A man has left a trail of destruction outside a school at Cromer
multiple Triple Zero (000) calls were made to emergency services following a single vehicle collision outside Cromer Public School at Carcoola Road
a white 2011 BMW X5 SUV (main image) was driving north along Carcoola Road
when the 22-year-old male driver is understood to have experienced a medical episode
It is believed the vehicle gained speed as it first hit a 2010 Toyota Estima people mover
which was parked on the same side of the road as the public primary school
The BMW has then been deflected away from the school towards the other side of the road
where it has gone on to cause significant property damage
The out of control car has flattened the metal signs at the pedestrian crossing
before mounting the kerb opposite the school
It then ploughed through the front brick walls of two residential houses
The force of the impact ripped off the front passenger door of the BMW
Students were in the playground at the time
seeing the collision unfold and watching as the car came to a stop metres from the school fence
Some had rushed over to the fence for a look and were told to stand back by one of the bystanders
he was given initial treatment by someone proficient in first aid and helped to the side of the road
He did not appear to have any recollection of the incident
The young man was assessed by two NSW Ambulance crews
He appeared not to have suffered any significant injury as a result of the collision
but was taken to Northern Beaches Hospital for further assessment
Firefighters from Forestville Station established an exclusion zone around the damaged power pole and called for Ausgrid to conduct a repair
They also cleared debris from the road and neutralised oil and fluid spills from the heavily damaged vehicle using absorbent material
Officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command closed Carcoola Road until the vehicle could be towed just before 1.00pm
and were seen conducting inquiries into the incident

A woman was arrested after an alleged hit-and-run collision with two kids in the car
Just after 8.30am yesterday morning (Wednesday
NSW Police were called to a report of an alleged hit-and-run collision at Windarra Place
it is understood that officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command could not find the vehicle allegedly involved in the collision
but were able to follow a trail of debris and fluids to Orlando Road
There they found a silver 2019 Toyota Kluger with a heavily damaged front passenger side (main image)
a woman in her 30s with a young child in the vehicle
Apparently the woman had driven to Orlando Road to drop a second child off at a school holiday program being held at one of the local businesses
An observer noted the younger child removed from the vehicle by police and also taken to the business
Police were seen speaking with the female driver
who at one point became visibly agitated with officers
It is understood the woman was being informed that she was being arrested for allegedly leaving the scene of an accident
Police were then observed taking the woman into custody and it is believed she was taken to Dee Why Police Station
A man understood to be the father of the children was later seen arriving at the scene
where he secured the damaged vehicle and collected the children
The vehicle was towed from Orlando Road later in the day
drivers without reasonable medical exemptions are legally obliged to undertake tests for intoxication when directed by police
The penalty for refusing a sample when asked by police defaults to a high range offence having been committed
This includes licence suspension and a fine of up to $3,300

A moped rider was trapped under a car in a crash at Cromer
Just after 5.45am yesterday morning (Thursday
emergency services were called to a report of a collision between a car and motorcycle at the intersection of Fisher Road North and Lynwood Avenue
A local resident who witnessed the collision said a man was riding the Piaggio moped southbound on Fisher Road North when an SUV driven by a young woman turned out of Lynwood Avenue
The witness said the moped was then dragged along the ground by the car
with the male rider ending up under the front of the vehicle
The female driver immediately called Triple Zero (000) to report the collision and the trapped motorcycle rider
Based on the initial reports from the scene confirming the 34-year-old motorcycle rider was trapped under the vehicle following the collision
multiple emergency services crews responded to Fisher Road North
Fire and Rescue NSW Dee Why and Narrabeen Stations
and three NSW Ambulance crews including Intensive Care Paramedics from Narrabeen Station and NSW Ambulance Inspector Mark Whittaker
The Toll NSW Ambulance Rescue Helicopter was also tasked to the scene from Bankstown with a specialist trauma team
with his motorcycle helmet firmly wedged between the vehicle and the road
preventing police officers and paramedics from accessing him or fully assessing his injuries
It appeared on first inspection however he had a broken ankle
visible because his leg was sticking out from under the car
Firefighters were on scene within ten minutes of the first call
using hydraulic lifting equipment to jack up the vehicle and allow the man to be pulled free
Able to now see the extent of the motorcycle rider’s injuries
relieved paramedics found that although he had been pinned under the car and his helmet had been wedged
it had done its job and fully protected his head
The man was taken to the Intensive Care ambulance
and was complaining of some rib and neck pain
but was otherwise able to move his limbs and did not initially appear to have any critical abdominal
Paramedics nonetheless took precautions for possible internal or spinal injuries before taking the 34-year-old man to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition just before 6.30am
Fisher Road North was closed in both directions by NSW Police for the duration of the incident
reopening just after the ambulance departure

