New designs for stage 2 of the Yan Yean Road upgrade have been revealed with a focus on improving access to the Doreen Commercial Precinct following community feedback.
The re-design includes the installation of traffic lights at the intersection of Yan Yean Road and Activity Way, as well as retaining existing access to businesses on the corner of Yan Yean and Bridge Inn roads.
The upgrade will also feature new dedicated turning lanes, on-street parking, two new bus stops, and a signalised pedestrian crossing to improve safety and public transport access.
MRPV program director Brendan Pauwels said the redefined plan balances road efficiency with community needs.
“Installing traffic lights at the intersection of Yan Yean Road and Activity Way and retaining the existing entrance to businesses on the corner of the intersection will give residents and business owners even greater access to this area,” he said.
“We have worked with the local community and made the necessary adjustments to ensure this project benefits everyone.”
Business precinct representative Tony Casey welcomed the changes.
“We’ve had constructive discussions with MRPV, and based on the updated road design, which provides entry and exit to the Doreen Commercial Precinct, we’ve been able to collaborate effectively to achieve the best possible outcome for both the business community and the road upgrade,” he said.
Construction on the upgrade is expected to commence in late 2025.

A new playground and splash park precinct will soon come to Hill Top Park in Doreen
City of Whittlesea Chief Executive Craig Lloyd joined Member for McEwen Rob Mitchell and Member for Yan Yean Lauren Kathage to officially turn the first sod of the project earlier this month
The Federal Government provided $1.5 million from its Investing in Our Communities Program
while the State Government provided $500,000 from its Open Space for Everyone – Better Parks and Playgrounds Program
The park will feature a splash pad with jets
along with a playground including multiple slides
Nature play will be encouraged through the inclusion of logs
and upgraded car park will help make visits more comfortable for users
New public toilets will be built on the site
including a Changing Places facility to cater for people with higher needs
Mr Lloyd said the playground and splash park’s design had been informed by more than 700 submissions during two community consultation phases
“Council is committed to providing residents of all ages and abilities with quality recreation spaces so they can enjoy active
Mr Mitchell said he was thrilled to be delivering on this commitment for McEwen
“We made a promise to fund this vital project for Doreen and we are getting on with that job
with [this month’s] start of works being a critical step forward,” he said
“It means that people aren’t leaving to go and do something on a hot day … there’s more elements
“It’s a prime example of where you’ve got three levels of government working together in the interest of the community first … we’re bringing outcomes that actually matter to people
This is something that everyone’s going to enjoy.”
Ms Kathage praised how the improved facility would change the community
“We’re about to see this place transformed into a family-friendly hotspot for the north,” she said
“It’s great to have something closer to home for people
so you don’t have to travel … to Mill Park or …
We’re going to have our very own regional play space and splash park.”
Construction is expected to begin in October 2024 and continue through until mid-2025

