for an idol group during their final year of eligibility
Calliope decided to do things her way through being a Vtuber
I can be an idol forever," stated the artist
Thank you for so many supportive messages!!! To the dead beats, to my friends- I’m overwhelmed right now, but I’m excited to look over everything properly tomorrow! Which is…another busy day!Streams! New MV! Secret work! 8,}I hope I can just lay down and let it sink in… pic.twitter.com/kSMVB6G57C
