To better understand what is means to be ‘a local’ our suburb profile seeks to understand the local stories Koora (past)
Boordawan (future) and respond to Ngalang Maya (our place)
This snapshot identifies the unique character of Doubleview’s neighbourhood and helps the City rethink how we deliver services with a local focus
Doubleview was named for its views of both the Indian Ocean and the Darling Ranges
but development was slow until returning World War Two soldiers were given homes in the area
including residential and community development
Doubleview acquired its name as the suburb offers two extensive views
the Indian Ocean to the west and the Darling Ranges and Perth to the east
One of the first landowners in Doubleview was John Daniel Manning
a dairy farmer who occupied land in 1895 but did not develop it
The northern section of Doubleview was first subdivided in 1910 by Perth real estate agent Charles Edgar Stoneman but land did not sell rapidly and
many investors were led to believe they were buying in the city centre

These are the top local priorities you've told us about what's important for Doubleview:
The City has created Locally-led Stirling to drive deeper connection at a local suburb level to listen and respond with a local focus
At the heart of this Locally-led approach is an understanding that local people know what they need and a vision for everyone to get involved in shaping what it means to be “a local”
We want to bring neighbours together, invest in local stories and inspire opportunities to work together. To find out more about Locally-led Stirling, visit Shaping our City. If you're looking for ways to get involved in your local area, please contact one of the City’s Local Engagement Officers by emailing getinvolved@stirling.wa.gov.au
Connor subdivided the southern portion of Doubleview
although once again blocks were slow to sell
and developers Dudley and Dwyer acquired the unsold lots in both parts of Doubleview in 1926
While they created the name for the area in an attempt to attract interest
development did not begin to accelerate until the government began providing returned soldiers homes in the northern section of Doubleview after World War Two
Single detached dwellings dominate Doubleview but there are some scattered unit and duplex developments
Much of the area contains post-war housing
a significant proportion of which was constructed by the government
and many of the original dwellings are of timber-frame construction
with more recent developments using brick and tile
Some parts of the southern section of Doubleview contain examples of 1960s and international-style housing
There are seven local open spaces and one community open space in Doubleview that offer both active and passive recreation
While Doubleview Primary School serves the educational needs of younger students in the area
Doubleview also offers spectacular views from Ewen Street and the water tower on Princess Street
which is visible from all parts of the surrounding region
Westfield Innaloo is the nearest major retail outlet, supplemented by older retail strips along Sackville Terrace and Scarborough Beach Road.

Sixty-odd years after the Doubleview Bowls Club was founded
the neighbourhood bowlo has undergone a dramatic transformation
But it’s not down to new turf or shiny new balls – the driving force behind the transformation is Jacob D’Vauz and Anisha Halik
D’Vauz’s CV includes stints at Rockpool, Madalena’s, Tiny’s and Uncle Joe’s
and his fine-dining DNA is evident in the food he and Halik dish out
and we definitely didn’t have anyone under the age of 30,” D’Vauz tells Broadsheet

It’s easy to see why this unassuming suburban bowls club has become a go-to for many locals
Dishes like oyster blade, slow-roasted for 12 hours until meltingly tender, are served either with a fish-sauce caramel glaze, mash and sizeable onion rings, or swimming in a satay sauce, which D’Vauz perfected in Bali while at Potato Head’s restaurant
Specials like scallop and prawn toast with curried mayo take their place on the chalkboard alongside bowlo staples like cheeseburgers
“We get proper beef mince from Balcatta butcher Troy’s Meats for the patties,” says D’Vauz

it’s their first time trying raw fish,” says D’Vauz
A constantly changing menu means the kitchen can work with the freshest
best-priced produce from D’Vauz’s market visits
“I’m able to have more fun in the kitchen and be more creative than I’ve been in any other job
while still offering people an experience at an affordable price,” he says
“That’s the most satisfying part of this.”
D’Vauz and Halik understand the importance of accessibility

Doubleview Gold Corp (TSX-V:DBG) reports long copper-gold-silver-cobalt intercepts from drilling during the 2024 campaign at its 100% owned Polymetallic Hat Porphyry Project
and H077 have expanded the mineralisation and potentially will increase the Hat Project’s resource in size and grade
The 2024 drilling program was designed to confirm the integrity of the resource estimate categories
particularly the indicated resource figures and potentially to allow elevating part or all to a measured resource.
Holes were directed to intersect shallow mineralisation and to further explore high-grade zones
Drilling has confirmed the continuity of mineralisation indicating that the deposit exhibits greater consistency than typically expected of a porphyry-style deposit
drillhole H075 has mineralisation from 45m depth to 341m
CEO Farshad Shirvani says the 2024 campaign was successful in testing
confirming and improving the resource model.
“We are encouraged to see the occurrence of mineralisation closer to the surface as well as strong mineralisation drill holes which proves continuity and allows for more detailed structural interpretations,” says Shirvani
“This will strongly reflect in the upcoming MRE.V 2.0 that will be part of Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) and add value to the Polymetallic Hat Deposit by increasing the metal content
We are continuously working on our exploration model as data becomes available to recognize details of the deposit and its critical and precious metals.”