And my dog just licked my hand five times in a row
and personal growth are coming my way (though it could also indicate that I just had a BLT for breakfast)
To believe in angel numbers is to believe that there are divine messages hidden in every corner of the universe
a 31-year-old woman from Pennsylvania I recently spoke to
told me that angels recently tried to warn her about something bad happening to her
She woke up feeling unwell that morning at 4:11
which stands for stability and connecting with one’s intuition
getting into a car wreck on her morning commute
“taught me that I needed to listen to myself.”
The idea that numbers contain hidden messages is not necessarily new. Numerology has been around in some form since ancient Greece, when Pythagoras postulated that numbers such as “1” and “4” contained mystical properties. (He also thought all odd numbers were male, and all even numbers female.) But the term “angel numbers” has only been around since 2004, when Doreen Virtue
came up with the idea while sitting on her bathroom floor
because this stuff should be thrown down the toilet,” Virtue says when I reach her at her home in Washington state
and I’m sorry that I made them.” It was the mid-’90s
and she was a stay-at-home mom of two boys in Newport Beach
She often locked herself inside her bathroom to meditate in peace
she received a “download” that “angels were sending repeating numbers on receipts and telephone numbers
Virtue was already a well-established New Age teacher and author
She started her career as a psychotherapist treating patients with eating disorders
but quit in 1995 after surviving an attempted carjacking
She became convinced that angels had been with her during the ordeal
“I started to talk to people who’d had these weird
unexplainable experiences that went way beyond coincidence,” she says
“We all thought it was angel intervention.” She began writing about her experience with otherworldly entities
publishing oracle cards and books like Healing With the Angels and Angel Therapy
Her publisher loved her angel numbers idea
and she started drafting the meanings behind the numbers with her coauthor
with whom she had already written a previous book
(Brown did not respond to a request for comment.)
306-page glossary of the hidden meanings behind every three-digit number in existence
(Want to decipher four-digit-or-larger numbers
You’ll have to find a copy of the 2008 sequel
Angel Numbers 101.) Look at the clock; is it 7:08 a.m.
“God is telling you that you’re on the right path and reaping a great bounty of abundance,” Virtue and Brown write
and supported by the ascendant masters.” Mulling over a purchase of $77 pants
You’re on the right path mentally and physically.”
The book sold so well Virtue took her teachings on the road
lecturing to audiences around the world about angel numbers
She went on to publish more than 50 books and tarot card sets in 38 languages worldwide
“I was being treated like a rock star,” she says
“My husband and I were flown around the world first class
she genuinely believed she had received this information directly from the angels
and that what she was teaching her students was legitimate
“I thought the angels and their messages were real,” she says
“There was no trickery involved.” But she admits she had doubts
and the number 444 was a comfort to her,” she says
“She thought that meant her mom would live
It may be reassuring to think angels are with you
because the angels are going to do the work,’ or ‘the angels told me this is going to be okay’ — that’s false hope.” Sometimes
she’d consult angel numbers and cards to tell women to leave their partners
or to quit their jobs and move to Peru and become healers
Virtue regularly consulted angel numbers herself
using them to guide decisions that she says she now regrets
because she was “following the New Age teaching of ‘follow your heart
and maybe this time it’ll be different.’ It was all based on following the angel numbers that would say
“People told me they felt I was their spiritual mother
Her publisher cut ties with her and started refunding people who had bought her books
and Virtue offered refunds for her classes
and says she currently owes the IRS $2 million in back taxes from the year she was fired
She and her husband were forced to sell their home
leaving the Hawaii ranch for a smaller place in Washington state to care for their ailing parents; any residuals from her old books
“I’m not rich and famous from all this stuff
Virtue is a Christian YouTuber and regularly goes on podcasts warning people about things like manifesting and positive affirmations
believing that they breed “passivity” and “delusional” thought
“God gave us a whole range of emotions,” she says
and it’s not going to attract negative things into your life if you admit these things.” Teaching otherwise
Her audience and income are much smaller than they were at the height of her New Age fame
largely relying on Social Security and her husband’s income to get by
“I’m making in a year what I used to make in a week when I was in the New Age,” she says
Two years ago, she heard that angel numbers were going viral on platforms like TikTok, and she started making videos denouncing them, using Evangelical Christian vernacular to criticize those wearing 444 necklaces. Believing in angel numbers “means you don’t trust God with your future,” she says in one 2024 video filmed in front of her bookcase
wearing a simple cerulean tunic in lieu of the indigo-hued robes and beaded jewelry she wore in the 1990s
“You want to peek into the future to know if it’s gonna be okay
Trusting in the Lord is what we are called to do instead
as well as the other videos on Virtue’s channel
due to the immense amount of hateful feedback she gets from former acolytes
“People find comfort in this because they want this magical solution to problems
and you have to be responsible with your finances
These are things that people often don’t want to do
They’d rather have this fantasy that the angels are taking care of all this.”
Virtue’s efforts have done little to dissuade those on spiritual TikTok
some of her former students still make videos theorizing why she made the change of heart
hypothesizing that she was possessed by a demonic spirit or controlled by her husband or that she experienced a form of spiritual psychosis
(Virtue says none of that is true.) Many of these influencers point to the roots of numerology in ancient Greece to make sense of Virtue’s actions and justify the veracity of angel numbers
even if the woman who coined the term insists it’s bunk
“Angel numbers still hold value,” one popular influencer puts it in one of her videos
“The angels are still using those numbers to communicate with you regardless
even though the woman who coined the term doesn’t align with her anymore
She was just a vessel for them at one point in time.”
But most angel number devotees probably aren’t aware of Virtue’s role in coining them
or of the fact that she has since disavowed them
There is still a growing number of people who use them as a guide for making significant life decisions: Look at any number of sub-Reddits and you’ll see a woman fretting that her mother
may soon die because she’s seeing the number “69” everywhere; or a woman debating whether to stay with a boyfriend who has cheated on her because “the universe” is sending her repeated numbers like 888 and 666
the Pennsylvania woman who believes her failure to notice angel numbers led to her car crash
concedes part of Virtue’s argument when I raise it to her: “A lot of people use not just angel numbers but all woo-woo stuff to avoid responsibility,” she says
who has 888 (the symbol of abundance) tattooed on her forearm
maintains that numbers can be a conduit for divine spirits’ communication with us
“I do believe in a higher power and think the angels have something to do with it for me personally,” she says

