Ms McCabe said the result reflected the fact that Newcastle had long-term values that aligned strongly with the Greens' values "We always felt that Newcastle was a Labor-Greens town and this is the first time we've been able to really see that come through in election results," she said Despite promising signs during the election campaign One Nation's candidate for the Seat of Hunter Mr Bonds said he doubted he would put his hand up to run again compared to Nationals candidate Sue Gilroy on 18.4 per cent and Labor incumbent Dan Repacholi on 44.2 per cent Mr Bonds said the electoral boundary redistribution had worked against conservative candidates "The demographics of the seat have changed in the boundary adjustment Without a strong conservative leader who lays out a proper plan for the future that is alternative to Labor I don't know that I would bother to run again," Mr Bonds said "We need a conservative (candidate) because if it swings conservative If that base is not there then we will suffer the same fate as the Liberal/Nationals" Liberal candidate for Paterson Laurence Antcliff said he was shocked by the national swing to Labor Mr Antcliff was regarded as a serious threat to Labor's Meryl Swanson Picture by Peter Lorimer. But with 82.4 per cent of the vote counted on Monday Ms Swanson had secured 37.3 per cent of the primary vote at all," Mr Antcliff said on Saturday night "There's no crystal ball that will tell the future of Mr Antcliff's political career but he said he is open to future opportunities in politics "I'm proud to be an Australian and I don't like the direction the country's going in." Boshev had been warned if she didn't appear in Cessnock Local Court on Wednesday then she could be convicted in her absence and a warrant could be issued for her arrest after she has repeatedly failed to attend court and instead sent medical certificates over the past few months. On Wednesday, when again Boshev was a no-show and sent a medical certificate in her stead, the matter was adjourned until May, when she is again listed for sentence. Boshev has pleaded guilty to supplying a prohibited drug, possession of a prohibited drug and attempting to bring a prohibited drug into a place of detention in relation to the 20 strips of buprenorphine and about 1.4 grams of methamphetamine that she was caught with at Cessnock jail on March 2 last year. Court documents indicate she pleaded guilty in January and at that point had intended to apply to have the charges dealt with under mental health and cognitive impairment legislation. Boshev has not appeared in court since and it is unclear if she has legal representation. According to police facts, Boshev and 37-year-old Marie Neowhouse drove into the facility on March 3 last year. They parked and then wrapped 20 buprenorphine tabs in glad wrap before Boshev took the drugs into the correctional centre. Police say intercepted jail calls had revealed the intention was to supply the drugs to an inmate, who had previously served a jail-term for murder. But the telephone intercepts meant Corrective Services NSW were on the lookout for Boshev. She was subjected to a targeted search as she walked into the facility, but was spotted putting an item in her mouth. She later told police: "I didn't want to do it, so it was my way of getting out of it". Corrective Services took Boshev into an interview room and she made admissions to swallowing the package of 20 buprenorphine tablets. Paramedics were called due to concerns Boshev was having an overdose and she was treated by Justice Health staff at the jail before being taken to hospital by ambulance. Corrective Services also searched her handbag and found another bag containing about 1.4 grams of methamphetamine. Neowhouse was spoken to and made admissions about her involvement in the supply attempt. She pleaded guilty last year to supplying a prohibited drug and was placed on a two-year community corrections order. After Boshev had been taken to hospital, police seized the drugs and attempted to contact her by phone to give her the opportunity to be interviewed but were unsuccessful. Boshev was served with the charges at a business address a few weeks later. Today's top stories curated by our news team. Also includes evening update. A Cessnock Bypass is inevitable… but not for another two or three decades That’s according to local state member Clayton Barr With the Hunter accommodating several similar projects at the moment including Singleton (expected to open in late 2026) and the M1 Pacific Motorway extension to Raymond Terrace (2028) along with sections of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass attention has recently shifted to neighbouring townships like Cessnock and Muswellbrook While the latter moves one step closer to fruition with planning already underway via Transport for NSW (TfNSW) the “Coalfields” also looks a likely prospect “There’s a lot of work to be done around the concept of a bypass,” Mr Barr said subsequent acquisitions and the route itself Cessnock City Council is working diligently on building that plan “Only when that’s actually in place can they then approach state or federal governments to seek funding I’m vaguely aware of a development that will ultimately link across to Mount View Road on the north and west side of town will feed into a bypass so that people can head out towards the vineyards without going through the centre of the main street there is a large amount of work that needs to be undertaken by Cessnock City first “They’ve got a broad brush-stroke concept for it there are a lot of things that must happen will part of the proposed route go through land that is still owned by the mining sector and needs to be rehabilitated a bypass is a long-term plan – and a good one.” With the Cessnock LGA among the fastest-growing areas in the state Mr Barr admitted the idea made a lot of sense “I believe all communities will grow eventually to the point where they need to be bypassed,” he told the Newcastle Weekly “We’ve just spent millions and millions of dollars on the Newcastle [Inner City] Bypass and surrounding regions “I think Cessnock’s population is projected to grow from somewhere about 60,000 to 112,000 over the next 15-to-20 years that would indicate we are going to put an increasing amount of pressure on our current roads “Cessnock basically has a single crossroad through the middle of town to head north “There’ll be a time where we need other options “We’ll have to go around it in the future… to take pressure off the main crossover these projects – such as a bypass – can often take 10 or 20 years to even get off the ground so now’s a good opportunity to plan ahead for it.” the Albanese government announced this week $5 million to kick-start the planning process for a future Cessnock Bypass The project will identify an alternative safe route to connect new housing developments at Bellbird in the south-west to Nulkaba in the north and then onwards to the Hunter Expressway Get all the latest Newcastle news, sport, real estate, entertainment, lifestyle and more delivered straight to your inbox with the Newcastle Weekly Daily Newsletter.
