There will be temporary changed traffic conditions on sections of the Great Western Highway between Hewitt Street and Bennett Road at Colyton next month
Transport for NSW says the changes are necessary for road maintenance work which will improve safety for road users by creating a smoother road surface
The work will take place over up to four-night shifts between Thursday
“Our working hours will be from 7pm to 5am
No work will occur on Friday or Saturday nights,” a spokesperson said
“There will be some temporary traffic changes while our work takes place including road closures
lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h.”
The following closures and detours will be in place:
• Melbourne Street will be closed between Great Western Highway and Adelaide Street during our night work hours and access will only be allowed for local residents
• Road users wishing to access Great Western Highway from Adelaide Street
Canberra Street or Brisbane Street will need to use the detours via Sydney Street
There will also be no right turn permitted for traffic wishing to travel westbound on Great Western Highway from Woodland Avenue
The Great Western Highway will remain open at all times
Pedestrian access between Melbourne Street and Great Western Highway will not be affected
Residents and businesses will still have access to their properties

Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious crash at Colyton last month
emergency services were called to Carlisle Avenue
following reports of a head on crash between two vehicles
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the 17-year-old female driver of a black Suzuki Swift at the scene
She was taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious condition and has since been released from hospital
The 51-year-old male driver of a white Toyota Corolla was also taken to the same hospital as the other driver
A passenger in the Toyota – a 13-year-old girl – was conveyed to Westmead Childrens Hospital
Both occupants of the Toyota remain hospitalised and are in a serious but stable condition
Officers from Nepean Police Area Command established a crime scene that was later examined by the Crash Investigation Unit
investigators are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the crash – or has any available dashcam/mobile phone footage – to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000
Colyton is set to receive a retail boost after Penrith City Council approved a Development Application (DA) for a mixed-use construction in the area
The new development is situated at 30 Day Street in Colyton and will see both retail spaces and a child care centre realised
“The development seeks Council consent to a two storey building that provides nine separate tenancies at the ground level and a child care centre (90 children) at the first floor level,” the Statement of Environmental Effects (SEE) attached to the DA said
A two level basement car park will also be built to cater for the new development
The existing single story building on the premises
will be demolished to pave way for the new construction
The proposed child care centre will cater for children under five years of age
“[The child care centre] also includes a foyer
“Outdoor areas and spaces include… outdoor learning spaces
An acoustic report was conducted to assess the impact of the implementation of a child care centre in the community which noted that children are limited to four hours of outside play
“Since the time in which children are involved in outdoor play can be limited
the potential impact associated with these noise emissions reduces,” the Acoustic Report attached to the DA said
The child care centre is planned to operate Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm with no staff or deliveries to arrive before 6.45am each day
The proposed basement car park will provide over 70 car parking spaces to be shared between the nine retail premises and the child care centre
“That vehicles entry then provides access to two basement levels of car parking that provides a total of 72 car parking spaces in the basement levels,” the SEE said
“This includes a total of five accessible car parking spaces
“The parking spaces are to be allocated to each land uses as follows: Retail – 41 [and] Child Care Centre – 31.”
The development is overall considered to be a positive addition to the Colyton community
“The proposal is considered to have only positive impacts on the local economy and viability of the neighbourhood centre through the creation of additional on-site customers that will also improve safety of the centre through passive surveillance,” the SEE said
“The development will also create new local employment opportunities during the construction stage of the development.”

Knives and baseball bats have been seized by Police after a brawl left a man in hospital with serious head injuries
Police say the brawl at Colyton late last night was extremely violent
“The injuries suffered to the primary victim is in one of the worst categories of assault I’ve seen in a long time,” said Detective Inspector Steve Peroni from Nepean Police Area Command
emergency services were called to Carpenter Street where they found a 20-year-old man with serious head injuries
He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Westmead Hospital
The man’s three friends were also assaulted and are receiving hospital treatment

Police have been told the injured men were confronted by a group while walking along Carpenter Street
Officers are now searching for the men involved
They were spotted bagging evidence on Sunday including knives and baseball bats
Peroni said Police were investigating “multiple lines of enquiry”

