I’m a scholar of the presidency and while we don’t yet know the outcome of the Trump-led negotiations we do know one thing: He’s not conducting them in the ways presidents – including Trump himself – have conducted them in the past There are several examples of presidents who attempted to play a mediating role in foreign conflicts Theodore Roosevelt: Roosevelt won a Nobel Peace Prize for his contributions to ending the 1904-05 Russo-Japanese War, fought over control of Manchuria and Sakhalin Island. Roosevelt had been asked to mediate by Japan, and Russia agreed. In many ways, this episode marked the beginning of the role of the U.S. president as a world leader Jimmy Carter: Carter’s greatest presidential success arguably came in the Camp David Accords, the framework for peace negotiated in 1978 between Israel and Egypt after decades of conflict. Carter did not win a Nobel Prize for his accomplishment, but Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin did Bill Clinton: Clinton made two ambitious attempts to broker peace between old adversaries Clinton’s envoy, former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell, mediated an accord between the British government, the Republic of Ireland and the warring factions in Northern Ireland that was signed on Good Friday 1998 Dealing with a third situation – the wars set off by the disintegration of Yugoslavia– the Clinton administration also obtained an agreement over Bosnia in the 1995 Dayton Accords when the parties were sufficiently exhausted attacks on Israel by Hamas may have been an attempt to stop subsequent efforts to extend the Abraham Accords to Saudi Arabia.) Although all of these examples involved presidential leadership and involvement Roosevelt never attended the peace negotiations over the Russo-Japanese War in Portsmouth, but he actively offered proposals through intermediaries before and during the conference The final stages of negotiation were held on his yacht Carter’s breakthrough came when he engaged in intense personal diplomacy at Camp David, where he, Sadat and Begin were sequestered for 13 days. To complete the deal, Carter had to shuffle back and forth between the principals and at one point had to make a frantic appeal to Sadat not to leave Clinton’s unsuccessful efforts to broker an agreement between Arafat and a succession of Israeli prime ministers extended over the duration of his two-term presidency and frequently involved personal meetings and exchanges On the other hand, Clinton’s involvement in the Northern Ireland resolution did not primarily come in the form of personal diplomacy at the end of the process. Rather, he set the conditions for a settlement earlier when he approved a visa for Irish Republican leader Gerry Adams to enter the U.S. against the wishes of Britain and Clinton’s own advisers When Clinton went to Belfast for a Christmas tree lighting in 1995, he brought together Catholic leaders committed to the unification of Ireland and Protestant leaders loyal to Britain First lady Hillary Clinton also contributed by meeting with Irish women’s organizations on both sides In contrast, in the Dayton process Clinton was later portrayed by chief negotiator Richard Holbrooke as essentially disengaged where sensitive issues of land possession were involved many of the negotiations benefited from privacy in the process Second, successful mediations came most often when the U.S. was neutral, such as in the Portsmouth negotiations, or friendly toward both parties to some degree, such as with the Camp David, Good Friday and Abraham negotiations. Dayton was the exception in that the U.S This is a highly controversial and risky strategy that has damaged relations with U.S. allies and cost the U.S. moral capital in pursuit of an uncertain peace Whatever success Trump ultimately achieves which has been pursued over a period of six months so far has been more difficult than he anticipated Share on FacebookShare on X (formerly Twitter)Share on PinterestShare on LinkedIn PLATTSBURGH (WCAX) - the Clinton county health department wants you to keep an eye out for ticks next time you are outdoors A spokesperson with the health department says adult ticks are the most common during this time of year and can be found in areas like tall grass She says people should wear long light colored pants tucked into socks and use approved repellent to ward off ticks they say it’s important to remove it as soon as possible by either brushing it away or using tweezers You do not want to put anything on it to release it from the skin You want to pull that tick out with the tweezers,” said Molly Flynn Principal public health educator from the Clinton county Health Department Flynn says there were 162 tick borne illnesses recorded in Clinton County last year (2024) CLINTON — Multiple fire agencies responded to a house fire in Clinton on Thursday afternoon When the responding agencies arrived on Pine Cone Drive Crews then began to search inside the house for anyone inside Crews managed to contain the fire to one room but the northern end of