United Airlines is making significant strides in the Asia-Pacific region
with a strong focus on partnerships and expanding connectivity across Australia and New Zealand
United Airlines’ senior vice president of worldwide sales
recently visited Sydney where she sat down to chat to Travel Weekly about the future of the airline in Australia
Doreen Burse knows a thing or too about the travel industry
She is United Airlines’ senior vice president of worldwide sales
a role she took on in March 2021 and oversees global sales strategy
and builds new partnerships to drive revenue
Burse had an impressive career in hospitality
most recently as vice president of Marriott’s global sales for the US and Canada
managing accounts representing US$16 billion (AU$23bn) in annual spending
Burse recently visited Australia to meet with trade partners
underscoring the importance of Australia in the airline’s growth strategy
“Being in the marketplace and spending time with clients
and our employees is the fastest way to have your finger on the pulse of what’s going on
but also to say thank you and get a sense of what’s going well,” Burse explains
highlighting the value of in-person connections
One of United’s most critical partnerships in the region is with Virgin Australia
which has bolstered United’s connectivity throughout Australia
has already seen tremendous growth and impact
and even hosting special events like Mardi Gras Pride flights
“The partnership with Virgin Australia is incredibly important
It provides deep connectivity throughout Australia
If you think about our connection from the US – San Francisco
the partnership allows for seamless travel across the country,” Burse said
United’s relationship with Air New Zealand is similarly strong
with the joint venture enabling enhanced connectivity across the Pacific
our joint venture partnership has been in place for quite some time
and it’s really crucial in connecting travellers on both sides of the Pacific,” she says
While United has a strong footprint with routes to Sydney
the airline is continuously evaluating expansion opportunities
As to discussions around the new Western Sydney Airport
United remains open to new possibilities while its codeshare partner
Singapore Airlines was recently announced as the first international carrier to fly out of WSI
Singapore Airlines first international carrier announced for Western Sydney Airport
“We’re always evaluating. We feel like we have great coverage getting into Australia, and through our partners, we can offer extensive connectivity across other cities,” Burse adds.
This expansion isn’t limited to Australia. While United’s transpacific network is 33 per cent larger this summer than last summer, its Asia-Pacific network larger than pre-COVID for the first time. United will also continue to increase services in Asia, including the relaunch of key routes like Hong Kong-Los Angeles and Tokyo-Cebu, as part of its broader Asia-Pacific growth strategy.
In addition to the launch of the Cebu route, United is implementing several seasonal changes to its flight schedules. Starting from December 3, 2024, the Brisbane to San Francisco route will operate daily and United will introduce a second flight on the Sydney to San Francisco route, operating three times a week beginning December 24, 2024.
The Melbourne to Los Angeles route will also see a significant increase in frequency, shifting to daily service starting December 4, 2024. Additionally, the Sydney to Houston route is set to restart on October 29, 2024, initially offering three flights per week and transitioning to daily service by December 20, 2024.
United remains focused on delivering superior customer experiences, expanding routes, and investing in technology and sustainability. With a strong foundation in partnerships across Australia, New Zealand, and Asia, the airline is well-positioned to meet the demands of a rapidly changing travel landscape.
As part of its ambitious United Next growth plan, United Airlines is set to revolutionise its fleet by taking delivery of approximately 100 new aircraft each year for the next five years.
This substantial investment is not just about increasing the number of planes; it reflects United’s commitment to enhancing the travel experience for its passengers and improving operational efficiency. The new aircraft will feature the latest in passenger comfort and technology, including modern cabin designs, advanced entertainment systems, and improved fuel efficiency.
“We believe that people love to travel and be together in person, and we’re committed to making that experience as seamless and enjoyable as possible,” Burse concludes. “It’s an exciting time to be in the airline industry, and we’re proud of the work we’re doing, not just for United, but for our passengers and partners around the world.”
As the airline industry faces mounting pressure to address its environmental impact, United has emerged as a leader in sustainable aviation practices. The company is one of the largest buyers of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and has made significant investments in emerging technologies aimed at reducing carbon emissions.
“Sustainability is such a top-of-mind issue right now,” Burse says. “United has been involved in sustainable aviation fuel for over a decade, and it’s the fastest way to decarbonise air travel.
“We’re also focused on investments in carbon sequestration, hydrogen planes, and electric taxis to ensure we meet our goal of being carbon-neutral by 2050.”
In 2023, United Airlines took a significant step towards sustainability by leading the formation of the UAV Sustainable Flight FundSM (SFF).
This multi-million dollar venture capital fund is designed to accelerate the development and adoption of SAF alongside 21 partner organisations, including other airlines, finance and energy companies, marking one of the industry’s largest collective efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
The UAV Sustainable Flight Fund aims to increase the availability of SAF, which currently represents only a fraction of the fuel used by airlines globally, despite being key to achieving net-zero emissions goals by 2050. Through this fund, United and its partners are investing in start-ups and innovative companies focused on producing SAF, as well as exploring other decarbonisation technologies.
In addition to its commitment to SAF, United allows individual travelers to contribute to sustainability efforts through the airline’s Sustainable Flight Fund. To date, more than 110,000 passengers have donated at least $1 towards this initiative, showcasing growing customer support for environmentally conscious travel options.
Another area where United is leading the industry is in its embrace of new technologies. In a significant development, United recently announced a partnership with Starlink to bring free in-flight Wi-Fi across its fleet starting in 2025. The airline plans to roll out this service on all flights, offering passengers faster, more reliable internet access.
“We spent a lot of time testing out the technology, and now we’re ready to roll it out fleet-wide. It will be free for all passengers, regardless of where they’re seated,” Burse said. United is also investing heavily in its app, which integrates with in-flight Wi-Fi to provide real-time updates on everything from baggage tracking to navigating connecting airports.
As United Airlines continues to grow its presence across the Asia-Pacific region, travelers and industry partners alike can look forward to enhanced connectivity, improved in-flight services, and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

