NoosaCare is planning an exciting expansion of its residential aged care facilities with the development of 65 new residences customised to individual needs with a strong focus on baby boomers who are looking for something different
and is seeking two people with expertise to join its Board of Directors and contribute to its governance
NoosaCare is a well-respected community based not-for-profit organisation that runs two residential aged care facilities – Carramar in Tewantin with 175 residents and Kabara in Cooroy with 96 residents
Over more than 35 years it has become deeply embedded in the Noosa community and with a staff of 400 NoosaCare is a significant contributor to the local economy
NoosaCare takes pride in its origins and the fact it is the only community based
not-for-profit organisation providing residential aged care that is of the community and for the community
Its mission is to ensure their residents achieve the best level of health and wellbeing possible by delivering personalised services with care and compassion and its vision is to aspire to be a community where residents can live with dignity and choice
The organisation is run by a Board of up to seven individuals and managed by an experienced CEO and Executive Management Team
CEO Grant Simpson said over the past several years the Board had purchased five four-bedroom houses behind Carramar and now in final discussions with further purchases
would have sufficient space to start designing their new proposed community
He said they proposed construction of 2-3 bedroom apartments but it would not be a country club style situation
The government’s aim to keep people living longer in their own homes has been very successful with people delaying moving into retirement living until late 70s and 80s
Mr Simpson said the development would target two groups identified in the community as needing residential aged care facilities – a population of older
and people who have a loved one living with dementia
People coming here will benefit from the services including laundry
and to meet the demands of baby boomers the new facility would be a high end design with modern technological devices for communication with family members around the world
It would be tailored for people accustomed to a lifestyle that includes entertainment
Mr Simpson said he expected the new project was about three years on the horizon
with the initial 12-18 months involving drawing up and developing plans in consideration of the Noosa Plan and consulting the local community
NoosaCare is a membership-based organisation in which the Board is accountable to its members and to key stakeholders for the achievement of its Mission and Vision and for the good governance of the organisation
The Board of NoosaCare is ultimately held legally accountable for the performance of the organisation
Currently Board members act in a voluntary capacity with no remuneration
but under its new constitution and legal framework the Board does envisage that some form of remuneration may be applicable into the future
Board meetings are usually held at Carramar but every three months at Kabara on the last Monday of the month at 3.30pm
Board members may also act as ambassadors for NoosaCare and may be involved in speaking to stakeholder groups
NoosaCare seeks to appoint two Board members to the organisation for a minimum three year period with a hopeful starting time in February
The skill sets they are looking for in addition to a sound understanding of governance are expertise in marketing and running a business
Knowledge of the Aged Care industry is appreciated but not mandated
Interested persons are invited to contact the current Chair of NoosaCare, Johanne Wright on her mobile 0415873552 or email ianandjo@wewstnet.com.au

The daycare centre was shut down and is now under investigation
A police spokeswoman said on Wednesday the young boy had died and police were preparing a report for the coroner

The toddler reportedly stacked up toys to climb the fence and reach the pool in the backyard of the property
The carer of the facility found the boy in the pool and ran to a neighbouring house to ask for help
a FIFO worker who has a child of similar age
had just refreshed his first aid qualifications and gave the toddler 15 minutes of CPR
who has run the family day care from her home for just over 12 months
is fully qualified and has a valid first aid certificate
no charges will be laid as there was no evidence of any criminality but the Department of Local Government and Communities is conducting its own investigation
Community Services minister Tony Simpson said there were questions regarding the supervision of the children at the facility
"We can see there wasn't any supervision
and the (ratio of the) number of children to supervisors," he said
a family day care centre operates under a group licensing
so a community group or an organisation will set up as a family day care centre and then they will license individual family homes to be day care operators
they have to comply with the same raft of measurements that are in place for normal childcare centres in terms of safety
Nine News Perth said national laws did not prohibit family day care operators from having swimming pools
but they must have a safety policy and the pool must be safe
the Carramar centre's pool was inspected in March and was found to comply with requirements
Education Minister Peter Collier said the government would consider reviewing pool regulations for family day cares
"Anything we can do to make any public venue safe for children
especially when there is water involved," he said
Distraught parents whose children attend the Carramar centre said they fully support the carer