Here’s our picks for great eating and drinking around the 6018/6019
and we’ve tried to organise the list a little more restaurant-y at the top
with more bar vibes down the bottom – enjoy
If it’s laid-back, old school Italian restaurant vibes great for family and friends you’re looking for, Al Fornetto must be the place
The amount of choice on offer in the menus is as big as the meals themselves
There’s an array of pizzas and pastas to pick your way through
alongside some Italian main classics like Pollo or Veal Parmigiana and arguably their hero dish
The kinda spot you’ll find yourself spending hours at with the right group of peeps
Just across the corner from Al Fornetto you’ll find a much newer kid on the block – Jalisco
Serving up some seriously good tacos and tequila
follow the red neon skull and you will find your Mexican heaven
but its their tacos that’ll have you coming back again and again
Perched on the beach with a view that’ll take your breath away, La Capannina is bringing the relaxed
We can’t think of much better than having a slice of pizza in one hand and a cocktail in another
Once the go-to party destination along the Scarborough beach strip, El Grotto has matured over the years into one of its most delicious eating joints

The Lookout ain’t just a huge bar on the beach in Scarbs
it’s also got some good time bowling alleys inside
Some may have laughed at the notion of converting the old Matisse Beach Club into a bar you can go bowling at
but it’s been a huge hit down on the Esplanade
With regular meal and bowling deals during the week
we recommend popping by then when it’s a bit more chill
although if you feel like turning it up it’s got the rowdiest Sunday sesh on the strip
Hellburger by name
As you can see in this list there is plenty of competition for excellent burger joints in the 6019

Combining local and imported D.O.P ingredients – including Stracciatella and Burrata from La Delizia Latticini – Il Locale’s three-day Caputo and Manitoba fermented dough is the perfect vessel to carry the very essence of quality toppings
An absolute mainstay on the strip for years, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better spot to watch a Scarborough sunset with beer in hand than Oceans 6019
There’s always DJs on hand to help soundtrack those sundown vibes
will you’ll also find some live music inside
and maybe even a sneaky bit of karaoke if you’re up to it
The Indi Bar has been holding down live music in Scarborough for years
They’ve had some of Australia’s biggest bands roll through along with always showcasing some of its future stars
Plus their pool parties go are the place to once that sun comes back out
and Toastface Grillah on the food is an absolute winner

