Elaborate deception was only recently discovered when judge visited government office to renew his ID card
Police in the Brazilian state of São Paulo have uncovered that a judge spent 23 years working under a false identity – and a distinctly British one
Born José Eduardo Franco dos Reis – a name fairly typical in a country once colonised by Portugal – he entered law school and served for over two decades as a judge using the false name Edward Albert Lancelot Dodd Canterbury Caterham Wickfield
In 1995, having just passed the public examination to become a judge, Wickfield claimed in an interview with a Brazilian newspaper that he was the son of English aristocrats
born in Brazil but raised in the UK until the age of 25
What police and public prosecutors are now calling a fraud was only recently discovered and came to the public’s attention following a piece by the news outlet G1
Since then, Brazilians have been left stunned
trying to grasp how a judge could sustain such an elaborate deception for so long
he visited a government office in São Paulo to renew his ID card
All his documents listed his “British” names
but the birth certificate registration number matched that of a Brazilian man named Reis
When police cross-checked the data – and fingerprints – they confirmed it was the same individual
Reis began presenting himself as Wickfield in the early 1980s
Police say he falsified his birth certificate
entered the University of São Paulo’s law school and began working as a judge in 1995
remaining on the bench until his retirement in 2018
When police uncovered the alleged fraud, he was summoned for questioning. This time identifying himself as Reis, he claimed that Wickfield was his twin brother
given up for adoption as a child to a noble British couple
He gave no further explanation for the names, though a piece by the Folha de S Paulo newspaper noted that they appear inspired by literature – such as the Round Table’s Lancelot or Mr Wickfield
the lawyer in Charles Dickens’s David Copperfield
A public prosecutor charged Reis with identity fraud and using false documents
Court officers have been unable to locate him
so he has yet to be formally summoned to respond
the São Paulo Court decided to suspend his pension payments as a retired judge – in February alone
he received R$166,413.94 (more than $28,000)
Working hours: approximately one day a week
Remuneration: to be negotiated as partly depends on knowledge

A small rural community has come together to save thousands of hens and other animals from Canterbury's rising flood waters
Forage Farm NZ in Motukarara has been inundated with flood water - like much of Canterbury - and animals soon became in need of a rescue
Farm owners Andy and Suzy Maxon told RNZ they moved the animals to higher ground multiple times "thinking we had 300ml up our sleeve"
"Sure enough we came out [on Friday morning] and the whole yard
He added the flooding was the worst they had ever seen
with much of the farm flooded by water that reached the top of their fences
The high ground where the chickens were moved was inundated with half a metre of water
As the Maxons attempted to execute a rescue plan
staff from a neighbouring farm - Willesden Farm - asked how they could help
"We had never even meet them before in our lives," Andy said
"What happened next felt like a dramatic episode of Country Calendar, utes rolling in one after another, trailers hitched and people turning up from all directions," the Maxons said in a post on Facebook
"It was just an absolute saviour really because we didn't have dry grass to put [the chickens] on," Suzy added
With the help of over 20 people including family
95 ewes and 16 cattle were rescued and moved to a neighbouring farm with dry ground
Their drinkers and feed trailers were also taken higher ground
The Maxons said a few of their sheds were also flooded
"People really sort of went out on a limb for us," Andy said
"The community support is just phenomenal..
I mean I don't know how many times I cried that day but it was a lot," Suzy added
the support they gave us to get our hens and our livelihood of that farm into somewhere where we could survive - yeah it was just amazing."
"You reminded us what the power of the rural farming community really means," the Maxon's Facebook post concluded

A state of emergency remains in place in Selwyn
Canterbury's civil defence and emergency management says rain is easing in the region and they will be spending the day assessing the damage
Publican Sarah McFarland said a breached stream ran through the entire lower level of her Little River Inn on Thursday
as well as a couple of other businesses on State Highway 75
and that sort of flooding has not been seen for half a century
and farmland in the area has also borne the brunt of heavy rain and floodwaters
McFarland said she was hopeful the inn would be back up and running soon

Little River was cut off until this afternoon after State Highway 75 was inundated with water
aggrieved residents are questioning if its impact could have been lessened if the council had lowered the level of Lake Forsyth before the storm hit
and it could have been avoided,” Little River Service Station worker Andy Davis said
“Farmers did approach the council about opening the lake and that was back early or late last week and nothing had been done.”
Davis is cleaning up after floodwater smashed the windows and upended freezers in the store
it might have been the quakes and that could have broken the glass
or it might have been the force of the water actually inside.”
Rob McFarland was mopping the floor of the hotel after it flooded for the first time in 150 years
“Obviously it’s quite a tragic event – a sea of water in here was the last thing we would have expected,” he said
His daughter Sarah McFarland said because the lake was left high
water coming down the mountain “had nowhere to go and came through the building”
the head of Three Waters said the flooding would not have been mitigated by opening the lake
“Flooding in Little River and surrounding areas is caused by issues higher up in the catchment and would not have been prevented by opening Lake Forsyth earlier,” Gavin Hutchison said
Diggers opened the lake to the sea yesterday afternoon
“We have to time this to coincide with the southerly swells dropping to ensure the channel stays open and has the intended impact
and so we can ensure the safety of our staff and contractors when we carry out the work."
“Having the lake open before the rain does help

The main road to Akaroa on Banks Peninsula is still blocked
days after intense rainfall flooded State Highway 75
The highway from Christchurch has been closed from Motukarara to Little River since Wednesday night
and extreme caution is still advised on the remainder of the route to Akaroa
Photos and videos shared by residents on social media show fallen trees and other major damage on the highway
which is the only road connecting communities like Akaroa to the rest of Canterbury
Aerial footage captured by the Christchurch City Council on Thursday evening showed farmland submerged below floodwaters across the peninsula
and Minister for Emergency Management Mark Mitchell noted the full extent of the damage would not be clear until the water subsided
The council also reported large cracks on Lighthouse Road in Akaroa
"The assessment found there [is] no immediate danger to the evacuated properties or other properties in the vicinity," the council posted on its Facebook page
we may require houses further down to evacuate at short notice."

