leading to extended departure delays throughout the afternoon
The storms follow a similar round of disruptions earlier this week, when the FAA issued temporary ground stops at both Dallas-area airports on Wednesday morning
with delays continuing into Thursday as severe weather lingered

In the 18th minute, Dallas midfielder Ramiro was called for a controversial foul on San Diego FC forward Alex Mighten in the box
Though Ramiro appeared to make negligible contact with Mighten
and Lozano converted the penalty kick in the 20th minute
There was no debate surrounding San Diego's next tally, as Dreyer found a streaking Lozano with a tremendous downfield pass in the 27th minute. Maarten Paes came out of his net to try to reduce the angle
but Lozano sidestepped the goalkeeper and deposited the shot into the Toros' net
Dreyer extended San Diego's lead in the 56th minute
with Lozano earning an assist for setting it up with a pass in the box
Both forwards received assists on Valakari's goal off the crossbar in the 73rd minute

Six candidates vied to represent District 8 with the departure of Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkins
District 8 includes Red Bird, Highland Hills, and Kleberg-Rylie. The winner would have significant influence on the city’s future
Atkins has represented the district for 16 of the past 18 years but has reached his term limit
Atkins is among four council members who did not or could not seek reelection this year
who has campaigned on continuing to focus on economic development
Blair has pointed to her experience in zoning and land use
promising to preserve neighborhood integrity
attract jobs and fight environmental injustice
She has cited her role while on the plan commission in pushing to stop incompatible industrial developments in areas like Floral Farms and updating the area’s land-use plans
who represented the district from 2015 to 2017
said he wants to “keep the momentum going.” His campaign platform includes expanding affordable housing
and supporting small businesses through grants and mentorship programs
a new political action committee called Revitalize Dallas sent out mailers in support of Wilson
The effort was funded by short-term homestay platform Airbnb
which had contributed $500,000 toward the effort
Airbnb has much at stake in an ongoing fight between the city and short-term rental operators
The city reignited a legal fight it lost earlier this year against ordinances that all but banned short-term rentals in single-family neighborhoods
longtime Highland Hills resident Subrina Lynn Brenham ran on a platform of economic diversification
She has emphasized her decades of community service and experience as a business owner and previously ran for City Council in 2013
along with Ruth Steward and first-time candidate Eugene Ralph
Peters has previously run for City Council. He also led an effort to recall Mayor Eric Johnson
Peters has called for more community engagement and youth initiatives in his campaign materials
transparency in city governance and protecting neighborhood residents from displacement
The new City Council will craft the next city budget and deal with new charter-mandated rules that require more funding for police-related initiatives
It will also have to address issues with rising property values and increasing park space
affordable housing and failing city infrastructure are also issues the City Council will need to address
The district is home to Paul Quinn College
along with agricultural and undeveloped land
the council member selected will oversee the sprawling area

How much do you think the Cowboys are going to regret not drafting a wide receiver
The Dallas Cowboys response to dropping out of the playoffs at 7-10 and third in the NFC East a year ago
after making the postseason as a 12-game winner the previous three seasons
For a team that was so fundamentally broken in the final year for head coach Mike McCarthy
one that left the team so unrecognizable from his past successes that many fans have a hard time remembering all McCarthy actually did accomplish on the football side of things over his tenure
this renewed focus on fundamentals has been praised at some turns
but criticized feverishly at others - mainly the hiring of offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to replace McCarthy as head coach
Schottenheimer’s first draft has cooled those waters considerably
The Cowboys front office has never wavered in wanting to use the draft as their main source of talent acquisition
Although this wasn’t expected to change under Schottenheimer at all
the team had to do more than sit on their hands and let players get away in free agency without signing new players themselves
and did so while also being active on the trade market
this was enough to go into the draft with a clearer focus on targeting the best players available
The Cowboys still showed preferences for the things their new head coach is seeking
like improved line of scrimmage play by spending the 12th overall pick on guard Tyler Booker and 44rd pick in the second round on defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku
They continued to target high character prospects from blue chip programs like Texas
and Oregon on day three with running back Jaydon Blue
This full commitment from picks 12 through 247 to create a deeper roster and strengthen positions with existing star power is what’s earned the Cowboys strong grades for their draft as of now
but the obvious position of need this strategy left unaddressed is guaranteed to remain a talking point from now all the way to Schottenheimer’s regular season debut in September
talking about the Cowboys not being good enough at the wide receiver position
because a lack of dynamic skill at WR has been an off-and-on problem for the Cowboys through multiple head coaches
Even with it being a position they’ve shown a willingness to step outside their perceived comfort zone and address with in-season trades
like for Amari Cooper in 2018 and Jonathan Mingo last year
the Cowboys are regularly behind the best of the best in the NFL when it comes to making enough big plays on the outside to truly contend in the postseason
like the unfortunately brief period where CeeDee Lamb
and Michael Gallup were all healthy and on the field together
but also some incredibly low valleys like Noah Brown
or more recently KaVontae Turpin being asked to play well beyond what their roles should be on offense
There are an endless number of reasons why one of the most common critiques of the Cowboys
specifically from inside the realm of opposing coaches and players they line up against
and play against in high leverage situations
A lack of firepower at wide receiver belongs near the top of this list though
adjacent to it is one thing the Cowboys are not only hoping to fix early on at the start of the Schottenheimer era
but perhaps the only thing that will sell the majority of the fanbase on Schottenheimer being a legitimate HC in the first place
Through all of the changes mentioned above in personnel and coaches
the Cowboys have had a major lack of creativity in their offensive play-calling and ability to scheme receivers open
They do not help quarterback Dak Prescott in the ways that other passers around the league
all of which currently make less than the Cowboys leader who became the highest paid at the position prior to week one a year ago
are lifted by play-calling that always seems to allow for easy completions and yards after the catch
The Cowboys making a basic 10 to 15 yard gain in the passing game last season
felt so incredibly laborious if not borderline miraculous
the bread and butter for other teams that reached the postseason was to rattle off these types of plays with ease by creating space for their skill players to run
For Cowboys fans still questioning what exactly Schottenheimer brings to the table
or comparing him to Jason Garrett who was often asked the same over his tenure
the best way for the new HC in Dallas to answer it is now staring America’s Team in the face
Coming out of the draft without a single pick spent on a new receiver was a major surprise
and tolerance for the predictable Jerry and Stephen Jones sell jobs that Mingo
Ryan Flournoy or Jalen Brooks can be a consistent WR2 to Lamb is understandably low
The time is unequivocally now for Dallas to uplift the talent they do have at receiver with schemes that bring them up to the more modern approaches to offense in today’s NFL
Any realistic discussion about how the Cowboys can actually get the most out of young players with untapped potential like Jalen Tolbert
or even their full-time punt/kick returner Turpin has to start with how the brain trust of Schottenheimer as play-caller and Klayton Adams as OC will help these players create separation and access to routes with their scheme
Schottenheimer’s initial glimpses into his vision for the offense
one the Cowboys front office clearly felt he wasn’t largely responsible for the collapse of while working under McCarthy as play-caller
have been nothing more than just a small step in the right direction
With the team spending it’s first three picks on OL
there is a noticeable lack of new faces or points of intrigue to really hone in on once Dallas begins offseason workouts
The time for more pressing questions about why WR wasn’t prioritized harder in the draft
and what the Cowboys are going to do about it
and will be the first real litmus test of how ready this team is to compete again until proven otherwise
The Cowboys wanting to install multiple options out of similar-looking formations to the defense and run the ball behind an offensive line built to excel out in space are all great goals to have
but so too is getting a receiver not named Lamb - who was banged up all of last season and missed the final two games - open on a regular basis
The average water cooler fan getting ready for a fantasy draft in a few months would have a hard time naming another Cowboys player that has this skill
There may even be a longshot case for fifth-round pick Jaydon Blue to already be one of the best separators in route running behind Lamb for the Cowboys
The Cowboys have both their play caller in Schottenheimer and quarterback in Prescott under contract for the next four seasons
The sense of urgency to win in this window should be heightened with Prescott coming off yet another season ending injury to start 2025
The fact that Prescott will get this “redo” of sorts to begin his new contract that carries a heavy burden of expectations with a HC also coming into the job already under fire may be a good thing
The general direction of the franchise at the time they decided to hire Schottenheimer was difficult to understand
despite being so financially committed to Prescott and needing a quick fix around him
The fear around the hire was that Schottenheimer
being an internal candidate elevated to HC
wouldn’t have enough of an influence to steer the team out of the dark waters of distractions and lack of player acquisition outside the draft to get things going in a positive direction again
it was seen as a near admittance from the Jones’ that winning football games is not of top priority in Dallas
The way they’ve collectively rolled up their sleeves to show a coherent plan for how the Cowboys under Schottenheimer want to look has been an impressive response to this criticism
but offensive play-calling and wide receiver talent are still holding the entire ship back until proven otherwise
it has become something a yearly tradition for national media members
mainly former players that break down tape
to turn on the Cowboys offense and revel at the sheer amount of curl
The team becoming painfully predictable in this way was a problem under Garrett
a problem when Kellen Moore was here calling plays
Schottenheimer was only here for part of the McCarthy tenure of course
but the familiarity in the process that led to his hiring makes it feel like he fits in even more to this past offensive lineage in a sense
For a lifelong assistant that’s been in the league on-and-off since 1997
getting his first head coaching opportunity for the ninth NFL team he’s been with
Schottenheimer of all coaches should be eager to break this mold and immediately start writing his own legacy as Cowboys head coach in 2025
This is a coach out of the shadows of pro football obscurity for the first time at 51 years old
handed the chance to move a franchise that’s been stuck in the mud for nearly his entire career forward in the one area they’ve needed the most help as of late
The Cowboys don’t even need to surpass either conference finalist from within their own division
the Commanders or reigning champion Eagles
to make progress that would be seen as a great positive in this area with Schottenheimer calling the offense
As opposed to a jumbled up mess of outside noise about what Schottenheimer is or isn’t capable of as a first time HC
the time between now and week one of the upcoming season will now be spent mainly laser-focused on one position of obvious need for the Cowboys
and what their offensive-minded coach can do about it
Having this black and white area to judge Schottenheimer by could be a good thing when it comes to other things the Cowboys are preparing more in the background
like the sorting out of a RB depth chart currently crowded with five names
the development of a young offensive line looking to reclaim their spot as one of the league’s best
or the progress Matt Eberflus can make on defense in his return to Dallas after having a seemingly heavy influence on their draft choices
The Cowboys have used every point of the offseason so far to gradually show how serious they are about being a better running team again
but the viability of the passing offense to at least keep them in the playoff picture remains a serious question following the draft
Perhaps the two could strike another deal in the near future