Doubleview Gold Corp. [DBG-TSXV, DBLVF-OTCQB
A1W038-FSE] has announced significant high-grade copper and gold intercepts in drill results from its 100%-owned Hat polymetallic porphyry deposit in northwestern British Columbia
The company completed 10,000 metres of additional drilling in 2024
part of an effort to demonstrate Hat’s potential to be an important source of precious and critical minerals in Canada
Results from drill holes H078 and H079 include the most substantial intervals of high-grade copper and gold mineralization encountered at the Hat Project to date
The company said recent drilling focused on the Central Lisle Zone
which was discovered in 2024 and is interpreted as a potential porphyry feeder zone
The Lisle Zone is an alkalic-type-gold-copper porphyry discovery closely similar in genesis
alteration and mineralization to several important British Columbia mines
“The intercepts demonstrate shallow mineralization horizons and provide further evidence of the Hat Deposit’s robust mineralization profile,’’ the company said in a February 25
Drilling highlights include drill hole H078
which returned 672 metres of average grad 0.29% copper
and 0.22 g/t gold (0.50% copper equivalent CuEq) from 12 metres to 684 metres
Significant long intersections include 409 metres [from 92 metres to 501 metres] averaging 0.39% copper and 0.28 g/t gold [0.65% CuEq]
including 104 metres [from 247 metres to 354 metres] averaging 1.00% copper and 0.46 g/t gold [1.42% CuEq]
the highest-grade interval recorded at the Hat Project
Hole H079 returned 0.95% copper and 0.79 g/t gold over 82 metres within 213 metres of 0.59% copper and 0.50 g/t gold
Other drill holes reported in the latest press release are extending the mineralization envelope of the Hat Deposit
H082 and H083 also provide more details of the East Lisle Zone
a shallow extension of the Main Lisle Zone
The shares trade in a 52-week range of 60 cents and 29 cents
“These are the most significant drill results we have ever reported from the Hat Project that is attracting attention from major players in the metals industry,’’ said Doubleview President and CEO Farshad Shirvani
“These results not only underscore the robust nature of the Hat Deposit but also enhance its potential to become a world class polymetallic resource,’’ he said
“We are excited about the conclusions and these findings and look forward to advancing the project with further drilling and exploration activities.’’
The Hat polymetallic porphyry deposit is one of a small number of North American deposits that contains significant amounts of scandium
a rare metal that is deemed critical for economic and national security by the Canadian and American federal governments
The latest drill intercepts display consistent copper
as well as consistent scandium mineralization
reinforcing the Hat Deposit’s potential as a significant resource of strategic metals
the company announced a maiden open pit resource estimate (MRE) for the Hat project
It was highlighted by an indicated resource of 150 million tonnes of containing 1.35 billion pounds of copper equivalent (CuEq) at 0.408% CuEq
929,000 ounces of gold and 2.0 million ounces of silver
On top of that is an inferred resource of 477 million tonnes containing 3.62 billion pounds of CuEq at 0.344% CuEq
2.3 million ounces of gold and 7.57 million ounces of silver
According to the MRE
the Scandium potential for the Hat Deposit is estimated to be 300 to 500 million tonnes at an average grade of 40 ppm (0.004%) Sc203
material that is confined solely to the resource blocks that meet a cut-off grade of 0.2% CuEq within the open pit shell that defines the extent of the mineral resource estimate
The company has said the 2024 drilling program was designed to confirm the integrity of the resource estimate categories
particularly the indicated resource figures and potentially to allow elevating part or all to a measured resource
Drill holes have been directed to intersect shallow mineralization and to further explore high grade zones
Doubleview has also said drilling has confirmed the continuity of mineralization indicating that the deposit exhibits greater consistency than is typically expected of a porphyry-style deposit
It is expected that the latest drilling results will be strongly reflected in the upcoming mineral resource estimate (MRE version 2.0) that will be part of the preliminary economic assessment (PEA) and add value to the Hat Deposit by increasing the metal content
“We are continuously working on our exploration model as data becomes available to recognize details of the deposit and its critical and precious metals,’’ the company said
the East Lisle Zone has revealed a promising new zone of mineralization beyond the conceptual pit shell proposed in the maiden mineral resource estimate and at depth
which is expected to be extended in the upcoming resource estimate (MRE V 2.0) with the new conceptual pit walls
Significant drill intercepts from the East Lisle Zone include H081
which returned 315 metres of 0.32% CuEq from 39 metres to 354 metres
The results from the East Lisle Zone indicate potential extensions of the Hat Deposit to the east
The drill intercepts show consistent grades over substantial lengths
underscoring the prospectivity of this area and supporting further exploration
the company said the Far Northwest Lisle Zone has produced encouraging results
“These results suggest significant potential for mineralization in this area
further extending the scope of the Hat Polymetallic Deposit.’’ Intercepts from the Far Northwest Lisle Zone include hole H086
which returned 73 metres of 0.34% CuEq (0.20% copper