A weka who travelled from the West Coast to Christchurch over the Alps has been returned home after his roadie adventure
The endemic bird caught a ride after a couple left their car door open at their campsite in Buller Gorge while packing up from their Easter getaway
The gear was split between campers Kim Ranger and her partner Ian's two vehicles
hidden in dog blankets in Ian's ute despite multiple stops
He got home to Christchurch and hopped out and didn’t notice the weka," Kim said
I opened the back door of the Ranger to get something there it was in the rear passenger footwell
what on earth do you do with a weka in Christchurch?”
Kim said they contacted the after-hours vet
SPCA and DOC but were told to care for the bird until morning
Apart from setting off the car alarm at 7am and covering the inside of the ute with poo
Kim said the weka didn't seem distressed
after her last name and given its temporary home
Ranger was collected by DOC and checked over at the South Island Wildlife Hospital where — apart from being slightly dehydrated — was in good health and was released back to the area from where it hitched a ride
DOC Biodiversity supervisor Craig Alexander said the episode was a reminder for people to check their vehicles for any wildlife when camping
“There are no wild weka in Christchurch so we wouldn’t want to see them accidentally introduced here.”
we also had someone accidentally bring two wētā over from the West Coast in their wetsuits,” said Alexander

Christchurch’s Court Theatre has made its grand return to the city
more than a decade after losing its home due to damage caused caused by the February 2011 earthquake
A new location was found in Addington following the quake
people queued to get a look at its brand new forever home
The first reactions as people walked through the doors were all very positive
I’m really excited to see lots of shows here,” one theatregoer said
It’s such a moment for the city," another added
The state of the art facility on Gloucester St houses two theatres – one large auditorium that seats 377
stopped by with his family to give it a once-over
"We thought we'd pop down and see the new opening
and I’m quite interested in architecture and was quite excited to see the building," his father said
Christchurch Mayor Phil Mauger described the project as a turning point for the city
“Its return to the CBD is more than symbolic – it’s a celebration of what we can achieve when we work together," he said
the theatre is expected to grow significantly
It currently produces 20 shows annually with a combined audience of 120,000
Court Theatre executive director Gretchen La Roche said the new building "represents a transformative moment for the city’s arts scene”
Artistic director Alison Walls called it symbolic and stirring
“It feels beautifully fitting we open our new home with this deeply personal national story."

The students were nominated by their teachers to take part
Hornby High School principal Ian Murray said those who were chosen had the "best opportunity to grow resilience and character
to help them through the challenges that some of them may have been facing at the time"
Their final task was to deliver a speech about what they’ve learnt

The Canterbury Regional Council says there was an agreement to open Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere to the sea last Tuesday but sea conditions prevented it from happening before the rain storm hit
with people in Selwyn telling RNZ they are frustrated the lake was not opened to the sea earlier
Taumutu farmer Tim Sanson said there had been good warning that a fairly serious weather system was on the way
He was expecting around 80 millimetres of rain but received more than 150mm on Thursday
which was "a fairly significant chunk of rain in a short period of time"
"That is a lot more than what we were expecting from the forecast
but to get more than sort of two inches in one hit here
Sanson said the decision-making around opening Lake Ellesmere was a long-running "bugbear" for many locals
"It's a bit like having a bucket that's full of water
and potentially we should be doing that with the lake with a bit more management," he said
which required heavy machinery and hard work
"It did seem crazy to me watching the bulldozers head down there at high tide
I think it was yesterday morning or the morning before
to start preparing for opening with the southerly roaring in," he said
said he thought the lake should have been opened sooner
He woke at 4am on Friday to find six inches of water through his home after a nearby creek overflowed
"If the council had opened the lake last weekend when it was nice and sunny
then there would have been far less room for the water to move to the lake and travel on its way out to the sea," he said
also questioned why officials did not act earlier to open the lake before the heavy rain caused widespread flooding
She said she struggled in vain to get officials to open Lake Ellesmere to help the rising floodwaters drain away on Thursday evening
She rang the Christchurch City Council and the Canterbury Regional Council after she got home to find water lapping on neighbours' doors
The regional council told her it was after hours
to call again in the morning and that the lake's opening was out of staff hands
Adams said her property was a disaster zone
with a repair bill estimated to cost tens of thousands of dollars
The council used diggers to create a channel between the lake and sea at certain times
governed by a 1990 water conservation order and resource consents held jointly with Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu
ECan general manger of hazards Leigh Griffiths said consultation for a lake opening began on Monday and by Tuesday afternoon
a joint decision had been made to open the lake
"We can only open the lake once a joint decision has been made
and the lake height reaches a minimum of 1.13m (from 1 April to 15 June)
The lake conditions were not met until Tuesday 30 April," she said
Griffiths said earthworks had begun to open the lake but in current sea conditions it would not be successful because the cut would fill in and it was unsafe for people to operate machinery in the surf zone
"We are watching conditions closely and the lake will be opened to the sea as soon as weather and sea conditions allow
This is likely several days away at the earliest," she said
Emergency Management Minister Mark Mitchell said he was confident officials had made the right call not to open Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere to the sea earlier
Mitchell met Environment Canterbury staff and mana whenua on Friday about the lake
"It is very apparent there is a lot of work and focus on how they manage Lake Ellesmere and the fact that there was a request to put in to widen that access," he said
"All the information that they had in relation to that was what informed their decisions and they're all united in the fact that they've done the right thing and they've made the right decisions and they've done what they could."
Mitchell said he had full confidence in that decision but he was prepared to hear more about the community's concerns over the the lake's management