Dallas has a need at the wide receiver position, which is suddenly crowded for the Patriots. That's why Brian Hines of SB Nation's Pats Pulpit says they could be willing to trade one of their pass catchers. Hines not only had a player in mind, but a team as well, saying the Cowboys would be a good spot for Kayshon Boutte
New England Patriots WR Kayshon Boutte makes a catch for a touchdown in front of Texans CB Derek Stingley Jr
/ Brian Fluharty-Imagn Images"Boutte could profile as a low-volume X-receiver in Josh McDaniels’ offense
but the production last year at 23 years old would likely lead to him having the most trade value of the bubble players
One team that would make plenty of sense as a potential partner for Boutte or any receiver: the Dallas Cowboys."

Despite his success, he's not guaranteed a spot after the Patriots changed their coaching staff and signed Stefon Diggs and Mack Hollins in free agency. Boutte's spot was placed in even more jeopardy when New England selected Kyle Williams in Round 3 of the 2025 NFL draft
New England Patriots wide receiver Kayshon Boutte against the Arizona Cardinals
Rebilas-Imagn ImagesThe question for Dallas would be whether Boutte moves the needle
but they already have a collection of decent receivers
What they need is someone who can be a legitimate No

Dallas Stars head coach Peter DeBoer had history on his side ahead of Game 7 against the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night. He also had superfan Natalie Gauvreau over his shoulder behind the bench providing backup
The Instagram model and legend of the internet content game wasn’t going to let her boys do battle alone. Not with the season on the line. She shows up to Game 7s to provide that late game spark
There's an argument to be made that if Natalie Gauvreau aka Sexy Nat G isn’t behind the Dallas bench for this game that the Stars would have ended up losing
They needed every bit of late game motivation to win Game 7
SIGN UP for The Daily OutKick. New Look, Same Attitude.
Well before the opening face-off, Nat G let fans know that she was going to be posted up in her regular spot behind the Stars bench. She wrote on Instagram
"Jammer time behind the #starsbench tonight!"
"Well it's official. The boys need backup," she announced on TikTok prior to Game 7
"So I'm bringing their lucky charms behind the bench tonight
Sexy Nat G was absolutely correct in assuming the team needed their "lucky charms" in the building
As is the case when she's in attendance
She had delivered on her promise to attend
Now it was time to deliver on sending the Stars to the second round
The prospects of that didn’t look good early on in the third period
The Colorado Avalanche had just scored and gone up 2-0
it was down to business for Natalie and the lucky charms
If DeBeor was going to remain undefeated in Game 7s
use the behind the bench motivation to their advantage and start putting the puck in the back of the net
Mikko Rantanen got the Stars on the board, then added another to tie the game at 2 all against his former team. He wasn’t finished and neither were the Stars.
When all was said and done, Rantanen had a hat trick, Dallas had four goals, DeBeor was 9-0 in Game 7, and Natalie Gauvreau and her lucky charms had delivered.
You have to love playoff hockey. Everything from the hitting to the behind the bench action is better. Best of luck to Sexy Nat G and the Stars in the second round.

Schottenheimer has been making small moves this offseason to get a family-friendly vibe flowing through The Star
So it has all been very lovey-dovey from Schottenheimer
and the rookie class has gotten to see that first-hand
Schottenheimer wants this year's class to take things seriously once they leave The Star
they are very mature," Schottenheimer said
"I think they'll maximize the fact of
using that time to get caught up on what we're doing
"It's kinda getting closer to go time for them now."
Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer
Now it was the way Schottenheimer delivered that last sentence.
A lot of work is being done at rookie minicamp to get them up to speed on the playbook
and Schottenheimer stated that the install for rookies will be smaller than it will be for the veterans