Residents at Cromer are furious after Northern Beaches Council delivered a different project to the one they promised
Works are currently underway at South Creek Road
to improve traffic safety by building two roundabouts in close proximity
As part of the works community consultation was undertaken
indicating the upgrade of an existing pedestrian crossing and minor alignment changes to the intersection of Grover Avenue and Fisher Road North
As of last Wednesday (26 February) the concept plan shown to the community, which received 83 percent community satisfaction, remained as the only plan on display at Northern Beaches Council’s Your Say website
Grover Avenue runs adjacent to the popular sportsground at St Matthews Farm Reserve
and is heavily used during the winter months for sport
with up to 400 vehicle movements an hour according to local residents
Access to the road previously was one lane inbound with two informal outbound lanes
a right and left hand turn onto Fisher Road
The plan consulted on by Council suggested the two informal outbound lanes may be consolidated into a single outbound lane for pedestrian safety
When construction began at the end of Grover Avenue a couple of weeks ago however
residents were surprised to find the road realignment restricting the entry point to Grover Avenue to a single lane
cars must stop and allow passage of vehicles one at a time through the narrowed opening in contra flow
Residents said this will prove to be a nightmare
not only for them but for the hundreds of parents trying to get their children to sports events
They also claimed it will cause traffic delays on Fisher Road North as vehicles queue to turn into Grover Avenue
A community meeting was held on-site on Tuesday evening (25 February) with Narrabeen Ward Councillors Ruth Robins and Vincent De Luca OAM (image above
along with Council staff responsible for the roadworks
Cr De Luca later told Radio 2GB it was not the first time Council had ‘stuffed up’ on infrastructure delivery
“Council staff have admitted that they failed to actually consult the community on changes to the design
What Council has put there has actually made it more dangerous than before
“This isn’t the first time that we have had yet another stuff-up when it comes to infrastructure
there was works done on the Manly beachfront using State Government money,” said Cr De Luca
“All those works had to be ripped up and redone because they were deemed a safety issue
I’m still awaiting a response on whether Council had to pay to do the ripping up and the remedial works
“We also have problems with roadworks in Curl Curl and Freshwater
where hundreds of residents complained and objected to it
Council went ahead,” said Cr De Luca
Residents at Grover Avenue said they were generally satisfied with the works at the Middleton Road and South Creek Road intersections
they demanded answers on why the plan that was being implemented at Grover Avenue bore no resemblance to the plan they were shown
Northern Beaches Council Director of Transport and Assets Campbell Pfeiffer apologised for Council’s failure to inform the community of the change
“Council staff are not motivated by any other intention than to improve safety
“We went through a consultation process that talked about the design and then we went through and did a further road risk assessment
but we forgot to come back and talk to you
We apologise for that,” Mr Pfeiffer told the assembled residents
Responding to rapid-fire questions from the residents
Mr Pfeiffer said the revision to the plan had been made last November
He committed to halting the works at the end of Grover Avenue
pending a review of three options that would be put to the community with two weeks to comment
Resident representative Nikki Alexander (image above) said that the revised plan was unacceptable
“Is it possible to resume with what was consulted on and scale back the works at the end of Grover Avenue
“We’d all like to commend you on the two roundabouts [on South Creek Road]
“We were consulted on a plan that hasn’t been delivered here
We need to scale back so we have the entrance and egress we have always had,” responded Ms Alexander
Residents also challenged assertions of improved safety
with many saying there had never been a safety concern at the intersection
one local woman said she narrowly avoided a head-on collision that day
“I have lived here for 25-years and today I nearly had a head-on accident coming home from Coles at 2.00pm because when I turned into the street
there was a car coming at me,” said the woman
Observing the narrowed entry in fairly light traffic on Tuesday evening
the Northern Beaches Advocate noted two potential collisions due to vehicles contending for the restricted access
One of Council’s traffic engineers told residents they had listened to their concerns and would find alternatives
“Last week when we met you we listened to your concerns
We agreed we would go away and come back with options to discuss
Your concerns are the same and we understand that
“The traffic engineers have come up with a couple of interim solutions to try and improve the right-hand and left-hand access out of the road
There are three options but it’s hard to show you [now],” he said
Seeking to align resident expectations to those of staff
Cr De Luca restated Council’s commitment to pause the works at the end of Grover Avenue pending revised designs
which Mr Pfeiffer said would be made available to residents ‘within the next day or so’
Council released three redesigned options for the entrance to Grover Avenue for community consultation
Resident representative Nikki Alexander acknowledged Council’s revisions
but said they did not demonstrate Council was listening to the community
“Residents don’t feel like we’ve been listened to unfortunately
We were really hoping to see something more closely aligned with the concept plan we were originally presented by Council,” said Ms Alexander
All options restore two lanes, so traffic will be able to enter and exit Grover Avenue at the same time. As promised by Mr Pfeiffer, consultation on the three options has been set to an accelerated timeframe and will close on Friday