the house sustained pretty significant fire damage unfortunately," Missoula Rural Fire District Battalion Chief Ron Lubke said There was one person in the basement who wasn’t aware of the fire but a neighbor knocked on their door to get them out The cause of the fire remains under investigation community and dignitaries honored the life of Molly McGovern Bernard's Catholic Church of Our Lady of Providence Parish on May 3 that “losing a child is cruel But there was an overriding sense in the stories shared by McGovern funny and had developed a vast network of friends that spanned the globe “She was bright and beautiful,” said McGovern choking back tears from the church lectern Elizabeth Warren and Edward Markey in attendance “Molly made the world a better place and she made us better Molly died April 23 while visiting family friends in Assisi She contracted a rare form of cancer in 2019 was in treatment through a clinical trial at New York Presbyterian Hospital and set to graduate this month from Northeastern University where she studied political science and international affairs Molly never let her illness stop her from living life on her terms citing her decision to study abroad last semester at Bond University in Queensland Lisa McGovern shared her daughter’s lifelong love of water Molly luxuriated in water and was known to take long showers and baths She watched many television shows and movies with water themes her favorite being “Aquamarine,” about a teenage mermaid that it rained May 2 when a line of well-wishers extended for many blocks at St Bernard’s Church to pay their respects to the family “There was an incredible rainbow (that day) I know that was Molly,” said Lisa McGovern Irreverent and funny and a passionate fan of the Boston Bruins were some of the descriptions Patrick used to describe his sister while making a point to express his gratitude for the years he had with his sister He visited her in Australia and said Molly awoke at 5 a.m and took a two-hour bus ride so she could meet him at the airport She showed him around her college campus and they explored the island of Tasmania off the coast of Australia with Molly making friends with everyone she connected with along the way “She made everything a party that everyone wanted to be a part of,” said Patrick Jonathan Slavinskas met Molly was in a hospital room at UMass Memorial Health after she was diagnosed with cancer and recalled getting a phone call from Molly at 1:30 a.m when she told him she had been drinking with friends "A girl at her age should never have to ask that question," said Slavinskas."Her life was shortened McGovern shared stories from the lectern that drove home that point She never wanted to acknowledge odd numbers toasting twice at parties and pressing the electronic lock on her car eight times "We do that now," said McGovern rather incredulously of the eight clicks to lock the car McGovern recalled Molly as a child who wanted to go to the center of the earth after reading Jules Verne's "Journey to the Center of the Earth." (AP Photo/Alonzo Adams) Clinton, now 78, was widely praised for how he helped the city grapple with its grief in the wake of the bombing, which killed 168 people, including 19 children. He says it was a day in his presidency that he will never forget. “I still remember as if it were 30 minutes ago, coming here with Hillary to that memorial service and saying: ‘You have lost too much, but you have not lost everything. You have certainly not lost America, and we will be with you for as many tomorrows as it takes,’” Clinton said, recalling his first visit to Oklahoma City just days after the bombing, when he spoke at a memorial service for the for the victims. “I do think we’ve kept that commitment.” On Saturday, Clinton also cautioned about the polarizing nature of modern-day politics and how such divisiveness can lead to violence, as it did 30 years ago. He said there is much the nation can learn from the “Oklahoma Standard,” a term coined to reference the city’s response to the bombing by uniting in service, honor and kindness. “Today, Oklahoma City, America needs you,” he said. “I wish to goodness every American could just see life unfold here, hearing these stories.” Other speakers included former Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating and former Oklahoma City Mayor Ron Norick, who were in office when the bombing occurred. Family members of some of those killed in the bombing read the 168 names of those killed in the attack. Saturday’s ceremony was originally scheduled to take place on the grounds of the memorial but was moved inside an adjacent church because of heavy rains. Among the memorial’s top missions is to help people understand the senselessness of political violence and teach a new generation about the impact of the bombing, said Kari Watkins, the memorial’s president and CEO. “We knew when we built this place we would some day reach a generation of people who weren’t born or who didn’t remember the story,” Watkins said. “I think now, not just kids are coming through more