Schottenheimer has made it clear that's over

After being thoroughly dominated inside by the Minnesota Timberwolves
finding a legitimate center appears to be at the top of the Lakers’ offseason priority list
NBA analyst Tim MacMahon has proposed an intriguing trade idea that would address this need while potentially leveraging Luka Doncic’s existing chemistry with a former teammate
MacMahon suggested the Lakers could target Dallas Mavericks center Daniel Gafford
who already has established chemistry with Lakers star Luka Doncic from their time together in Dallas
figure out things that might make sense,” MacMahon told The Hoop Collective podcast
“The Mavericks quietly sniffed around the value of Daniel Gafford before this deadline
It certainly would make sense for them to do that this summer.”
The financial aspect also supports MacMahon’s theory, as keeping three highly-paid centers would create salary cap challenges for Dallas
“Dereck Lively is a year away from getting an extension
Daniel Gafford is entering the final year of his contract
Gafford reasonably and rightly wants to get starting center money,” MacMahon explained
Lively on a big contract and pay Gafford starting center money.”
MacMahon proposed a package centered around versatile forward Rui Hachimura and draft compensation: “I could at least put something together that would at least be intriguing for the Mavericks
all those picks that they’ve got to give up
I can put something together to make sense to both sides.”
the proposal highlights the Lakers’ need to find a center who can effectively complement their stars and prevent the interior dominance that led to their playoff demise.
The proposal comes after Rudy Gobert dominated the Lakers with 27 points in the series-clinching Game 5
highlighting LA’s vulnerability at the center position with Jaxon Hayes playing limited minutes throughout the series
The trade makes sense on multiple levels, especially considering the Mavericks’ roster construction with Dereck Lively and Anthony Davis already occupying frontcourt positions
It’s the game day we’ve all been waiting for as the Colorado Avalanche visit the Dallas Stars to settle this best-of-seven
Can the Avalanche win their first win against Dallas in game seven
Will Dallas once again send Colorado packing
It feels like a relatively simple approach
but the Avalanche need to duplicate what they did in games four and six
and they should find themselves on the good side of this matchup
Colorado was relentless in attack during game six
it wasn’t enough for them to stay within reach
Tonight is a night when getting the first goal
and staying out of the box will prove paramount
You can’t let the Dallas crowd remain in it
so let’s hope Colorado comes out hot again
I’m not saying they need to have 19 SOG in the first
Sometimes that’s the break an elite player like Makar needs
He was also in on all but one other goal and Manson’s EN tally
I’ll guess that he and MacKinnon rise to the occasion tonight
Top skater from last nights games, Cale Makar pic.twitter.com/9l7EQzwB7o
but the antithesis of what Colorado will want to do
The Stars will focus on mitigating the damage from superstars like MacKinnon and Makar while simultaneously attempting to keep Colorado on the perimeter
Pete DeBoer openly criticized the refs after game six and was just as disappointed in some of the bounces his club got (or didn’t get)
Keep an eye on how the zebras play a role in this one
and don’t be surprised if Dallas draws a few with this tactic from DeBoer
Mikko Rantanen and Roope Hintz both had four points in the second period in game six
which is an NHL record for most points in the second period
Perhaps Colorado should do a little keying of their own and focus on limiting the Moose’s looks
Roope Hintz sums up Mikko Rantanen's Game 6 performance: "Beast Mode."#TexasHockey pic.twitter.com/xHdbGihkP4
Note: Lian Bichsel took a nasty spill in game six and was visibly wobbly; however
We should see our seventh installment of Blackwood vs
Oettinger unless something unforeseen hits the news desk
Oettinger has been excellent in keeping his team in games when the Avalanche skaters pour it on
Blackwood struggled in game five and a bit in game six
but ultimately has been stout for the Avalanche

the Stars may have had one of their biggest wins in franchise history on Saturday
it was just the First Round of the playoffs
the first two periods were nothing to gawk at
But in overcoming a 2-0 third period deficit to beat the Colorado Avalanche
Dallas stunned the hockey world with a gritty performance against a talented team that seemed all but destined for the Second Round
“Like coach Pete said in the speech to us at the end, ‘There was never a doubt,’” Dallas forward Wyatt Johnston said of the humorous comment from coach Pete DeBoer
“Not the way we drew it up but that just shows how special of a group we have here
It was a really cool game to be a part of.”
the lads in Victory Green accomplished some special things
they beat a very good Avalanche team that featured two of the finalists for the Ted Lindsay Award
given to the player voted most valuable by the NHL Players Association
Two, they did it without two of their own best players, defenseman Miro Heiskanen and forward Jason Robertson, who missed the entire series with injuries. Three, new forward Mikko Rantanen ingratiated himself to both the team and the entire state of Texas in the process
This moment. Our house. Our Moose. 🫎🧢🧢🧢 pic.twitter.com/flRy3pNSrH
Rantanen spent nearly a decade with the Avalanche and helped them win the 2022 Stanley Cup
He was due a big contract extension and the Avalanche couldn’t work one out
Rantanen wasn’t a good fit there and they couldn’t get a contract extension done
so the Hurricanes traded him to Dallas in March
two third-round picks and young forward Logan Stankoven
They then signed Rantanen to an eight-year extension that makes him the team’s highest paid player at an average salary of $12 million starting next season
So getting the big 28-year-old winger to be a big part of the team is crucial
Consider Saturday a big step in that process
"It's safe to say he's arrived,” DeBoer said of Rantanen
he took over the series in the last three or four games
He just decided that we were not going to go home
COL@DAL: Rantanen has a hat trick against the Avalanche
Rantanen then was part of a tic-tac-toe with Duchene that ended in Johnston scoring the game-winner from a hard angle on the power play. And for good measure, he took a beautiful bank pass from Tyler Seguin to score an empty-netter and complete a hat trick
He was definitely the straw that stirred the drink
Dallas has been wracked by adversity all season
and it has managed the bumps with team play
Bäck started his career in the minors and has battled to become an important fourth-liner in his rookie season
Harley has had a breakthrough season while Heiskanen has been injured and currently leads the 2025 playoffs in time on ice
Duchene was spectacular in the regular season while trying to find a home with his fifth team
but has been hoping for a bigger impact in the playoffs
And Seguin missed most of the regular season following hip surgery and is now trying to find his stride in the postseason
All of that hunger and drive was on display on Saturday
"I couldn't be prouder of our group because we had to do it a different way,” DeBoer said of the injuries and adversity that made his team grow
“We look like a different team with those two guys [Heiskanen and Robertson] in the lineup
You take two key players out of anybody's lineup and your team looks different
DeBoer describes the emotions of the Game 7 comeback win to advance in the playoffs
They stumbled down the stretch in the regular season and lost Game 1 to Colorado
But they bounced back and won Games 2 and 3 in overtime
They then were crushed by the Avalanche in Game 4
Colorado outgunned Dallas in Game 6 and looked like the better team to start Game 7
Jake Oettinger was huge
as he made several big saves and kept the Stars within shooting range
as they filled in for Heiskanen and helped prop up Harley
“That core, if you put the names up on the board, there's not a lot of household names there,” DeBoer said of Harley, Esa Lindell, Cody Ceci, Ilya Lyubushkin, Lian Bichsel and Alexander Petrovic
we had to overplay him because of the situation with Miro out
but those other five guys just battled and scratched
What I liked about what they did is they responded
they locked it down tonight and they gave us a chance to win
We shut down a lot of their rush and those guys grinded
Gabriel Landeskog and a group of depth forwards that made this one of the deepest Avalanche teams in recent history
“It’s tough because you put your heart and soul into the whole year
all of it and then you’re in a good position and then it slips away on you,” said Colorado coach Jared Bednar
it’s tough because I know how hard these guys worked and how bad they wanted it and that’s all you really think of at this point.”
the thinking now goes to who they might face in the Second Round
and I think we have so much confidence in our team that we can beat anyone,” Johnston said
“It’s great to go against a team that’s one of the best in the league
it’s great to gain that confidence in beating a team like that and just try to build on it
we have that confidence that we can win any series against anyone.”
Wyatt Johnston speaks to the media after the Game 7 win
And while there are still more stories to write in this season
there is a chance we will look back on Saturday as a defining moment in franchise history
"I think there's something special going on,” DeBoer said
“It sure doesn't feel like we've only won one round and we're just getting started
but I believe there's something special going on."
It takes everyone. All in. 🟢🟢🟢🟢 pic.twitter.com/pkg9Jc4t8z