slips and road closures to parts of North Canterbury
but local leaders say they came out relatively unscathed
There were reports of slips in the Lees Valley
But local councils say recent investment in flood defences ensured the region was protected against the rain
Waimakariri District Council chief executive Jeff Millward said the rainfall was similar to rain events in 2014 and 2021
But the council has made significant investment in stormwater infrastructure over the last 10 years and established a specialist flood response team last year
Hurunui Mayor Marie Black said the rainfall was significant
but not as severe as council staff first feared
On Thursday, state of emergencies were declared in Selwyn district
Christchurch and Banks Peninsula as flooding and slips threatened homes
and Millward said his council was close to joining them
‘‘We definitely had a nervous first night on Wednesday and from then on we were watching river levels closely.’’
Unofficial figures indicate there was 236mm of rain at the Ashley Gorge in 48 hours
‘‘Some of those numbers are quite alarming
I think Christchurch is talking about this being one of the top five rain events and we weren’t too far off
with rainfall you never quite know where it’s going to fall.’’
Millward had high praise for Environment Canterbury’s rivers team
which kept Waimakariri council staff up to date with river management information
The council invested more than $20 million on stormwater improvements in Kaiapoi
the council set aside funding to establish a specialist flood response team
It led to staff proactively setting up pump stations in response to the heavy rain and having five civil defence teams in an overlapping roster to monitor the event
‘‘There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes that people don’t see — including planning for the worst
which could involve evacuating large portions of the district,’’ Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon said
‘‘From my travels around the district it was clear the improvements and significant investment especially in the new pumps in Kaiapoi made the difference
as well as having pumps and sucker trucks on standby in other trouble spots.’’
Hurunui District Council chief executive Hamish Dobbie said there was some road damage
and several roads and fords remained closed
Black said the impacts varied across the district
and there were high flows in the Waiau and Hurunui rivers
She said there will be follow up work for staff with service requests and assessing damage
‘‘These things are not without cost to the council
but we will work through it diligently and responsibly.’’
Both councils will continue to monitor the situation
with updates available on their respective websites and Facebook pages

A large-scale Southland farming company has been fined $82,500 for discharging effluent in a manner which could have entered waterways
Gladvale Farms Ltd committed the offending on two occasions in October 2019 at an Oreti Plains farm
The company was sentenced on Monday after being found guilty in February following an August 2024 judge-alone trial
Legal action against the company began when Environment Southland alleged the Resource Management Act had been breached through effluent discharge on or into land which could have resulted in the contaminant entering water
It was alleged the defendant irrigated at night without monitoring due to employees being off duty
The judgement said although it was not necessary to prove the contaminant had entered or impacted the waterway
there was sufficient evidence to show it had
Steps taken to mitigate against the discharge were not sufficient
including using a digger to move effluent further into a paddock
Judge Steven told the court that 90 percent of the fine would go to the council

Stuff has previously reported fines against the company of $27,000 in 2018/19

Harvey said an attempted burglary and two burglaries were reported at three further premises on Windsor St
Police then received a report that two people had entered a Tay St premises and demanded cash and items
Harvey said information suggested the incidents were linked
"Two vehicles were seen in the vicinity of some of the incidents
"The other vehicle is described as a dark-coloured car," said Harvey

