2025When it comes to Italian on the Gold Coast
there’s one name that is synonymous with authenticity – Gemelli
the Gemelli family certainly has a proven formula for success in the hospitality game
the group – headed by twins Alec and James
alongside older brother Paul – have opened a brand-new casual Italian concept on Pappas Way
and here’s everything you need to know …
Papa Rolly’s is a bricks-and-mortar nod to the food truck that rolled through the streets of the Gold Coast back in 2016
Named after the Gemelli brother’s late grandfather
their latest venture seeks to build upon the legacy of convivial dining with a brand-new Italian concept that is family friendly and fun
Spurred by the success of Roy’s by Gemelli in Sorrento
the team jumped at the opportunity to stray further from the usual dining hotspots
this time bringing the authentic Italian Gemelli is known for to Carrara
embraces the concept of approachable dining
where comfort food meets artisanal craftsmanship – think of it as a modern take on the classic red-and-white-checkered tablecloth vibe
The space radiates warmth and a welcoming atmosphere
making it the ideal spot for families to grab a bite
groups and anyone craving authentic Italian fare without the formalities of fine dining
with classic Italian cocktails including limoncello spritz sitting pretty next to negronis
the house wine – in Rosso red or Bianco white – is available by the glass
Perhaps the most unexpected and delightful twist is that Papa Rolly’s is also BYO wine
Papa Rolly’s echos a familiar palette of raw exposed brick and concrete elements found in other Gemelli locations
Though there is seating for 85 scattered inside and out
Although it’s early days, the Carrara community has been quick to embrace the neighbourhood newcomer with bookings in hot demand. If you’re keen to nab a table, head to The Directory for the details.

It’s a known fact that every stadium improves by 100% when it has an athletics track in it
currently undergoing a massive transformation to become the centrepiece venue for the track and field at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games
as well as the 2018 Australian Athletics Championships & Nomination Trials as evidence of that
Carrara Stadium (known commercially as Metricon Stadium) is primarily used as the Gold Coast Suns' AFL home ground during the year
but since September the ground has seen the turf removed and work begin on the IAAF certified track
as well as the stands to increase the spectator capacity to 35,000
The temporary northern stand that has been constructed can hold 9,500
With the track line marking almost complete
the stadium is expected to be finished on schedule in time for its first big test
where Australia’s best track and field talent will fight for glory and a place on the Australian team at the 2018 Australian Athletics Championships & Nomination Trials from 15-18 February 2018
The time lapse below shows the extent of the transformation between mid-October to the end of November
the track will be cut up and sent around Queensland to be used by schools for long-jump run-ups
“Children will be able to run, jump and follow in the steps of their elite sporting heroes, including our own Sally Pearson,†Commonwealth Games Minister Kate Jones told the Gold Coast Bulletin
“This is an exciting time in the Games' journey with this key venue evolving from an AFL field to a spectacular stadium where the eyes of the world will be focused for the Opening Ceremony on 4 April 2018.â€
See below shots of the stadium before the construction and during the transformation
the stadium will also host the Games’ opening and closing ceremonies
Just recently GOLDOC declared Opening Ceremony tickets have sold out
GC2018 athletics tickets are still available, with seats to sessions that include the men’s 100m, 400m and long jump finals, as well as the women’s 400m, 1500m and javelin throw finals among many other events. Click here for tickets.

A 46-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with murder after a 10-year-old girl was found dead at her home in a tight-knit Gold Coast community on Tuesday night.
Emergency services were called to a residential unit complex on Central Place at Carrara, just inland from Surfers Paradise, about 6pm.
The girl, Sophie Wang, was located unresponsive in a unit, reportedly by one of her parents, and declared dead at the scene.
Gold Coast schoolgirl Sophie Wang, 10, was found dead in her home at Carrara. A 46-year-old woman has been charged with her murder.
Following investigations, Gold Coast detectives located and arrested a 46-year-old Carrara woman at a nearby street about 10.25pm.
She was charged with murder and was due to appear before Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning.
Police said the woman knew Wang but wouldn’t confirm the relationship between the pair.
Inspector Lou Serafim earlier said a male relative called triple zero about 6pm on Tuesday after finding the girl.
There were unconfirmed reports Wang, a student at nearby Emmanuel College, had suffered stab wounds to her neck.
In a statement, the college said the school community was “devastated by the tragic passing of one of our students at a home within Emerald Lakes last night”.
“Our prayers are with the family, friends, first responders and all affected by the loss of this beloved child in her home,” the college said.