Many of Mikko Rantanen's greatest moments have come in a Colorado Avalanche sweater
It's just that the most defining moment of his career came at their expense
the feeling was incredible to win a series," Rantanen said in his postgame media availability
"This series was not exactly what I expected
Belief was there with the group the whole time
I was able to make a play to get the first one and the crowd started to roll."
The Stars, attempting to reach the conference finals for a third straight time, advance to the semifinal round where they will await the winner of the series between the St. Louis Blues and Winnipeg Jets
That encounter will be decided Sunday in Game 7 in Winnipeg
the Stars' collective focus will shift to another Central Division foe
Part of what made the Avalanche-Stars series arguably the most intriguing first-round matchup was because it placed two 100-point teams that are in championship window against each other
the most notable being the team that traded quite a bit to land Rantanen -- with the hope he could help it win a Stanley Cup -- needed him to defeat the team that he won a championship with in 2022
Rantanen responded with a three-point performance in Game 5 and a four-point showing in Game 6 only to then have a hand in each goal Saturday. His first goal came on a power play with 12:12 remaining in the third period when he found enough space to fire a wrist shot that beat Mackenzie Blackwood
Drury's penalty opened the door for Rantanen to score a tying goal that might be one of, if not, his signature salvo. Rantanen skated into the Avalanche zone in a 1-on-3 before he split two players before going around the net for a wraparound goal that went off the skate of Samuel Girard with 6:14 left
Three minutes later, the Stars received another power-play opportunity that saw Rantanen, along with former Avalanche forward Matt Duchene, work together to find Wyatt Johnston for the inning goal
"I couldn't care less who scored for them, I really couldn't," Avalanche captain and left winger Gabriel Landeskog said when asked about what it was like to watch Rantanen deliver
"Mikko is one of my best friends and I love him
but I couldn't care if he scored or if somebody else scored."
Rantanen was part of a homegrown movement that saw the Avalanche go from finishing what was then the worst record in the salary cap era in 2016-17 to becoming a perennial favorite to win the Stanley Cup
They also become a model by building through the draft
the Avs were facing the prospect of possibly making a difficult decision
They had yet to agree to a new contract with Rantanen
came the blockbuster trade that few throughout the league saw coming
The Avalanche traded Rantanen in a three-team deal that saw them get Martin Necas and Drury along with two draft picks
Rantanen's time with the Hurricanes was limited to just two goals and six points in 13 games
Despite the fact the Hurricanes are also among that cadre of championship contenders
Rantanen struggled to find cohesion in Raleigh
Rather than run the risk of watching him leave in free agency
the Hurricanes put out feelers to a few teams
A long-time admirer of Rantanen, the Stars packaged two first-round picks, three second-round selection and former prized prospect Logan Stankoven to get Rantanen
They signed him to an eight-year contract worth $12 million annually
"It's two things: It's where our team's at
and it's Mikko Rantanen," Stars general manager Jim Nill told ESPN in March
Rantanen finished the regular season with five goals and 18 points in 20 games prior to the showdown with his former team
Not only did Rantanen's hat trick hand the Avalanche to their second first-round exit since winning the Stanley Cup
but it continued a theme of former Avalanche players eliminating their former employers
The Avalanche and Stars faced each other in last season's Western Conference semifinal that saw Duchene
another former Avalanche first-round pick delivered the devastating blow
"It seems pretty fitting," Johnston said of Rantanen
and I think that goes a little extra when it's a guy like that who is such a big part of our team and was there for a long time and everyone knows the trade that went on
As if Rantanen scoring a hat trick in rallying from two goals down wasn't enough
there's also the fact that this is the ninth consecutive Game 7 that Stars coach Peter DeBoer has won in his career
DeBoer's nine wins in Game 7s broke a tie with Darryl Sutter for the most in NHL history
It was also DeBoer's third Game 7 win with the Stars
"I felt something was going to happen," DeBoer said
according to unofficial election results at about 12 a.m

a car wash business owner and former city plan commissioner
chaired the council’s government performance and financial management committee
Housing and development have been focal points in his three City Council terms
He said the district’s greatest challenge is skyrocketing housing costs. He wants to create standards for approving zoning changes and has advocated for reforming city parking standards and improving sidewalks and bike lanes
He raised more money than any of the more than 40 City Council contenders this election
and had the backing of the Apartment Association of Greater Dallas
MetroTex Association of Realtors and the Dallas Builders Association
He also initiated the West Oak Cliff Area Plan — which Whatley has taken aim at
and argued there’s a need for more communication between city leadership and residents

she suggested expanding equity strategy target areas and property tax relief programs for first-time homebuyers
and increasing outreach for quality credit repair programs
Both Whatley and Vanhof vouched for a more community-focused approach to development

The race is a rematch between Moreno and Kaur
Moreno won nearly 85% of the roughly 2,200 votes cast in the last faceoff
District 2 voters made their voices heard — reaffirming their confidence in our progress and choosing to continue the work we’ve started together,” Moreno said in a statement shortly after 7 p.m
Moreno, who was first elected in 2021, raised nearly $108,000 for his campaign, while Kaur reported $200 in contributions, according to finance reports through April 23