and more, but teachers who are teaching those kids.” CNN and the BBC World Service which is copyright and cannot be reproduced AEST = Australian Eastern Standard Time which is 10 hours ahead of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) by Phil Howard — As the weather warms up NBC Montana ventured up to Rock Creek outside of Clinton to fish the lower section of the river Warmer weather means Rock Creek and other rivers around Montana are starting to rise-- making conditions fast and dirty That's why John Staats, the owner of Rock Creek Fishermans' Mercantile says he recommends sticking to slow shallow water this time of year as a safety precaution "Minimize your wading to just going over marshy side channels or anywhere it gets wet just to get to the main stem of the river and don't get in the river itself," Staats said River conditions can change fast-- that's why John recommends checking the USGS Flow Chart for the spot you plan to fish before heading out. This time of year-- most of the action is going to be sub-surface with nymphs and streamers. Here's a look at what we used up Rock Creek: NBC Montana did see some fish rising for March Browns and Blue Wings-- but with the river hovering around 1,000 cubic feet per second and rising-- the best shot at fish will be getting a nymph in deeper holes. “If you know how to get to those fish and how to put the flies on them, then it can be a productive day, but it’s definitely more work at this time of the year," Staats said. Don't let all this muddy water get you down though-- hit the vise-- tie up some salmon flies and remember those big bugs will be the first thing you throw when the water levels out. in the neighboring township He arrived at Westchester Terrace in minutes where he met Officer Malanga; the two men weren’t strangers had taught Malanga when he was elementary school and Hedden had given the students fire demonstrations As Hedden approached the front door Malanga popped his head out and said there was a lot of smoke in the apartment The officer said he could see and smell the smoke from the front door who grew up around a firehouse since he was 15 knew they could quickly lose control of the fire in the multifamily building The two men then entered the apartment to perform a quick search in the smoky unit "On the way back from performing my search I swept back by the bathroom where the door was really hot There was smoke probably in the top two to three feet of the room,” the chief said I didn't want to give it too much oxygen in case we didn't have a fire truck there I opened the door; I found the fire and I went to close it and as I was going to close it Malanga said the smoke conditions were extremely heavy and there was a fire in between the trapped woman and the exit through the bathroom door He moved a small table on fire to help reach the woman who was on the floor between the vanity and the toilet and got her out of the room before closing the door The chief ran back to his truck to get his fire extinguisher and as he was running back into the apartment he passed Malanga who was carrying the woman out He yelled over his radio that an ambulance was needed at the front door Malanga explained that once the woman was in the hallway he realized she was elderly and not able to quickly evacuate so he made the decision to pick her up and carry her outside where the South Branch Rescue Squad was already on scene he blasted the fire with the extinguisher before it ran out and then waited for a tanker to put out the blaze which apparently started in a pile of towels or laundry and spread to towels hanging on the wall who went to the hospital to be checked for smoke inhalation said the last update he received is that the woman is still alive who arrived at his buddy's house with fire extinguisher agent all over his shoes in time for his daughter's homecoming photos said he was glad he was home that day and able to get to the scene so quickly to help save a life And Malanga credits his department with providing good training from good supervisors who promote good work He said the training he's received gives him the confidence to make decisions he did that day without hesitation "I feel like when you are on the scene and reality of the Lewinsky affair One of the grim lessons of the #MeToo movement and its long backlash is this: whether someone finds a sexual abuse allegation credible largely depends on their pre-existing opinion of the man accused When a woman comes forward with an account of a man’s mistreatment of her – be it humiliating boorishness violent rape or any of the range of degradations and hurts that fall along the wide spectrum between – the listener’s response is fairly predictable who has remained silently beside her husband throughout each of the allegations against him – and retained her feminist credibility despite her loyalty to an allegedly abusive man that I can only describe as canine People who like Bill Clinton or who find him convenient for their own goals have a long history of underplaying the multiple allegations