A drunken hoon sped around Carramar in his car on Sunday, endangering families in front yards before crashing into a garden bed and another car, police claim.
WA Police spokeswoman Barbara Crane said local officers on patrol in Lyndavale Loop about 5.25pm were alerted when they saw a plume of smoke as the car burned rubber.
"Police positioned their vehicle at the edge of a smoke cloud and activated the emergency lights," she said.
She said the man allegedly drove his black Holden Commodore utility around the police car up on to the street verge and accelerated away along Innesvale Way in an effort to avoid arrest.
She said the driver sped through several streets, full of families and children in front yards and on footpaths, before losing control on Keanefield Street and hitting a garden bed and a car parked in a driveway.
Police arrested and charged the 25-year-old Carramar man with reckless driving, failing to stop and driving under the influence and impounded the ute for 28 days.
The man has been released on bail and is due to appear at Joondalup Magistrates Court on July 13.

Mark Stillman, 64, and his wife Lesley, 67, were found at a home on Golf Links Drive at Carramar in northern Perth at 10.40am on Sunday
Officers had been called to carry out a welfare check on the couple when they made the grim discovery
One body was found by investigators in the garage
Detectives and forensic officers visited the home on Monday to begin their investigations
A spokeswoman from Western Australian Police told Daily Mail Australia there is no ongoing threat
'Investigators can assure the community there are no concerns for the general public's safety,' the spokeswoman said
Mr and Ms Stillman were married and separated several years ago, but were still sharing the same house, The West Australian reported.
The couple originated from the UK before they moved to Australia.
One resident who lives on the normally quiet street said his wife spoke to Ms Stillman on the weekend and there was no indication of any trouble.
'We spoke to Lesley on Saturday morning, she was bouncy, she was going off to pilates with her friends and that's the last we saw them,' he said.
Ms Stillman had gone on a holiday to Cambodia and Thailand last month.
She had been a volunteer at Guide Dogs WA according to her LinkedIn page and completed a Master of Business Administration at the London Metropolitan University in 2001.

Emergency services were called to the car park at Horsley Drive at Carramar, in Sydney's south-west, at 8:30am after reports two women were injured.
Fairfield Local Area Command Inspector Stephen Thomas said the 41-year-old man hit the 34-year-old woman with a tyre lever before striking her with a car.
A 48-year-old woman came to her assistance and the man allegedly stabbed both women before hitting them with the car and fleeing.
Both women were taken to Liverpool Hospital and are in serious but stable conditions.
The 34-year-old woman has stab wounds and head injuries and the 48-year-old woman has a laceration to her head.
It is believed that the man was known to the 34-year-old woman.
He has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and attempted murder.
He is expected to appear at Fairfield Local Court tomorrow.
Both women either worked or attended the community centre.
Inspector Thomas said the 48-year-old woman showed bravery in coming to the other woman's assistance.
"It's very commendable on her behalf to place herself in that situation and try to assist the other woman who at the time was being put in a very unstable situation," he said.
He said both women were put in considerable danger.
"It's a very violent situation that's occurred to both victims," he said.
Police arrested the man in Cabramatta at 10:30am after he was stopped by officers for behaving suspiciously.
Police urge anyone with information about the incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
For more than 25 years a stunning treetops by the coast community setting has been quietly evolving on the site of a former sand and limestone quarry in Carramar
the development incorporating natural bushland and over 27-hectares of community park which features a cascading waterfall
walking trails and an abundance of wildflowers will open to the public for the first time
Community Open days on 14 and 15 September will present a rare opportunity to experience the 98-hectare site which is set to become one of Perth’s most unique and inspiring residential communities
Known as The Kilns – a nod to the expertly restored limestone kilns which have been retained on the property and will be vested to the City of Wanneroo – it is an incredible legacy for the region created by Marford Group
said when people eventually buy into the estate they will become members of a Home Owners Association which will own and manage the community park as well as a range of other shared facilities
“Our vision has always been a ‘people helping people’ community model where people from all ages live together and nurture a strong and vibrant neighbourhood spirit,” he said
“They’ll have real ownership of the natural community assets and a role in managing and progressing their surroundings and ultimately their own wealth creation through capital growth.”
“We envisage releasing a variety of lot sizes to encourage a diverse mix of residents including singles
and empty-nesters who can bring a range of skills and ideas and contribution toward the Home Owners Association.”
Mr Delroy said there will be some 2,000m squared Special Residential lots for those people wanting larger blocks and he believes these will attract people from country areas who want to retire to the city but don’t want to lose their connection to the land
“Imagine the practical skills and experience retired farmers and avid gardeners would bring to the management of the community park and gardens,” he said
Realising the ambitious vision for The Kilns has taken 25 years and started with filling the four million m3 void at the site created by sand and limestone mining with clean
This was followed by extensive landscaping and the construction a fully-equipped Men’s Shed
pizza oven and outdoor entertainment areas
a community centre and the meticulous restoration of the historically significant limestone kilns
According to Trevor there’s still more work to be done including the planting of a series of community gardens which will provide residents with fresh vegetables
and the construction of basketball and tennis courts
storage sheds and even a wedding ceremony venue
“But we are excited to share what we have created so far and gather further ideas from the people that will eventually reside here
We look forward to opening the gates to the public so people can get a taste of what will eventually be a very special place to live.”
The Kilns is located off Flynn Drive in Carramar and will be open to the public from 10.30am to 4pm on Saturday 14 September and Sunday 15 September 2019
There’ll be free kid’s games and activities