It was the first time a serving Cambridge Vice-Chancellor had travelled to the region in an official capacity to engage with local schools and alumni
The South West of England has one of the country’s lowest levels of student progression into higher education
One of the key objectives of the visit was to engage with pupils and teachers in an area that is conspicuously under-represented in applications and admissions to Cambridge
where Professor Prentice talked to school leaders about the barriers encountered by students from the region wishing to attend university
Joining her were representatives from Downing College
which has a particular connection to the area
Head of Widening Participation and Collaborative Outreach
The University of Cambridge and Downing College have partnered with the University of Bristol and the Sutton Trust to support the Colyton Foundation Your Future Story – a programme that aims to support high attaining students from under-resourced backgrounds in the South West to pursue higher education opportunities
the Vice-Chancellor attended a reception in Bristol which was attended by nearly 50 Cambridge alumni
The following day the Vice-Chancellor travelled to North Somerset for a visit to Priory Community School
Mike Nicholson led a school assembly for year 11 students
Access and Recruitment Officer of Trinity Hall
led assemblies for 1,500 students in Years 7 through to 10
The Vice-Chancellor and colleagues were interviewed by members of a student news team named after the journalist Jill Dando
The visitors noted that among the school’s notable alumni was Stephen Jenkins
Professor of Physical and Computational Surface Chemistry at Cambridge
a further and higher education College in Weston-super-Mare that provides education and vocational training to students from the age of 14 through to adulthood
There the group met Sixth Form students to hear about their aspirations
The final leg of the journey took the Cambridge delegation to St Bede’s Catholic and Sixth Form College in Bristol
through which the University of Cambridge and Colleges work together with schools FE establishments across the country to encourage applications from talented students
the Vice-Chancellor said: “Travelling to the South West allowed me to learn more about the region and to understand some of the barriers to aspiration and attainment that prevent bright students from pursuing higher education
Their teachers’ commitment to supporting their educational journey is outstanding
I hope that the outreach partnerships between the University
the Colleges and local schools will help us attract talented students to Cambridge
and will more generally encourage them to consider going to university.”
This visit to the South West followed the Vice-Chancellor’s trip to Rochdale
Manchester and Liverpool a year ago and her visit to Peterborough in the autumn of 2024

and is now doing everything he can to support his parents in getting back on their feet
The home on Milton Street was purchased 34 years ago
he recalls endless happy memories between the now crumbling walls
It felt like we were grieving a loss,” he told the Weekender
“I look at the house and I think of me and my sister running a muck up and down the hallway

The family have tackled both health issues and family trauma over the last 10 years
with Aoun adding that the fire was “the last thing they ever needed”

I’ve seen her be very emotional with family tragedies and health issues
but I’ve never seen her cry when there’s just nothing I can do.”
Aoun notes that the support from the local community
both immediately following the incident and in the days that have followed
“The first person to the scene was a woman who messaged me on Facebook
she was there comforting Mum first before anyone got there
“People we’ve never met and our neighbours came out
with Aoun and other relatives doing their best to put them up temporarily
“I look at my parents and I think about my parents

Christmas lights are a highlight of every holiday season but the big man behind a dazzling local display is retiring after 21 years
Colyton resident George Asciak has slowly grown his decorations at 7 Arcadia Place into a community attraction that is visited yearly by hundreds of people
Mr Asciak began dressing up as Santa and realised he could make a difference with his jolly demeanour
“I started doing Santa Claus when my Mum and Dad were still alive and when my Mum went into a nursing home I would visit,” Mr Asciak said
“I did it at home as well to go with the lights and then started getting donations for Westmead Hospital for three years and since 2017 I’ve been donating the funds to Nepean Hospital.”
along with visiting sick kids and making appearances at other Christmas events for charities
there is a large amount of work that goes into transforming the home so that it is merry and bright
“It is a hard job so I can start as early as August or September,” he said
“I spend about $1500 to $2000 a year as well to buy toys
lollies and drinks to hand out to the kids that get photos with me.”
Set to turn 70-years-old next month and having ongoing health problems
Mr Asciak has had to make the hard decision to host his weeklong annual event for the final year
“I was in a car accident which has taken a toll on me
I have to have surgery on my shoulder because I have ripped the tendons so between that and my age it is becoming too much,” he said
“I have loved donating my time and effort for the community and the hospitals
The community is invited to visit Santa during the week leading up to Christmas
“I will be there seven nights from the 18th of December between 8pm to midnight so I hope there is a good turn out to end on a high and I am so thankful for everyone’s generosity over the years,” he said
“On the 22nd the EK Racing Fender Benders will have cars on display and on the 23rd the Unwanted Few will bring some great bikes for people to see.”