of sexual harassment and violence that he faces from at least four women the former Arkansas state employee who sued Bill Clinton for sexual harassment after the then governor brought her to his hotel room is lying – even though Jones has multiple corroborating witnesses and even though her story has not changed in more than 30 years the woman who says that Clinton raped her in a hotel room in 1978 told multiple people of Clinton’s attack at the time the 22-year-old unpaid intern whom Clinton carried on an affair with in the White House when he was 49 and the most powerful person in the world technically consented to the sex acts that Clinton asked her to do – an insistence that betrays a startlingly simple-minded and willfully obtuse understanding of sexual ethics They echo Clinton’s denials of wrongdoing in all these cases, against all these women. That is, at least, what they say when they acknowledge the allegations about Bill Clinton’s conduct at all. Mostly, they ignore them – as Bill Clinton has and as Bill Clinton’s popular legacy seems to do Bill Clinton’s supporters ignore his accusers because they can their equality and their right to control their own bodies matter less to them than their esteem for Bill Clinton – less than whether he can deliver a few votes make a zinger on television or look nice in a suit On Wednesday night, the third night of the Democratic national convention the whole party ignored these women when they gave Bill Clinton a multiply accused alleged sexual harasser and rapist a rousing welcome at Chicago’s United Center The former president was given a prime-time speaking spot trotted out like a prize and applauded like a hero the 2024 election is quickly shaping up to be about gender sex-obsessed JD Vance and the radically anti-choice Republican party turning the contest into a referendum on the status of women in American society the Democratic nominee who will seek to become the nation’s first female president on election day has taken on the mantle of the women’s struggle – not only in the symbolism of her candidacy in which she has championed the “freedom” of women to control their own bodies and lives These are noble goals, ones that the Democrats can be proud of pursuing; but they are not commensurate with celebrations of an alleged rapist with pomp and obsequiousness trotted out for a man who allegedly habitually sexually harassed women who worked for him and carried on an affair with an intern young enough to be his daughter is hostile to women’s freedom – the freedom of women to live work and participate in public without the threat of sexual force This is a kind of gendered freedom that Bill Clinton has made it abundantly clear that he does not respect sexually entitled misogynists are not all Republicans – rape have always been bipartisan endeavors – but they are not the kind of voters that Democrats should be courting A bargain in which women’s right to end a pregnancy is made in exchange for men’s right to rape harass and abuse women is not an acceptable one We can do better: we can reach for a version of America in which women are truly free and equal self-determination and sexual autonomy that men are That’s not the world that Bill Clinton represents and it’s not a world that a party that insists on celebrating him can deliver Bill Clinton has been out of office for nearly three decades his once-rosy status as a liberal hero has thankfully dimmed even if his alleged history of sexual abuse has not played a sufficient role in the reassessment of his reputation Liberals now rightly look back at Clinton’s crime bill with horror; his devastating cuts to the welfare system were punitive and cruel He modeled a vision of a conservative Democratic party one less committed to its principles than in cynically trading them away for a chance at power and his political project has been revealed as morally bankrupt It’s not clear that he can even deliver many votes; a large swath of the American electorate is now too young to remember much of his presidency It’s time for Democrats to send the old man home And to tell him to keep his hands to himself A federal judge ruled Friday that President Donald Trump's executive order targeting the law firm that represented political foe Hilary Clinton was unconstitutional and permanently blocked his administration from enforcing the order called for the immediate suspension of any active security clearances held by Perkins Coie law firm employees It directed government agencies to require contractors to disclose any business with the firm and agency leaders to review all contracts with the company or entities doing business with it The order also limited access by the law firm's employees to federal buildings and government workers "Using the powers of the federal government to target lawyers for their representation of clients and avowed progressive employment policies in an overt attempt to suppress and punish certain viewpoints which requires that the government respond to dissenting or unpopular speech or ideas with 'tolerance