Cameron Park Zoo got a lot colder as a storm of South African penguins swept into a new $12.8 million habitat
The 11 pairs of penguins have been one of the zoo’s most popular attractions
the zoo’s main work with the penguins is through conservation
As it stands, the South African penguin is threatened with extinction by 2035
Cameron Park Zoo now holds 11 out of the 10,000 available breeding pairs across the planet
zoos across the country are working to make sure the penguins don’t head toward extinction
Cameron Park Zoo originally gained the colony from the Fort Worth Zoo
The penguins were moved due to construction and have had a peaceful transition since
Animal Care Manager Christopher Geerts and Senior Keeper Clara Tackitt are in charge of the penguins and birds
their main job is to make sure the bonded pairs remain happy in their new homes
“The plan ultimately started probably a decade ago
just as a vision of master planning,” Geerts said
our zoo management had this vision of extending Africa and housing African penguins and black-footed cats and having more of an event space
it kind of rolled out as a bond project and it was voted on by the public.”
The indoor habitat where the penguins live is state of the art
with multiple features and enrichment activities to keep the penguins
There’s an indoor pool for swimming that includes a boiler and chiller to heat and cool the pool
as well as mist fans to replicate the cool weather of their original wild habitat
Focusing on the zoo’s conservation efforts, Cameron Park Zoo is essentially split between exhibits focusing on entertainment and education for the Waco population
The other half is used for conservation groups
“We really try to focus on donating funds to different in-country conservation efforts that are being done,” Geerts said. “When we’re talking about African penguins, we donate and we partner with African Penguin Safe
And what that particular group does is they have a handful of different projects in-country that directly impact the wild penguins.”
Some of these programs include an artificial nest project
habitat restoration and disaster relief programs
Every time somebody comes to the zoo or donates to their zoological society or to the Cameron Park Zoo
a portion of that can directly go to help wild penguins
Tackitt admits she’s always been an animal person growing up
she said how each one had a unique and sometimes “stinker-like personality.”
“They all have their own personalities
and he’s got Melanoma,” Tackitt said
“So he’s going through cancer treatments right now and he’s just this old man
then he’s going to go take his nap and he’s good
But then you’ve got our younger girls and they’re just very inquisitive.”
Mauri is accompanied by his mate Rita to his various cancer appointments
as the two lovebirds tend to get restless when they are away from each other for too long
Cameron Park Zoo is also enrolled in the SSP or Species Survival Program. Their main role is a genetic database that lets zookeepers know which married pairs of penguins can and cannot breed. The penguins have only been in Waco since August, so no eggs have officially been made. However, the zoo has recently had one bonded pair approved to breed.
“I think it’s just a matter of time before we start getting some eggs and start having some offspring,” Geerts said. “You can’t tell a penguin, ‘You’re not allowed to pair with this female, you have to pair with this female.’ You cannot tell that for a fact. They are like, ‘This is my mate and that’s it.’ And you’re like, ‘Y’all can’t have babies because y’all are cousins.'”
The two recommend for anyone interested in supporting bird conservation and the penguins to donate to the Cameron Park Zoo or simply buy a ticket to see the animals themselves as every bit goes a long way to preserving this endangered species.

For 29 years Cal Fire has served as the Cameron Park Fire Department and that relationship will continue for at least another five years. Photo courtesy of the Cameron Park Community Services District
After exploring other options that didn’t pan out, the Cameron Park Community Services Board of Directors went back to the tried and true — approving April 16 a new five-year agreement with Cal Fire to provide fire protection services.
“This agreement took a lot of time and hard work … and we’re happy to have it,” said CPCSD General Manager Maurice Johnson.
The five-year agreement approved 4-0 last week with Cal Fire includes the following locked-in, not-to-exceed amounts:
The contract maintains the current staffing levels at both Station 88 and Station 89 — two personnel staffed daily at each plus a battalion chief providing oversight and command. At one point, Cal Fire had proposed closing Station 88 to cut costs, much to Cameron Park residents’ discontent.
"The agreement also includes a one-year intent to terminate clause, allowing either the district or Cal Fire to terminate the contract with one year’s notice if necessary,” Johnson’s staff report notes. "Additionally, any proposed increases or decreases in staffing levels will be subject to discussions between the District and Cal Fire should the need arise."
Acknowledging the CSD still has budget challenges, Johnson told directors and the public that staff has already started looking at cost-cutting and revenue-generating strategies to ensure the district has enough to cover the cost of the contract, especially as it jumps to more than $4 million in years four and five.
Cal Fire has provided the Cameron Park CSD with fire protection, emergency medical services and overall fire and medical response management for the past 29 years. Last year, in an effort to save the district money, the community’s ambulance service was transferred to EDH Fire, which now operates the medic unit out of Station 86 on Bass Lake Road — a short distance from where it was housed at Cameron Park Fire Station 89 on Country Club Drive.
Board President Dawn Wolfson, Vice President Katie Gilchrest and Directors Sidney Bazett and Monique Scobey voted in favor of the Cal Fire contract. Director Tim Israel was absent from the April 16 meeting.