Kaur’s campaign focused on pushing for transparency and accountability at City Hall
She’s taken issue with the city’s approach to homelessness and argued for greater oversight of public spending
Her platform also included upgrading neighborhood parks and ensuring compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act across the district
Dallas City Council member Zarin Gracey took an early lead in his bid for a second term on Saturday with nearly 54% of the votes
Gracey has earned a reputation for being present for residents in District 3 by driving through neighborhoods in the southwestern part of the city and knocking on doors to hear their concerns and vision for the future
He said he has laid groundwork to bring more affordable housing and economic opportunities to the district while maintaining quality of life and is ready to see that plan through in his next term
“I’m grateful,” Gracey said by phone from a watch party at the Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce
his focus was on earning trust of residents who did not vote for him
but my heart breaks for the 45% that didn’t vote for me
That’s a sincere thing because I know there was a lot of areas where I can improve ..
but we’ve made great progress in the community and I’m grateful they gave me another opportunity.”
The incumbent was challenged by engineer John Sims
who first ran against him for the seat in 2023
an assistant professor of public leadership at the University of North Texas at Dallas
The incumbent raised $18,632 through April while Sims raised no money and Lightbourne raised $3,369
Gracey worked for the city for 16 years in various offices
he advocated for the installation of 24 license plate readers to increase neighborhood security
the closure of a biofuel plant that disturbed residents with an oppressive smell and the removal of eyesores around the area
The district includes multiple green spaces but is also a center of strategic development planning
Although Dallas originally intended to turn a 12-acre former hospital site on South Hampton Road into a homeless services facility
Gracey pushed his colleagues to solicit bids to build affordable housing on the site and support homeless services where they are more needed
He is also advocating for the city to remediate and redevelop a former U.S
“We have a sure understanding of what our quality of life
we don’t have to say no to every single economic development opportunity,” Gracey said in a previous interview
Dallas City Council incumbent Jaime Resendez had a strong lead with 84% of the votes
Resendez is vying for his fourth and final term representing District 5
has seen the lowest voter turnout in the last four election cycles
Residents cast a little more than 1,600 votes in 2023 and more than 2,100 in 2021
Resendez grew up in the Pleasant Grove area and has served on the council since 2019
He is an attorney and former Dallas Independent School District trustee
Resendez advocated for the expansion of parks and green spaces in the Pleasant Grove area
enhancing pedestrian and street safety and improving Internet access
said on her website that she’s focused on improving policing in Pleasant Grove
She is also focused on the area’s infrastructure and boosting opportunities for homeownership
and advocated for a free-market approach to housing with fewer zoning restrictions and increased city incentives for affordable single-family homes
Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Adam Bazaldua took an early lead
as South Dallas’ District 7 saw a crowded field of candidates looking to unseat the incumbent
Bazaldua is seeking his fourth and final term
several challengers are vying for the District 7 spot
former Dallas community police oversight vice chair Jose Rivas Jr.
and project manager and creator of Coffee and Politics 101 Cydney Walker
Bazaldua has served on the City Council since 2019
when at 32 he was the youngest person elected to the body
the three-time incumbent has highlighted efforts to revitalize Fair Park
expand affordable housing and enhance public safety in the district
has said he wants to focus on safer neighborhoods
along with greater fiscal responsibility and transparency in the city
Hesson ran on a platform centered on fighting gentrification and displacement
He has said he supports redirecting Fair Park revenues to benefit neighboring communities and pushing for environmental justice reforms in areas plagued by pollution and illegal dumping
and transportation improvements to better connect South Dallas residents with jobs and services
Lamar “Yaka” Jefferson and longtime community activist Marvin Crenshaw
Jefferson made headlines with his twin brother when they sued the city in 2023 after being disqualified from the council race
He’s stated that he’s running to give residents a stronger voice
although his current campaign details are limited
has run for City Council more than a dozen times since 1983
He finished third when he was on the ballot in 2023
The new City Council will become part of the body tasked with crafting the next city budget
and dealing with new charter-mandated rules that require more funding for police-related initiatives
addressing issues with raising property values
Council members will face issues like homelessness
affordable housing and failing city infrastructure
The representative for District 7 will answer to several historic neighborhoods. Top issues in the district include oversight of major redevelopment projects like the revitalization of the Forest Theater and surrounding area as well as the ongoing maintenance of buildings at Fair Park
which has buildings with millions of dollars in neglected needs despite the city committing money to address the issues
Dallas City Council member Paula Blackmon appeared headed toward winning a fourth term representing District 9 on Tuesday
according to unofficial early voting results
Blackmon had nearly 78% of the vote over her sole opponent
Blackmon has pledged to continue supporting infrastructure and road maintenance upgrades in her East Dallas district during her final two years before she must leave office due to term limits
She has made completing the dredging of White Rock Lake one of her top priorities for her next term and pushed for state and federal funding to supplement $20 million in bond money approved by voters last year
“I’m just excited that the voters have said they want to return me back to City Hall and I’m ready to get to work,” Blackmon said by phone from her victory party at Smoky Rose restaurant
with $122,476 in contributions as of April 23
the most recent campaign finance records available
a retiree in his first bid for public office
she served as chief of staff for former Mayor Mike Rawlings and deputy chief of staff for Mayor Tom Leppert
She helped lead the creation of the Dallas Opioid Strike Force in 2022
which works with community partners to expand treatment resources and pushes for policy changes
She supports expanding mixed-income housing to increase affordability by streamlining permitting and “responsible growth.”
she advocates for it to remain a public park and opposes development that could threaten its integrity
She said likely development along the nearby Garland Road must be paired with crosswalks and measures for connectivity and safety with the park
Blackmon was a vocal opponent against two controversial ballot amendments that passed in 2024; they will require the city to hire hundreds more police officers and make it easier for residents to sue public officials for charter violations
Blackmon said the city must look for ways to expand the tax base with quality housing and retail
“It’s the district that I raised my kids in
so it’s pretty special,” Blackmon said in a previous interview
“I just feel it’s an opportunity for me to give back
so this is my opportunity to say thank you
and I show up every day trying to do the best work I can.”
Kathy Stewart is projected to easily clinch the City Council seat for Northeast Dallas
which includes Lake Highlands and Hamilton Park
Stewart is headed toward securing a second term by an overwhelmingly wide margin against a familiar opponent — Sirrano Keith Baldeo
an online news site publisher who raced against Stewart in 2023
Stewart had about 93% of the vote as of about 11 p.m
“I am very grateful that the voters in D10 decided overwhelmingly to send me back to City Hall for two more years,” Stewart said
”I will continue serving with an open mind and heart
focusing on reducing crime and improving the quality of life throughout the District.”
was the executive director of Uptown Dallas Inc
and the Lake Highlands Public Improvement District
trails and the environment committee and was vice chair of the public safety committee
Stewart has pointed to her success bringing new parks to the district
including one aimed at transforming a crime hotspot at Forest Lane and Audelia Road
Stewart has said the greatest challenge in her district is revitalizing aging apartments and shopping centers, and she has vocalized a need for better traffic safety. In her Dallas Morning News election questionnaire
she noted she’s been working to enhance Skillman Street and wants to launch a master plan for the Interstate 635 corridor
She was endorsed by the Dallas Police Association
the Dallas Fire Fighters Association and former representatives of the district
Baldeo described himself on social media as “an independent conservative” running on behalf of Christians in Dallas who feel marginalized and underrepresented
He sued Stewart earlier this year on accusations she doesn’t live in the district and lied about her attorney status
also campaigned for the seat as a write-in candidate
Dallas City Council member Cara Mendelsohn took an early lead in the race for District 12
according to a Dallas Morning News tally of unofficial totals
and real estate investor Jose Cavazos received about 30% and 6% of the votes
Mendelsohn was first elected to the City Council in 2019 and ran unopposed in 2023
The incumbent raised nearly $99,000 for her campaign, according to finance reports through April 23.
District 12, home to about 96,000 people and 47,000 households, is one of the few districts that stretch beyond Dallas County’s limits. The district reaches into Denton and Collin counties, with the Bush Turnpike on its northern border.
It’s also the city’s only council district with no Dallas ISD schools. Most constituents live in the Richardson, Carrollton-Farmers Branch and Plano school districts.
Mendelsohn campaigned on her record of public safety advocacy, infrastructure investment and fiscal responsibility. She has been vocal about lowering the property tax rate, increasing policing, curbing homelessness encampments and opposing expanding housing policies that she says could negatively impact neighborhoods.
She chairs the council’s public safety committee, ad hoc committee on general investigating and ethics, and the ad hoc committee on legislative affairs.
Opponent Rossouw’s platform focused on allocating resources to address the greatest infrastructure needs — such as roads, alleys, and drainage — as well as public safety and transparency. Political newcomer Cavazos described himself on social media as a “pro-life” candidate but did not release extensive proposals for city policies.
Gay Donnell Willis is hoping voters keep her at the City Hall horseshoe — and unofficial vote totals show they’re so far inclined to do just that.
Willis is competing against realtor Diane Benjamin to secure a spot on the City Council representing northwest and north Central Dallas, including Preston Hollow and Vickery Meadow. Willis is looking for her third term. Benjamin is a first-time candidate.
Willis had about 65% of the vote, according to unofficial totals.
“I’m so grateful to the residents of D13 for returning me to office and look forward to continuing positive momentum of getting things accomplished for all residents of this district,” Willis said.
Public safety has taken center stage in the race for this seat.
Benjamin, a neighborhood leader in Preston Hollow, has said Dallas residents don’t feel safe despite annual declines in violence, and cited slow police response times.
Willis, the CEO and president of the Turtle Creek Conservancy, served on the public safety committee, which put her at the table for high-profile public safety topics in recent years — including police recruitment, officer retention and violent crime. She has been vocal about helping victims of family violence, and wants more officers to address quality-of-life issues, like speeding and loud music.
Benjamin has supplied that the city should dedicate more toward crime and human trafficking reduction, and voiced a need to better retain Dallas police officers. She has criticized what she called excessive city spending and said Dallas needs to focus on public safety, infrastructure and zoning issues.
Willis has pointed to street and alley maintenance as her district’s top challenge and said she plans to continue applying pressure in increasing the street repair and maintenance budget. Benjamin cited road repair as a priority after public safety.
Willis said she brings together leaders of different associations or agencies to fix an issue. She outraised Benjamin by more than double the funds in the lead-up to Election Day.

