In the shadows of Melbourne’s western suburbs
a high-profile figure in Middle Eastern organised crime
met a violent end in a meticulously executed roadside ambush on Heysen Park Way
long associated with the Comanchero bikie gang and under scrutiny for drug trafficking
was gunned down in a late-night hail of bullets
The calculated attack bore all the hallmarks of a gangland hit
leaving Sherwani’s bullet-riddled white Volkswagen abandoned on the nature strip with its headlights still glowing—a chilling beacon in the dark
Witnesses reported a volley of gunfire around 10:30 pm on Thursday
with investigators later recovering a weapon and bullet casings scattered outside a red-brick home
reportedly staggered down nearby Hele Court
Several residents bravely attempted first aid
but the underworld veteran succumbed to his injuries shortly after being rushed to hospital
Sherwani’s death echoes the recent ambush killing of his ally
who was fatally shot in a shopping centre car park at Craigieburn last October
This latest slaying adds to a grim tally of violence tied to Melbourne’s gangland wars
sparking a heightened presence of homicide detectives and the elite VIPER anti-gang taskforce at the scene
Forensic experts combed through the crime scene on Friday morning
dissecting the shattered remnants of Sherwani’s final moments
As detectives examined the Volkswagen’s bullet-riddled frame
residents described the terrifying sound of up to ten gunshots ringing through the quiet suburban street
Victoria Police confirmed they had been alerted to reports of gunfire and responded swiftly
or information about the ambush to step forward
Sherwani’s notorious career had seen him endure multiple violent retaliations
including a string of firebombings at his residence
But the relentless feud within Melbourne’s underworld has claimed yet another figure
as a city braces for the ripple effects of this brazen execution

Caroline Springs is through to a fifth straight Western Football League women’s grand final
The Lakers became the first team through to the grand final with a good win against minor premiers Werribee Centrals on Saturday
The Lakers jumped out to an 11 point lead at the first break and the margin was still seven points at the break
Three goals to one in the third quarter increased the lead to 19 points at the final break
The Lakers managed to hold the momentum in the final quarter to win
Lakers coach Alex O’Shea said it was pretty exciting to be through to another grand final
“We’re rapt and we’re still letting it sink in,” she said on Sunday
“Werribee was on top and we knew it would be a challenge and we played some really good footy
“We weren’t expecting anything coming into the game.”
O’Shea said going into the finals they knew every team in the top four could beat each other in what had been a really competitive season
she said the playing group stuck to the task at hand all day
“I thought the girls played a great team game,” she said
“They played as a team and played their role for the team and did it for the four quarters
“Werribee came at us at different times and we had the ability to stay composed and regrouped and that ability got us the win.”
O’Shea said the experience of the past few years in finals had really helped in some of those pressure moments
She said you don’t know what to expect in finals
but there are key moments you have to take and they took them
“We focused on what we want to work on as a team and we know in those moments what to do,” O’Shea said
Jacinta Kondis continued her good form with five goals up front for the Lakers
Jordin Williamson and Hannah Herring were named the best
O’Shea said she didn’t think there were any standouts and that it was a real team effort
The Lakers now have the week off before the grand final
They will face the winner of Werribee Centrals and Parkside Spurs preliminary final in the grand final
O’Shea said the grand final would be a whole different ball game and they will forget about what has happened in the past
It will be a different preparation for the Lakers heading into this grand final
“We’ve never had the week off and gone straight into the grand final,” O’Shea said
“We’ve played in the one versus two game on a number of occasions but always played the following week
We’ll look to manage training and emotions for the next two weeks
“We’re grateful to be there and we’ve worked hard all season
We’ll recover well and prepare for whoever we face.”

Filipino-inspired cafe Pecks Road marries your local hip brunch spot with your lola’s (grandma’s) house
Albin and Arbi Lawang wanted the space to feel like their own lola’s living room
That’s where they spent most afternoons as kids
eating her lutong bahay (which translates loosely to “home-cooked food”)
The venue’s name also references their childhood: it’s the street they grew up on in north-west Melbourne
Whether you have a sweet tooth or a savoury craving
the menu here offers a range of house-made treats
Other flavours have included ube (purple yam)
Other sweet staples include apple fritters and strawberry crullers
For lunch there’s a handful of sangas and toasties
Albin recommends the signature Reuben with juicy thick-cut pastrami
house-made habanero and Pecks Road’s secret south-west sauce
The spam-and-egg bagel dials up the crunch with crisp chicharrón (pork crackling)
It calls to mind two Filipino classics: lechon (spit-roasted pig) and spamsilog (spam and eggs)