A bus has plunged through a guardrail into bush next to a retirement village at Cromer
came out to investigate after hearing a loud crashing sound
A resident told the Northern Beaches Advocate that she saw the large bus crashed through a guardrail of a turning circle next to the Maybrook Retirement Village
who was ‘stunned’ and remained in the bus
which had come to a stop against the embankment
the driver remained in the vehicle unable to say what had happened
but he was able to get out of the bus and move out of the bushes to the side of the road
NSW Police and firefighters from Dee Why and Narrabeen Stations arrived shortly afterwards
along with NSW Ambulance Inspector Christian Holmes
The bus driver insisted he was not physically harmed and declined ambulance assessment
A response vehicle also arrived from bus operator Keolis Downer to survey the situation and make an assessment of how to remove the vehicle from its position down the embankment
Tow trucks that had arrived on scene departed when it became apparent they would be unable to remove the bus from where it had become wedged
With the bus firmly stuck and not at risk of moving further downhill into bushland
firefighters began cutting away sections of the guardrail and support posts
which would prevent the bus being pulled back onto the road by a heavy tow vehicle
A senior manager from Keolis Downer was arriving home from a night out only a few doors down
He walked up the street to see what the commotion was
to find one of his vehicles and employees at the centre of the precarious situation
After checking on the welfare of the driver
who handed over responsibility for recovery of the bus to Keolis Downer
and shortly after 11.00pm he settled in for an expected two-hour wait
No passengers were on the bus at the time of the incident
The cause of the crash remains unknown at this stage