Five goals and six assists for 11 points in three games

He did it in the last 13 minutes when the Stars had gone scoreless for 47
Dallas wasn’t even generating decent scoring chances
I might have been 600 words into my postmortem Stars-overmatched-without-Miro-and-Robo column when Mikko called for a rewrite and began to plunder the Colorado defense
You could not have scripted a better ending for Stars GM Jim Nill or a worse one for the Colorado management group that decided it couldn’t pay to keep Rantanen and shipped him to Carolina in January
“It was a difficult year personally,” Rantanen said late Saturday
I love every one of those (Colorado players)
The Stars have other worlds to conquer and already know that if they win the next round
they will face one of the teams that eliminated them in the Western Conference finals (Vegas or Edmonton) once more
With Miro Heiskanen and Jason Robertson set to return soon

He is buying a new Windows PC and he’s thinking of investing in new antivirus software
and he asked me what I used for antivirus software
He had his last PC for more than 10 years and he had been using one of the large antivirus suites that was charging him by the year
AVG and Bitdefender have antivirus and security solutions that can help keep your PC safe
but those features overlap with a lot of the features of Windows’ built-in Defender product
If you search for recommendations for the best antivirus suite
Business BriefingBecome a business insider with the latest news
Likewise, if you search for, “do I need antivirus software,” you’ll find some pretty good arguments that you can go without it.
I think you need to examine your individual use case as you shop for antivirus and security software.
My personal recommendation is most home users really do not need to pay for antivirus or security software.
Microsoft and Apple provide built-in antivirus solutions. Browsers like Google Chrome and others do a really good job of warning you when you’re wading into dangerous territory online. Email providers like Google, Microsoft and Yahoo scan your email for dangerous attachments.
If you’re running Windows 11 (and you do need to be running Windows 11), you can go to your Settings and then Privacy and Security and then Windows Security to see a dashboard of the different security categories monitored by Windows Security.
If you click the Virus & Threat Protection, you’ll see the last scan and results as well when the virus definitions were last updated. There are red, yellow and green status icons for each section, so you can see at a glance any areas that need your attention. Just make sure you keep current with updates.
Likewise for Apple computers. Just keep current on your operating system and security updates from Apple.
What happens if you click on something in a browser and you start getting strange pop-ups or web pages redirect you to some scammy ad page? That can happen, and for those instances, I download and use Malwarebytes, which can scan and repair your system when you suspect you’ve clicked on something bad.
Malwarebytes has a free version (for Mac or Windows), and you should try it if you need it. I do recommend paying for it if you need it on a regular basis, but I don’t recommend leaving it installed on your computer. When I’ve had to use it, I’d load it, run it and let it clean up and then uninstall it.
I just don’t think any software that’s running on your system and doing largely the same thing as the built-in security software is a good thing. In my experience, third-party live antivirus protection apps can and do slow things down.
I fully expect many of you will disagree with me, and I don’t mind. Erring on the side of caution is not a bad thing.
If you use your computer for a small business, or you make your living using your computer, you may feel safer with a security suite installed. I don’t have a problem with you using any software that helps you feel safer online.

Horace John Groves III’s time of death was 3:51 a.m
according to the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s record
A report on his manner of death was still pending as of Friday night
Groves was the first person to die in custody involving Dallas police this year
The Dallas Police Special Investigations Unit and the Dallas County District Attorney are now conducting independent investigations into his death
officers conducted a felony stop just before 1 a.m
after they ran the vehicle’s license plate and discovered it was associated with Groves
who was wanted by Corinth police for burglary and aggravated sexual assault
an officer placed Groves in handcuffs and he sat on the curb
Officers also located in the car a drug pipe
as well as two handguns that were determined to have been stolen during the burglary and aggravated sexual assault in Corinth
Police said Groves was placed in the back of a squad car just before 1:30 a.m
according to in-car video footage released by police
He then told an officer sitting in the front seat that he hadn’t had water in “about six or seven hours” and was having breathing difficulties
who was asking Groves if he had any medical problems
then requested support from Dallas Fire-Rescue just before 1:40 a.m.
Dallas Fire-Rescue personnel could be seen checking on Groves
who repeated that he hadn’t had water for several hours and was having “a hard time breathing.” One individual then noted that Groves’ lungs sounded good and his oxygen level was at 98%
but the Dallas Fire-Rescue personnel said they didn’t carry water with them
When again asked if he has any medical conditions
I have asthma and I’m broke down and beat up..
and dehydrated.” He didn’t say what drugs he took
Groves was placed in an interview room in the Southeast Patrol Station and given water
Groves was escorted to the restroom twice at 2:25 a.m
a detective entered the room to begin the interview
In the shared interview room video footage
Groves could be seen leaning back in his chair and exhibiting signs of being unwell
before asking the officer to help him sit up
The officer then assisted him as he was grunting
replaced with a message from Dallas police saying that Groves “collapsed and slid out of the chair and onto the floor.” In the news release
police said officers called Dallas Fire-Rescue at 3:02 a.m
while doing CPR and chest compressions on Groves for close to 10 minutes
Dallas Fire-Rescue then arrived at 3:13 a.m
and Groves was declared deceased at 3:39 a.m.
is earlier than that in the medical examiner’s record
When asked for clarification by The Dallas Morning News
Dallas police said their records indicate 3:39 a.m
Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesperson Jason Evans told The News Saturday the department “is aware of this incident and is in the process of reviewing the response to determine whether appropriate protocols and procedures were followed.”

After allowing four third-period goals and seeing their season end at the hands of their former teammate, Mikko Rantanen
it obviously wasn’t a very chipper visiting locker room at American Airlines Center on Saturday
Check out what some of the Avs’ said below
including Colorado’s star player Nathan MacKinnon
all of it and then you’re in a good position and then it slips away on you
“Well, what he did in the second period the other night
That’s the thing with Mikko is it’s not about all his creating multiple chances every time he touches the puck
You get that first goal in a nice individual effort and finds a way to get the another one with the wrap-around
hits our skate but it’s still a high-quality play and he capitalizes on it
Felt like we were in total control and then Mikko
He was a difference-maker and he took over
Felt like we were in complete control of the game the whole time and just lost it.”
On if the first-round exit is hard to process:
“Yeah, definitely. They were missing their best D and maybe their best forward
On the conversation on the bench during the third period:
“Thought we had a great start to the period
I thought we came back down and created some good looks and stayed on the gas
Cale [Makar] breaks his stick on a one-timer right from the slot they go down
The margin for error in the playoffs is really small
I think we still pushed back and it’s a tied hockey game and then they get a power play again.”
On if the state of the locker room is shocked:
I think we felt like our play was good enough at 5-on-5 and controlled that pace of the game and just
you go up 2-0 and then we’re still playing well 2-1
they get one but then we have a couple other chances and we’re still right there and then they get another one and again just right there and tough one on the penalty kill and that’s the way she goes.”