not coercion,'" US District Judge Beryl Howell wrote in her ruling Howell noted that Trump's directive sought to punish Perkins Coie and sent a message that "lawyers must stick to the party line or else." The judge also found that the executive order violated the first fifth and sixth amendments to the Constitution Perkins Coie represented former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential election The company hired a research firm that retained former British spy Christopher Steele conspiracy and cooperation between Trump's campaign and the Russian government leading up to the election The decision from Howell is the first in one of four cases brought by law firms that have been targeted and penalized by Trump because of their associations with people and political causes that the president disfavors The other three firms -- Jenner & Block Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr and Susman Godfrey -- have filed lawsuits challenging their respective executive orders have reached agreements with the White House to avoid being penalized by the president include commitments to provide between $40 million and $125 million in pro bono legal work Howell referenced the nine firms in her ruling and said they appeared to have received Trump's suggestion that they may be subject to punishment unless they agree to his terms Howell added that the executive order targeting Perkins Coie "presents an unprecedented attack" on the principles of the American judicial system and "stigmatizes and penalizes" the firm and its employees because of its past and current representation of clients that take positions that the president disfavors "If the founding history of this country is any guide those who stood up in court to vindicate constitutional rights and will be the models lauded when this period of American history is written," said Howell by Stephanie Ryan officers responded to reports of a stabbing at the intersection of Clinton Avenue and Ontario Street they found a 38-year-old man with a stab wound to the abdomen First responders treated the man at the scene before transporting him to Albany Medical Center His injuries are considered non-life-threatening Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Albany Police Detectives Division at 518-462-8039 Former US secretary of state makes remark on X amid scandal over use of private server for classified information Clinton punctuated her reaction on the X platform with an eyes emoji and a link to an Atlantic article that revealed how Trump officials inadvertently broadcast plans of US airstrikes on Houthi rebels through a Signal group chat with a journalist reading along Trump and his supporters criticized her ruthlessly for her classified emails and private server use before and after he defeated her in the presidential election nine years earlier Among them were some of the participants in the group chat reported on by the Atlantic: the secretary of defense Marco Rubio; He got funding for 100,000 new police officers nationwide. He signed the 1993 Brady Bill requiring a waiting period and background check to purchase handguns. Clinton’s 1994 Crime Bill included a ban on assault weapons, and there was a 40 percent decline in gun crime by 2001. [8] Clinton’s Goals 2000 program distributed two billion dollars between 1994 and 1999 to set uniform standards in US schools. His 1994 Improving America’s School Act (IASA) received support from Republicans and Democrats and from the education and business communities. IASA required that standards and accountability be the same for economically disadvantaged students as for other students. [12] Clinton was aware of the threat of Al Qaeda and authorized the CIA to kill Osama bin Laden. He sought to hunt down bin Laden after the Oct. 12, 2000 attack on the USS Cole, but the CIA and FBI refused to certify bin Laden’s involvement in the terrorist act. “I got closer to killing him than anybody’s gotten since,” Clinton said in a Sep. 24, 2006 interview with Chris Wallace. [27] The number of federal prisoners doubled under Clinton, and 58 percent of them were serving time for drug-related offenses. Resources were geared towards incarceration instead of rehabilitation or crime prevention. [29] Clinton’s 1994 Crime Bill was filled with “pork spending” that distributed $10 billion to states and special interest groups. [30] Clinton was unable to fulfill his campaign promise to repeal the ban on homosexuals serving in the military. Faced with strong opposition from conservatives early in his presidency, Clinton settled on a compromise policy referred to as “don’t ask, don’t tell,” which allowed gays to serve in the military if they did not disclose their sexual orientation. Neither conservatives nor liberals were satisfied by the outcome. [24] Clinton gets too much credit for the good economy of the 1990s, which was already growing when he took office. The Republican-controlled Congress helped improve the economy by exercising fiscal restraint. [31] Clinton’s failure to regulate the financial-services markets