A hazard reduction burn at Oxford Falls jumped containment lines
threatening homes at Cromer and Beacon Hill
Shortly before 10.00am yesterday morning (Saturday
NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) crews conducted a planned hazard reduction burn of 25 hectares (25ha) between Oxford Falls Road and Meatworks Avenue
Initial fire behaviour was as expected with flame heights of around one metre (1m)
but early signs of trouble began as wind speeds started to pick up around 11.00am
with wind gusts of up to 26 km/h and small spot fires detected outside the planned burn area
any spot fires represented a potentially significant risk for the fire escaping containment lines
With their visibility obscured by smoke from the burn
firefighters on the ground requested the assistance of a Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) drone to scan for any fires outside the expected burn area
locating a spot fire burning on the eastern side of the fire trail
Firefighters on the ground were dispatched to the location to investigate and extinguish the fire
With reports from the FRNSW drone indicating there were actually two large spot fires that were growing in size
the hazard reduction was formally declared a bushfire
were called for and the drone was recalled and grounded as helicopters were tasked
Additional RFS and FRNSW crews were also mobilised. Fortunately, local RFS Stations had been hosting Get Ready Weekend activities at nearby Belrose and Terrey Hills Stations
Kids and parents who had come to the stations got to see the excitement of a real response
but unfortunately had their day cut short as crews responded
including the crews already deployed for the hazard reduction
fifteen RFS crews were tasked to the fireground including Northern Beaches Headquarters
RFS crews already deployed for the hazard reduction at Red Hill Reserve fought to re-establish containment
but found themselves outmatched by the fire as increasing wind speeds fanned the flames and pushed eastwards towards Cromer and Beacon Hill
A helicopter arrived overhead just after 1.00pm
confirming fears that the fire had pushed 300-400m east of containment lines
Difficult terrain put the escaped fire out of the reach of firefighters on the ground
and a second firefighting helicopter was requested
The area has a number of aged care facilities adjacent to bushland
RFS Group Officer and former FRNSW Commissioner Greg Mullins AO AFSM (image above
right) used his extensive local knowledge and understanding of fire behaviour to predict the fire path
There he established a command point where he was joined by FRNSW Inspector Mark McKay and combined RFS and FRNSW crews who set up a defensive perimeter around Levande Maybrook
Officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command were asked to close access to Maybrook Avenue as a number of people came to investigate and began to impair access for emergency service vehicles
Some family members were seen coming to collect elderly relatives from the retirement facility
but just after 2.15pm an emergency order was issued by the NSW RFS declaring it too late to leave and for residents to shelter in place
Waterbombing helicopters focused their efforts on the northern edge of the fire as it approached Pinduro Place and Maybrook Avenue
and their efforts proved successful at largely keeping the fire to the south of a creek line in the gully
The fire was seen to be burning fiercely through bush on the southern side of the gully
and waterbombing efforts soon switched to that side to reduce flame intensity
By 4.00pm the immediate threat to Maybrook Avenue had passed
and the focus switched to forecast fire impact on properties at Little Willandra Road and Willandra Road
including the Willandra Bungalows Retirement Village
Police closed Willandra Road between Lady Penrhyn Drive and Little Willandra Road
the fire intensity began to drop and wind speeds eased
reducing the NSW RFS fire warning level to ‘Watch and Act — Be aware of ember attack’ shortly after 4.00pm
and then to ‘Advice — Monitor Conditions’ by 5.30pm
The fire which had burned through 80ha was still making its way steadily eastwards however
and was seen cresting the ridge above Willandra Bungalows just before 5.00pm
Police were called to Lady Penrhyn Drive shortly before 5.30pm after an unauthorised drone was reported flying within the fireground
potentially endangering aerial firefighting assets
Fire reached close to Beacon Hill Fire Station shortly after 6.00pm
and was around 50m from properties at Little Willandra Road by 6.15pm
although flame height by this time had reduced to 2-3m
Properties in the area were warned to prepare for ember attack as winds continued to push fire and smoke eastwards
Firefighters were confident however that they would be able to defend properties along Willandra Road and Little Willandra Road
Tactical backburning operations were undertaken to starve the oncoming fuel of fire in the area around Lady Penrhyn Drive
although at points the fire came close to homes
firefighters reported risk to the Willandra Bungalows from ember attack
but by 7.30pm firefighters in that area reported that they were having success extinguishing the fire as it reached their defensive lines around properties
police were again called just after 9.30pm after firefighters reported a number of youths in the fireground around Little Willandra Road
with residents reporting fires approaching homes
After careful assessment of fire behaviour
another tactical backburn was put in place behind properties at Maybrook Avenue shortly before 11.00pm to prevent the fire crossing the creek line and coming up the hill through previously unburned bush
police were requested to investigate sightings of torch lights spotted along a fire trail off Maybrook Avenue
where no firefighting activity was underway
After overnight RFS relief crews arrived around 9.00pm and progressively took over firefighting activity
the RFS crews who had been at work all day were brought out of the fireground and sent home
FRNSW crews were all stood down just after midnight
with RFS crews continuing to fight the fire through the night
With the fire area now estimated to be 107ha in size
it is expected the firefighting activity will continue well into today
The RFS advise if you have a respiratory condition and may be affected by smoke
such as staying indoors and closing windows
Monitor weather conditions and weather warnings at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and for information on road closures and traffic conditions, check the Live Traffic NSW website
so consider what activities you resume and where you park vehicles

