supermarket and a 75-place childcare centre – approved amended plans reveal a total transformation is on the way for the largest residential landholding in Carlingford
The masterplanned community – to be known as The Carling – will consist of five residential buildings ranging from seven- to 18-storeys in height
A total of 2000m2 of retail space will be provided across two of the buildings
along with approximately 592 car parking spaces
“The proposed buildings will sit comfortably within their surroundings

After a conciliation conference was arranged by the Land and Environment Court between Meriton and the City Parramatta
an agreement was finally reached to approve the amended plans
The re-worked plan now divides the original proposed development at 263-281 Pennant Hills Road into two different stages
It means the approved proposal will now only include the eastern portion of the site along Pennant Hills Road – known as stage one
The remaining R4 zoned western portion of the site along Shirley Street and RE1 zoned portion of the site
will be subject to a future development application
The approval comes after City of Parramatta entered into a Voluntary Planning Agreement with Meriton at the end of last year to deliver a range of community infrastructure through the development
community centre and open space for the local community

Two Chinese restaurant workers have been rushed to hospital after a violent fight allegedly broke out between the pair at work
NSW Police attended the Crystal Seafood Restaurant in Carlingford in Sydney's north-west on Sunday afternoon after reports of an allegedly stabbing in the kitchen.
'Police were told two employees had an argument before one man allegedly stabbed the other man multiple times in his head, face and arms,' a police statement read.
A man, 63, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital for further treatment.
Another man, 46, believed to be a chef at the restaurant was arrested at the scene.
He was taken to hospital under police guard for treatment for a minor head inquiry.
He was later released from hospital and taken to Gladesville Police Station, where he was charged with wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
He was refused bail to appear in Burwood Local Court on Monday.
Investigators established a crime scene and spent much of Sunday afternoon examining the restaurant and interviewing witnesses.
Inquiries into the alleged melee continue.
The restaurant was open for yum cha diners at the time of the incident.
The venue describes itself on its website as Sydney’s 'premier Chinese seafood restaurant.

in park lands and heritage-sensitive environments along 1.3kms of the alignment
The award-winning ‘green track’ design used 81 per cent less concrete in its construction
and delivers environmental and health benefits
a new 5.7km walking and bike riding path between Carlingford and Parramatta opened to the public in May 2023 as part of the project
providing residents and visitors with more active transport options
Cyclists will benefit from 160 new bike hoops located near the majority of the light rail stops across the alignment
with the trams equipped with four bike spots
Parramatta Light Rail has converted the former single-track T6 Carlingford Line between Camellia and Carlingford
which ran two train services per hour and stopped 70,000 drivers each day at the historic level crossing on Parramatta Road
This will provide residents with more frequent services and better connections to town centres
With the Parramatta Light Rail now operational
bus routes 535 which ran along the Carlingford to Parramatta alignment during construction and testing
and the 900 Parramatta shuttle bus will be withdrawn from service
around 22,000 people are expected to use Parramatta Light Rail every day
The new L4 Westmead & Carlingford Line is the first stage of the Parramatta Light Rail

With the 45-metre-long vehicles now running in both directions between Westmead and Carlingford
the ‘trial running’ phase will involve a series of interactive drills designed to replicate potential incidents and experiment with recovery plans
with the timetable set to be finalised over the next few months
the line is set to support 150 jobs in Western Sydney
with trams set to run every 7.5 minutes during peak times between Westmead and Carlingford via the Parramatta CBD
Now officially named the L4, this new stretch of Light Rail will join the L1 Dulwich Hill Line, L2 Randwick Line and L3 Kingsford Line as part of the Sydney Light Rail network and, in line with the government’s plan to provide a better-connected, more affordable city
there’s a focus on building more affordable housing close to the line
The rezoning for Parramatta's Church Street North precinct has come into effect
allowing up to 1,800 new homes to be built in the area. And that's not the only change that's happening out west – according to Minister for Transport Jo Haylen

"Throughout the junior competitions they know each other and will have that mutual respect

and we have got some players from the Bulldogs and Parramatta coming to support the game."

if there was a gala day where two teams nominate that they want to play each other
"It's a good finale to the season and next year when they see each other the ice has been broken
and the parents and kids all know each other
"No other sport does anything like that and with no finals it could be something to look forward to at the end of the season."

A fisherman has died after he fell from a boat at King John’s Pier in Carlingford, Co Louth, on Monday morning.
He has been named locally as Gearóid McMahon (62) from Blackrock, Co Louth, who was formerly from Limerick city. It is understood that he fell from a fishing boat in the harbour.
The local coast guard and gardaí attended the scene when the alarm was raised around 8.30am. Garda divers began an operation to recover the remains of the man.
Mr McMahon is survived by his wife Patricia and three children. Funeral details have yet to be announced.
Mr McMahon’s death occurred close to the location where healthcare worker Ruth Maguire drowned in 2019. She had travelled to the village for a hen party when it is believed she fell off the pier on the night of March 16th.
Her family later called for safety measures such as a guard rail to be installed at the location.

