The 2025 season is just around the corner so EDFL Media will be previewing each club heading into Round One
we chat to Deer Park coach Jamie Madigan who provides some insights on their 2025 campaign
"The focus in pre-season has primarily been on gaining a very solid fitness base that will prepare the playing group for the rigours of a Premier Division season
Training has been very solid interspersing running blocks in amongst high intensity skill drills and match simulation."
with several new recruits making an immediate impact
Former East Keilor players Dion Hill and Zen Christofi have set high standards in both skill drills and endurance running
while ex-Western Bulldogs star Lin Jong has brought invaluable experience and professionalism to the playing group
former Bundoora ruck Mitch Antonello has impressed with his dedication to improving fitness
"It has also been fantastic to welcome back multiple premiership-winning former Deer Park players Lachlan Smart
Their experience and leadership as elite one-point players will be a great asset to the team
Captain Spiros Amarantidis has continued to lead by example
winning the 2km time trials and setting the benchmark for effort and commitment
and Kier Bol have also excelled in both fitness and skills training
contributing to a highly competitive and driven squad
"We also have eight players on VFL lists including recruits
Nick Ebinger (Williamstown) and Massimo Raso (Richmond)."
"Zen Christofi will add youth and speed as an inside midfielder after joining us from East Keilor where he won the best and fairest in 2024
Dion Hill is a versatile key position and midfield player who will add strength and experience and play multiple roles throughout the season
Lin Jong will also add experience and class
Mitch Antonello is an excellent tap ruck and overhead mark."
"Building on the experiences from our first season in Premier Division last year
we want to improve upon our seven wins and be competitive in all games throughout the season with the aim to make the top five and play finals for the first time in the EDFL Premier Division."
Nathan Burfitt and his Dad George Burfitt who volunteer for multiple roles at the club
Player most likely to become a coach one day
Who’s one opposition player you’d love on your side
What match are you most looking forward to in 2025 and why
Round 1 against Keilor away as they are still the benchmark of the competition and it will give us an indication of where we are at for season 2025
Daniel Marin (Port Melbourne Colts Masters)
Deer Park will enter its second season in the top flight after finishing seventh in 2024
There were a number of key departures from the 2023 premiership side and it showed with some inconsistencies throughout the season and in games
but it was overall a competitive first season across the board
The Lions set about filling those holes bringing back one-pointers in Lachie Smart
as well as adding former AFL players Lin Jong and Trent McKenzie
but the depth of the squad should be stronger to iron out any consistency issues
Deer Park will no doubt be in the mix for a finals position come the end of the season
but it will be a competitive race for the top five

We’re removing the dangerous and congested level crossing at Mt Derrimut Road by elevating the rail line over the road and building a brand new Deer Park Station and bus interchange.
After thorough planning and technical investigations, as well as community consultation, the final designs maximise active transport links and improve connections for the Deer Park community.
The accessible new hub combines different modes of transport including bus, train, car, pedestrian and bike within one precinct, allowing passengers to easily and safely connect to Melbourne’s CBD, surrounding suburbs and regional areas.
We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wurundjeri Woiwurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation and thank them for their collaboration on the Deer Park Station and precinct design.
The level crossing will be gone and the new Deer Park Station open by 2024.