Emergency services were notified of the fire at around 3pm on Monday
Fire and Emergency NZ said the building was "totally involved" in flames by the time crews arrived
and Papatoetoe were in attendance at the blaze
"Everyone was out at the time and there are no reports of injuries."
FENZ said the fire was being treated as suspicious
"A fire investigator is attending to determine cause and origin."
Pakuranga Rd was closed for nearly two hours in both directions with road users advised to avoid the area
"Investigations into the cause of the fire at the McDonalds are underway," police said
told 1News he heard a couple of explosions coming from the restaurant as the blaze began
He said he heard "one or two" explosions
The restaurant was adjacent to a Z petrol station and 250 metres along the same road from Pakuranga College
A staff member at the service station said they had closed their fuel pumps and there was "huge fire and huge smoke" coming from the fire
The Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre Courts were also closed this evening due to the blaze
Auckland Transport said several bus routes
Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown thanked emergency services who had been responding to the incident
"Please follow the advice of emergency services
A McDonald's spokesperson said the McDonald's restaurant in Pakuranga had "suffered significant damage" in the fire
"Procedures were followed to raise the alarm and safely evacuate staff and customers
McDonald’s is assisting emergency services as they begin the investigation into the cause of the fire."
Oscar Piastri maintained his advantage in the Formula 1 championship fight by winning the Miami Grand Prix this morning for his fourth win through six races this season
Piastri has now won three consecutive F1 races for McLaren Racing
where he and teammate Lando Norris are trying to dethrone four-time defending champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull
Piastri is the first McLaren driver to win three consecutive F1 races in 28 years; Mika Hakkinen did it with a win in the 1997 season finale and then victories in the first two races of 1998
He widened his lead over Norris in the driver standings to 16 points
while Verstappen trails Piastri by 32 points
New Zealand driver Liam Lawson was forced to withdraw his Racing Bulls car after 38 laps following an early collision with Australian Jack Doohan
Norris earned his first Grand Prix victory last year at Miami when he snapped Verstappen’s two-year winning streak at the course surrounding Hard Rock Stadium
Norris also won the sprint race yesterday — Piastri dominated but a late safety car cost him the victory — but Verstappen won the pole in qualifying
who announced the birth of his first child Friday morning
has been determined to disprove the myth that fatherhood would make him a more conservative driver
It was evident as he darted away at the start and then aggressively held off Norris’ challenge for the lead
The Red Bull and McLaren were side-by-side and Norris was trying to edge ahead of the Dutchman
Norris said Verstappen forced him off track and there was nothing he could do but try to avoid running into a wall — but F1 took no action against Verstappen
But it really just how it is with Max — it's crash or their pass.”
Norris recovered and picked his way back toward the front
but not before Piastri took control away from Verstappen on the 14th of 57 laps
McLaren has decided it will allow Piastri and Norris to race each other cleanly without team orders
and Norris was cleared to challenge his Australian teammate for the victory
Norris was able to close the gap but could never catch Piastri and settled for second in a 1-2 finish for McLaren
The two held a nearly 40-second advantage over George Russell of Mercedes
the hard work that's gone in,” Piastri said of McLaren
I think we got lapped twice and to now have won the Grand Prix by over 35 seconds to third is an unbelievable result of the hard work of every single person.”
Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes was sixth and Charles Leclerc was seventh after Ferrari ordered Lewis Hamilton to give his teammate the position in the closing laps
was ninth for Williams and Yuki Tsunoda was 10th for Red Bull
Doohan ran into Lawson on the opening lap and then crashed on the second lap — a showing that won’t quiet chatter the rookie is on the verge of being replaced at Alpine by Franco Colapinto
There have been media reports in Argentina that Colapinto will replace Doohan at F1’s next race
It was dismissed at the start of the Miami weekend by Alpine team principal Oliver Oakes
who indicated “as it is today” the Australian would still be in the seat at Imola
“I think it was a sponsor from Argentina off-camera giving his view on Franco
I’m sure there’s a lot of people in Argentina who’d like him in the car this Sunday,” Oakes said about the speculation
“We’ve been pretty open as a team that that’s just noise
But it’s natural that there’s always speculation there
Jack is our driver along with Pierre (Gasly),” he continued
who didn’t complete two laps this morning and finished last
has yet to score a point this season through six races
His best finish was 13th at the Chinese Grand Prix
Lady Gaga gave a free concert Saturday night in front of 2 million fans who poured onto Copacabana Beach for the biggest show of her career
(...) Thank you for making history with me,” Lady Gaga told a screaming crowd
kicked off the show at around 22.10pm local time with her 2011 song Bloody Mary
Cries of joy rose from the tightly-packed fans who sang and danced shoulder-to-shoulder on the vast stretch of sand
Concert organisers said 2.1 million people attended the show
switching between an array of dresses including one with the colours of the Brazilian flag
Some fans – many of them young – arrived on the beach at the crack of dawn to secure a good spot
“Today is the best day of my life,” said Manoela Dobes
a 27-year-old designer who was wearing a dress plastered with a photograph from when she met Lady Gaga in the United States in 2019
Madonna also turned Copacabana Beach into a massive dance floor last year
The large-scale performances are part of an effort led by City Hall to boost economic activity after Carnival and New Years’ Eve festivities and the upcoming month-long Saint John’s Day celebrations in June
“It brings activity to the city during what was previously considered the low season – filling hotels and increasing spending in bars
generating jobs and income for the population,” said Osmar Lima
the city’s secretary of economic development
in a statement released by Rio City Hall’s tourism department last month
Rio’s City Hall said in a recent report that around 1.6 million people were expected to attend Lady Gaga's concert and that the show should inject at least 600 million reais (NZ$178.3 million) into Rio’s economy
Similar concerts are scheduled to take place every year in May at least until 2028
Lady Gaga arrived in Rio in the early hours of Tuesday
The city has been alive with Gaga-mania since
as it geared up to welcome the pop star for her first show in the country since 2012
Rio’s metro employees danced to Lady Gaga’s 2008 hit song LoveGame and gave instructions for today in a video
A free exhibition celebrating her career sold out
While the vast majority of attendees were from Rio
the event also attracted Brazilians from across the country and international visitors
More than 500,000 tourists poured into the city in the days leading up to the show
according to data from the local bus station and Tom Jobim airport
Rio’s City Hall said in a statement yesterday
made a cross-continent trip from Colombia to Brazil to attend the show
“I’ve been a 100% fan of Lady Gaga my whole life,” said Serrano
who was wearing a T-shirt featuring Lady Gaga’s outlandish costumes over the years
the mega-star represents “total freedom of expression – being who one wants without shame”
Rio officials have a history of organising huge concerts on Copacabana Beach
Madonna’s show drew an estimated 1.6 million fans last year
while 4 million people flooded onto the beach for a 1994 New Year’s Eve show by Rod Stewart in 1994
that was the biggest free rock concert in history
sixteen sound towers were spread along the beach
Rio state’s security plan included the presence of 3300 military and 1500 police officers
Among those present were Lady Gaga admirers who remember their disappointment in 2017
when the artist cancelled a performance scheduled in Rio at the last minute due to health issues
“She's the best artist in the world,” the 25-year-old said
I love you” in Portuguese rose from the crowd behind him
whose real name is Ella Yelich O'Connor
which also displayed what appears to be the album cover art — an X-ray of a pelvis
"100% written in blood," the website read
The new album's announcement came a week after she released her latest single What Was That
The song's music video was filmed at a mysterious pop-up event in New York City's Washington Square Park that was initially shut down by police. The event ended up going ahead after all, and fans who stayed got to hear the new song for the first time.