A prominent gangland figure and former outlaw motorcycle gang member has been murdered in a brutal ambush in Melbourne’s western suburbs
Hawre Sherwani died in hospital after he was shot in Caroline Springs about 10.30pm on Thursday
Closed-circuit video footage obtained by this masthead reveals Sherwani frantically knocking on the door of a house in Heysen Park Way
before slumping to the ground and appearing to lose consciousness
Homicide Squad detectives have launched a major manhunt for his killers; however
the list of suspects will be extensive given the former Comancheros member’s previous involvement in drug trafficking

Sherwani survived a failed murder plot less than a year ago
when two men wearing balaclavas blasted more than 20 shots from an Audi S3 as the 33-year-old walked his dog in a Fraser Rise park
he was unable to escape another volley of gunfire on Thursday evening
in what police have described as a “very targeted attack”
homicide detectives examined a handgun and numerous bullet casings scattered across the quiet street
A car linked to the killing was found torched in nearby Fraser Rise about 10.45am

Detective Superintendent Janet Stevenson said police were still in the early stages of their investigation but confirmed they had already begun examining incidents from Sherwani’s criminal past
including the previous attempt on his life

Stevenson warned a retaliation attack was of significant concern
given Sherwani’s extensive links to organised crime
“We know is that this is a targeted attack
There is nothing for the local residents to fear
It is absolutely targeted,” Stevenson said
Harwe Sherwani lies injured in a doorway in Caroline Springs after trying to get help
An offender hurt in a collision following the attack might have sustained potentially life-threatening injuries
police said they believed the person was injured while fleeing the scene and suffered serious injuries
“Those injuries are believed to be as a result of a collision and we are keen to speak to anyone who may have treated the man or is aware of someone seeking treatment for these injuries,” police said in a statement
who didn’t want to be identified because of safety concerns
told this masthead they heard several gunshots on Thursday night
Another resident said they had arrived home shortly after the shooting and saw about 10 police cars in the street
Sherwani was born in northern Iraq and came to Australia as a refugee when he was nine years old
He soon became entangled in Melbourne’s underworld and developed a propensity for extreme violence
he was sentenced to serve a minimum of four years in jail over a gang-related assault on a former Comancheros member at a smash repairs business in Collingwood
Court documents detail how Sherwani and an associate repeatedly punched and kicked the victim in the body and head as he lay on the ground
breaking both the victim’s arms and leaving him with multiple facial injuries
A gun and bullet casings on the ground in Heysen Park Way
A County Court judge later described Sherwani
who already had a criminal history spanning several years
as having “an anger management problem” and called the attack an act of “calculated cold-blooded violence”
it was revealed that Sherwani was a patched member of the Comancheros between 2012 and 2015
and had been ordered by the gang to bash the man over an alleged debt
Sherwani was again arrested by police in 2023 after becoming involved in a wild high-speed pursuit and roadside fight near the Deer Park Bypass in Ravenhall
where his attacker threatened him with a hammer
Investigators at the time believed the fight was connected to a spate of arson attacks that destroyed several homes
offices and the popular Sonsa Market greengrocer in Collingwood
Sherwani’s former Caroline Springs home was the subject of three firebombings in June and July 2023
which was also linked to the tit-for-tat arson attacks

At the time of the arson attack at Sonsa Market
police were investigating links between grocery industry players and criminal networks involved in drug trafficking and money laundering
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam/CCTV footage

Described by Anthony Bourdain as “perfectly positioned to win the hearts and minds of the world”, sisig is a Filipino dish involving a rich medley of pork (usually the cheeks, snout and ears) fried with chilli, onions and vinegar. Served sizzling on a cast iron plate for a caramelised char, its deep, gamey flavours are balanced by a silky fried egg and calamansi juice (a citrus fruit native to the Philippines).
While this is how it’s served at most Filipino restaurants, Mrs Parks Kitchen ditches the egg and offers an authentic Kapampangan version with roasted pork and chicken liver, which adds a creaminess to the zesty, spicy dish.
There are also dishes like kare kare (beef stew in peanut sauce), plus sweet and spicy barbecued pork skewers, and desserts such as leche custard pie and cassava cake.