The new Deer Park Station has been nominated for an Australasian Rail Industry sustainability award thanks to the environmentally focused design of the project.
The elevated station was built during the removal of the level crossing at nearby Mt Derrimut Road in 2023.
When it opened it was the first station to use structural concrete made with recycled plastic, which reduced the carbon footprint of the concrete by 40%.
A further 300 tonnes of carbon have also been saved every year thanks to hundreds of solar panels on the station’s new bus shelters, which help provide an alternative energy source to power the precinct.
Cooling features were also included in the new station precinct to help reduce heat and create a cooler suburb for locals with more than 500 new and upgraded car parks sealed with CoolSeal, a sealing agent that reduces the heat generated by asphalt surfaces and helps to reduce temperatures.
The precinct also includes Victoria’s first roof top garden on a station building and more than 50,000 new trees, shrubs and grasses were planted across the station precinct.
Deer Park Station has become one of the most sustainable new station precincts in Australia and has set the standard for carbon reduction for generations to come.
The new station precinct includes lift access to both platforms, an air-conditioned waiting room, new station forecourt, bus interchange and new and upgraded car parks, making it easier than ever for locals to access public transport.
The Mt Derrimut Road boom gates were down for up to 60% of the morning peak and caused traffic chaos for more than 23,000 vehicles that passed through every day.
It was the 68th level crossing removed for good, with 80 now consigned to history across Melbourne’s suburbs. In total 110 level crossings will go by 2030, easing congestion and improving safety on local roads.
Keilor is through to the Bowls Victoria weekend pennant
section 1 grand final after a stunning win against Werribee on Sunday
After having to wait a week to find out their preliminary final opponent
the Bulls faced Werribee on Sunday with a spot in the grand final against Bacchus Marsh on the line
Not much had separated the two sides all season
but on this occasion the Bulls were too strong
Keilor president Joe Watkins was ecstatic to win through to the decider
“It’s something that we have worked for,” he said
“We have got to the big dance and we have another hard day’s work ahead of us.”
Watkins said they led for much of the day against the Bees but were never able to really get away completely
you expect that they will continue to fight
“It was always around the 20 shot mark,” he said
“They came towards the middle but we were able to bring it home
“There were a lot of Keilor supporters down there and they were like another player
“It’s always good to hear the crowd after throwing down a decent bowl
Watkins said they had a lot of contributors across the board
The Bulls will now face Bacchus Marsh in the grand final on Saturday
Watkins said it would be another challenge for them
“They have been there for a number of years,” he said
“We have to equal what they throw at us and give back a little more from Keilor.”
It was a good weekend for Keilor with its fourth side beating Glenroy to win through to a grand final this weekend
Its second side won its grand final and has earned promotion and will play off in divisional finals this weekend
Deer Park’s hopes of a third straight premier division title remain alive despite a scare
the Parkers have had to make the grand final the hard way after losing a semi final
the Parkers fell short against Yarraville Footscray which won through to its first ever premier division grand final
Lee Schraner was the winning skip for Deer Park
with Mark Casey’s rink having an 18-all draw
It meant the Parkers had to beat Melbourne on Sunday in the preliminary final to match the grand final
The Parkers started the better of the sides and led by seven shots half way through the match up
Melbourne fought back and scores were level after 51 ends
with Melbourne taking a five shot lead at one point
The Parkers’ experience shone through and they managed to take the lead back in the 67th end
It was back and forth for a while before the Parkers again took the lead
the Parkers did enough to win 83 (14)-77 (4)
It means the Parkers will face Yarraville Footscray in the grand final on Sunday at Moonee Ponds
A Deer Park house was extensively damaged in a fire early on Tuesday morning