The City of Stirling has partnered with Western Power to work together towards converting overhead distribution powerlines to underground power
while improving street appearance and opportunities for increased uptake of solar and other technologies
Underground power offers improved reliability and safety
street appeal and allowing the tree canopy to flourish
The underground power project will be carried out in stages
residents within the project boundary will receive a notification outlining what will be done and how it may impact you
The process of transforming a suburb to underground power means that some things are going down - poles and lines - whilst some new things are going up - primary equipment sites or those large boxes on the side of the road or back of a park
A community forum for the whole suburb called 'Watts Up Is Going Down' will help answer people's questions about who is doing what and when
The cost of undergrounding power is shared between the State Government
with payment facilitated through the City of Stirling
The City will be responsible for invoicing residents for the installation costs
This cost and partnership model addresses the need to renew ageing electricity infrastructure
while acknowledging the shared benefits of this project
To find out if your suburb is listed for underground power, please visit Western Power
Please note that Western Power determines the order of these projects based on the age of the assets in that area and therefore the need to underground them
Note: This is the latest information provided by Western Power and will be updated on a regular basis as new information becomes available (last updated April 2024)
Western Power’s contractor will be doing a letter drop to all properties located in the Joondanna area that are in the project boundary for the North Perth/Mount Hawthorn (TUPP) Underground Power Project
The letter is to acknowledge that the works are to begin in the area and provide key details as to the work being conducted and contact details. Please click here to see a copy of the letter that will be received at the property address.
please contact Western Power’s contractor on the provided contact details
The cost of undergrounding power is split between Western Power and the ratepayer
A service charge is the amount to be charged to properties in the project area and reflects the share of the project cost
Network charge – this is determined by property type (residential or non-residential) and the associated demand for network capacity as allocated by Western Power
Connection charge – the figure varies dependent upon several factors:
Property owners can expect to receive their service charge in the 2025/26 financial year
The City will be in contact with property owners to confirm the service charge amount prior to 1 July 2025
Western Power targets areas where the overhead network is due, or will soon be due, for replacement. Once Western Power has identified a project area, it approaches the relevant local government with an offer to convert that area to underground power
Western Power makes offers to local governments in priority order
The cost for different suburbs and projects will vary depending on the unique site conditions
and the number of properties within the nominated precinct
Western Power conduct an open tender process for each project and select the best contractor based on their selection model. The City has no involvement in this process. If you wish to discuss this matter further, please contact Western Power, please click here to be taken to their Underground Power website
the costs of the program are shared between Western Power
Local Government and the State Government with total costs determined by Western Power
The State Government’s contribution is tiered based on socio-economic factors
The City has adopted a ‘user pays’ model to recoup its contribution from properties directly benefitting
Residents are required to pay a proportion of the network cost
regardless of whether the resident’s service connection is undergrounded or not
Residents without an underground connection will also need to pay a connection cost
The City has used a dollar per kilo-volt-ampere (KVA) allocation methodology for the financial model to determine the Network Charge to Property Owners
The network has been designed to meet the expected energy requirements for the area and this is achieved by allocating a KVA to each property type
The total KVA’s are added up together and then divided by the total project network cost to get a dollar per KVA
The dollar per KVA is then multiplied against an assigned expected KVA for that property which results in the total network fee for that property
A connection charge is then calculated based on the connection type for each property and then added to the network charge to arrive at the full project cost required to be paid by the property owner
SUPP projects are based on a user-pays principle
where those benefitting are those required to pay a contribution
The benefits of the program are received by the State Government agencies (through upgrade of their infrastructure) and the ratepayers (through improved reliability
efficiency of services and improved property values)
Local governments are not the asset owners
and therefore do not contribute to the cost of the project (outside of contributions required for City-owned properties)
Funding such activities out of operational budgets would place upward pressure on rates paid by all property owners in The City
Western Power is contributing 88% of the network cost
Ratepayers are required to contribute the remaining 12%
This equates to a network charge of $2,078 per residential property
Businesses are charged a variable network charge based on the demand they place on the network
Pensioners and seniors who have the following concession cards may be eligible for underground power rebates under the Rates and Charges (Rebates and Deferments) Act 1992:
Holders of the above cards (except those who only have a WA Seniors Card) may also be eligible to defer paying their underground power charge
This means the charge remains as a debt on the property until the property is sold
You can also access the Apply for a pensioners or seniors rebate web page or the Pensioners and Seniors Concessions Scheme fact sheet for more information.
Please see below Doubleview Project Zones which includes estimated start and completion dates.
Yes. Most of the cost of undergrounding power is laying new underground cables in the street and installing new street lighting. Those properties which have an existing pole to pillar connection e.g. an underground cable within their property from an overhead street network via green dome either within their own property or an adjoining property, will be required to contribute towards the overall cost of the project in the form of network cost.
Any property, where a person resides who is registered as having a medical condition which necessitates constant power supply, will be given special consideration when the changeover is programmed. The affected resident, or their carer, needs to contact Western Power or the contractor so that arrangements can be made to carry out the changeover without risk to the affected person’s health or welfare.