Colyton is officially home to Australia’s best service station, with their Shell Service Station being awarded as a joint winner of the Australian Association of Convenience Stores Independent Store of the Year and overall Store of the Year awards.
The store, which was previously a Coles Express, was taken over by Eddy and Ted Nader in June last year, transforming it from one of Australia’s worst, to undoubtedly the best.
One of the things that sets their store apart from others in the area is their hot food, with the store offering fresh meal options for any time of day.
“We just felt like there was a blank spot when it comes to fast food,” Ted Nader told the Weekender.
“At one or two in the morning, there’s no good food options aside from McDonald’s or a pie at a servo. We wanted to give people the chance to be able to eat a fresh meal at whatever time they want, while getting coffee, fuel, whatever they need.”
The store is also well-known for their low fuel prices, having started a fierce competition with surrounding service stations.
“We found that there was no real competition in this area. Unless you’re an independent that didn’t have a brand associated with your store, no one would really sell fuel at a reasonable price out here,” Mr Nader said.
“When we first opened, we wanted to change that, because, why not sell fuel at a reasonable price? Why should fuel be expensive?”
Despite being open for less than a year, much of which was spent in lockdown, the store was able to take out the top trophy, putting them in the running for the International competition.
“We were stoked when we got the Independent award – taking photos, enjoying the moment – and then all of a sudden, 10 minutes later, we were called up for the overall award, which is the biggest award within the industry,” Mr Nader said.
“That one was a shock, I personally didn’t even know the award existed until it was announced, and we were up on stage accepting the bigger award, so it still hasn’t sunk in that we won it. It’s good to put Colyton on the map.”

Jed Coates died after being shot in the neck in Nevada Avenue at Colyton. (Facebook)
Link copiedShareShare articleA man killed after a fight at a pub during last night's State of Origin game confronted his alleged attacker with a shovel moments before being shot dead, court documents show.
New South Wales rugby supporter Jed Coates, 18, and Queensland fan Matthew Perry, 21, were watching the game at the Colyton hotel in Sydney's west when police say a fight broke out between the men, who were high school acquaintances.
Court documents say Mr Coates and a friend he had been drinking with were ejected from the bar but later confronted Perry at his home, in nearby Nevada Avenue, just after 11pm (AEST).
Police have alleged Perry was armed with a rifle while Coates had a shovel and had shouted "shoot me, shoot me".
Perry allegedly shot him once in the neck and fled the scene.
Coates was treated at the scene by paramedics but later died at Westmead Hospital.
Police think the fight at the pub is what sparked the shooting but Detective Inspector Barry Vincent said it was unclear what the pair was fighting over.
"We believe that an incident predicated what happened here in the street, so certainly anyone who may have been present, that was witness to an assault or incident at Colyton Hotel, if they could contact the police," he said.
Perry was arrested at his home about 3am and charged with murder.
He faced Mount Druitt local court via video link today and was refused bail.
Coates had celebrated his 18th birthday with his twin brother Sam less than two weeks ago and the trip to watch the State of Origin was his first time legally drinking at the local pub.
Sam posted a tribute on his Facebook saying: "RIP Jed, my brother, my twin, your [sic] a king in my eyes, love you bro."