A large fire is a dynamic environment where anything can happen
Lieutenant Robert Bury was the strike team leader of Strike Team 1425 at the Bunyip fires
This is his story about how they helped an injured woman
As the strike team leader on night shift
I want to compliment the professionalism of the firefighters who helped an injured member of the public in an active fire area at about 3am.
While attempting to rescue four horses from the fire
a woman was kicked in the head by a distressed horse
She fell from the back of the truck and received a severe head injury
Doreen Fire Brigade's ultralight, which had been tasked with escorting the horse truck
Firefighters Andrew Connell and Leigh McDonald assessed the situation and provided immediate first aid
They contacted the strike team command car
the Doreen field command vehicle (FCV)
and CFA members Michael Harding and Jarrod Middleton also helped the woman
Communications at this location were poor but eventually the requested ambulance arrived escorted by the Doreen ultralight
We were fortunate to have the assistance of two skilled nurses who were crewing other trucks in the area
plus Strike Team Leader Daniel May and firefighters Josh Finlayson and Rohan Rizzoli who heard the radio transmissions and came to help
Meanwhile the four other ultralight crews that formed Strike Team 1425 continued to provide asset protection in the sector
The injured woman was transported by road to the Alfred Hospital
Firefighters are used to turning chaos into calm
but this was an unexpected situation. Well done to all involved