The Animal Legal Defense Fund and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) filed a lawsuit against Pymatuning Deer Park
February 2021 Update: Thanks to the Animal Legal Defense Fund lawsuit, eight animals have been moved out of Pymatuning. Learn more about the rescue
In April 2021, the Animal Legal Defense Fund and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) filed a lawsuit against Pymatuning Deer Park, a roadside zoo in Jamestown
By repeatedly failing to provide proper care and conditions for animals protected under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), the lawsuit asserts, Pymatuning Deer Park is violating federal law. Additionally, the roadside zoo’s inhumane treatment of captive wild animals — including those whose species aren’t protected by the ESA
such as an aging black bear named Bosco kept by the roadside zoo in a concrete pit — amounts to a public nuisance in violation of Pennsylvania state law
animals including lions and a tiger — both protected species under the ESA — receive inadequate veterinary care and nutrition
who was denied adequate veterinary care for his declining condition believed to be caused by renal failure
The incident was egregious enough for the federal inspectors charged with monitoring the zoo to warn against the roadside zoo’s failure to provide timely veterinary care as well as further use of gunshot for euthanasia
which can cause stress to the animals housed near the euthanized animal and as well as result in missed shots and injuries to the animal being killed
The American Veterinary Medical Association’s guidelines specify that killing an animal by gunshot is only acceptable in an emergency and should be avoided as a method of euthanasia when other options are available
are kept by the facility in an enclosure that is too small to allow for proper cleaning and lacks species-appropriate enrichment opportunities
A protected military macaw is kept in a small cage lacking proper opportunities for enrichment for the highly intelligent bird
And a protected Mikado pheasant is forced to live in a nearly barren enclosure
standing in stark contrast to the dense bamboo forests the species would inhabit in the wild
Several animals have already died since the Animal Legal Defense Fund sent its notice of intent to sue
A protected black-and-white ruffed lemur named Lola
who was made to live in isolation despite being a member of a highly social species
was killed in a fire at the roadside zoo in February 2021
The tragedy of these animals’ deaths is compounded by the fact that the Animal Legal Defense Fund and PETA had offered to facilitate the transfer of every animal at the roadside zoo to reputable sanctuaries as part of the December 2020 notice of intent letter
who would roam great distances in the wild
are kept in too-small enclosures that fail to meet their significant enrichment needs and prevent them from engaging in natural behaviors
The roadside zoo’s failure to provide appropriate conditions causes significant stress for the animals in its care
some of whom have been observed engaging in stereotypic behaviors such as pacing repeatedly and spinning in circles
Pymatuning Deer Park’s mistreatment of animals — including bears
and birds — constitutes a public nuisance that violates Pennsylvania law
the roadside zoo has placed young animals such as kangaroo joeys and bear cubs on public display
separating them from their mothers before they would naturally be weaned
And its “Budgie Barn” attraction puts approximately 100 parakeets in dangerously close contact with the public
allowing visitors to feed and interact with the fragile birds without staff supervision
Pymatuning Deer Park has previously been cited by the U.S
the agency tasked with enforcing the federal Animal Welfare Act
for violations including failure to provide adequate veterinary care; failure to provide properly prepared and nutritious food; failure to employ an adequate number of staff members; and failure to provide sanitary
the USDA has repeatedly cited the roadside zoo for issues related to its bear enclosure
a concrete pit that lacks sufficient enrichment opportunities
prevents Bosco from engaging in species-appropriate behaviors
and fails to even provide him with soft bedding to rest in — an especially egregious situation because he is showing signs of arthritis
for causing captive wild animals to suffer due to substandard care and nutrition
and insufficient social and enrichment opportunities
Pymatuning Deer Park and its operator are being sued for violating the federal Endangered Species Act — which offers protections for certain wild species
and Mikado pheasant kept by the roadside zoo — as well as Pennsylvania state laws
Enabled by weak enforcement of federal animal protection laws and a patchwork of wildly varying state laws on captive wildlife possession
countless inhumane roadside zoos have cropped up across the U.S
These facilities are frequently marked by inadequate care and conditions
and the animals kept in them often suffer greatly
The Animal Legal Defense Fund is committed to using the power of the legal system to protect captive wild animals from cruelty and ensure that the laws intended to protect them are properly enforced

police and paramedics responded to a “large” tree branch that fell onto the street near St
The branch struck a woman and a 10-year-old girl near St
One person was in hospital after a tree branch fell onto the street in Toronto’s Deer Park area on Tuesday
Just after 3:20 p.m., police and paramedics responded to a “large” tree branch that fell onto the street near St. Clair Avenue West and Avenue Road, officers said in a post on X
The branch struck a woman and a 10 year-old-girl
Paramedics said a female in her 30s was taken to hospital with serious and potentially life-threatening injuries
By Wednesday afternoon the woman’s injuries had been downgraded to non-life-threatening
The girl did not sustain any physical injuries
Investigators said they are probing whether weather was a factor in the incident, as Toronto and the GTA are under a severe thunderstorm watch with a risk of high winds and large hail
“It is too early to determine why the tree branch fell,” police said in an email Tuesday
Urban Forestry staff from the City of Toronto responded to the fallen tree and were in the process of cleaning up the branch debris on Tuesday evening
Crews are also assessing if additional work is required on the tree
adding that their focus is on addressing immediate hazards for public safety
“We take this evolving situation very seriously and ask members of the public to report hazardous trees and branches to 311 to help ensure staff can investigate and remove hazards for the safety of all,” Baker said
Clair Avenue West was closed between Deer Park Crescent and Avenue Road