a good local bowlo is worth its weight in lawn bowls
And the criteria for what makes a great bowls club is pretty simple:
Are the greens in good nick? Are the pints cheap? Are there friendly faces at the bar up for a yarn
Below you’ll find a bunch of places that always have these ticked off
along with a few other added bonuses along the way
Meat raffles, chase the ace, sport on the tele, purple ATM… Doubleview Bowling Club has it all, including a well-stocked bar slinging out great drinks at bowls club prices. Wednesday and Friday nights have some incredible food courtesy of Special Delivery
it’s cheap as chips to become a social member
and there’s free barefoot bowls on Sunday arvos too
One of Perth’s oldest bowlos (it’s celebrating its 90th birthday in 2025), Bassendean Bowling Club is a haven for locals
offering darts and pool on top of the action on the greens
It’s got a very pleasant outdoor area AKA The Den
a bunch of big screens to watch the footy on and plenty of smiling faces on either side of the bar
After a few years spent in the wilderness (see also: renovations), the North Freo Bowlo bounced back bigger and better than ever late in 2024
It’s open on Fridays from 4-10pm and Sunday arvos from 2-8pm
but they’ve got plenty going on during those times
and fun for the family in a very community-minded space
They’re on the hunt for new sponsors to keep the good times rolling too
so hit ’em up if you’re a local business who loves a bowlo as much as we do
Osborne Park is big on family and community vibes
offering excellently-priced food and drink all throughout the week
They also don’t mind a spot of barefoot bowling
One of Perth’s oldest and friendliest bowls clubs, Como Bowling & Recreation Club has plenty going on during the week for peeps young and old
Friday nights is when the action is though
chase the ace and barefoot bowls for just $10pp from 6-8pm
get down between 5-6pm for even cheaper drinks during happy hour
They’ve got a bit of everything at Inglewood
The bar is about as old school Aussie bowls club as it gets
For some top shelf inner city bowling action the 125 year old (!) Perth & Tatts in East Perth is the place to be
They also host some high intensity darts competitions on the weekends
and have some pool tables to knock a few balls around if you’re feeling so inclined
As far as letting the (big) kids run wild, the Baysie is the place to be
They’ve got regular food truck takeovers and local brewery tap takeovers are always pouring
A proud club that’s managed to find the perfect balance between the social and sporting side of things
Almost Perth’s most scenic bowls club, the lush surrounds of the Mount Lawley Bowling Club are steeped in history and the art deco designs make for a pretty great function space as well
Another spot that’s rather popular amongst the Mount Lawley young folk
it gets pretty busy on the weekends but always a good time
Cnr Storthes & Rookwood Street Mount Lawley
Yes we’re sorry Mount Lawley, but it’s hard to argue with the “club with a million dollar view” on Bayview Terrace in Mosman Park
they’ve always got something going on including kitchen takeovers
A beacon of good vibes and community, the South Perth Bowling Club is right in the thick of it just next door to the Perth Zoo
so in good nick all year-round and there’s plenty of lighting making for some excellent night time bowling