Kardashian’s lawyers said she will testify in person at the trial starting Monday and scheduled to run through May 23

Kardashian told investigators she was taken to a bathroom next to her bedroom and placed in the bathtub
Her attackers fled on bicycles or on foot and she managed to free herself by removing the tape from her hands and mouth
She had also removed the tape from her feet and rushed to her stylist’s room
She called her sister Kourtney to tell her about the theft
Kardashian told investigators that she had not been injured
adding that she wanted to leave France as soon as possible to be reunited with her children
According to her testimony and that of the concierge
at least one of the suspects had a handgun
The gangsters stole many pieces of jewellery
estimated to be worth more than US$6 million (NZ$10 million)
Only one piece of jewellery — a diamond cross on platinum that was lost during the suspects' escape — has been recovered
Two of the accused have partially confessed to the crime
is one of two suspected robbers who allegedly entered the apartment
his genetic profile was found on the tape used to gag Kardashian
who was waiting for him in a parked car at a nearby train station
The second robber said he tied up the concierge with cables but did not go up to Kardashian’s apartment
said he acted as a lookout in the ground-floor reception area
He said he was unarmed and did not personally threaten Kardashian
but admitted he shared responsibility for the crime
Abbas was arrested in January 2017 and spent 21 months in prison before being released under judicial supervision
he co-authored a French-language book titled I Sequestered Kim Kardashian
is the second alleged robber suspected of entering the flat
although he was filmed by CCTV cameras and numerous telephone contacts with the other co-defendants show his involvement
The other defendants are suspected of providing information about Kardashian’s presence in the apartment
Others are accused of playing a role in the resale of the jewellery in Antwerp

Lorde has dropped her new single What Was That after weeks of cryptic posts and teases that set fans buzzing
It's the lead single from her upcoming fourth album and her first original solo release since 2021's Solar Power
which is three minutes and 28 seconds in length
Some fans had been lucky enough to hear the track in full earlier this week.
On Wednesday, Lorde posted a picture of Washington Square Park yesterday with the caption "tonight 7pm".
Fans flooded the park an hour before she was supposed to appear, with photos shared of eager fans scaling trees to catch a glimpse of the singer.
Shortly before she was to perform, the Royals singer took to social media to tell fans police had shut the event down.
"Omg @thepark the cops are shutting us down," the message read.
"I am truly amazed by how many of you showed !!!
"But they’re telling me you gotta disperse ... I’m so sorry."
However, the pop-up event ended up going ahead after all, with fans who stayed getting their first full airing of Lorde's new single.

About 150mm of rain fell in the district over two days
causing surface flooding issues at the end of last week
Ashburton District Council infrastructure and open spaces general manager Neil McCann said the early estimate to repair the damage to local roads is $100,000 to $150,000
“The roading team and our maintenance contractor HEB photographed about 350 locations and there was extensive surface flooding
“We will inspect the road fully once all the water has drained away to gauge the full condition
The money to cover the repairs will come out of the operational budgets
“We have a minor events budget for this type of work.”
there were still several surface flooding-related road closures in the district
on the Hinds River will have to be re-instated and a grader will tidy up Hakatere Potts Road for two to three days where there are quite a lot of potholes
The NZ Transport Agency/Waka Kotahi had several pothole repair sites on the state highway network under temporary 30km/h speed limits
there were other rain-related issues for the council
including the re-emergence of a roof leak at Networks Centre stadium
“We’re doing an assessment of the EA Networks Centre roof to look again for the source of the leaks there
“Other council buildings coped with the prolonged rainfall
but like many other building owners around the district
we noted a few leaks across our community facilities and buildings
“We’ll have to reinstate all the stockwater intakes that are on rivers and streams
including Pudding Hill and Methven Auxiliary
As part of the second Ashburton bridge project
NZTA would be doing testing over the next few months which will provide information on existing ground conditions
This involves digging holes in the existing roads and paddocks
which will be refilled as testing is completed
Testing will take place on South Street and Chalmers Avenue north of the Ashburton River/Hakatere and at several locations both on and off-road south of the Ashburton River/Hakatere