An iconic green home in Sydney has just hit the market
but in a markedly different hue to the original colour
4 Bennett Road, Colyton is a local landmark known for its bright green facade
but has recently been repainted to a sober grey prior to being listed for sale
The house has an impressive street presence and had been painted entirely green by the owner
starting from the roof and down to the walls
The local green landmark at 4 Bennett Road
says the house was built in the late 1970s by two brothers
with the older of the two undertaking the actual construction of the house
It is solidly built with a dark brick interior
a large kitchen and dining area plus extensive lounge space
The yard is not too big but there are three massive balconies
There is nothing like it in the area,” Soliman says
The younger brother of the two brothers is selling the home under probate following the passing of his older brother last year
Soliman was briefed by the younger brother
and believes the older brother lived alone in the house and was the one who painted it green
“The older brother that owned it actually lost his mental faculties and started seeing everything a bit strange,” Soliman says
“They obviously can’t sell it in that condition so they have painted it a more palatable and conservative colour.”
Locals have floated a number of theories on why the owners initially decided to paint the entire home green
It has long been alleged the house was painted green following the death of the owner’s wife
whose favourite colour was green and thus the entire house was painted that colour in her honour
Another view is the owners went through a messy divorce where the husband didn’t want the wife to have the proceeds of the house sale
so he painted it green to depreciate the value
The house has been repainted to a sober grey
Equally as creative is the rumour that the owner killed his family in a car accident when driving under the influence
He then painted the home green which symbolises forgiveness and in a gesture to embarrass himself
The house features a number of unique finishes including ornate floor-to ceiling tiles

A teenage girl has tragically died after being hit by a car at Colyton earlier today
The accident happened on the Great Western Highway just after 2pm
Officers attached to Nepean Police Area Command attended
and treated the 14-year-old girl for head injuries
The girl was taken to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead but despite efforts from paramedics
“Police were told that a White Nissan Pulsar
collided with the teen near Bennett Street,” a police spokesperson said
“The driver of the Nissan has been taken to hospital for mandatory testing.”
Witnesses to the aftermath of the incident described a harrowing scene
“God bless the people who had stopped to help this person
They were performing CPR when we drove past
Horrific scene to see,” one witness said on Facebook
All eastbound lanes were closed on the Great Western Highway with traffic being diverted down Sydney Street

A man shot dead outside a house in Sydney's west on Thursday night is believed to have had previous links to an outlaw motorcycle gang
Police have been scouring Coral Pea Court in Colyton to investigate the shooting of Adrian Buxton
in what they believe was not a random attack
Mr Buxton appeared to be taking the bins out when he was gunned down
while his wife and child were reportedly inside the house
Residents on Coral Pea Court phoned triple zero to report hearing up to five gunshots ring out just after 9pm
Adrian Buxton was shot dead outside his Colyton home in May
Mr Buxton was found lying outside the house suffering gunshot wounds
Paramedics arrived but he died at the scene
It is understood witnesses told police that two people
their faces concealed beneath hoodies and balaclavas
were seen running from the cul-de-sac immediately after the gunshots were heard
No one had been arrested over the shooting by Saturday morning
Police have been examining CCTV footage from the victim's house

One woman who lives about 50 metres from the house where the man was shot said she arrived home on Thursday night to find police everywhere
She said she was told to "get my kiddies inside and stay safe"
"I hope the person responsible is found soon
I live not even 50 metres away and it's scary to know someone is out there," she wrote online
Detectives and forensic officers remained at the house on Friday morning
A NSW Police spokeswoman said Homicide Squad detectives and police officers from the St Marys Local Area Command are still investigating the man's death
Police have appealed for anyone with information about the shooting to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000

It is not hard to spot the green house on the corner of the Great Western Highway and Bennett Road at Colyton
but the man living inside is a different story
had not been seen by neighbours in three weeks
The Weekender understands a neighbour called St Marys Police at about 1.15pm today following concerns for the man’s welfare
Local police searched the Bennett Road home and found a number of suspicious items
which aroused our suspicions,” said St Marys Acting Inspector
Police found a barricade set up at the front door of the premises made up of a table and astack of boxes that reached eye level
“Obviously it made it extremely difficult for police to enter and make an assessment of the area,” Mr Shirvington said
The 69-year-old man was not known to police
but it is understood he had faced problems with youth in the past
“He was located within the house but he was quite cooperative and helpful with our enquiries,” Mr Shirvington said
“He had problems with local youth throwing rocks through the windows and giving him ahard time.”
The 69-year-old was taken to hospital to be assessed
About 15 surrounding homes were evacuated whilst the operation was underway
“With situations like this we need to treat as worst case
This is the reason that we cornered off the area and ensured that the public were safe,” Mr Shirvington said
but police are still at the scene continuing with inquiries