After moving around with my (separated) family – London
Florence – I relanded in Genoa as a teenager and stayed until my late twenties
It is a provincial but important port town with a history of accommodating newcomers
That warmth and robustness mixed with a distinct roughness about the edges is what I find intriguing
I find a place interesting when you see potential
get irritated by things that can be better
and admire those that are already beautiful
you feel your work is done when every space is at its best but in Genoa there will always be something to work on
one of the largest historic centres in Europe
is where you get lost in little lanes sometimes so narrow you can stretch your arms and touch both sides
Explore it on foot and be surprised by its constantly changing nature
from generations of Genoese to a variety of ethnic communities
Hidden within the old town are amazing domesticscale squares surrounded by beautiful palazzi
with glimpses of exquisite frescoes visible through the imposing windows
Much still needs to be restored and upgraded
are difficult to use due to the lack of daylight
but more and more people are moving into the bustling centro storico where slate articulated roofscapes offer jaw-dropping sea views
When you exit the historic centre you find yourself in a regimented 19th century new town with wider streets that are lined with ornate buildings
This is where everyone gets confused on styles
the 1930s produced the grand neoclassical fascist buildings lining the sides of the covered section of the Bisagno river
came up with the idea of covering the river)
Constructed in harsh stone these neoclassical buildings have grand Imperial proportions to assert the power and toughness of the regime
They would be very hard to bring back to a comfortable human scale
But there are also beautiful 1930s rationalist buildings
with human proportions and naval references
including round volumes and large terraces
My favourite is the former Mercato del Pesce
Although badly reshaped by the construction of the elevated road
it is still charming and I am proud that I managed to get it listed back in the 90s
Of course everyone knows that Cristoforo Colombo was Genoese
although the Spanish are still disputing this
the elevated road construction cut off the old city from the seafront – the working port
But the elevated road provides spectacular views for those entering the city from the motorway
are hidden and take years to discover; churches
It was years after I moved to Genoa that I discovered blue jeans were invented here
The town centre features the colonnade garden of his home
I’ve noticed that Genoese people are very reticent to move away – even when work prospects are not brilliant
as they are not ready to renounce the quality of life here
and the swim season starts in late April and ends in early October
while vitamin D harvesting is really all year round
it is a very popular place for an evening stroll for people of all ages
At the end of the promenade is Corso Italia
providing some very sought after real estate
Most local people though are mountaineers rather than sailors
Rambling from one fort to the next on the hills crowning the town is a popular pastime
I wasn’t truly a newcomer as my family is Ligurian
the rest of my family stayed at our extended family home in Quarto dei Mille from where Garibaldi left by sea with 1000 soldiers to unify Italy in 1860
I left in my twenties because I had broader horizons
but as time passes I enjoy returning over and over again to discover its secrets

