infrastructure projects This includes an additional $2.5 million to be added to the $10 million already committed for the Canning Vale Regional Sports Complex acknowledged the efforts of the Canning Vale community and local sporting groups in advocating for improved facilities for both the community and local clubs “For too long our local community have put up with sub-par facilities at Clifton Reserve this new facility is long overdue,” she said “These facilities mean that more local children will be able to play community sport especially young girls who have long lacked the facilities to be able to enjoy local community sport.” President of the Canning Vale Senior Football Club “Currently the Football Club operates out of a shed which does not provide the necessary storage and changeroom capacities required by the Club,” he said “This new facility means we can have clubrooms and two ovals which will allow our club to grow our membership allowing all teams to be together on training and game days.” President Brendan Fowler also expressed his support for the announcement had to play home games at different grounds these new facilities mean we can have a home of our own for our members and community to enjoy and take pride in,” he said $2.5 million has already been committed by the City of Canning to support the development of a new Canning sports complex The facility would also include three natural turf fields and a new roundabout for easier access to the site noted that the WA Labor Party has already undertaken extensive work for a new sports precinct in Canning and he has been speaking regularly with local stakeholders to advocate for this project “Planning Minister John Carey has approved the necessary metropolitan scheme amendments submitted by the City of Canning They came into effect in November last year,” he said so I applaud the City of Canning’s efforts to refine their initial proposed project to properly assess and ensure the project application for the construction of 49 new townhouses and apartments on an 8,500 square metre State-owned site located adjacent to the new Nicholson Road Train Station in Canning Vale Known as the METRONET precinct housing project the development at Tulloch Way is set to deliver a mix of one and three-bedroom social and affordable homes This includes 18 townhouses and 31 apartments all built to Livable Housing Australia’s Silver Standard State Housing Minister John Carey believes the project will enhance social and affordable housing options in the area and is supported by a $3.2 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures that aims to deliver around 5,000 social homes across WA “The Tulloch Way project is a strategically located infill development through medium-density housing in central locations giving people on lower incomes ready access to jobs transport and amenity,” Minister Carey said “We are utilising key METRONET precincts and unlocking lazy government land through the Housing Diversity Pipeline to maximise the potential of the land for social and affordable housing – including developments in Pier Street and Smith Street.” more than 2,450 social homes have been added across Western Australia since the investment began with more than 1,000 additional social homes currently under contract or in construction Deputy WA Liberal Leader and Shadow Minister for Housing has criticised the government’s approach to addressing the state housing crisis claiming the project announcements are redundant if there aren’t enough tradespeople to construct the houses “We have seen a state government overheat the construction market with its own reckless spending on METRONET; it has literally sucked all the capacity out of the residential building sector in recent years,” Mr Martin said they prioritised a train line and not housing And now we see a state government scrambling to try and make up that gap in the shadows of the 2025 election.” Mr Martin said he believes irresponsible migration has contributed to the housing crisis “With a lack of dwellings and a skill trades shortage it’s a nasty set of circumstances that the housing market finds itself in the lack of homes has pushed up the private rental market as well,” he said “The mining sector also tells us they are still thousands of people short so there’s a lot of competition for those skilled tradespeople in Western Australia.” Southern River MLA Terry Healy is pleased to see the project announced and said he believes it will greatly benefit the area “This is such a great outcome for Canning Vale and surrounding communities,” Mr Healy said “These modern social and affordable houses will provide new homes to people in our local community and are located perfectly to take advantage of the upcoming nearby METRONET developments.” Canning Vale pavilion hit by vandalism after $1.5M upgrade The newly renovated Canning Vale Pavilion and Changerooms at Canning Vale Oval classification of land in Canning Vale from ‘Public Open Space’ to ‘Environmental Conservation.’ The areas to be rezoned are situated near Ranford Road After being independently assessed for its ecological significance the amendment aims to enhance the protection of the area which possesses significant biodiversity and conservation value aligning with the City’s Local Biodiversity Strategy “Over 300 specimens were identified as having significance and will be nominated for consideration to be included in the City’s Significant Tree Register,” the report stated “The ‘Environmental Conservation’ classification will provide a further layer of protection (additional to its classification as a Bush Forever Site) over the subject land from any future development.” only a portion of the open space is being reclassified to a conservation due to the presence of infrastructure such as the City’s Waste Transfer Station and the deferred Jandakot Eastern Link Road “The classification of ‘Environmental Conservation’ for the entire lot would affect the future operations of the Waste Transfer Station and conflict with the