The driver of a ute that crashed and rolled at Cromer has been charged with drink driving
Just before 1.15am yesterday morning (Saturday
emergency services responded to a report of a utility vehicle rolled over at Fisher Road North
NSW Ambulance and firefighters from Dee Why Station arrived on scene
they found two young men in their 20s climbing out of the badly damaged black 2007 Toyota Hilux utility after it had come to rest on the grass verge following a rollover
The roof of the cabin had collapsed on the driver side
and the undercarriage of the vehicle sustained extensive damage
The rear passenger wheel had been snapped off and was lodged under the vehicle
and the front passenger wheel was also broken off the axle
They were offered assessment by NSW Ambulance paramedics
but with no evident fuel leaking and the vehicle off the road embedded into the dirt
there was no further action for them to take
Assessing the crash scene and a number of empty drink containers thrown from the vehicle
officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command subjected the 22-year-old male driver to a roadside breath test
which allegedly returned a positive result
He was then placed under arrest and taken to Dee Why Police Station where he underwent a breath analysis

erupting into a large bushfire that prompted NSW Rural Fire Service to issue an emergency alert warning residents it was too late to leave
Residents of Cromer Heights in Sydney’s northern beaches received a terrifying warning on Saturday
with authorities advising it was too late to leave after a controlled hazard reduction burn grew into a large bushfire around lunchtime.
The large bushfire threatened the lives and homes of residents in Pinduro Place
Residents in the area were urged to seek shelter in a solid structure such as a house and prepare to protect themselves if the fire approached
but were advised it was too late to evacuate.
The blaze grew to 80 hectares in size by 4pm.

"People in the areas of Narraweena and Cromer should prepare for ember attack
“Firefighters and waterbombing aircraft are working in the area to slow the spread of the fire.”
NSW Fire Rescue issued an alert at 1.40pm urging those at the Maybrook Retirement Village to prepare to leave
with the blaze moving in an easterly direction towards Maybrook Avenue
Disruptions for commuters in the area are expected with Willandra Road closed between McIntosh Road and Little Willandra Road
The emergency alert was down grounded to a Watch and Act at 4.27pm with the fierce fire easing in the late afternoon.

Retirement village residents on Sydney’s northern beaches sheltered inside as a nearby hazard reduction burn turned into a large
out-of-control bushfire which threatened homes before it was downgraded
The NSW Rural Fire Service issued an emergency warning at 2.39pm on Saturday in relation to the blaze on Meatworks Avenue at Oxford Falls
The warning focused on the Cromer Heights area
with residents on certain streets told it was “too late to leave”
the fire had been downgraded to “watch and act” level
the RFS said the fire had reached 100 hectares in size
“Conditions across the fire ground have begun to ease as wind speed and temperature decrease,” the RFS said on Saturday night
are conducting backburning operations overnight behind properties in the vicinity of Lady Penrhyn Drive
These operations will result in increased smoke in the Oxford Falls and Cromer Heights areas.”