He first has to prove the Cowboys right at the team's rookie minicamp
potentially using the disappointment he felt during the draft as fuel for the fire
In an exclusive interview with Tommy Yarrish of DallasCowboys.com, Holden opened up about some of the pain he felt after seeing himself go undrafted while others got to see their name called

"I was hurt," Holden told Yarrish. "That 24-hour rule
I'll do what I can to show everybody that I belong
the Cowboys selected Oregon offensive tackle Ajani Cornelius in the sixth round
Holden will be joining former Oregon wide receiver coach Junior Adams
who the Cowboys hired to Brian Schottenheimer's new staff this offseason
Holden told Yarrish that he's looking forward to getting to reunite with Adams
who likely helped play a part in getting the Cowboys to sign his former receiver
The pair spent two seasons together in Eugene and will now have a chance to strengthen that relationship if Holden ends up making the 53-man roster or practice squad in Dallas
"I'm very excited," Holden told Yarrish
"He told me if he got a chance to come get me
Holden played the first two years of college at Alabama, where he tallied 46 catches for 570 yards and seven touchdowns. He arrived to Eugene in 2023 and became an immediate contributor in the passing game for former Duck quarterbacks Bo Nix and Dillon Gabriel
his final season at Oregon was marred by an unfortunate choice he made on the field
In the win over the Ohio State Buckeyes in October
Holden spit on Buckeyes defensive back Davison Igbinosun

he responded to a user on X that spoke up about not defending someone that chooses to spit on another
"I haven't ever defended anyone spitting on nobody," the one user wrote,
"As you shouldn’t fam!" Holden responded. "Ya boy made a stupid mistake and been learning from it ever since and going to continue to grow and elevate as a man."
It's possible that some teams took the incident into account when evaluating Holden during the draft process. But regardless of what happened in the past, Holden now has a chance to rewrite his future in a place that might have been the best possible fit for him.
Here are 3 players who should really help the Cowboys this season
[Ed note:] A guest post from long-time NFL writer Doug Farrar
reality usually sinks in sooner than later
but we’re not here to get into that – we’re here to spread fairy dust and belief juice as much as possible
we’re taking a detailed look at three impact players for each NFL team – one underrated veteran
We begin with the Dallas Cowboys
whose owner/president/general manager (Jerry Jones) and Son of Jerrah/co-owner/executive vice president/CEO/director of player personnel (Stephen Jones) are even better at handing out optimism in the face of personnel shortfalls as they are at handing out titles to each other
Everybody even remotely familiar with the Cowboys’ current offense knows full well that the receiver corps is far too thin
which represented 36.1% of Dallas’ receiver targets
Not what you want to go into a season with
and after refusing to accentuate that group with a single move in free agency or the draft
the Jones Boys are stuck trying to explain the process
Jerry Jones said after the draft that “the train has not left the station” when it came to bringing in more receiver help
and Stephen Jones recently said this about the guys behind Lamb on the depth chart – with Jalen Tolbert
and KaVontae Turpin as the primary secondaries:
and that’s why we have had an interest in upgrading that room.”
the remaining receivers in free agency don’t offer a ton
When you’re trying to make a receiver room work with Keenan Allen
you’re pretty much trying to put up a wall in your house with nothing but spackle
No disrespect to any of those fine gentlemen and what they’ve achieved in their careers
The good news after all that bad news is that Stephen Jones might be underestimating one of his own with the assumption that Jalen Tolbert hasn’t shown enough to be a true No
2 receiver in the offense now run by Brian Schottenheimer and Klayton Adams
the 2022 third-round pick from South Alabama had a career year in which he caught 49 passes on 74 targets for 610 yards and seven touchdowns
195-pound Tolbert has the speed to simply outrun cornerbacks and an evolved sense of the position’s nuances
Tolbert can shake a defender out of his shoes
and his ability to make catches in contested situations really shows up on tape
“I know what I can do,” Tolbert said in a recent interview
Tolbert’s “jumps’ in career progression are both figurative and literal
so don’t be surprised if he does become that precious No
2 receiver in 2025… because he was already that to a point in 2024
Before we automatically assume that the Cowboys' receiver group will be CeeDee Lamb and the Pips again, it might be time to take another good look at Jalen Tolbert's 2024 season. He could have a real breakout 2025. pic.twitter.com/W01GwyL06m
Speaking of position groups led by a superstar and undermanned elsewhere
which is an obvious check in the plus column
Jerry Jones just has to figure out how to get that dude a second contract
Parsons’ 14 sacks and 70 total pressures made up 43.8% of the team’s 32 quarterback takedowns
and 43% of the team’s 163 quarterback disruptions from the edge
who was responsible for seven sacks and 37 pressures
who bagged three sacks and nine pressures in an injury-scuttled season
The Cowboys did get Boston College’s Donovan Ezeiruaku in the second round of the draft
because Ezeiruaku is one of the best pass-rushers in the 2025 class
But if Ezeiruaku suffers the same fate as most edge rushers making the transition from the NCAA to the NFL
and it takes a year to get the hang of what it takes to terrorize quarterbacks at the next level
$3.25 million deal with $1.43 million guaranteed
Fowler totaled 11 sacks and 50 total pressures on just 387 pass-rushing snaps
The difference between the Dante Fowler who spent those two seasons in Dallas
and the Dante Fowler that ramped up his pressure production
When Dan Quinn was the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator in 2022 and 2023
he deployed Fowler much more as a straight-up edge rusher designed to beat the tackle to the outside of the arc
When both Quinn and Fowler moved to the nation’s capital last season
the focus on Fowler’s skill set was clear – Fowler was used far more as a gap-shooting weapon in stunts and overload fronts
Fowler is more of a speed player than a pure speed-to-power guy
so the best way to use his physical assets is to bomb offensive lines with that multi-gap speed
Eberflus does have an interesting history with stunts and using speed-rushers to penetrate blockers with the one-on-one matchups that overload fronts provide
so it’s entirely imaginable that he’ll be able to bring out the most in Fowler’s game
“I know this is going to be a fast, physical defense,” Fowler said of his reunion in Big D
Fowler could be even more ready than you may remember
Dan Quinn and Dante Fowler Jr. were together in Dallas in 2022-2023. Then, they both went to Washington in 2024, and Fowler's production nearly doubled. The difference? Quinn used Fowler more as a gap-shooting stunt weapon, and it paid off. Time for Matt Eberflus to stunt-fu. pic.twitter.com/cfsNYHfCIS
Don’t you hate when bad things happen to good people
was a no-star recruit out of high school who impressed East Carolina’s coaches and got himself a scholarship once he improved his grade point average
his first season as a starter with the Pirates and his second overall
Revel allowed just 19 catches on 42 targets for 250 yards
Revel knocked it out of the park against bigger schools like Michigan and SMU
and all kinds of bigger schools offered him major transfer portal dollars to jump ship
“Just the fact that he came back when he could’ve left so easily,” former East Carolina defensive coordinator and current head coach Blake Harrell recently said of Revel
“He could’ve left for almost 10 times the money probably
when a guy wants to stick around to finish out his career where he started…
“For that young man to come back and what he means to Pirate nation
what he means to East Carolina and the loyalty he showed this place
you won’t find that much anymore and you won’t see that much in college football
Revel wasn’t 100% happy about it after suffering a torn ACL in practice that cost him all but three games in his 2024 campaign
Revel was on his way to even better things
allowing eight catches on 21 targets for 195 yards
It was only because of that injury that the Cowboys were able to commit larceny by getting Ravel with the 76th overall pick in the third round
he’s got tape that shows him to be as adept in coverage as any cornerback prospect in this draft class – especially in press coverage
but also run guys down the field,” Harrell concluded
you worry about giving up the deep ball and getting beat deep
but he certainly has the athleticism to turn and run with guys down the field
and give you everything he’s got to this program.”
Which would be a very good thing for a secondary that has seen Trevon Diggs on the field for just 13 games over the last two seasons
Shavon Revel Jr. turned down major dollars from bigger schools last season to stay at East Carolina. His "reward" was a torn ACL that cut his 2024 season short. The Cowboys got a massive steal in the third round, because this is first-round tape all day long. pic.twitter.com/FpbTD9y9tx
Which players are your Dallas Cowboys secret superstars this season

