of a $250 million revitalisation project “The Capalaba Town Centre Revitalisation Project is set to transform the area behind Capalaba Central Shopping Centre into the urban heart of Capalaba,” she said “Works on the first stage of this project are expected to start in early 2025 and will see a new state-of-the-art library building community and innovative arts space and a new customer service 8 Councillor Tracey Huges said that during the planned closure Capalaba Library customers are encouraged to visit one of Council’s other libraries or consider reserving library items for collection from the 24-7 Library Lockers located outside Cleveland Library The Mobile Library will be located near Capalaba Place on Saturday 2 November and then again from Monday 4 November to Saturday 9 November returning to its usual schedule from Monday 11 November Customer service teams will be ready to help as usual at their locations in Cleveland and Victoria Point Mayor Jos Mitchell said the community would be consulted on two draft change scenarios that demonstrated how growth in the area could be realised over time. “Noting the significance of the site and its status as a ‘high priority location’ for growth, Council resolved at its General Meeting this week (22 January 2025) to undertake non-statutory consultation that will help shape the future of the area,” the Mayor said. “This is preliminary consultation on draft land use proposals only and is one of the first steps in the development of a Local Area Plan (LAP) for the site, building on earlier conversations with key stakeholders and businesses in the subject area. “The plan will be developed in line with Council’s LAP framework to provide a clear direction for future growth in the area taking into account zoning configurations, access and movement arrangements, urban design outcomes and future infrastructure upgrade requirements.” The Mayor said one of the main purposes of the LAP initiative was to identify opportunities for growth and consolidation in locations that were well serviced by or in proximity to existing infrastructure, public amenities, services, employment, and lifestyle opportunities. “Like many neighbouring cities, Redlands Coast has 66,000 dwellings with an average household density of fewer than 2.5 people, predominantly in larger 4–5 bedroom homes,” the Mayor said. “Our city must identify and promote opportunities for greater housing diversity and increased density consistent with the objectives identified in the Queensland Government’s Redland Housing Strategy 2024–2046. “All proposed growth in the Jones Road area will happen over time and in a manner that respects and compliments the character of the surrounding neighbourhood. “It is also important to note that this is a vision for the future and the existing property rights within the site are safeguarded under Queensland planning legislation.” The site is positioned 200 m from the Capalaba principal activity zone and currently contains a mix of low-to-medium density housing, commercial spaces and vacant land. It is located to the south of the planned Birkdale Community Precinct and is close to the existing open space network, which includes John Fredericks Park. Division 8 Councillor Tracey Huges said the community’s input would help shape a shared vision for the site. “We eagerly invite feedback from local residents and the broader community on the Jones Road to Old Cleveland Road Local Area Plan, which we envision as a vital part of our city’s future,” Cr Huges said. “The growth scenarios provide for lifestyle enhancements – including active pathway extensions with linkages to key sites such as Birkdale Community Precinct – and are intended to inform a potential future amendment to City Plan to allow for increased residential dwelling capacity and diversity. “Council has formulated ‘high’ and ‘medium’ change scenarios to facilitate discussions with the community about potential future land uses and development opportunities in the area. “Feedback from the community during this preliminary consultation stage will inform the development of the draft LAP, which will go out for a second round of public consultation before being considered for adoption at a future meeting of Council.” Public engagement activities are scheduled to begin toward the end of February or early March. In due course, Council will inform key stakeholders within the study area and the broader community about this through multiple communication channels, including Council’s website and social media platforms. Capalaba club manager Erin Cameron has offered a massive and heart-felt ‘thank-you’ to the support team that have facilitated a return to trialling and racing at the popular straight track next week A victim of Cyclone Alfred flooding in early March the boutique race precinct has since been the centre of a busy work program by staff and industry volunteers for a swift-as-possible return to racing but just how much this track is treasured by the racing fraternity was certainly borne out again by the amount of help that we have received since the floods,” Cameron said “Our staff have been in here working hard as well as so many industry participants - owners and trainers “They have volunteered so much of their time to come and help out getting rid of all the debris and doing all of the other work that has had to be done “The flood levels this time were higher and although we were very lucky that the flood water was quite clean but there was still a film of mud over everything we have gone through the process of washing the whole place out with high pressure hoses There has also been some fence repairs done and some walls and doors repaired which didn’t help and delayed things a few days.” Cameron said trialling would be held on Monday “We had successful test trials today (Friday) and so we are all set for trialling Monday and a return to racing Easter Sunday,” she said “We have had so much feedback from trainers that they can't wait to get back and trial and race at Capalaba “There have been so many phone calls and just generally people reaching out to check to see how we are and to also see when trialling and racing is starting again “All the staff as well are so eager to get back on track and that delay for a few days with the recent rain was again so frustrating.” Cameron said the track and facilities would be back to 100% when racing restarts but