someone in a white SUV drove it through a chain-link fence and straight into the above-ground valve structure of an Energy Transfer Company liquefied-natural-gas underground pipeline in the city of Deer Park
it released the several hundred pounds per square inch of pressure that was keeping the material liquid along the miles of pipe that led to the valve
and spewed out a column of white vapour that immediately caught fire
The resulting flame towered a hundred feet or more in the air and produced a plume of black smoke that could be seen for miles. The fire burned for four days, from Monday to Thursday, and was so big that International Space Station astronaut Don Pettit could see it from space and sent a photo down to prove it
Residents of the now somewhat ironically named Deer Park are no strangers to petrochemical disasters
Living in one of the most concentrated areas of oil refining and petrochemical production in the world has both advantages and disadvantages
Some of the advantages are that there are usually plenty of good
stable jobs for people who are willing to work hard and take risks
and the city's tax base is jet-propelled by billions of dollars invested in plants and equipment
Some of the disadvantages are that you live in an atmosphere that is never entirely free of chemicals that may have long-term health risks
and sometimes things happen that pose more immediate dangers
a fire that melts the interior of the car that you had to abandon during an evacuation
Partly to avoid insurance costs that would bankrupt any business
the refinery and petrochemical industries are some of the most safety-conscious in the world
I was once privileged to take a tour inside a working refinery
after viewing them from afar for most of my growing-up life in Texas
I had to sit through an hour-long series of training videos
all they did was load us on a bus and drive us through the place
But despite the best safety precautions human minds can devise
other human minds can come up with ways to thwart them
A friend of mine who lived and worked in Deer Park for many years has told me that the accident happened in a large right-of-way that carries many pipelines interconnecting the various plants in the Deer Park and La Porte area
A video captured at the time of the accident shows the SUV in question travelling well above the speed limit and steering straight for the valve assembly
Although the body recovered from the wreckage of the truck has not yet been publicly identified
reasonable speculation is that it is a case of suicide committed by someone who might have had inside knowledge of which valve to hit
Although terrorism isn't suspected by the authorities
the investigation is too new to have produced much in the way of firm results
Some residents of the area have called for additional protection for vulnerable pipeline infrastructure
It would take something pretty substantial
to prevent a similar intentional attack with a heavy vehicle
and there are plenty of vulnerable pipeline stations scattered around Texas and the rest of the country
If this was simply a spectacular way for an isolated individual to commit suicide
it is likely not to be repeated any time soon
and the idea of passing regulations to make all pipeline systems proof against such attacks might be judged excessive
the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States showed what a malevolent organisation can do with people who are willing to give their lives for a cause
the destruction caused by this particular fire was relatively small
and probably would not have appealed to a terrorist bent on causing death and destruction
and any toxic products of the fire were carried far aloft
it was a major inconvenience while it lasted
and if it had happened closer to a more populated area
the consequences could have been much worse
But few of the people holding those opinions have lived in a place where one's father and perhaps grandfather have made a good living from fossil-fuel-related work
and chose to end that time in a spectacular way that ended one life and endangered others
We should do what we can to keep things like this from happening again
But just as important is creating a cultural environment in which the average person can do remunerative work and feel that the rest of the world
appreciates what one does instead of wishing it would all just go away
What are your thoughts on the petrochemical industry