The devastated father of a 10-year-old girl who was allegedly murdered by her mum was given the harrowing task of helping detectives piece together what happened during a walkthrough of the crime scene
Hours after coming home at 6pm to find his daughter dead
Griffith University Associate Professor Yun Wang put on a blue forensic suit and helped detectives piece together the alleged murder of Sophie Wang
Seasoned detectives described the crime scene as one of the 'most confronting' they have ever seen.
Police will allege the Year 5 student's mother Yingying Xu slashed her daughter's throat at their Emerald Lakes home, in Carrara, on the Gold Coast
earlier on Tuesday before fleeing the scene
was arrested in a nearby street more than four hours later - at 10.25pm - and has since been charged with murder
Sophie's death has rocked the tight-knit local community
and which is located just 600 metres from her home
laid flowers outside her home with his mother and other school friends
'She was one of the smartest kids in our school,' Oliver told Daily Mail Australia
she really cared about people a lot and she was very kind.'
The tragedy has also rattled staff at Griffith University
where Prof Wang works in the chemistry and forensic science department
Two male colleagues of Prof Wang's visited the crime scene on Wednesday morning and spoke to officers
The university is offering support to Prof Wang and his close colleagues
'We are deeply saddened to hear about the tragic death of the daughter of a valued member of the Griffith community,' the university said in a statement
'Our thoughts are with the family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.'
Prof Wang, who specialises in renewable energy, has worked at the university in various roles since 2010 after relocating to the Gold Coast from Sydney
Detective Acting Inspector Kent Ellis said Queensland Police are keeping the family and the community in their thoughts during this 'tragic' and 'distressing' time
it is one of the most confronting scenes I have ever seen,' Detective Acting Inspector Ellis told reporters on Wednesday
'Despite her father and the emergency service's best efforts
the 10-year-old was pronounced deceased by attending paramedics
'An investigation was immediately commenced and as a result the child's mother was charged with her murder.'
Mr Ellis would not comment on whether Xu had a history of mental health issues
The 46-year-old woman was due to face Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning
She did not appear in person and a police application to have names and details of the case suppressed was later withdrawn after it was opposed by lawyers and media
Xu was remanded in custody and will next appear on November 29
Emmanuel College Principal Dan Brown earlier penned a school community letter on Wednesday morning to share his condolences

The Carrara area, along with Pietrasanta, Seravezza and surroundings are filled with quarries vibrating with life and are seen as a “test-bed” for experimenting with new styles and languages, a sort of cultural district, a showcase for young artists, a blend of tradition, genius, creative spirit and innovation.
“One can do anything with marble”, says Fiammetta Vannelli, an entrepreneur, designer and artist, a child of this land, deeply in love with marble from an early age, when her father used to take her to the quarries with him. Her love of marble is the reason behind the establishment of Statuaria Arte, the first workshop she opened with her brother and cousin, a special place where she welcomes artists, offering them the chance to create works of art and showcase them.
Cave di marmi di Carrara Over the years and having had major working experiences abroad, Fiammetta Vannelli developed an expertise in the art market which allowed her to express herself in the most varied fields and collaborate with artists and young sculptors such as Matthew Spender, Mario Tapia, Massimiliano Giornetti, Marco Borgianni, with her creations enjoying fast-growing success.

Miriana Pino’s art is characterized by the tension between free and at the same time controlled forms that, once engraved on the matrix, find an autonomous dimension on paper. The images, made of sharp, intentional marks, take on a life of their own, transforming themselves into “strange attractors,” as Silvia Papucci observes, that stand in constant dialogue with memory and the present.
With Raw Data, Miriana Pino invites to a profound experience where the graphic sign is transformed into a universal and meditative language, capable of revealing new possibilities of reading and interpretation, opening the door to a universe rich in visual and logical implications.
The exhibition remains open Thursday through Saturday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. For information or to visit the exhibition at other times call 338 4417145.