according to unofficial vote totals early Sunday morning
Cadena won 50.45% of the votes cast and narrowly avoided a run-off, according to unofficial final results. The race would have had another election on Saturday
if no candidate secures more than 50% of the vote
The seat was left vacant because council member Omar Narvaez reached his term limit
who received widespread support from appointed and elected officials in the district that covers West Dallas and northwest Dallas
said she was focused on improving public safety and bringing in affordable housing as well as quality of life amenities
Political PointsGet the latest politics news from North Texas and beyond
Her primary fundraising rival was former council member Monica Alonzo
who already has served three terms on the City Council and has tried to reclaim the seat every election since being defeated by Narvaez in 2017
She would only serve for one term if she prevails
Alonzo has said she wants to spur investment in infrastructure and promotes “responsible development.” She has said that she plans to reinstate crime watch groups and strengthen partnerships with law enforcement officers
who was elected to one term on the City Council in District 14 in 2019
Congress last year and lost in the primary
Candidates in the race raised about $193,000
Alonzo led the pack with $92,000 followed by Cadena
a new political action committee called Revitalize Dallas sent out mailers in support of Alonzo in West Dallas
The effort was funded by short-term homestay platform
which had contributed half a million toward the effort
Airbnb’s involvement is likely to be connected to an unresolved fight between the city and short-term rental operators. The city reignited a legal fight it lost earlier this year, against ordinances that all but banned short term rentals from single-family neighborhoods
The district has been ground zero for the city’s most pressing environmental concerns
Residents in West Dallas have spent years advocating against GAF
and have complained about the company’s impact on residents’ health
The neighborhood also has been affected by gentrification that is leading to rising home prices and displacement of residents
Residents in northwest Dallas also have been pushing for the city to invest in Bachman Lake park and surrounding communities to mirror White Rock Lake in East Dallas

She went to Boston University for graduate school
who looked toward the sky and pondered what might come next
all while Colorado was enjoying not just an emotional surge but a physical lift from the return of captain Gabriel Landeskog … and the Stars are still standing
What’s left for Saturday night at the suddenly reasonable start time of 7 p.m.
When the Stars staggered to the regular season finish line with seven straight losses
That carried over into the start of this series
But when Pete DeBoer put the Finnish line together in the middle of Game 2 — Rantanen
Hintz and Mikael Granlund — it started to click
winning puck battles along the wall to support his line mates
By the time we reached the middle of Game 6
the Finnish line was surging with all three scoring goals in the second period and Hintz and Rantanen each getting four points
Rantanen was speaking to the team during a timeout
He not only understands the Stars’ system now
Rantanen spent the better part of nine seasons with Colorado and was the club’s second-leading scorer (tied with MacKinnon) in last year’s second round series with Dallas
He now leads the Stars in scoring with eight points
they’ve been what we envision them to be and what we need them to be
frankly,” Head Coach Pete DeBoer said Friday
“That’s got to be a dominant line for us like MacKinnon is for them
And the best thing is they have done it without cheating defensively
they’ve created their offense the right way.’’
How does a superstar player, who has just cashed in at about the highest level possible in the NHL (8 years, $96 million)
He has already won the minds of Dallas fans
the game all players dream about as kids whether it’s in a U.S
We know from history that not all Game 7 heroes in Dallas look alike
They don’t always come straight out of the superstar mold
We can go back in time to Mike Keane securing Dallas’ place in its first Stanley Cup Final with two goals against his former Colorado teammates in the 1999 Western Conference finals
the Stars had to go seven games to eliminate Seattle in the second round two years ago
got the game-winner the day after he turned 20
Against Vegas in the first round last year
Johnston had the first Dallas goal in a 2-1 Game 7 victory
but who produced the game-winning goal in the third
Another Keane-type checking forward in Radek Faksa
So there’s no rule that says the Saturday night hero for either team has to be a veteran All-Star
Dallas fans will be fine if it turns out to be Oettinger
has started to distance himself from Mackenzie Blackwood the last two games even while pucks were flying in both nets
Colorado’s “high-danger” chances were much greater than the Stars
and Oettinger didn’t let two goals go in off his back
If the puck would stop caroming off of Stars players’ skates and shoulders
DeBoer joked during Game 6 that Dallas didn’t really want to be trading end-to-end scoring chances with the Avalanche
Colorado really no longer has the edge in the scary forwards department
And it feels like Rantanen is set to deliver on that contract at the biggest time in the biggest game

Milliken is leaving to be the next president of the University of California
UC officials announced Friday afternoon that Milliken will lead that system
which has more than 295,000 students and 10 campuses as well as health centers and research labs
His departure comes as other longtime leaders in the system are leaving as well
including UT-Austin President Jay Hartzell and UT-Dallas President Richard Benson
“The University of California is universally regarded as the preeminent public research university in the world
and I am deeply honored to have an opportunity to join the many talented faculty
and campus leaders in their vital work,” Milliken said in a release
The Education LabReceive our in-depth coverage of education issues and stories that affect North Texans
“It is more important than ever that we expand the education
and public service for which UC is so widely admired and which has benefited so many Californians.”
Milliken’s move comes as Texas lawmakers debate a major overhaul at public universities that would shift more control over what’s taught and who is hired to politically connected regents
UT regents named John Zerwas, executive vice chancellor for health affairs, as the system’s acting chancellor, according to a release
Milliken will remain chancellor until May 30
In 2018, Milliken, a former chancellor of the City University of New York and former president of the University of Nebraska, was tapped to lead the Texas system
Milliken oversaw 256,000 students across 14 campuses
UT enrolled record-high numbers of students under his leadership
Annual research expenditures across the system neared $5 billion
Milliken emphasized increasing access to higher education for low-income and first-generation students
“We need to do a better job of providing access to the social and economic opportunities of higher education,” he told The Dallas Morning News in 2019
“I tell people within university communities that I speak to that tuition is not going to be free,” he said at the time
“we should raise more private money and do everything we can to hold costs down.”
UT announced a groundbreaking financial aid program that offers free tuition to students whose families make less than $100,000 annually
“We are fortunate to have had Chancellor Milliken at the helm of the UT System for almost seven years,” UT Regents Chairman Kevin Eltife said in a Friday release
“The board and I are grateful for our close and very productive relationship with him
and we are proud of what we accomplished together
He has led the UT System admirably and innovatively.”
Drake said Milliken has the “depth of wisdom and experience to handle the challenges and opportunities” of the presidency
Texas higher education institutions are under increased scrutiny following a 2023 state law that bans diversity
equity and inclusion efforts at public colleges and universities
UT closed 21 DEI offices, eliminated 311 DEI-related jobs and canceled 681 contracts, Milliken said in a 2024 Senate hearing
Milliken will take over a system that has taken an outsize role amid President Donald Trump’s higher education targets, The Los Angeles Times reports.
UC is under federal investigations into alleged antisemitism against employees stemming from widespread pro-Palestinian protests and encampments last spring
Federal lawyers are also probing the selective UC admissions process, claiming it illegally considers race in admission
The DMN Education Lab deepens the coverage and conversation about urgent education issues critical to the future of North Texas.