School district members sang the praises of Regan’s character and her decades-long work in the district ahead of the board’s unanimous approval of her appointment during a meeting Monday evening
The Deer Park Independent School District unanimously approved Tiffany Regan’s appointment as superintendent following a local pastor’s continued condemnation of her sexual orientation
School district members sang their praises of Regan’s character and her decades-long work in the district ahead of the board’s unanimous approval of her appointment during a meeting Monday evening
RELATED: Deer Park church pastor faces backlash after attacking sexuality of DPISD superintendent finalist
One dissenting voice — Central Baptist Church Pastor Doug Harris — made a final push in his vow to be the “tip of the spear” in efforts to prevent Regan’s appointment
“When we’re looking at principles
we line our principles up with the authority of God’s word
what does God actually say about morality and about life,” Harris said
“The difficulty is when we find ourselves having to compromise on a principle to be able to accommodate a person.”
Harris’ remarks come after the pastor drew attention last month for condemning Regan’s sexuality during a March 16 sermon
when he said his comments were not intended to “destroy” Regan
He said he hoped his words would encourage her to repent of her sins and “get some things right.”
More than 30 Texas pastors and bishops signed a letter defending Harris’s words against Regan
They said her lifestyle conflicts with “the moral character needed for such a vital leadership role over children’s education.”
Regan cannot separate her worldview and deeply embedded sexual identity from her actions,” they wrote in a letter signed by the Texas Pastor Council
“Our concern is that the profoundly disturbing pattern of the LGBTQ+ to push that agenda on our children is simply irrefutable.”
Harris asserted that rejecting her position would reflect Deer Park’s conservative Christian community
many of those community members instead rejected his beliefs
District staffers and friends of the superintendent-elect turned out to the board meeting to certify her appointment
with several wearing shirts reading “I stand with Dr
“I realized early on that Tiffany had exactly what it took to be a teacher,” Diane Gordon
a team player and she was definitely a game changer
Her agenda has always been and only been the success of our students in this district.”
An online petition rejecting discrimination and the pastor’s comments received more than 2,300 signatures. Supporters in the petition comments recounted Regan's history in the school district and her unwavering commitment to students. The petition called on the pastor to issue an apology. Instead, he doubled down on his comments by posting videos about Regan on social media
said on Monday that the process for selecting a superintendent was nondiscriminatory and followed a regular process that complies with state law
“While many have supported the board’s decision to this point
there are some that have raised concern about the personal background or perceived lifestyle of the selected finalist,” Cable said on Monday
our employment decisions at Deer Park ISD are made and always will be made on the qualifications
not on personal characteristics or identity
We uphold our values and we remain committed to fairness and excellence in every decision.”

NOIDA: The Noida authority on Tuesday said that it has decided to rope in two expert consultants to help in developing two projects -- Deer Park and Sunset Safari –in the city’s Sector 91 park for recreational purposes of the residents
The Deer Park is envisioned as a mini-zoo in compliance with CZA norms and will house 132 deer from 10 species
(Sunil Ghosh/HT Photo) The authority has invited proposals from interested consultants to finalise a qualified expert
“We have decided to develop a Deer Park and Sunset Safari in a phased manner as per the rules
who will be engaged in the task,” said Noida authority chief executive officer Lokesh M
The authority has decided to undertake this project after approval from the Central Zoo Authority (CZA)
The authority intends to develop a Deer Park
and Sunset Safari within the Biodiversity Park of Sector-91
the park is set to be the first facility of its kind in Gautam Budh Nagar district
offering visitors a unique opportunity to observe deer and waterbirds in a natural setting illuminated by spectrum lighting—a technology that mimics darkness for animals while providing clear visibility to humans
the Deer Park project was approved by the Noida Authority Board in June 2024
Officials have now confirmed that the detailed project report (DPR) will soon be prepared under the guidance of a retired district forest officer (DFO)
“We want the expertise of experienced forest officers to ensure the project meets all wildlife norms,” the CEO said
“The Deer Park is envisioned as a mini-zoo in compliance with CZA norms and will house 132 deer from 10 species
Among these are species sourced from zoos in Lucknow
as well as African antelope species like the Springbok
rescued deer from the Noida airport area will also be shifted to the facility,” said a Noida authority official aware of the development
Officials also said that another rescue centre is being developed near the Dhanauri Wetland

DEER PARK, Texas – A newly released report is shedding some haunting light on last year’s deadly chemical release at the PEMEX plant in Deer Park
Back in October 2024
two people were killed and 35 other people were treated for hydrogen sulfide
which also sparked a shelter-in-place order and shut down sections of Highway 225
CLOSER LOOK: Deer Park’s emergency alert system failed during deadly PEMEX gas leak; here’s what we know
While the investigation into how everything unfolded is still ongoing, the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) shared an update about the two workers who were killed trying to escape moments after they opened the wrong portion of a pipe holding the deadly gas
“Wearing supplied-air respirators and without personal hydrogen sulfide gas detectors
the two Repcon boilermakers may have been unaware of a hydrogen sulfide leak,” the report noted
workers have filed lawsuits against the oil refinery for injuries suffered and the CSB has continued investigating what happened
“This is a very serious incident that caused multiple fatalities and injuries and potentially put the surrounding community at risk,” CSB Chairperson Steve Owens said back in October.