enabled the bad lending and Wall Street scams that led to the 2007 banking crisis. [32] Clinton’s Goals 2000 program did not ensure uniform quality of standards among all the states because he compromised on oversight to get the program passed. The impact therefore varied by state and Clinton never fulfilled his goal of equalizing education standards and improving results for all students. By 2000, six years after IASA was implemented, only 17 states were in full compliance with the standards. [12] Clinton cut NASA’s budget by $715 million in 1995 (about 5%) and did not restore the bulk of the money until three months before he left office. The result was a space program struggling to operate with less money for most of Clinton’s time in office. Some blame the 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia explosion on Clinton’s decision to slash NASA’s budget by an aggregate of $56 million over his presidency. [39] London tells PEOPLE she and her co-host "learned a lot in between 'What Not to Wear' and this show" that debuts on Prime Video April 29 Prime VideoScott Gries/The Learning Channel/Courtesy Everett On the 30th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing former President Bill Clinton shares a story about a member of his Secret Service detail Clinton was the sitting president when the bombing occurred on April 19 CNN Chief White House Correspondent Kaitlan Collins gives an inside look on the grounds of the White House for the week of President Trump's first 100 days of his second term '+n.escapeExpression("function"==typeof(o=null!=(o=r(e,"eyebrowText")||(null!=l?r(l,"eyebrowText"):l))?o:n.hooks.helperMissing)?o.call(null!=l?l:n.nullContext||{},{name:"eyebrowText",hash:{},data:t,loc:{start:{line:28,column:63},end:{line:28,column:78}}}):o)+" \n '+(null!=(o=c(e,"if").call(r,null!=l?c(l,"cta2PreText"):l,{name:"if",hash:{},fn:n.program(32,t,0),inverse:n.noop,data:t,loc:{start:{line:63,column:20},end:{line:63,column:61}}}))?o:"")+"\n"+(null!=(o=(c(e,"ifAll")||l&&c(l,"ifAll")||n.hooks.helperMissing).call(r,null!=l?c(l,"cta2Text"):l,null!=l?c(l,"cta2Link"):l,{name:"ifAll",hash:{},fn:n.program(34,t,0),inverse:n.noop,data:t,loc:{start:{line:64,column:20},end:{line:70,column:30}}}))?o:"")+" Years after What Not To Wear’s Clinton Kelly and Stacy London went public with their feud in the late 2010s they detailed how their show Wear Whatever the F You Want parallels their friendship Clinton Kelly and Stacy London are done power clashing In addition to the outdated rules for mixing fabrics the former What Not To Wear stylists have also thrown out their beef for good sharing that their new Prime Video show Wear Whatever the F You Want has helped them reclaim control of the narrative around their relationship deep love for each other that comes from years of experience,” Stacy told E “and working with each other and one rift is not going to destroy our friendship.” has helped them create an even deeper connection “If you just assume that you know what somebody else is thinking And now that all that water is under the bridge, the fashion duo are ready to put their not-so-new but improved friendship on display in their new Prime Video show more than a decade after their original series ended in 2013 “What Not To Wear was canceled 13 years ago but then it played in repeats for years after that and then it gets picked up on TikTok and Instagram and you have the whole world looking at old versions of us,” Clinton explained this is really a great opportunity to be like ‘Oh the stuff that you’re watching that’s 23 years old The pair are also looking forward to proving their fashion prowess beyond their mastery of mid-aughts to mid-2010s styles.  “We have been accused of all sorts of things from What Not To Wear—the fact that we’re the nicest people on Earth, the meanest people on Earth, how politically incorrect it was,” Stacy admitted. “What a wonderful thing to be able to do a 180 and really do a show that expresses what is going on in fashion today and expresses how people are feeling about fashion.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Amazon MGM Studios (@amazonmgmstudios) the same old Stacy and Clinton dynamic is still there “Chemistry like this does not happen,” Clinton gushed While the hatchet between Clinton and Stacy is buried and forgotten keep reading for more famous celebrity feuds…  Bobby (pictured second from left) addressed rumors of a falling out with Tan (middle) in January 2024 two months after he announced his exit from Queer Eye after eight seasons "I want people to know that Tan and I—we will be fine," he told Vanity Fair It was something personal that had been brewing—and nothing romantic In March 2024, Tan responded to allegations that he had campaigned to replace Bobby on Queer Eye with his friend Jeremiah Brent "Netflix and the production companies did a full-on casting I didn't put my friend up for the job They ended up getting it because they were the best person for the job," he said on Instagram "But I didn't get them hired by getting rid of somebody else."