Jandakot Eastern Link Road’s (JELR) Metropolitan Regional Scheme (MRS) classification,” the report stated and eight providing comments on the Scheme Amendment “The Ranford Road bushland is a jewel in Canning’s remnant natural areas.” “Some of the City’s Elected Members do not want the Jandakot Eastern Link Road (JELR) ever constructed however these Elected Members have failed to acknowledge Council’s previous support of the JELR.” the officer’s the ‘Other Regional Road’ reserve for the JELR.” Mayor Patrick Hall supported the recommendations and reclassification along with all the City of Canning councillors highlighting the area’s ecological significance “Surveys have documented diverse vegetation types and transitional zones,” Mayor Hall said “Although no threatened flora species have been recorded on Lot 500 it may provide habitat for to rename all conservation category wetlands in the City of Gosnells two wetlands in Canning Vale have become the first to be officially renamed using Noongar names Formerly referred to as the Comrie Road wetland has now been officially named Maladjiny-ap Balyan Boodjar pronounced ‘mala-GIN-up Bal-yan BOOJ-ar which translates into English as ‘place of growing wetland.’ previously known as the Shreeve Road and Waterperry Drive wetlands has been officially named Nakaal Maya Balyan Boodjar pronounced ‘NAR-kal May-a Bal-yan BOOJ-ar,’ which translates to ‘peaceful place wetland.’ Chosen by local Indigenous Elders and the Langford Aboriginal Association Mayor Terresa Lynes said the names also have practical benefits as they help to identify previously unnamed wetlands less than 15 per cent of the parks within the City of Gosnells have an official name registered with Landgate so this program will help to rectify this while honouring the traditional owners of this area and recognising the enduring links between Country and culture,” she said “Registering place names with Landgate is important so that a single name for a place is recognised – allowing residents map providers and travellers to find our parks.” The city stated that the decision to rename wetlands aligns with a request from the State Government in 2019 and languages of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples the City is also working to officially name previously unnamed parks by registering names with Landgate once park improvement is complete A desire to find the truth and help victims was a strong driving force behind Senior Sergeant Jason Barnes’ decision to go for the top job at Canning Vale Police station The experienced officer has seen a lot in his 20 years in policing including stints in regional WA in Newman as a junior officer the State Operations Command Centre and most recently as Investigations Manager with Gosnells Police whether you’ve been in it for five minutes or 20 years it’s about the people you work with,” Senior Sergeant Barnes said but you try to minimise those bad days and focus on the wins you have with the community “You can have a file with a person you are working with and you don’t think it’s going to get anywhere and you finally get a lead on it and you put some hard work into that investigation and it comes to fruition “You tell that victim that from the outset you can’t guarantee they are going to have a positive outcome but when you get a result and to be able to tell them that and show you have actually done some work and the appreciation those people have when you have done some hard work Hard work is something Senior Sergeant Barnes is no stranger to having put in some long hours in his career “I spent four years at arson squad and did a lot of work on those long protracted investigations but when you have one that you get through and then you see the victim appreciates the work We don’t always get the results that we want but so long as we are always putting our best foot forward it’s not about getting the person convicted it’s about the truth and putting the best case forward to the prosecution and going through courts Senior Sergeant Barnes said he is very much looking forward to the challenges of his new role at the Canning Vale Police station “My main aim is to increase the emphasis on community engagement I want to build that strong connection between WA Police Canning Vale Police Station and the Canning Vale community,” he said “I think that is where our success is if we engage in joint initiatives and that team approach to fighting crime and making the community safer “Canning Vale is an interesting one because it’s a thriving community with a lot of houses under construction and a lot of people moving into the area It’s a very multi-cultural area because we are lucky here in Canning Vale because we have quite a diverse bunch of officers as well so that’s a good array to be able to meet that community expectation so there are going to be some challenges and interesting times ahead so we are better resourced than we ever have been and the staff are enthusiastic the recent news with the cost-of-living increase that has a flow on effect through to shop lifting and juvenile crime and the best way to tackle that is reach out and work collaboratively with the community and local businesses because that’s one small part of solving the puzzle,” he said Senior Sergeant Barnes said he is hoping his local knowledge and experience in his time at Gosnells Police station will be beneficial in his new senior role “I got to work really closely with local government and community in Gosnells and I think it’s not too dissimilar to working in Canning Vale there’s a lot of similar issues and there’s quite a crossover between the two so I felt it was a natural progression to be the Investigations Manager and then to move into the Senior Sergeant in charge role to take more of that leadership position,” he said It’s early days yet for Canning Vale’s new top cop “My biggest message to people is opportunist thieves see things such as leaving doors unlocked or leaving valuables in cars as a golden opportunity to steal stuff “You might not necessarily think that it means a lot but it is all about putting those pieces of the puzzle together and the timeline of events and your piece of the puzzle might add just that bit more to it “We have a big push on at the moment about CCTV footage and the Cities of Gosnells and Canning have a program where they provide a rebate which is really good because the more cameras we have out there the more crime prevention there is in place “It’s about everyone being alert and looking out for each other I think we have moved away from that neighbourhood vigilance a bit and Crimestoppers is really good because we can use intelligence we gather from those and act on that and that filters into some proactive work we can do.” Nashwa Ahmed, owner of Australian jewellery chain Blackbox Jewellers, has listed her executive-style Canning Vale home with an extra bonus for the lucky buyers.  