REIWA Research has run the data to find the top performing suburbs north of the river.
or brag about your suburb at the next family dinner
you'll find a snapshot of the action below
For a review of the top performing suburbs south of the river, read last week's article
The north-eastern corridor shone when it came to house price growth
with the top four suburbs on the list all recording increases over 14 per cent
Bullsbrook took the lead with a 23 per cent increase in home values to $492,000

but several State Government incentives are available to help them get into a home sooner
Perth’s rental vacancy rate rose to 2.5 per cent in March 2025
This was 0.2 percentage points higher than the 2.3 per cent recorded in February
As the Federal Election approaches on 3 May

A MENTAL health charity has said it “couldn’t have struck luckier” after officially opening its new service at Thatcham’s Priory
Response has refurbished the building in Church Lane to provide a home for 10 people who have been unable to leave hospital because of a lack of step-down facilities in West Berkshire
The Grade II-listed building has been transformed from an empty shell into bedsits with individual kitchens and a communal area for residents to build relationships
provides the residents with a chance to integrate into the community and possibly move on to live independently
Carramar is an Aboriginal word meaning shade of trees
The charity received a royal seal of approval when the Duchess of Gloucester officially opened the new mental health service on Wednesday
The duchess spoke to residents of her support for the scheme
funded through a partnership with Berkshire Health Foundation Trust and Thatcham Town Council
said: “Carramar will be an excellent resource for West Berkshire
“Services such as these mean that individuals need not spend prolonged periods in hospital and means they can continue their recovery in a very supportive environment
“Response absolutely believes that individuals with mental health issues need safe and secure accommodation in order to enhance their recovery journey.”
Mr McLaughlin added: “One of the residents was almost in tears with disbelief
“He didn’t believe the facilities were actually his
He asked me a few times ‘are you sure I can live here?’.”
Mr McLaughlin said that Thatcham was a perfect location in “a lovely market town with lots of amenities… we couldn’t have struck luckier”
He added that Carramar would help reintegrate people into the community and practice life skills they might not have had the opportunity to learn or may have forgotten
Response is renting the building from Thatcham Town Council on a 30-year lease
generating more than £34,000-a-year for the local authority
The future of the Priory was uncertain until Response contacted the town council after reading reports in the Newbury Weekly News
The town council purchased the former pupil referral unit from West Berkshire Council in 2009
wanted to use the building as a community facility and office space for the town council
while renting out the current offices in Brownsfield Road
But work on the building did not begin until 2015
when the Lib Dems lost control of the council to the Conservatives
who wanted to sell the building off to reduce the “colossal debt to residents”
The party’s plans were scuppered though when the sale to a private buyer fell through at the 11th hour
Thatcham North) said: “The original purpose of the building was a home and it’s gone back to that because it’s providing a home to vulnerable people in a specialised environment for them
“I couldn’t be more pleased with how it’s turned out
the use of the building and the partnership we have with Response going forward
“I just think it’s a huge result for Thatcham.”