A1W038-FSE] is a company that offers unique exposure to precious and critical minerals including
the key ingredients in the transition to a low carbon economy
The company’s 100%-owned Hat polymetallic porphyry deposit is one of a small number of North American deposits that contains significant amounts of scandium
and we have them,’’ said Doubleview President and CEO Farshad Shirvani during a recent interview with Resource World
It is why the value of Doubleview shares surged 24% when the company recently announced a maiden resource estimate (MRE) for the Hat project
Highlights include an indicated resource of 150 million tonnes (at a 0.2% CuEq cut-off grade) containing 1.35 billion pounds of copper equivalent (CuEq) at 0.408% CuEq
On top of that is an inferred resource of 477 million tonnes (at a 0.2% CuEq cut-off grade) containing 3.62 billion pounds of CuEq at 0.344% CuEq
The Scandium potential for the Hat Deposit is estimated to be 300 to 500 million tonnes at an average grade of 40 ppm (0.004%) Sc203
by jumping from 33 cents to a high of 45 cents
the shares had slipped back to 40.5 cents leaving the company with a market cap of $77.4 million based on 191.2 million shares outstanding
The shares are currently trading in a 52-week range of 68 cents and 31 cents
Believing that Hat can become an important source of critical minerals
Doubleview has said it aims to develop a district-scale polymetallic deposit
in a move that will benefit key stakeholders
a geologist with more than 27 years of mineral exploration experience in Canada
He is currently the President of Terracad Geoscience Services Ltd
Prior to taking Doubleview public on the TSX Venture Exchange
Shirvani served as a director of several junior mining companies
The Hat project is located in B.C.’s Golden Triangle
a region that is known for its rich and diverse geology
one that has the potential to host several types of the world’s most profitable deposits
including high-grade gold and silver veins
large scale porphyries and volcanogenic massive sulphides
Hat covers 5
200 hectares and is located 95 kilometres southwest of Dease Lake and 190 kilometres south of Atlin
It is also located 10 kilometres north of the Golden Bear mine road
Current access is via fixed-wing aircraft or helicopter from Dease Lake or Whitehorse
The recently completed Northwest Transmission Line brings electric power to within 120 kilometres
Doubleview discovered the Hat deposit in early 2014 from a greenfield prospect in the first drilling season
Following the drilling of six holes with marginal but encouraging success
a more aggressive drilling campaign in 2014 resulted in the discovery of the Lisle Zone of gold-copper mineralization
the company said it completed almost 11,000 metres of drilling during the 2023 exploration season
work that explored and extended the Lisle deposit to the west
enabling a new interpretation of the deposit orientation and model
and revealing a new gold-silver-cobalt-rich area
It said several previously unconnected mineral zones were joined and over-all dimensions were increased
news release included a 4.0-metre section of hole H067 which returned a remarkable 6.94% copper and 8.29 g/t gold (11.27% copper equivalent calculated
“The discovery of a deposit with potential deliverables of scandium
copper and gold by Doubleview is a significant achievement for the company
its shareholders and North America as a whole,’’ Shirvani has said
“Of particular significance is the potential for scandium
as the USA imports 100% of scandium needed,’’ he said
Scandium is utilized in various industries due to its unique properties
Applications take advantage of scandium’s ability to enhance the strength
making the resultant alloy ideal for aerospace
scandium finds applications in the manufacturing of solid oxide fuel cells
where it serves as a critical component due to its electrical conductivity and heat resistance
These fuel cells are used in power generation with high efficiency and low emissions
“This landmark discovery [at the Hat project] has the potential to expand the use of scandium in a variety of applications
one of which is the ability to enhance the energy capacity
stability and safety of nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries commonly used in electric vehicles and consumer electronics,’’ Shirvani said
Doubleview said tests have shown that scandium can be extracted from tailings using sulphuric acid at elevated temperatures as a lixiviant
Tests also show that scandium can be separated into an intermediate scandium – aluminum product that can be processed further for the recovery of a scandium oxide product
Separation of scandium and aluminum is the focus of the next phase of test work
as per the Company’s news release in late July
3,460 metres of drilling was completed already
The company said the main objectives of the 2024 drilling program are to improve grade and further explore mineralization trends identified by statistical and geological models
Another objective is to conduct infill drilling in areas where drill holes are sparce or overly widespread and better define he deposit’s envelope
Drill crews will also target areas of shallower mineralization to improve grade and tonnage prior to a future “Version 2” mineral resource estimate
“Several opportunities to improve the maiden resource were identified which we want to realize promptly during this year’s field season
including very targeted drilling,’’ Shirvani said
the size of the deposit has increased by very targeted drilling
bringing it to a footprint of about 1.5 kilometres by 1.38 kilometres,” he said

the queue for the bistro at the Doubleview Bowling Club often starts forming before the kitchen opens at 5.30pm
getting in line early is a matter of convenience
Maybe they’re on the way home from the office or school pick-up
Or maybe the bowlo is exactly where they’re supposed to be because they’ve got a must-win four-a-side community bowls game that evening and need to be ready to roll at 7pm
this early mealtime is simply good old-fashioned FOMO
It pays to get in early for dinner at Doubleview Bowling Club.Tori LillAs your correspondent can attest to
Wednesday and Friday night late-comers to this community hub in hilly Doubleview run the risk of missing out on that day’s chalkboard specials
Perhaps there’ll be two lines of pink chalk through the char siu chicken Maryland served with rice and Asian greens ($25): a meal a pal texted me about and described as “would not have looked out of place at any top restaurant”
you’ll be in line as the final serve of thick-sliced roast oyster blade and garlic prawns ($25) gets picked up by its lucky owner; have just enough time to wonder what could have been; then watch helplessly as it disappears into the jumble of tables that populate the club’s sprawling hall
In your head, you hear the immortal (paraphrased) words of the Seinfeld universe’s most famous chef: no reef and beef for you
bowlo kitchens running out of food isn’t something to write home about
is the breadth of flavours and influences in play at the Doubleview Bowling Club
one could reasonably expect to find roast chook ($25)
roast beef and other classic Australiana on offer
These aren’t the bowlo meals our grandparents ate
they didn’t have Anisha Halik and Jacob D’Vauz cooking them dinner either
Uncle Joe’s Mess Hall or one of the many places he’s cooked at over the past 15 years
you’ll know that old mate isn’t shy when it comes to dishing out flavour in his cooking
But even if you weren’t aware of the D’Vauz origin story
one forkful of our man’s pappardelle ragu ($25; craggy noodles in a deep ragu of beef short rib) lets you know that D’Vauz feels completely at home in a kitchen
but its vego counterpart with grilled eggplant ($20) glazed with maltose
fermented soy and honey afforded me a similar contact high
While the five-dish menu changes weekly, the double cheeseburger ($20) is one of two permanent items and understandably so: it’s a banger. The patties are made with mince from cult Balcatta butcher Troy’s Meats
Ever wondered what would happen if Macca’s and HJs teamed up Marvel-Capcom style and combined the cheeseburger and Whopper
The burger also comes with some of the greatest traditional chips I’ve eaten in Perth