A $116 million residential subdivision at Cameron Park has topped this year’s most costly Development Approval (DA) list.
The 858-lot subdivision on the fringes of both Newcastle and Lake Macquarie LGAs is being managed by Sydney-based Winten Property Group and sits within Minmi and Cameron Park borders.
Stage five of the Cameron Park development has become Lake Macquarie’s single-most valuable approved DA for the 2023/24 financial year.
It was given the green light by the Regional Planning Panel in December 2023.
It’s just one of the multi-million-dollar developments that make up Lake Macquarie’s $1.2 billion 2023-24 approval list and takes the city’s DA total to $7 billion in the past five years.
A high-rise residential tower at Charlestown with a DA approval of $13.6 million
residential unit blocks in Edgeworth valued at $25 million and a commercial/residential development in Toronto valued at $36.6 million were atop the 17 DA or DA modifications.
Lake Macquarie City Council averaged just 18 days to process 2000-plus development applications and DA modifications approved in the past 12 months.
Council’s director development planning and regulation David Antcliff said the figures reflected continued growth and investment confidence in the region
“It’s not just the overall value of these DAs that is encouraging to support the city’s growth – it’s their diversity,” he said.
“We’re handling applications for everything from medium-density infill developments in centrally located suburbs like Mount Hutton and Edgeworth to shopping centre upgrades
entertainment facilities and commercial premises.”
“It’s a demonstration of our city and the wider Hunter Region’s growth and our ongoing push to address Australia’s housing crisis.”
Despite strong demand for development across Lake Macquarie in the past 12 months
the number of DAs and DA modifications approved dipped to its lowest level in five years.
Mr Antcliff said that reflected a nationwide trend
with higher interest rates and soaring inflation eroding overall confidence.
“We are very keen to grow this city with suitable
and we are eager to assess applications as they are submitted,” he said.
Lake Macquarie City mayor Kay Fraser said expansion of the North West Catalyst Area
combined with the NSW Government’s push to increase housing density around train stations and other key infrastructure
meant further high-value development in Lake Macquarie was on the horizon.
“The challenge is always to balance the need for growth with the desire to retain the amenity and enviable lifestyle we enjoy here in Lake Mac,” she said.
“I’m confident we have the appropriate checks and balances in place to help strike that balance and ensure our city remains a place where people want to live
invest and visit for many years to come.”

Cameron Park CSD officials plan to activate the gate at Cameron Park Lake on May 15
visitors to Cameron Park Lake will have to pay a $5.50 daily fee for vehicle access to the property as the newly installed gate will be online — ready to take Cameron Park Community Services District annual passes
credit and debit cards as well as other electronic forms of payment like Apple Pay
“We’re trying to make it as easy as possible for people to access the lake,” said interim CPCSD General Manager Maurice Johnson
The gate replaces a once-staffed kiosk but didn’t come without controversy
Previous GM Alan Gardner spearheaded the project
Gardner later proposed a $10 per vehicle fee
CPCSD directors and residents vehemently opposed that suggestion and also expressed frustrations at the cost and long delays encountered during construction and installation
Johnson’s proposal of $5.50 (50 cents of which will offset transaction fees charged to the district) was more palatable to the board and public
Directors approved the fee 4-0 with board President Dawn Wolfson
Vice President Katie Gilchrest and Directors Sidney Bazett and Monique Scobey voting in favor
Director Tim Israel was absent from the April 16 meeting
Johnson shared the total project cost was approximately $100,000 and included:
• Electrical and communications system installation
• Emergency apparatus preemption system access
• Installation of the automated robotic entry arm
• Integration of high-resolution security cameras and a multi-modal payment system
Annual revenue is expected to come in at around $93,500 with that money designated to offset some of the initial purchase cost
fund ongoing maintenance and operations support of the gate system and contribute to general upkeep and improvements at Cameron Park Lake
the $5.50 daily fee will apply to all vehicles
Board members did express an interest in creating a resident and non-resident fee structure
which Johnson confirmed could be done at a later date
Cameron Park Lake is located at 2989 Cambridge Road in Cameron Park
The recreation area includes a man-made lake
paved parking and a gazebo with picnic areas that are rentable