The Victorian Government has revealed its landmark ten-year greenfields plan
which is set to deliver the state’s longest pipeline of new land for new homes
The State Government has said that the plan will:
The plan includes 27 additional greenfield areas across Melbourne’s outer south-east
and west to be released over the next ten years – committing to providing the space and completing the planning work to deliver 180,000 new homes over the decade
The pipeline of available land gives developers the confidence to invest early and get shovels in the ground sooner to deliver more homes for big
It also provides concrete timelines for industry and community about when the 27 new planning processes will commence
The structure planning process will ensure these areas are well prepared for development
with the release of unzoned land sequenced to align with the provision of infrastructure and community needs so that new communities are liveable
The first three greenfield plans set to be released in 2024-25 include:
These build on the seven metropolitan Melbourne greenfield plans under preparation as part of the Victorian Planning Authority’s workplan
The government will also improve the planning system so builders can get on with building
the Victorian Planning Authority will be integrated with the Department of Transport and Planning
the four major components of Victoria’s planning system – strategic
statutory and spatial – will be working together to cut delays and duplication and deliver faster and better structure planning
The government will also offer a dedicated concierge service to work with councils and industry to identify
intervene and fix the issues that are preventing zoned land from being developed
Government will also review several existing greenfield PSPs that are not yet fully developed to understand opportunities for increasing the number and types of homes where there is sufficient planned infrastructure
Fixing the unfair split of suburban growth
greenfield areas have shouldered a disproportionate amount of Melbourne’s growth
Homes in well-serviced council areas like Boroondara have only grown 24 per cent since 1994 while Wyndham grew 439 per cent over the same time
The ten-year plan will turn the tide and help realise the government’s vision of 70 per cent of homes in Melbourne going in inner and established areas with 30 per cent going in outer-suburban ‘greenfield’ areas – instead of the other way around
This plan provides the space and the planning work for that 30 per cent
the government’s plans to build more homes in inner-suburban areas close to transport
services and jobs – particularly around more than 50 activity centres – will help deliver hundreds of thousands of additional homes in established areas
said that family homes and backyards are a beautiful thing for those who want it
which is why the State Government is delivering ten years’ worth of them in one big plan for the first time ever
“Whether it’s a new house with a backyard that’s fit for a big family
or a unit in the inner suburbs near a train station for a first home buyer – I’m about more homes and more opportunities for everyone,” Premier Allan said
Victorian Minister for Planning and Suburbs
said that this announcement is what builders like those represented by the Urban Development Institute of Australia have been asking for to plan and build with confidence
“This is all about providing choice and getting the balance right between development in the outer suburbs and development in the inner city
Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) CEO
said that in light of the State Government announcement on the release of the ten-year greenfields plan
MAV has renewed its calls for a joined-up vision for greater metro Melbourne
“Melbourne is the country’s fastest growing city,” Ms Grigsby said
“The scale and complexity of this growth management and planning task cannot be overstated
with local government a leader and critical partner in shaping the future of our city and creating neighbourhoods that are thriving and great places to live
“Further expansion of growth areas must include consideration for strong economic and employment clusters
transport in support of a connected and compact city – as the Activity Centre announcement acknowledged – and include the community infrastructure that can support growth areas to be great places to build more homes
“The MAV is aligned with the Planning Institute of Australia’s call that development contributions reform needs input beyond the development industry
from planning experts and local government
councils will be at the ready to partner with the State Government on reform to development contributions