In the CSB’s recently released investigative report
it’s revealed that the two workers who died from the gas leak were about 250 feet away from the release moments before the leak
“The two boilermakers disconnected their supplied air connections to flee from the area,” the report read
“One boilermaker turned the valve to engage air flow from his escape cylinder and proceeded down a nearby ladder to the primary assembly point
The other boilermaker collapsed near the top of the ladder and was found by emergency responders with his respirator mask lying next to him
fatally injured from hydrogen sulfide poisoning.”
The report went on to note “PEMEX Deer Park did not require the ISC workers to wear respiratory protection for their permitted work
and they did not have escape respirators.”
CSB concluded its update noting the investigation remains ongoing and are working to gather additional facts and analyze several key areas including “safe work practices
turnaround and maintenance policies and procedures.”

Deer Park ISD’s new Superintendent Tiffany Regan said Monday that she hopes families will focus on her vision for the district that she has loved since she was a child
Regan told the Chronicle in an exclusive interview Monday that she is both excited and nervous to be confirmed as the southeast Harris County district’s next leader
following a month of highlights and low points that started when she was announced as the lone finalist in mid-March

it's difficult when people you've never met or don't know your work make negative comments
But it's also wonderful to hear students you taught 30 years ago and people who you've grown up with make positive comments,” Regan said

Pastor Douglas Harris has been campaigning against Regan as the board’s pick to replace Superintendent Stephen Harrell
starting with making hateful comments about her sexuality in a sermon at Central Baptist Church
He doubled down over email and texts to some trustees and in an appearance at Monday's board meeting
"The reality is we are seeing this all throughout our nation right now
especially on this issue of morality and human sexuality
and we're seeing the damaging effect all across our nation today
because compromise took place in small increments at certain points," Harris said Monday
we are no longer the conservative Christian community that we pride ourselves in."
The Texas Pastor Council's leadership also wrote a letter supporting Harris' opposition to Regan
But opposition was quickly drowned out by ensuing support
a petition was created by community members that has since garnered 2,361 signatures
While Regan said she never expected her personal life to be scrutinized like this
noting that her personal life does not affect her professional capacities
she said she received support from every corner of the district
messages from kids who I taught when they were 7 years old
who are grown now and people from all stages of life,” Regan said
“I'm going to need their support all through the job
This was evident at Monday’s regular board meeting
Beside the current and retired teachers who knew Regan vouching for her candidacy
another area pastor came to share an opposing viewpoint from the one that Harris has megaphoned
Deer Park United Methodist Church Pastor John Black said Jesus did not care one way or another about sexuality
VOUCHERS: Do Houston’s private schools have the space to take students on vouchers? Some say yes.
"I'm aware that some folks in our community have raised issues because of her sexual orientation
they have tried to cloak their objections by saying this is something that Jesus is in favor of
I want to be very clear that is not the voice of the gospel
the God most people believe in thinks about what Jesus talked about," Black said
for checking on credentials and making sure that the most important thing around this area is not who somebody loves or what other people think
but about what's best for our kids ..
Thank you for not letting fear run the day."
Black said during the closed session discussion that he had actually received a letter from Harris asking him to support the campaign before Regan's lone finalist announcement
and although Black doesn't know Regan personally
he said people in his congregation had been asking him for his thoughts and he felt he had to speak out
"I can't stand the idea that somebody gets to blame Jesus for their ignorance," Black said
"That's not the way I understand Jesus."
Houston Educators Association President Michelle Williams came from Houston ISD to urge the board to vote for Regan
warning the board of what could happen if the community did not support a superintendent