He may be revered for his Premiership and International success at South Sydney
but legendary forward Bob McCarthy can be regarded one of the most influential figures in Bulldogs history
After breaking the hearts of Canterbury a decade earlier in the 1967 Grand Final
McCarthy was sought after by Club executives in the 1976 off-season
To usher in a new era of success in Blue and White
McCarthy was 31 years old heading into 1976
But according to many in the Rugby League landscape
Finally ready to hang up his boots after thirteen glittering seasons
it was a conversation with legendary supremo Peter ‘Bullfrog’ Moore that brought McCarthy to Belmore
It proved to be one of the most pivotal signings in the Club’s history
“I was going to retire,” McCarthy stated on Fox League’s League Legends
“Souths told me I was too old and over the hill and all that type of stuff and I was quite prepared to go home and retire...until Peter Moore came down to Giles’ [Baths] one day
I saw him walking across the pathway there at Coogee
he was the bloke who wouldn’t hang around gymnasiums
“What are you doing Bullfrog?” McCarthy queried
“I want you to come play for the Bulldogs.”
We’ve got all these young kids coming through
"There’s this little red-headed kid from Wagga called [Steve] Mortimer
we’ve got this other tall kid called [Greg] Brentnall
“We’ve got the Hughes’; these two blokes coming from England
Michael Adams and Eric - another Hughes!”
it was Head Coach Malcolm Clift who orchestrated the move
citing the need for someone with McCarthy’s status and experience as the perfect mentor for his fledgling side
Mark Hughes and Greg Brentnall needed someone to show them what success looked like if they were to win the Club's first Premiership since World War II
“I didn’t think he was past it and in October I told the Canterbury management committee that I wanted to buy him,” Clift recalled in ‘The Bulldogs Story’
he said he wanted to see what Souths wanted to do first – he was a loyal man
“But I knew he would be better off at Belmore
and I told him he could have two great years with us
Clift urged the Canterbury management committee: “Have faith in me – I've got faith in McCarthy.”
With International half Tim Pickup nursing a severe knee injury
Clift appointed McCarthy as the side's skipper for the 1976 season
He would go on to score a try in their thrilling 25-24 opening round victory over Balmain
leading the side to the finals with 25 appearances and 12 tries in total in a vintage showing
Canterbury had been in contention for a drought-breaking title but just couldn’t quite put the nail in the coffin
despite qualifying for the 1967 and 1974 NSWRFL Grand Finals
it was McCarthy’s legendary intercept try that saw a Premiership elude the likes of Bulldogs Hall of Famers Les Johns and Johnny Greaves
Upon arriving at Belmore in the off-season of 1976
according to the barrel-chested second rower
it was quite obvious what needed to happen if Canterbury were to go all the way – some good old-fashioned team bonding
“The first training session there we trained pretty hard
we got them all together,” McCarthy explained
“A lot of those guys at Canterbury sold insurance
They could only see their clients at night because they were at work during the day
They’ve got to come to training and then they’ve got to come to the pub and mix and mingle
'If they finish at one or two o’clock in the morning
“The first training session we’ve gone back there
and I was about 34 or 35 then so I was pretty tired after training
I remember soaking myself up in the bath and I’d take longer than the other blokes
“When I walked out to where the barbeque was
I could see the bloke pulling the stems out and packing up
everyone’s had a good steak and a couple of beers’
He said they’re all good mates and that type of stuff
McCarthy's Triple: Minor Semi vs St George
Go back to the pub and get some more kegs and get some more steaks
and we always went to the pub then and we mixed and mingled
“The Mortimer’s and the Hughes boys just loved throwing the footy around
“Then they started making all those Grand Finals
and they started getting some better players and up came all the Premierships in the ‘80s.”
They couldn’t have been more polar opposite in age
but another significant addition to the 1976 season was teenage halfback Steve Mortimer
who debuted in the first of a magnificent thirteen seasons at the Club
And while a fifth-place finish may have been seen as a downgrade from previous seasons
Clift’s side now had more experience and enthusiasm to call upon
1980 Grand Final Highlights: Bulldogs vs Roosters
McCarthy’s mob had upset the back-to-back Premiers in Eastern Suburbs 22-13 in the first week
before making another significant stamp by disposing of 1975 Grand Finalists St George
And while their magic run eventually ended at the hands of a championship Manly outfit by just three points
who also thrived on a flamboyant style of play
was a big beneficiary of the veteran’s arrival
the legendary no.7 credited McCarthy as the perfect mentor for the youthful side
the wonderful thing about Bob McCarthy is that he was a mentor
but to a lot of the forwards as well,” Mortimer explained on League Legends
I am very blessed to have played with the great Bob McCarthy
and for him to have a big effect on my style of play
While McCarthy eventually would return for a swansong season at South Sydney
his influence at Belmore had already begun to bear fruit
Two seasons after he called time on his career
his influence was realised as ‘The Entertainers’ kick-started an unprecedented era of success at the Club in the 1980s
headlined by the same youngsters he nurtured
Mortimer was at the forefront of the Bulldogs’ four Premierships across the decade
notably as Captain in the back-to-back victories in 1984-85
his final career appearance in the 1988 Grand Final would be alongside Bob’s son