completed the 1750-metre-deep drill hole in the Carrara Sub-basin last December
said this analysis showed the Carrara Sub-basin contained rocks with promising hydrocarbon potential
Hydrocarbons are the principal components of petroleum and natural gas
“These results highlight the Carrara Sub-basin as a potential new energy province in the Northern Territory and Queensland,” Dr Heap said
“It’s too early to tell how far these rocks extend
but the results are encouraging and give industry another reason to be looking seriously at this unexplored frontier.”
The Carrara Sub-basin was one of the most significant discoveries made during the first phase of the Australian Government’s $225 million Exploring for the Future program
uncovered as a result of a seismic survey of the South Nicholson Basin in 2017
Early data from the Carrara 1 drill hole, announced by Minister for Resources and Water Keith Pitt in April
indicated that the Carrara Sub-basin showed similarities to the Beetaloo Sub-basin
one of the most promising shale gas resources globally
Dr Heap said further analysis being undertaken by Geoscience Australia is testing the link to the Beetaloo Sub-basin and other geological regions
“Geoscience Australia is undertaking radiometric age dating of samples taken from Carrara 1
which will establish whether the Carrara Sub-basin has geological links to the Beetaloo Sub-basin or to the older petroleum plays of the McArthur Basin
These results will provide us with a better understanding of the energy resource potential of this sub-basin,” Dr Heap said
The National Drilling Initiative is one of three research programs run by MinEx CRC – which is a 10-year
$220 million collaboration between government
It aims to overcome the technical challenges of exploring for mineral deposits in prospective rocks concealed under the cover of younger rocks and sediment through new exploration tools and techniques

