As of February 2025: people are advised to not consume fish and seafood caught from Coolangatta Creek and the stormwater system near the Gold Coast Airport
Airservices Australia
is conducting a Detailed Site Investigation into the extent of contamination caused by the historic use of firefighting foam containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) at areas Airservices Australia leased and operated on at the Gold Coast Airport
This investigation is expected to be completed in 2025
crustaceans and molluscs were sampled in areas adjacent to Gold Coast Airport in 2024 and the sampling test results were shared with the Queensland Government to review and assess potential health risks in advance of publication of the Detailed Site Investigation by Airservices Australia
Queensland Health advises the public not to consume fish and seafood caught from Coolangatta Creek and the stormwater system near Gold Coast Airport as a precaution following testing for PFAS
PFAS was detected in fish and water from the creek during an Airservices Australia PFAS investigation in 2024
The test results showed elevated levels of PFAS and consequently
possible health risks for people who eat fish caught from this area frequently over a long period of time
There is no significant health risk for people who have infrequently eaten fish (every few months or less) from this creek
Areas of the creek covered by this advice are shown in this map of the area
Test results of surface water showed levels of PFAS complied with the National Health and Medical Research Council’s guideline values for recreational water use in Coolangatta Creek and the stormwater system near the Gold Coast Airport
and the stormwater discharge near the shoreline at Kirra Beach
swimming and wading is not recommended in these areas of Coolangatta Creek and the stormwater system
and where the stormwater drains onto Kirra Beach
This is because the water may contain other pollutants
that make it unsuitable for these activities
This recommendation does not apply to the ocean at Kirra Beach and North Kirra Beach
The Queensland Government completed initial preliminary testing of groundwater in the vicinity of Golden Four Drive near the Gold Coast (Coolangatta) Airport in 2017
The sampling was carried out following a report by a member of the public indicating that PFAS may be present in groundwater at that location
While Airservices Australia is conducting an investigation into the extent of contamination caused by the historic use of PFAS firefighting foam at the Gold Coast (Coolangatta) Airport
the government commenced this sampling after confirming that the location reported is beyond the area covered by the current Airservices investigation
The results of the preliminary tests suggest that two of the locations tested recorded PFAS levels that are above the national drinking water guidelines
but below the recreational water use guidelines
Residents are reminded that bore water in urban environments can carry any number of contaminants and should not be used for recreation or consumption unless it has been tested and known to be completely safe
The Queensland Government will continue working with Airservices Australia and the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development to determine what further action is needed

The Sydney rockers will take the stage alongside Radium Dolls, Thirst Trap, and more.
May is about to get a bit madder, with The Coolangatta Hotel announcing Sydney rock band C.O.F.F.I.N to headline their Mayday Madness event.
Taking place on Saturday, May 3 - coinciding with the beginning of the World Surf League weekend - Mayday Madness is set to be “pure surf-punk-rock chaos”. According to a press release, the event “isn’t just another gig - it’s a full-throttle, high-energy, barrel wrapped celebration of surf, creativity, music, and mateship.”
Joining C.O.F.F.I.N will be Brisbane rockers Radium Dolls, Northern Rivers’ indie-rock-fusion artists Thirst Trap, and Byron’s indie-punk outfit Off Judy.
Presented by 88 Productions and Coastals Hard Coco Water, the event will be sure to have alcoholic coconut water (and regular bevvies) flowing all night.

C.O.F.F.I.N are not to be missed live. In a 2024 review for The Music, Guido Farnell wrote about their “short but heavy set of tough-as-nails hard rock” at Melbourne’s The Forum.
“Musically, these guys are as hard as it gets, but screams of ‘always was, always will be’ and ‘fuck colonisation’ in between songs suggest hearts of gold driving the proceedings. They have that distinctive eighties Aussie pub rock vibe about them, which feels nostalgic. Essentially a boozy party band, tossing back a V.B. to the sounds of C.O.F.F.I.N feels alright.”