Sydney’s Olympic Park cops a bad rap a lot of the time
midwinter night and 90 per cent of the stadium’s 83,500 seats are unoccupied
it bears an uncanny resemblance to a low joint
any atmosphere generated by the diehards in attendance dissipating into the cavernous surrounds
the venue originally known as Stadium Australia is one of the last places people want to pay good money to watch a sporting event that they could be watching from the comfort of their own sofa
what is now called Accor Stadium is a special place
to myriad State of Origins and NRL grand finals and Bledisloe Cup showdowns
when Canterbury and South Sydney battled it out in front of a crowd of 65,305
the largest attendance at a regular-season rugby league match in the code’s 117-year history
The huge crowd at Accor Stadium for the Good Friday clash between Canterbury and South Sydney.Credit: Getty Images
Canterbury and Souths fans have endured their fair share of dismal nights at Homebush
where their clubs have been co-tenants for years
the Bulldogs spent eight years as finals spectators
Souths haven’t featured in the play-offs in their past three campaigns and last year finished above only wooden spooners Wests Tigers on the ladder
Neither Canterbury nor Souths were the hottest ticket in town during their lean years
But that didn’t mean their supporters had found a new team
They’ve just been waiting for an excuse to emerge from the woodwork
Five consecutive wins had the Bulldogs on top of the table
had won four of their first six since the return of master coach Wayne Bennett
With ticket sales already tracking towards a bumper turnout
the Bulldogs released $10 seats in the top tier
What better way to spend Good Friday than by helping to create rugby league history for less than the cost of a Big Mac and fries
Souths were entitled to hope their supporters would be well represented
But as seats filled in the final minutes before kick-off
it became obvious the cardinal-and-myrtle jerseys in the crowd had been swamped by a sea of blue and white
The Bulldogs capitalised on their home-ground advantage
Deafening roars encouraged the Bulldogs to muscle up defensively on their own goal line in the early exchanges
Soon enough they were applying pressure at the other end
and another from back-rower Sitili Tupouniua
were ample evidence of the Bulldogs’ modus operandi
Bulldogs supporter Ahmed Barnzy arrives at Olympic Park on Friday.Credit: Sitthixay Ditthavong
Souths might have fielded a star-studded back line featuring Latrell Mitchell
but Canterbury’s forwards simply kicked the front door down
When second-rower Jacob Preston extended their lead by crashing over early the second half
the Rabbitohs were facing a 26-0 deficit and 35 minutes of catch-up football
Cameron Ciraldo was thrilled that his team was able to provide its legion of fans with a 32-0 victory
“Today was a really important day for our club,” he said
the amount of people that came out to watch us
to get 65,000 and break that record is something we’ll always get to remember … it just shows how strong our club is
how many people have worked hard to get that sort of support and the fans that have come out to support the boys on the back of their hard work
“I’m just really proud to be a Bulldog today.”
was disappointed with the result but tipped his hat to the crowd
“It was great to come in and see the stadium so packed ..
most of them must have been Canterbury supporters
because no one was leaving when the scoreboard was pretty high.”
in Ciraldo’s debut year as an NRL head coach
his team was slaughtered 66-0 by Newcastle at the same venue
24 hours before the biggest game of the season
he declared: “It’s been part of the vision of this club to become the biggest club in rugby league
That would have seemed laughable not so long ago
but Ciraldo now has 65,305 reasons to support his theory

not quite the full 80 minutes Mick has been waiting for - but a very good first 30 minutes was more than enough for a comfortable win over the comp leaders
Brisbane's second half was a comedown from the first 40 minutes
but it would have been hard to maintain that level of excellence
The Bulldogs were much improved in the second half
The tries Brisbane conceded were all from errors

11:51amThu 24 Apr 2025 at 11:51amFULL TIME: Brisbane Broncos 42 def
Adam Reynolds was the perfect puppeteer behind a Payne Haas-inspired Brisbane forward pack that dismantled competition leaders Canterbury in a stunning 42-18 win
Reynolds left the field in the 75th minute
which he injured when scoring a try in the first half
the Broncos did a Bulldogs on the Bulldogs at Lang Park on Thursday night
pulverising them in the middle in a riotous first half but also dazzling them out wide to inflict the first loss of the season on the visitors
It was hardly believable that a Bulldogs side that had not conceded a point in the previous two matches trailed 34-0 at halftime
Brisbane had missed just three tackles to their opponents' 24
The visitors were ill-disciplined and had forward Josh Curran and Sitili Tupouniua sin-binned
for hits on Payne Haas and Brendan Piakura
Tupouniua was put on report for a second time for lifting his knees into Piakura's head while in possession in the second half
a minute before winger Marcelo Montoya was binned for another high hit on Piakura
Reynolds had scored a try and laid on three
two with pinpoint chip kicks for Deine Mariner to score
He put rampaging second-rower Xavier Willison in after two minutes and never looked back
In the next set his halves partner Ben Hunt fired a cutout pass and winger Jesse Arthars had his 10th try of the season
The performance of Haas was on another planet
He set Reynolds up for his try with a pass after rampaging into a hole
Haas's first 33-minute stint yielded 140m from 15 runs
switching from wing to replace injured Reece Walsh
was accomplished at the back in just his third starting appearance in the role and played tough after injuring a shoulder
His left-side raid and silky pass put centre Gehamat Shibasaki over in the corner
got the Bulldogs on the board courtesy of a neat Viliame Kikau pass
Bulldogs second-rower Jacob Preston crossed after a Toby Sexton bomb
and Bronson Xerri was the recipient of another Kikau pass
Mariner was binned for hitting Kikau high to become the fourth sin-binning of the match
Bulldogs playmaker Matt Burton was also put on report for a high tackle on Billy Walters