is a place where the Etruscan and medieval past is intertwined with modern life
the “Florence of Lunigiana,” amazes with its elegant squares and Renaissance buildings that conceal traces of the past that linked the town to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany
where life flows slowly and local traditions
Here the mountains are not just a place to explore-it is a way of life
Life in the Apennines is marked by the rhythms of nature
and ancient farming traditions still survive to this day
Mountains are a constant and inescapable presence for those who live on the Apuan coast and in Lunigiana
such as the marble of the Apuan Alps or the chestnuts of the Apennines
have been the sustenance and wealth of this land for centuries; they have created a direct link between the mountains and the people who live here
Life in the mountains has never been easy: the harsh climate
steep terrain and communication difficulties have required an extraordinary ability to adapt
This same strength is reflected in the tenacity and proud character of the local communities
The mountainous lands of Lunigiana and the Apuan Alps have also preserved their cultural and gastronomic traditions
insulating them from the sudden changes brought by modernity
Ancient customs manage to survive here thanks to the link with this mountainous landscape that protects them and keeps them alive
was already revered by the ancient Ligurians as a mystical place
mountains are seen not only as a physical place
but as a space in which man can approach the transcendent
finding peace and connection with something greater than himself
The history of Italy can be said to have passed between the Apuan Alps and Lunigiana: the position of the Apuan and Lunigiana mountains made this territory a borderland
but also a strategic communication route for many centuries
the territory was the boundary between Regio VII Etruria and Regio IX Liguria
a separation not only geographical but also cultural
The Apuo-Lunense mountains then formed a natural line of defense: throughout history
they were exploited as a natural defense against invasions and attacks
serving as a bulwark to protect the local populations
the routes through Lunigiana were traversed by travelers
and soldiers who used these paths to cross from northern Italy to Rome and vice versa
were crucial for crossing the barrier of the Apennines
From here then passed the salt routes used to transport the precious mineral from the Ligurian Sea northward to the Po Valley and the cities of Emilia and beyond
The border position then made large parts of the territory of today’s province of Massa-Carrara a contested land between different political entities
The crossroads position of these areas enriched the territory
but always nevertheless attached to their lands
dotted with castles and fortifications (from Piagnaro Castle in Pontremoli to Malaspina Castle in Massa
from Brunella Fortress in Aulla to Castruccio’s Tower in Avenza di Carrara
not to mention the many castles in Lunigiana: Fosdinovo
built to control the passes and defend the territory
testifies to the strategic role of the entire area in the past
Massa-Carrara’s strategic position made this land a protagonist of encounters and clashes
transforming it into a place of cultural and historical richness
the mountain passes and villages of the province tell this story of passages
speaking to visitors who want to discover an area where the mountains are not just a barrier
but a bridge between the past and the future
The mountains of Massa-Carrara are then deeply linked to the art and culture of this province
so much so that they themselves become muses and material for immortal masterpieces
traditions and mountain landscapes become protagonists
which celebrates the importance of Apuan marble in art and culture (here it is possible to discover how marble has been extracted from the mountains and transformed into works of art since theRoman times
work tools and models that testify to the inseparable link between the mountains and Carrara’s artistic tradition) to the quarries themselves
where you can visit the places where the mountains are “carved out” and understand how their material has become sculptures
buildings and monuments all over the world
the places scattered throughout the territory that offer living evidence of this link: the Carrara Cathedral
is one of the finest examples of the link between mountain marble and sacred art
The façade is built entirely of Apuan marble
while inside one can admire marble works with which one can admire the beauty and purity of the material
which was the residence of the Cybo-Malaspina family
Apuan marble was used to decorate interiors and exteriors
showing how the material of the mountains influenced the art and architecture of the Renaissance and Baroque periods
Going up to Pontremoli, we visit the Museum of the Stele Statues, which preserves the stele statues
mysterious prehistoric stone sculptures carved by the first inhabitants of the mountains: these anthropomorphic figures testify to a spiritual and artistic connection with the mountain landscape that goes back millennia
as in all the villages and castles of Lunigiana
This link between mountains and art is still alive: in the center of Carrara
the Padula Park hosts contemporary artworks that dialogue with the landscape
marble sculptures displayed in a natural setting to remind us of the inseparable relationship between art and nature that these lands have always experienced as part of themselves
In every corner of the province of Massa-Carrara
from monumental quarries to medieval villages
art and mountains are intertwined in an eternal dialogue
offering anyone who comes here the opportunity to discover how nature can become art and how art can give voice to nature
The mountains here are not just an element of the landscape
but a symbol of resilience and identity for the communities that live at their foot
these mountains have been a physical and cultural barrier
but also a source of inspiration and protection
the mountains of Massa-Carrara were the scene of dramatic events: the Gothic Line ran through these lands
and what happened on these mountains left deep scars behind
but not only that: in this land the history of the Resistance was made
And even today the paths of the mountains tell stories of freedom
keeping the memory of those difficult days alive
And it should not be forgotten that the mountains of Massa-Carrara have always inspired artists
Their imposing forms and changing landscapes have been celebrated in works of art and literature
and they continue to be a source of inspiration for anyone who visits them
the Apuan Alps have inspired poets such as Gabriele D’Annunzio
“Marmoreal crown of threatening points
from their pride assumed”: this is one of the many verses about the Apuan Alps that can be found inAlcyone
But mountains do not only inspire artists: for those who live in these lands
they represent a deep connection with their history
a connection with nature and a call to simplicity and authenticity
the symbol of a thousand-year history and a culture rooted in nature
Industry sources say a $20m contract has been signed for 10 Maryland Ave
A home in Carrara has potentially trumped some of the biggest sales along the Gold Coast beachfront
with the property going under contract for a rumoured $20m
Designed by the internationally renowned Gold Coast architect Jared Poole
10 Maryland Ave was on the market for only 11 days before three significant offers were received by agent Adam Cain
who co-marketed the property with colleague Faith Liu of Amir Prestige Group
The house was designed by the internationally renowned Jared Poole
Neither would comment on the sale other than to say that it was a record for the suburb
which would no doubt stand for some time to come
the price paid would have exceeded any previous sale in Carrara by $7m
The record currently stands with 640 Nerang Broadbeach Rd
which was sold by Dennis and Angela Perry for $13m earlier this year
It would also make it equal fourth in a list of the top sales in Queensland for 2022
matching the sale of the penthouse in the yet-to-be-built Glasshouse development on the Burleigh Heads beachfront