Valentine’s Day isn’t just for humans
Some of the zoo’s most beloved residents are celebrating love in their own way
the animal kingdom has its version of love stories
the zoo is embracing the season with festive decorations and special events for both animals and visitors alike
While Fort Worth senior Landon Rossi is a frequent visitor to see the capybaras
he admits he hasn’t given much thought to animal relationships
“The last time I thought about animals being together was when I was a kid,” Rossi said
Among the most devoted couples at the zoo are the African penguins, who, according to the Maryland Zoo
said some couples have successfully raised offspring or even acted as foster parents
“When you go to our exhibit — when you come visit the zoo — there is a board with their names and who they are next to is who they are actually paired with,” Day said
Sushi — such a cute name — is with Theodore
Penguins aren’t the only lovebirds at the zoo. Giraffes and orangutans have also established strong familial units. While male giraffes are polygamous according to WorldAtlas
Dane is a proud father to a baby giraffe at the zoo
orangutan couple May and KJ are raising their young one
Other relationships are still in the early stages — like sloths Chewy and Malohi
if you will — still getting to know each other,” Day said
in the future … they become boyfriend and girlfriend.”
others take a different approach to relationships
and when she’s done with a boyfriend
she definitely breaks up with them,” Day said
Throughout the zoo, festive Valentine’s decorations — including pink boxes and hearts — add to the romantic atmosphere. But for human visitors, the zoo is offering a unique way to celebrate: the “Mating Game,” a themed trivia night on Friday from 6-9 p.m.
For Rossi, spending Valentine’s Day at the zoo followed by a game night seems like an unexpectedly perfect way to celebrate.
“Seeing the zoo couples would be a fun way to spend the day, especially with a significant other,” Rossi said. “Before a Valentine’s reservation, you can enjoy nature’s love with your own.”
For $100 per ticket, guests can enjoy a champagne toast at the new Gloria and F.M. Young Penguin Shores exhibit, a three-course dinner, four drink tickets, animal encounters and a playful trivia-style game.
“We will have trivia about animal mating behaviors, which is fun and silly, and this year, we’re adding a champagne toast at our new penguin exhibit, so that’ll be a lot of fun,” Day said. “Then we’ll come back to our new education center and have dinner.”
While the zoo hosts the Mating Game annually, this is only the second year incorporating the trivia component, Day said.
According to the Cameron Park Zoo website, proceeds from the Mating Game event help to fund the zoo’s education department. Tickets for Mating Game are sold out, but these many animal pairs can still be seen at the zoo.

WACO, Texas (KXXV) — Runners will fill Cameron Park and Waco’s downtown riverfront on Saturday as the city hosts three racing events throughout the day.
The action begins with the Toughest ‘N Texas Trail Runs, where participants will run distances from 5K to 50K across Cameron Park. Races will start in the early morning and continue into the late afternoon.
Midday brings the 0.5K for PreK, a playful and family-friendly event hosted by the Junior League of Waco. Held on the historic Waco Suspension Bridge, the short-distance race runs from morning until around noon and supports early childhood education initiatives.
As evening falls, the popular Light Up the Dark 5K will take over part of downtown. The nighttime race will result in the temporary closure of University Parks Drive between Washington Avenue and the Herring Street Bridge from 5 to 9 p.m. The Washington Avenue Bridge and Pecan Bottoms parking lot will remain open to traffic and attendees.
City officials advise residents and visitors to plan ahead, as the events are expected to bring additional traffic and activity to the area.