Great Grandmother of 36 and Great Great Grandmother of 2
Funeral service to be held on Thursday 14 November at 10.30am Lester & Sons Chapel in Wodonga
Doreen’s Laura Paeglis received her first bow from her grandpa who told her at the time she would one day go to the Olympics
Now the 22-year-old has embarked on her grandpa’s words
and made her debut at the 2024 Olympic Games Paris
taking on archery in the Women’s Individual alongside debutant Peter Boukouvalas in the Men’s Individual
The 2024 Olympic Games Paris is the 14th consecutive Games in which Australia will compete in archery
and while Australian men have competed since the sport returned at Munich in 1972
it will be the 12th appearance for Australian women
Paeglis has fired many arrows to reach the Olympics
securing her spot in Paris after being part of the 2023 Pacific Games team that won four gold medals in the Solomon Islands
After missing out on the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo
“It feels amazing to be selected for my first Olympics
This has been a dream of mine for a long time
and to be selected is just the best feeling in the world,” she said
after so many years of training and fighting towards this goal
“I want to thank everyone who helped get me here
and both my siblings have always been so supportive
They’ve all just been so amazing through this whole experience.”
Paeglis represented Australia at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires in 2018
Paeglis started her Olympic journey on July 25 during the Women’s Individual ranking round
recording the highest score by an Australian woman in Olympic archery in nearly 30 years
With a score of 640 from her 72 arrows in the round
and is now set to take on France’s Caroline Lopez in the 1/32 ranking round
Paeglis and Boukouvalas won’t feature in the knockout rounds in the Mixed Doubles
as their combined score was not high enough to qualify

Doreen Simson reflects on her life-changing journey from London to the countryside of Borth during WW2. As a young evacuee, she found a new home and family, shaping her future and career.
Doreen Simson had only ever known thick city smog and the hustle and bustle of London until she took a train journey aged four that changed her life forever.
Leaving London amidst the terrors of WW2, this train journey transformed Doreen from an innocent child into an evacuee overnight.
As the 80th anniversary of VE Day approaches, Doreen has been reflecting on her experiences growing up in the countryside with a family that took her in like their own, and regard her as a member of the family to this day.
These figures were Lucy Matthews’ grandmother and great grandmother who, after coming across a crying four-year old Doreen at the evacuee collection point, welcomed her into a life so different from the one she had in the city she had grown up in.
Doreen was one of the 800,000 children evacuated in 1941. She specifically remembers her mother Nell telling her to not leave her brother Dennis’ side, as they were greeted with ‘children holding jam jars full of water for us to drink’ shortly after arriving in Borth. But her brother was picked prior to her and Doreen remembers “crying so much”.
Speaking to Lucy, Doreen said: “My mum had told me to stay with my brother and within minutes of ending up in this new place, he had gone. That’s when your great grandmother Jean Sharpe came along, and I became a member of the family. She took a look at me, saw me crying and said ‘I’ll take this one’.”
Walks down country lanes with Mrs Sharpe were Doreen’s favourite.
“Those walks have played a huge part in helping me become the woman I am today, especially when it came to my career as a florist. I was the first in my family to take up floristry, and this originated from my time spent in Borth in the countryside.”
Doreen said the train journey back to London “is a blur”. “My brother greeted me at Paddington and the next thing I knew, I was being dragged down the stairs and into a house with a new baby. Some things had definitely changed during my time away.”
Nell and Jean never got the chance to meet, but Doreen knows how relieved her mother was for her to be taken into a family that continued to extend their affection towards Doreen later in life, even joining them in the family car for the funeral procession of Jean Sharpe, the woman who took in a distraught four-year old Doreen at the collection point.
“I just know that I was so lucky to be taken in by your great grandma,” Doreen added.
“My sister was one of the thousands of children that returned home due to mistreatment. Being a member of the evacuee association makes me realise my luck with the experiences I had across those four years.”