The history of railways in New South Wales is a colourful one and signalling equipment has played a large part in making it safe
A tribute to the Carlingford Line which carried millions of passengers over 132 years
John Bennett constructed a new private railway line from Clyde to the Rosehill racecourse by 1888
along with the new Sandown Line to service the industrial area along the banks of the Parramatta and Duck Rivers.
A few years later in 1896 Simpson built another private railway that extended from Rosehill to Carlingford
primarily to transport produce to Sydney.
Both the Bennett and Simpson private railway lines failed to prosper and by the end of 1896
both railways were in the hands of bank.
By 1901 the NSW Government had bought the lines and recommenced passenger railways which have serviced the local community until this year.
From 2020 the Carlingford Line will closed ahead of conversion to the Parramatta Light Rail which will connect Westmead to Carlingford via the Parramatta CBD and Camellia
the Carlingford Rotary Club and Parramatta City Council teamed up with the local community and enthusiasts to celebrate 132 years of railway history.

Dundalk-Carlingford's Cllr Andrea McKevitt has asked that Louth County Council consider extend bin emptying at weekends in the Cooley Peninsula to April
to help cut down on the amount of litter in Carlingford Village during busy weekends
when the village sees an influx of people due to the improving weather
In her motion at the Dundalk Municipal District April meeting which took place on 8 April
Cllr McKevitt said that she was: "Calling on Louth County Council to extend the bin emptying at weekends in the Cooley peninsula to the month of April
Director of Place Making and Physical Development
said that: "The weekend bin collection service in north Louth during the summer season was extended in recent years to incorporate the period May-August. There are no plans to extend this period for the 2025 season."
consideration will be given to facilitating a bin collection service over the forthcoming Easter bank holiday weekend which falls during the month of April."

Cllr McKevitt welcomed the news that a bin collection service over Easter was being considered
but asked at the April meeting that the local authority reconsider its decision going forward
A 30 year old man who attacked a woman who was running on the Carlingford/Omeath greenway
has been jailed at Dundalk Circuit Court for five years and nine months
The victim had previously told Judge Dara Hayes that she was in the early stages of pregnancy at the time
and was terrified for herown life and that of her baby
Niall ‘Nyol’ Tumelty with an address at Coolderry
Carrickmacross pleaded guilty last June to assaulting the woman causing her harm and falsely imprisoning her at the Greenway
Last November the court heard the woman was running on the greenway when she saw a man 250metres ahead and as she approached him
he asked how far she had run.She told himshe was training for a 10k and continued with her run
but heard rushed steps and “instinctively knew he was going to attack her”
Tumelty pushed her to the ground and she ended up on her back pinned down by her arms
and he fled the scene when she shouted that there was a couple coming behind her
while another witness, who was also out for a run
saw the defendant pulling his hoodie over his head and laughing
He could see that he had blood his cheeks and mouth and scratches on his face and knew something was wrong
Tumelty was arrested after gardai received a report of a man acting suspiciously in a caravan park
He claimed he was in the area to meet a friend
but that friend told gardai they had made no arrangements to meet
The defendant said he had been drinking and didn’t know how he got his injuries and denied attacking the woman. However
his DNA was found under her fingernails. He had three previous convictions and was on bail at the time of the offence
The Senior Defence counsel said his client had a history of mental health issues
a diagnosis of schizophrenia and a history of drug induced psychotic episodes. In her impact statement
the victim said she will “never forget the force of hitting the ground and being terrified not only for my life but for the life growing inside me”.
The sentencing hearing was then adjourned as the Probation Service had sought more time to prepare a report the court had previously sought.
Mr Tumelty’s barrister told the resumed sentencing hearing yesterday
that the Probation report said his client accepted responsibility for his actions and expressed his remorse
He added the defendant began using cannabis aged 13 and its use was problematic by the age of 17 and between 2020 and entering custody he was engaging in substance misuse including alcohol and cocaine but he is currently drug free
Tumelty had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and drug-induced psychosis and had four voluntary admissions to the acute psychiatric facility in Cavan – the most recent in July 2022
He has been complying with taking his anti-psychotic medication and was assessed as being at moderate risk of offending
in which the defendant told the injured party and Judge Hayes that he was ashamed of his behaviour
He said he had let himself down and “I’m sorry I can’t turn back time”. He added “I’ve got off drugs” and stressed “I really hate them now”
Judge Dara Hayes said what should have been a perfectly ordinary day for the woman was turned into a horrific experience
He noted the defendant had previous convictions for trespass and drunk driving and has not been in contact with his family while in custody
He had found school a difficult place and has worked as a farm labourer
factory operative and in construction and had abstained from drugs from 2013-2015 and from 2019-2020 and is now currently drug free. He is also fully compliant with his medication since May '23
The judge added the defendant does not seek to hide behind his mental health difficulties and has taken responsibility for his actions and has expressed his remorse and shame. He also has an insight into the impact of his offending behaviour on the victim and was seen as suitable for probation supervision and someone who would benefit from supervision by the service
Judge Hayes noted the woman was left emotionally
psychologically and physically scarred by her ordeal and worry and fear meant new motherhood was not the joy it should have been
Her confidence and independence are gone
she is always afraid and it has left her vulnerable in every sense and the sense of safety and security that she once enjoyed is gone.
The judge noted that the woman's family are also victims of what occurred and said a lone woman woman attacked by a stranger in her locality creates fear
He imposed a sentence of 3 years and 9 months for assault causing harm and a concurrent sentence of 6 years and 9 months for the false imprisonment charge
which he suspended the final 12 months of for two years
on him entering a good behaviour bond and placing himself under the supervision of the Probation Service for two years post-release
As part of the suspended portion of his sentence
the defendant must also engage with and cooperate with the Probation Service
attend all his appointments with them and follow all directions
treatment for his mental health needs and offence-focused and victim awareness work.
The sentences were backdated to May 20th 2023 to take into account time Mr
A stretch of the Carlingford Lough Greenway from the Albert Basin in Newry to Victoria Lock has reopened following maintenance work carried out on the popular path
The greenway was closed to cyclists and walkers following Storm Eowyn in January
Repairs have been made to fencing and the path has been restored to its former width with gravel laid over the entire route
Currently the surface would be difficult for bicycles with narrow tyres and indeed any cyclist will find it tougher to cycle on than a tarred surface but It would be hoped that the gravel will bed down with use
Works are ongoing between Victoria Lock and the border in the final piece of the route that will see Newry linked to Carlingford giving a safe route for cyclists and walkers
The section will comprise of approximately 1km of elevated boardwalk between the Newry River and the Omeath Road
Mourne and Down District Council have said that this should be open in early summer 2025