Willandra Road was to remain closed between McIntosh Road and Little Willandra Road
Footage and photographs of the blaze show an enormous cloud of smoke over the area
At Levande Maybrook retirement village on Jersey Place in Cromer
which is home to more than 100 people across three buildings surrounded by bushland
“When the warning came … it was too late to leave,” Levande spokesman Dean Felton told the Herald
He said the facility was well-prepared and enacted its bushfire management plan
Residents either stayed in their units with the doors and windows closed
or gathered at the community centre in the middle of the site
Felton said they were told onsite later on Saturday that the “worst of it had passed”
Flames still flickered behind Australian Unity’s Willandra retirement village and bungalows as night fell
RFS media spokesman Inspector Ben Shepherd said the fire was burning towards the Cromer Heights and Beacon Hill area
“making its way basically under north-westerly winds in a south-easterly direction to Willandra Road”
Shepherd said hundreds of firefighters were sent to battle the blaze with assistance from water-bombing aircraft
He confirmed it was a hazard reduction burn that “spotted across lines”
Locals flooded social media with images of the fire
One woman urged those driving to look at the blaze to keep the roads clear for firefighters
Another person said there had been a “constant stream of tourists coming up Lady Penrhyn Drive all afternoon to view the fire”
A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said they were supporting the RFS with nine trucks in attendance and crews focused on property protection
the RFS encouraged residents across the state to dedicate this weekend to preparing for bushfire season
Emergency services minister Jihad Dib acknowledged hot and dry conditions were anticipated in summer
“After several years of rainfall and flooding the vegetation has grown quickly and that is now drying out with the warmer weather
RFS Commissioner Rob Rogers on Wednesday said volunteers had responded to more than 1100 bush and grass fires since the start of July
A total fire ban was declared across Sydney on Thursday
Firefighters were tested last month when a grass fire threatened homes near Liverpool in Sydney’s south-west

Identical twins, Nathan (left) and Jason (right) Cromer are CRNAs with the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology.
the identical twin bond has always been strong and although they never planned to follow the same path through life
Jason said it happened more often than not
“We have always strived to be successful in life
we just didn’t know it was going to be in health care.”
Born just eight minutes apart in Des Moines
the twins spent their childhood inseparable
with one shared goal: playing professional baseball
their careers in health care have aligned after Jason
joined the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology in October
“Baseball was life; we had no other plan,” Nathan recalled
‘What if baseball doesn’t work out?’ and I’d say
‘What do you mean if?’” Baseball did work out — both brothers were drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays straight out of high school in 1999
Nathan was the first to pivot to health care
starting his nursing career in Florida before advancing to become a certified registered nurse anesthetist
“I’d had four elbow surgeries during my baseball career
and anesthesia always fascinated me,” he said
“When I realized I could have a positive impact on patients during surgeries
Jason followed in his brother’s footsteps a little later
“I love the complexity of cases,” Jason said
The Cromers occasionally overlap in the operating room
“Seeing my brother doing the same thing as me does put a smile on my face,” Nathan said
Being identical twins has come with its quirks
“It’s tough for people to tell us apart in the OR,” Nathan said
have the same mannerisms and even look the same in scrubs
Though their lives mirror each other in many ways
“Jason has a mole on his wrist and nose — that’s about it,” Nathan says with a grin
jokes that Nathan still holds those eight minutes over his head
Allison – also a CRNA with the department of anesthesiology – are raising three children
but we wouldn’t have it any other way,” Jason says
The Cromer twins are more than colleagues and siblings — they’re each other’s biggest supporters
They credit their baseball careers for instilling the discipline and resilience that prepared them for health care
they take pride in providing comfort to patients during some of their most vulnerable moments
“The best part of being a CRNA,” Nathan says
“is seeing a patient smile or give a thumbs up after surgery
or “arguing like teenagers,” the Cromer twins continue to share a bond as strong as ever
“We’ve become even closer over the years,” Nathan said
“Life took us on a journey we never expected — but it’s been an amazing ride.”