frying chips isn’t rocket science: you get a good product
then wait for the oil (changed regularly) to come to temperature before cooking
there’s a difference between someone that knows how to do something
and someone that has the discipline to sweat all the details
The fish and chips ($23) is the other menu mainstay and also Halik’s domain
also great and the giant plinths of fried fish (usually barramundi) are juicy
golden and crunchy everywhere they ought to be

“How do you make a small fortune in hospitality? Start with a big fortune.”
So goes the classic gallows humour of those in the food game.
Right now, it feels like that game is extra challenging, with reduced spending and staff shortages two comments I’m hearing regularly from operators. But despite the current climate, venues continue to open.
While everyone is entitled to roll the dice and chase dreams, I just wonder if now’s the time to open something. Or at least something that follows the traditional path of dropping six figures on building, fit-out, staff, marketing et al and opening the doors saddled with crazy debt.
(“Pop-ups built Hoodburger,” says co-founder Matt Shaw
“I don’t think anyone expected the bowls club to get as big as it did.“)
“If I could buy or lease a big bowling club
I’d ditch my warehouse and go back to one in a heartbeat.”
bowls clubs gave operators a chance to test proof-of-concept before taking the plunge and opening permanent places

Doubleview Gold ( (TSE:DBG) ) is experiencing volatility
We like to bang on about how great (or rather
OK!) Perth is – but our greatness doesn’t just happen out of nowhere
We’re partnering up with Town Team Movement so we can shine a light on some of the people who help make our communities so unique
and just a few of the excellent initiatives they’re working on
This week, we’re featuring Joslin Colli, one of the brains behind The Bend
When new suburbs were established in Ellenbrook 15 years ago
Joslin recalls that a post box and a local deli were essential for communities to connect
she offers a great perspective on the underlying reality of crafting a local network within a suburb
Optimistic and determined to improve her locality
Joslin has years of experience working in local government – including handling the bureaucracy involved in creating community events
Joslin devotes a portion of her time to The Bend; an active Town Team in Doubleview that owes its name to the last curve towards the ocean on Scarborough Beach Road
One of the events organised by The Bend was a successful soirée that was established a few years ago
welcoming about 500 residents at a local venue
Whilst benefiting from the support of their local government
as well as other non-for-profit organisations faces challenges – like a high volume of paperwork and administrative duties that can overwhelm committee members
leading to disengagement due to higher priorities in their personal lives
Joslin strongly believes that active participation can be more powerful and of greater value than donation
with groups like Town Teams enabling and encouraging positive change within a place
Town Team is a place for anyone willing to be active
create and develop their personal and collaborative skills
As well as their communal projects creating profound and rewarding sense of connectedness
the willingness of a neighbourhood to come together and drive improvement in shared places will dictate their collective success and prosperity

Doubleview Gold (TSX-V:DBG) continues to extend the ‘gold rich zone’ within the South Lisle Zone following analyses from 3 Hat property drillholes
The Hat porphyry project is located in the Stikine mining district of northwestern British Columbia