everything will be back to normal when the lids fly when we are back racing on Sunday week (April 20),” she said “It still amazes everybody how quickly the track comes back in such great order and that of course is due to our fantastic track curator Trevor (McSherry) “Trevor's track is looking beautiful again.” Cameron said the focus would quickly return to top quality racing as soon as the all-clear is given “We have some very good features coming up such as our Young Guns Residents of Redland City Council are advised to MONITOR CONDITIONS for localised flooding. If you find it hard to move quickly or have special or medical needs: If you are a tourist, visitor, camper or caravanner: At today’s General Meeting (21 August 2024), Redland City Council endorsed the details of the financial commitment necessary for the detailed design and delivery of infrastructure that will connect current and future uses within the precinct. The precinct incorporates Council land at 377-385 Redland Bay Road and 17 Runnymede Road, Capalaba, that already features Council’s environment centre IndigiScapes as its centrepiece, and is the location of community disability support organisation Myhorizon’s main facility. It also will become the home of RSPCA Queensland’s purpose-built Wildlife Hospital and Centre of Excellence, expected to cost in excess of $20 million and planned for completion in the next few years. As Chair of today’s Council meeting, Deputy Mayor Julie Talty said Council was providing 1 hectare of land in the new Redlands Coast Eco Precinct to RSPCA Queensland for the wildlife hospital’s development, just east of the IndigiScapes Native Nursery. The entire precinct is about 16.7 hectares. “The funding endorsed for the Redlands Coast Eco Precinct is timed in consideration of the development aspirations of the RSPCA and the existing community, environmental and education uses of the site,” Cr Talty said. The proposed funding comprises approximately $4.4 million for new precinct connections – such as car parks, walkways, road connections, and drainage – and approximately $1.9 million for outdoor space renewals including safety and accessibility improvements, landscaping, and playground renewal. Detailed design work is planned to start in the current financial year. Cr Talty said the Redlands Coast Eco Precinct would bring significant environmental and community benefits to the city through its educational and practical focus on caring for habitat and wildlife. “It brings increased opportunities for social connection, cohesion and inclusion, while also encouraging economic activity by attracting a wide range of users and investments,” she said. It is expected that visitor numbers will increase significantly with the development of the precinct. Conservatively, those numbers could well double from the annual 50,000 visits currently recorded by Redlands IndigiScapes Centre, Cr Talty said. “Redlands Coast Eco Precinct is poised to be a premier, visitor-ready and immersive ecotourism attraction in parallel with the wildlife hospital’s construction and opening,” she said. “It will be an ecotourism destination where people of all ages and backgrounds can connect with nature, while championing environmental stewardship, and building community awareness, engagement and advocacy for native wildlife and habitat.” RSPCA Queensland Wildlife Hospital and Centre of Excellence will include native animal wards, specialist medical equipment, outdoor enclosures, surgical suites and an ancillary plantation for specific animal fodder. It will not cater for domestic animals. Cr Talty said the centre would bring a state-of-the-art wildlife care facility to Redlands Coast which would significantly help local and regional wildlife, as well as help train future wildlife veterinarians and specialists. The centre’s educational spaces will include an auditorium and training rooms which will provide important opportunities to build community awareness and engagement. for his ‘well-connected’ racer This ambitious project presented several challenges the most significant being the acoustic treatment of the vast cavernous space designed to accommodate a range of sporting and recreational activities The Acoustic Timber™ panels in a stunning shade of Tasmanian Oak proved to be the ideal solution 19 Mar 2025 • 3m read • View Author The Capalaba State College Sports Complex was born from a vision to bridge the gap between the college’s junior and senior campuses, and to provide a state-of-the-art facility that could serve both the school and the wider community. Commissioned by the Queensland Department of Education and created by the architectural collaboration between Cottee Parker Architects and JSTN Architects, the new edifice was expertly brought to life by Kane Construction in just over six months. The overall ambition for the project was to create two modern precincts: an innovative learning centre, and a sporting and recreational facility spanning a staggering 3,500m². “In terms of the sports building, the college wanted to ensure that the precinct would service the surrounding community,” explains Justin Giovenco, Director of Brisbane-based JSTN Architects. As such, the magnificent new complex was designed to include large sporting courts, full-size performance areas, GLA spaces, theatre spots and seating. Additionally, the design vision focused on a warm timber aesthetic, making it crucial for the selected wall and ceiling products to feature a woodgrain finish that would blend seamlessly with the laminate timber-look flooring. The project team needed a solution that could effectively absorb sound without compromising the visual aesthetics or interfering with sporting activities. Furthermore, it was crucial for the chosen solution to align with the project’s commitment to creating a healthy, sustainable, and enduring environment for future generations. Brice Gifkins, the Managing Director of BMG Building & Construction Services adds that, in his opinion, Autex Acoustics’ Acoustic Timber beats wood in every way. “It’s quicker and easier to install, comes with a Group 1 fire rating, and there’s no maintenance required,” he says. “Plus, you get the acoustic properties.” From a vision of bridging campuses to a reality that serves an entire community, the Capalaba State College Sports Complex is a testament to architectural ingenuity and the transformative power of acoustic solutions.