11:40amThu 24 Apr 2025 at 11:40am72' TRY: Bulldogs score off fortunate penaltyMBy Michael Doyle
They were given a fortunate penalty for a lifting tackle
which live did not look to be illegal from Brisbane's Kotoni Staggs
Staggs's own legs were the ones that flicked into the air
The Bulldogs take full advantage of this opportunity
and a nice shift to the left allows centre Bronson Xerri to score in the corner
11:24amThu 24 Apr 2025 at 11:24am58' TRY: Bulldogs score despite being down to 12 menMBy Michael Doyle

Brave One returns from a spell as a gelding
He was a 0.8L winner on debut at Randwick on a Heavy 9 defeating Mayfair
He was a little off his next 2 starts but looks to have returned in nice order since having the ultimate gear change
He really caught the eye closing off nicely when 0.3L 2nd in a recent Rosehill trial
Island Dec is a really classy filly from the Price yard
She was terrific recording a 0.2L victory over 1250m here at Canterbury 1st up
She was fair last in much tougher company in the G3 PJ Bell Stakes at Randwick
She gets a nice run from Gate 5 in a race with those on top of the speed will likely be tiring late

No NRL team will win a match when spending 30 of the 80 minutes a player down
They were bashed up in the middle of the field by Payne Haas and Pat Carrigan and out-skilled by Adam Reynolds
Haas finished the night with 255 running metres
a 42-18 loss was always going to be on the cards
After taking the opportunity to add two more points with a penalty goal
Brisbane add a 80th-minute Billy Walters try to complete the scoring
but it was still more than enough following a blistering first 40 minutes
The Brisbane players will head home tonight thinking that a finals run is on the radar
Adam Reynolds hurt his shoulder in the first half but played on
He just hurt it again and this time his night is over
It’s reasonable to ask why he was still on the field considering what happened earlier and with the win in the bag
For a match that’s been as good as over since about the 25 minutes mark of the first half
there is still plenty of aggro in this game
Canterbury want to make amends while Brisbane are seeking to pile on more pain

but also reflecting on my own time in the Navy — the things I did
I also find myself wondering what it would be like to serve now
who’ll be getting up early on Anzac Day to remember those who came before them
my naval career took me all over the world
I thought that was it — my sea time was over
I figured I wouldn’t want to get back on a ship again
But I had this idea that maybe I could go to sea without having to work
(Some people might say officers didn’t work anyway
So I went on a couple of ‘‘civvy’’ cruises to try to get it out of my system
when I was asked to put the uniform back on and join a 12-day trip to the Auckland and Campbell Islands on HMNZS Canterbury
It was a chance to see how the modern Navy works
how things have changed — and to see if I still fitted in (many years later
So it was with a mix of nerves and excitement in February
and headed up the brow (gangway) to join the ship in Bluff
walking down the passageway towards the 12-berth cabins
Even though I’d never served on this version of Canterbury (my HMNZS Canterbury was a frigate)
The crew’s quiet confidence the job would get done was infectious
and the ‘can-do’ attitude of everyone really stood out
Today’s sailors aren’t that different from yesterday’s
— but sailors are still the heart of the ship — they work together to get the job done
It’s not that different from what my mates and I were doing 30 years ago
This amazing opportunity to live the military life again
I’m confident that those serving today will be standing at cenotaphs around New Zealand in 25 years
and they will carry that legacy into the future
So what will I be thinking about this Anzac Day
I’ll be thinking about those who came before me — those who gave the ultimate sacrifice
and those who came home and helped build New Zealand
But I’ll also be thinking about those who are out there now
doing the business of the New Zealand Defence Force
They’re living the life that we who served before them once lived
but you can never take the Navy out of the sailor
Canterbury enjoyed a dream run into the finals for the first time in eight years last season as Cameron Ciraldo spearheaded a revival at Belmore
The Bulldogs were sparked by the arrival of Stephen Crichton with the three-time premiership winner guiding the club back into the title picture
The Dogs have continued to build their roster in the off-season with Sitili Tupouniua arriving and Leo Thompson set to join the club in 2026 while they attempt to establish themselves as a premiership hope

Canterbury have granted Tom Amone an immediate release from his contract
The Bulldogs only announced the signing of the prop from Leigh last May on a two-year deal
granting the release so he can take up an opportunity at another club," the Dogs noted
"The club wishes him and his family all the best for the future."

Amone had previous stints with South Sydney and the Wests Tigers
before finding his feet in the Super League
he established himself as one of the game’s leading forwards
Yet the 28-year-old was unable to convince Cameron Ciraldo of his quality after joining the Bulldogs in the pre-season
"He has been the best front row forward in the UK for the past two years and he will certainly be a boost to our forward stocks," Canterbury supremo Phil Gould said at the time of his signing
he was unable to crack the 17 at any point during this season with the likes of Daniel Suluka-Fifita
Harry Hayes and Jack Todd jumping above him in the pecking order
he has been forced to ply his trade in the NSW Cup this season
Amone has been heavily linked to a return to the Super League with Hull KR and the Leopards believed to be the front-runners for his signature

crews saved two people and two dogs stranded in floodwaters when their car stalled
Fire Chief John Genefaas told the Herald one of the crews rescued two motorists and their animals after they drove their car into the flood waters and stalled
“We have a rural appliance which is 4WD and quite high so it can drive into the flood waters,” he said
“We picked them up and organised some accommodation for them.”
The fire brigade thanked local workers on Facebook
“There are people out there that have been tirelessly working day and night in these very difficult and challenging conditions
“Those people are the roading crew from GSL and Fulton Hogan
I’m sure there are others too that deserve recognition
Well done and thank you for your hard work.”