A Doubleview father who set his three-year-old daughter alight and doused her seven- year-old autistic sister with petrol while in a drug-induced psychosis has been sentenced to 17 years behind bars
Edward John Herbert admitted intending to murder the girls at the family's Doubleview home in August 2015
a defence that WA Supreme Court Justice Lindy Jenkins rejected in April after his judge-alone trial
Edward John Herbert has been jailed for 17 years after setting fire to his children in Doubleview.Credit: Facebook
Herbert had been drinking almost a carton of beer and smoking $50 worth of cannabis a day in the weeks leading up to the attack
in which he inflicted life-threatening burns to 13 per cent of his youngest daughter's body and left her permanently scarred
the 45-year-old shouted that aliens were coming to get him and said: "The werewolf is coming at 12 o'clock."
telling his now ex-partner he was going to kill her as she fled the house in fear
Off-duty policewoman Stephanie Bochorsky heard a commotion from her nearby home and ran into the house
She fought back tears as she told the trial she saw the three-year-old standing up in her cot with "her whole head on fire" and put out the flames using a blanket
She then saw Herbert pouring petrol over the autistic girl as she lay in her bed and dragged the child out of the house while holding her burnt sister
The trial heard a different neighbour rushed in with a fire extinguisher and found Herbert naked
He told the neighbour he burnt his daughter because she was "too f***ing beautiful"
then lunged at the man with a knife but was hit on the head with the fire extinguisher
When another neighbour rescued Herbert's six-year-old son
the offender told her: "Don't worry
Prosecutor Amanda Forrester said the boy had to be physically removed from his bed as he was frozen with fear from what he had heard
And if the policewoman hadn't intervened
it was highly likely Herbert would have set his older daughter alight
the younger girl had suffered damaged vocal chords and hearing and would continue to feel pain from her burns
Justice Jenkins commended the neighbours for acting quickly and courageously
saying Constable Bochorsky saved the girls' lives
who no longer suffers from psychosis or bi-polar disorder
has been banned from contact with his daughters and ex-partner under lifetime restraining orders
while an order applying to his son will expire two years after his release from jail
Defence counsel Mara Barone said her client had told his psychiatrist he felt profound shame and guilt and was in "hell" knowing what he'd done to his daughter
Justice Jenkins told Herbert his ex-partner had said he'd "broken her heart into many pieces"

were devastated when the beloved Doubleview cafe closed in mid-2021: so much so that they decided to take over the space and ensure the local community had a communal living room to call its own
The result of the Fletchers’ graft is Folk & Merchant
a cosy cafe that opened on Sunday with a morning of free coffee
Based on the steady trickle of customers drifting in and out of the space during opening week
it seems that locals are happy to see the space back in action
“We wanted to open our doors as soon as we could and then work out what the space needs and what the community wants,” says Laura
“We want to talk to customers and understand what they want us to be.”
While the Fletchers are keen to listen to customers
one point they’re adamant about is their support for local businesses
is baked by Doubleview home bakery Bread Bros; the relishes and jams are from Oohlala Preserves
and the kombucha is from Scarborough’s Hippie Kombucha
Wangara-based Kaltiva Coffee Roasters are responsible for the cafe’s custom blend while the roasters husband-and-wife owners Teia Karauria and Lloyd Rainsford can also be found working the coffee machine
The food menu keeps things simple with toast
open sandwiches and croissants and baked goods on offer
Folk & Merchant is predominantly outdoor seating with a coffee window servicing the takeaway crowd
the Fletchers have expanded the cafe into the former fitness studio and added additional indoor seating and a retail space
As well as clothes from Laura’s own children’s label Lucie June (prior to becoming a cafe owner
Laura worked as a fashion buyer and interior designer)
Wooden benches and stools handmade in Bali dot the room
One of the key features of Folk & Merchant’s next phase will be transforming a car park space into an outdoor community area that will include a children’s nature play area

A teenager died almost instantly after being stabbed in the neck outside a house party in Perth's northern suburbs
was drinking with friends when he got into a scuffle with Abraham Keung Cross
a 36-year-old who had been loitering out the front of the Doubleview house with another man
was found dead outside a party in Doubleview in October 2013
The West Australian Supreme Court heard on Tuesday that fellow partygoers saw Cross lunge at Mr Pinner's neck with a small knife that up until then had been concealed
Mr Pinner's throat was slashed and he bled to death in the street within moments
Defence lawyer Anthony Eyers said in his opening statement that Cross had been skateboarding earlier in the day and was catching up with friend Shaun Peter Donaldson while he waited for his girlfriend to pick him up
Mr Eyers said the pair had exchanged "good natured words" with partygoers but the mutual exchanges wore thin and the heavily tattooed men were mobbed by a group of up to 10 much larger and drunker teens
Prosecutor James MacTaggart said Cross had no reason to be hanging around a party for young people when he could have waited at the house of Mr Donaldson's mother just around the corner
Mr MacTaggart said Cross berated a drunken teen who was being assisted by friends in the front yard
and had said derogatory things to girls at the party
He said Cross intended to cause the intoxicated Mr Pinner serious harm and had denied he had been mobbed by the group
"He was in no danger whatsoever," Mr MacTaggart said
The prosecution said Mr Donaldson had retrieved a machete he had brandished at the teens but had nothing to do with the fatal stabbing
and was not standing near Mr Pinner when he died
Mr MacTaggart said when Mr Pinner's friends tried to apprehend the pair