Christy Sajan from Stratton Realty, who with colleague Jerin John has listed the property, explained that the donation of the ring is “a goodwill gesture to the buyers”.  “This is where they made their life, from struggling to making it quite big,” Sajan explained. “They had this property for close to ten years […] and they wanted to sell it to someone who was going to appreciate what they had.”  It’s a generous decision on Ahmed’s part given that Perth remains a strong seller’s market, where competition for listings is fierce and owners rarely need to go the extra mile to attract buyers.  In fact, when Sajan first heard about the ring idea, it raised red flags.  “Two things were running through my head – one was ‘S—, she’s going to knock up the price now’, and the second thing was ‘What’s wrong with the house?’  Perth house price growth could keep rising ‘at least 5-10 years’ and leave boom-bust cycle behind Bargain alert: The areas where house prices up 40 per cent, but still less than $500k 'Brave' buyer takes the plunge on Perth's gas mask property He joked that when she made the suggestion, he said, “Look, you don’t really need to do the diamond ring – if I sell it, just give me the diamond ring!”  But for Ahmed, the gift was never about making money – instead, she wanted to give the future owners a memorable story to tell.  The property is a unique offering for Canning Vale buyers, and includes a dedicated cinema room with black leather recliner chairs, theatre-style red curtains, and surround sound.   And the property’s entertainment offerings don’t stop there: the home also comes with a “MasterChef’s kitchen” that has four separate Bosch ovens and a mammoth 900 millimetre cooktop.  “They like to host parties and things like that, so I guess it comes in handy,” Sajan said.  A sleek black-and-grey colour scheme unites the home’s five bedrooms and two bathrooms, while acoustic black slat panels provide an unusual aesthetic touch on the walls.  The agents expect the house to sell in the early $1 million range. homes killed livestock and caused peak hour chaos on Monday afternoon The pair of 14-year-old boys allegedly started the fire just before 4pm on a semi-rural block on Mustang Rd the pair attempted to extinguish the fire but failed Canning Vale Fire and Rescue was the first unit on the scene at 3.43pm They reported back that strong winds were whipping up flames and the fire was spreading at an alarming rate An Emergency Warning was issued to the surrounding areas with local residents told to flee to safety And the Tonkin Highway was closed and cars evacuated – many directed by police to turn around and drive the wrong way down the highway to escape the fast-moving fire Over 45 units – many from north of the river – worked into the evening to extinguish the bushfire the fire was contained and controlled and the warning was downgraded to Watch and Act But seventeen units continued to patrol the area on Tuesday with reports of a flare up near Verna Street at around 9am A Watch and Act was reissued at 10.20am as the fire burned out of control again and residents living near the fire in Gosnells and Southern River asked to prepare to leave Firefighters and aircraft worked all day on Tuesday to get the ‘unpredictable’ fire under control Aircraft had to be grounded at one point after a drone was spotted flying nearby “Drones near bushfires risk lives – let emergency crews do their job safely,” DFES said The fire has reportedly caused extensive damage to over 150 hectares of bushland and private farming area There have also been unconfirmed reports of minor structure damage to farming outbuildings and death of an unknown number of livestock The two 14-year-olds were arrested at the Armadale Police Station and have since been charged with one count each of ‘Wilfully Light Bushfire’ While the Champion Lakes blaze still burned out of control on Tuesday both boys appeared in the Perth Children’s Court where one immediately pleaded guilty His lawyer said he’d been trying to light a camp fire that got away from him when an aerosol can was thrown in He tried unsuccessfully to kick the fire out with sand before guiding firefighters to the source of the to spotlight a few small businesses around Canning’s 16 suburbs – you did not disappoint Below we’ve compiled your responses for the best places to eat drink and play around the City of Canning area and we hope you have as much fun getting amongst it as we have (so far!): Kicking things off with a not-so-hidden gem, but an easy contender for most commented – Canning River Cafe but it’s got a rockin’ food menu that most importantly is a big hit amongst our gluten free and dairy free fam: “I have a friend with severe gluten intolerance and this was a godsend to find” Another “gem for gluten free food”, Twig & Sparrow is a brunch go-to for the people of Willeton From epic steak sangas to a host of naughty sweet treats very hard to say no to Okay so The Tribute in Shelley was a pretty comfortable first place when it comes to comments their all-day brunch menu combined with the Juicy Buns burger switch up at lunch time (and dinner Thursday-Sunday) is a pretty irresistible