Michael Sim says he “feels some good vibes” every time he comes to the Coolangatta-Tweed Heads Golf Club and he added to them with a course record round today
A 9-under-par 63 on the West Course gave the Gold Coast-based 39-year-old a two-shot win in the Love Golf Fitting & Coaching Studio Coolangatta and Tweed Heads Golf Club Pro-Am
It was a repeat of his victory in 2021 when he shot a 7-under-par 65 and if you look deeper into Sim’s career wins you’ll find a Greg Norman Junior Classic triumph at the NSW/Queensland border club
Sim plays competition golf infrequently these days
spending more time coaching at Lakelands Golf Club
which beat Brad McIntosh’s previous course record of 64 may encourage more regular outings
continued his fine form in the adidas PGA Pro-Am Series to finish second at Coolangatta and Tweed Heads
His 65 was six shots better than the next best score in the morning groups
Crawford played the five par-5s in a combined 5-under-par
playing alongside host professional Jared Love
Sim quickly moved to -2 with birdies on the 12th and 14th and surged to -5 with three straight birdies around the turn
He eventually caught Crawford with a three on the long par-4 fifth hole and moved clear with birdies on the seventh and ninth
Michael Sim: “I got it going early and was 4-under with four par-5s still to play
A strength of mine is driving accuracy and iron play and it’s suited here
You don’t have to be too long on both Coolangatta-Tweed courses
There’s a lot of doglegs and the par-5s are all reachable
“I’m still a bit undecided with what my future holds with tournament play but days like this maybe makes the decision a little easier.”
The adidas PGA Pro-Am Series returns to Brisbane for the Austbrokers Comsure Charity Day at The Brisbane Golf Club on Monday followed by the Lion Richlands McLeod Pro-Am at McLeod Country Golf Club on Wednesday

State of Origin allegiances could come into play for a boutique Gold Coast tower proposal
Earmarked for a 1010sq m sloping site at 27 Dixon Street
Coolangatta—opposite Goodwin Park—the proposed development sits just inside Maroon territory
But with the state border running down the middle of the road
the domain of the Blues is virtually on its doorstep
the development would rise eight storeys and comprise 16 mostly three-bedroom apartments
The proposal has been lodged by a Sydney-based builder-developer entity
The scheme envisioned by Impact Design features an organic form with soft curves and large cantilevered balconies
“The proposal is a contemporary and architecturally refined multi-residential building designed to integrate seamlessly with its surrounding environment,” a planning report by Elevate Development Solutions said
“The built form is characterised by a modern
reflecting a harmonious relationship with the streetscape on one side and the lush park frontage on the other
“This dual-height configuration not only respects the existing urban context but also enhances the connection between the development and its natural surroundings.”
According to a submitted architectural vision statement
and materials that echo the surrounding environment
“This approach enhances the building’s connection to Goodwin Park while distinguishing it from neighbouring developments,” it said
“By thoughtfully engaging with its unique location and leveraging its proximity to Goodwin Park
A roof terrace would provide landscaped communal open space “extending the building’s engagement with its green context”
“This design achieves a balance between a bold architectural statement and a development that is deeply immersed in its environmental and community setting
offering a model for sophisticated urban living,” it said
Parking for 37 vehicles is to be provided across three basement levels partially embedded into the sloping site
If approved by the Gold Coast City Council
the development would replace two single-storey houses
Brisbane’s Indooroopilly and the Gold Coast’s Coolangatta have appeared in the top 10 list for unit sales across Queensland for the very first time
Indooroopilly, in Brisbane’s western suburbs
InfoTrack’s Head of Property, Australia, Lee Bailie, said the established area is just eight kilometres from the Brisbane CBD and offers great buyer appeal
“Indooroopilly has seen a jump in medium-density apartments in recent years as buyers flock to this convenient location or downsize from the many large houses in the area,” Bailie said
“It’s also home to the largest shopping centre in Brisbane’s western suburbs, Indooroopilly Shopping Centre
which offers access to a great array of retail stores
Also to make the top 10 list for unit sales for the first time was the Gold Coast suburb of Coolangatta. After last appearing in the top 10 list a year ago (in Q3 2023), Broadbeach made its first appearance for 2024
The result confirms the strong attraction of the Gold Coast, with Surfers Paradise number one on the list for unit sales once again
a position it’s held for more than two years
Also to rank highly for unit sales was Brisbane City in second place, followed by Maroochydore in third
with the booming Sunshine Coast suburb up from sixth place last quarter
InfoTrack’s report showed for house sales, the Gold Coast suburb of Pimpama topped the list
coming in at number one for the very first time
“Pimpama has been steadily growing in popularity over the past 12 months and is up from fourth spot last quarter
to now be sitting in top spot,” Bailie said
“Its equal distance to the heart of the Gold Coast and the Brisbane CBD makes it a very attractive commuter suburb
and a new train station is also under construction
Nearby Upper Coomera came in at number seven on the list.
The InfoTrack figures show houses have retained their position as the most popular property type in Queensland with a share of just over 60 per cent. Strata units had a 27.43 per cent share.