Cameron Park had to make some defining changes to traditional street designs
the streets in Cameron Park are exceptionally wide
more reminiscent of a runway than a traditional residential street
and the street signs are mounted close to the ground to avoid impeding planes with wide wingspans
Stop signs which are usually mounted at a minimum of five-feet tall in rural areas could basically be stuck directly into the ground in Cameron Park
are mounted at knee-height to minimize interference with taxiing planes
and some homes even have their planes parked outside
One home has a chrome twin-prop plane parked next to an orange Cessna-sized plane

the town of Cameron Park hosts a definitely-not-dystopian-at-all event called “Props
and Rodders,” where residents can bring their aircraft and/or classic cars to “show strength in community” at the Cameron Park Airpark
the show is primarily populated by vintage American cars with flame paint jobs
complete with live ‘80s rock tribute bands and a strong police presence to keep everyone feeling extra safe

"This addition not only supports the conservation efforts for Sumatran tigers

Hi! I'm Bella Popadiuk, your Neighborhood Reporter for Waco, Bellmead, and Lacy Lakeview.
WACO, Texas (KXXV) — Cameron Park residents voice concerns over speeding and safety in the area — numerous car wrecks have occurred due to speeding and blind curves.
Nicole Perez and Rusty Steed say they've been going to Cameron Park their entire lives.
"We use the park daily, so we see a lot of accidents over the past 20 years, mostly due to people driving way too fast," Rusty said.
The couple, who also live nearby, reached out to 25 News, saying they're scared for people at the park because of reckless drivers in the area.
"We see wrecks out here all the time," Rusty said.
The couple has been documenting car crashes for many years to help advocate for speed and traffic control devices throughout the park.
Driving through the park, you can see some of the damage from wrecks over the years.
Nicole and Rusty tell 25 News they understand the city has limited resources, but with Waco continuing to grow, they would like to see something change.
"Honestly, I don't want to see someone get killed and I don't want to see either one of us get killed," Nicole said.
In the past, the couple says they've reached out to the city to implement traffic control devices with no luck.
"It's not if it's going to happen, it's going to be when and I would just like to see something done before then," Rusty said.
The City of Waco says there are challenges associated with certain solutions such as speed bumps impacting emergency response times.
Booval has been slated for an upgrade and council is looking for ideas from the community to shape the project
Division 3 Councillor Andrew Fechner said council is looking to upgrade the park to meet the recreational needs of those who use it the most
“We really want to hear from those who are using the facilities what they would like to see in their park,” Cr Fechner said
“Council is looking at making improvements to the park including to the playground
and parking on the Easton Street frontage but we’re keen to hear the community’s ideas.”
Division 3 Councillor Marnie Doyle said as Ipswich continues to evolve and grow
it is important to ensure our parks meet the recreational needs of residents
“While Cameron Park has magnificent avenues of mature figs and wonderful fitness equipment
council has identified areas that could be improved including the playground which has reached the end of its useful life and the amenities block which doesn’t cater for people of different abilities,” Cr Doyle said
some visitors are parking under the figs and inadvertently damaging their roots
“We want the park to adequately cater for the local community and suit the character of the local area.”
The area this project will focus on is primarily from Easton Street frontage to the centre of the park
The project area does not include Swifts Sports Club or the existing Scout and Country Women’s Association buildings

A big Aboriginal painting at the entrance of park safer and big play ground toilets and maybe a few bbq areas the whole area should of fenced off tho
fenced dog park with a covered seating area for the hoomans and some doggy agility equipment 🙂
Skate park for the kids and maybe a bigger play ground for the younger kids 3-8 yrs old
A skate / BMX park for all ages More park equipment for all ages
A water park as previously mentioned would be good as well
including somewhere for the little ones for local parents at home with toddlers who’d like to get the kids out of the house
Better pathways for prams and wheelchairs (the deco paths near the playground are a wild ride!)
As locals we’ve used this park for BBQ/picnics and the playground
Definitely needs improved facilities and toilets for gatherings
An enclosed dog park would be popular also
A beautiful feature of this park already is the tree lined paths – it’s always a lovely stroll
Would be improved by a footpath along Easton street and pram/wheelchair access to the street (currently just gutters)
Definitely better playground equipment for the smaller kids and maybe a few more covered seating/BBQ areas instead of only one
A skate bowl for older kids and dog park area would work well also
And upgrade the toilet facilities and install security cameras to deter all the creepy men from loitering there
It’s a well known problem to the locals and puts us off going to the park a lot
Can’t wait to see the improvements ..
as some should agree with me here Ipswich has no beaches close in range .
but why not make it a water play area for all ages .
yes there’s river hart but why not make a bigger and better .
Facility similar to Bracken Ridge bike and Skate park
Scent gardens similar to Laurel Park in Toowoomba
Would love to see our park names with their Indigenous names