combo We love our beachside cafes in Perth, but when you’ve got a lovely river flowing through your suburbs there’s bound to be a few gems along the journey, just like Lo Quay River Cafe a friendly-to-all menu and nature playground for the kids make this one an absolute charmer Kynd Coffee Co. is tucked away under a church just off the hustle and bustle of Albany Highway with a daily blend courtesy of local outfit Blacklist Coffee Roasters and matcha direct from Japan for non-coffee lovers enjoy a similarly pared-back selection of bagels focaccia sandwiches and freshly-baked pain au chocolat Turns out there’s a stunning cake curator to be found in the City of Canning – Cake by Cake with some beautiful brunch options if you’re after something a little more substantial They’ll also whip up some custom cakes if you need Qoffee & Dates is the place to go for peace of mind along with a great selection of books if you feel like stopping in for a while One user made a point of mentioning you have to try their chicken congee (bubur ayam) – “perfect for the cold seasons!” We were hit with a bunch of great sushi places in the comments (check a couple more at the end), but Shushi in Market City definitely scored the most votes Another family-run joint that’s “the best place for your sushi fix” with an “amazing katsu chicken sando” – which is all we need to hear to be honest As far as great spots to sink a few cold ones with your mates, Waverley Brewhouse has been holding down things at Carousel for a while now with an on-site nanobrewery offering plenty of options to wash down their huge menu They’ve got plenty of TVs rocking sports as well making for a great shop + drink afterwards combo on the weekends Another spot with plenty of votes, it’s hard to go past a high quality, family-owned and operated neighbourhood grocer the only trouble is trying to get out of there without blowing the budget on their epic deli goods and sandwiches An equally delightful alternative is Shelley Foreshore, great for “walks, picnic and sunsets”. Enjoy city views along with a host of great community events regularly held there. A distraught mother whose two sons were caught up in a deadly youth brawl in Canning Vale has told how her children have been left traumatised by the violence. "They are hugely affected by this, worried, scared of repercussions and sad for the loss of life," she said. A teenage boy died and several people were seriously injured on Thursday after two violent incidents in Canning Vale involving a group of teenage boys. According to witnesses, two people were stabbed during a fight outside McDonald's at Livingston shopping centre around 3.15pm, with both found laying face down in bushes. Some of the injuries suffered in the violence. Around an hour later a vehicle ploughed into a group of teenage boys on Eucalyptus Boulevard in Canning Vale - killing one boy, 17, and injuring several others. A 20-year-old woman from Canning Vale - the alleged driver of the vehicle - has been charged with murder and four counts of attempting to unlawfully kill and will appear in Perth Magistrates Court on Saturday. According to the mother, whose two children were present during the park and McDonald's fight, a group of youths from Belmont had travelled to Canning Vale to fight a student from Canning Vale College in a park. Video of the fight showed two young males, one in a Canning Vale College uniform, punching each other as a group of students watched on and filmed the incident on their mobile phones. Police say the driver of this car allegedly crashed into a group of pedestrians. Credit: Nine News Perth In the footage, a person can be heard egging one of the males on as the pair wrestled. After the fight, the group moved on to McDonald's. Two teenagers were reportedly stabbed outside McDonalds in the first incident. Credit: Nine News Perth "[The Belmont group] randomly hit kids and tormented them, stealing bikes," the mother said. "[A Canning Vale College] kid got hit in the eye, he got his family down to help him get his bike back. The street where the teenagers were hit by a vehicle was cordoned off on Thursday. Credit: Facebook "One of his sisters got stabbed in the arm and a [Belmont group member] also got stabbed supposedly by accident by one of his own gang." The mother alleged the woman who was driving the car that mowed down several teenagers was the sister of the girl stabbed at McDonald's. "My boys could see the potential for violence and left encouraging all their friends to do the same," she said. "They felt helpless to help their buddies as they would be mobbed by the gang. "Gang violence has escalated in this area, kids having issues with other kids over petty things, it has led to a death now." Police are yet to confirm the details of the incident. Seven people were taken to hospital as a result of the encounters. Two 16-year-olds and a 17-year-old are in a critical but stable condition at Royal Perth Hospital. Two others were taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital but their condition was unknown while another two people were discharged from Armadale Hospital with minor injuries on Thursday night. The woman accused of running down five males in her vehicle allegedly hit and injured a 17-year-old from Byford, a 16-year-old from Lakelands, a 16-year-old from Wellard and a 16-year-olf from Beckenham. A 17-year-old teenager from Baldivis died from his injuries. A witness who lived on Eucalyptus Boulevard told Nine News Perth she rushed outside her home after hearing a car crash to find people scattered across the street. "There was a big accident right in front of our house so all of us we get out from the house... first of all we've seen the casualty next to the red car.. and then the next one just few metres away.. there's another four you know it's just scattered," she said. Homicide detectives are investigating the incident and would like to speak to anyone who has knowledge of the events that occurred at the park on Ranford Road and Livingston McDonald's.