Five years after falling just seven seconds short of victory in the iconic long course
a dominant and thoroughly professional performance from Newport SLSC’s Jemma Smith has helped her to claim her maiden Coolangatta Gold title
There was a matter of metres between Smith and eventual champion
after Rogers successfully came from behind to pass the NSW athlete on the final run leg
A highly focussed Smith never looked like having history repeat this time around, powering ahead in the opening ski leg and never looking back as she worked her way to a comfortable and composed title on Sunday 13 October
Josh Minogue said she is the first NSW-trained athlete to win the legendary race
see that [finish] banner and be able to take it,” Jemma said
I knew that if I got too caught up with where everyone was
I just really pushed the pace as much as I could
right up until literally the last couple of metres was something I was really proud of
but it definitely lit the fire in me to come back one day.”
Newport’s Jackson Borg put together a fantastic race to finish in third place while former Warilla Barrack Point SLSC athlete and surf sports legend
Ali Day claimed his 10th title from 10 starts with a remarkable sub-four hour effort across the 41.8km course
His run to the finish line included embracing family and friends along the esplanade and even carrying his kids for a stretch
and Day later confirmed this would be his last Coolangatta Gold
“Ali has been such a source of inspiration for me
not only the athletic feats that he’s been able to set the bar so high
But the incredible person that he is and a role model
That’s something that I really try to emulate and take a lot away from,” Jemma said
“To be able to stand atop of the podium today
It’s so special to be able to do this alongside an amazing human being.”
“I dreamt of this moment when I got to nine
and I think that’s my best one yet to be honest
I don’t think it will ever fully sink in,” Day said
“I hope there’s a kid out there now watching me that can walk away and say they are going to do the race next year
The Coolangatta Gold celebrated 40 years in 2024 and encompassed two days of racing across the long and short courses

The beachfront estate known as Rolling Seas
Surf legend Mick Fanning has scored $16.05m for his beachfront dream home in a pre-auction wipeout deal setting a new benchmark for the southern Gold Coast
The three-time world champion’s Bilinga property was snapped up by a local family a week before it was scheduled to go under the hammer
becoming the most expensive residential home sold between Coolangatta and Currumbin
said the mega deal was inked the night before the holiday weekend amid heated interest from multiple parties
Fanning and partner Breanna Randall on the beachfront entertaining deck
Mr Dowker said the trophy home on a 1,030 sqm lot fronting the sand at 291 Golden Four Dr had attracted 126 inquiries and 28 private inspections since hitting the market last month
including a high volume of interest from overseas
“We had inquiries from all corners of the world including Europe
“It was the most international inquiry I’ve ever had on a property
and it really ignited a curiosity on living on the beach on this stretch of the coast that I hadn’t seen before.”
The home was designed for relaxed coastal living
who grew up in nearby Coolangatta and built his career carving the areas’s renowned breaks
building the three-storey residence three years later
the rustic Hamptons-inspired estate had been a family home for Fanning and his partner
before it was later converted into high-end holiday rental accommodation
“Sometimes you walk into a house and feel like you can’t touch anything,” Fanning said
“I wanted people to walk in and feel at home
especially when you go up the stairs and see that view.”
The property includes a five-bedroom residence and separate self-contained double-storey cottage
The property has seven bedrooms and five bathrooms
with features including a large entertaining deck with a pool
There’s also a separate two-storey guest cottage with exposed brickwork and copper pipes
Mr Dowker did not disclose the buyer’s identity
but said the property would become their family home
Fanning is a celebrated surf champion who grew up carving the local Gold Coast breaks
“We had a hot buyer on the hook who had the desire and the appetite to acquire the property prior to auction
and the sale was squared away late in the day before the Easter Long Weekend,” he said
“I’ve known the buyer for the best part of 10 years and having that good relationship with them gave the vendor added confidence
“The buyer had been looking on and off for a few years
waiting for the right opportunity to transact.”
It was the family home before being converted as luxury holiday rental accommodation
‘Crowd-funded’ home snapped up sight-unseen
Australia’s ‘best house’ hits the market
New insight into Culture Kings’ $600m empire
Fanning owns several other Gold Coast properties
and sold a designer Tugun house with an indoor for skate ramp for $3.3m in November 2024 as he streamlines his portfolio