Melton council wants to make parking at train stations in the municipality easier for commuters
a notice of motion that identified a need for better access to car parking at Cobblebank
The council will write to the state government and VicTrack to inform it of community concerns and request an urgent investigation into the matter as well with notifying VicTrack
said the inability to park their car at the stations was forcing people to look elsewhere for spots
A recent study by The Climate Council and West of Melbourne Economic Development Alliance highlighted that Melton doesn’t have access to all day transport
while a West of Melbourne Economic Development Alliance report found a significant amount of Melton residents have to travel for work
Rockbank and Caroline Springs train stations are at capacity very early every morning
leaving commuters to seek other parking opportunities away from the train stations,” he said
parking availability for other amenities in the respective surrounding areas is also reduced
“This impacts commuters and accessibility to other services including surrounding retail
and commercial buildings by members of the community.”
The motion outlined the possibility of exploring an increase of car parking supply at the stations
it also suggested the implementation of new bus routes as a potential solution to ease pressure on spaces and provide alternative options for commuters
These services would connect growth areas like Thornhill Park
and Eynesbury to the train stations in Cobblebank
Melton station was not included in the motion as the redevelopment works
as part of the level crossing removal project
will include increased car parking at the new building
Councillor Justine Farrugia seconded the motion and said it was a much-needed issue
Sabrina Taylor gets teary talking about Jan Schulz
the recently retired president of St Albans Caroline Springs Netball Association (SACSNA)
What was meant to be a 12-month maternity cover turned into 41 years of volunteer service for Schulz
whose presence at the head of the association will be dearly missed
She's a mother hen to a lot of us,” said Taylor
who comes into the president role this year
She just puts her head down… She just does the work and doesn't expect anything out of it
Schulz grew SACSNA into one of the largest netball associations in Melbourne with 171 teams now playing across four venues
It’s a far cry from where local netball was when Schulz first became involved with SACSNA as a player
when St Albans High School (now St Albans Secondary College) allowed the use of their facilities if SACSNA agreed to line the courts and raise money for lights
“It was one outside court with some lighting boxes that you had to put coins in to keep the lights on,” said Schulz
“Quite often you would run out of light in the middle of the game and someone would have to race over and put money in the coin slot!”
Schulz stepped up to the top position when the association's then-president fell pregnant
“She asked me whether I'd take it on for 12 to 18 months until she came back
SACSNA flourished under Schulz’s leadership
soon growing from seven to 20 ladies teams and moving to an indoor court at St Albans Technical School in 1983
A junior competition was established in 1989 – becoming the first to allow boys to play up to the age of 13 – before a senior mixed competition was added the following year
so the association co-funded new facilities at Copperfield College alongside the local council
The association fundraised $198,000 to make the netball courts full-sized
and the council contributed $250,000 to cover an additional court
SACSNA grew again in 2008 when teams began playing at Caroline Springs Leisure Centre
followed by Keilor Basketball Netball Stadium in 2016
The association still plays across these three venues today
in addition to a competition a Cobblebank Stadium in Melton since 2022
and its representative teams that compete at Parkville’s State Netball Centre and Riverside Tennis and Netball Centre
Schulz was responsible for everything from drawing up fixtures
She balanced this role for many years with full-time work and raising two children alongside her late husband
she was still working through the morning just to get fixtures done and making sure everyone's got all their information… I don't know how she did it,” said Taylor
“I think that over the years she's dedicated probably just as much
to netball and the community than what she has with her own family.”
Schulz’s legacy will endure through the association’s growth and progressive initiatives she spearheaded
such as encouraging male participation and championing inclusive uniform options
“We were the first to have the shorts and the tops in our rep teams,” Schulz said
because you were so strict on the uniform rule that you lost players because they weren't comfortable in what they had to wear
Recently departed Netball Victoria board member Michael Portaro
former Westside Saints head coach Darren Abela
and umpire Sean Steele are among the association’s former male players who have gone on to be heavily involved in the sport
Schulz also helped raise the standard of play at SACSNA
as indicated by the success of the Westside Saints
who are the current Association Championships 13&U Female and 15&U Female title holders
The pathway for athletes has never been stronger after Schulz contributed to securing the licence for new Victorian Netball League (VNL) team the Western Warriors
players can now progress from Woolworths NetSetGO right through to the VNL’s competitive pre-elite performance environment in the hopes of one day representing Victoria or Australia
that was my job done – [catering] from babies right up to VNL,” said Schulz
the SACSNA committee was sure to thank not only Schulz
who sacrificed numerous hours with their mum growing up as she kept their competitions running
“My daughter was two and a half when I took this on
we finally get our mum back!’” Schulz said
Schulz plans to step down from the committee entirely at the end of the year to move to the country where her daughter
She will depart SACSNA knowing the association and netball in Melbourne’s west are in a better place because of her incredible contributions
“She really has been a ground-breaker,” Taylor said
Train station car parks in Melbourne’s western suburbs have received a major upgrade
including in Caroline Springs where 400 spaces have opened
The newly opened spaces more than doubles the car park capacity for residents wanting to utilise public transport
“More than doubling the parking capacity at Caroline Springs Station is an excellent result for our community
easing parking issues and improving transport connections in the west,” Kororoit MP Luba Grigorovitch said
improved lighting and CCTV will also be delivered as part of the project
with additional landscaping also being provided
The works are part of the state government’s Car Park for Commuters program
delivering new and upgraded car parks across the state
“Not only have we delivered more than 1,200 new and upgraded spaces across three stations in the west
but we’ve also made it easier and safer to catch the train,” Public Transport minister Ben Carroll said
380 new and upgraded spaces will be fully ready to use in January