US ultra-low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines has named Fred Cromer as its chief financial officer
tasking him with helping the company chart a profitable course forward.
Cromer will start his new position on 8 July
working closely with interim CFO Brian McMenamy
who will remain with Spirit in a “senior finance role” to assist with the transition.
”Cromer brings three decades of experience in the aviation industry
treasury and operations,” Spirit said on 1 July.
Spirit has tapped Fred Cromer to guide its financial decision-making amid a difficult season for discount airlines in the USA
His background includes stints as chief financial officer of now-defunct regional carrier ExpressJet Airlines
president of Bombardier Commercial Aircraft and chief executive of Xwing
Notably, Xwing – a California Bay Area company focused on developing autonomous aviation technology – was recently acquired by air taxi developer Joby Aviation.
“Fred’s extensive career in aviation and his proven track record of strategic financial leadership across all aspects of the industry bring valuable insights and expertise that will help us successfully evolve our business model as we navigate the changes in the demand environment,” says Spirit CEO Ted Christie.
Cromer’s appointment comes less less than a month after McMenamy was named as Spirit’s interim CFO, following the resignation of Scott Haralson
Haralson left Spirit pursue another opportunity at “a larger
publicly traded company outside of the airline industry”
according to a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission
He now works as CFO of rental car company Hertz
Spirit lost $143 million in the first quarter of 2024 amid heightened competitive pressures that prompted the airline to shrink its operation and seek out cost savings
It is tweaking its business model following a failed tie-up with JetBlue Airways and is also struggling with the grounding of double-digit numbers of Airbus A320neo-family jets due to Pratt & Whitney engine issues.
Last month, Spirit announced it had increased the maximum weight for checked bags
another sign of it moving away from its historical no-frills model since it axed add-on fees for changing or cancelling flights.
Spirit also disclosed on 1 July the appointment of Dana Shapir Alviene as senior vice-president of inflight and airport experience
The ULCC also moved longtime executive Tomas Ranaldi into the role of vice-president of financial planning and analysis.

Pam Cromer
once received some very valuable advice from her grandmother – “Education is something no one can take away from you.” With the guidance and support of her foster family
becoming the first college graduate of her biological family
The daughter of her foster family introduced her to the world of nursing and the possibility of working in a hospital to support herself after graduating from a two-year program
Cromer’s journey with MCG and Augusta University has been what she calls “totally exhilarating,” opening unparalleled opportunity for her professional success and rise to the rank of professor
along with the many networks she has developed through her faculty role as director of Costa Layman International Outreach and Community Engagement over the past 19 years
“It is with pride and honor that I consistently represent the College of Nursing and the university in its efforts for sustained rural outreach partnerships that engage community leaders in the sharing of resources and preparations for our future health care workforce to provide health care access and exposure to the realities of health care
This strong support of a shared vision for “community” has promoted exponential growth of service-learning agreements that Cromer manages for the College of Nursing
involving interdisciplinary teams of faculty and students from all corners of the university in providing healthcare access and referral services to vulnerable populations
With a focus on rural health provider competencies
quality and access issues to health care delivery can be addressed by strong community partnerships and alliances
such as the long-term relationship with FQHC
who provides shared resources for student trainings and is a primary care service provider for Latino communities
These community partnerships and opportunities for service-learning for her nursing students was the catalyst to Cromer receiving the inaugural Excellence in Service-Learning Faculty Award
which lauds a faculty member who has made outstanding contributions in the areas of service learning and community-engaged work while working closely with a community partner to integrate community-engaged principles
practices and pedagogies into their courses and clinicals
“Receiving the 2024 Augusta University Excellence in Service-Learning Faculty Award is a humbling experience to me personally; knowing that Augusta University and CON recognized my work as so meaningful is especially gratifying,” Cromer said
“As a senior faculty member of the College of Nursing, I was appointed to the Augusta University Community Engagement Leadership Council in September 2023 and its advisory subcommittee task force
With a vested interest in community partnerships as a component of my education
research and service responsibilities since 2006
I have successfully and strategically expanded this focus to local
national and international stakeholder collaboratives aligned to the goals of community-engaged activities supportive of Augusta University’s mission and values
With a pedagogical philosophy supporting team-based
focused on the ‘Adult as a Learner,’ my efforts are centered on utilizing experts within disciplines to activate
motivate and cultivate enriched opportunities for learners and improved access and health care services for vulnerable populations within our communities.”
Cromer is far from done when it comes to improved access to health care services for the underserved in the community