U10 Coaches Kevin Carolan and Gearoid O’Neill saw their young charges travel to Dublin on April 6 to compete in the Aviva All Ireland Rugby Festival having qualified from Leinster earlier in the season.
Well-wishers included former Leinster and Ireland Full-Back, Rob Kearney, who sent a video of support and encouragement to the players for their big day out.
Three very competitive inter-provincial games later, the youngsters got a tour of the National team dressing rooms and a priceless photo-op with the Triple Crown!
The Knights U13 boys have reached the quarter-final of the Leinster McGowan Plate, having beaten a resolute Boyne RFC in thrilling fashion away in the last round.
Team manager, Ray Ryan reports that the lads are very much looking forward to welcoming New Ross RFC to the Foy pitch in Carlingford this Saturday April 19.
Contesting the John McKevitt Memorial Cup against Dundalk RFC last Saturday, April6, the Knights U14 girls returned victorious in an absorbing end-to-end game.
That makes it two years in-a-row for the Knights, last year’s U16 boys having also overturned their Dundalk counterparts.
Jack Redpath, the Knights Director of Rugby, thanked both Dundalk Girls and Bob McKevitt, the late John McKevitt’s son, for making the day a memorable one.
The challenge game, named in honour of John, both player and former president of Dundalk RFC as well as one of the founding members of the Carlingford Knights RFC, is a fitting tribute to a much-missed giant of the grass roots game.
Elsewhere there was heartache for the Knights U17 boys last Sunday as they lost out to Longford RFC in their Leinster Division 1 final in Ashbourne.
Sometimes the ball just doesn’t bounce your way, that is not, however, to take away from a strong showing from Longford who ultimately lifted the cup.
Knights Coach John McGoey is rightfully proud of the oldest age grade in the club having made it to the final in the first place, stressing that, there is not only experience, but learning in it for the players.
They now turn their attention to their up-coming Northeast Leinster Plate final.
A happier outcome awaited three of the Knights U16 girls who, as part of an amalgamated team with Ardee and Boyne RFCs, lifted the Leinster cup in their division.
Taking the initial letter from each club’s name, the ABCs as the team is known, came from 17-10 down to defeat another amalgamated team from Ashbourne and Balbriggan; the final score, a resounding 53-29.
Leah White, Sara Behan and Molly Anne Moore (vice-captain) bear lightly the distinction of being, now and in perpetuity, the very first Knights club members to hold that rare and most cherished of articles, a Leinster winners’ medal!