a majority Hispanic district that has generally above-average student achievement scores
People that all come together and rally behind one of their own
and Tiffany's one of our own," Harrell said
One of Harris’ main concerns about Regan was that she would push a “woke” agenda or encourage more people to become LGBTQ+ somehow
“It is actually specifically against the law,” Regan said of “woke” curricula
“My intention is for us to teach the curriculum
which is legislated to the best of our ability
so that our students are prepared completely
and they're well rounded and ready for whatever their next challenge is post-secondary."
Board President Cable also went over the district's instructional material selection process at Monday's meeting to dispel rumors
"Instructional materials are not influenced by anyone's individual
including those of a superintendent," Cable said

spoke at the board meeting on a similar theme
in a tearful speech that earned a standing ovation
"My mother has always instilled within me
from the moment that I can understand that God has a plan
and that this plan is so much bigger and so much greater and so much better than anything that I could ever imagine
I was the first person that my mother called when she was named the lone finalist position
and I had the privilege of telling my mother what she has told me for the past 19 years of my life
that God's plan is so much greater and bigger and better than anything that I could ever imagine
and that God is using her as an instrument at this point
exactly how he wants to use her," Regan said
Cable reiterated that to not hire Regan because of her identity would be against the law
our employment decisions at Deer Park ISD are made and always will be made on the qualifications
and we remain committed to fairness and excellence in every decision," Cable said
He also said that the process of selecting her was rigorous
narrowing down from 26 applications to 14 and then to one

DYSLEXIA: More Texas children are being identified with dyslexia than ever before — and so are their parents
Regan recounted some of the vision she has for the district in an interview at her office just hours before the announcement that she would be the next leader
"Instruction is my passion," Regan said
and something she has already impacted in just one year in charge of curriculum for the district
Deer Park ISD boasts one of the higher rates of dyslexia identification of Houston-area districts
and Regan said she and her team have made reading a priority for Deer Park ISD’s 12,162 students
They will begin a new Kindergarten through 4th grade reading curriculum this fall called “Reading Horizons,” which will be a hands-on and phonics-focused curriculum
And so we started visiting other districts and like
And how are your kids responding?’ And doing a deep dive
I think our students are going to respond really well.”

She also hopes to involve both community members and students in her leadership
creating a community advisory group to meet with her and conduct themed “learning walks” through schools monthly to discuss what is and isn’t working
She also wants to create an “honorary board member” position for a student to expand the reach of young voices beyond just the superintendent’s student advisory group
She wants students to interact with the board
One thing she said she hopes to continue is the current administration's career-and-technical education
including co-op’s offered to high schoolers who have completed their mandatory credits and partnerships with institutions of higher education like the San Jacinto Promise program that trains future teachers

And I think I've always kind of held tightly to that
we created an enrichment program that really worked on real world experiences for our eighth graders
and had a lot of community partners and community help,” Regan said
“(It) opened my eyes to the wider world of instruction for our kids
I would very much like for that mission to be held on to tightly”
Regan is also the founder of the Paige Project
a nonprofit dedicated to helping kids in Deer Park ISD who have cancer or life-threatening illnesses
Regan has helped raise $400,000 to help 22 Deer Park ISD students
This year a middle schooler named Roman will be the beneficiary of The Paige Project’s family day on May 3
auctions and a cooking competition with barbecue sandwiches
Regan also started a basketball club while she was the longest-serving principal in Deer Park Junior High School history
with a 15-year tenure before moving to central office
She used to coach basketball at the school and started a club for students who wanted to play basketball and were either too young or didn’t make the team
She has a photo in her office of four of the members
some of whom have gone on to play basketball at college in the U.S
in hopefully no less than 10 years she said
she will be remembered as a leader who “truly cared about the kids
That they were at the forefront of the decisions that I made
and that I took the time to listen and consider their needs.”
Harrell said the district is in good hands with his successor
"There's nobody as passionate as she is about helping the kids be successful
and she's proved to herself time after time they don't have anything to worry about
This district is going to be in great shape for the future," Harrell said