An innovative technique to effectively recycle roadways is being used for the Bridge Inn Road Upgrade in Doreen
which involves milling old roadway to rubble then mixing in foamed bitumen to produce a durable
has been employed by Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) to achieve widespread benefits
MRPV Director Dipal Sorathia stated that such benefits included the final product holding similar properties to that of asphalt
and a decrease in the use and reliance of new materials
“We’ve used foamed bitumen to build new traffic lanes on Bridge Inn Road as part of the Bridge Inn Road Upgrade,” he said
“The foamed bitumen process helps us build durable
flexible road pavements while improving sustainability outcomes and reducing construction times
but also the local communities and all the users of the roads we upgrade with foamed bitumen.”
the recycled product reduces waste being sent to landfill

MRPV is also using foamed bitumen on the Sunbury Road Upgrade and has previously employed the technique on the Golf Links Road Upgrade

She was inducted into the NDASA Hall of Fame in 1999
Her previous accomplishments were outstanding on their own

We were all shocked to find out her name was

She loved all of us as if we were her own and made each one of us feel like we were her favorite
She traveled many miles to cheer us on in our activities
We always knew when Aunt Digger was in the stands
We will miss her deep belly laugh and huge smile
We only hope to be half the person she was to us
Though she will be deeply missed by all of us on Earth
we find peace knowing she ran into the arms of Jesus at Heaven’s Gate with her same huge smile and bear hug

It was standing room only on March 12 as students
and staff crowded into the McIntosh Center for a lecture by Doreen St
and staff writer for The New Yorker (a position she has held since 2017 at just 25 years old)
In her regular contributions to that journal’s weekly column Critic’s Notebook
Félix explores subjects across the spectrum of contemporary culture — from what she called the “existential” nature of Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show
to Blake Lively and the collapse of the #MeToo era
to the complexities of the capitalization of the word “Black.”
The initiative is committed to bringing critical discourse to the story-telling fields
investigating the possibility of media arts as a place of accessibility
all while creating an informed public.
Félix’s talk began with a projected image of Charli XCX wearing a pink crop-top whose pink script read “They don’t build statues of critics.” Using this image as an example of the complex layering of semiotic meaning possible within images
as well as general lack of reverence for the critic
Félix discussed the role of the critic in Western culture; the idea of authority in relationship to criticism; and her own relationship to writing and criticism.
is realizing that so much of how we process things that we can understand
maybe even dilute to the level of fact is that we’re also processing our feeling or processing how a work of art or music or movie
And that’s fundamentally what I feel I do
how it maybe is slightly different from the other journalism work that you might be reading,” said St
she had a way of interacting with the world that was questioning; she loved music and magazines
and would tear out her favorite images to put in her room
It was then that she noticed that critics and reviewers were as interesting as the people they wrote about
And I think a lot of us here in this room today love those things too
we love living in a world that produces culture
whether we’ve done this consciously or subconsciously
and we think that this work tells us about ourselves,” said St

with the Bridge Inn Road Upgrade reopening a key link to homes
Bassetts Road reopened ahead of time on Wednesday 21 February after closing in October so crews could safely complete major works at its intersection with Bridge Inn Road
crews installed around 280 metres of kerbs and drainage and laid 75 tonnes of asphalt – roughly equivalent in weight to 37 dual-cab utes
the improvements at the intersection will include new traffic lights
kerbs and sections of walking and cycling paths
The improvements will be vital to the project’s aim of safer
more-reliable travel on Bridge Inn Road and improved access to Mernda’s train station and town centre
The Bridge Inn Road Upgrade is adding extra lanes in both directions between Plenty and Yan Yean roads
Other improvements include upgrades to key intersections and installation of safety barriers and shared walking and cycling paths to improve safety and connectivity
The upgrade is also building a new bridge over Plenty River
with the existing 157-year-old heritage bridge to be repurposed as a dedicated walking and cycling path
The upgrade will reduce congestion and improve travel times while boosting safety and connecting communities across Melbourne’s growing outer-northern suburbs
Major Road Projects Victoria and construction partner Laing O’Rourke are delivering the project
More information about the Bridge Inn Road Upgrade, including traffic changes, is available on the Bridge Inn Road Upgrade.