“It is a great story for the Gold Coast because it shows that there is still confidence in the market
Agents say quality craftsmanship is what sets the house apart
“When we see the market in Sydney and Melbourne going down
and we are still getting record-breaking sales it shows that the Gold Coast is the place to be
And demand from the interstate market remains strong.”
the house at 10 Maryland Ave is owned by Ian and Janette Callow
They demolished an existing property on the block to make way for the tri-storey home built to the highest of standards
the estate is elegant and sophisticated with a sweeping magnolia tree-lined avenue leading to its porte-cochere and motor court
Other standout features include triple-height
steam room and 25m heated lap pool flanked by an entertaining pavilion
1,340 bottle wine cellar and a pillar-less basement garage that accommodates 12 cars
The house is surrounded by gardens designed by a landscape architect
said what placed the home on a par with some of the Coast’s most expensive beachfront properties was its quality
Because when you sit in it you can see it is all hand made and has only the best components throughout

Carrara and in particular Maryland Ave is fast making a name for itself among cashed-up buyers on the Gold Coast
The suburb has turned out several $10m-plus sales over the past two years
including the home of V8 Supercar champion Paul Weel and his wife Emma
who sold their property in Maryland Ave for $10.9m last year and the $12m sale of a block at 8-12 Riverbend Ave

The Brisbane Lions boast a rich and unique history – born from over 100 years of Fitzroy and a decade of the Bears – that lives on through the Club today
The names of past greats from all arms of the Club are now enshrined in the Brisbane Lions Hall of Fame
while many of the stories from yesteryear are often recounted and have become part of our football folklore
One of the most significant moments in our Club’s Queensland history came in 1991 when discussions started surrounding the potential move of the then Bears to Brisbane
came to life at Carrara on the Gold Coast in 1987 after a consortium headed by former actor Paul Cronin – who sadly passed in September – and financed by Christopher Skase were awarded the license for Queensland’s first VFL team
control of the Club was transferred to the Pelerman Group (headed by Gold Coast businessman Reuben Pelerman)
who soon also became to realise the harsh business implications of owning the Bears
It was at this time that discussions commenced between keen supporters of AFL in Queensland – future Bears/Lions Directors Alan Piper and Peter Williams – and the Brisbane (Gabba) Cricket Ground Trust
Piper and Williams had identified that for AFL in Queensland to succeed
the Bears needed to relocate from the Gold Coast into the heart of Brisbane
The two sports catered for at the Gabba back then were cricket and greyhound racing – with the cricket ground (then far too small for AFL) surrounded by a greyhound racing track
McKnoulty needed little convincing of the proposed redevelopment
and went into bat with the then Goss Labour Government to obtain approval – not just to permit the AFL tenancy rights
but to commit to rebuilding the Gabba to accommodate the Bears with a staged development
McKnoulty and Williams met in Melbourne with the then AFL Commissioner Ross Oakley and then AFL CFO Greg Durham
McKnoulty committed the Brisbane Cricket Ground Trust and confirmed he had an agreement with the Premier to the program above
The AFL in turn agreed to the Bears proceeding with negotiations with the current owners to relocate the Bears to the Gabba
The only condition was that after 12 months
the Bears were to cease private ownership and become a members-run club
The first stage of the development was to remove the cricket practice wickets on the south-west corner
which enabled the Bears to trial two home games at the ground in 1992 (with the dog-track still in place)
The next stage involved the removal of the dog-track (sizing the ground to the same dimensions as the MCG)
rebuilding the Northern Stand (incorporating Gabba Towers)
and permitting the Bears to take over the ‘Silks’ Greyhound Club
the Bears moved permanently to the Gabba and hosted all home games in 1993 at the venue
Not only were the Bears now playing in their home city
but the move to the Gabba also resulted in a significant spike in attendances and membership
there would be further upgrades to the facilities and stands
converting the tired old ground to a state-of-the-art sporting venue
McKnoulty’s unwavering support of the initiative throughout the months of discussion and negotiation cannot be understated
and many maintain that the move would never have happened without his commitment and endeavor
Sadly John McKnoulty passed away in May this year
at which time he was recognised with distinction for his enormous contributions to Queensland Cricket
and as long-standing member of the Queensland Cricketers’ Club
And although he wasn’t an avid supporter of VFL/AFL
his impact on the Brisbane Lions’ journey won’t be forgotten
